17 Feb 2022#136 – Romans and Doctrine of Salvation00:47:43

JT English and Kyle Worley talk through various terms that are commonly used when talking about Romans and the doctrine of Salvation.

Questions Covered in This Episode:

  • Over the last few seasons, we have been using and introducing a ton of terms that could be new for our listeners and thought: “Mother is the repetition of learning, right?” So let’s do some review and repetition on the terms in Romans that concern the doctrine of salvation.
    • Salvation
    • Sin
    • Righteousness
    • Justification
    • Faith
    • Sanctification
    • In Adam/In Christ
    • Flesh/Spirit
    • Adoption
    • Predestined
    • Called
    • Glorification

Helpful Definitions:

  • Salvation: To be saved from something.
    • Is the good news, at the highest possible level, that God loves His creation and is bent on redeeming us through the person and work of Jesus.
  • Original Sin: We are implicated in Adam’s sin.
  • Total Depravity: Our nature as a result of Adam’s sin.
  • Sin: Identity: We are no longer living in the identity God has given us. Idolatry: We are born into this world not giving our worship, affection, and loyalty to God. Immorality: We don’t behave as we ought. We are unable and unwilling to choose righteousness.
  • Righteousness:
    • From God: Righteous standing that God gives. The source of salvation. What we need to be made in order to be saved.
    • Of God: The perfect character of God that we are to imitate. God’s standard. His expectations of His people.
    • His faithfulness to his covenant promises: The character of God.
  • Justification:
    • Is to be declared righteous by the righteous God.
    • Forgiven for good, forever.
    • When we are justified by the blood of Christ, we are saved from sin’s penalty.
  • Faith:
    • The instrument of our salvation, we draw everything from the work of Christ and contribute nothing to it.
    • The ascent of our minds to that which God says is true. Adoration, God deserves my worship, love, and affection. Giving my actions over to Him, a life of obedience, allegiance, and loyalty.
  • Sanctification: Freed day by day to look more and more like Jesus.
    • As we are being sanctified, we are being saved from sin’s power.
  • Grace: You have been given freedom so that you can live in God’s way.
  • In Adam/In Christ: Federal Headship: You are either being represented by being in Adam or by being in Christ.
  • Flesh/Spirit: We are born in the flesh (our natural state apart from the intervening work of God in salvation), some are reborn in Christ and because of that are able to set their minds on things of the Spirit.
  • Adoption: We have been invited to fellowship with God. The beloved Father who welcomes us to His table.
  • Compatibilist: Hold in tension that God is sovereign and providential over everything and yet our wills are compatible and fully free within His sovereignty.
  • Predestined: God elects a people for himself before the foundations of the world.
  • Called:
    • General Call of the Gospel: The gospel proclamation to everyone.
    • Effectual Call: Those whom God predestined he calls through the preaching of the gospel into salvation. The spirit wrought activity of awakening the heart and bringing that person into Christ Jesus.
  • Glorification:
    • There is a time that is coming in the future where we will be gifted a resurrected body and we will be glorified. Meaning we will be free from even the ability to sin. We will be transformers from one degree of glory to the next. We increasingly become aligned with who Christ is.
    • When we are glorified, we are finally and fully saved from sin's presence.

  • When we say “we need each other,” what does that mean?
  • What are the threats and liabilities of relationships? What about not having these relationships?
  • Why are we using family-oriented language in this conversation?
  • Does this apply to those who are not believers?
  • How has this changed us? How has it changed our ministries?
  • Why is getting this right crucial?

27 May 2021#115 – I've Got A Question For You00:56:58

Jen Wilkin, JT English, and Kyle Worley answer listener questions and continue their debate on Christophanies.

Questions Covered in This Episode:

  • Lots of questions on Instagram about the Enneagram: How should we approach the Enneagram? Some suggest it’s not a biblical tool.
  • Is it wrong to present Bible stories to Kids in ways that leave open room for misinterpretation solely to make it more palatable? For example, not mentioning the massive loss of life during the flood...
  • What’s happening when Jesus breathes on the disciples in John 20?
  • Should worship leaders include spontaneous worship into a Sunday service? Or is that reserved for personal worship only?
  • Why, in Ps 51:4 does David say "against you only have I sinned," when he clearly has sinned against both Bathsheba and Uriah? How can I make sense of this?
  • What are common decisions and ways churches unknowingly undermine a healthy ecclesiology?
  • Thanks for the show notes! What are some good resources for connecting the family lines, relationships, & blessings/curses from the OT through to the NT? What can help me not miss the references original readers would have understood?
  • Can we get a last exchange on Christophanies and Theophanies?
  • In light of Genesis, take your pick. Sega Genesis or Super Nintendo? On a more serious note. If you were to teach a Bible study through Mark’s Gospel, what are some overarching themes and ideas you would want to emphasize?
  • Best/most accessible books on church history for the lay Christian?
  • One is the #1 book or resource you wish you would have had/used/read early in your ministry (1st year) rather than later?
  • What are helpful responses when participants in church discipleship programs and bible studies consistently don’t do the homework?
  • Can young children of believers partake in the Lord’s Supper along with their parents?
  • What is the difference between God’s presence in Eden/Tabernacle/Temple and his omnipresence?
  • What’s a novel or story outside of scripture that has had an impact on your life or worldview?
  • What is the discipline of God? Is it us living with the consequences of sin or something more?
  • What is the most frequent question each of you receive?
  • Favorite chips and dip?
  • If you could only eat one dessert for the rest of your life, what would it be?
  • What are we studying next year?

Helpful Definitions:

  • Ecclesiology: Doctrine of the church.
  • Christophany: An appearance of the Son of God before the incarnation.
  • Special (Redemptive or Blessed) Presence: God directs his blessed presence to particular places at particular times throughout the Old Testament and in the New Testament is demonstrated through the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. Manifested for the good of his people in unique times, places, and ways.
  • General Presence (Omnipresence): God rules and reigns over all things, everywhere fully present. Includes but is not limited to his blessed presence.

15 Sep 2022#156 – Who is God? - God the Son00:50:10

Jen Wilkin, JT English, and Kyle Worley continue their discussion on the doctrine of God by talking about God the Son.

Questions Covered in This Episode:

  • When we refer to God the Son, we refer to him as the second person of the Godhead, does this mean he is in second place?
  • From where and when has God the Son come? Who created God the Son?
  • What does it mean to say that God the Son is eternally begotten?
  • How does this shape the way we talk about God the Son?
  • Does Jesus have one will or two?
  • What relationship does God the Son have to the Father?
  • What is the definition of Open Theism?
  • What is the error in Open Theism and Eternal Function Subordination?
  • What is the distinction between the Son and the Holy Spirit when they are both sent?
  • Why is this view of the Son of God better?
  • Is it possible to talk too much about God the Son, or emphasize him too much over the Father or the Holy Spirit?

Helpful Definitions:

  • Trinitarianism: God eternally exists as one essence and three distinct persons, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, each of which is fully God, yet there is One God.
  • Eternally Begotten: The Son’s unique attribute in relation to the Father and the Spirit: the Son is sourced in the Father, but there was never a time when the Son began. All things are from the Father, through the Son, and by the Spirit.
  • Homoousios: Same essence
  • Homoiousios: Like essence
  • God Ad Extra / Economic Trinity: What God Does.
    • A view of the Trinity focused on God in the history of redemption, or the functional acts (economies) of the Godhead in the creation and salvation of the world; this perspective is distinguished from that of the immanent Trinity.
  • God Ad Intra / Immanent Trinity: Who God is.
    • The view that centers on the Trinity in and of Himself, or the internal relations between the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as present (immanent) only to Himself (c.f. Jn 1:1-2,18); this perspective is distinguished from that of the economic Trinity.
  • Inseparable Operations: That which any person of the Godhead does, is rightly attributed to God. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
  • Monothelitism: Jesus has one will. This was denied.
  • Dyothelitism: Jesus has two wills; the divine will and the human will. One person with two natures.
  • Tritheism: Views the three persons of the Trinity as three distinct gods.
  • Eternal Functional Subordination of the Son: A position that subordinates the Son’s divine will to the Father’s divine will.
  • Social Trinitarianism: The view that God is only his activity in the world.
  • Open Theism: The view that God is subject to some of the creaturely limitations or some of the operations of the world in ways that we are subject to.
  • Christocentric Trinitarianism: The very persons of Father, Son, and Spirit are to highlight God the Son; He is the image of the invisible God and the one that the Spirit is supposed to show us.

22 Sep 2022#157 – Who is God? - God the Spirit with Dr. Gregg Allison00:42:14

Jen Wilkin, JT English, and Kyle Worley are joined by Dr. Gregg Allison to continue their discussion on the doctrine of God by discussing God the Spirit.

Questions Covered in This Episode:

  • When we refer to God the Spirit, we refer to him as the third person of the Godhead, does this mean he is in third place?
  • From where and when has God the Spirit come?
  • Who created God the Spirit?
  • What does it mean to say that God the Spirit is eternally proceeding?
  • Why was it significant in the early church to clarify that the Spirit proceeded from the Father and the Son?
  • What are common questions when it comes to the Holy Spirit?
  • Should we pray to the Holy Spirit?
  • What do we do with the language, Holy Spirit come fill this room or come be with us?

Helpful Definitions:

  • Trinitarianism: God eternally exists as one essence and three distinct persons, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, each of which is fully God, yet there is One God.
  • Monotheism: The belief and worship of only one God, as opposed to multiple gods. The Triune God is one in essence, with one nature, one will, and one power without subordination among the Persons of the Godhead.
  • Eternally Begotten: The Son’s unique attribute in relation to the Father and the Spirit: the Son is sourced in the Father, but there was never a time when the Son began. All things are from the Father, through the Son, and by the Spirit.
  • Eternal Procession: The Holy Spirit’s unique attribute in relation to the Father and Son: He has always come from the Father and the Son and will continue to do so forever. All things are from the Father, through the Son, and by the Spirit.
  • Spiration: Breathe

17 Feb 2023Season 9 Patreon Q&A01:01:38

Jen Wilkin, JT English, and Kyle Worley answer questions submitted from their patron supporters! To learn more and become a patron visit patreon.com/trainingthechurch.

Questions Covered in This Episode:

  • If we understand that Jesus, in His spiritual body, sits at the right hand of the Father after His ascension. How do we resolve the tension this presents to God's unchanging nature if before His ascension it was not Jesus in His spiritual body, particularly, but the Son of God that was at the Father's right hand?
  • When reading the Psalms there often references to statutes, ordinances, laws, testimonies, commandments, and precepts given by God. Is there a significant difference in the meaning of these different words?
  • I would love to hear each of you discuss the relationship between small groups and learning environments in your respective churches. How can these two spaces best complement one another without feeling competitive?
  • What does a typical week look like for everyone (work, church, family, fun, rest time)?
  • Would love your thoughts on good questions to explore with a teen in my home as we discuss this: Adam's sin resulted in all humanity being born with a sin nature and without Christ we 'can't not sin'. He believes it would've been more just for God to give each individual person a 'fruit on the tree' moment before they automatically 'receive' a sinful nature. In his view, we talk about someone who isn't a Christian choosing to sin, and yet at the same time, we believe that their nature is that they can't actually choose something different. This seems so contradictory to him. If God really wanted to give us a choice, why did he set us up to not be able to choose him first? Not us as in all humanity, but us as individuals. He doesn't think that 'we're human so we'd always fail' makes sense, because the reason that is true is because of the sin nature...so if it wasn't for that, we wouldn't necessarily fail.
  • On the doctrine of simplicity: Is god wrath? I've heard God is love but has wrath. But is wrathful an attribute of God? If wrath is an attribute, then, in the new heavens and new earth, after judgement day, what is that wrath directed towards?
  • "How did women in the OT share in the sign of the covenant?" How can something as important as the sign of the covenant between God's people could be reserved to something only men could do (aka. circumcision) and what if baptism as the sign of the new covenant was restricted to only men. Were women being left out of an essential part of what it meant to be in a relationship with God and his covenant people. Do y'all have any thoughts on this that might help resolve that tension?
  • Often, we hear about heated conversations related to women as pastors but we never hear such discussions about single male pastors. But, of course Paul writes about singleness as something he recommends to the church. Was that only intended for his specific context? Or is it biblically unfaithful to exclusively have married men with families in pastoral or deacon roles?
  • I have been focusing on Luke, and was freshly moved by the references to Mary treasuring up different revelations/experiences with Jesus (the shepherds visit after the angel of the Lord appearing to them and Jesus calling the temple his Father's house). Would it be appropriate to consider Luke as connecting Mary's experience with Psalm 119:11?
  • Why is Ephesians off limits?
  • Jen referred to Psalm 139 as the “lady Psalm,” - I’m wondering why she called it that?
  • What are your takes on celebrating Christmas by incorporating Santa Claus and on celebrating Halloween. How do you go about making those decisions and giving grace to those who differ?
  • If you could wave a magic wand, how would you organize a local church? What are the first three ministries you would focus on establishing in addition to the Sunday gathering?
  • Kyle you have recommended several sci-fi or fantasy books or authors through the seasons. So far I have really enjoyed all of your recommendations could you make some more?
  • The 6th command is “Do not Murder.” Why were the Israelites multiple times commanded to kill whole nations women and children?
  • What obscure or lesser known and taught passages of the Bible are some of your favorites and deserve more notice?
  • What about prophets/prophecy today? Is prophet a current office? What is a prophet today, or what is prophecy today? Can just anyone prophecy? Does any of it exist now?
  • Considering recently the implications of The Father as the one who sends, I'm seeing James 1:17 in a new light. The Father is the one who sent Jesus, sends the Spirit, ... and is the direct sender of blessings? Is that what I should be taking away here? So a quick, heartfelt "Thank you, Jesus!" upon receipt of rain, provision, etc, may not be the best expression of gratitude, when it should be "Thank you, Father!"? Are we robbing God the Father of the worship due Him when we attribute His goodness to Christ? Are there other ways you can think of that we commonly misdirect worship to one person of the Godhead when it is deserved by the other (or ascribe it only to One when it should be to all Three)?

Helpful Definitions:

  • Prophet: Speaking on behalf of God.
  • prophet: In tune with the Holy Spirit wanting to build up the life of the church.

  • How would you interpret John 14:28 in light of the Trinity?

  • Is there now a difference between the people of Israel and the elect? Or are the elect now considered God’s chosen people?
  • Any chance you will spend more time on Calvinism in the future? The topic scares a lot of people, including myself, but I’m wondering if I should continue to go to a church that believes this, even if I don’t?
  • Is it heretical or heterodox when one does not believe in the Trinity but in modalism (think Oneness Pentecostals)?
  • Why are you guys so awesome?
  • Years ago I had a friend in the psychiatric profession and He said some individuals are pure evil–this leads to my question: Is possession by demons, evil spirits, still occurring?

Questions Covered in This Episode:

  • What’s an incommunicable attribute of God?

  • What does God need to survive?
  • What do we mean when we say that God is “self-existent?” How is this different from saying God is “self-sufficient?”

14 Oct 2021#122 – Father Abraham00:29:40

Jen Wilkin, JT English, and Kyle Worley continue their discussion in the book of Romans by looking at Romans 4:1-8.

Questions Covered in This Episode:

  • So the church hears that everyone is broken and everyone has fallen short and Paul predicts the question from the Jewish Christians: What about Abraham?
  • What role did Abraham play in Israel’s story? Why invoke his name here?
  • Paul pulls Abraham into the justification question: Why?
  • What did Abraham believe? (V.3)
  • Let’s talk about the fundamental difference between faith and works. Talk about “gift” language...
  • Then we get a David name drop (V.6): What was David’s significance in Israel’s story? Why is invoking his name a big deal?

Helpful Definitions:

  • Unmerited Gift: You cannot earn it, undeserved, or incongruent: doesn’t line up with what you have done, its disproportionate. Once we have received this grace that we do not deserve and we cannot earn it’s supposed to have an impact on us. Its unconditional but not without hope for impact or reciprocity.
  • Unconditional Gift: A gift given without any conditions.
  • Righteous -> Blessed: To have one’s lawless deeds forgiven, sins covered, and that the Lord will not count your sin against you.

Jen Wilkin, JT English, and Kyle Worley continue the discussion on Genesis 1-11 by discussing what happened before the beginning, who/what existed before the beginning, the work of God prior to creation,  when did God create angelic forces, and did Satan fall before the beginning.

Questions Covered in This Episode:

  • What was happening before the beginning?
  • Who or what existed before the beginning?
  • Trinitarian relations before the beginning?
  • What are the practical implications of God being uncreated?
  • The work of God prior to creation?

Helpful Definitions:

  • Trinitarianism: God eternally exists as one essence in three distinct persons, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, each of whom is fully God, yet there is One God.
  • Asiety: God is a se, or has aseity: He is self-existent and self-sufficient.
  • Immanent Trinity: The view that centers on the Trinity in and of Himself, or the internal relations between the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as present (immanent) only to Himself (c.f. Jn 1:1-2,18); this perspective is distinguished from that of the economic Trinity.
  • Economic Trinity: A view of the Trinity focused on God in the history of redemption, or the functional acts (economies) of the Godhead in the creation and salvation of the world; this perspective is distinguished from that of the immanent Trinity.
  • Eternally Unbegotten: The Father’s unique attribute in relation to the Son and the Spirit: The Father is the first origin of all things and without origin himself. All things are from the Father, through the Son and by the Spirit.
  • Eternally Begotten: The Son’s unique attribute in relation to the Father and the Spirit: the Son is sourced in the Father, but there was never a time when the Son began. All things are from the Father, through the Son and by the Spirit.
  • Eternal Procession: The Holy Spirit’s unique attribute in relation to the Father and Son: He has always come from the Father and the Son and will continue to do so forever. All things are from the Father, through the Son and by the Spirit.

06 Feb 2025Jesus: Liar, Lunatic, or Lord? (Incarnation and Christology)00:43:07

Jen Wilkin, JT English, and Kyle Worley discuss a core doctrine of the Christian faith; Christology.

Questions Covered in This Episode:

  • What is the common approach to Jesus in our cultural moment?
  • Where should someone start if they want to dive deep into the question of who is Jesus?
  • What about when Colossians 1 calls him the “firstborn?”
  • What are the essentials of Christology?
  • What are the implications of leaning into one of the natures of Jesus?
  • In the creeds (Athanasian, Apostles, Nicene, Chalcedon) they focus on clarifying who, what, and how Christ is. Why this intense focus so early on?
  • How does Christ perfectly fulfill the three offices of prophet, priest, and king?

Helpful Definitions:

  • Logos: The word.
  • Σκηνόω: Skénoó: To dwell, to tabernacle, to pitch a tent.
  • Arianism: The false view that Jesus, the Son of God, is the first created being.
  • Πρωτότοκος: Prototokos: First-born, eldest.
  • Communication of Attributes: We communicate from the two natures; the divine nature and the human nature to the one person Jesus Christ. Anything you can say about God you can say about Jesus, anything you can say about humanity, except sin, you can say about Jesus.
  • Docetism: The false belief that Jesus’s humanity was a figment or presentation, not a true human nature.

Helpful Definitions:

  • The Gospel: Promised beforehand through prophets, the Holy Scriptures, concerning the Son of David, concerning the Son of God. The gospel is centered around the person and work of Jesus Christ, who God is and what God is doing through Jesus, in order to liberate, save, and reconcile a people to himself for His glory.
  • ἐπαισχύνομαι (epaischynomai): to be ashamed (of). Carries a connotation of physical suffering.
  • Effectual Call of Salvation: God the Father sends the Son, God the Son accomplishes salvation for us on the cross, and God the Holy Spirit effects and applies that gospel into our lives.
  • Salvation: Always of spiritual deliverance for everyone who believes.
  • Belief or Faith: Being able to say and confess Jesus Christ is Lord. Includes giving your whole self away to Jesus as King. Faith is not what makes salvation actual, what Jesus did on the cross and in the resurrection is what makes salvation actual.
  • Belief or Faith: Our agreement, our affections, and our allegiance.
  • Righteousness of God: 3 potential prosectives
    • The righteous standing that God gives in Jesus. God’s gracious source of salvation for in it the righteousness of God is revealed. Related to justification. God declares us right.
    • The perfect character of God that we are to imitate. Righteousness as the standard of God. Related to sanctification. God is what is right and we should be too.
    • God’s faithfulness to his covenant promises. Righteousness as his covenant keeping character. Related to assurance of our future glorification. God does what is right.
