13 Sep 2023Mum, Mud and Motivation01:03:03

Have you ever wondered how the dreams of your childhood could possibly shape your future? Well, on this maiden episode of 'JobsWorth' we explore that very concept with my guest, Lisa Hawker, who also happens to be my Mum.

We discuss her evolution from aspiring spy and actress to a successful self-employed artist. From banking to BT, all the way through to the discovery of her true passion - ceramics, this is a tale of courage, determination, and resilience. A single full-time mother juggling parenting, work, and education, all while pursuing her dream career, Mum's story is testament to the fact that sometimes, the most unconventional path can lead to the most rewarding destination.

As she opens up about her journey, we learn about her struggles, triumphs, and the lessons she's learned along the way as well as the importance of self-belief when it comes to pursuing your dreams.

Anyone who is lucky enough to have their mum around knows that as you get older, opportunities to actually sit down and speak to your parents are pretty rare and whilst I thought I might immediately regret the decision to have her on as the first guest I feel so fortunate I got the chance to record this.

Enjoy.

13 Dec 2023Pens, Paper and Purpose00:52:53

Do you ever feel like you're living a life that's not truly your own? You're not alone. I've invited my brother, Luke Adam Hawker, an accomplished artist, best-selling author, and father, to share his journey of trading a stable job for one fueled by passion. We dive into his past, his transition from a graphic designer and architect to a successful artist and author, and the balancing act of fatherhood and career.

Luke lets us in on the brave choice he made to leave a traditional job and start his own design business. Yes, he did trade a seemingly glamorous job of designing palaces for the Saudi royal family, but he found it lacking in passion. He reflects on the importance of following one's passion and the significance of a supportive network when taking the leap into entrepreneurship. We also discuss our shared experiences as fathers and entrepreneurs, highlighting our trials and triumphs in trying to strike the right balance.

The journey to finding purpose and fulfillment in one's work is never an easy one, but it's rewarding. Luke’s journey, achievements, and legacy offer hope and inspiration to anyone considering the path of self-employment. We discuss the rewards that come with taking risks, the importance of transparency, and the role of a supportive partner in pursuing creative projects. Listen in and get inspired. Whether you're contemplating a career change, an aspiring artist, or a parent juggling work and family life, this episode is for you.

06 Mar 2024Breaking Boundaries01:26:02
Ever wondered how a childhood passion can ignite a trailblazing career in interior design and entrepreneurship? Charlotte Debond-Sayer joined me to share her extraordinary journey from dreaming of beautifying spaces as a child to creating The Boundary, a unique Essex-based wedding and events venue. This episode unravels Charlotte's story, weaving through the transformative impact of motherhood on her career, the resilience needed to shift from employee to business owner, and the importance of setting a powerful example for her daughters.

The path to success is as much about the missteps as the milestones. Charlotte and I traverse the education and experiences that led her to interior design, reflecting on how a blend of family influence, academic choices, and a healthy dose of independence shaped her professional ambitions. We highlight the critical moments of her career, from the serendipity of landing a job where eagerness won over experience, to the pivot from redundancy to entrepreneurship—each chapter marking the contours of a life less ordinary.

As we peel back the layers of work-life balance, Charlotte illustrates how she's crafted a family vibe in her business, all while championing community ties and fostering collaborations that extend far beyond The Boundary's beautiful spaces. Her journey is a colorful tapestry of 'blinkinies' and bridal gowns, of joyous community events and the quest for personal fulfillment. 13 Mar 2024Beyond The Barbershop01:08:49

When the buzz of clippers falls silent, the story of a man's journey from a dreamer to an achiever begins to echo. That's the tale of Dean Gleeson, master barber and entrepreneurial spirit behind Mengo Male Grooming, who joins us to share the trials and triumphs of melding artistry with the precision of barbering. Tracing Dean's path, we uncover how a creative youth with a flair for the arts sculpted a niche in the evolving landscape of male grooming—a tale of resilience, fatherhood, and the drive that turns challenges into opportunities.

Barbering isn't just about a quick trim; it's an evolving canvas where modern style meets traditional technique. In the heart of Leigh on Sea, Dean's hands craft more than hairstyles; they weave the fabric of a community. This episode peels back the layers of a profession that's as much about the conversations in the chair as the hair on the floor. It's an intimate look at how social media has shaped client expectations and the delicate dance between promoting self-acceptance and tapping into the desire to maintain a certain image.

But it's not all about fades and shaves; it's about the balance that every entrepreneur, parent, and individual strives to achieve. Dean opens up about the complexities of partnership in business, the struggle to maintain health amidst professional demands, and the perpetual quest for harmony between work and family. As we navigate the intricacies of growing a business without losing the personal touch, we celebrate the vibrancy of local enterprise, and the shared dream that fuels the spirit of innovation in Leigh on Sea’s entrepreneurs. Join us for a reflection on the art of cutting hair and carving out a life that's not only successful but deeply fulfilling.

20 Mar 2024The Path to Getting Published01:32:31

Every writer's journey is etched with the ink of persistence and passion, and my good friend Paul Schiernecker is no exception. Grab a cozy spot as we traverse the landscape of Paul's writing odyssey, from the pressures of youthful promise to the crowning moment of a publishing deal. With the authenticity of long-term friendship, we peel back the layers of what it means to chase the literary dream while juggling the pragmatic demands of a day job. Paul's candid recount of his path to authorship is a beacon for every closeted writer yearning to emerge and claim their space on the bookshelves.

As the conversation unwinds, laughter mingles with introspection—Paul's foray into comedy not only serves as an outlet for his creativity but also as an unexpected weapon against anxiety. We share tales from the front lines of stand-up gigs and the shared resilience within his comedy troupe, drawing parallels between humour and healing. Our dialogue then takes an intriguing turn, with a sneak peek into Paul's novel, "The Counterfeiter of Auschwitz." This unique blend of history and humor reveals the depth of Paul's craft and the influences that shape his storytelling, offering listeners a glimpse into the essence of blending genres with grace.

Amidst the personal narratives and laughter, we don't shy away from the broader strokes of the creative canvas. We tackle the encroaching shadows of AI on the arts, discussing the implications for the future of writing and authenticity. Yet, the episode comes full circle with a celebration of our roots in Southend’s burgeoning creative hub, where independent spirits fuel a renaissance of arts and entrepreneurship. So join us to uncover the joys, the struggles, and the unending pursuit of creation, all wrapped up in the warmth of community and the unwavering belief in following one's creative compass.

Mentioned Poem (@ 01:06:04)
"Monday morning, the sun does rise, And people scarce believe their eyes. From near and far, a wondrous scene, The autumn skies, a sight unseen. Through golden clouds, they steer, they near, The people point, the people cheer. Above their heads, a flying crease, Six hundred, seven hundred geese. A flock of birds, a dimpled dish, Courageous girl, a special mish. She leads them all, behind they fly, A statement clear across the sky. Swooping now, a driven fleet, Closing in on Ormond Street. At first a whisper, then a roar: "We're with you Hattie, this is war!"

05 Mar 2025JobsWorth Reshare - Pens, Paper and Purpose.00:54:34

In the first of our JobsWorth Reshare episodes we revisit my brother Luke's interview, first shared on the 13th December 2023.

19 Mar 2025JobsWorth Reshare - Is Minimalism For Me?00:28:02

We're halfway through our JobsWorth Reshare episodes and this week we're revisiting a conversation I had with professional writer Charlie Brown back in December 2023. Is Minimalism For Me remains one our most downloaded episodes and first time out this topic really struck a chord. For some, it was genuinely a game changer. Let us know what you think.

Craving a life less ordinary? Imagine a lifestyle not defined by possessions but by intention and simplicity. This promise is at the heart of our conversation with special guest Charlie Brown. Together, we break down the misconceptions surrounding minimalism and offer a fresh perspective on this intriguing lifestyle. Charlie opens up about her own minimalist journey, offering a counterpoint to societal pressures and proving that minimalism is not a privilege, but a choice.

We venture into our own experiences with minimalism, recounting the challenges and rewards of letting go and living unconventionally. From the pressures of societal norms to the joys of decluttering, we examine the essence of a minimalist lifestyle. In this episode, we'll share practical advice and personal anecdotes – a survival guide of sorts for those ready to tread the minimalist path. So, tune in as we redefine success and fulfillment, and prepare to be inspired.

26 Mar 2025JobsWorth Reshare - Mum, Mud and Motivation01:05:15

On this weeks JobsWorth Reshare episode we're going back to our very first episode and a conversation I had with my mum, Lisa Hawker, back in September 2023.

Enjoy.

02 Apr 2025JobsWorth Reshare - Breaking Boundaries01:27:47

For our penultimate Reshare episode we're going back to a conversation I had in March 2024 with Charlotte Debond-Sayer, founder of Essex based wedding and events venue, The Boundary.

Join us for an inspiring listen that offers a peek into the vibrant spirit of an entrepreneur balancing the books and bedtime stories with equal finesse.

It’s my turn to be on the receiving end of a barrage of questions and there’s only one person I’d trust with the job. My little brother Luke Adam Hawker.

This conversation was super special. As well as talking about our careers, what it takes to start a business and how we juggle work and fatherhood, we also explore the importance of creativity (regardless of what you do for a living), my struggles with mental health, my discomfort with what I do for a living and how I’m slowly overcoming it (13 years in) and the pros and cons of stereotypes.

Luke and I also go to war (kinda) on why I’m so against the word ‘passion’ when it comes to work.

We laugh, I cry, our Mum walks in half way through unannounced. It's a riot.

A HUGE thank you to Luke for putting so much effort into coming up with the questions as well as for reaching out to some special guests and getting them involved too.

Please enjoy this conversation with...errr...me 🤷

23 Apr 2025JobsWorth - Ralph Tait01:05:53

This week I'm sitting down with Ralph Tait, founder and owner of The Hatch in Leigh on Sea.

The Hatch has become a bit of a haven for me over the past couple of years. You'll regularly find me there a couple of times a week hunched over my laptop while knocking back some of their incredible coffee.

As a result, I've got to know Ralph a little better and it was a complete no brainer to ask him if he'd be happy to come onto the show.

We chat about how The Hatch came to be, how Ralph juggles running a coffee shop while also working in consulting, and the lessons both worlds have taught him along the way. We also touch on what it’s like to put your own stamp on a space that means so much to so many...thanks in large part to the work of his mum, Lynn, and the legacy she built in the local community.

This was an absolute pleasure. Ralph is a great communicator and, while we may have to fact check some of the dates **adds to to-do list** his knowledge of The Old Foundry, where The Hatch is located, as well as the surrounding area is top draw (Dan Snow's History Hit eat your heart out).

Enjoy... Ralph Tait.

P.S. A huge thank you to Ralph for not only being a great guest but also for letting us use his incredible space to record some future episodes.
