10 Apr 2024Working WITH Short Employee Tenure with Jamie Bruno00:33:09

“We’d love to hire someone and have them stay 6-8 years, but when it’s not the reality anymore, then shifting that paradigm and mental model [is important.]
-Jamie Bruno

The job market is constantly in flux. Jamie is responsible for the full suite of labour relations and human resources functions, including transformative initiatives such as future-of-work modelling, improved digitization and access to information to enhance employee engagement, and optimizing features of the employee life cycle.

27 Oct 2021Confidence and the Talent Management Leader00:08:51

“It’s so interesting that when we have taken a hit to our confidence, or we change contexts, we often overlook what we bring to the table.” - Lisa Mitchell

During this episode of Talent Management Truths, I’m discussing confidence as it relates to Talent Management leaders.

As I’ve been working to get my podcast launched and out into the world, I’ve been speaking with leaders from all kinds of companies and industries, and I’ve noticed a common reaction amongst many leaders I’ve invited on the show:  “Who, me?”

Perhaps as a profession, we’re just more humble :)  It got me thinking, though, about why this reaction seemed to be so frequent.

In today’s episode of Talent Management Truths, you’ll discover:

  • How important it is to challenge the stories in our heads when we face a change in context
  • Why clarity of purpose is critical for pushing past feelings of not being good enough
  • 3 questions to help you think about how confidence is showing up for you these days

19 Jan 2022The Power of Community and Belonging00:16:24

“When I choose to do the opposite of what I feel like doing - curling up in a lonely ball for instance - and just reach out a little to my brilliant network of friends and colleagues and clients and acquaintances, I start to come back to myself.”

 - Lisa Mitchell

As Covid and the headlines  wear us down even further - it can be easy to retreat inside ourselves - to put a sort of isolation helmet on that muffles the world and people around us. This kind of retreating feels easy at the moment, and yet it’s damaging when sustained. SO much so that the UK government actually created a Minister for Loneliness post in 2018.

So what is the antidote?  The antidote is the deliberate creation of community and belonging vs. waiting for it to come to you.

Tune in to this episode of Talent Management Truths for some inspiration and ideas on how, with a little intention, you can create the community and sense of belonging you deserve.

“It takes collaboration across a community to develop better skills for better lives.”  - Jose Angel Gurria

In today’s episode of Talent Management Truths, you’ll discover:

🍏 The importance of being an initiator when feeling disconnected

🍏 The impact of community and belonging on our success

🍏 Insights about creating a deliberate social ecosystem of learning

06 Apr 2022Evolving Your Career and Impact with Heidi Hauver00:41:35

“What does this person bring or add to our company?”

- Heidi Hauver

Traditionally, companies talk about cultural fit, and may look for linear, progressive career paths.  Today’s interview suggests we turn those traditions on their head and look at what people (including ourselves) can ADD to a particular context, vs. how they fit.  We also discuss what moving from transactional to transformational looks like in action.

My guest is Heidi Hauver who is currently the VP People Experience at Shinydocs, a technology scale up rethinking the way you find, understand, and action your data. Fairly new to her role, she is embracing the question “where do we want to evolve to?” She has won many awards and is an active volunteer in her community.

“HOW are you creative?”

 - Lisa Mitchell

What does creativity mean to you? Creativity is the theme of the month in my mastermind program for Talent Leaders, The Talent Trust -  and so I’ve been thinking a lot about creativity and how this quality is often misunderstood.

For many of us, we think that if we do not know how to draw or paint, that we somehow lack creativity.

What if we accepted that we are all creative in our own way and actually leveraged that creativity more often in the workplace?

What might be possible?

In this episode of Talent Management Truths, you’ll discover:

🍏 The benefits of being creative at work

🍏 A new definition of insanity (thanks for the jump off point, Einstein!)

🍏 My 3 steps for becoming more creative

  • “The Talent world is grey, and there are very few things that are black and white. The black and white things are usually legal and ethical. Living in the grey is about possibilities.”

 - Helen Ashton

HR can feel like a very black-and-white place sometimes - especially for the people it serves.  People in Talent and HR usually acknowledge that the work is more complex in its many shades of grey.  Context and circumstances must be considered for each situation encountered, outside of say, certain strict legal or ethical or pension plan parameters.   Listen in on this episode to explore what living in the grey is all about, and what makes it a reasonable approach.

My guest is Helen Ashton, who is VP People and Culture at Grand and Toy.   Helen holds a Masters in Industrial Relations and HR and previously oversaw HR at Campbell Soup Company and Colgate-Palmolive.  She started out in the military and owned martial arts schools at one point.  We bonded over the fact that both she and my teen son are Tae Kwon Do Black Belts.  Helen thrives in HR because she truly values the impact that HR can have on people’s lives, both professionally and personally.

In this episode of Talent Management Truths, you’ll discover:

🍏 What learning Helen has brought with her from the military into her HR career

🍏 How to avoid rollouts that feel like you need to do a big, heavy sales job

🍏 Insights into being flexible and “living in the grey”

About Helen Ashton:  Helen is responsible for developing and executing the people strategy that aligns with the values and strategic priorities of the organization. She is passionate about creating a culture of belonging, two-way communication, and she is focused on talent development and ESG initiatives.

Helen joined the Grand & Toy family in April 2022 and brings 20 years of progressive experience in the Human Resources function. Her experiences spans a number of industries including automotive, MRO and Consumer Packaged Goods industries. Helen’s career also comprises military service, small business ownership and teaching at the college level.

17 Aug 2022Choosing Your Words with Lewis Eisen00:39:27

“Policies have a tone of voice.”

 - Lewis Eisen

Policies have a tone of voice.  Getting that tone right is key in influencing people to actually follow the policies.    Unfortunately, the tone of written policies in many organizations has not kept up with the shift in how leaders actually speak with their employees in modern times (ie., respectfully). Most of us were brought up to think that rules must be bossy in order to work.   Listen to this episode as we explore some fascinating tips for good policy-writing AND the connection between policy-writing and Talent/HR.

My guest is Lewis Eisen. Lewis is the author of the international bestseller How to Write Rules that People Want to Follow: A Guide to Drafting Respectful Policies and Directives, 3d Edition. His approach to drafting policy has been adopted by groups at organizations across the US, Canada, and Europe.

Over his lengthy career he has been a practicing lawyer, a technology consultant, and a policy writer in the federal government. He has been providing professional training seminars and workshops for 40 years, and is currently a member of the Faculty of the Professional Education Group based out of Minnesota.

In this episode of Talent Management Truths, you’ll discover:

🍏 Illustrative examples of how to rephrase bossy policy language in a way that treats people respectfully

🍏 Why assuming positive intent is an essential underpinning when articulating rules and policies

🍏 The power of “we” in stating behavioual expectations
