03 Sep 2018 | 5: DB: Raising cashflow awareness | 00:09:30
As defined benefit pension schemes mature and become cashflow negative, cashflow management becomes increasingly important. Schemes, particularly underfunded ones, may be better off focusing on being cashflow aware than being cashflow matched. In this discussion, Graham Moles highlights that it remains important not to consider cashflow management in isolation of other scheme risks. 09 Sep 2018 | 7: Factors: Should we be worried about overcrowding or capacity? | 00:18:02

20 Sep 2018 | 9: Demographic strategy: the cost of unhealthy living | 00:23:18
Raising the retirement age can help with the fiscal costs of living longer – but our unhealthy lives could force us to look at other options. We’ve become used to rising life expectancy, yet lately statistics seem to show that the rate of improvement has slowed. 20 Sep 2018 | 10: DC: Challenging retirement stereotypes | 00:36:38
The landscape for defined contribution is changing – for savers and retirees, employers and trustees, and for those who are responsible for managing client assets. In partnership with Ignition House, we spoke to some DC members (aged between 55 and 65) about their saving and spending patterns as well as their approach to life after work. One of the key findings was the desire for flexibility. Each retirement journey is different and needs to be customised for the individual’s income and retirement aspirations. Retiring the 4% rule: Decumulation demystified The 4% drawdown rule forms the basis of many advisers’ decumulation propositions. Where there was once complexity – and expensive portfolio analysis – the rule promises simplicity; set, forget, and spend (if required). However, our research shows that the results can often vary significantly depending on when you decide to start saving for your retirement and asset allocation decisions. 23 Oct 2018 | 15: DB: The strategic case for alternative credit | 00:16:49
The falls over the past two years in high yield and emerging market debt (‘alternative credit’) credit spreads, along with indications of late-cycle behaviour in the US, has made some investors nervous about allocating to these areas. But should pension schemes reconsider? We discuss attractive qualities of alternative credit and how fund manager Martin Reeves has his whole family invested in high yield. 31 Oct 2018 | 16: Property: The future of leisure | 00:23:46
The way people are spending their free time is changing. Successful leisure properties are destination locations – a place to socialise, network and be entertained. From escape rooms and trampolines, to the classic cinemas and bowling alleys, discretionary spending at leisure properties is increasing as people seek more ‘experience’ activities. This week, we talk about how leisure businesses are rising to meet this challenge and that owners of leisure property need to be as responsive and forward-thinking as their occupiers. 07 Nov 2018 | 17: DC: Reducing money worries with financial wellbeing | 00:23:14
Retirement and pensions can often seem a long way off for many people – we all still need and often worry about money for everyday living so how can we help individuals see the value in saving for the future? 14 Nov 2018 | 18: Politics & policy: Freedom for the central banks and unconventional policy | 00:27:17
In the next economic downturn, central banks will likely have to reach further into their unconventional playbook. The days of simply cutting interest rates in periods of economic and market stress are behind us. In the short term, markets have an unhealthy obsession with parsing every word and phrase of central bankers for clues to their immediate policy intentions. But which policymakers have the most freedom to act and what does that imply about asset prices? 02 Jan 2019 | 24: Investing in emerging market debt | 00:24:58
US interest rates rises and the return of volatility have made investing in emerging market bonds seem like a dangerous place these past twelve months. However, larger shifts like a rising middle class and favourable demographics look set to fuel the growth of this asset class over the long term, argues Head of Emerging Market Debt, Uday Patnaik. 09 Jan 2019 | 25: Property: What makes a successful city? | 00:38:53
Why are some cities thriving creators of jobs and growth? Is a local university a driver of innovation or does it risk turning the area into a ‘student’ town? How important is making the commuter trains run on time in an age of flexible working? A strong city relies on many factors to drive employment growth but when successful, we believe this is associated with resilient and growing property income and therefore better investment performance. 15 Jan 2019 | 27: Growth investing – A stock eat stock world | 00:28:03
After a difficult few months, it's only natural for the old debates between investment styles and longevity of economic cycles to resurface. Let’s not forget, we've had a decade-long run of ‘growth’ stocks outperforming value-driven stocks, while volatile periods inevitably lead the market to question whether growth investing has had its day in the sun. We invited Gavin and Matthew to explain the fundamentals they look for in high-quality growth stocks, from Aston Martin’s astonishing brand power to Fever-Tree’s international growth ambitions. 23 Jan 2019 | 28: Quantitative tightening: What’s it all about? | 00:28:04
Analogy #1: If you laid out in $1 bills the amount that has been bought by central banks over the last ten years, you would end up covering an area around five times the size of Wales. Ahead of the European Central Bank and Federal Reserve meetings happening later this month, we invited Chris and Ben to the podcast to discuss central banks’ reversal of their quantitative easing programmes – a process also known as quantitative tightening – and the impact it’s had on markets. They talk us through the monetary policy in practice and highlight the slightly different ways the LGIM investment teams see the situation. Following the release of an eye-opening UN report on climate, the time is ripe for investors to act with their own money. This week we’re checking in with Iancu and Yasmine to talk about how we’ve reached the end of the road for coal, the development of exciting new carbon-capture and renewable technologies, and how being an active owner can help accelerate the shift to the low-carbon economy. 06 Feb 2019 | 30: DC: De-risking dilemmas | 00:29:48
Getting the mix of assets in a portfolio belonging to someone coming up to retirement is so important. There are a lot of different factors to take into account when you’re looking at a de-risking ‘journey’ including diversification as well an individual’s particular aversion to loss. With many people not even considering their retirement date until even a few years, a thoughtfully designed proposition has to allow for a considerable degree of flexibility and consider a number of realistic behavioural assumptions. 15 Feb 2019 | 32: In conversation with: Simon Chinnery – painter, poet, Peru | 00:30:13
Behind every role, there’s a story. We’re exploring the lives and careers of people across LGIM to understand more about what brought them to asset management, the changes they expect to see in the investment industry and – if they had to pick anything else – what their dream job would be. If you’ve listened to any of our Defined Contribution focused episodes, you will have heard Simon’s voice. Through his self-professed middle-man role, he always seems to know just the right question to ask to get to the middle of a particularly thorny DC topic, making him a perfect subject for this series. What I had no idea about was that outside of his role, Simon writes poetry and paints – although he sees his father as having been the proper ‘grown-up artist’! Despite having trained as a ballerina, his entrance to finance was via the stock exchange as a Blue Button. The real appeal, however, was the relationships and understanding the individual needs of clients. The future for the world of DC, in his view, is a partnership approach and the development of more intelligent communications. After all, there’s little point inundating members at the very beginning of their pension journey with retirement options! 27 Feb 2019 | 34: Property: The wellbeing investment opportunity | 00:26:18
Property: The wellbeing investment opportunity We’ve all been in meeting rooms where the air has become so stuffy that there’s very little chance of good ideas emerging. Similarly, sitting nearer to a window has been shown to improve employees’ health, energy and performance. We might not often connect real asset investment to health and wellbeing but major trends are bringing it into the mainstream. A societal shift in exercise habits has led to the UK becoming the most overweight of Western European nations and yet has one of the fastest growing gym markets. By tapping into this change in consumer behaviour through our real estate investments, we can put greater emphasis on wellbeing through our retail and leisure holdings. In this episode, we connect the opportunities for increased focus on health and wellbeing in both our professional and personal lives and how both can be beneficial for long-term investors. 01 Mar 2019 | 35: In conversation with: Anton Eser, CIO | 00:18:38
It’s fair to say that growing up in South Africa helped shape Anton Eser into the Chief Investment Officer he is today. Having lived “in one of the emerging markets” through a tumultuous period in that country’s history, he learned that the perspectives on notions of risk and change are very different when compared to other parts of the world. A chance meeting between him, his younger sister and Nelson Mandela had a profound impact as he would come to develop a deep fascination in economics, world politics and behavioural biases – the latter holding clear parallels with managing both his team and funds in his subsequent career. His journey to the role of CIO came by way of fixed income, believing that understanding the credit cycle and liquidity are some of the most important things required to inform a comprehensive macro view. In his view, the key trends for the future of investment management are the continuing transformation brought about by technology, the move from performance benchmarks to client outcomes and the increased client demands for sustainability objectives. 13 Mar 2019 | 37: An ESG checklist for trustees | 00:26:02
How can pension trustees prepare for new requirements on the environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors? New guidelines from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) make it clear that it is not sufficient to focus on a narrow definition of the bottom line in order to meet schemes’ core objective: providing retirement benefits for members. Instead, trustees must also consider the financial materiality of ESG considerations. Joining Simon on the podcast this week is Head of Institutional Clients, Mark Johnson, to cover what trustees need to know about the new guidelines and what needs to be done. If you’d like to read more about our work in this area, our article Material change: a five-step ESG checklist for trustees is available on the LGIM website: http://www.lgim.com/uk/en/insights/our-thinking/ • Mark Johnson, Head of Institutional Clients We want to hear from you! In the late 1990s, when the world of equities was one of pinstriped suits and hard sells, European credit presented exciting new opportunities with a brand new currency. Understanding the financial world as one of simply matching borrowers and lenders, his role as Head of Investment Strategy and Research involves sorting the signal from the market noise. 20 Mar 2019 | 39: Millennials on money | 00:21:49
What do you think of when you hear the word ‘millennial’? The archetype most prevalent in advertising and popular culture is one of an early-twenties, affluent (but not too affluent), city-dweller. But the 1.8 billion generation known as millennials are anywhere between the ages of 23 and 37 – by and large they have left undergraduate education, are well established in the workforce and their spending habits have moved from the novelty to the norm. CJ Fildes and Eliza Grimond join the podcast this week to talk about the latest research on how millennials are engaging with their finances, from real-time spending habit feedback to challenger banks and understanding the need to invest and save for longer. 27 Mar 2019 | 40: Integrating ESG into a factor portfolio | 00:25:11
As record numbers look to integrate sustainable investment considerations into their portfolios, it comes as no surprise that the world of factor-based investing is not immune. According to a 2018 survey conducted by FTSE Russell, 55% of factor investors are looking to incorporate environmental, social and governance (ESG) company analysis but as yet, there’s been no well-defined blueprint as to how this can be comprehensively achieved. Joining Eliza are Adam Willis and Dave Barron to discuss the ins and outs of factor index construction and how schemes are building their factor portfolios to not only potentially outperform traditional market-cap index trackers but also integrate ESG analysis simultaneously. 03 Apr 2019 | 42: Let’s rebuild America | 00:14:12
The recent soft patch in growth and dovish shift from the Federal Reserve has made it less likely that the US enters recession next year. While 2019 may not be the year that the US wholly reinvests in its crumbling infrastructure, it’s certainly at the top of both parties’ 2020 policy targets and neither side will want to be outdone. The market has become very pessimistic about infrastructure-related stocks' prospects but we see several potential catalysts that could trigger a rebound over the next two years. Joining Max on the podcast are Tim Drayson and Lars Kreckel to discuss the team’s contrarian ‘Rebuilding America’ theme and the outlook for US fiscal and monetary policy. 10 Apr 2019 | 43: China: The consumption powerhouse | 00:38:32
Investing in the Chinese economy often deals with particularly impressive numbers. This is an economy which has tripled in size since 2005, even now contributing approximately a third of all world GDP growth despite fears that China’s growth has fallen to a ‘mere’ 6%. When a fifth of all travel expenditure comes from the less than 10% of Chinese citizens who hold passports, the Chinese consumer is already an immense driving force of that growth. Despite this, the medium-term investment outlook for China is often presented as mixed. The surge in debt levels and demographic concerns over an ageing population lead many to fear a Chinese ‘hard landing’. James and Veeral join the podcast for a fascinating discussion on why China looks like 1970s Japan and how the government’s beginning to change its tune on intellectual property rights. From the Melrose-GKN bid to the first results of our Climate Impact Pledge, 2018 was a crucial year for better understanding the decisions companies make and how we can make sure the interests of investors are looked after. Technological developments mean that companies are disclosing more data than ever before on their policies and other environmental, social and governance (ESG) metrics, informing our investment and engagement decisions. 19 Apr 2019 | 45: In conversation with: James Carrick, Global Economist | 00:24:05
Variable or fixed rate mortgage? That’s the first question asked once someone knows you’re an economist, in James’s experience. Despite an original plan to study computer programming, when the school didn’t offer the course he turned to economics, following it through academia and into the Treasury. From the world of computer games to interest rate expectations, we explore James’s search for the ultimate ‘underlying spreadsheet’. In our discussion, James talks about how the loss of his father’s job shaped his views of booms, busts and policy levers, and how the provision of capital from the ‘haves’ to the ‘have nots’ drives economic innovation and creative destruction. 24 Apr 2019 | 46: Build to rent: Rise of the institutional landlord | 00:22:21
This week we’ve returned to that famous British obsession: housing. Now that 20% of the UK population are choosing to rent their home, the expectations of lifestyle renters for their home developments have risen accordingly – such as allowing pets or permanent decoration. The build to rent sector involves the large scale development of new housing stock with the needs of ‘lifestyle renters’ in mind. Although the sector is a comparatively young and smaller part of the UK housing puzzle, build to rent can arguably help meet the needs of renters, local authorities and long-term investors alike. Eleanor Jukes returns to discuss all things renting from how these developments can deliver resilient, inflation-linked incomes, to community engagement, to how residents prefer apartment bedrooms to sit alongside rather than opposite one another because the latter has a distinct ‘prison’ feel... 01 May 2019 | 47: UK broadband infrastructure: at a crossroads | 00:19:41
The race to provide faster broadband is on. But will incumbents be disrupted by the challenger providers: the 'altnets'? The upcoming set of results from BT and their strategy for the future will be crucial in determining the answer. In 2018, UK consumers spent a total of one day a week online, more than twice as much as in 2007. Time spent online, demand for data and the number of devices connected to the internet all continue to grow, generating demand for ever faster and more reliable internet connections. BT currently passes less than a million homes with full fibre, targeting three million by 2022, and potentially leaving the company vulnerable to market share losses from the altnets in the long term. BT’s future depends on this investment decision – will management be willing to take some short term pain to preserve its long-term success? 09 May 2019 | 48: Allocate nimbly and diversify with purpose | 00:27:27
It’s said that the only thing that goes up in falling markets is correlation. Diversification across uncorrelated assets, differentiated sources of returns, and foreign currency exposure can help provide natural risk hedges and still deliver the performance sought by investors. This week, we’re talking to members of LGIM’s Asset Allocation team about why investors need to diversify with purpose and the importance nimble asset allocation. 15 May 2019 | 49: Behind the scenes with Active Equities: Access to management | 00:30:25
Once again we’ve gone behind the scenes to find out how LGIM’s investment teams manages funds. The Active Equities team places a major emphasis knowing the companies in which they’re invested inside and out. This could be anything from knowing how a company will respond to a competitor’s latest innovation to how their strategy will hold up for the next 10 or 30 years. It’s all about building that conviction in the investment case and why corporate engagement and access to management is so important. I sat down with Shaunak Mazumder, Senior Fund Manager, and Matthew Courtnell, Equities Product Specialist, to talk more about how concentrated portfolios can be managed with a collaborative, sustainable and long-term mind-set. In this episode, we talk to Madeleine about her path from netball to new issues. Growing up in Lancashire, she studied Mathematics and Economics, before starting her career on the fixed income floor at Barclays. Having moved from investment banking to asset management nearly four years ago, she can no longer call herself a newbie. Madeleine talks through the changes she has seen so far during her time in the industry, including an increased collaboration with the Corporate Governance team on environmental, social and governance considerations. Her best piece of advice for new starters in fund management? Don’t plan your career; just let it happen! 22 May 2019 | 51: Should we move to a four day week? | 00:31:02
Is a four day working week realistic — or desirable? Chris Jeffery from our Asset Allocation team and Lara Bernard-Villeneuve in our Active Fixed Income team have looked at the data and think it’s more than a leftist’s pipe dream. Set in the context of a history of declining working hours in industrialised countries, the move does not seem so stark – and need not necessarily trigger a drop in wages. In fact, the boost in productivity accruing to companies and countries who have trialled the measure is clear. With investment implications that stretch from tipping the balance in the workforce away from labour and towards capital-intensive production methods, to a boon for leisure sectors and female participation, join us for an interesting discussion on the opportunities and risks of reduced working hours. 29 May 2019 | 52: Lord Stern at the LSE: The urgency, opportunity and acceleration of climate action | 00:27:21
We’ve heard a lot about the need for urgent climate action in the past few months. Sobering documentaries from David Attenborough and hard-hitting activism from Greta Thunberg and the Extinction Rebellion have brought the issue to the forefront of people’s minds. Investors have a pivotal role in meeting the challenge of financing the transition to a low-carbon future and in finding the wealth of returns opportunities that a low-carbon transition presents.
This week we’re coming to you from the studios at the London Stock Exchange after having interviewed the Lord Nicholas Stern, Chair of the Centre for Climate Change Economics and Policy. Lord Stern joined us for our panel webinar ESG: What to know and what to do with LGIM’s Head of Institutional Clients, Mark Johnson, and others on the importance of environmental, social and governance risks and opportunities to investments.
Without a hint of irony, this episode recording was almost delayed due to Extinction Rebellion protestors having super-glued themselves to the entrance of the LSE.

05 Jun 2019 | 53: How boards can work best – Sacha Sadan, Director of Corporate Governance | 00:33:36
Good governance is crucial to all boards, whether they oversee a FTSE 100 multinational, a multi-billion pound pension scheme or a national charity. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to how boards should be run but through Sacha and his team’s extensive experience in corporate engagement, they’ve learned that there are plenty of ways to evolve and enhance effectiveness.
We know that pressures from executives, stakeholders, as well as the day-to-day oversight of the company or scheme, the role of a non-executive board member has never been more demanding. The increase in regulation and complexity of modern defined benefit and defined contribution schemes has concurrently increased the workload of pension trustees.
This week’s episode looks at some of the best practices the Corporate Governance team have seen in place and the key areas which could help boards manage their many responsibilities.

07 Jun 2019 | 54: In conversation with: Honor Solomon, Head of Retail, EMEA | 00:24:44
Working in her father’s London clothes shop taught Honor two things: that she loved meeting people from all over the world, and that she also loved to sell. In her time in sales teams over her career, she has sought to surround herself with a talented team with great culture – a key combination which helps push everyone to perform to the best of their ability.
In this episode of In Conversation With, we talk about the pain points for so many of her clients (regulation) and how no industry is immune to disruption (especially ours). In addition to her role, Honor also helped set up the Legal & General Inclusion Team which includes a focus on all areas of inclusion as well as providing support for those who look after both young children and ageing relatives – the ‘care sandwich’.
With a black belt in karate and a dream to return to Japan, this episode travels the world of Honor Solomon and what brought her to asset management.

13 Jun 2019 | 55: Absolute return “a genre, not a sector”, with Richard Romer-Lee, Square Mile | 00:27:32
The target absolute return sector has been unloved to say the least. With the offer of ‘investment nirvana’, as Square Mile’s Richard Romer-Lee puts it, these funds look to reduce volatility and still deliver performance in difficult markets.
In this conversation, I sat down with Richard and LGIM’s own Head of UK Retail Distribution, James Crossley, to discuss whether this is a ‘genre, not a sector’, the top concerns he’s hearing from advisers and wealth managers, and how communication and transparency are crucial in managing investors’ risk and return expectations.
This episode was recorded at the London Stock Exchange where Richard had just hosted a live webinar featuring a panel of industry experts on diversification, risk management and the role of alternatives in your portfolios.

27 Jun 2019 | 57: Forecasting the next downturn, with Justin Onuekwusi and Emiel van den Heiligenberg | 00:23:56
Question: Are people at parties talking to you about stocks?
If the answer is ‘yes’ then (1) you could be going to the wrong sorts of parties or, more likely, (2) this could be a qualitative indicator that the economy is in ‘bubble’ territory.
This episode looks at the ways investors can use quantitative and qualitative indicators to try and forecast the next economic recession. After a valiant attempt to explain the economic cycle in just one sentence, Emiel van den Heiligenberg, Head of Asset Allocation, discusses why the triggers of the next downturn will be different and why cycle dynamics means that resilient portfolio construction is more important than ever.
Also joining the podcast is resident Yogi Berra expert and Head of Retail Multi-Asset Funds, Justin Onuekwusi, on how he integrates these indicators and behavioural economics into his portfolio strategy and how the market is ‘like déjà vu all over again’.

03 Jul 2019 | 58: Engaging the nation through technology, with Helena Morrissey | 00:17:09
The responsibility for people’s financial futures has increasingly been transferred to the individual yet a broad majority of the population remain wary of investing. Asset managers, advisers and pension schemes need to emotionally engage people to make investing not only relevant but also appealing. Technology is by no means the panacea to this challenge but it can be a crucial component of that engagement.
The personal finance landscape has gone through a technological upheaval and yet still seems like it has a long way to go. From thoughtfully designed propositions to tailored user experiences, this episode explores some of the lessons learned from Legal & General’s efforts to ‘engage the nation’ in investing, the ways they’ve invested and developed their technology and what’s the future for the direct-to-consumer industry.

10 Jul 2019 | 59: DB: Managing risk in turbulent times | 00:20:32
We’d all love to predict with pinpoint accuracy the timing of any future bouts of volatility and the impact it would have for schemes’ returns. In turbulent times, investing can be like an endless game of ‘whack-a-mole’ – as one risk is removed, another can come to light. While fortune-telling might not yet be an exact science, there are still a number of methods defined benefit schemes can employ to manage their risk.
In this week’s episode, we look at how aligning your asset strategy to your long-term goals, rather than short-term market cycles, can help provide some portfolio protection. The team also discuss the benefits of using natural cashflows to meet the need for income which avoids the risk of selling assets in stressed conditions.

17 Jul 2019 | 60: In Conversation With Sonja Laud, Chief Investment Officer | 00:21:53
Sonja brings a wealth of experiences to her new role as Chief Investment Officer. But at school, her dream job would have been to become a professional horse-rider and fill her time with dressage and show jumping. An apprenticeship at Deutsche Bank introduced her to the world of finance but it was internships at DWS, a consulting practice and in marketing for a not-for-profit organisation which showed her where her career passions lay.
Sonja Laud discusses how there is no status quo for asset managers in a time of structural shifts in regulation, and client demand. But it’s also a sign that asset managers as an industry need to step up to the big societal issues on which clients are looking for action. With regards to LGIM, its clear to her that the next trillion under management will have to come from a very different source than the first.
Hear more about her personal experience with coaching and the importance of mentoring in this wide-reaching episode.
Quick note: This episode was recorded in the previous month while Sonja was still Deputy CIO so there might be a few confusing references!

24 Jul 2019 | 61: Modern Monetary Theory: Are deficit hawks an endangered species? | 00:21:58
Where have all the deficit hawks gone? With mainstream politicians no longer comparing government finances to household saving habits, it appears that a new wave of fiscal spending is on the horizon.
This is part of a growing debate around Modern Monetary Theory, also known as MMT or “a dangerous proposition” if you’re the ECB, about why spending should only be constrained by inflation, how unemployment exists by choice, and that fiscal policy should be the main tool to control economic cycles.
In a world where central banks have become persistently more dovish as inflation targets are missed, the tenets of MMT mean that it has become much easier for politicians to run up larger deficits. In this episode, we explore the potentially radical implications this theory and the changing political landscape could have for inflation and investors’ portfolios.

31 Jul 2019 | 62: Are you getting the most out of your ETF trading? | 00:11:19
Many investors don’t think they need an ETF trading strategy – that is until it’s too late. After all, how different can it be from trading a stock?
But buying and selling ETFs requires a much clearer view on the liquidity of the underlying securities. According to this week’s guest, Annacarla Dellepiane, Head of ETF Capital Markets, employing best practices can shave crucial basis points off of your next transaction. This can include considering market volatility in relation to bid/ask spreads and avoiding specific market events such as opens, close or the dates of major announcements.

14 Aug 2019 | 64: How advisers are managing customers’ risk/return expectations, with Andy O’Shea, Pharon IFA | 00:30:02
We’ve unintentionally created a series in the past few months on the podcast. From the episode with Richard Romer-Lee which touched on the importance of communication with customers to the one with Helena Morrissey about how technology can help advisers reach more of the ‘uninvested’, these form a theme about how we as an industry are communicating with clients.
This week we’re continuing that conversation by inviting Andy O’Shea, Investment Director and Head of Fund Solutions at Pharon IFA, to talk to us about the ways he’s managing client conversations about risk and return expectations, how diversification is important but can easily confuse customers, the burgeoning role of thematics and alternatives, and how we need to look beyond headline costs to an investment’s fundamental value.
Also joining the podcast is Senior Investment Sales Manager, Matt Kemp, to provide his experience of the retail market and briefly discuss his West Ham fanzine, Over Land and Sea.

21 Aug 2019 | 65: Changing of Lagarde: Why personalities matter for central banks | 00:26:23
Christine Lagarde has a CV that makes many of us jealous: partner at the prestigious law firm Baker McKenzie by age 31, finance minister for France during the financial crisis, Chairman of the G20 in 2011 before becoming Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, and most recently, nominated to the presidency of the European Central Bank.
In this episode, we’re discussing how investors can look at changes of central bank leadership and why they matter for dealing with both the ‘five minutes to midnight’ problems and the much less pressing but no less important structural issues facing developed economies. Where many have praised Lagarde’s (small-p) political skills, how can we contrast this to market fears about Jerome Powell over at the Federal Reserve? And here at home, what can we expect from the as-yet unknown replacement for Mark Carney?

04 Sep 2019 | 67: Separating the fads from the long-term trends | 00:31:12
We’re promised so many different things that are going to ‘change the world’ – from ever-smarter smartphones to space tourism. And investing for the long term means that each of us in the market are trying to assess what are the most meaningful changes, the impact they might have on our portfolios and where the new investment opportunities might be. But a question we’re so often asked by allocators and advisers is what’s a genuine long-term investment trend, and what’s a flash-in-the-pan investment fad?
In this conversation, we put together a method investors can use to differentiate the two and ask our guest experts their thoughts on some very esoteric topics, from vaping and cryptocurrencies to electric vehicles and e-sports. Not to be done all at the same time though.

10 Sep 2019 | 68: CIO Outlook: Opportunities in adversity | 00:26:29
When contemplating what the final months of 2019 might have in store, we are probably similar to many other investors in feeling somewhat apprehensive, given the challenges we face: trade tensions, slowing growth, policy uncertainty and, of course, Brexit. Global growth has cooled over the last year and so the key question is whether the world economy has the underlying strength to prevent a number of key risks – from trade tensions, to a manufacturing slowdown, to Brexit – from tipping it towards recession.
This week, Sonja Laud and Emiel van den Heiligenberg discuss the their outlook for markets, their expectations for inflation and why, even in this uncertain environment, the Asset Allocation team still prefer equities to credit.

12 Sep 2019 | 69: Fixed income: Forecasting ‘fallen angel’ downgrades | 00:24:08
The last decade has transformed the investment grade credit market. It’s not just that the size of the market has grown immensely, it’s that the average credit quality is much lower, meaning that risk of ‘fallen angel’ downgrades from investment grade to high yield rating is much higher. When the team stress-tested the investment grade market, the results were surprising: the number of expected downgrades could reach levels not seen since 2016.
We interview Madeleine about the research, why investor’s earlier fears about company over-leveraging have softened as balance sheets improved and why a hard Brexit might not drive up the number of UK downgrades as you might think.

18 Sep 2019 | 70: Real assets: Urban logistics has made the industrial sector exciting again | 00:37:19
E-commerce has changed the way we shop in a rapid space of time, growing at an annual average of 17% according to ONS calculations. But our demand for quick, reliable delivery has driven up the demand for logistics-capable properties closer to urban centres and this has reinvigorated the once ‘steady and dull’ industrial real assets sector. Prologis estimates that e-commerce logistics requires three times the floorspace of conventional logistics – a clear opportunity for investors’ capital.
But investors piling into the urban logistics trend risk overpaying. A careful consideration of both macro location (growing populations, supportive density, and improving consumer spending) and micro location (which side of the low-emission zone will be best for business?) is key for performance.
Our conversation this week dives into the ways this investment theme has developed over the years, why it’s likely to keep growing and also the risks investors should consider before going in guns blazing.

23 Sep 2019 | 71: In Conversation With: Colette Comerford, Head of Inclusion and Culture | 00:28:02
Her path from sports to asset management is a fascinating one – from her first job in Dublin, to London where international clients would mistake her for French because of her distinctly un-Irish name! After having been recruited into recruiting by a recruiter at asset manager M&G, she saw how this world is about connecting with talent and how do we as a company and an industry present ourselves as a place where people can be themselves. Her passions lie in communicating a company’s culture and values, and capturing people’s hearts and minds in creating a more inclusive workplace.
To kick off LGIM’s ‘Inclusion Week’, this conversation covers the whole range of issues surrounding diversity – which have often only been talked about in silos – and why culture matters; it underpins every part of our working lives and is essentially to creating that sense of belonging.

26 Sep 2019 | 72: DB: Is your scheme a well-oiled machine? | 00:14:34
Unfortunately, and as much as we might like it to be the case, there is no miracle elixir for defined benefit schemes. Rather than hoping for magic, we’ve identified some tried and tested methods for making sure schemes run like well-oiled machine – mixed metaphors aside.
Studies have long shown that asset allocation is hugely important, typically accounting for the vast majority of the variation in portfolio returns over time. So focusing on asset allocation, alongside rigorous risk management and cost control within a strong governance framework, is what will drive improved outcomes for schemes. That in turn can create a more stable corporate balance sheet and improve benefit security for members. However, we often see significant time spent picking lots of different investment managers – either directly or via a fiduciary manager – who come with the promise of added value, despite there being no comprehensive evidence either way.
In this conversation, we discuss the key ways defined benefit schemes can improve their effectiveness.

02 Oct 2019 | 73: “It’s all about the service”: Keith Richards, Personal Finance Society CEO | 00:35:43
Advisers are no stranger to the PFS. With its royal charter to ‘secure and justify the confidence of the public’, this professional body is committed to helping its members develop their careers and maintain high standards through competence, integrity and care for the customer. Under the leadership of Keith Richards, the society has focused on three key pillars: (1) greater member engagement, (2) involvement in regulatory and public policymaking and (3) engaging the public to raise awareness about the high-quality service available.
In this week’s episode, I talk to Keith about how advisers can demonstrate real value for their clients, the booming market for advisers overseas and the demand for well-qualified professionals, and of course, costs and regulation. From the Pension Transfer Gold Standard to the amazing pro-bono community work its members can take part in, our conversation covers almost everything about what it means to be an adviser today and his prediction that we’ll still see some of the family names above advisory firms still there in 100 years’ time.

09 Oct 2019 | 74: DC: The power of data science | 00:13:57
Many pension schemes store a huge amount of member data. But this is often difficult to access, incomplete or inconsistent, and stored in multiple formats – PDFs, spreadsheets and others. Schemes struggle to analyse their data, develop sample user personas, and make predictions about future trends and behaviours, let alone support members in improving their pension choices to improve outcomes.
Our episode this week explores how schemes can put this wealth of data to use. Trustees need to be able to cut through the noise of unnecessary data and find the insights in their specific members’ behaviour. For instance, member communication might not only better show their future total pension pot but also how they compare with others in the demographic group – are you saving more or less than people in a similar position?
In an environment where trustees and scheme managers are time-poor, data-rich, and finding underlying information a struggle to organise, a one-stop-data-shop can provide a clearer picture of your scheme.

16 Oct 2019 | 75: ESG: Why divestment might hold some nasty surprises | 00:16:00
Many investors will still tell you that responsible investment approaches begin and end with negative screens – excluding whole sectors such as oil & gas from portfolios. This is entirely understandable: if an investor wants an ESG integrated portfolio, it seems strange to continue to hold oil stocks. But when you apply this to a market-cap index – such as the MSCI World with its whopping 5% energy weighting – exclusion means allocating more to the technology and finance sectors as a result, perhaps not necessarily the diversification you might have been looking for from an index.
It’s also important to think about what exclusions do to your factor exposure. Swapping energy for tech might have been great for returns these past five years, but on a factor basis that means you will be overweight growth and underweight value going into the next turn of the economic cycle.
In this conversation, we discuss the unintended consequences of exclusions and dive into the ways ESG analysis can be integrated into index products to give you a high ESG impact without a high tracking error.

23 Oct 2019 | 76: Fadi Zaher, author of “Index Fund Management, A Practical Guide to Smart Beta” | 00:24:56
What can Alex Ferguson’s career teach us about factor investing? In recent years, index and factor investing solutions have been bestsellers. But factor investing success is not a foregone conclusion, and there are plenty of quirks and misprints in the literature.
In his new book, Index Fund Management: A Practical Guide to Smart Beta, Factor Investing and Risk Premia, Fadi Zaher simplifies the world of factors and calls out both the factor fanatics and the smart beta sceptics. This conversation touches on the five equity factors that matter – value, quality, momentum, low volatility and size – and why factors are the nutrients in your portfolio meal, you have to have a balance!

Live from the Landmark Hotel! We recorded this episode while at our DB/DC Client Conference where the topic of dealing with retirement anxiety was such a major topic. So that’s why we’re absolutely delighted to be joined by Julie Richards Group Director of Pensions of Boots Walgreens Alliance.
The challenges of whether pension scheme members are prepared enough for retirement (“the cliff edge”) and, crucially for all of us in the industry, what we can do more to make sure they feel in control of their pension and what their retirement will look like.

06 Nov 2019 | 78: Thematic investing – Your questions answered | 00:25:40
In an episode earlier this year, Howie Li and John Roe discussed what separates long-term investment themes from fads. As Howie explains, the enduring themes are those that are changing the foundations of how we live and work – from disruptive technology to the energy revolution and demographic shifts.
Yet capturing these themes in an investment strategy is not easy, so in this episode Howie addresses some recurring questions we’ve received from listeners and clients. How do we avoid companies exploiting thematic buzzwords for their own marketing purposes rather than genuinely innovating? What is the difference between a thematic and a sector-based investment strategy? How can investors integrate themes into their portfolios? Is it possible to time exposure to themes?
Howie covers all these challenging topics and more in this conversation, while also sharing practical examples of how we can put the theory of thematic investing into practice.

12 Nov 2019 | 79: Managing millennials and intergenerational ways of working, with Dr Paul Redmond, University of Liverpool | 00:18:55
One the most engaging speakers at both LGIM’s Retail and DB/DC Client Conferences, Dr Paul Redmond is one of the foremost speakers on the subject of how different generations can work together most effectively. There has been so much written about millennials – what they want, what they don’t want, their expectations – that it can seem like this is really a generation that stands apart and sometimes in conflict with the others.
But according to Dr Redmond, this is far from the truth. While there are some characteristics unique to this generation, we all have a lot more in common than you might think. In this fascinating conversation, we discuss some of the innovative tips he has for managers – including ‘reverse mentoring’ – and the ways millennials can best learn from Generation X.

20 Nov 2019 | 80: Working on water: investment opportunities in solving the world’s water crisis | 00:21:42
The world is facing a water crisis. If that sounds alarmist, consider a few statistics. The global per capita water supply has fallen by 56% since 1962, with 57% of aquifers having passed the tipping point. By 2025, 1.8 billion people are expected to be living in regions with absolute water scarcity and two-thirds of the world’s population will be living under water-stress conditions.
Population growth is obviously a factor in this, but water shortages are also being aggravated by many other forces, from climate change to urbanisation. And even where there is plentiful water, it is becoming increasingly polluted. Cumulatively, this is forecast to lead to a deficit of at least 40% between the availability of and demand for fresh water in the next 10 years.
Yet, as Aanand Venkatramanan explains in this episode, we need not despair if we act now. Clean water is one of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, and should attract investment of up to $23 trillion over the next 10-20 years. Aanand describes some of the most promising technologies that will help us meet this challenge, and sets out the opportunities they create for investors.

Governance is at the heart of what The Pensions Regulator (TPR) does because good governance means good outcomes for members. With a wealth of new statutory guidance coming into force, especially in such areas as ESG, Anthony has been instrumental in delivering education and support to help trustees find their way through this new regulatory landscape.
Joining us at our DB/DC Client Investment Conference earlier this autumn, Anthony discussed the work of TPR, its key areas of focus including the “21st Century Trusteeship” project and, of course, how incorporating financially material ESG factors into investments can help better prepare schemes for the future and manage long-term risks.

04 Dec 2019 | 82: DB: Emerging market debt, the missing piece of the cashflow puzzle | 00:17:28
With over $15 trillion in negative yielding bonds in the market, a decade of loose monetary policy has left developed market yields languishing and investors on the hunt for sources of higher return. Enter emerging market debt. At a market size of over $12 trillion, this can no longer be considered a niche asset class.
Cashflow matching strategies are customised investment solutions, designed to enable clients such as pension schemes or insurance companies to meet their liabilities. In this episode, we discuss how emerging market fixed income has an important role to play in designing cashflow matching strategies.

11 Dec 2019 | 83: In Conversation With: Michelle Scrimgeour, CEO, LGIM | 00:17:18
In this special episode, Michelle Scrimgeour reflects on her career through asset management and her first five months as CEO of Legal & General Investment Management. From her time at Blackrock, M&G, Columbia Threadneedle and now LGIM, it’s clear that the City has not just become more international but also more inclusive “Culture is critical”, she says. “Joining LGIM was a different role again and I wanted to join somewhere with a strong culture and that I could quickly feel a part of in a natural way.”
Talking with Sarah Aitken, Head of Distribution, they discuss key megatrends that face asset managers from ESG, “no longer a nice-to-have”, to the shifting technological and regulatory landscapes. As she looks ahead, creating a resilient business comes down its purpose, “we’ve got to stay true to our core. The purpose of an organisation becomes hypercritical when the world is changing around you.”

17 Dec 2019 | 84: CIO Outlook 2020: The year of change | 00:25:45
This is an extraordinary moment for investors. Many asset classes have notched up double-digit returns over 2019, with equities hovering close to record highs even as trillions of dollars of bonds offer negative yields. But even though markets appear to underappreciate certain key risks, there are still reasons for investors to be cheerful.
In our final episode of the year, we talk to Sonja, CIO, and Emiel, Head of Asset Allocation, about why global growth may ultimately disappoint investors
even as recession fears abate, the many ways in which the US election could disrupt markets appear under-priced, and why a style rotation from growth to value could have a significant impact in 2020.

02 Jan 2020 | 85: In Conversation With: Hetal Mehta, Senior European Economist | 00:14:40
It’s not often that you have to read full state constitutions as part of your role. But Brexit and the European political upheaval of recent years have transformed Hetal’s day-to-day work as an economist. LGIM’s foremost speaker on Brexit and European politics and economics, she has appeared on the BBC, Bloomberg, CNBC and more to filter the investment signals from the political noise.
In this episode, Hetal talks about the reasons she loves economics (‘it’s maths, with more real-world results’), a path from investment banking to asset management, as well as her passion for cooking and her work as a qualified photographer.

15 Jan 2020 | 87: Why a strong audit committee is so important, with Sacha Sadan, Director of Corporate Governance | 00:18:02
Whether we believe it or not, trust in the system is broken. Recent audit scandals have prompted reform and yet further reform is expected.
Having a robust audit committee is a pivotal aspect of improving the effectiveness and accuracy of auditing, and restoring trust. The audit committee has responsibility for the assurance framework for both financial and non-financial published numbers. As ESG data becomes more and more important for investors, this is a critical role.
In this episode, we talk to Sacha about why having a strong and empowered audit committee is so important for a company’s investors and some of the best practices he and his team have seen throughout the years.

22 Jan 2020 | 88: Stepping stones to end-game: a DB-focused podcast with Lisa Purdy (Head of Fiduciary Distribution) and Pretty Sagoo (Head of Pricing and Execution) | 00:14:46
2018 was a record year for pension scheme bulk annuity transactions, with nearly £25bn of deals, and this trend will have continued into 2019 too. According to a survey by AoN Hewitt, the time for schemes to reach their end‐game target is currently less than ten years.
Every pension scheme is different, so even if schemes are targeting the same solution, they will need their own bespoke action plan to fit their own circumstances and move them on their journey towards end‐game. While there may be some uncertainties, there are practical steps that schemes can take to navigate the twists and turns more smoothly. In this episode, we talk to Pretty and Lisa about why end-game is so important for pension schemes at the moment, the state of the buyout market, and what schemes can to in order to prepare for a buyout. 29 Jan 2020 | 89: AI, robot: harnessing the investment potential of technological breakthroughs | 00:23:13
The opportunities being created by the wider adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics are immense. Spending on cognitive and AI systems is forecast to grow from $12 billion in 2017 to $78 billion in 2022, according to IDC, and McKinsey projects that AI technologies are likely to increase global economic output by $13 trillion, or 16%, by 2030.
For cutting-edge insight into these trends, we were joined for this podcast by Professor Wyatt Newman, one of the world’s foremost authorities on robotics who has worked on developing autonomous vehicles and humanoid robots for disaster response.
The challenge for investors is to translate these exciting developments into strategies aligned with the growth of the AI and robotics industries. To explore these topics, we also heard from experts at ROBO Global® about how to identify and invest in the companies pioneering these technologies.
· Professor Wyatt Newman, a leading researcher in the areas of mechatronics, robotics and computational intelligence
· Jeremie Capron, Director of Research at ROBO Global®
· Richard Lightbound, CEO - EMEA & Asia at ROBO Global®

05 Feb 2020 | 90: Real Assets: How flexible spaces are transforming the office sector | 00:32:01
What makes a ‘modern’ office space that genuinely suits occupiers’ needs? Is it a fully serviced environment, accompanied by all the technological bells and whistles available? Or perhaps it’s the more traditional but sparsely furnished option? Customer expectations today have highlighted the limitations of both services and traditional offices and the need for genuine intermediate solutions.
Joining LGIM Talks this week are guests from the Real Assets to talk about the flexible office market, designed for fast-growing SMEs and larger corporates. As a sector ripe for disruption, we discuss how simplified leasing processes, high quality spaces and of course the security of a trusted landlord can help businesses and deliver long-term investment returns.
· Andrew Mercer, Office Sector Lead
· Bill Page, Head of Real Estates Market Research

12 Feb 2020 | 91: Are robo-advisers disrupting the wealth management industry? We ask Chris Barrett from JM Finn | 00:20:51
It’s no secret that robo-advisers have opened up the industry. For years, wealth managers appeared as though they only catered for the those who, well, had a large amount of wealth to be managed.
But is the story of the technological upstart disrupting an age-old industry too reductive? And can robo-advice really provide the necessary guidance customers are looking for when so many have such nuanced circumstances?
We ask Chris Barrett, Investment Director at JM Finn, how his company has innovated their service offering and why there might actually be a place for both traditional advice and robo-advice in clients’ portfolios.

· Matthew Kemp, Senior Investment Sales Manager, LGIM

21 Feb 2020 | 92: Is the new Stewardship Code 2020 the greenwashing killer we’ve all been waiting for? | 00:27:10
So many of our conversations with investors about stewardship are about two key problems: how can we judge the impact of your actions and how can we compare your work with your competitors? When so many are claiming to have ESG in their DNA, the ambitious update to the Stewardship Code goes a long way to putting an end to greenwashing. With new expectations about how investment and stewardship are integrated across asset classes, tougher hurdles to become a signatory and publicly available reporting from 2021, investors can expect a lot more transparency and comparability in the future. This week, we’re exploring what it means for you in detail and why it will become a lot harder, and a lot more meaningful, for an asset manager to be a signatory of the new code.
· Jeannette Andrews, Senior Global ESG Manager, Investment Stewardship team
· Mark Chappel, Senior Content Manager, LGIM

26 Feb 2020 | 93: Why corporate culture matters | 00:24:54
Leadership, strategy and culture are all critical when assessing a company – whether for future investment or perhaps if you’re considering a role there. But the one that always stands out to employees’ lived experiences is culture and yet is still seen as so elusive given it is embedded in unspoken behaviours, social patterns and mind-sets. This makes it hard for boards and would-be investors to assess, manage and measure. Difficult, but not impossible.
This week, we talk to Clare Payn about her experience working with boards and fund managers about how she and the Investment Stewardship team understands corporate culture, the ways it can be measured, and how it can be successfully changed and developed over time.

05 Mar 2020 | 94: Living the dream? The Retirement Living Standards with Emma Douglas, Head of DC | 00:25:21
How much money do you really need in retirement? Amid large amounts of confusion in the UK workforce, the Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association (PLSA) might just have the answer. Inspired by the “five-a-day” mantra, the PLSA’s Policy Board have developed Retirement Living Standards as guidelines for how much retirees need to live off – and what they can realistically afford to buy – at three levels of income. These virtual “shopping baskets” include everything from your weekly grocery drop to how many holidays you need a year, and much more besides.
This week, we interrogate how and why the standards were developed, what happens for couples, taking the bus and whether you can still afford to have fun in retirement!
· Emma Douglas, Head of Defined Contribution, LGIM and Chair of the PLSA’s Policy Board
· George Currie, Policy Lead: Lifetime Savings, PLSA

11 Mar 2020 | 95: How to build a more robust portfolio | 00:19:36
When the direction of markets seems totally unknowable, constructing an investment strategy can sometimes feel like a battle.
Among other things, investors need to find a decent array of weapons, or investment opportunities; guard against attacks, or shield against unrewarded risks; and, as no plan survives contact with the enemy, adapt to changing market circumstances. This week we’re talking to the LGIM Solutions team which helps clients solve their investment problems and win these particular battles.
As Bruce Lee said, “Obey the principles without being bound by them.”
