The Hashey family was living a normal life. Joe was a high school teacher and business owner. Mell was a former social worker turned stay-at-home mom of three. Then 2020 happened and turned their family upside down.

They found themselves giving up their "dream home” and moving 2,000 miles away to a town where they didn’t know anybody.

It was the best thing that could have happened for their family.

Joe and Mell used their experience to build the Strong Family Co. framework that any family can use to establish values and stress-free family leadership.

4 Hurdles to Being a Good Enough Mom

 1-- You constantly doubt yourself. You don't have a belief that you are exactly the right mom for your kids

2-- Motherhood is serious all the time. You always strive for perfection for yourself and your family. You never let down your hair and admit to mistakes or have fun.

3--Motherhood is for lone wolves. You don't have community; you need community.

 4--You think you're superwoman. You are human. Let yourself be human. Give yourself some slack. 

 

Self-Care: Journal about all of the people you have in your life.  Who is your community? Plan ideas on how to connect with those people in the next 30-90 days.

Friendship Intimacy is where you feel seen and safe in a satisfying way.

How close do you feel to your friends right now?  1-10.  70% of us rate 5 or below.

We are hungry for closeness, the answer is not to make more friends.

3 Common Dominators Connect All Friends

  1. Positivity—joy, affirmation, gratitude, fun. 5 positive to negative
  2. Consistency—hours logged, time put in together, where you build your story. Why school friendships where easy.
  3. Vulnerability—where you are seen and talking about what is going right and wrong.  Hardships and big dreams.  You can only feel known if you share your big thoughts.

 

The more time we spend the stronger the friendship triangle.  When we are lonely, we need to move some people up the triangle and not meet new people.   This triangle is about how much we practice. 

When we have high positivity we feel satisfied.

When we have high consistency we feel safe.

When we have high vulnerability we feel seen.

 

 

 

Self-Care:  Reach out to an old friend and ratchet up the consistency factor.

I can't wait for you to hear the story of Foster Care & Adoption that Ginger Bearg lives and shares about. She is a wife, mother, and high school math teacher. God called Ginger and her husband, Dustin, to grow their family, by fostering and adopting. Move into 2024 with a Plan

When I say plan I mean make room for anticipation.  We have all had an unplanned day and wondered where all the hours went.  

 

You are a fantastic mom and an amazing human.  You have so many choices, and I love moving because it reminds me of all the options I have in life. 

 

We are MOVING into a new year. Let’s take a few tips from moving cross country to help us

 

  1.  Review Your stuff

–Look at your photos of 2023. What needs printing? What’s the theme? What was the best of the best each month?  

 

  1. Tend to important documents

–Transfer your calendar/ planner.  Take yourself on a date for this task.

 

  1. Dream– Talk about the upcoming year with others.

When you move, the fun part is all of the options.  The overwhelming part is the options, too, so take the time to figure out what matters to you.  Will a word of the year help?  Big, scary goals like 75 hard or running streak or a giant book goal?

 

  1. Anticipate and sign up.  There are no big giant goals this year. 30-day stretches with intention.  My word this year is process.  You can use that word in many ways, and I want to use it in all of the ways.  But for now.  I’m leaning into process vs outcome.  I can control so few things in life.  That's what 2023 taught me.  How little I have control and how fun it is to have your hands wide open.

 

  1. Jump in– Be a beginner– get lost.  Make mistakes.  Get messy.



The goal of 2024 isn’t an outcome but the becoming.

 

January 30 day goal– Laughter every day.  This one has been on my list for a while and I saved it for the most serious month I know.  It is the month where everyone wants to go hard and improve themselves.  I want to laugh.  I have a book to read, articles picked out, a couple of YouTube videos, and some family-friendly comedy specials. Motherhood is way too serious to be serious all of the time. 

Goal– Laugh every day – if I don’t feel like laughing, my option is to practice laughing for 5 minutes. 

 Children 300 times a day, adults 17.5 

 

Family Fun: Watch a funny movie or TV show.  Let your kids see you let down your hair.  Ask them if they know if you like silly things.

What makes a Good Meal

  • Staying Power (Fat, Protein, Fiber)  & Veggie and Fruit. 
  • Always make sure there is something familiar you know that they like and that you want them to eat.
  • The food we're still learning to like-- not foods we don't like. 

How to Cut Costs:

  • Look for the product that is in season in the area where you are.  Froze and Canned vegetables are processed at peak nutrition. 
  • Pay attention to meat cuts and prices.  Get familiar with chicken thighs
  • Meatless meals that focus on eggs and milk
  • Notice and be aware of portion sizes

How Heather Plans:

  • She plans five days, not 7.
  • They have a Taco Tuesday every week.
  • Look at your calendar and figure out how much time you have to make food.

It's back to school time, so I've talked about friendship with my kids this week.  I've also talked with other women about loneliness this week.  You're not alone; let's nudge it up a bit.

Friendship Intimacy is where you feel seen and safe in a satisfying way.

How close do you feel to your friends right now?  1-10.  70% of us rate 5 or below.

We are hungry for closeness, the answer is not to make more friends.

3 Common Dominators Connect All Friends

  1. Positivity—joy, affirmation, gratitude, fun. 5 positive to negative
  2. Consistency—hours logged, time put in together, where you build your story. This is why school friendships where easy.
  3. Vulnerability—where you are seen and talking about what is going right and wrong.  Hardships and big dreams.  You can only feel known if you share your big thoughts.

 

The more time we spend, the stronger the friendship triangle.  When we are lonely, we need to move some people up the triangle and not meet new people.   This triangle is about how much we practice. 

When we have high positivity, we feel satisfied.

When we have high consistency, we feel safe.

When we have high vulnerability, we feel seen.

 

 

 

Self-Care:  Reach out to an old friend and ratchet up the consistency factor.

Play Idea: Use YouTube to find karaoke tracks and have a family sing-off.

About Christy: 

My name is Christy. I am a teacher and have worked with kids and parents for 30 years.

It has never been easy for me to mother. We’ve had quite a few unexpected hurdles. Through that experience, I’ve learned self-compassion, mindfulness, and human-centered mothering that sees me as a person with needs and priorities. 

In November 2018, we moved again to a new town where I didn’t know anyone. On a whim, I recorded a podcast and uploaded it before we headed off to the children's science museum. This book is a celebration of that boldness. When it started, it was called Everyday Motherhood. During the great shutdown of 2020, I changed the title to Keep Calm Mother On. Each episode has always ended with a self-care and family connection play idea. I want it to be practical and helpful for you, the voice I wish I had found when my husband was on his first deployment and I had two toddlers at home. 

 

Put your hand on your heart with me and breathe. You are doing a good enough job. 

 

Don’t give up. I am so lucky to mother shoulder to shoulder with you right now. I am glad you are here.

 

 

 

Self-Care:  Give yourself a deep hug and take credit for all of the ways you love your life and your children.  You love so generously and in so many ways that you don't even notice it any more.  So take a moment and celebrate your journey and your path.

The best way to get ahead is to burn out. In healthy cultures, quality of life is expected and having a life is celebrated. You're encouraged to put your well-being above your work.

How am I resting in beauty?

1.  Go on a regular nature walk weekly.  Follow the same path.  Could you become familiar with it? 

 

2.  Fill the space with music.  I love music by Karl Jenkins, Peter Paul, Mary,  Max Reicht,  Elizabeth Mitchel, Henry Purcell, and JJ Heller. 

 

3. Sit with beauty.  Create it.  Notice it.  Watch it.   I'm intentionally seeking beauty before I make dinner.

 

4. Remember beauty.  Use your phone to remind you of the beauty you've seen recently. What did you snap a photo of?  What memory can you hold?

 

5.  Slow down.  

 

Self-Care Idea: Make a list of 100 things you love.

Family Play Idea:  How many things can you do with pumpkins?  Roast, Carve, Exploid, Float, Drop, Throw.

Self-Care Idea:  Try out this stopping practice--

Take five photos today and pause to breathe and say thank you for the moment and say I remember ... and see what bubbles up. it may be something like "I remember to be gentle." Or "I remember I really enjoy this." ❤
 
 

 

Family Play Idea: Go on a walk with each child one on one this long weekend.  Ask them to show you something beautiful and take a photo of it.  Don't forget to snap a selfie of the two of you together. Future you will want the photo.
