Lucy has been brave enough to travel around Europe and train at a Jiu Jitsu school in Lisbon, not knowing the language and walking fresh in off the street. However, we have the language of jiu jitsu and this seems to connect us all, around the world!

23 Mar 2024 | E021: Barbara Pellegrino - Blue Belt | 00:36:11
Barbara Pellegrino is a Double Gold Medalist in the English Open at Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, whose approach is 'one fight at a time'. Her advice is to just go for it in competing and to keep going! Whilst her journey hasn't always been easy, she has stuck to it and stayed dedicated, and now today she is a Gracie Barra Ambassador.
We talk about starting training during the Covid lockdowns, and doing solo drills, but not the solo drill we may know, solo drills as in miming the moves without a partner! Barbara demonstrates learning moves only a week before a competition, thriving on adrenalin, and pulling off new moves successfully during competition. Take great energy from this episode, Barbara is inspirational.

30 Mar 2024 | E022: Giada Pedretti - Purple Belt | 00:31:43
Giada Pedretti is a purple belts who has been training for 6 years but started in 2015 at the age of 15, however the road has been a little bumpy. Her career started Japanese Jiu Jitsu in Italy, and transitioned to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu after a friend suggested she try it. The decision was an easy one at that stage. Making Jiu Jitsu a long term career is completely Giada's passion. Having visited Nottingham on a school excursion in 2017, she decided it was the place for her, and I discover why!
We talk about making Brazilian Jiu Jitsu a career, and the balance of education and training. Giada's passion and commitment is to be admired. The benefit of the mindset we learn through jiu jitsu is a life skill in itself. Listen out for some great competition advice.

21 Sep 2024 | E045: Michael D'aguiar - Black Belt | 00:34:17
Michael is a Black Belt, and started his return to competition with a very smooth inside heel hook at Impact Invitational, albeit injured. He is also Head Coach at Gracie Barra Salisbury. The return to competition was something Michael wanted to do, to test the quality of his Jiu Jitsu, regardless of any barrier on the day.
Being a smaller guy, Michael has built up a personal brand and positive reputation that far exceeds his physical persona. He has deep belief in his jiu jitsu, and brings such positivity to the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Michael talks of his time off the mats, and how he overcame the challenges of life, coming back stronger and supporting others as much as his own wellbeing.

02 Nov 2024 | E049: Danielle Sanniti - Blue Belt | 00:41:30
Dani's journey of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu started in Qatar shortly after her Mother suddenly passed away. Taking steps to grieve, heal and grow through the art of Jiu Jitsu is something many of us turn to. One of Dani's friends during this time took her to her very first class, that she describes as 'Jiu Jitsu Heaven'!
Working through grief for Dani brought her a physical connection that was able to reconnect her emotionally to the present moment, on the mats. What comes through is that we don't know that we all need Jiu Jitsu until we start training. Dani now supports her club as an Assistant Coach, working with kids classes which echoes her teaching career, giving back to the community.

Ian Butler is fresh off of Polaris 30, having brought his family to London for his debut at Polaris Professional here in the UK. He fought to the very end, and very much delivered the joy of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Ian reflects on his match performance and like many of us, being stuck in a really tight closed guard!
Reflecting on every match you participate in, win or learn, you have to refresh and learn from feedback, video footage and anything else is so important for your personal progress. Ian talks of the hours learning from every match that he participates in.
Ian comes from humble beginnings, and is now growing his wrestling gyms in the US. He wants to continue to build a legacy beyond his fighting career that supports young people's education on and off the mats. Respect for culture, being tough, and knowing you don't have to take the step of life alone, is fundamental in the art.

22 Feb 2025 | E065: Vanessa English - Black Belt | 00:37:57
Vanessa English, aka 'Jiu jitsu Woman' is taking things more slowly, as she is recovering from her latest ACL surgery. This isn't her first rodeo, and she shares some fantastic advice on how to prepare and recover in the most effective way.
She is a woman on a mission to return to competing, and sparring with intensity, despite her surgeries, tattoos and a not so recent growth into adulthood! We talk about the intensity of competition, and the variety of intensity as one progresses through the belts.
There are so many laughs as well as weirdness in this episode, it really is one to listen to until the end where we go back to the very beginning of Vanessa's story with dance and self-defence.

Working on your mindset, and focusing on gratitude is of high priority to Rich and his continued success in competitive Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. When there are elements of your jiu jitsu game that you can't do, for one reason or another, maybe injury, Rich suggests working skills to focus on what you're good at, and continue to make improvements in this area.

08 Mar 2025 | E067: Georgina Victoria Stanciu - White Belt | 00:45:15
Georgina Stanciu is based in Spain and, wow, what an incredible woman! Georgina shares starting Brazilian Jiu Jitsu when her son started around a year ago, and as well as growing her skills, she has overcome the fear of people touching her, to the point of hating having beauty treatments, and her hair done. She now gets completely undone regularly with training and preparing competing in the sport.
We didn't acknowledge Georgina's pup Macken (named by Georgina's son, after Chris Macken @nogisus_of_newazareth) in the background, but he clearly makes himself heard!
We talk about making our Jiu Jitsu games our own, and encourage any woman in their forties of fifties to start training. Overcoming pain, and hormone imbalances that women go through with Menopause is a really important topic, and Georgina talks of her time being bed-ridden, getting some medical support with HRT, getting started with martial arts and making it a lifelong hobby. This is a treasure trove of an episode, where you will learn a lot whoever you are.

Taya Jones is a Yellow Belt, and a Gracie Barra Ambassador for 2025. Taya joins me with her Mum, Danielle who sounds like she does a great deal for Taya, together with her Dad. We talk about competition, and competing in a kids Absolute with all different weights and belts. Taya talks of the challenges in fighting competitors who are smaller and faster than her.
Danielle, her Mum shares the story of the application process, and the seminar when Taya was told that she had been selected to be a Gracie Barra Ambassador. Taya is so humble in her approach, not just for promotions but for life in general, she also has a great deal of determination. As a parent, one might feel some reservation around a child taking part in martial arts but when it is something that child talks about continuously, with passion and enthusiasm you can only support them following and wholeheartedly encouraging their dreams.
Taya talks of her love for wrestling, and watching title matches with her Dad. She also shares the joy she had at being able to master a double-leg takedown against him in her very first trial session of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. She shares her inspiration in Ffion Davies and Helena Crevar, and Taya also talks of training partners in Lillie Marlow and Frankie Lee Monaghan whose episodes are also upcoming in the Yellow Belt Series.
