Michael Ribas, Professional Development Coach & Indy 500 Winning Mechanic
Can you believe that we have an Indy 500 winning race mechanic on the show? Not only that though - he has an awesome background in motorsports which includes Penske's Indycar and IMSA programs, worked with Mario Andretti and Paul Newman, and graduated from the Jim Russell Racing School.
Michael Ribas gives us some great advice, "Show up, work hard, and have a good attitude." He applied that advice each and every day and he went from graduating from racing mechanic school to an exciting career in professional motorsports.
In case you didn't know, I'm a huge Roger Penske fan and Michael shares some insights about Roger's work ethic.
It's not all about hard work though - you have to have the opportunity as well. Make the most of the opportunity!
We transition from Michael's motorsports background and talk about his coaching program. More and more people are engaging with coaches whether it's for personal fitness, career growth, personal development, or getting better on the track.
I love this quote he gives, "It's for first time through for all of us." Think about that. This is where a coach can help.
Coaching isn't about giving you the answer, it's about helping you find it.
Michael shares a few ideas on steps you can take to set your goals. What's the goal? What do you want? It's OK to think big, but be realistic.
We've all heard that writing down goals is important. Michael wrote down that he wanted to win the Indianapolis 500. 17 years later he did!
Michael also shares a funny story about the Indycar movie, Driven.

Karting is where it starts for many racers so it only makes sense that we have two guests on this episode that are heavily involved in karting in the midwest.
Like many in our sport, family got them involved in motorsports. At age six Dan started going to the Indy 500 and Eric's dad had a vintage car business and was dragged to Lernerville Speedway.
Dan's worked in the Motorsports industry for over 20 years first as writer, photographer and managing editor for TrackSide Online - an online content service provider working primarily in IndyCar. He also provided PR work for drivers and teams which lead me to a relationship with BeaveRun Motorsports Complex (now Pitt Race), where his kids raced karts.
Eric is a fan of start-ups and has been in karting since 2010. He's just getting his four year old daughter into a kart and his two sons have raced karts for years. Eric enjoys being at the track and supports PKC's goal to get more involved in motorsports.
Pro Kart Concepts was born out of a few opportunities. Pitt Race's continued karting program growth, two new kart tracks being built in Ohio and an opportunity with the OTK brand.
PKC will provide karts sales, set-up, tuning , trackside support, arrive and drives, and consumables. Coaching will be part of their offering as well. These services are needed to grow a success karting program. The goal is to keep their customers on track and out of the garage.
Although we talk about data, karting is simple. It's all about getting on track, running laps and having fun.
Dan was asked what I want to people to learn from this episode he replied, "I’d like to let people know that getting in to karting with their family is about making memories together that can’t be replicated. For a fortunate few it may result in a lifetime career but for all it’s a lifetime of memories. "

Like many of our guests Chris grew up in a motorsports family.
Chris raced jet skis and has a funny Late To Grid story that he shares. He made it to the Jet Ski World Finals in 1998! When he was done racing on water he found the SCCA and started racing RX-7s.
In 2004 he started LMS-EFI and has been focused on engine management systems, data loggers, dashes, and complete vehicle wiring. While his focus is on Mazda and rotary, Chris works on many other makes and models.
He now races an ex-NASCAR car in GTA and ST2 in NASA. How fun! He set a track record at Gingerman in GTA and won a sprint race at Mid-Ohio in the RX-7 that I now own. He's fast!
What keeps interested in motorsports? Customers become friends. He likes the people and the smell of race fuel.
He's very thankful that his wife and sons are supportive of his racing and the business.

Jimmy Peters from Resolute Motorsports Club joins me on the latest edition of the Late To Grid podcast.
It all started with a 1972 Chevy Nova that was built for Autocrossing and track days. Jimmy found a gap in track day offerings and wanted to create something that would fit everyone's schedule. So now he's building a 500 acre motorsports venue!
Lots of great insights in this episode from how to tackle a big project to how networking helps connect you with people that can help you.

So why listen to this episode? My guest, Vinnie Taibi, does an awesome job of explaining the progression from volunteer to being an on track racer. Plus he walks us through what Time Trials event looks like.

We talk about how Vinnie got into motorsports which was, of course, influenced by family as it many times is. We also cover the cars that Vinnie has owned and there's a great Integra story in there too.
We need more people like Vinnie in our sport. He's not afraid to share and try new ideas. He's generous with his time and he has lots of energy.
One of the best quotes from Vinnie is, "Come from the cars and stay for the people." This is really what's it about. It's about having fun with others, building relationships and helping each other get better.

Brandon Anderson seems to be everywhere. In fact, when I interviewed Brandon he was at an Air BnB while attending Grid Life.
Brandon got involved with Autocross in 2005 and has participated in events all over the nation. He started doing HPDE's in 2008 and instructing in 2016. And then started Rallycross in 2014. He's done endurance racing with Lemon's in 2017, now run with Lemons, ChampCar, NASA and hopefully SCCA this year! He's been a TimeTrials and TrackNight volunteer since 2018. And in 2021 he took on the role of SoloChair with Neohio SCCA.

At our recent Motorsports Expo, tires was the most popular topic discussed so I thought it was a good idea to have Mike Kubiak on to talk about track day and race day tires.
Mike spent six years as a tire engineer and now works for a friction (brakes) company. He is a successful Time Trial racer and had our attendees on the edge of their seat at the Expo.
We cover everything from how to select tires to tire storage. We talk about getting the most from your tires, tire pressures, and how to read your tires.

Being behind the wheel requires physical and mental fitness and Trey Shannon explains to our listeners how fitness plays an important role in making sure that drivers are ready to be their best on track. Trey is the Performance Director at PitFit Charlotte in Cornelius, NC.

Bill is back in the Atomic Autosports studio to bring you a new podcast format titled; Beers with Bill. The idea is to catch up with previous guests over a beer and talk about racing and life.
For the first edition of Beers with Bill, Mike Kubiak is on the podcast. Mike is the kind of guy that makes being at the track enjoyable. He's always smiling, is willing to help, and is a great competitor.
Bill caught up with Mike just a week after the SCCA Time Trial event at Nelson Ledges where, despite a broken spring, he brought home some hardware. BTW, he was Late To Grid during this event!
Check your car, fluids, pads, and bolts prior to an event
Check your ego. After 18 years he is still hiring coaches. Look for areas to fix
Bring lots of water
Also discussed on this episode; Mike's sponsors, Grid Life, updates and modifications to Mike's car, tires, and making set up changes to your car.

Wow, we covered a lot of topics with Kyle Lockrow!
If it has an engine, Kyle will race it! He started in karts and has raced modifieds, legends, late models, sports cars, and has worked with NASCAR truck teams on testing. Plus, he's a regular spotter and coaches drivers. Does this guy sleep? Kyle shares some great advice:
Get into wheel to wheel
Take a breath
Have light hands
Get a driver coach
Get this...Kyle shares a story of how one of the drivers he coaches improved his marriage through being better on-track. Seriously!

Bill interviews Manfred Woodall who became interested in motorsports through the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix when he was 13. Manfred bought a Honda S2000 and started autocrossing. He then campaigned a Pontiac GXP Soltice.
Then in 2018 he hunted down a Camaro to get back involved.
Manfred talks about how he loves being at the track and the motorsports community.
He also shares the news he received earlier this year regarding a cancer diagnosis. The great news is that he fought and won! This serves as a great reminder that men need to get their PSA test (prostate-specific antigen test).
Manfred provides an interesting perspective that motorsports doesn't have to be obsessive as sometimes competition can sometimes overrun life. I am glad he shares this as I believe that some people get scared off thinking that it has to be all-encompassing, which it doesn't. Being at the track should be fun.
Advice shared:
Slow down to go fast
Look and anticipate
Have a routine
What's next for Manfred? Maybe vintage racing in a Datsun 240Z or a BMW 2002.
Spoiler alert! He's never been late to grid - he shares how he gets to grid early.

Matt is an orthopedic surgeon who recently pivoted to become a tech entrepreneur and started Towlos.com which connects trailer owners with trailer renters. Like most great ideas Matt saw the need for access to trailer rental when he and his friends wanted to trailer their Corvettes to the track.

Renting a race car is a great way to get on track and not worry about the hassle of storing, prepping, maintaining, and transporting you race car. Frank and Bill discuss the rental programs that Grass Paddock Motorsports offers and how it works.
Frank Schwartz is one of the driving forces behind the growth of B-Spec racing and many people called him crazy for buying a B Spec race car. He applied his business knowledge to B Spec racing and now it's the fastest growing form of racing in the United States.
Curious on how B Spec racing started? We cover it!
Frank is a great example of why I love this sport. He's always willing to help others, he's interested in growing the sport, and it's all about having fun at the track.
When asked about the best motorsports advice he has received, he shares a very interesting perspective. The advice was ill timed. Meaning the advice given did not have a foundation to be helpful. Wow! Think about that for a moment. As we give younger drivers advice let's make sure they have foundation to build upon with the advice we are sharing.
Frank's advice to those that want to get started...get to the track as a volunteer or spectator. Better yet, crew for a team. You'll learn quite a bit.
Why rent a race car?
You don't have space for a race car at home.
You are just getting started
You've entered a driver's school
You race three events a year - it's financially less expensive to rent
You don't have the time to maintain a race car (time vs money)
Franks shares that he's always Late To Grid - and with good reason. He's helping his renters!

Toby Weber started competing in Autocross events in 2014 in a Lotus 7 and has grown his motorsports endeavors to include track days, time trials and wheel to wheel racing. He also works with Xtreme Xperience as an instructor.
Toby has had a stellar 2023 season including a first place in class at the 14 hour enduro at Nelson Ledges Road Course. In 2024 he plans to continue competing in the OPTT time trials, continuing with endurance racing, and working with Xtreme Xperience.
Toby once thought that motorsports was only for people with money. It's important for everyone to understand that motorsports is open to everyone, regardless of money and it's great that Toby got involved as he's an asset to our sport.
When it comes to advice, Toby highlights that seat time is important and people should just go out and try it to see if it's something they want to do. A big take-a-way he had from this season is to only change one item on your car at a time. Too many changes means that you can't pinpoint what worked and what didn't.

The off-season is shorter than we think and Michael Ribas joins the podcast to share some ideas about how to make the most of the off-season.
Michael Ribas is a performance coach (business, life, everything) and was a guest in season two of the Late To Grid podcast. Here's his episode.
Here are some ideas to get you started in your off-season planning and execution: 1. Take a break. Connect with your family. Relax 2. Perform a recap of the season. What worked, what didn't, and what do you need to do before next season. 3. Make a plan. Create a budget, make a schedule, ask for help, check your spares and trailer, measure your progress. 4. Set the goal and execute.
Don't forget about the who. Spend time working on you.
The best advice he has received? 1. Did dad said, avoid getting in a fight. If you do get in a fight - hit first! This means take action. 2. Effort = Results (my favorite).
Words of wisdom that Michael shares with his clients includes meeting people where they are. Where they are in their life, their sport, their career. Your advice only has meaning if it's applicable to where they are.
Michael offers a special offer to Late To Grid Listeners - Save $100! The first step in Michael's coaching program is a strategy session that costs $175, but he's knocking a $100 off. What started out as trolling 944 Fest on Instagram turned into lots of fun banter and an excellent weekend at Nelson Ledges playing with Porsches and having a great time.
It only made sense to have Travis and Cat on the podcast to talk about 944 Fest and their backgrounds.
We talk about a lot of different things and we laugh a lot too. They seem to make quite a few OnlyFans.com references -that must be a site for 944 things. They have ten, yes ten 944s. They have a very cool story about how they met. Plus, they host a great event.

Les Epps who races and works with Hard Times Racing and Round 3 Racing has a smile and personality that would light up any room and truly loves motorsports and racing.
At age five his father said you can be an architect or race car driver and you know how Les answered. His dad then bought him go kart and put an asphalt track in their front yard.
He started autocrossing and then did a three day HPDE event at Autobahn. He was hooked.
Advice from his mom - you can have anything you want as long as you work hard at it.
Les has worked hard and put the effort in to get where he is today. Heck, he's delivered pizza in his race car!
His 2023 has been, in his words, smooth. He was at the track for 33 weekends in 2022 and it was a hectic season. As Les has worked on time management, it's helped make things smoother. Plus, he's driven three new tracks and three new cars this season - which he has enjoyed.
Les just drove across the country in a Celica to compete at Grid Life at Laguna Sega. We talk about T-Pain, what Grid Life is all about and his experiences driving a car with fixed seats and no cruise control. Do all Skittles taste the same? We discuss it!
He's won at Daytona and is looking forward to tackling the Indy road course at some point.
Why does Les bring champaign to every race?
Advice from Les: Nothing comes for free and you have to prove yourself Just show up Have fun There's lots to do in motorsports - find what you enjoy Kevin's first to grid reasoning
Best advice he's received...You can either drive the car into the trailer or put it in sideways. Know your limit.
Les gives a lot of shoutouts to those who have helped him get on track.

With Camp being so new to racing he shares so many interesting points that can really help our listeners get started in racing.
Camp's advice to those that want to get into racing, network, meet people, get to the track. He also shares this nugget, If you don't try, the answer will always be no. How powerful!

Johnny Miller is a very accomplished race car driver and he shares so much!
The conversation ranges from Johnny's racing career which started in SCCA autocross to why being relevant is important in your racing career (hint: this helps with getting sponsorships for grassroots racing).
He grew from Autocross to racing professionally in Trans Am, IMSA, and NASCAR.
He's set track records at many tracks, landed great sponsorships, and built a tire business to help grow grassroots racing.
Did you know that the government of New Zealand once paid racers and teams to race in their country? Johnny talks about it.
Johnny shares the idea that racing is a game of details. He's right! Listen in as he talks about this concept. His advice? Set goals - it helps get you where you want to go.
We also talk tires. How to store, where to start with tire pressures, how to choose.

The new year is almost here and it's time to get your goals in place to make sure that you won't be late to grid.
Why is goal setting so important for racers? We have a lot to do and having goals will help us make decisions that get us to the desired outcome that we have for our racing efforts.
In this episode I walk you through how to set goals and detail out the items that need to be completed to achieve your goals. It might seem like work, but having your goals outlined will help you save time and money. Who knows, it might help you win races too!
I mention the Johnny Miller episode and here's the link.
I review the SMART approach to goal setting...
The goal needs to be
S – Specific
M – Measurable
A – Achievable
R – Relevant
T – Time-Bound
I hope this episode helps you achieve your racing goals!

Matt Harbert is an automotive technician at Atomic Autosports and Rad Air in Wickliffe. He's also the team lead on the Rad Air Racing team and I finally had him on the podcast.
Matt's full of energy and represents the great part of our sport. I am excited to see people like Matt taking an interest in grassroots racing and contributing to the industry rather than just be in the industry.
Matt shares some great advice...
Don't modify your car crazy
Skip Miata and buy a Corvette
Have fun (many people have told him this)
Get seat time
Change your fluids and look over your car prior to an event
Has Matt been Late To Grid? Very close and there's a big lesson involved.

Compete with those that are better
Don't modify your car
Find a way to record you runs (Go Pro or similar camera)
Just get to an event!

This week on Late to Grid, Bill welcomes Taylor Allen to the Atomic Autosports studio for a chat about his motorsports journey, which has taken him from a surprising first track day experience in a Buick Regal to driving vintage Indy cars.
Taylor shares his early days of autocrossing and time trials, his hilarious “Taylor Allen” decals on his friends’ cars, and the story behind his Corvette crash at Gingerman. He talks about his experiences racing with RadAir Racing, including their memorable (and often bizarre) radio chatter, and shares his plans for upcoming events, including wheel-to-wheel races in his Corvette and a vintage race at Lime Rock.
Taylor gives valuable advice on how to become a better driver, the importance of camaraderie in motorsports, and his unique approach to preparing for an event with his well-organized checklist and tubs of gear. He also reveals the one thing he always forgets, even with all his preparation.
Whether you're a seasoned racer or just starting out, this episode is packed with insights, stories, and tips from a passionate racer who's living his motorsport dream. Don't miss out on this engaging conversation with Taylor Allen on Late to Grid!

Friends since high school, Bill Snow and John Thorne both have careers in the automotive industry and they still play with cars. So why not have a podcast talking about their car projects while interviewing industry insiders?
In Episode 1 Bill and John talk about the name, Late to Grid, and John's team name of procrasti-Racing and how they met in high school. Not only were they both cross country runners, but they both a Z cars. John a 1984 300ZX Turbo and Bill a 1982 280ZX.
The name, Late to Grid? Well, Bill and John are always running late and their track cars are never ready for the event! Hence, they are always late to grid.
What's funny is they don't have the time to record and produce a podcast - so how will this impact their car projects? You'll have to listen to find out. Speaking of funny, John is a stand up comic!
Join these guys are they give podcasting a try.

John talks about Ranger Rover Land Rover wheel fitment and Spec E46 questions. Bill's been slow to start his projects.
Just like in life things can be stuck and John asks about stuck wheels on an E46 wagon and how to get them unstuck. Again, similar to getting unstuck in life... use a little persuasion.
We interview Tim Wadsworth from Track First in Richfield Ohio.
