15 Oct 2019S1E48: Klinefelter Syndrome and Artificial Insemination00:21:41

This week we're responding to a listener request and discussing Klinefelter syndrome, a genetic condition that affects approximately 1 in 600 men. It affects fertility and can cause azoospermia (semen that contains no sperm), but the good news is there are fertility treatments that can help men with Klinefelter syndrome to become fathers – that's where artificial insemination comes in. (Which of course can help people in other situations, too!)

08 Oct 2023Preconception Genetic Screening: a new Medicare rebate for all Australians00:20:09

Over 10 years in the making, there is now Medicare funding towards preconception genetic testing. Our discussion includes

  • What is preconception genetic screening?
  • Who is a recessive genetic carrier? (tl:dr we all are)
  • How could I be a carrier for a serious genetic condition and yet not be aware of it through my family history?
  • Why has there not been a Medicare rebate before?
  • When will the new Medicare rebate apply from?
  • What will this mean in terms of choosing a genetic screening test?
  • What is achieved by the panel funded for CF/SMA and Fragile X?
  • What about the Ashkenazi Jewish screening panel and why is that separate?
  • Why should I consider putting my rebate towards expanded panel screening options?
  • Results are relevant to a reproductive relationship - what does that mean?

19 Mar 2023Understanding Fertility Counselling with Suellen Peak00:27:52

In Victoria, in order to access assisted reproductive technologies there is a mandatory counselling component. The concept of supportive counselling can be daunting if it isn't something that has been tried before. In this conversation with Suellen Peak, Senior Fertility Counsellor at Life Fertility Clinic Melbourne, we discuss what to expect and how we can benefit from this session.

Suellen Peak has a Masters Qualified Positive Psychology Practitioner and Accredited Mental Health Social Worker with over 20 years of clinical experience. Over the course of her career, Suellen has worked with diverse groups of people, in a variety of settings that include community organizations, not for profit agencies, and public and private health care settings.  For the past 15 years, Suellen has specialized in counselling patients to navigate infertility and assisted reproductive technologies. She has a particular interest in Wellbeing Science, and fuses mindbody practices with the evidence base interventions from the field of positive psychology, neuroscience and psychology to help people to cultivate their full potential. Suellen is a full member of the Australia and New Zealand Infertility Counsellors Association and is a licensed Mental Health First Aid Trainer.  Suellen is happiest riding around on her scooter Ruby, baking in the kitchen and travelling the world.

06 Apr 2025The New Definition of Fertility00:10:00

This week Australia's Medicare has broadened the definition of infertility, aligning with recommendations from the Gorton Review and the 2018 MBS review. So, we ask Dr Raelia Lew, what does this mean for us?

We quickly mention a few organisations by their abbreviations:
ANZREI - Australia and New Zealand Society of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility
Fertility and Sterility - Fertility and Sterility is a monthly peer-reviewed medical journal published by Elsevier on behalf of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine.
FSANZ - Fertility Society of Australia and New Zealand
RANZCOG - The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists

28 Feb 2021S1E100: AMH - The fertility test?00:24:20

Anti-Mullerian Hormone is a measure of the ovarian reserve. And what that means is it’s a way of understanding what the ovary is capable of and in terms of certainly IVF treatment and egg freezing, where we stimulate the ovary to try and induce the development of multiple eggs in the same month, the AMH can indicate how many eggs might be available for a given person.

This week we speak with Dr Margaret Sherburn, a physiotherapist with decades of experience who specialises in continence and women’s health. She's also a senior lecturer and academic at the University of Melbourne. 02 Mar 2025Big Miracles and Fertility for Singles with Dr Daniel Lantsberg00:27:04

We speak to Dr Daniel Lantsberg, featured in the channel 9 show "Big Miracles" with his patient, Anna.

Dr. Daniel Lantsberg is a Fertility Specialist at Melbourne IVF. After graduating with honors from Israel's Ben Gurion University in 2008, he completed extensive training at world-class Israeli hospitals before relocating to Australia for an additional three-year subspecialty fellowship at the Royal Women's Hospital and Melbourne IVF. With special interests in elective egg freezing, age-related and unexplained infertility, male infertility, PCOS, endometriosis, and fibroids, Dr. Lantsberg maintains private practice in East Melbourne while holding public appointments at the Royal Women's Hospital where he trains junior doctors.

Anna is a 39-year-old woman  pursuing life as a Single Mother by Choice (SMBC). Her journey highlights the unique medical and emotional considerations involved, from selecting fertility treatments appropriate for solo parents to navigating Victoria's specific regulations regarding donor sperm access, which differ from other Australian states. The show documents how Daniel guides patients like Anna through critical decisions about known versus clinic recruited donors while addressing common concerns about single parenthood.

When is a menstrual cycle considered irregular?
How long after my first appointment would fertility treatment or egg freezing start?
Why is there a mandated counselling session in Victoria?
Why do we need to get a referral to see a fertility specialist?
After a lapcroscopicprocedure to clean up Endo etchow long will it take for it to grow back?

07 Jun 2020S1E65: Listener Request: MTHFR - WTF?00:22:02

What is the MTHFR gene and what does it do?
MTHFR stands for Methyl-Tetra- Hydro- Folate Reductase. It is an enzyme: a protein that catalyzes a chemical reaction in our body, converting folate to (as the name implies) methyl-tetra-hydro-folate. It has become known colloquially (a little unfairly) as the mother-f#$%er gene.
