Love Is a Verb, with author Dominick Domingo
00:25:05
Host Dominick Domingo shares an article he was invited to contribute to Johnny Tan's online magazine, 'Inspirations for Better Living.' Titled, 'Love Is a Verb,' the article chronicles Dominick's journey of manifestation—from dovetailing with the universe through losing everything but his life, to reclaiming his agency in the world. The mechanics of overcoming are universal: In The Alchemist, Paul Coelho speaks of Beginner's Luck: the alchemy that occurs when the universe conspires in favor of those who pursue their personal legend. Also universal is the milestone in which the alchemy of youth yields to disillusionment. The means by which we recover our powers of manifestation—and thereby our agency in the world—have everything to do with self-love.
This inspiring talk explores the life-altering power of choosing love over fear and the tranquility, satisfaction, and inner peace that comes when we seek out opportunities to love more.

Indie Publishing with Author and Literary Editor Elizabeth Suggs
01:24:48
Join us as we chat with Elizabeth Suggs of Collective Tales Publishing and Editing Mee. Her literary prowess in Speculative Fiction, among other genres, is as inspiring as it is eye-opening. We discuss the written word from the perspective of both writer and publisher, hats Elizabeth wears equally well. Our conversation ventures from the driving force behind the human compulsion to tell stories, through quieting voices of doubt in order to take command of an author's voice, to the delicate dance of preserving that unique voice throughout the editorial process.
As someone who once lost and fervently reclaimed her love for writing, Elizabeth understands the trials creatives endure. An intimate knowledge of the ever-evolving publishing world equally informs her work as both editor and publisher. We discuss Collective Tales' mission to nurture both the greener and more seasoned authors with whom they partner. In exploring the sometimes delicate relationship between author and editor, we arrive at the notion that respectful partnerships can be the alchemy that turns rough drafts into literary gold. So, lend us your ears and embark on this exploration of literature's power to define, challenge, and shape our existence.
Guest Bio: Elizabeth Suggs is the co-owner of the indie publisher Collective Tales Publishing, owner of Editing Mee, and is the author of a growing number of award-winning published stories, one of which was part of an Amazon Bestseller collection. She is also a book reviewer, popular bookstagramer, and cosplayer. When she’s not writing or reading, she’s playing video and board games or making cookies.

LGBTQ Representation Part 1
00:47:58
Dominick and Virginia both have a ‘horse in the race’ when it comes to LGBTQ Representation: Dominick as a Queer author and filmmaker and Virginia raised a trans child. Their passion for the topics of Diversity and Inclusion, as well as Representation of underrepresented communities, means they have long awaited this episode. It was finally time to fit it in, in order to lay the groundwork for future guests who are equally invested in not just positive but accurate representation.
This episode (part one of a two-part series) traces the history of Queer Representation in Cinema. Dominick reads excerpts from ‘Language of the Soul,’ the book on which this podcast is based, in which he lays out the long but steady arc toward where we stand today when it comes to queer stories, characters, tropes, cliches, and stereotypes. In light of the immense progress as well as the pendulum swings and regressions, there is plenty of room for speculation about what the future holds. This episode promises to be relatable to some and eye-opening for others. Please join us as we set the stage for future conversations by telescoping our history; things are never what they seem!
Host Bio: Dominick is a former Disney artist who Visually Developed Lion King, Pocahontas, Hunchback, Tarzan and Fantasia. His live-action films won awards in festivals and Original Screenplay credits led to a career in the literary realm. His literary fiction and Narrative Nonfiction have been included in anthologies, winning awards like Craft Literary and Writer’s Digest. Dominick’s YA trilogy, The Nameless Prince, maintains five stars on B&N and Amazon since launching in 2012. Dominick’s experience in a broad range of formats and genres—all storytelling—has gifted his perspective on the ‘rules’ of each—the various ways storytelling touches hearts and minds. Dominick founded the Entertainment Track at his alma mater, Art Center. All he's learned in the trenches informs his latest book, Language of the Soul. www.dominickdomingo.com

LGBTQ Representation Part 2
00:52:44
This episode is Part 2 of a 2-part series: LGBTQ Representation. Part one laid out the history of Queer Representation in cinema. This episode follows up by chronicling Dominick's personal experience as a gay man in the context of Tolerance, Diversity & Inclusion and Media Representation. Together, both episodes are meant to lay the groundwork for future conversations with guests equally invested in LGBTQ Representation.
Sharing a Reader's Digest version of his coming out essay, Jesus Shoes, Dominick takes us back to 1968, when he arrived on the planet. Despite being the peak of the Sexual Revolution, things were more backward than one might think. Derogatory terms like 'gay' and 'fag' rolled off tongues effortlessly; 'gay' was the opposite of 'cool.' Dominick threw those terms around as much or more than his elementary school-aged friends— until the moment he realized they applied to him.
Somehow, despite that innate self-acceptance, society's negative messaging somehow 'got in' over time. The essay goes on to dissect the mechanics by which that occurs— how self-love can be eroded by exposure to negative stereotypes, tropes, and even rhetoric or innuendo. Despite his best efforts, Dominick found himself fulfilling a cultural narrative by becoming exactly what was described in that Freudian book forty years earlier, in the form of a full-blown AIDS diagnosis. Dominick's 56-year (& counting) arc is the prime example of the power of persistent narratives to manifest as reality. And our personal power to reframe those narratives. In the spirit of this podcast, we have the free will to 'tell our own stories.' This episode concludes with Dominick's journey toward reclaiming his agency in the world through self-love. It's sure to inspire!

The FUTURE of STORY with Dominick and Virginia
01:42:44
Have you ever considered that the tales we tell are the very threads that weave the fabric of society? Virginia and Dominick explore this notion, unraveling the complex relationship between storytelling and its pervasive impact on both personal growth and cultural evolution. Language of the Soul's latest episode is an eclectic mix of discussions around the essence of art, the intricate balance between artistic freedom and societal responsibility, and the subtle ways in which implicit biases color our everyday interactions.
Join us as we speculate about the elusive definitions of artistic integrity and literary value. What truly defines transformative content? We're reluctant to abandon the traditional tenets that celebrate the potency of storytelling, yet cannot ignore how technological advancements and cultural shifts are reshaping them. We challenge the listener to consider distinctions between literary and commercial fiction, between STORY and mere CONTENT and the waning currency of the human touch and artistic merit in the face of Generative AI.
Equally threatening to both freedom of expression and art for art's sake are forces like sanitization, whitewashing, revisionist history and cancel culture. What is at stake when the mainstream loses the sophistication to parse between transformative story and propaganda? The stakes could not be higher in the face of impending fascism. The question is: what are we going to do about it? What types of stories are we going to tell, moving forward? How can we actively co-create with pendulum swings in human dialectic and shape the future we aspire to? In short, what is the FUTURE of STORY?

When the veil between life and death seems fragile, where do we turn for answers? Join us as we discuss the afterlife with writer and musician-turned-filmmaker Ben Harl. As owner and Creative Director of Silver Compass Studios, Ben has written, directed, and produced several award-winning short films and is in post-production on his first feature film, a documentary Afterlife.
In the latter half of our discussion, we cast a spotlight on the ways in which the pandemic has reshaped our spiritual landscapes and confronted the often-avoided topic of mortality with honesty and vulnerability. The episode navigates the psychological depths of grief and abandonment, touches on the intersection of science and religion, and contemplates the concept of faith, reincarnation, and our individual contributions to the collective consciousness.

Cinema and the Quest for Authentic Representation with filmmaker Jay J. Levy
01:47:14
We are joined this week by filmmaker Jay J. Levy, who offers us a peek behind the curtain of his creative process as a storyteller, his location services business, and his current collaboration with comedy writer Russ Woody: a comedic web series titled, 'Poster Pickers.' Jay does not identify as a gay filmmaker but rather as a filmmaker who happens to be gay. In other words, he strives for the universal. Even so, he shares his views on LGBTQ representation in cinema. We engage in an honest conversation about the challenges of conveying authentic narratives like that of Jay's coming-out film, "Dirty Magazines." The discussion expands to embrace the evolution of queer cinema and how gay film festival audiences' appetites have matured over the years. Moreover, we delve into the portrayal of the LGBTQ+ experience in a changing societal landscape and how the art of cinema can bridge generational divides, serving as a conduit for understanding and healing.
Guest Bio: Jay J. Levy is a writer, director, and location scout, doing each with equal passion and precision. "Dirty Magazines" was his first breakout short film that won a number of Best Film and Best Short nods. Unnerving comedy with a serious undertone seems to be the voice at play. An absurd new web series, "The Poster Pickers," is also available as Jay partners with established comedy writer Russ Woody to pose as contentious film critics who recommend films based solely on the poster. 01:54:26
Have you ever gazed at the night sky and felt a profound connection? Join us as we explore the intersection between art and human experience with iconic American Illustrator Greg Spalenka. We discuss the power of image—narrative and conceptual—to shift personal and societal paradigms. We discuss 'knowing thyself' and connecting that core essence with a sense of purpose, thereby owning authentic self-expression that transcends. The evolution of cinema, the role of art in education, and the balance of masculine and feminine energies in human development all culminate in a rich tapestry of discussion.

Creative Expression is for Everyone with Ceramics Artist and Author Shelley Finance
02:07:31
Dominick and Virginia welcome the walking embodiment of creativity in action, a guest who will inspire with her intimate knowledge of the creative drive and her championing self-expression for all. Shelley Finance is also a friend of Dominick's from high school. They grew up in the next-door-to-Hollywood but ironically unglamorous provincial town of Burbank, CA. The two, along with Virginia, discuss how creative efforts serve the individual and the products of them serve society at large. They discuss the age-old standoff between one's first love of muse and true earthly connection. They acknowledge how relationships rely on mutual respect for each partner's respective 'church'—his or her sacred practice. They explore the voices of doubt that must be silenced in order to accept a calling and thereby discover one's authentic voice--as well as how each gender is institutionally shamed for the pursuit.
Guest Bio:Renaissance woman, Shelley Finance expresses her creativity through both her writing and ceramic art. STORY and POLITICS with Dominick and Virginia
00:44:43
Join Dominick and Virginia as we unravel the intricate dance between narrative and politics, as well as the age-old role of STORY in political campaigning. In this episode, we spotlight the media's role in shaping perceptions and its troubling relationship with misinformation. Our discussion warns against inflammatory rhetoric and champions the return of nuance to policy discussions (in lieu of polarizing issues into binary categories.) This kind of self-regulation is essential as we grapple with complex geopolitical issues during this campaign season and election cycle. We are being called upon to audit our own cherry picking and confirmation bias as we develop an awareness of identity politics. Bipartisan solutions lie solely in retiring echo chambers and the all-too common lifestyle of living in respective bubbles. In the spirit of Language of the Soul Podcast, we are indeed 'turning a page,' culturally. Our call to action is to join in the paradigm shift. To join in the telling of a NEW story--one about who we choose to become moving forward--one about interconnectivity and the march toward human potential.
