07 Mar 2023Breaking Free from People Pleasing: A Conversation with Annie Henderson00:44:14

The dialogue between Heather Hester and Annie Henderson unfolds the layers of people-pleasing, a common yet often under-discussed trait that can hinder personal growth, especially in the LGBTQIA community. Annie, who specializes in coaching individuals through their coming-out journeys, shares her own evolution from a life dictated by the need to please others to one characterized by authenticity and self-empowerment. The episode highlights the emotional struggles inherent in people-pleasing, including the incessant self-doubt and anxiety that accompany the fear of disappointing others. Annie's candid reflections draw listeners in, making the episode relatable and insightful as it addresses the root causes of these behaviors and their impact on mental well-being.

As the conversation progresses, Annie delves into her experience as a parent of a pansexual child, emphasizing the crucial role of fostering a supportive environment. She discusses the challenges and joys of guiding her child through the complexities of identity in a world that can often be unwelcoming. This perspective opens up a broader discussion about the generational shifts in understanding and acceptance within families. How would you feel if you had the ability to express your deepest emotions in a safe and supportive space? Is it possible that the secret to growth and self-realization is hidden in our vulnerability? Award-winning actor and activist, Yuval David, joins us on the show today to explore these questions and more. We kick off our conversation delving into the powerful realm of storytelling, and how it shapes our perception of ourselves and others. To wrap it up, we delve into the world of the LGBTQIA+ community, examining the power of vulnerability and the critical aspect of setting boundaries. Yuval and I bring to light the importance of standing up as an ally and using our voices for tangible positive influence. We then explore Yuval's groundbreaking art project, Wonderfully Made, which portrays Jesus as a member or ally of the LGBTQ community. The conversation begins with Vox recounting his personal journey into the field of sex education and intimacy consulting, revealing how his early experiences with sexuality were shaped by an open and accepting household. This background allowed him to develop a unique perspective on the importance of body acceptance and the exploration of desires in a judgment-free environment. This podcast episode delves into the nuanced realm of college admissions, emphasizing the vital importance of authenticity in the application process. We engage in a profound discussion with Dyllen Nellis, a distinguished college admissions coach and founder of Next Gen Admit, who elucidates how students can effectively communicate their personal narratives and values in their applications. Dyllen advocates for a holistic approach, underscoring that grades and test scores, while significant, do not singularly determine a student’s admission prospects; rather, it is the unique story each applicant brings that truly captivates admissions committees. Throughout our dialogue, we explore strategies for nurturing intellectual curiosity in students, fostering their individual passions, and guiding them in articulating their authentic selves. By the conclusion of the episode, we aim to equip parents and students alike with invaluable insights into navigating the complexities of the college admission landscape.

The discussion unfolds around the challenges and nuances of the college admissions process, particularly emphasizing the transformational journey students encounter while preparing their applications. The speakers reflect on the significance of authentic self-discovery in crafting college essays, noting that the admissions process is not merely a bureaucratic hurdle but a profound opportunity for personal growth. In sharing insights from their conversations, they highlight the misconception that academic grades and test scores are the sole determinants of admission success. Instead, they advocate for a holistic approach, which prioritizes the articulation of personal narratives and values unique to each applicant. The episode serves as a guide for both students and parents, encouraging a shift in perspective towards viewing college admissions as an exploration of identity rather than a mere checklist of achievements.

Takeaways:

  • The importance of being judicious in podcast selection to avoid political overload is paramount.
  • Engaging in meditation and embracing quiet reflection can greatly enhance one's mental well-being.
  • It is essential to recognize that one's narrative and personal experiences hold significant weight in college applications.

04 Apr 2025Beyond the Breath: The Importance of a Free Press00:34:29

The salient point of today's discourse centers on the imperative nature of freedom of the press as a cornerstone of democratic society. As we delve into the intricacies of this topic, we shall explore the alarming erosion of such freedoms in contemporary America and the vital role that a free and independent press plays in safeguarding democracy by holding those in power accountable. Furthermore, I shall illuminate the historical context of the First Amendment, emphasizing its foundational significance in protecting citizens from governmental overreach. We shall also examine the contemporary challenges posed by misinformation, disinformation, and media consolidation, which threaten to undermine the integrity of journalism. Ultimately, this episode serves as a clarion call for enhanced media literacy and the revitalization of local journalism as indispensable tools for fostering an informed citizenry and a resilient democracy.

The podcast episode is an incisive examination of the current state of press freedom and its critical importance within the framework of American democracy. Heather Hester, the host, articulates a fervent appeal for the necessity of an independent press, asserting that the erosion of this freedom poses a significant threat to the democratic ideals that underpin society. The narrative commences with a call to action, urging listeners to engage in 'Hands Off' day, reflecting a broader movement against the encroachment of authoritarianism by influential figures who seek to monopolize power and influence.

As the conversation unfolds, Hester delves into the historical underpinnings of the First Amendment, contextualizing its establishment as a safeguard against government overreach. The episode highlights the role of landmark judicial cases that have shaped the landscape of press freedom, with particular emphasis on the vital function of journalism in holding the powerful accountable and providing the public with essential information. Hester's exploration extends to contemporary challenges, including the rampant spread of misinformation and the complexities introduced by social media, which often prioritizes divisive and sensational content over substantive reporting.

Hester calls for a renewed commitment to media literacy as a means of empowering individuals to navigate the increasingly convoluted informational terrain of today’s society. By fostering critical thinking skills and encouraging engagement with diverse media, the episode advocates for a collective effort to rejuvenate local journalism and promote informed civic participation. As Hester poignantly concludes, the responsibility to protect democratic values and uphold the integrity of the press lies not only with institutions but also with each individual, as we strive to cultivate a society that values truth and transparency.

Takeaways:

  • The First Amendment is crucial to protecting the freedoms of speech and press, ensuring democracy's vitality.

30 Mar 2025Beyond the Breath: The Imperative of Authentic Allyship00:17:39

Allyship represents a vital and active commitment to justice, equity, compassion, and love, which we explore in depth throughout this discourse. I have reflected extensively on the multifaceted nature of allyship, recognizing that it transcends mere passive support and demands genuine action. We examine the imperative for individuals to embrace their roles as allies across diverse communities, particularly during these tumultuous times when marginalized voices are in dire need of amplification and support. It is crucial to understand that authentic allyship requires not only listening and learning but also engaging in uncomfortable conversations and actions that challenge existing power dynamics. By acknowledging the various communities that require our advocacy and taking tangible steps to support them, we can foster a more equitable society and truly embody the essence of what it means to be an ally.

A profound exploration of the concept of allyship is presented, delving into its multifaceted nature and the imperative for individuals to engage actively rather than passively in the pursuit of social justice. I reflect upon my personal journey as an ally, emphasizing that true allyship demands a commitment to understanding, advocating, and making sacrifices for marginalized communities. In this discourse, I dissect the stark contrast between performative allyship and authentic engagement, illustrating with tangible examples how the former often manifests as superficial gestures devoid of genuine impact. I implore listeners to ponder their own experiences of standing up for others, particularly in moments of discomfort, as these instances often define the essence of true allyship.

The episode further delineates various communities requiring allyship, including the LGBTQ community, racial minorities, individuals with disabilities, and women. Each segment elucidates the specific challenges these groups face and articulates the roles allies can play in dismantling systemic barriers. For instance, I emphasize the importance of inclusive language and the necessity of advocating for equal rights within the LGBTQ community. In discussing racial equity, I highlight the critical role of white allies in amplifying voices of color and participating meaningfully in movements such as Black Lives Matter. Through these discussions, I aim to foster a deeper understanding of the responsibilities and actions that constitute effective allyship.

Concluding the episode, I offer actionable steps for listeners to embody allyship in their daily lives. I stress the necessity of continuous education, the importance of challenging biases, and the imperative to support systemic change. By advocating for legislative reforms and prioritizing the needs of marginalized communities, we can collectively forge a more equitable society. I encourage listeners to reflect on their capacity to be allies and to share their stories of authentic allyship, thus inspiring others to engage in this vital work. The essence of this episode is a clarion call for all individuals to commit to being active participants in the pursuit of justice, equity, and compassion, even in the face of discomfort.

Takeaways:

  • Allyship is an active and ongoing commitment to justice, equity, compassion, and love.
  • Authentic allyship requires continuous learning, unlearning, and taking action even when it is uncomfortable.
  • To be effective allies, we must listen to and elevate the voices of marginalized communities.
  • Challenging our own biases is essential in the pursuit of genuine allyship and social equity.
  • Supporting legislation and policies that promote equity is vital for true allyship.
  • Performative allyship is inadequate; we must engage in meaningful actions rather than superficial displays.

21 Feb 2025Beyond the Breath: A Reflection on Modern Discourse00:27:26

This podcast episode delves into the pressing concerns surrounding nationalism and its implications for democracy in contemporary society. I reflect on two poignant speeches that resonate with the current political climate, emphasizing that the roots of division often stem from seeds of distrust and blame. I draw parallels between historical precedents and contemporary issues, highlighting the dangers of authoritarianism and the necessity for civic courage. The discourse urges listeners to contemplate their roles in fostering inclusivity and combating hate, particularly in light of governmental actions that undermine diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. Ultimately, I call upon each individual to assert their voice and take actionable steps, thereby contributing to a collective resistance against tyranny and fostering a more just society.

The discourse presented in this episode of the podcast delves into the profound implications of societal narratives shaped by political discourse. The speaker embarks on an introspective journey, reflecting upon two poignant speeches that resonate with the current socio-political climate. One of the speeches, delivered by Governor J.B. Pritzker, draws critical parallels between historical authoritarian regimes and contemporary political strategies that seek to divide and ostracize marginalized communities. The speaker articulates a deep concern regarding the insidious nature of hatred and nationalism, positing that these elements serve as precursors to tyranny. This examination encourages listeners to engage deeply with the implications of blind allegiance to supremacy, advocating instead for a patriotism rooted in inclusion and diversity. The speaker underscores the necessity of courage and collective action in the face of rising authoritarianism, urging individuals to confront fear and silence with resolute opposition. Through this lens, the episode not only highlights the pressing need for vigilance against oppressive narratives but also calls for a unified front in defense of democratic values, thereby fostering a space for reflective contemplation and active engagement in societal discourse.

  • In times of political turmoil, individual actions of courage and solidarity become essential to resist the tide of oppression.
  • The discussion calls for a collective understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion, emphasizing their importance in countering systemic injustices.

About the Guest:

Jessie Kanzer was born in the Soviet Union. At the age of eight, she emigrated with her family to Brooklyn. She is a writer, former reporter and actress.

For years, Jessie felt like a failure, unable to hustle hard enough to "make it" either as an actress or in the rat race. Her childhood as a Russian immigrant in post-Cold War America heightened her insecurity and threatened her identity, desperate as she was to fit into a culture that was alien at best and hostile at worst. This loss and eventual reclamation of her sense of self sent her on a spiritual journey during which she discovered the Tao Te Ching, which changes everything for her. The Tao taught her that there was power in stillness and that all struggles come bearing gifts if you know how to recognize them. Her message will connect with listeners desperate to find grounding as we move into a new year filled with trepidation and no guarantees of a return to normalcy.

In 1995, blindsided by her 14-year-old daughter’s suicide attempt, Jackie entered a world of depression, addictions, medical mysteries, and deadly silences.

The journey into the world of mental health services and cultural taboos left Jackie feeling lost and alone.

“OK” on the outside, with “really, I’m fine,” her most frequent response to inquiries about how she was doing. Jackie hid her deep, psychic wounds from the world behind a façade of frantic entrepreneurial activity.

10 Jan 2023Navigating Identity: Insights on Non-Binary and Gender Fluid Experiences01:12:45

The podcast episode delves into the nuanced world of gender identities, specifically focusing on non-binary and gender fluid identities through a heartfelt panel discussion. Heather, the host, brings together her daughter Gray, her friend Kate, and Autumn Graham to share their experiences and insights. The conversation kicks off with a critical examination of the terminology surrounding gender identity. Autumn uses a creative analogy comparing gender to a numerical spectrum, helping to clarify that non-binary identities exist as part of a broader continuum rather than strict categories. This foundational understanding sets the stage for a deeper exploration of individual experiences and societal perceptions.

Throughout the episode, the panelists recount their personal journeys with gender identity, highlighting the emotional complexities involved in coming out and the varying responses from family and society. Kate shares her experiences as a trans masculine person, discussing how her identity has evolved over time and the importance of creating supportive environments for young people. Gray adds that many individuals struggle with the fear of rejection from their families, particularly in cultures where traditional views on gender are prevalent. This discussion sheds light on the intersection of cultural expectations and personal identity, emphasizing the need for open communication and understanding within families.

The conversation culminates in a powerful reminder that understanding gender identity is an ongoing process for both individuals and their families. The panelists encourage listeners to engage in meaningful dialogues, replete with empathy and curiosity, to foster a sense of security and acceptance. They stress that every person's journey is unique, and as such, the approach to understanding and supporting one another must be tailored to individual experiences. This episode serves as a valuable resource for parents and allies looking to navigate the complexities of gender identity, while also affirming the importance of community and connection in the LGBTQ experience.

Takeaways:

  • The importance of understanding that everyone's journey in self-identification is unique and ongoing.

Truly listening is not just about hearing the words; it's about completely immersing ourselves in the conversation and giving it our complete focus.

Listening emerges as a transformative force in relationships in the latest episode of Just Breathe, where Heather Hester converses with the insightful Candy Motzek. The discussion begins with a powerful inquiry into the nature of our interactions: How might our lives shift if we prioritized listening over speaking? Candy's expertise shines as she elaborates on the three levels of listening, drawing a vivid picture of how many of us engage at a superficial level, often distracted by our inner thoughts rather than fully being present for others. This episode serves as both a tutorial and an invitation to challenge ourselves to become more attuned to what is being expressed—not just through words, but also through tone, body language, and the emotional nuances that accompany conversations.

Candy shares heartfelt anecdotes and practical strategies that listeners can implement in their daily lives, particularly in the context of parenting. She addresses the common scenario of parents feeling overwhelmed yet striving to engage meaningfully with their children. The conversation emphasizes the importance of being physically and emotionally present, suggesting techniques such as eye contact and mindful body language to enhance connection. As they navigate through these themes, the episode highlights that listening is a vital act of love and respect, fostering deeper bonds within families and communities. It becomes clear that improving our listening skills can lead to more fulfilling relationships and a greater sense of belonging.

The episode also touches on Candy's work with new coaches, emphasizing that effective listening is essential in the coaching process. As she guides aspiring coaches on their journeys, she reinforces the idea that the ability to listen deeply not only enriches personal relationships but also enhances professional development. This multifaceted discussion ultimately advocates for a shift in mindset towards valuing listening as an essential skill that can transform not only individual lives but also the broader societal landscape. By embracing this practice, listeners are inspired to cultivate a more empathetic approach to their interactions, enriching their experiences and the lives of those around them.

Takeaways:

  • Listening more and talking less can significantly transform your relationships and connections.

24 Jan 2023Navigating Gender Bias in Schools: Insights from Jason Ablin00:34:34

Jason Ablin's insights into gender equity in education come alive in a riveting discussion with Heather Hester about his book, "The Gender Equation in Schools." This episode delves deep into the often-overlooked biases that exist within educational systems and the significant impact they have on students' experiences and outcomes. Ablin, who has spent over 35 years in various educational roles, brings a wealth of knowledge and personal experience to the conversation, emphasizing the need for educators to cultivate awareness and understanding of gender dynamics. The dialogue explores how traditional gender stereotypes can limit students’ potential, particularly in fields like mathematics and science, which continue to be perceived as male-dominated. Hester and Ablin advocate for a transformative approach to education, one that encourages all students, regardless of gender identity, to pursue their interests and excel in all subjects. The episode serves as a crucial reminder for educators and parents alike that fostering an inclusive environment is essential for the growth and success of every child.

Ablin shares a significant moment from his early teaching career that reshaped his perspective on gender engagement in the classroom. He recounts how feedback from observers revealed his misinterpretations of student engagement, particularly among girls. What he initially perceived as high engagement was, in fact, a reflection of compliance. This realization pushed him to reevaluate his teaching methods and strive for deeper connections with all his students. Throughout the conversation, Hester and Ablin unpack the complexities of gender identity and the implicit biases that can skew educators’ perceptions of student behavior. They challenge listeners to reflect on how their own biases may influence their interactions with students and stress the importance of creating learning environments where every student feels recognized and respected.

The episode further examines the critical intersection between gender identity and mental health within school settings. Ablin passionately argues that schools must serve as nurturing environments where children feel free to explore their identities without the pressure of conforming to societal norms. He points out that students are often subjected to gender boxes created by adults, which can lead to feelings of anxiety and isolation. The conversation encourages educators to embrace a more inclusive approach, fostering spaces where all expressions of gender are welcomed and celebrated. As they wrap up, Hester and Ablin emphasize the need for continuous dialogue around gender equity in education, urging listeners to become advocates for change within their own communities. This episode not only sheds light on the challenges faced by students but also inspires actionable steps toward creating a more equitable and supportive educational landscape.

Takeaways:

  • Awareness and education are foundational to creating inclusive environments for all individuals.
  • Implicit biases can significantly affect how educators interact with students of different genders.
  • Gender stereotypes impact students' self-perception, especially regarding their abilities in math and literacy.
  • Creating safe spaces in schools is crucial for students exploring their gender identities.
  • Strong role models are essential for inspiring girls to pursue STEM and academic success.
  • Teachers must actively work to understand their own biases to effectively support all students.

About our Guest:

Jason Ablin (@JasonAblin) is the author of The Gender Equation in Schools: How To Create Equity and Fairness For All Students. He has served as a teacher, department chair, principal, and head of school. He holds national certification in leadership coaching and mentoring from the National Association of School Principals

Hester also explores the emotional landscape that parents and children navigate when facing non-affirming attitudes. She highlights the need for parents to equip themselves with facts and strategies to respond effectively while safeguarding their children's well-being. The conversation touches on the significance of recognizing the personal journeys of both the LGBTQIA child and the non-affirming family members. Hester emphasizes that understanding takes time, and she encourages listeners to approach these dialogues with grace while being prepared to set clear boundaries. By focusing on education and compassion, she helps listeners find a balance between advocating for their children and maintaining family relationships. Ultimately, the episode serves as a guide for parents, offering both emotional support and actionable steps to navigate the holiday season with confidence and love.

04 Feb 2020Self Care - The Ultimate Plan for Taking Care of YOU!00:44:35

In this episode, Heather Hester discusses the importance of self-care. While massages, mani/pedis, time with friends, and exercise are all beautiful self-care strategies, Heather uses this episode to dive deep into the "whys" and "hows" of a well-rounded self-care plan. She talks about aligning the following areas:

* Physical Health

* Fitness

* Relationships

* Career

* Finances

* Mental Health

* Spirituality

Self-care is important for everyone but can be especially valuable during difficult or uncertain times. Heather discusses how self-care became vitally important as she and her husband supported Connor as he struggled with anxiety and depression as well as impulse control and dangerous behavior. She learned that she had to separate herself enough so that every minute wasn't a crisis, and sometimes remove herself altogether to refill her cup so to speak.

Essentially, self-care is putting on your own oxygen mask before you assist those around you - you can only help others when you are the best version of yourself!

03 Mar 2020Understanding the Mental Health of Your LGBTQ Teen00:33:54

In this episode of Just Breathe, Heather Hester discusses mental health specific to our LGBTQ kids starting with some tough questions:

1. Why are depression and anxiety increasing in our kids when overall awareness is also increasing?

2. What are the underlying potential causes that ALL youth have in common?

3. What shifts are needed across the board ie. family/school/professionals?

Heather takes a look at the signs and symptoms of depression and anxiety as well as statistics specific to our LGBTQ kids. She talks about the importance of awareness, and being available and then takes apart the "why" as well as the "what we can do."

This episode will not only help you understand LGBTQ-specific adolescent mental health better, but it will also give you tips and information that will help you support your child.

My resources page is a great place to start! I have my favorite websites, articles, and books listed here. I refer to it often, so take a look around. I also add to it monthly, so keep an eye out for new information!

The Trevor Project is a go-to resource for saving young LGBTQ lives.

A personal favorite, Psychology Today allows you to search for all types of therapists using different filters. Love this one!

The Administration for Children and Families will allow you to search for youth and family service agencies in your region. (When in doubt, Google "youth and family services near me.")

An all-around good resource, The National Alliance on Mental Illness provides a plethora of information.

09 Jun 2020Differently Wired with Debbie Reber00:57:02

017 - In this episode, Heather interviews Debbie Reber, NYTimes bestselling author of Differently Wired, and the creator of the Tilt Parenting Community and Tilt Parenting podcast. She is a speaker, mentor, educator, and book coach.

Debbie has created 18 shifts, or what she calls tilts, to help parents navigate parenting a child who is differently wired. Although her parent audience differs in some ways from Heather's, the tilts work brilliantly whether you are parenting a child who has ADHD, sensory issues, anxiety, or lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or questioning.

"...we want to form, what I call, an uneasy alliance with that fear...so we can say, I see you, I know what you're trying to do, I appreciate you're trying to protect me - I've got this - and we want to come up with evidence for how that fear may not be true. We're trying to loosen up the grip of fear and open up to the possibility of what might be..."

Debbie's website, Tilt Parenting Community, and podcast are FILLED with extraordinary resources, and her Tilt Together Facebook group is an excellent place to connect with parents. Here is the link for Todd Rose's End of Average, which Heather and Debbie discuss in detail.

23 Jun 2020Raising Hell with Julie Ferwerda00:56:34

018 - In this episode, Heather interviews Julie Ferwerda, researcher and author of Raising Hell - Christianity's most controversial doctrine put under fire. This is an absolute must-hear if you've ever questioned the existence, possibility, or reality of Hell.

As parents, allies, and advocates of LGBTQ kids, teens, and young adults, if we've been raised in any kind of religion, one of the first fearful thoughts that pop into our heads when our kids come out is - are they going to hell?? And for all of the LGBTQ listeners, this fear is likely times a thousand!

Julie spent well over a year researching the Greek and Hebrew texts and interviewing dozens of experts to offer "compelling evidence historically, philosophically, and scripturally as to why the doctrine of hell is the biggest and most damaging deception of the modern church."
