Tisha BeAv | Why Were the Keruvim Hugging at the Time of the Churban? by Rav Dovid Gottlieb

The Romans couldn't understand why they found the keruvim in a loving embrace when they destroyed the Beit HaMikdash. As a result they ridiculed us for this seemingly base display of affection.  How do WE understand this phenomenon?
What should we know that they were missing? A number of new approaches to understand the symbolism of the keruvim's embrace at the time of the churban: Hashem's enduring love of the Jewish people, Hashem comforting us - and us comforting Him, advice about the need to be active, mindful and serious about Yiddishkeit in galut.

Tetzaveh | B'nei Yisrael's Presence in the Mishkan, by Rav Yitzchak Etshalom

The first two pesukim in Parashat Tetzaveh - the last two in chapter 27 of Shemot - seem to be out of place and are repeated, nearly verbatim, in Vayikra 24. A reexamination of what is stated and what is NOT stated in this passage sheds light on the symbolism of the contribution of Bnei Yisrael to the light and the association with Maamad Har Sinai.

In the Egyptian narratives, there are several references to תועבת מצרים For Egyptians to break bread with Hebrews is considered an "abomination", as well as the status of shepherds - and the sheep themselves are called that by Moshe. What is the "abomination" here and what is behind it? We survey the approaches of the Rishonim and, building on the proposals of ibn Ezra and Radak, propose a novel explanation.

Am Levadad Yishkon #10, “Sinai: The Foundational Moment,” by Rav Asher Haber

After a lengthy period of slavery and suffering in Egypt, the moment had finally arrived: Am Yisrael was redeemed from bondage, and headed for the Promised Land.  However, even before the process began, Moshe Rabbeinu was informed that there was a more immediate destination, something they would need to do before entering the Land.  First, they need to “serve God” on Mount Sinai.  What was to happen there, and why was it necessary?

24 Jul 2024Pinchas | "And Their Libations"00:31:11

Pinchas | "And Their Libations", by Rav Yitzchak Etshalom

Why are the libations and grain offerings (נסכים ומנחות) repeated with each korban in our parasha?

Parashat Pinchas is known for its presentation of the "Mikdash-Calendar", i.e. the listing of Korbanot to be brought daily, every Shabbat, Rosh Chodesh and on Moadim in the Mikdash. However, in spite of the already presented laws of the grain+oil offerings (מנחות) and wine libations (נסכים) that are to accompany most Korbanot, these are spelled out and repeated in each section in our presentation. We explore the dual nature of these Parashot - one standard and one unique - and suggest that the "surprising" perspective may hold the key to these seemingly needless repetitions. This shiur was given on the occasion of Rav Etshalom's father's 25th yahrzeit: לע"נ אבי מורי הרב אשר אהרן בן אברהם בנימין ז"ל - may his memory always be an inspiration.

17 Nov 2022Chayei Sara | What's The Matter With Canaanite Girls?00:35:30

Chayei Sara | What's The Matter With Canaanite Girls? by Rav Yitzchak Etshalom

When Avraham's days are nigh, he summons his chief slave and administers an oath that he not take a Canaanite girl as a wife for Yitzhak - "from the Canaanites among whom I reside". This motif reappears - perhaps - when Esav marries two Hittite women and again when Yehudah (possibly) marries a Canaanite girl. By looking at all of these sources along with the mention of a Canaanite woman bearing a son to Shimon, we survey the proposed explanations for Avraham's directive and if (and how) it impacted on his progeny. We propose a surprising take, which is anchored in the Rishonim, that the problem with the Canaanites was not inherent in their status nor in their behavior, rather in their location "in whose midst I reside".

23 Dec 2021Shemot | The Roots of Subjugation00:41:27

Shemot | The Roots of Subjugation, by Rav Yitzchak Etshalom

The opening chapter of Shemot details the oppression, mandated infanticide and overall enslavement of Bnei Yisrael under the thumb of Egyptian rule. After a brief introduction in which we discuss the nature and causality and its inherent multi-layered reality, we observe several linguistic nuances in this opening chapter which seem to point to a connection between these horrors and the narratives of Yoseph as a brother as well as Yoseph as an Egyptian viceroy. The literary structure of the passage (1:15-22) is then presented, as an argument towards seeing an overt as well as covert cause behind the servitude and related decrees.

08 Jan 2024Shemot | The Mystery Behind Moshe's Name00:48:02

Shemot | The Mystery Behind Moshe's Name, by Rav Yitzchak Etshalom

Is "Moshe" a Hebrew name or an Egyptian name?

We explore the first 10 verses of Shemot 2, detailing the birth of the baby who would prove to be the agent of salvation - his being hidden in the reeds of the Nile, the role of his sister and the princess in saving him and his naming. We review the passage carefully, noting each unusual twist in the text, including unexpected additions and surprising omissions from the story. Along with numerous methodological parenthetic observations, we analyze the Egyptian and/or Hebrew meaning of the name of this baby who ultimately leads Bnei Yisrael from Egypt to Sinai to the east banks of the Jordan. This shiur was given in memory of החבר יחיאל at the Young Israel of Hollywood.

01 May 2024Acharei Mot | Vayikra 17: Mishkan to Machaneh00:38:39

Acharei Mot | Vayikra 17: Mishkan to Machaneh, by Rav Yitzchak Etshalom

The pivot from cleansing to sanctity.

Parashat Acharei Mot is made up of 3 segments; the first is a conclusion to the "Torat haMishkan", as it prescribes how to cleanse the Mishkan of impurities; the final segment opens up the "Torat haMachaneh", detailing how to infuse sanctity into our mundane spheres of life. The middle section, which contains five commands, seems to be both out of place and internally contradictory, presenting laws that are apparently temporary yet declaring them to be חקת עולם - a permanent rule. In this shiur, we examine ויקרא יז and present an argument for its sequence and location.

15 Dec 2022Chanuka, Bein Mizrach leMaarav00:37:04

Chanuka, Bein Mizrach leMaarav, by Rav Yitzchak Etshalom

The famous Beraita which details the various standards of fulfillment of the Mitzva of Ner Chanuka (BT Shabbat 21b) is, on careful inspection, challenging and replete with both inherent and contextual difficulties. A careful examination of other relevant sugyot relating to מצות הדלקת נר חנוכה reveal that there was an essential difference in both practice and approach to this Mitzva between the Bavli practice and that maintained in Eretz Yisrael. By carefully reexamining that popular Beraita, we can discern a "Bavli layer" and an "Eretz Yisrael" layer which, once successfully woven together, present us with the unified hierarchy of practices. This shiur was given in memory of Mrs. Evelyn Graber z"l

18 Apr 2024Pesach | A Tale of Two Sedarim: From Bnei B'rak to Lod00:33:37

A Tale of Two Sedarim: From Bnei B'rak to Lod, by Rav Yitzchak Etshalom

Why wasn't R. Gamliel at the "Seder" in B'nei Brak?

Although we envision the evening of the Seder as being focused on the story of יציאת מצרים, there is another theme which holds a position of honor in the evening's discussion - the laws of Korban haPesach. Just as the famous "Seder" in Bnei Brak involved 5 of our greatest sages engaged in the recounting of the story of the Exodus all night, the Tosefta tells of a "parallel" seder led by R. Gamliel, where the focus of discussion all night was הלכות (קרבן) הפסח. The significance of the Korban, although relegated to commemorative status after the destruction of the Mikdash, still has a significant impact on the nature of the evening. We explore the dispute among Tannaim - and, later - Rishonim - as to whether the Korban Pesach needed to be eaten before midnight or could be eaten until dawn as a reflection of different approaches to understanding the underlying reason for the Korban and, essentially, the nature of the celebration of this most powerful of sanctified feasts.

The well-known and familiarly sung 2nd Berakha that accompanies the lighting of the Ner Chanuka is praise for God Who has wrought great miracles for our ancestors...בימים ההם בזמן הזה - "in those days at this time". These last four words were not always included in the berakha and in some versions, there was a conjuctive letter "vav" - בימים ההם ובזמן הזה that carries a different meaning. We trace the development of this berakha, propose its genesis and earliest sources and then, following the changes in wording, suggest that the earlier formulation reflected a distinct appreciation for the holiday of Chanuka (and much the same may be said about Purim). This shiur was given in memory of Mrs. Shirley Jungreis - שולמית בת משה העניך ז"ל.

Can You Invite Non-Religious Guests for Shabbat or Yom Tov Meals?? by Rav Dovid Gottlieb

In the last shiur we saw 16! different possible mitzvot when relating to non-frum Jews. Today we will discuss invitations, especially relevant as we are coming upon the Pesach Seder.

Most people have non-Orthodox relatives and/or co-workers - can you invite them for a Shabbat meal or to the Seder if you know that they will drive? What responsibility do we have for other people's sins?

Parshat Toldot - Esav's Merit, written by Harav Yaakov Medan

Chazal's portrayal of Esav as a wicked murderer does not quite match the relatively mild description of Esav in the actual text of the Torah. How can we explain this discrepancy, and what does it mean for us today?
