19 Apr 2022 | #64 Data, Records and Detection Dogs with Sgt. Stèphan Petersen | 01:32:12
Stèphan is a project manager, instructor and operational handler within the canine unit of the Dutch National Police. He started as a operational handler in the field of Forensic Human Scent Detection- and Tracking dogs, Narcotic Detection Dogs and Urban Search & Rescue. He was deployed for USAR missions after the 2015 earthquake in Nepal and the devastating explosion in Beirut (2020). As an expert in the field of detection dogs he and the project team utilized and developed a training protocol for Digital Storage Detection Dogs in the fight against cybercrime. Because cybercrime is not constrained by borders, it is very important to work together as law enforcement, training “digital detection dogs” at an international level. Sharing information in the field of training data and discussing operational cases will significantly improve the level of this specific new detection discipline. Canine teams will never replace human search teams, but even in this digital era, they are a valuable addition to the innovative technology making the world a safer place and protecting against increasing forms of cybercrime.

20 Nov 2020 | Season 2 Episode 37: "The value of failure" with NYPD Lt. John Pappas and Sgt. Randy Brenner | 01:27:14
This is a powerful episode where we talk to the Commanding officer and unit Sgt. of the prestigious NYPD Transit Bureau K9 unit. This unit is comprised of over 50 dog teams and protect NY City for every major event that happens, from UN National Assembly, US OPEN, New Year's Eve, Times Square, the entire subway system in their jurisdiction, and so much more. We cover the "value of failure" and pushing yourself outside your comfort levels so you and your dog can grow as a team. Hope you enjoy it.
Lt. John Pappas: over 25 years of Law enforcement experience. I started my career with the Amtrak Police, and in 1997 I joined the NYC Police Department. I rapidly rose through the ranks and became a Lieutenant in 2005. That same year I was tasked with creating the newest specialized unit within the NYPD, the Transit Bureau Canine Unit. The purpose of the unit is to deploy highly trained canine teams to perform a proactive, pedestrian and rail based patrol, in order to deter, detect, respond and mitigate an attack in the most dense urban environment in the Western Hemisphere, the NYC Transit System. The Transit Bureau Canine Unit is the largest of the NYPD's canine units, and the largest mass transit specific unit in the Western Hemisphere. Because our canines are capable of being in dense crowds, the unit has also been tasked with covering all large events in NYC, such as the UN General Assembly, New Year's Eve, US National Tennis Open, all sporting events, and large parades. Over the years, my team and I have created highly advanced counter-terrorism tactics and deployments, and have responded to more terror attacks than any other canine unit in the United States. My team and I have been consulted to assist in the successful creation of other police canine units, and we continue to assist other canine units nationally and internationally on canine training, management, deployments, tactics and mitigation strategies. We work in close cooperation with federal, state and local partners to conduct multifaceted training sessions to strengthen the regional cooperation of canine interoperability. It is my distinct privilege to be in command of one of the most advanced canine units in the world.
Sgt. Randy Brenner: is the Director of USS - K9 Solutions, Inc., located in Suffolk County, New York. Randy has been in law enforcement for over 20 years as well as the Director of Training, Patrol Supervisor and Canine Handler for the Canine Unit. In 2016 Randy was promoted to Sergeant Special Assignment. He assisted in the creation and implementation of the NYPD Transit Bureau Canine Unit, the Counterterrorism Canine Unit and the Vapor Wake Program. He also assisted the development of the Advanced Canine Detection Harness and was responsible for coordinating canine safety lectures in schools and outreach programs. Randy specializes in explosive detection and his knowledge and experience has increased the effectiveness both on the job and as director of USS - K9 Solutions, Inc.

09 Dec 2022 | #79 Spaniels and eliminating the question marks with Josh Riddle | 01:13:05
Episode 79, In this podcast I get to speak with a Springer and Working Cocker Spaniel breeder Josh Riddle of Rockey's Kennel. Josh and his father have been breeders of Field Champion Springer and Working Cocker Spaniels. Over the past 2 years I have been going to Josh and his father to select, raise and train many of the Spaniels we own and have trained and sold as Detection Dogs. The Spaniel breed has been a popular choice as a detection dog in the UK and Europe, now they are starting to gain popularity here in the USA. Like in the past when the detection industry changes breeds it is important to handlers and trainers to know the breed they work with so that we can maximize the communication and working relationship between this breed and the handlers. We discuss how this breed operates and what makes them unique and some take aways if you are considering this breed in the future. 12 Mar 2021 | Season 3 Episode 43: The mind of a puppy with Dr. Emily Bray | 01:54:49
On this podcast, we get to finally discuss the cognition testing and research on how predictable the cognition tests on puppies are in determining if they are potential detection or working dogs. Many of us who work breed or train dogs always know its a crap shoot at times to know if the puppy we are working with can or will turn out to do what we hope.
Dr. Emily Bray conducted her post-doctoral research associate at the Arizona Canine Cognition Center (in the School of Anthropology at the University of Arizona) and Canine Companions for Independence, where I study how early developmental, behavioral, and cognitive factors impact later life outcomes.
I earned my PhD in Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania where I worked with Robert Seyfarth, Dorothy Cheney, and James Serpell. For my dissertation, I partnered with The Seeing Eye, Inc. to conduct a longitudinal study investigating puppy development, which involved tracking a cohort of 138 puppies from birth until completion of the program.
Prior to UPenn, I earned a B.A. in Psychology and English from Duke University, where I worked at the Duke Canine Cognition Center studying inhibitory control in pet and Canine Companions for Independence® assistance dogs with Evan MacLean and Brian Hare.

23 Feb 2022 | #60 Digital Dust - Electronic Storage Media Detection Dogs... Future of Detection | 00:44:27
Episode 60 Digital Dust - Electronic Storage Media Detection Dogs. Jeff Meyer Host of HITS K9 Radio interviewed me for his podcast on this topic and this is the interview. As criminal activity evolves with the digital age and technology, Dogs are playing a larger and larger role in helping locate crucial items of evidence. Many people when they think of dogs trained in Electronic Storage Media (thumb drives, SD/Micro SD cards and other items) they tend to think of crimes involving sexual predators... but when it comes to crimes these day nearly all of it is done on a digital device. From White collar financial (Crypto Currency), to Narcotics, to terrorism... Dogs trained to help find these devices are the future of detection in Law Enforcement. Since this type of Detection has started it has already evolved. So have the techniques to use these dog and training of these dogs. Even the deployment of this type of dog is also unique. We talk about all this and more... If you are employed with or attached to Law Enforcement Agency you can contact me for more Information on this topic. cameron@fordk9.com or visit www.fordk9.com

This Episode we speak with Mike Suttle of Logan Haus Kennels... Mike is a well know breeder and trainer. Mike has well proven breedings of Malinois and Dutch Shepherds as well as Labradors. I personally have had 2 dogs from Logan Haus (1 Malinois and 1 Labrador) both have been outstanding dogs. *Episode Warning, Mike is on a cell phone during this interview and at times has spotty signal, he cuts out from time to time but you can still follow what he is saying and speaking about. Logan Haus Kennels is owned by Mike Suttle. Mike has been training and raising working dogs for over 30 years. He began with the first working sled dog kennel in West Virginia where he trained Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes. At age13, he titled his first dog in obedience. Growing up on a cattle farm, he learned how to train herding dogs for livestock. Throughout his high school years, he worked as a veterinary assistant. He then spent 8 years in the United States Marine Corps where he was first introduced to the military working dog program. For the last 20 years, he has dedicated his efforts solely on working military and police dogs. He has attended over 50 military and police dog seminars and has spent thousands of hours training with the best police dog trainers throughout the world. As a breeder Mike has produced puppies that have been used in USAR, Police, SWAT, US Customs, US Border Patrol, DOD, as well as International Police, Security, Customs, and Special Operations. Logan Haus Kennels has bred, raised and prepared more puppies from birth to being selected and used for Tier 1 SOCOM positions than any other kennel in the United States. Mike has earned titles in Schutzhund, SDA, and AKC and has trained many police service dogs. Mike has also worked as the co-owner of Signature K9 for 5 years where he developed many new pieces of training equipment and spent hundreds of hours working in the field with military working dog handlers and police K-9 handlers to discuss training and equipment issues. In 2013 Mike started a Canine Trainers School and has helped professional trainers from several countries to better understand dog training in the areas of shaping behaviors, bite development, and odor detection. Together with input and feedback from other trainers, Mike developed a very effective system to start and imprint puppies as young as 5 weeks old in detection work, this system is being adopted by many programs all over the World who are recognizing the benefits of starting with puppies and teaching them the skills they need as they develop into detector dogs. Mike has recently completed a 3 year rotation as an Explosives Detection K-9 handler and consultant in Afghanistan on a security contract. 14 May 2020 | Season 2 Ep. 28: Nathalie van Hellemond "Education and Tradecraft" | 01:05:06
In this episode, we get to speak to Nathalie van Hellemond from Scent Imprint for dogs. Nathalie is a trainer and helps work all dogs at the Scent Imprint for a dogs training center in Holland. Nathalie discusses her journey and education in holland to become a dog trainer. What I find very unique about what she talks about is how the education system is a mix of learning theory in the classroom followed by 2 years of interning at various jobs to help each student find the best chance for a career in a job they want moving forward. This is a great mix of education and vocation, something I would love to see here in the USA.
