20 Sep 2020 | 10. Patricia Riggen | 01:33:34
In this episode, Rosa and Cat highlight the groundbreaking Mexican director, Patricia Riggen. In January 2019, the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative released a report analyzing the gender, race and age of directors across 1,200 top films from 2007 to 2018. Out of 1,200 films, only one film was directed by a Latina director, Patricia Riggen. We examine three of her films: UNDER THE SAME MOON (LA MISMA LUNA) (2007) Single mother Rosario (Kate del Castillo) leaves her young son Carlitos (Adrian Alonso) in the care of his grandmother and illegally crosses the border into the U.S. She hopes to eventually make a better life for herself and her son but toils in a dead-end job as a cleaning lady in Los Angeles. When Carlitos' grandmother passes away some years later, he begins a difficult and dangerous journey to join her. GIRL IN PROGRESS (2012) Grace (Eva Mendes) is a single mom who is often too busy juggling her job, bills and two love interests (Matthew Modine, Eugenio Derbez) to pay much attention to her daughter, Ansiedad (Cierra Ramirez). Inspired by the coming-of-age stories her English teacher (Patricia Arquette) introduces in class, Ansiedad decides to skip adolescence and jump-start her life without her mother. But, when the misguided plan unravels, Ansiedad and Grace must both learn that growing up means acting your age. THE 33 (2015) Disaster strikes on Aug. 5, 2010, as a copper and gold mine collapses in Chile, trapping 33 men underground. With more than 2,000 feet of rock in their way, members of a rescue team work tirelessly for 69 days to save the seemingly doomed crew. Beneath the rubble, the miners begin an epic quest to survive, contending with suffocating heat and the need for food and water. With family, friends and the rest of the world watching, it becomes a race against time and a true test of the human spirit. _________ LATINX LENS RECOMMEND REVIEW BLACK GOD, WHITE DEVIL (1964) During yet another drought-blighted year in the sertão, the arid hinterland of the north-east Brazil, ranch hand Manoel kills his boss after a dispute over money. Manoel and his wife Rosa flee, but instead of finding freedom and happiness, or at least expiation, the pair fall prey in succession to the whims of a black preacher who operates far outside the orbit of the Catholic Church. 22 Nov 2020 | 12. Raúl Juliá | 01:31:54
In this episode Rosa & Cat take an in-depth look at the career of Raúl Juliá. The man who’s known as Gomez Addams had a long challenging journey before that role. Analyzing three films with his documentary functioning as reference, this episode takes a look at Juliá’s unfortunate short-lived career. KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN (1985) A gay man and a political leader are together in a prison. The gay man narrates the stories of two fake movies of his own life. Juliá portrays Valentin alongside William Hurt's Luis Molina. This film is the first to earn an actor an academy award (Hurt) for depicting an openly gay man in film. This may be the film that catapulted Raúl Juliá into the spotlight. Kiss of the Spider Woman is available in its entirety on YouTube. THE ADDAMS FAMILY (1991) In the film that would immortalize Juliá as Gomez Addams, this beloved film follows the Addams family in their search for their long lost uncle Fester (Lloyd). This family comedy showcases the uniqueness and importance of family. The Addams Family is available for rental on any rental platform. THE BURNING SEASON (1994) is based on the true story of Brazilian rubber tapper, Chico Mendes who leads his people in protest against the government and developers who want to cut down their part of the rainforest for a new road and ranch land. The rich and the powerful will stop at nothing, and frequently resort to murder. This would be the last film that Raúl Juliá would star in. Filming while fighting the disease that would eventually take his life, he was honored posthumously with a Golden Globe and Emmy award for his portrayal as Mendes. The Burning Season is available in its entirety on YouTube. RAÚL JULIÁ: THE WORLD’S A STAGE (2019) is the documentary highlighting the Juliá's extraordinary career from his beginnings in his beloved Puerto Rico to his last films in Hollywood. Narrated by family members, former coworkers, and current noticeable Latinx actors, who were influenced by Juliá’s work, this film is bound to open many viewers to the versatility and well rounded talent Raúl Juliá was. This documentary isn’t discussed in depth, but it’s utilized as a resource by our hosts. Watch on PBS or on Amazon Prime for purchase/rental. 25 Mar 2021 | 19. Alfonso Cuarón | 01:30:55
Alfonso Cuarón In this episode of Latinx Lens Catherine and Rosa look at three films directed by Alfonso Cuarón. "Great Expectations" (1998) This second Hollywood directed film is an adaptation of Charles Dicken's classic story. Although it's his least critically acclaimed film, there seems to be some early signs of his unique filmmaking style. "Y Tu Mamá También (2001) Cuarón decides to return to his native country following the unfortunate experience he had filming Great Expectations. The film puts on full display Cuarón's abilities as a well-rounded filmmaker. Not only does he direct this film, but he also writes it. This film would be responsible for making Cuarón a household name. "Children of Men" (2006) Perhaps Cuarón's best film yet, this movie cements his Cuarón as one of the best directors currently working. Bending established genre's, this film challenges the definition of a disaster film by bending it with Sci-fi elements and breaking some elements from both genres. This isn't only Cuarón's best film yet, but one of the best films of all time. The Latinx Lens recommends for this episode is "Like Water for Chocolate" (1992). Directed by Alfonso Arau (this is the episode of the Alfonso's), this film would become the go to film representing Mexico to the world. It has a unique yet memorable story highlighting the importance of tradition, food, family relationships and forbidden love. Please Rate, Review & Subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts! 22 Jan 2022 | 61. Sundance Film Festival 2022: Mija, Riotsville, USA, Nothing Compares and Fire of Love | 00:57:59
Sundance Film Festival 2022 coverage continues for Rosa and Cat. In this episode, they review four films: "Mija" Dir. Isabel Castro Doris Muñoz desperately longed for better representation in the indie music she listened to as a teenager. At 23, she took matters into her own hands and began a career in music talent management, passionately advocating for rising Latinx artists. Her swift success transformed her into a pillar for a community of first- and second-generation Americans seeking collective acceptance and healing through song. When Doris receives news that forces her to reconsider working in music, she finds Jacks Haupt, an auspicious young singer eager to break out of her parent’s home in Dallas, Texas. Beyond the sweet moments of joy, glitter, and hope, Doris and Jacks share the ever-present guilt of being the first American-born members of their undocumented families. For them, the pressure of financial success is heightened because it facilitates green card processing and family reunification. "Riotsville, USA" Dir. Sierra Pettengill A a poetic and furious reflection on the reaction of a nation’s citizens and institutions to the rebellions of the late 1960s. This artful, riveting documentary consists entirely of archival footage that was shot by the United States military or appeared on broadcast television. "Nothing Compares" Dir. Kathryn Ferguson Since the beginning of her career, Sinéad O’Connor has used her powerful voice to challenge the narratives she was surrounded by while growing up in predominantly Roman Catholic Ireland. Despite her agency, depth, and perspective, O’Connor’s unflinching refusal to conform means that she has often been patronized and unfairly dismissed as an attention-seeking pop star. "Fire of Love" Dir. Sara Dosa Katia and Maurice Krafft loved two things — each other and volcanoes. For two decades, the daring French volcanologist couple were seduced by the thrill and danger of this elemental love triangle. They roamed the planet, chasing eruptions and their aftermath, documenting their discoveries in stunning photographs and breathtaking film to share with an increasingly curious public in media appearances and lecture tours. Ultimately, Katia and Maurice would lose their lives during a 1991 volcanic explosion on Japan’s Mount Unzen, but they would leave a legacy that would forever enrich our knowledge of the natural world. With few resources and constant scrutiny by the dictator's minions, Saavedra and his team hatch a bold plan to win the election. Sundance Film Festival 2022 coverage continues for Rosa and Cat. In this episode, they review four films from the festival: "Call Jane" Dir. Phyllis Nagy Chicago, 1968. As a city and the nation are poised on the brink of violent political upheaval, suburban housewife Joy leads an ordinary life with her husband and daughter. When Joy’s pregnancy leads to a life-threatening condition, she must navigate a medical establishment unwilling to help. Her journey to find a solution to an impossible situation leads her to the “Janes,” a clandestine organization of women who provide Joy with a safer alternative — and in the process, change her life. "Marte Um (Mars One)" Dir. Gabriel Martin The Martins family are optimistic dreamers, quietly leading their lives in the margins of a major Brazilian city following the disappointing inauguration of a far-right extremist president. A lower-middle-class Black family, they feel the strain of their new reality as the political dust settles. Tércia, the mother, reinterprets her world after an unexpected encounter leaves her wondering if she’s cursed. Her husband, Wellington, puts all of his hopes into the soccer career of their son, Deivinho, who reluctantly follows his father’s ambitions despite secretly aspiring to study astrophysics and colonize Mars. Meanwhile, their older daughter, Eunice, falls in love with a free-spirited young woman and ponders whether it’s time to leave home. "Emergency" Dir. Carey Williams Straight-A college student Kunle and his laid-back best friend, Sean, are about to have the most epic night of their lives. Determined to be the first Black students to complete their school’s frat party legendary tour, the friends strap in for their ultimate assignment, Solo cups in hand. But a quick pit stop at home alters their plans when they find a white girl passed out on the living room floor. Faced with the risks of calling the police under life-threatening optics, Kunle, Sean, and their Latino roommate, Carlos, must find a way to de-escalate the situation before it’s too late. "Brian and Charles" Dir. Jim Archer An endearing outlier, Brian lives alone in a Welsh valley, inventing oddball contraptions that seldom work. After finding a discarded mannequin head, Brian gets an idea. Three days, a washing machine, and sundry spare parts later, he’s invented Charles, an artificially intelligent robot who learns English from a dictionary and proves a charming, cheeky companion. Before long, however, Charles also develops autonomy. Intrigued by the wider world — or whatever lies beyond the cottage where Brian has hidden him away — Charles craves adventure. 05 Feb 2021 | 15. Bacarau, The Sleepwalkers, Once Upon a Time in Venezuela, I'm No Longer Here, The Mole Agent, La Llorona | 01:44:40
In this episode Catherine and Rosa review six Latin American films, five are selected from their respective country for the International category for this year’s Academy Awards. The sixth film depicts an important message through a unique narrative. Bacurau - This Brazilian film sadly isn’t its country selection to compete for a spot at the Academy Awards, but it doesn’t make any less of an impactful film. Following a group of residents at the hidden city of Bacurau and their response to a series of unusual events that have been unfolding as of late. -- Available on VOD The Sleepwalkers - Argentina’s selection is a raw and difficult look into a family who are sleepwalkers. At the front of the film is a mother & wife who is on the verge of dedicating her time to becoming a writer. A fracture familial foundation decides otherwise and she’s placed in a position of picking between her in-laws or her daughter. -- Once Upon a Time in Venezuela is Venezuela’s selection to compete in the category. A documentary filmed in a period of 7 years shining a light on a community that’s in danger of existence due to sedimentation. Politics, cultural festivities, daily routines, socioeconomic status and more are explored as time runs out for this community. -- Available on VOD I’m No Longer Here Is Mexico’s selection and it’s endorsed by Alfonso Cuaron and Guillermo del Toro. If that doesn’t spark an interest, I don’t know what will. Following a young man who’s forced to immigrate to New York after a misunderstanding with a local gang, this film explores community, culture, alienation, familial relationships, identity, culture shock and more. -- Available on Netflix The Mole Agent is Chile’s representative and it follows an 80 year old man who’s hired to investigate a possible elders abuse situation in a home. A film that starts as an investigative narrative evolves into a harsh reminder to value our elders and to give them the attention and care they need. A sweet, moving, heartwarming and eye opening documentary. -- Available on Hulu La Llorona is Guatemala’s entry and this is a new (and improved) interpretation of the well known myth. Incorporating into a social narrative, Bustamante’s approach is a smart and a heartbreaking look into an Indigenous genocide thats often never talked about. -- Available on Shudder

28 Jan 2021 | 14. Guillermo del Toro | 01:52:01
In this episode of Latinx Lens Catherine and Rosa look into the filmography of Guillermo del Toro. One of the most acclaimed directors currently working in Hollywood, del Toro is responsible for the existence of many beloved films. In this episode they take a look at his first three directed feature films. CRONOS (1993) Guillermo del Toro’s directorial debut is a strong introduction into the imagination of this Oscar winning director. Follows a man who becomes obsessed with an ancient scarab that gives him youth. It’s an intriguing look of familial relationships, religious symbolism, and a bold interpretation of a monster. THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE (2001) This second film visits a historical time in Spain. Taking place in an orphanage, this film depicts the spoils of war. A group of children who become orphans as a result of the war become frightened with the presence of a ghost roaming the area. Again, an intriguing depiction of monsters. PAN'S LABYRINTH (2006) Perhaps his most well known film that’s also critically acclaimed. Follows Ofelia post Spanish Civil war and her discovery of a fantastical magical labyrinth. Latinx Lens Recommends: MACARIO (1960) The first Mexican film to be nominated for an Academy Award in the Foreign (International) category. Macario is a peasant who’s faced with a difficult decision when 3 deities ask him to share his food. Please Rate, Review & Subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts! 21 Jan 2022 | 60. Sundance Film Festival 2022: La Guerra Civil, Tantura | 00:42:08
Latinx Lens is attending the virtual Sundance Film Festival 2022! The festival runs January 20 to January 30. In this episode, Rosa and Cat dive into two documentaries premiering at the festival: "La Guerra Civil" Dir. Eva Longoria Bastón In 1996, Oscar De La Hoya, the charismatic golden boy from East LA, challenged Mexican-born boxing legend Julio César Chávez in what was billed as the “ultimate glory” fight. Mexicans on both sides of the border were forced to choose their favorite champ: the record-holding immigrant from humble beginnings, or the younger and more marketable Olympian born in the U.S. These rivals felt the pressure to prove their athletic superiority, while the fans’ choice of champion revealed the type of Mexican they aspired to be. The film features detailed archival footage and enthusiastic interviews with Chávez and De La Hoya to illuminate a story that transcends language, heritage, and interests. "Tantura" Dir. Alon Schwarz The tape-recorded words “erase it” take on new weight in the context of history and war. When the state of Israel was established in 1948, war broke out and hundreds of Palestinian villages were depopulated in its aftermath. Israelis know this as the War of Independence. Palestinians call it “Nakba” (the Catastrophe). In the late 1990s, graduate student Teddy Katz conducted research into a large-scale massacre that had allegedly occurred in the village of Tantura in 1948. His work later came under attack and his reputation was ruined, but 140 hours of audio testimonies remain. The now elderly ex-soldiers recall unsettling acts of war while disquietly pausing at points they either don’t remember or won’t speak of. Audio from Katz’s 20-year-old interviews cuts through the silence of self-preservation and exposes the ways in which power, silencing, and protected narratives can sculpt history.
