ABOUT THE EPISODE:

As businesses around the world struggle to survive during these turbulent times, many have had to make difficult decisions and pivot their operations to stay afloat. Kevin Watson, the chief operating officer of the First Equity Group and a director of SATIB, the tourism insurance brokers, has faced his own challenges during the pandemic.

According to Kevin, the biggest challenge for SATIB has been to manage their financial side of the business, while also trying to insure the properties their clients own. Kevin advises that businesses should always put their staff first, as this is the key to getting referrals and creating a good customer experience. He also emphasizes the importance of being unique and engaging in order to grab people's attention.

In order to succeed, Kevin suggests that entrepreneurs should get their thinking work done before 09:00 in the morning and use tools such as Asana and Power BI to become more productive. Furthermore, having a mentor to guide you through the business world can be hugely beneficial.

Finally, Kevin believes that motivation and a never give up spirit are essential for success. “Remember,” he says, “you need to show your superiors that you are willing to learn and grow if you want to advance your career.”

As businesses continue to adjust to the new normal, understanding the importance of staff, customers, motivation, and technology is essential for survival. With the right mind-set, businesses can come out of this pandemic stronger than ever.

If you’re looking for motivation and a never give up spirit, this episode is for you. People interested in SATIB Insurance Brokers can find more information on their website, www.satib.co.za.

18 Jan 2023A Conversation with Craig Drysdale00:37:27

Craig Drysdale, director of Sales and Marketing at ITT Inspirations Travel and Tours, has been in the tourism industry for nearly 30 years and has seen the unique camaraderie and support the industry provides. Through his experience, Craig has also become a mentor to many in the industry and is an advocate for the spirit of collaboration.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Craig’s experience was invaluable. He was able to help ITT relaunch and rebrand their logo and website, as well as adopt a hybrid solution of working from home and the office. Studies have shown that productivity and happiness increase by 30-40% with such an approach, and job descriptions are now including whether the job is remote, hybrid, or office-based. Craig has also embraced the concept of “less is more”, with businesses taking up less office space and reducing paper usage. He has found that his most productive time for emails is between 5 and 7 in the morning, and he still uses a “to do list” written on paper or in a book to remind him of his call to actions.

Domestic tourism was a saviour during the pandemic, and Craig has been involved in the National Department of Tourism’s tour operator incubation program, which has helped 44 SMEs survive the pandemic. The program has focused on compliance and business operations, as well as access to market linkages, mentorships and payrolls.

Craig believes that South Africa needs to reinvent itself and focus on new tourism products, true experiential experiences, and supporting small entrepreneurs in order to change its negative perception. He believes that the time for talking is over, and that obstacles to tourism must be tackled from the top down if South Africa is to hit its 2030 tourist numbers. Through his own experience and the camaraderie of the industry, Craig is advocating for the spirit of collaboration, support, and action to help South Africa’s tourism sector recover and thrive.

Craig can be reached on craig@itt.co.za, and the website for ITT is www.itt.co.za.

Don’t miss this episode with an industry insider who is advocating for collaboration, spirit, and action for the new era of South African tourism.

01 Feb 2023A Conversation with Martina Barth00:54:44

Martina Barth, Group Sales Manager of the Liz McGrath Collection, and Graeme Watson explore the world of hospitality and tourism discussing the impressive collection of five-star, boutique hotels in the Western Cape that Martina represents. From the ways in which the pandemic has impacted the industry, to the importance of providing a safe and welcoming space for LGBTQ+ travellers, this podcast dives into the nuances of global hospitality and the importance of being inclusive and understanding different cultures. Whether you're an industry insider or just looking to get a better understanding of the hospitality industry, this podcast is sure to provide you with an enlightening and informative listening experience.

Martina noted that Constantia is the oldest wine region in the Southern Hemisphere and urged people to visit the properties in the area. The hospitality industry should strive to be hospitable to everyone, regardless of their background, and it is important to ensure that marketing material is inclusive and represents all communities. The IGLTA, which is a leading network of LGBTQ+ tourism businesses, works to create safe and welcoming spaces for the LGBTQ+ tourism community to travel worldwide. To further this goal, the IGLTA has launched a new division called IGLTA Accredited, which will start off with hotels and provide an IGLTA Accredited stamp to those who have gone through a vetted system.

The pandemic has caused many changes in the tourism industry, such as the realisation that people can accomplish just as much work without having to travel and the importance of taking time for oneself and for loved ones. The pandemic has also taught the importance of being flexible with policies, having a two-way dialogue, and embracing virtual communication. In addition, the IGLTA is working to increase its presence in African countries even though some have laws against LGBTQ+ rights, and is hosting its biggest convention ever in October in Puerto Rico.

Finally, Martina encouraged businesses to work with young entrepreneurs to help them get into the tourism industry. One of the key takeaways from the conversation between Martina Barth and Graeme Watson highlighted the importance of being inclusive and understanding different cultures, which is essential for the growth of the tourism industry.

Martina can be reached on martina@collectionmcgrath.com.

02 Feb 2023A Conversation with Chantal Potgieter01:08:44

Chantal Potgieter, the founder of Themba Travel, a UK-based travel company specialising in South African-inspired journeys, has been working hard to bring attention to the people and stories of South African communities. With the support of the Women in Tourism Cape Town chapter and Travel Network Group, Chantal has been able to help her partners in South Africa and to empower women in the tourism industry.

Chantal’s passion for travel was sparked by her father who took her on trips to Oudsthoorn, every year. Journeys such as these and the sights and sounds she witnessed along the way, inspired Chantal to create a company that focuses on community-based tourism, volunteering holidays, and offering travellers the opportunity to experience authentic local living.

Chantal believes that the local people should be given the opportunity to tell their stories, and that South African tourism products are often inaccessible to South Africans due to their high prices. In order to make these experiences more accessible, one of the projects Chantal is working on is with a local guide from the Hammanskraal community to bring locals into the reserve to expose them to the beauty of conservation and the potential of becoming a ranger or guide.

Chantal is also passionate about connecting the indigenous people of South Africa with travellers and educating students in culture, community, and wildlife conservation. For young businesses looking to start up, Chantal recommends joining a network of people to get support and advice and taking advantage of all available resources.

Chantal’s story proves that with determination and resilience, you can make a real difference in the world of tourism.

Listeners are encouraged to tune in to Kusa Cast, subscribe, and leave a rating, as future episodes will dive into the latest trends and insights from the industry.

You can get hold of Chantal by logging on www.thembatravel.com or emailing her at chantal@thembatravel.com.

15 Feb 2023A Conversation with Martin Hawke00:30:55

Senior Director of Partner Success at Holibob, Martin Hawke, shares his journey in the tourism industry and offers his insights on the challenges and opportunities in the attractions sector. Martin dives deep into the logistics of the industry, discussing the importance of technology, innovation and platform consolidation. He also provides advice on how to make your product stand out and make the most of direct bookings. If you're looking for an insider's perspective on the tours and activities business, this is the podcast for you.

Holibob, a company that has been around for four years, is focused on being the e-commerce engine for the tours and activities sector in the travel space, and it has achieved success as a fully remote company, with employees in 14 different countries, and a focus on camaraderie with regular meetups in an office space.

Martin and the team have identified some of the biggest challenges in the attractions field as the adoption of technology. Many operators and attractions have difficulty getting their products out into the world and distributed. This is why Martin is exploring tools that can consolidate multiple platforms into one platform, to stay on top of communication. Technology is also being used to enable wider distribution of attractions and activities.

Logistical challenges also exist in the attraction world, such as finding guides and vehicles. The need for innovation and change has been highlighted since the onset of the pandemic, and Martin believes that there is now a driving force that will help the tours and activities and attractions space to really explode.

Martin believes that having an open mind and embracing new ideas and technology is key to success. Holibob helps operators build their digital strategy, increase direct bookings, and get their product in front of the right consumers without spending a lot of money. Operators interested in working with Holibob can go to the website and fill out a form. Log onto holibob.tech for more information.

08 Feb 2023A Conversation with Sam Chatham00:52:14

Sam Chatham, the founder of Somewhere SOUTH, is a very experienced professional in the tourism industry. She began her career as an apprentice hairdresser, and then ended up taking a job as a chambermaid in a hotel. From there, she worked her way up in the food and beverage department, front of house, and other departments of the 128 bedroom, four star hotel in Jersey.

However, the most surprising move that Sam made was to South Africa in 1994. She worked in the Peninsula Hotel in Sea Point and the Winchester Mansions Hotel and thereafter founded Somewhere South, a marketing and representation company based in Cape Town. In addition, Sam and her business partner recently combined their different skill sets to start a social media business.

Sam and Graeme discuss how the tourism industry has been resilient during the pandemic, and has taught people to appreciate more. It is important to remember that everyone is still in recovery mode, and to help each other out. This industry is a collaborative one, where colleagues often become best friends.

Sam notes that people should do what they love and love what they do, and should never forget the pandemic and the lessons it has taught them. They should empower themselves by learning new skills and knowledge. Networking is also important, as casual conversations can lead to potential revenue. People should embrace every opportunity to rise up after the pandemic and should have the drive to keep going. Sam believes that passion is very important as well as your skillset.

By tuning in to Kusa Cast, people can explore the world of tourism with leaders from all corners of the globe. It is an opportunity to learn more about the industry, and to find out how to help the tourism industry recover. Andrew suggests taking a gap year after finishing studies and traveling, as it is a great way to get into the tourism industry. Andrew loves South Africa and highlights the importance of remembering how first world the cities are, how easy it is to get around, and the world-class product available. South Africans are known for their hospitality and willingness to help strangers, which enhances the experience for international guests.

When asked about the changes needed in the industry, Andrew said that networking and staying connected with colleagues and external stakeholders is key to success in the tourism industry.

08 Mar 2023A Conversation with Julie Cheetham00:42:29

Julie Cheetham, managing director and founding member of sustainability software platform Weeva, discusses how businesses in the tourism industry can become more sustainable. From understanding the importance of resourcing to learning tips on how to manage time efficiently, this podcast delves into the practical application of sustainability in the tourism industry. Listeners will also gain insights on government regulations, consumer behaviour, and how to implement sustainable practices.

Weeva was created in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic as a way to help the troubled tourism industry. Julie believes that sustainability needs to become a conversation among the mainstream, not just the super luxury lodges.

Weeva uses a balanced scorecard approach to sustainability which includes four main areas: commerce, conservation, community, and culture. These areas are further broken down into 18 measurable areas of impact, such as waste, energy, water, biodiversity, embodied carbon, customer satisfaction, supply chain analytics, and Weevanomics. Julie also emphasises the importance of resourcing for businesses in becoming more sustainable, as they often don’t have the money or time to dedicate to it.

Julie has adopted sustainable practices in her personal life, such as not buying clothing for six months of the year and eating less meat. She also suggests time blocking as an effective way to manage time. She recommends that those in the tourism industry act with utmost integrity and avoid exploitative or extractive practices.

The pandemic has taught Julie that she is more resilient than she thought and that it is important to make quick decisions. She also believes that governments are becoming more involved in the tourism industry, requiring reporting on energy usage, carbon footprint, and waste. Consumers are also now willing to pay more for environmentally and ethically sustainable products.

Julie is passionate about sharing the practical application of sustainability with others and emphasises that sustainability practitioners, lodge managers, head of housekeeping, and maintenance managers have a unique perspective on the topic. She encourages everyone to ‘enjoy the ride’ and embrace the life-affirming industry.

Finally, she highlights Weeva.earth, where hoteliers and property owners can start a 21-day trial of the Weeva platform. Once onboarded, they can create a profile and track their impact across 360 degrees of their business.

Tune in to get a unique perspective on how to navigate the industry with sustainability in mind!

15 Mar 2023A Conversation with Cindy Muller00:54:30

Cindy Muller, owner of South Africa's GOLD Restaurant, shares her experiences of running a restaurant during the COVID-19 pandemic. Cindy's determination to prioritise safety, care for her staff, and maintain the authenticity of her business offer valuable insights into the challenges faced by the restaurant industry. Cindy's story is inspiring and serves as a reminder of the resilience and adaptability required to survive and thrive during difficult times.

GOLD Restaurant, which offers an interactive entertainment and culinary experience featuring dishes from various African countries, faced numerous challenges during the pandemic. With limited capacity and the emergence of the Omicron variant in November 2021, Cindy had to make tough decisions about when and how to reopen her restaurant. However, she was determined to prioritise the safety of her staff and guests, implementing strict protocols to ensure everyone was protected.

Cindy also spoke about the importance of taking care of her staff during this difficult time, prioritising their needs above all else. She believes that businesses will be remembered for how they treated their staff during the pandemic, and hopes that the industry will move towards treating waitering as a profession rather than just a stop-gap job.

Despite the challenges she faced, Cindy remained committed to her business and her staff. She divided her staff into three teams to work on a rotating schedule, even though the restaurant was not making much money. She also made the decision to reopen her restaurant despite restrictions on serving alcohol and limited capacity, in order to provide employment for her staff.

Looking to the future, Cindy plans to keep some of the protocols implemented during the pandemic, such as daily sanitisation and inclusive decision-making, going forward. Cindy's experiences offer valuable insights into the challenges faced by the restaurant industry during the pandemic, and the importance of putting people first. As the industry looks towards the future, it will be critical to prioritise the safety and wellbeing of staff and guests, and to treat waitering as a profession worthy of respect and fair compensation.

22 Mar 2023A Conversation with Quintin Smith00:51:50

Quintin Smith, managing partner of Cape Adventure Brands, shares insights into the surge of adventure tourism in South Africa post-pandemic. He discusses the company's commitment to inclusion and accessibility, highlighting the popularity of e-biking as an activity that accommodates guests of varying abilities. Quintin also emphasises the importance of the tour guide or leader in the adventure travel industry, even as automation and new technologies are adopted. With a focus on sustainability and collaboration within the industry, this podcast offers a fascinating look at the future of adventure tourism in South Africa.

Adventure tourism in South Africa has seen a surge in demand post-pandemic, with Cape Adventure Brands reporting a 10-15% increase in month-on-month comparisons. The company offers outdoor and adventure-based travel experiences, including kayaking, biking, and wine tours, and recently acquired iRide Africa, which caters to experienced cyclists. Quintin attributes the increase to pent-up demand and the return to regular booking patterns.

Cape Adventure Brands offers a variety of tours, with no age restrictions and accommodations made for all fitness levels. E-bikes, which provide assistance while pedalling, have revolutionised cycling, making it accessible to anyone who knows how to cycle. Quintin notes that e-biking has become a popular choice for tours, as it is an inclusionary activity that can accommodate guests of varying abilities.

The company places high value on the tour guide or leader, recognising that their skill and personality can make or break the success of a tour. Quintin emphasises the importance of human capital in the adventure travel industry, even as automation and new technologies are adopted. The booking process is 80% automated, but there is always a human touch at the end of the line for customer service.

Despite the challenges presented by the pandemic, Cape Adventure Brands has remained optimistic about the future and has received bookings as far out as 2024. The company plans to launch a walking and hiking brand in the near future, which will complement its existing products and infrastructure. However, the industry as a whole has faced logistical challenges, particularly with products that have moving parts. The supply chain for cycling equipment has been affected, with some wholesalers waiting up to nine months to receive components and spare parts.

Sustainability is a major focus in the adventure tourism industry, and there is a need for self-charging batteries in the e-bike world. Quintin notes that the adoption of new technology may be slower in South Africa due to the smaller volume of travellers compared to the US and Europe. However, he believes that there is untapped potential for adventure tourism in the area and that the negative media coverage of South Africa needs to change. He emphasises the need for collaboration within the industry to promote the country's positive aspects.

02 Apr 2023A Conversation with Andre du Toit00:34:41

We hear from Andre du Toit, a consultant to tourism players across Africa, about his two exciting projects that aim to provide peace of mind to travellers and minimise liability risk. He discusses the SECURA traveller app, which aggregates emergency response services for security or medical incidents and the inbound travel insurance that includes access to Africa's leading critical incident management service.

Andre also talks about the importance of resilience and collaboration in the tourism industry, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. This podcast is a must-listen for anyone interested in the future of African tourism and how technology can play a vital role in enhancing guest safety.

Andre is also working on an inbound travel insurance owned by South African tour operators that includes a buy-up option for cancellation for any reason. The product includes access to Africa's leading critical incident management service, which sets it apart from other travel insurance products. While there is currently no product that insures against a pandemic from an operator's perspective, travel insurance products that include cancellation for any reason are becoming more requested by travellers. Andre acknowledges the challenge of marketing and selling products that address safety and security concerns in Africa. Still, he believes in being honest with travellers and providing them with peace of mind through services like the SATSA supported SECURA traveler app.

The COVID-19 pandemic has taught the tourism industry the importance of resilience and the need to surround oneself with credible and trustworthy partners. It has also brought the industry together and forced it to take a step back to push forward with lasting changes in the future. People have realised how much their health, well-being, and mental health depend on travel, and tourism is here to stay and will be bigger and stronger than ever.

Tourism relies on partnerships and collaboration, and newcomers should build relationships and collaborate with individuals who have integrity and sustainability in mind. African governments need to understand the critical point of preserving wilderness landscapes across Africa, securing wilderness landscapes that work with communities to create healthy wildlife economies, and integrating wilderness safaris or other models to ensure biodiversity is at the centre of sustainable and regenerative practices around wilderness areas.

26 Apr 2023A Conversation with Cathy Entwistle and Nick Fox00:27:10

The tourism industry in South Africa has been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, with limited help assistance to support struggling businesses. Despite the challenges, there is still a strong desire for travel to South Africa, particularly for wine tourism and safaris.

In a recent episode of the Kusa Cast, "A Conversation with Cathy Entwistle and Nick Fox," the challenges facing the tourism industry in South Africa were discussed, along with potential solutions to revive the industry.

Cathy Entwistle, owner of Val du Charron Wine and Leisure estate in Wellington, shared her experience of buying a wine farm and expanding to four and five-star accommodation with plans to add more family rooms. Nick Fox, who owns Sibuya Game Reserve highlighted the importance of resilience and adaptability in the face of unexpected challenges.

To revive the tourism industry, the government needs to prioritise tourism and work with banks to provide financing for businesses in the industry. The revival of South African Airways (SAA) is seen as crucial for the tourism industry, as it would help bring more flights into the country and promote the national flag.

Starting a tourism or winemaking business in South Africa is challenging and requires significant investment and infrastructure, but it is important for job creation and the growth of the economy. The advice given is to have a dream, believe in oneself, and seek mentorship from experienced individuals in the industry.

Despite the challenges, there is still a strong desire for travel to South Africa. t is important for the government and banks to provide support to struggling businesses in the tourism industry to help revive the economy and create jobs. The potential for tourism to drive economic growth and job creation is significant, and it is vital that the government and industry work together to overcome the challenges faced by the industry.

05 Apr 2023A Conversation with Ross Kennedy00:52:11

Ross Kennedy, CEO of Africa Albida Tourism, discusses the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the Victoria Falls region's tourism industry. Kennedy shares the tough business decisions that were necessary for survival, but also highlights the community outreach programs and focus on sustainable and eco-friendly tourism practices that emerged during this difficult time. With a commitment to its long-standing employees and a vision for a more cooperative and efficient border system, this conversation is a must-listen for anyone interested in the future of tourism in southern Africa.

The Victoria Falls region in southern Africa has been a central hub for tourism for over 50 years, with the flagship Victoria Falls Safari Lodge and The Boma - Dinner & Drum Show being just a few of the many offerings provided by Africa Albida Tourism. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has forced the tourism industry to re-evaluate its priorities and adapt to the new normal.

In a recent episode of Kusa Cast, "A Conversation with Ross Kennedy", the CEO of Africa Albida Tourism discussed the impact of the pandemic on the region's tourism industry. He noted that tough business decisions, such as cost-cutting measures and putting the estate into a care and security status, were necessary to survive. However, the community came together to provide outreach programs, feeding programs, and care for children.

The pandemic also brought about a new focus on sustainable and eco-friendly tourism, with the industry implementing measures to make borders more user-friendly and efficient. Ross emphasised the importance of getting bureaucracy right and making borders quick, efficient, and clean ports of entry. The goal is to create a culture of cooperation with competitors and make the region a desirable destination for visitors.

The Victoria Falls region is made up of four countries: Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana, and Namibia, and is part of the KAZA Transfrontier Conservation Area. Ross believes that the lasting difference from the pandemic will be a focus on sustainable and eco-friendly tourism, as well as community outreach and training programs.

Africa Albida Tourism has a strong commitment to its employees, with many team members having been with the company for 20-30 years. They recently held a long service award ceremony, with three people receiving their 30-year awards and six receiving their 25-year awards. During the pandemic, businesses in the region were judged on how they treated their staff, and history will likely continue to judge them based on this.

Kennedy believes that the pandemic has taught important lessons that will continue to shape the future of the tourism industry in the region. Cost-cutting, efficiencies, and productivity will be critical in the post-pandemic world, but so will sustainable and eco-friendly tourism practices. The Victoria Falls region has always been a beautiful and unique destination, but with the right priorities and focus, it can become an even more desirable place to visit for years to come.

12 Apr 2023A Conversation with Zile de Kock00:32:16

Zile de Kock, executive marketing manager of Marine Dynamics, shares insights on how the tourism industry can adapt and survive during the COVID-19 pandemic. She discusses the impact of the pandemic on Marine Dynamics and how they have cut costs, expanded to Saudi Arabia, and offered specials for locals to sustain their business. Zile also emphasises the importance of conservation efforts, particularly in protecting the declining great white shark population, and urges the industry to prioritise it. Through attending tourism shows and making people aware of the significance of marine wildlife, Zile believes that companies can help protect the ocean ecosystem for generations to come. Join Zile as she shares her experiences and insights on the future of tourism in this engaging and informative podcast.

During the pandemic, Marine Dynamics had to cut costs, expand to Saudi Arabia and offer specials for locals. The tourism industry in South Africa, and globally, has been greatly impacted by COVID-19, but industry professionals have come together to support each other through the tough times. The friendships formed during the pandemic have strengthened the industry and made professionals more loyal to each other. They have also learned to prioritise each other's health and well-being, checking in regularly and offering support.

One of the biggest challenges facing Marine Dynamics, a shark cage diving company, is the decline in marine wildlife, particularly the great white shark population. This is due to overfishing, pollution, and the hunting of sharks by orcas. Marine Dynamics has tried to protect the shores of South Africa through court cases and lobbying the government, but financial support is needed to continue these efforts.

Zile de Kock, a representative from Marine Dynamics, has traveled extensively to experience different whale watching and marine wildlife tours around the world to stay on top of the industry and offer the best experiences to customers. She believes that the main thing that needs to change in the world of tourism is more focus on conservation.

Zile will be attending various tourism shows, including WTM Africa and Indaba, and hopes to attend WTM in London and other shows. She believes that attending these shows is the only way to make people aware of sharks and what amazing species they are, and that we should protect them and look after the ocean and the sharks because it's really important for the ecosystem.

18 Apr 2023A Conversation with Grant Fowlds00:40:12

We hear from Grant Fowlds, a conservationist fighting to protect rhinos in Africa. He shares his experiences of both heart-wrenching losses and inspiring victories in the battle against poaching, and discusses the challenges faced by conservationists, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these challenges, Grant remains dedicated to preserving the ecosystem and saving endangered species, and his determination offers hope for the future of rhinos and Africa's tourism industry.

Rhinos have been a target of poaching for over a decade, resulting in a dramatic decline in their population worldwide. However, there are individuals, organisations, and even entire countries fighting to protect these majestic creatures, and it is through their hard work and dedication that progress is being made.

Grant Fowlds, who has been involved in marketing the Eastern Cape as a tourist destination, is one of those individuals. Project Rhino, a collaboration among landowners, was born out of the need to protect rhinos from poaching.

Grant has seen a decline in the price of illegal rhino horn trading, which he attributes to the fact that it has become just another commodity in the illegal trade of money, sex, drugs, contraband, and weapons. He believes that educating people about the cruelty involved in harvesting rhino horn and the lack of medicinal or aphrodisiac properties in it can change the belief that it is a byproduct of a natural process like a deer's antler falling off.

However, in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, poaching rates have risen again after a temporary decline, posing a new challenge for conservationists. The tourism industry, crucial for conservation efforts and job creation in Africa, has been hit hard by the pandemic, leading to a loss of experienced staff in the industry.

Running a game reserve or ecosystem is expensive, with costs ranging from water for the animals to anti-poaching units. This cost is necessary to maintain the animals and their ecosystem, whether in a concession in a park in Central Africa or a private reserve with a fence and necessary equipment for protection. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of taking care of the Earth and preserving ecosystems. Every person on the planet is connected, and it is essential to plant trees, live responsibly, and re-wild to preserve the ecosystem.

Africa has a lot to offer in terms of tourism, with unique experiences such as mega herbivores, special places like Victoria Falls and Cape Town, gorillas in Central Africa, the migration in East Africa and rhinos in Southern Africa, and cultural experiences in places like Burundi. However, red tape and bureaucracy are significant stumbling blocks to making tourism easier in Africa, with endless forms to fill out and long queues at airports. Efforts are being made to make things easier for travellers, but there is still room for improvement.

Despite the many challenges faced by conservationists, their hard work is paying off, and rhino populations are slowly recovering. It is a long battle, but with the dedication and perseverance of people like Grant Fowlds, there is hope for the future of rhinos and other endangered species. Tune in to hear his inspiring story.

14 May 2023A Conversation with Stanley Edwards00:28:20

In this podcast episode, Graeme Watson speaks with Stanley Edwards, director of Platypus Digital, about how virtual reality (VR) can be used as a marketing tool for tourism businesses.

They stress the importance of focusing on content objectives when using VR, rather than just admiring the technology. They discuss the different ways VR can be used, such as 360 images and videos, virtual guided tours, and interactive and immersive experiences. They highlight how VR has changed the way people view and experience travel and real estate, and how it can be an ideal tool for selling destinations and providing users with an interactive tour.

During the podcast, Graeme and Stanley discuss how VR technology has evolved to become more accessible and cost-effective. In the past, VR was associated with expensive gear and complex production processes, but now it is easier to shoot and produce, and can be shared and embedded on multiple platforms. This accessibility has opened up opportunities for small businesses in the tourism industry to use VR as a marketing tool and reach a wider audience.

Stanley also emphasises the importance of storytelling when using VR for marketing. VR can be used to create immersive experiences that engage viewers and allow them to explore a destination or property at their own pace. This can create a stronger emotional connection with the viewer and increase the chances of them choosing that destination or property for their next trip or purchase.

The conversation also touches on the potential for VR to be used in other industries, such as real estate. Virtual walkthroughs of properties can give potential buyers a realistic sense of the space and help them make informed decisions without the need for in-person visits. This can be especially useful for international buyers who may not be able to physically visit the property.

Stanley can be reached at stanley@platypus.co.za. Tune into Kusa Cast to learn more.

04 Jun 2023A Conversation with Melissa Foley00:23:29

In the latest episode of Kusa Cast, Graeme Watson sits down with Melissa Foley, the passionate founder of All About Africa Consulting.

Melissa's mission is to promote social and environmental sustainability in the tourism industry throughout Africa, with a particular focus on ethical climbing on Kilimanjaro. As a board member of the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP), based in Moshi and Arusha, she works tirelessly to raise public awareness about the challenges faced by mountain crew members.

KPAP, an organization with a 20-year history, has created a monitoring program to ensure that local climbing companies in Tanzania adhere to best practices and provide fair wages, adequate meals, and suitable living conditions for their crew members. Out of approximately 160 properly licensed climbing companies in Tanzania, about 50 have chosen to participate in the KPAP program. This initiative has proven highly beneficial for these local companies, giving them a competitive edge in a saturated market.

What's remarkable about KPAP is that it's completely free to join, offering advantages to operations in terms of best practices and marketing. Despite its limited resources, KPAP provides educational classes and raises awareness about ethical climbing practices. In fact, due to increasing encouragement from consumers and agents, there has been a significant 30% rise in new local companies joining the program. The organisation relies on donations to sustain its operations and continue its crucial work.

One of the key objectives of Kiliporters.org is to prevent exploitation of porters and eliminate the practice of bribes being paid to guides for selection on climbs. Additionally, the organisation ensures that porters receive proper tips from clients at the end of the climb, further promoting fair treatment within the industry.

If you're passionate about promoting social and environmental sustainability within Africa's tourism industry and want to learn more about ethical climbing on Kilimanjaro, this is an episode of Kusa Cast you don't want to miss! Tune in to the podcast now to listen to Graeme Watson's engaging interview with Melissa Foley, and discover the inspiring work of KPAP and log onto www.kiliporters.org. 27 Jul 2023A Conversation with Mark Young00:39:48

Mark Young, co-founder of the Perfections Group, discusses his journey in the travel industry, from backpacking to starting a representation company.

He shares his experience of being made redundant before COVID and how he adapted by taking on different jobs. Mark also talks about the resilience and camaraderie in the tourism industry, the changing habits of UK travellers, and the future of the Perfections Group. He emphasises the importance of collaboration and open-mindedness in the industry. Overall, Mark's story highlights the strength and determination of those in the travel industry to thrive in the face of challenges.

Mark's journey in the travel industry began with his love for travel and backpacking. After working various jobs, he decided to pursue a career in travel and started at a well known travel company. However, he soon realised that product management was his true passion. Mark worked his way up and eventually co-founded the Perfections Group with Ryan Ashton. The company initially focused on representing African lodges but has now expanded to include Latin America and other destinations.

Mark's resilience was put to the test when he was made redundant a year before the pandemic hit. However, he used this time to explore different opportunities. These experiences taught him the importance of perseverance and helped him develop a stronger mindset.

Mark and I discuss the importance of collaboration and supporting one another, even among competitors. We both believe that there is enough business to go around and that working together can benefit everyone. Mark shares his experience of referring clients to other representatives and receiving referrals in return. This collaborative approach not only strengthens relationships but also opens doors to new opportunities.

05 Dec 2023Using Adventure to Raise Awareness for Elephant Conservation and Female Rangers00:28:57

Holly Budge is an adventurer and the founder of How Many Elephants, a nonprofit organisation that raises awareness about the African elephant crisis. Through her travels and expeditions, Holly realised the power of adventure to raise funds and bring attention to environmental and social issues.

She created How Many Elephants as a travelling exhibition that visualises the poaching data, showcasing elephants on a wall to represent the annual poaching rate in Africa. Holly also created a necklace made of vegetable ivory, which represents the daily poaching rate of 96 elephants. The campaign aims to raise awareness of the impacts of the elephant ivory trade in a non-gruesome and non-political way.

In addition to her work with How Many Elephants, Holly is passionate about supporting female rangers in conservation. She has spent time on the front lines with all-female and mixed ranger teams across Africa and was inspired by their dedication and impact. This led her to create World Female Ranger Week, an annual event that highlights the challenges and achievements of female rangers. Holly is also planning to organise trips for small groups to meet and patrol with the female rangers, providing a unique and off-the-beaten-path experience while raising funds for their work.

As a way to raise funds, Holly offers her services to speak at events. Holly can be reached at info@hollybudge.com, and please take a look at the websites for the charitable causes for How Many Elephants and World Female Ranger Week.

Jillian is based in Gaborone and has an extensive background in tourism, having worked for Peermont Hotels, Botswana Tourism, and as the Africa director for the World Travel and Tourism Council. She founded Africa's Eden with the vision of improving destination marketing by focusing on the needs of travellers and promoting regional collaboration.

Africa's Eden was established in early 2020 with the aim of improving regional tourism marketing. The organisation was created to address the lack of consumer-focused marketing and the need for regional collaboration in Southern Africa. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Africa's Eden has grown from 15 members to over 400.

Africa's Eden held its first major conference in February 2022, which was a significant success despite initial uncertainties about border openings. The event highlighted the industry's resilience and the importance of face-to-face interactions. Jillian emphasised the need to break down silos within the tourism industry, including those between regions, business practices, and sectors such as aviation and tourism. Collaboration across these areas is essential for sustainable growth and development.

Africa's Eden aims to expand its reach by including new countries like Mozambique, Malawi, and Angola. The organisation continues to promote in-destination events to provide immersive experiences and foster deeper relationships between buyers and the destinations.
