14 Jun 2022 | Valleyheart - Heal My Head & More | 01:21:43
his conversation with Kevin Klein from Valleyheart is a great look at how a modern artist sees the landscape today, and in what ways some things always stay the same in the midst of constant change. The one trend that continues to grow is the amount of control artists have over more and more layers of their art form, and why having clear vision and identifying constraints seems to matter more than ever. Valleyheart has a brand new Tooth & Nail album called Heal My Head out now, and its a terrific listen. Chapter 23.2 Not only was Josh Moore focused on his goal of becoming a musician from a very early age, but he was also recognizably good as an early teenager who eventually was noticed by older kids at his school who picked him up and made him their lead singer. Finishing high school by an alternative program, Josh is touring as Beloved's frontman at 18 years old, and by 21 that journey would be over and Josh would move in a different direction musically and personally.

07 Jun 2023 | Jason Dunn of Hawk Nelson: Erased | 01:39:24
Jason Dunn started Hawk Nelson in 2000 with his pals northeast of Ontario where they were like thousands of other aspiring garage bands who just loved to make noise until a connection with Trevor McNevan towed them in to ride the wave of pop punk right into the height of Tooth & Nail's dominance. In the decade that followed they enjoyed great success, became a business with a full team and commercial momentum of their own until the commercial trends began to shift leaving Jason to feel an internal dissonance that he didn't know how to resolve...

Hangnail is an old school classic Tooth & Nail punk band and is back with new holiday music! It's their first new music in 17 years. This seemed like a good occasion to hang out with the whole band and look all the way back to the mid 90's as this group of best friends in high school, who never had a lineup change and were first generation Tooth & Nail kids just trying to play cover songs until they got their first big opportunity at Cornerstone '98.

Chapter 10 By the year 2000, EMI Records had been pursuing Tooth and Nail to buy half of the company and was already doing its distribution. New genres were emerging, Tooth and Nail was moving offices and the staff was beginning to undergo major changes as well. Solid State Records was gaining momentum with acts like Living Sacrifice and Zao as heavy music was becoming more widely accepted. Roy Culver, who worked for EMI was hired and moved to Seattle to be the first Solid State employee and its A&R. Roy explains what the time of transition was like from his view and recounts stories of Solid State's successes and difficulties.

SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: 07 Feb 2019 | Chapter 6: From Bremerton to the Wide World | 00:47:08
Chapter 6 MXPX has a special place in the history of Tooth and Nail Records. They were the first band to break well beyond the Christian punk hardcore scene and into the mainstream. In 1992, they were 10th graders in Bremerton, trying to play at house parties. By 1996, they were on MTV, KROQ, and part of the global pop punk culture. This was an incredibly rapid rise, full of new elements to navigate, not only for the band, but for Tooth and Nail, who now found themselves in a different world and at a totally new level, setting a new precedent for what was possible for an independent label.

Steve and Ben from Wolves At The Gate have been at this game for a long time, and their band is continually gaining momentum, skill, fans, press coverage & relationships. With the release of their 5th album, Eulogies, they are seeing the compounding rewards of those efforts. The band has been able to maintain a clear vision and knows exactly who they are. Their sound and approach to ministry have been unwavering, yet their music progresses. They remain DIY and hands-on in their organization. They seem to have made the transition from a new & upcoming Solid State band to what you would call a veteran, influential Solid State act. 24 May 2022 | The Ongoing Concept - Brothers In Arms | 01:28:21
The Ongoing Concept is one of the most DIY bands in the Tooth & Nail/Solid State catalog, and they have achieved many innovative things like building their own instruments from scratch. The journey they have been on has been shaped by those that came before, but is a long quest for the artist to have as much creative control as possible. That desire to control everything has disadvantages too and this all makes for a very interesting conversation with band leader Dawson Scholz. This episode is a look at what it means to have been a first generation Tooth and Nail Kid, aspiring to participate in the culture you loved.

29 Nov 2019 | Chapter 23: Beloved: One and Done | 01:01:00
Chapter 23.1 Beloved’s 2003 debut, "Failure On," is a legendary album in the Solid State Records catalog. They had so much in their favor: made a flawless debut record, had an incredibly promising trajectory, had all been friends since childhood, and described themselves as family, were respected in the scene that was exploding and supportive, and were a priority to the best record label in the Christian heavy music space in the middle of its most powerful moment. Dusty Redmond gives his point of view as to how after just a few tours, and amid the anticipation of the entire scene for their follow up record, the Beloved train was derailed. Since then, Beloved has existed in conversations in greenrooms, tour busses, and record industry people as a “what if” band. There were occasionally feint rumors of possible reunions, but alas, after nearly 15 years, most people have given up hope. You would think that it would take something extraordinary to stop the incredible momentum that Beloved had in 2004, but some things can be both powerful and fragile at the same time.

The environment that they created was both the incubator and launching pad for countless careers and also a wonderful place of development for its attendees, staff, and volunteers. The festival did in fact come to an end, but it by no means did it fail.

SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: 06 Sep 2019 | Chapter 17: Raw Rock Kills | 01:22:19
Chapter 17 Showbread is one of the bands that was able to follow in the footsteps of the bands who pioneered the music scene that we all love. There was a very special time when the market was not overcrowded with touring musical acts, but the scene was established enough that there was a great hunger for independent and expressive music. If you had a message, some talent, and were really willing to sacrifice, you could be a touring band. Even without a label or fans, you could get shows and win fans. And if you did that, perhaps a label would notice. It was a very open-minded and supportive time. If you were a Christian kid looking to have some artistic boundaries broken from your conformist upbringing and you like raw music, Showbread might just kill you.

31 Jul 2023 | Reese Roper - Five Iron Frenzy | 01:51:52
Reese Roper is simply a legend. Five Iron Frenzy (FIF) was one of the first Christian bands truly existing in both the Christian and mainstream space. In the late 90s during the ska explosion, they achieved real commercial success, made a bold choice to stay on a small independent label, and were delivering absolutely scorching lyrics that were full of questions and critique - lyrics that challenged the existing cultural structures. Packaging those lyrics in the ska-punk package was a perfect move that paid off deeply to their fan base. FIF is also one of those bands that pioneered and cultivated their followers into super fans by delivering on multiple layers of depth across time and staying true to their principles. They are heroes of the scene and certainly paved the way for the next generation. They are now releasing an incredibly cool vinyl box set of all their music. You gotta check it out and the promotional video for it. I’ll link it in the notes because it delivers the perfect amount of silliness and humor that you’d expect from FIF. I thought this would be a great chance to talk to Reese and get his reflections on some of the special things they have accomplished plus some of the challenges. 17 Nov 2021 | Aaron Sprinkle - The Creative Alpha in the Room | 01:32:19
Aaron Sprinkle and his brother Jesse began playing in the band Poor Old Lu 30 years ago in 1991. Poor Old Lu broke up in 1996, but Aaron was already well on his way to building an absolutely legendary career of influence on our scene. He’s been a guest on this pod before where we covered the early days of Tooth & Nail, but today we will cover his entire career as a producer. Aaron is also a top-tier songwriter and artist who has never spent any significant time touring and building his individual career. As such, he has been able to engage hands-on with many extremely talented artists over & over again for more than 20 years in a way that would never be possible by pursuing a single band full-time. It’s common for bands to report that he is really was an additional member creatively in that he composed, produced, recorded, sang on, played on, and in a variety of other ways shaped some of the most important music in our scene. After all this time, Aaron is now focusing more on his individual career and interacting with fans, something he has never really done until now. Chapter 13 We now continue to move into the 2000’s era of Tooth & Nail Records. Brandon has sold half of the company to EMI and has purchased and absorbed Takehold Records, which brought its founder Chad Johnson on staff. Heavy music was continuing to explode, but also, in keeping with the Tooth and Nail style, Brandon and the staff continued to try to break and include a very wide variety of artists, including a very happy and poppy rock outfit from San Luis Obispo, CA, called Watashi Wa. Fronted by yet another young man who grew up as a Tooth & Nail kid, Seth Roberts joins Labeled to help paint the picture of that time and the unique challenges they faced. The story is of one dream fulfilled, and of another only partially fulfilled.

JT Woodruff is one of the most intentional and efficient leaders and operators in the history of the scene. His band Hawthorne Heights has had absolutely huge ups and downs. The downs include a lengthy, costly lawsuit with their label as well as the death of a best friend and bandmate, Casey Calvert, in 2007. Hawthorne Heights has handled their career incredibly well, racking up over 20 years of successful continuous activity while continuing to innovate, adapt, and grow as people and as a band. They got signed to Tooth & Nail and headed straight to Seattle to record their debut album with Aaron Sprinkle. That record released in 2010 with a swan song follow-up album in 2012. Although their time in the scene was short, they left a real mark with genuine music that still connects with many people today

12 Jul 2019 | Chapter 14: Anberlin | 00:47:35
Chapter 14 Today we continue on our early 2000’s journey with the very important and pivotal Anberlin (Stephen Christian). I refer to Anberlin as pivotal, because they began as a pop punk band in the vein of late 90's Tooth & Nail, but made an image and musical pivot at just exactly the right time, along with a crop other emerging bands from the southeast, which in turn helped Tooth & Nail pivot and transition to a new era. Tooth & Nail has just acquired Takehold Records and its founder, Chad Johnson, to be head of A&R, and his connections began to pay off.

Chapter 15 Today's episode is intended to give you an inside and personal perspective on Tooth & Nail, Brandon Ebel, and the music scene as the label grew into its 2000’s dominance. Anneka Winters was an accountant at Tooth & Nail Records from 1998 to 2004, but she was much more than just an accountant. She assisted and worked with Jim Worthen and also became Brandon's Personal Assistant, she lived in a communal house with other Tooth & Nail employees, and she was around through the biggest staff and culture change in the company, driven in part by the merger with EMI, the shift in genres, and the success of BEC Records.

The Labeled Universe is expanding! In addition to this Stories, Rumors, and Legends feed, we’re introducing A new labeled podcast called Deep Dives! This introductory episode looks at coming off of “Erase Me”, the band was filled with conflict over sonic direction and personal issues. Underoath found themselves at a crossroads and were forced to dig deep and reflect on their history within the DIY punk & hardcore scene and the passion they felt at the inception of the band. With that focus, the band made the bold decision to not have any outside input from producers and set off on their own creative silo. Capital Lights came along in the peak of Tooth & Nail’s power and influence. Oddly, in this period there there are many bands who seemed to have everything going for them and were musically outstanding, yet their full potential was never realized. Bryson Phillips is a a truly gifted singer and songwriter that has been praised by both Brandon Ebel & Aaron Sprinkle over the years. I have had no personal experience with him though, so I really enjoyed getting to hear his perspective of the time he spent in the scene. I’m sure you will too! 21 Jan 2021 | Tooth & Nail All Purpose All Star: Randy Torres | 01:56:30
Lead singers tend to get and often deserve the most attention in most bands. They carry a large burden and the spotlight is not at all easy to manage, but some of the most talented and valuable people are not the ones in the limelight. Randy Torres has done it all in the Tooth & Nail world, and he has done it well. Guitarist for Project 86, engineer for Aaron Sprinkle, A&R for the label, touring musician for Anberlin, composer, sound designer and more. Coming from a supportive environment in SoCal at just the right time in the late 90's, Randy has been able to make a great career for himself and that career is marked mainly by how personable and likable and easy to work with he is. He has been a great inspiration of how to be for many people including me.

13 Dec 2018 | Chapter 3: The Stigma | 00:51:32
Chapter 3: By the mid 90’s, Tooth and Nail Records had moved from Southern California to Seattle, where they were confronted with a scene that was not exactly welcoming to Christian rock, but the influence of that scene would play a role in Brandon’s strategy to embrace and seek artists that could be credible in the mainstream world and place them alongside others that could have mass appeal in the Christian market. This episode explores the difficulty navigating being an artist while having to wrestle with Christianity, credibility, commerce, and the conflicting expectations of fans, parents, record labels, and the non-Christian bands that you think of as peers.

Hopesfall is a very influential post hardcore/spirit filled hardcore band. They emerged in the North Carolina scene and the greater Southeast with bands like Beloved, Stretch Armstrong, he is legend, Underoath and Luti-Kriss around 2000. they were a Furnacefest band and a Cornerstone band. They were signed to Takehold Records who was acquired by Tooth and Nail in 2003 but due to some changes in the bands lineup and other factors, Hopesfall rejected the opportunity to be on Solidstate at that time and was allowed to instead sign to Trustkill records. For Today is a particularly interesting band because they were one of the most outspoken Christian bands ever, but, instead of trying to carefully walk the line between Christian and secular, they just went hard musically AND lyrically. They were able to penetrate deeply into the secular market finding great success in many opportunities like Warped Tour. They were able to achieve longevity, earn a decent living and create brutal music that is still popular and relevant today. Mark Salomon is a legend and forefather of the Tooth & Nail scene. He was pioneering new artistic and cultural territory while being iconic, professional and a showman all at the same time. He has been massively influential from The Crucified and Stavesacre to Neon Horse and his podcast, Never Was, and his reputation for having solid personal relationships across decades with so many other legends. What a rock singer, a podcaster, and great relationships all have in common is the ability to connect & communicate ideas from your mind though your voice. Scott Mellinger joined the legendary band Zao to replace Brett Detar as a musician between the albums, When Blood and Fire Bring Rest and Liberate Te Ex Inferis. He immediately brought a new sonic element helping them arrive at their signature sound, but his influence didn't stop there. Despite being in a band with big personalities, Scott emerged as a leader and became the band's stabilizing point guard. Zao's streak of longevity was truly unexpected given their early years and the amount of environmental change that has occurred since the late ’90s, making them about as legendary as it gets in our world. Scott's a great thinker and I always feel it's a privilege to speak with him.

Chapter 18 This isn't a Norma Jean episode per se, because of Norma Jean’s legend and significance in the heavy music scene. SolidState and Tooth & Nail history is much too large to begin to cover in an episode, so we will cover it from a variety of angles over time. But as far as Norma Jean goes, Cory Brandan is certainly a very central figure, and his career in this scene intersects multiple important bands and he is one of the very few individuals that has been able to find a way to thrive (although sometimes merely survive) and contribute for 20 years. Cory has been able to find or create paths when it seemed that none existed. What's even more hard to imagine is that Cory stayed focused on creating music and found his way despite the fact that by 1994 at the age of 18 he had already had his first child. I talked to Cory about his journey and mindset beginning with his first band Eso Charis, his connection to Living Sacrifice, and how he eventually became the leader of the almighty Norma Jean.

16 Nov 2018 | Chapter 1: Permission Not Required | 00:57:45
Chapter 1: By the late 80s, a massive void had formed between secular and Christian culture, and the secular side seemed to have all the best music. But, something new was beginning to emerge from Southern California and the Pacific Northwest: a movement of Christian kids and leaders who not only embraced punk and DIY ethics, but saw it as consistent with their faith. They began to form a scene and a community of inspiring and credible music – but with no internet, there was little-to-no support or infrastructure. Clearly, there was not only proven demand from would-be consumers, but a clear vision from the artists involved. So they built what they needed, gained support from fans, and sparked a culture-shifting creative explosion leading to to the founding of Tooth & Nail Records and much more.

02 Nov 2021 | JB Brubaker of ABR, The Scene’s Biggest Export | 01:23:21
August Burns Red is a creation born of our scene, and by all accounts one of the most successful outputs of the whole culture. ABR has sold over a million records in North America alone, has 2 Grammy nominations, and has played over 2000 in shows in 45 countries while having no member changes in the last 18 years. It's astonishing to see what can come out of a very small group of people with shared interests that begin by goofing off together but made steady progress over many years refining their machine and discovering their purpose. The groundwork laid by first and second generation bands was dirty and often dangerous to navigate personally and professionally. ABR was just the right group of individuals that came at just the right time to avoid the common traps, failure modes and gatekeepers by always focusing on the task at hand and by taking our culture's values & aesthetics much farther & wider than any of us or them could have imagined. Huge props to Brent and the whole band, but on this episode I wanted to focus on JB. I’ve learned a lot from him and plan to continue to do so as ABR continues to innovate and deliver at an incredibly high level. Pre-order the new Silent Planet album Iridescent! 11 Aug 2021 | Terminal: A False Start | 01:51:31
Terminal can be described in many ways. One and Done, One Hit Wonder, Casualty of the industry, a career that seemed over before it began. Similar to Beloved in many ways, with a single album destined for an explosive followup the bands had seemingly failed before their future fanbase could materialize. The bands were able to achieve great things quickly, but weren’t equipped to handle being a touring band. Had they made it just a little further, big things were likely to happen. But instead the band stopped, the members grew up, grew as people, and learned how to be friends. A tragedy and celebration brought the band back and they've become an active again. So its very cool to be experiencing new beginning for Terminal.

Chapter 8 By the time the 90's were coming to a close, Tooth & Nail Records had accomplished some amazing things. They had sold millions of records and helped to create a movement and and establish a thriving music scene. In 1998 it seemed like Like the label was really on top and had it all figured out, but changes were brewing in the larger climate and music scene. The punk sound was at its pinnacle, but new sounds were emerging as well and the music industry and major labels were beginning to catch up with what the indies were doing and looking to get in on the action. This episode give us a chance to see from the view of a rival and competitor. Brad Most of Goatee Records explains what that time period felt like and Brandon reflects on his decisions making and thinking in that period.

The Showdown is a very special band who was able to break a lot of new ground and turn a lot of heads by taking what was going on in heavy music and amplifying it to extreme levels by adding new layers of performance that mixed art and crowd interaction with humor to create a symphony of chaos that played the audience like an instrument. Their front man David Bunton is a legend in the scene when it comes to stage persona. The Showdown blended metal with classic rock, and were a big part of the dirty southern heavy scene along with He Is Legend and Maylene and the Sons of Disaster.

Doug Van Pelt has been focused on our music scene well before it ever existed. He was drawn to heavy music and then Christian music since he was a kid in the 70's. It’s safe to say that he has witnessed the entire phenomenon. What’s more, he literally made it his business to pay attention and share it with others. Doug is very entrepreneurial and began his own publication, HM, in the 80's. Doug is a phenomenal writer and journalist, but not a music “critic” so much as an enthusiast. He is deeply analytical and a passionate fan. He sees special moments, people, groups, & stories and has spent his life trying to share the special experiences, meaning & beauty he finds in the heavy music & spiritual communities. Doug has observed and covered this movement expertly for the last 40 years. You can check out HM Magazine at https://hmmagazine.com/ Become a Labeled Member! 13 Apr 2022 | Lee Humerian -Tooth & Nail Kid in Ukraine | 01:36:24
Lee Humerian was the drummer for Phinehas for nearly a decade. He is a very classic stereotype of a Tooth & Nail kid who followed his passion for music, energy and mission for God. Lee was drawn from music into full-time missions landing him in Ukraine in 2014. He and his family have made a home and life there during the escalating conflict over the last few years. I felt this was a great opportunity to get the perspective of someone from our world on a world that seems so foreign and unimaginable to me. This conversation is both fascinating, powerful & heartbreaking, and I’m glad you introduce you to a special person like Lee. I hope you get as much from this episode as I did. https://www.josiahventure.com/people-and-places/ukraine/9673 SONG LIST Phineas-The Rider As Cities Burn - This is it, This is it Beloved - Failure on my Lips

02 May 2019 | Chapter 9: Plankeye: Chasing the Dream | 00:41:17
Chapter 9 Plankeye began as a raw, high energy power pop band in the 90's, but made their way into the polished Christian scene after touring with larger CCM acts. They became a commercial success, but appearances are not always what they seem. Guitarist Eric Balmer and others shed light on the complications and forces at play to make their breakout happen. This episode is an edited rebroadcast of one from before we began this series.

21 Oct 2020 | Slick Shoes: Are You Crazy? (Full Band) | 01:26:44
Slick Shoes is back and full of new life. It's not uncommon for bands to reunite these days, but it's often just to play through an old album or do a reunion tour. Occasionally, reuniting bands put out new music. Some times that music is good, but rarely does it capture the full original spirit or energy of the band's former youthful self, but in this case, Slick Shoes has in fact done that. It has been 17 years since their last album, and the new music is killer. 2003 was pretty much the year that the Tooth & Nail scene had fully completed its generational change from punk and pop punk to the rising emo and screamo. This conversation with the full band really helps to paint the picture of that transition. We also cover the band's formation, personalities, and musical approach.
SONGS YOU HEARD ON THIS EPISODE: 13 Oct 2023 | Chris Conley - Saves The Day | 01:30:19
Chris Conley is nothing if not original. His ability and willingness to listen to and follow an inner voice led him to an early arrival into the all-ages music scene with great influence. Saves The Day continued to evolve musically and did not get stuck in a certain sound even though commercial success would have wanted just that. After helping set the tone for the scene and being signed to a major label (Dreamworks), Saves The Day delivered their album, In Reverie, which was another evolution of direction & departure from what the radio or even their fans were expecting. This lead to them being quickly abandoned by the label. Nonetheless, it’s Chris’ and my favorite album of theirs. We discuss this and much more including some close ties to my band, so please enjoy this conversation with Chris Conley.

10 Jan 2019 | Chapter 4: The Rise of Cornerstone | 00:47:56
Chapter 4 As it turns out, Cornerstone Festival had a lot more than a good lineup of bands; it has its own rich history and undergirding philosophy born out of The Jesus People USA and John Herrin, the festival’s director. Much of this philosophy and the festival’s audience was a direct inspiration to Tooth and Nail Records. Brandon Ebel traveled there in 1990 with a backpack and left with the clear notion that there needed to be more of what was going on at Cornerstone.

01 Dec 2021 | The Fire Itself: Sean of Phinehas & the Gamer Generation | 01:20:59
It used to be that you could tell the reaction to an album by things like first week sales or reviews in major publications, but in 2021 it's a lot different. You can still feel the energy around an important release like this one, but the buzz comes from places like “reaction videos” from prominent YouTubers and other new media. It's a little bit of a different landscape, but there is still just an air about some records that indicates something special, some type of credibility, and The Fire Itself definitely seems to be one of those records. Sean from Phinehas has a sharp and unique mind that comes from what could be called the gamer generation or a millennial, but he shares qualities with emerging and younger generations in a way that is relevant to his approach to art, creativity, and engineering. Sean & I talk about his background and how he was and still is a gamer and how that has helped him with networking & forming relationships. We also talk about how music has evolved and how people consume it evolved, especially around the time of MySpace and digital music. Of course, we extensively discuss The Fire Itself album that is getting a tremendous amount of attention, the song-writing process and how Sean’s list-writing becomes songs. Fit For a King is one of the most successful bands in the modern era of Solid State Records since their signing in 2012. They have worked incredibly hard to build the band’s following in both the physical & digital realms. They come from a long history of shared values & sounds with other Solid State bands and have integrated well into the larger metalcore scene. They continue to build a presence in the even wider space of metal in the digital space. Ryan Kirby is the lead vocalist, lyric writer and co-manager of the band, and I think you will find this conversation to an illuminating perspective into his mindset and why it all works so well
21 Sep 2021 | Matt Pryor of The Get Up Kids: Pioneer in a Parallel Universe | 01:14:53
In 1995, The Get Up Kids began exploring their surroundings and expanding their horizons in much the way that early Tooth & Nail and Solid State artists did. In the midwest emo scene, they were sharing the stages with bands of seemingly all genres, while making friends in many other states. They didn’t ask permission for what they did, and no one stopped them from blazing new pathways that would connect the regional underground scenes together and really open up the all-ages movement. Matt Pryor, TGUK frontman, currently hosts a Vagrant Records podcast series celebrating 25 years of Vagrant releases. This conversation with Matt gives us a great opportunity to look at the Christian piece of the all-ages scene through the eyes of a personality similar to many on this show, but also with an outsider’s perspective. 02 Dec 2022 | Josh Porter - The Fear Of God | 01:36:09
Josh Porter is one of the most interesting frontmen from our scene and is of a particular type whose spirit of rebellion resonates across many mediums, one of which being Showbread’s music. Their legendary set at Furnace Fest last year seemed to be a testament to how deeply connected their fans were. This podcast spends a lot of time analyzing the musical, relational and professional choices that bands make. We are often asked why we don’t get into people’s faith more on the podcast, given that it’s such a central theme. Certain people just have a more inherent energy toward the spiritual things, and Josh Porter is one of those people. In this case, he has a new book called Death To Deconstruction, and it seemed like an ideal opportunity to give more perspective into how Josh’s mind works.
23 May 2023 | Brandon Ebel- Zoom In/Zoom Out | 01:10:28
The mind of Brandon Ebel is quite a unique thing. He has an ability to rapidly shift his perspectives to analyze things at multiple levels, and has a strong bias toward action and a incredible eye for talent of all kinds. He seems to be all over the place but a better description might be that he has a laser focus and intensity that is consistent on a different horizon that perhaps only he understands. His special abilities to adapt and find consistency in extremely dynamic environments like the music industry have had a profound influence on many people over many years and seems very likely to continue.

Welcome back to labeled, the stories rumors and legends of tooth and nail records, I’m your host Matt carter and today’s episode features the not only legendary but iconic drummer Steve Kleisath from Strong arm, Shai Halud, further seeems forever, and the darling fire. He is a legend because he had tremendous influence on records that were tremendously influential and his style inspired many. He is iconic because he comes in a package that’s different than you might expect. He plays left handed on a reverse setup drum kit and plays quirky parts that seem to come from another dimension. This on top of the fact that Steve has become an a expert at many things including poker and holding world record video game scores. He clearly has a special mind that accesses information and makes decisions in a uniqe way that has had a big impact. I’ve never spoken to Steve and was very happy to have the opportunity to explore his mind a bit and I think you will enjoy that too. 15 Jan 2020 | Chapter 24: Underoath - Kids From Florida | 01:09:08
Chapter 24 There is no question that Underoath is the biggest Christian heavy band of our scene. They completely broke the ceiling of what was assumed was possible beyond our scene, but what are all the factors that go into a landmark success story like that of Underoath? In a sense, this podcast so far is a list and account of many of those factors, or maybe it's just "They’re Only Chasing Safety" was directly born out of the Tooth & Nail culture. It was a perfect wave that had been built by thousands of people collaborating and supporting one another and as they grew and gained momentum, the wave was ready to break, and Underaoth was the perfect band to harness its energy and break our scene wide open into the mainstream and become Tooth & Nail's biggest rock band to date. My favorite viewpoint for this story is that of Tim McTague's, who at that time was something like Underoath's quarterback. Not only is he a giant of an artist and musician, but at age 21, he took the responsibility to handle their business. As we have seen in this series, the biggest pitfalls are often managing the managers, agents, labels, lawyers, promoters, pressure from other bands, and fans, all of whom desperately want something from the band, and in Underoath's case, turn the intensity of all that up about 10x, starting with the release of "They're Only Chasing Safety."

02 May 2023 | The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus - Beer Bongs & Jesus | 01:29:10
The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus hit the national stage right in the pocket of time where the mainstream was taking notice of what our scene was up to. This was partially due to the unique character of Ronnie Winter, who was able to break in and ride that wave and create opportunity for himself in a way that maybe only he could. Their debut album “Don’t You Fake It” released in the summer of 2006 on Virgin Records and was certified gold by November of that same year. That meteoric rise brought along with it all that you could imagine of both positive and negative experiences. In this conversation, Ronnie does a great job of both seeing all the forces at play and owning his own part in it all. Today we have a convo with Chad Gardner of Kings Kaleidoscope. What's most intriguing about Chad is that he is an incredibly efficient, high-level, high-energy problem solver. He fits a pattern that we see over and over again in this world of kids who come from families with engineering and technical talent and use this to power high level creativity and art. chad's ability to lead creative teams and react and improvise is what leads to the aesthetic and musical excellence that Kings Kaleidoscope is known for. They are also known for having a rebellious spirit from within the Christian music and worship worlds, pushing boundaries, and an extremely DIY approach to everything. They have a new self-titled album out today, go listen on Spotify, and also a full US tour starting this week, go to https://kampkaleidoscope.com/ to find your city and get tickets. Ivoryline is one of those bands that accomplished a lot in a short time but due to the circumstances of reality did not have a career that was able to reach its full maturity. Their fairly short run gives us all that feeling of slight tragedy but also leaves us with a nostalgic feeling of what might have been or still could be. Ivoryline did 2 amazing records with Aaron Sprinkle, had rock radio hits, got on some great tours around the world, and just as quickly lost momentum as the scene, economy, and people's tastes began to change. 02 Mar 2022 | HTD Part I- Jimmy Ryan Building and Moving On | 01:23:35
Jimmy Ryan, the original lead singer of Haste The Day, is in a rare category. His band was a breakout hit in the pinnacle of the Tooth & Nail/Solid State golden age, but Jimmy was NOT a Tooth & Nail kid. The rest of his band certainly were as they were youth group kids from a nice Indianapolis suburb when they joined forces with Jimmy. He was considerably older than them and, for better or worse, became the "tour dad.” Jimmy may not have grown up as a Tooth & Nail kid, but he was a perfect fit to continue the tradition of Solid State bands who would bring the intensity to the mission of mosh and ministry; he even ended up working at the label for a season! 19 Oct 2021 | Josh Kemble - The Dogwood Way | 01:25:22
Josh Kemble is someone who instantly strikes me as having two of my favorite qualities, mindfulness and authenticity. Combined, they give the experience of being present in a conversation while able to tie in multiple layers of meaning. It's almost as if Josh is aware of the experience he is creating in others, and that's key in crafting music or art that is going to connect with people. From the stories I've heard over the year and the way they are discussed, and from a few conversations I've had with Josh, it's obvious that Dogwood was a very self- aware and principled band whose micro-culture navigated the emergence of the San Diego pop punk scene of the late 90’s, and then was able to become part of the canon of important artists in our scene.
