24 May 2022 | What is Positive Leadership? | 00:09:06
What is positive leadership? In this episode, I’m exploring what positive leadership entails, positive psychology, how they connect to focus on your team’s strengths and why you should look at using this leadership method in your workplace every day. There’s a very common myth that leaders are born - you either have ‘it’ or you don’t. But leaders are not born - they’re trained. I’ve seen people becoming leaders across all types of businesses because they’re good at their job but aren’t given the leadership tools they need to thrive. There’s a better way. Positive leadership creates leaders who are clear on the goals, have good relationships with their team and inspire them to grow. I’ll explore how this method of leadership leads to less stress, better health, better working relationships and more effectiveness in their role. I’ll run you through positive psychology to give you the foundation in positive leadership so you can thoroughly understand how this method came into practice and how you can apply it to motivate your team. I encourage you to reflect on your own leadership strategy and start looking at where you can implement positive leadership to build a team that is inspired, loves coming to work and feels fulfilled in their roles every day. 24 May 2022 | Strengths of your Team | 00:05:22
As a leader, your strengths and weaknesses will dictate your leadership style. Understanding the strengths of your team members will ensure they feel valued and fulfilled in the roles they are given.
This is a very important part of being a leader.
In this episode, I’m discussing the strengths of your team and knowing your role. Ideally, you’ll have ⅔ of your role in your sweet spot and use your strengths, and ⅓ will be the tasks that you have to do as a leader (that you may not love).
Identifying and championing strengths is a very central topic within positive psychology. As a volunteer life saver, we have a meeting before each shift where we identify everybody’s role by examining their strengths. This way, we’re making sure that every task is covered by the best possible person so, in an emergency, everybody knows what to do.
I’ll explore the science behind strengths, the fulfilment we attain by using our strengths, and how to identify the strengths in your team and in yourself as a leader.
Check out my free mini-course here for 5 questions to ask yourself before hiring your first (or next) team member. We’ll look at your business model, leadership style and how to decide what you can delegate before you hire.

24 May 2022 | What Plants can Teach us about Leadership | 00:04:19
In nature, all organisms are drawn to sources of health and energy so you’ll find that plants will always grow towards the light.
Humans are no different. We all know that person that feels like sunlight and others are simply drawn to them. Leaders who incorporate positive leadership embody this natural effect and people will naturally want to follow them.
In this episode, I’m discussing what plants can teach us about leadership. Don’t worry, whether you’re a house plant person or not, this episode will resonate with you.
Let’s start by reflecting on how you can move closer to the light and taking a look at what is getting in the way. I’ll help you by exploring how you can put this into action in your life so you can find the energy, feel the warmth and connect with others in your leadership journey.

26 May 2022 | Leadership is Lonely | 00:09:14
In today's episode, I'm going to share with you the number one thing people talk to me about in their one-on-one coaching. This is leaders, this is small business owners this is people that are CEOs of big businesses. When you get to this point of leadership, when you were in charge of your business and people - It's lonely. Leadership is lonely. When you're responsible for people and business you lose that feeling of having peers it's people that you can talk to. That help you realize that you're not alone and remind you that what you're going through is normal. I find that people are so caught up in their business and how things are working, they forget that human connection part, because it's no longer okay to just have a conversation with someone and share what's going on. Because they could be relying on you for the security of their job or the psychological safety or when your boss tells you what's going on, you might not feel so comfortable. So how do you overcome that as a leader of a business? 30 May 2022 | Who should I hire? | 00:06:25

06 Jun 2022 | A big hiring mistake you should avoid | 00:05:00
In today's episode, we're talking about something that leaders tell me they do when they interview a potential candidate. And let me tell you, it seems like a great idea. But in this episode, you'll be understanding why this approach is not a great approach to have in your interviews. A lot of leaders have said to me that during an interview with a potential candidate, they like to put their candidate under pressure to see if they crack. On the surface this seems like a good idea. If the candidate can keep their cool while you poke at them, then, you know you're likely to have someone who can handle pressure all around, but it doesn't work in practice. And do you know the reason why? Psychological safety.

13 Jun 2022 | Leadership Ladder - making the leap from specialist to leader | 00:08:02
What can we learn from dating that applies to leadership? The friendship ladder and the relationship ladder are two different things. You can’t move up the relationship ladder and expect the top rung to be a relationship. It’s a completely different ladder, and you need to jump from the friendship ladder to the relationship ladder (at the risk of falling into the nothingness in between!) Being technically great at your job is like being on the friendship ladder. The further you progress, we can sometimes think the top rungs are leadership positions. In fact, it’s not the case. Leadership is a whole different ladder! Have you (or can you) make the leap from the specialist ladder to the leadership ladder?

04 Jul 2022 | Are Leaders Born or Made? | 00:11:14
One of the most common questions I get about leadership is this: Are leaders born, or made? It is the common "nature versus nurture" question, which we will be going through in today's podcast. So in any good debate, you need to hear both sides. Side One: leaders are born, Side Two leaders are made. We’ll look at data from sport (do big feet mean you’ll be a good swimmer?), twin studies (if leaders are born, are identical twins with 100% of the same genes both good leaders/bad leaders?) are extroverts good leaders (and introverts a weak second), and data business psychology (what percentage can be learnt?). It’s a data rich episode, but as always, I finish with a tip for you to level up your leadership 1%, starting today. Links

19 Jul 2022 | Work Friendships - the good, the bad and the ugly | 00:08:09
Have you ever asked a child “Did you make any friends at school today?” The reason we ask this question of children nervously is because we know that school without friends can be a lonely and hostile place. With friends and the other hand, it can be really good fun. And so you can work. But what are some of the common pitfalls that we can come across with friendships at work? Are work friendships a good idea, or a terrible idea? With International Day of Friendship coming up on the 30th of July, today's topic is about friendships at work. We're going to be talking about: can you make friends at work? Is there benefits to having friends at work? Can you be friends with your boss? How do you make boundaries with your work friends? And last of all, if you wanting more work friends, how do you actually do that? So let's get stuck into today's episode about work friendships, the good, the bad, and the ugly. Links

01 Aug 2022 | Is Leadership Chess or Checkers? | 00:10:55
In the movie Training Day, Denzel Washington plays a rogue detective character and he tells his new protege, in effect "this is chess, not checkers". He means the job is way more complicated than it seems. It's fast, dynamic and with lots of moving parts. This is a similar analogy for leadership. So how does thinking about chess help you as a leader? Wise leaders that think in the idea of chess, they manage relationships and connect with individuals based on their unique personality and strengths. In the book, they observed then interviewed more than 60 leaders who are trying to convince business associates and other people to change their minds on a course of action they initially disagreed with. The leaders who were the most successful in overcoming other people's skepticisms had one thing in common. And this is the key to how to change someone's mind…. Links

16 Jan 2023 | Signs of a Micromanager (is it you?) | 00:12:20
Micromanaging is a task that many new emerging leaders and even seasoned leaders are guilty of committing. Officially it's the management style where a leader, excessively supervisors their employees. Maybe you think you’re just actively managing your team (but the team are rolling their eyes because they feel completely micromanaged). How do you know if you’re micromanaging? In this episode, you’ll hear my own experiences as a A1 micromanager (embarrassing but true), solid examples of what micromanaging is, and what you can apply today to be a more constructive leader. 24 Jul 2023 | The Feedback Formula | 00:02:59
I absolutely love travelling and have been fortunate enough to visit 38 countries and counting. Currently, I'm on an exciting adventure, but this time, there's a twist – I'm travelling with my five-month-old baby, Alba. It's a whole new experience that both excites and makes me nervous. I want her to grow up exploring the world, just like me, with a passion for continuous learning. Interestingly, being a leader and giving feedback share the same mix of scary-meets-exciting feelings. Like a nervous flyer going through airport security, the idea of giving feedback can be intimidating. You want to learn and help others grow, but the fear of the unknown can hold you back. Yet, I firmly believe that practice makes progress. That's why I'm inviting you to join my upcoming free masterclass on "how to give feedback that doesn't suck." It's scheduled for either August 21st or 22nd, depending on your time zone. By the end of the session, you'll be equipped with the Feedback Formula and ready to have those conversations you've been longing for. You'll even witness a live feedback exchange. Interested? You can find more details and secure your seat through the link in the show notes. Remember, giving feedback may seem scary, but it doesn't have to be. 31 Jul 2023 | Lessons from my stroke | 00:04:55
Five years have passed since my Vertebral Artery Dissection and Minor Stroke, marking a significant milestone in my journey. While lying in the hospital bed, I set an audacious goal for myself—to complete another half-ironman triathlon in just six months. However, the reality of my condition quickly set in. Simple tasks like walking down a corridor or making a sandwich became monumental challenges. My usual activities, such as coaching CEOs, cycling, facilitating workshops, and playing the piano, were suddenly out of reach. It was a tough pill to swallow, and the disappointment in not achieving my unrealistic goal was real. This journey of healing post-stroke turned into a personal crash course on the power of feedback. Positive and constructive feedback can be incredibly motivating and build confidence even in the face of daunting challenges. On the other hand, poorly delivered feedback can tear a person down and erode their spirit. As a leader, I've realized that the words I use hold immense power; they can either build people up or leave them feeling diminished. Given the importance of effective communication, I want to help others learn the art of giving feedback that truly makes a difference. That's why I'm thrilled to invite you to a free masterclass titled "How to Give Feedback That Doesn't Suck." This interactive session, which will be held virtually for 60 minutes on August 21st or 22nd (depending on your time zone), is designed to equip you with the Feedback Formula—an essential tool for transforming feedback conversations into opportunities for growth and success. In the masterclass, we will not only delve into the theory of feedback but also put it into practice. Together, we'll workshop your feedback conversations, giving you hands-on experience and personal breakthroughs. My goal is to ensure you leave the session with tangible strategies you can apply immediately. As a special highlight, one lucky participant will have the opportunity to be coached by me in the hot seat segment. Witnessing this transformative feedback conversation will provide invaluable insights, helping you further refine your own feedback approach. So, let's take this step together on the journey of giving feedback that truly makes a difference. I promise to guide you through these conversations in a way that doesn't feel awkward or uncomfortable. Reserve your seat below. 07 Aug 2023 | Losing my mars bars in Patagonia | 00:03:44
I'm whisking you away (mentally!) to the awe-inspiring landscapes of Patagonia. Picture this: snow-capped peaks, icy blue lakes, and winds fierce enough to unseat a politician's toupee. Back in November 2019, I embarked on a thrilling hiking expedition through this wild wonderland. But Patagonia became more than a physical challenge; it became a masterclass in giving and receiving feedback. I vividly recall a moment when, struggling up a steep slope, a fellow hiker named Gary yelled, "Hey, buddy, your backpack's unzipped!" I had a choice: brush it off or embrace it. I chose the latter, preventing my precious emergency Mars Bars from spilling onto the trail. The lesson? Feedback, whether about a backpack or business strategy, is a gift. It's a chance to learn and grow. So, let's apply this. Why do we often get defensive in other aspects of life? Instead, let's be open. Listen, weigh the feedback, and decide. Exciting news: I'm hosting a free online masterclass, "How To Give Feedback that Doesn't Suck." Together, we'll uncover the secrets of fostering a feedback-rich culture for your team's success. 07 Oct 2024 | Leadership Styles Explained: Find Out How You Lead | 00:12:58
Today's episode is talking about what I believe is the most important first step in leadership - knowing your leadership style. Whether you're an aspiring leader, a new leader, someone who's been at it for a while or an absolute seasoned pro, you need to know what your natural leadership style is. So why is this important?
