The Wine Conversation - The Mâconnais with Jasper Morris MW & Sarah Kemp
Jasper Morris explores the Mâconnais in our latest 10-Minute Masterclass. It is situated 50 miles to the south of Beaune and 50 miles north of Lyon. There are a thousand producers growing grapes, but a lot of their grapes go to the Cave Cooperatives. The soil is a clay-limestone mix, as is true for the Côte d’Or. Jasper explains that if it is called Mâcon it is almost certain to be chardonnay, and it certainly is if it is called Vire-Clessé or Pouilly-Fuissé. There is a little Pinot Noir in the region, which would be bottled as Bourgogne Rouge, and if Gamay is planted it will be called Mâcon with the village name attached.
Regarding the taste of Mâcon, Jasper explains that there are three styles. Mâcon bought from a supermarket is bottled in considerable volumes, usually fermented in stainless steel, and is fresh, cheerful, mineral-driven, gulping wine, which can be very satisfying. The artisanal producers tend to age in barrel and the wines show a little more substance, and clearly have a more southern feel than the wines of the Côte Chalonnaise. “Pouilly-Fuissé, you can get up to 14 percent alcohol without it feeling too heavy, as they all have a thread of acidity underneath,” he notes. And then, Viré-Clessé can be more full-bodied, everything there is on a mini-plateau with several streams. You can also have a little residual sugar, a more late-harvest style that’s unique in Burgundy.
The big negociants have their own holdings or good relationships with the growers. In Pouilly-Fuissé, Jasper recommends looking out for Domaine Ferret, owned by the House of Jadot but independently run, Domaine Barraud, Château de Beauregard, Domaine Jacques Saumaize, Domaine Saumaize-Michelin, and Olivier Merlin, whilst over In Pouilly-Vinzelles, it’s the Bret Brothers. In Viré-Clessé, Domaine Thevenet, Domaine André Bonhomme and Domaine Jean-Marie Chaland. For Mâcon and Mâcon-Villages, the co-operatives and small growers, as well as the interlopers from the north who wish to make chardonnay at more affordable prices, such as Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Lafon.
Jasper’s insider tip is to look for the premier crus in Pouilly-Fuissé which are already established, and the about-to-be-established premier crus in Pouilly-Vinzelles and Pouilly-Loché. “Amazing for the appellation,” Jasper notes. His obscure fact? The village in the Mâconnais called Chardonnay is not named after the grape. It was recorded in the 17th century, when the grapes grown there were red."

The Wine Conversation - Gevrey-Chambertin with Jasper Morris MW & Sarah Kemp
Jasper Morris MW, author of “Inside Burgundy” and the award-winning website www.insideburgundy.com, takes a deep dive into Gevrey-Chambertin in our latest episode of 10-Minute Masterclass. Gevrey-Chambertin is at the northern end of the Côte de Nuits, on the edge of the city of Dijon. Jasper notes that there are 20 well-known producers, but he estimates there are 50 overall. The appellation covers 400 hectares, or 1,000 acres of vineyards, and consists of nine grands crus. In the past, Gevrey-Chambertin was known for its deeply coloured, powerful and structured red wines, but today the flavours are much more nuanced.
The appellation is affected by the alluvial soil deposits left along an ancient river course, and it is the only village which has a sizeable number of vineyards east of the main road, as the alluvial soil is found there. Jasper explains that those who are at the southern end of the village and the eastern bit before the road tend to make wines which are red-fruited, with fresh strawberry aromatics that become quite savoury, but at the northern end the wines are slightly more concentrated, slightly deeper in colour. Of the nine grands crus, which are found on the upper and middle slopes, Chambertin is the most famous and has an amazing ageing ability.
His personal favourites include Latricières-Chambertin at the southern end, and at the northern end Ruchottes-Chambertin, which he finds is the lightest most delicate and elegant, and its neighbour Mazis-Chambertin, which is noted for its structure. The most famous of the premier cru vineyards is Clos St-Jacques, which goes for the same price as the grands crus. Jasper recommends Les Cazetiers, which has a fresh mineral feel to it, and at the southern end, Aux Combottes, which is surrounded by grands crus. The grape is solely Pinot Noir and the most famous name in the appellation is Domaine Armand Rousseau, which has the biggest holdings. Other names to look out for include two branches of the Trapet family, Domaine Trapet and Domaine Rossignol-Trapet, both biodynamic, Domaine Duroché, Domaine Fourrier, Domaine Bruno Clair, Domaine Drouhin-Laroze, Domaine Sylvie-Esmonin, Domaine Henri Magnien, and Domaine Henri Rebourseau, which has received an investment from Martin Bouygues of Château Montrose.
Jasper’s obscure fact is that Gevrey-Chambertin was the first village to hyphenate its best vineyard when in 1847 it changed its name from Gevrey-en-Montagne to Gevrey-Chambertin, which was its most famous vineyard."

The Wine Conversation - Volnay with Jasper Morris MW & Sarah Kemp
"Episode Summary: In our latest 10-Minute Masterclass, Jasper Morris MW, author of “Inside Burgundy,” takes a look at the appellation of Volnay, which is situated in the Côte de Beaune, a couple of villages south of Beaune itself. Historically, Jasper explains, Volnay has greater significance than most Côte d’Or villages, as the Dukes of Burgundy built a summer palace there – many of the vineyards have the title “Duc” in their name.
Volnay’s terroir is a mix of limestone and clay, but Jasper explains that Volnay is known for its more “active limestone, which means it comes through and gets into the vines itself and the wines, making them lighter, fresher and more perfumed.” There are more Premier Cru Volnay vineyard – 115 hectares, than Village Volnay, which has 98 hectares. The appellation runs from Pommard in the north to the south of Meursault, where the reds are known as Volnay Santenots.
Some of the most well-known vineyards are around the village: Clos des Ducs, Clos de la Caves des Ducs, Clos du Château des Ducs, and at the southern end above the main road, the D973, you have Clos des Chênes, and Taille Pieds, whilst below is one of the greatest, Cailleret (of which, someone in the 17th century said, “If you don’t have vines in Cailleret, then you don’t know what Volnay is.”)
There are not many producers in the village of Volnay itself, though some have vineyards there, such as Domaine Lafon. The name you will come across most will be the Rossignol family, in one form or another. Blue-chip names found there include Marquis d’Angerville, Domaine Michel Lafarge, Domaine de la Pousse d’Or, and Domaine De Montille. Jasper’s tip for up-and-coming producers are Thomas Bouley and his cousin Kieran Bouley, as well as Georges Glantenay, and Bernard and Thierry Glantenay. “The one I like a lot and is excellent value and under the radar, is Domaine Buffet,” Jasper concludes.
Volnay produces wines slightly lighter in colour, but “it’s the perfume that makes Volnay so special,” Jasper notes. He advises, “one of the things I find particularly interesting is when the wines are young Volnay seems nice, or very nice, in the hands of a great practitioner, but if you happen to have a bottle of 30 to 40 years of age and you drink it in a mix of really top wines from the Côte de Nuits, Grands Crus from famous villages, the Volnay really holds up, it is more exciting and hedonistic with age.”
Vintages to look out for: “2017 is absolutely delicious now,” he says. Jasper also suggests 2007,2010 and 2011 for being very attractive now. He also reveals “the years ending in nine are particularly good in Volnay.”"

The Wine Conversation - Chablis Premiers Crus with Jasper Morris MW & Sarah Kemp
"Summary: Jasper Morris MW, author of “Inside Burgundy” and www.insideburgundy.com, takes a deep dive into Chablis premiers crus. He explains that Chablis is based in northern Burgundy in the Yonne département. The river Serein cuts through the limestone plateau, which consists of Portlandian limestone, which is very hard, and is found on slopes that have not eroded much, and Kimmeridgian limestone, which formed when the sea receded, and is full of marine fossils. The best vineyards, Jasper believes, are on Kimmeridgian limestone, which gives Chablis its very particular taste.
The premiers crus appellation was formed after World War II; today there are 41 different premiers crus classified, but you only ever see a few very regularly on the label – the others are subdivisions of the better-known names.
The one big divide, in terms of style and taste, depends on which bank of the river Serein you are on, Jasper points out. “On the left bank, the west side of the river and of Chablis itself, you have rolling hills, the first roll at the southern end gives you a premier cru called Montmains, and the second one gives you Vaillons. Both have plenty of subdivisions, and here you get really steely wines, white fruit style, lots of this marine element, and these are the sorts of wines which are classic with oysters. You also have newer names like Vau de Vey and Côte de Léchet.”
Jasper continues “On the east side, the vineyards are south-west facing, which means they get the afternoon sun, which means they are richer in style, yellow fruit. Here you find Mont de Milieu, Montée de Tonnere, Vaulorent and Fourchaume. These are slightly fleshier wines, which you might want with a river fish or even white meat.”
The style of course depends on how the wines are made as well as the terroir, and Jasper discusses the different use of oak and stainless steel. His favourite premiers crus include Vaucoupin in Chichée, for its steely white fruit character, all the different parts of Vaillons, and, for a richer wine, Montée de Tonerre.
The two most famous wine domaines are Raveneau and Dauvissat, both of whom are expensive on the secondary market, but Jasper advises that, if you’re dining in Chablis, you will find them at reasonable percentage mark-ups. In addition, you have William Fèvre and Samuel Billaud.
Up-and-coming producers he recommends include Roland Lavantureux in the north of the region, Clement Lavallée, discovered earlier this year, who he believes shows real promise, Thomas Ventoura, Fabien of Jean Dauvissat &Fils and Edouard and Eleni Vocoret.
Almost all of Chablis shows good value, he says, “but I do believe that the premiers crus are the sweet spot for quality/price.” Vintages to look out for: 2022 is going to be a first-class vintage, 2020 is a fine year but shows the heat a tiny bit more, 2019 if you want a more voluptuous style, 2017 lovely now and 2014 continues to get better.

The Wine Conversation – Morey-St-Denis with Jasper Morris MW & Sarah Kemp
Jasper Morris MW, author of “Inside Burgundy” and www.insideburgundy.com, takes a deep dive into the appellation of Morey-St-Denis, which is situated in the Côte de Nuits between the villages of Chambolle-Musigny in the south and Gevrey-Chambertin to the north.
He explains how its terroir is similar to Gevrey-Chambertin, with its underlay of limestone which stretches through to Chambolle-Musigny. The main grape is Pinot Noir, but there is a little white wine produced, Chardonnay and Aligoté. Morey-St-Denis is the only village in the Côte d’Or where Aligoté is permitted. Jasper reveals the role that Domaine Ponsot had in allowing the grape to be included in the appellation rules.
What does it taste like? “I like to think of it as a slightly more savoury, slightly more wilder type of wine….if Morey wasn’t quite so small, I think it would be more famous.”
Jasper discusses the famous grands crus; Clos des Lambrays, Clos de la Roche, Clos St Denis and Clos de Tart. The Morey premiers crus span the commune on the lower slopes behind the grands crus, but another small band lies just above the grands crus. The village wines are on the lower slopes, where there is more clay.
Producers Jasper recommends looking out for include Clos des Lambrays, Clos de Tart, Domaine Arlaud, Domaine Castagnier, Domaine Dujac, Domaine Robert Groffier, Domaine Hubert Liginier, Virgile-Lignier-Michelot, Domaine Perrot-Minot, Domaine Taupenot-Merme, Cecile Tremblay and Domaine Ponsot. His tip for one to watch is Domaine Stéphane Magnien.
Jasper’s obscure fact – the vignerons of Morey-St-Denis are known as the loups de Morey (the wolves of Morey).

Another episode with Sarah Kemp at The Wine Conversation.
Jasper Morris MW, author of “Inside Burgundy” and the brilliant website www.insideburgundy.com, explores the Côte Chalonnaise. The vineyards start where the Côte d’Or ends, with the valley of the River Dheune, just south of Santenay. Its terroir is clay and limestone, but the landscape feels different, as there is no one escarpment, and the land is more wooded, creating a more varied terrain.
The main grapes are Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Aligoté, but there is also a small amount of Gamay and Pinot Blanc. There are five villages, Bouzeron, Rully, Mercurey, Givry, Montagny and two sub-classes of Bourgone: Bourgogne-Côte Chalonnaise and Bourgogne-Côte de Couchois.
Bouzeron has plenty of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay on its east-facing slope, but on its west-facing slope you find Aligoté – as Jasper explains, “Aligoté has been Bouzeron’s calling card,” and in 1998 they decided to create an appellation just for Bourzeron and Aligoté. It most renowned producers are Domaine A&P de Villaine, Maison Chanzy and Domaine Champs de Themis.
Rully makes sparkling wine and some good Aligoté, but is mainly known for its Chardonnay. Jasper explains, “The wines are not particularly long-lasting but they don’t need to be, because they are so lovely.” The producers to look out for are P&M Jacqueson, Domaine de la Folie, while Jasper picks out Vincent Dureuil-Janthial as the biggest star.
Domaine Faiveley put Mercurey on the map, and Mercurey remains the most famous of the villages. This is red-wine territory, with the wines being more structured and more tannic, though as Jasper notes, this is changing a little with new Pinot Noir plant material. Château de Chamiray is a major player in the area and a name to look for is Domaine Bruno Lorenzon.
Givry is similar to Mercurey, in that it is red-wine country, with only 15% whites produced. Producers to seek out include Domaine du Cellier aux Moines, which Jasper highly recommends, and Domaine Joblot, Domaine Thénard, François Lupp and his cousins, Domaine Ragot and Domaine Laurent Mouton.
Montagny is a white-wine-only appellation. Jasper describes its taste as different from other Burgundian whites, more like “crushed oyster shells like Chablis, though not so iodine.” His names to look out for include Cave de Buxy, the largest producer in the Côte Chalonnaise, and the negociant Louis Latour has considerable holdings, the star producer is Domaine Stéphane Aladame, but there is a raft of new producers including Domaine Laurent Cognard, Domaine Feuillat-Juillot, Domaine Berthenet.

This is the first zoom event offered under the JMIB Live banner. It is the first part of a series looking at some of the crucial themes in Burgundy.
There are no wines to be tasted except what you choose to open alongside, nor interviews with producers enthusing about the joys of their own wines.
Instead, Jasper will be analysing the underlying causes of the Premature Oxidation phenomenon, looking at the timeline over the last 25 years since the first affected vintage (1995):
Where do we stand now?
Do we really know all the causes?
Have we definitely found the answers?
What can we expect in the future?

My & Jane's Favourites Outside of Burgundy & Bordeaux
I admit I need a bit of Riesling to tune up with, and a firm favourite remains cabernet franc from the Loire. For a special treat then the unique wines of Vega Sicilia beckon:
Jane has gone for an unusual ‘field blend’ white wine from the brilliant Telmo Rodriguez at his home estate of Remelluri in Rioja. For the reds, a producer that is pretty much always in her wine rack at home, Stéphane Ogier. Hard to narrow it down to one choice from this excellent northern Rhône producer, but in the end she selected his Côte Blonde single parcel Syrah, Le Lancement. Over into northern Italy for her final choice and GD Vajra, another producer where it is almost impossible to pick one from their exceptional range but hard to fault the Bricco delle Viole; a 7 hectare vineyard that delivers classic Barolo:

17 Dec 2020: To celebrate a year of Bordeaux and Burgundy #67athome tastings with Jasper Morris MW and Jane Anson, we thought we would end 2020 with a lineup of some of the best wines from both regions, from iconic and well known and smaller cult choices, with Jasper and Jane introducing their choices.
Jane is kicking things off with two exceptional Bordeaux dry whites, one classic in the shape of Mission Haut-Brion Blanc 2013 alongside a newer creation Cos d’Estournel Blanc 2016. The reds start with two cult wines that show the kind of terroir-driven intuitive winemaking that is often associated with Burgundy rather than Bordeaux – the biodynamic Château le Puy cuvée Barthélemy 2010, followed by the iconic l’Eglise-Clinet from Pomerol in the 2000 vintage. To finish off, two great classics in Léoville las Cases 2001, reputed as being one of their greatest ever vintages, and an unquestionable 20th century wine star the 1996 Mouton Rothschild.
2013 Château La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc, Pessac-Leognan
2016 Château Cos d’Estournel Blanc
2010 Château Le Puy Barthélemy
2000 Château L’Eglise-Clinet, Pomerol
2001 Château Leoville Las Cases 2eme Grand Cru Classe, Saint-Julien
1996 Château Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac 1er Grand Cru Classé
I have chosen a classical Chablis from the outstanding, but undersung producer, Samuel Billaud, followed by a mature Meursault from Jean-Marc Roulot: only a ‘village’ wine, but what a vineyard! The red selection starts in the Côte de Beaune – a youthful Savigny from Domaine Bize and a wine that has already found favour during 67 Pall Mall zooms – altogether too good a wine to leave out – the Comte Armand’s Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 2010. Those who like stems in their wines will be excited by Domaine Dujac’s Clos de la Roche from the same vintage, before we finish with one of Burgundy’s great classic wines: Clos St Jacques from Domaine Armand Rousseau. The 1999 vintage should be just about ready!
2017 Samuel Billaud Mont de Milieu, Chablis Premier Cru
2010 Domaine Roulot Meursault Les Tessons Clos de Mon Plaisir Cote de Beaune
2018 Savigny-les-Beaune, 1er Cru Aux Vergelesses, Domaine Simon Bize
2010 Pommard, Clos des Epeneaux, 1er Cru Domaine du Comte Armand
2010 Clos de la Roche, Grand Cru, Domaine Dujac
1999 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St. Jacques, Domaine Armand Rousseau

The Future of Burgundy
01:20:08
21 April 2020: With the 2018 vintage suggesting for the first time that Global Warming might be causing some real problems in the time ahead if intelligent steps are not taken on the viticulture front, this zoom webinar investigates which parts of Burgundy might do well under warmer conditions, and who the young stars of the future might be.
Alongside this, the team at 67 Pall Mall had organised for 200+ participants in the webinar to receive samples of 6 different wines, each one of which illustrates something to look out for in the upcoming future. Superb organisation!
Wines in order:
Pouilly-Fuissé, En Bertilionne, Domaine du Roc des Boutires, 2017
Saint-Aubin, 1er Cru, En Remilly, Domaine Bachelet-Monnot, 2017

Chablis
01:16:32
2 May 2020: Chablis is a gem, known to many but ignored by many more. Maybe the sea of mass market Chablis – and indeed misrepresentations of Chablis over the years – has hidden from view the joy which this region can bring, in authentic hands. Though we shall discuss Chablis as a whole, from Petit Chablis to Grand Cru, the tasting will feature 6** 1er cru wines from exciting producers, both classic names and some unconventional newcomers. What really counts? Soil, the exposure of the slope, or how you make the wine?
Wines in order:
2015 Chablis, 1er Cru ” Vaucoupin” Château de Béru
2015 Chablis, 1er Cru, Vaillons, Dauvissat Camus
2017 Chablis 1er Cru, Montmains, Moreau Naudet
2016 Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre, Louis Michel
2015 Domaine Francois Raveneau Butteaux
2015 Chablis 1er Cru Vaulorent, William Fèvre

With or Without Stems
01:16:47
9 May 2020: Red Burgundy: To destem or not to destem, that is the question. The latest in our line of top level Burgundy webinars will review three pairs of wines with each pair showing differing approaches to the complex question of what to put in your fermentation tanks: just the berries or the whole bunch of grapes, stems and all. Even the great producers have opposite views, though sadly we have decided not to put Henri Jayer up against Mme Bize Leroy this time round.
Wine Samples:

2016 Vosne-Romanée, Les Hautes Maizieres, Vieilles Vignes, Domaine Bruno Clavelier
2014 Volnay, 1er Cru, Les Taillepieds, Domaine de Montille

2015 Red Burgundy: Where Does It Rank in the Hall of Fame?
01:19:52
23 May 2020: 2015 is certainly a candidate for an ‘All Time Great’ rating. But just how good are the red wines of Burgundy in 2015? Do they combine the power of 2005 with the grace of 2010? Do they have the potential to develop extra depth and layers of flavour with age. To try to answer these questions Jasper looked at this highly touted vintage through the lens of six samples from different parts of the Côte.
Wine Samples:
2015 Marsannay, Les Longeroies, Domaine Jean Fournier
2015 Maranges, Sur Le Chêne, Domaine Chevrot et Fils
2015 Corton, Grand Cru, Les Bressandes, Domaine Ravaut
2015 Corton Les Bressandes, Grand Cru, Domaine Tollot Beaut

01:20:59
5 June 2020: With only Corton-Charlemagne and the Montrachets in the grand cru bracket, we need to test out the options among the finest 1ers crus which can often be just as rewarding and rather better value for money. We have selected one wine from each of six villages – including a rarity from the Côte de Nuits – to test out this theory.

2017 Saint-Aubin, 1er Cru, Clos de la Chatenière, Domaine Hubert Lamy
2015 Puligny-Montrachet, 1er Cru, Les Combettes, Domaine Jean Marc Boillot

Bonneau du Martray
01:13:26
15 June 2020: Myths about Corton-Charlemagne abound, but it is accepted that part of the vineyard did once belong to Charlemagne, King of the Franks, Holy Roman Emperor, reformer of education, father of Western Europe and famously, a wine lover…
Almost unique among Burgundy growers for only producing grand cru wines, Domaine Bonneau du Martray owns 11 hectares of vines on the famous hill of Corton, one of the largest holdings of grand cru vines of any Burgundy producer. The vast majority of the vines are chardonnay with just 1.5 hectares of pinot noir, making Corton-Charlemagne and Corton respectively.
In this webinar, we explore some key vintages of this outstanding producer with Thibault Jacquet, Director, joining us live from Domaine Bonneau du Martray.
Domaine Bonneau du Martray, Grand Cru, wine Samples:

Biodynamic Burgundy
01:09:58
11 June 2020: Is this the new mainstream? Or are biodynamic practitioners “Out where the buses don’t run”? Certainly a number of cult domaines have espoused this philosophy of grape growing and winemaking.
To talk us through how the biodynamic movement has developed in Burgundy, I have selected six wines from among the most noted producers, so we can judge for ourselves what biodynamics really means in wine.

In Conversation with Benjamin Leroux
01:15:07
18 June 2020: Benjamin Leroux is one of the new generation Burgundian winemakers, who has made a big impression in a relatively short time. Benjamin, the gifted manager/winemaker of Domaine Comte Armand launched his own label with the 2007 vintage and works from a brand-new winery in the centre of Beaune (just off the Boulevard) that he shares with Dominique Lafon and two other wine growers.
Benjamin’s wines stand out for their terrific quality – the sense of opulence is vivid, yet terroir is evident above all else. Burgundy expert, Jasper Morris MW, is in conversation with Benjamin for this insightful tasting.
Wine Samples:
2017 Benjamin Leroux, Bourgogne Blanc
2017 Benjamin Leroux, Meursault

Wine Blast - Burgundy in 2021 with Jasper Morris
00:47:09
“To kick off 2021, we dive right into the fascinating, frustrating, compelling wine world that is Burgundy. Iconic – certainly. Over-priced? Plausibly. At great risk from climate change? Undoubtedly. We explore these issues and more across two special episodes – and in this first part we quiz our fellow Master of Wine and renowned Burgundy expert, Jasper Morris, as well as buyer Rebecca Palmer from Corney & Barrow, agents for Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (among other things). We give our summary on the 2019 vintage, which is currently going on sale, explore how to find good value, the new generation, alternatives to Burgundy and biodynamics, all in the time in takes to sink a fine bottle of Passetoutgrains. Or Chambertin.” – Wine Blast with Susie & Peter: Burgundy in 2021 Part 1

Gevrey Clos St-Jacques in 2017
01:12:11
23 July 2020: Whenever the question is asked:
Which 1er Cru vineyards in Burgundy might be promoted to Grand Cru? Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St-Jacques is always cited among the very first names due for promotion.
What makes it even more intriguing is that there are just 5 producers, and their holdings all run up and down the slope parallel to each other. It is rare to be able to sample all five from the same vintage at the same time to admire and contrast the different style of wine-making.
Join Jasper Morris MW for this in-depth view of Clos St-Jacques through the lens of the attractive and accessible 2017 vintage.
Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St-Jacques, Wine Samples:

Top White Burgundy – Montrachet & friends
01:14:32
30 July 2020: I lead us through each of the different Montrachet grands crus, each with its own character as decided by its place on the slope and what is going on below the ground.
We delve into the detail of vintage and vigneron distinctions to complete this overview of White Burgundy’s finest hillside. The session is rounded out by a taste of one of the great vintages of Bonneau du Martray’s Corton-Charlemagne, a vintage which was not shown during the zoom dedicated to the domaine.

Pouilly-Fuissé
01:09:54
6 August 2020: The most dynamic white wine appellation in Burgundy at the moment is Pouilly-Fuissé. There has been a surge in the number of top flight producers at work, perhaps encouraged by the up-coming classification of 1ers crus. I take us through the characteristics of the different villages, which make up the appellation, outline which vineyards are about to be ranked 1er cru and illustrate just why Pouilly-Fuissé deserves to be back in the limelight.
Wine Samples:
2016 Joseph Burrier Château de Beauregard, Vers Cras
2017 Domaine J.A. Ferret, Hors Classe Les Ménétrieres

Grand Crus of Morey St-Denis
01:13:54
13 August 2020: Time to take a good look at the very best of Morey St Denis. Two wines from Clos de la Roche will face two from Clos St Denis: will producer or terroir lead the way? The two grand crus are intertwined but typically show quite different characters. Just as fascinating is the rivalry between Clos de Tart and Clos des Lambrays. For all these, I will be evaluating what role the winemaker plays and what we can attribute to the vineyard.
Wine Samples:
2009 Domaine des Lambrays, Clos des Lambrays, Grand Cru
2009 Domaine du Clos de Tart ‘Clos de Tart’ Grand Cru, Monopole
2009 Domaine Hubert Lignier, Clos de la Roche, Grand Cru

Understanding Corton
01:12:13
20 August 2020: If ever there was a misunderstood appellation in Burgundy, it must be Corton. So much wine classified as Grand Cru, so many different styles. Much of it is very good wine, not all of it deserves to be Grand Cru. But if you study the appellation in detail, you will find the wine to suit you, and often at very fair pricing. You will not be disappointed if you tune in to this masterclass.
Wine Samples:
2014 Louis Jadot Corton-Pougets Domaine des Héritiers

24 August 2020: Once in a while a vintage comes along which stands out just that little bit more. It is not always so obvious for white Burgundy, but a clear favourite for the vintage of the last decade in white must be: 2014! Beaujolais: Moulin-à-Vent
01:10:32
8 Oct 2020: The most powerful of the Beaujolais crus and the most age-worthy is surely Moulin-à-Vent, a wine which can seem positively Burgundian as it ages. It has also caught the eye of various Côte d’Or producers in recent times, with many choosing to bottle different vineyards within the cru. This tasting will display the authority of top class single vineyard Moulin-à-Vent through the eyes and wines of both local and Burgundian producers.

Heading to the Back Country of the Côte de Beaune
01:12:21
27 Oct 2020: Why should we let the Montrachets, Meursault, Volnay and Pommard get all the glory? There are three delightful villages set in the valleys behind the main Côte which are delivering steadily more exciting wines as these cooler, formerly sometimes marginal, locations have been warming up. These days there is more flesh on the bones of the whites and reds of St-Romain and Auxey-Duresses, while the reds of Monthélie are also excellent value propositions, by Burgundy standards.
Wines Samples:
2017 Saint-Romain Blanc, Alain Gras
2017 Auxey-Duresses Blanc ‘Patience No 10’, Domaine Agnès Paquet
2018 Saint-Romain Rouge Combe Bazin, Domaine Henri & Gilles Buisson

Ancient Vines
01:04:30
12 Nov 2020: Just how important is vine age in Burgundy? Producers like to wax lyrical about their Vieilles Vignes and the received wisdom is that old vines make for more concentrated wines. We will test thus out with 6 beautiful Burgundies all made from vines planted before the Second World War, so at least 89 years old.
Wine Samples:
2015 Jean-Philippe Fichet, Meursault Les Gruyaches, Cote de Beaune

1855 Revisited: Tete de Cuvée Vineyards
01:09:04
17 Nov 2020: Dr Lavalle, author of a celebrated book about the Côte d’Or published in 1855, classified certain vineyards as Tete de Cuvée. Some of these were then and remain now very famous (Chambertin, Musigny, Romanée-Conti) but others have slipped somewhat out of the limelight. This tasting unites six vineyards up and down the Côte which Dr Lavalle rated as tete de Cuvée. Should we take them more seriously now?

Carel Voorhuis of Camille Giroud - Interviewed by Jasper
01:03:28
14 Jan 2021: Camille Giroud has tiny vineyard holdings in Beaune; otherwise relying on contracts from as far afield as Marsannay and Maranges, with particular strengths in Corton and the Gevrey Chambertin vineyards.
The quality of winemaking is consistent and very much in the modern, quality-oriented genre, although the practice of very gentle oak treatment and little racking continues, so that each cuvée shows a very individual character.
Camille-Giroud had a long history as a négociant that released powerful, very long-lived wines. In 2000, it was sold to a group of American investors, and David Croix installed as director, who, to put it simply, is a genius, and made a raft of great wines until his departure in 2016. His successor is Carel Voorhuis, who is crafting similarly pure, seductive and terroir-driven wines. The course charted for the Maison from its origin remains unchanged, whilst pursuing new projects implemented since 2002.
There are two parts to the Camille Giroud story. With the first begining in 1865 when the enterprising young Camille Giroud founded the small négociant firm which carries his name. He married late, as did his son, so by the end of the 20th century the company was still being run by the founder’s daughter-in-law and her two sons. The company’s motto in the later days was to make wine in as old-fashioned a way as possible: heavy extraction and very long barrel ageing. Part of the crop might be sold early on but most was kept back until it was ready to drink, which might be 30 or 40 years later. There were plenty of misses but also some extraordinarily fine wines. Almost all production was and still is red. Stocks of these old style wines still exist, with various 1976s still to be offered for sale.
In January 2002 the company was bought by an American consortium led by banker Joe Wender and winery owner Ann Colgin, and a new chapter began. The business is managed by winemaker/technical director David Croix (of the eponymous Domaine des Croix) with a major revamping of the winemaking facilities and especially replacement and renewal of the old barrels to make wines in a much purer, more modern style. The company also owns 1.20 hectares of vineyards, consisting of Hautes-Côtes de Beaune, Beaune premier cru Cras and Beaune premier cru Avaux.

Olivier Merlin and the New Generation
01:06:53
19 Jan 2021: Olivier wanted to feature the 2018 vintage including his new parcels in Clos de France, Côte Rôtie and En Crêches to introduce these wines and this was also the year that his two sons joined him at the Estate and interesting to now bring in the next generation. With the 2020 harvest behind him, Olivier is keen to talk of the challenges to come: “The virus has changed many things – the distribution of wine is just one problem,” he says. “But the real challenge is not that – we will continue to drink wine – the real challenge comes from global warming and the changes we make to slow its impact.”
He talks of rootstock changes, growing systems, canopy management, evolving wood strategies. There is – clearly – much to do. Will he retire soon? He laughs. “Does a musician stop playing music? I plan to continue as long as I can; making wine is not my job,” he says. “It is my passion.”
Three decades into his career, winemaker Olivier Merlin continues to be a leading light in the Mâconnais.
Winemaker Olivier Merlin has 35 vintages under his belt. He’s far from a “new” winemaker; in fact, he’s the most established producer in the Mâconnais, Burgundy’s most southerly terroir. And, while for some producers longevity could translate to complacency, nothing could be further from the truth for Olivier. He is the region’s most dynamic winemaker, and his dazzling cuvées continue to challenge conventional views about the Mâconnais’ reputation for humble wines. “Unlike my colleagues in the Mâconnais, we do everything by hand,” Olivier explains. “We might apply modern technology, but we make our wines in the same way as they were made 200 years ago.” He makes it sound simple, but at the heart of this approach is a commitment to meticulous winemaking – stripping everything back until what is left is the terroir. And, in Burgundy, terroir is everything.

Rugiens Rex? King of Pommard
01:02:21
4 Feb 2021: The leading candidate for promotion to grand cru in Pommard is Les Rugiens, the deepest and richest wine that Pommard can offer. The whole appellation is on an upswing, benefitting from global warming and the arrival of fresh blood in the village. Does the vineyard merit promotion? We can decide after tasting these six wines from some of the best known protagonists.
Wine Samples:
2016 Domaine Y Clerget Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens
2015 Domaine Faiveley Les Rugiens, Pommard Premier Cru
2010 Pommard, Les Rugiens-bas, 1er Cru, Domaine de Montille

Chassagne-Montrachet under the Microscope
01:05:49
11 Feb 2021: Are you a Puligny person or a Meursault fan? Hang on, what about Chassagne? The appellation is sometimes criticised because there is too much red wine territory which has been set to producing chardonnay, but the best parts of the village can make magical wines. I have chosen six of the finest producers of the village covering terroirs that compete with the best. Will vineyard or vigneron win out?
Wine Samples:
2017 Chassagne 1er Cru Boudriotte Domaine Ramonet
2017 Chassagne 1er Cru Morgeot Domaine Bernard Moreau
2017 Chassagne 1er Cru Vide-Bourses Thomas Morey

Gevrey-Chambertin Cazetiers
01:03:28
18 Feb 2021: Roll over Clos St-Jacques? Not necessarily, but in terms of value for money, Les Cazetiers is a strong contender for providing exceptional quality at a more-or-less fair price. The next door vineyard has a multitude of different plots, with a variety of different soil types – yet somehow the mineral class of Cazetiers shows through, whatever the style. I will take us through what lies under the soil, what is happening above it, and what is in your glasses.

Domaine Ponsot – Vertical Tasting
01:05:48
23 Feb 2021: There is history of innovation here with it being one of the first Domaines to practice estate bottling in the 1930s, and perhaps more significantly the Ponsots were among the first growers to understand the importance of clones and clonal selection – many of the most important Pinot Noir clones originate from their vineyards.
The first Ponsot on the scene was William, originally from St Romain but on returning from the Franco-Prussian war he settled in Morey St Denis in 1872 and bought vineyard land including the Clos des Monts Luisants. He was succeeded in 1920 by his cousin and godson, Hippolyte Ponsot, who was joined by his son Jean-Marie in 1942. Jean-Marie, long-time mayor of Morey, ran the business from 1958 until the early 1980s when his son Laurent, took over.
In 2017 Laurent Ponsot stepped down from the estate to concentrate on personal ventures. Rose-Marie Ponsot became the sole Director of the company, seconded by Alexandre Abel.
Join this webinar as Alexandre Abel and I guide us through the history and evolution of Domaine Ponsot, as we enjoy these specially chosen wines.

The Charm of Burgundy
00:58:55
15 Mar 2021: One of the wonderful features of burgundy is the multiplicity of place names, many of which feature in several different appellations. Theoretically there is a reason behind each name. With this tasting we take a look at the magical name of Charmes which can be found at village, premier cru and grand cru level. Is there a thread which links the Charmes vineyards in different villages? Join in to find out where the name came from and how they all link up.

Jasper Morris MW will be at Domaine d’Eugénie with the director of Artemis Domaines, Frédéric Engerer, and the winemaker on the ground in Vosne-Romanée, Michel Mallard. The domaine is small but perfectly formed with half their 4.5 hectares in grand cru vineyards, most notably Clos Vougeot and Grands Echezeaux.

JMIB Live: Frost Damage 2021
01:00:16
6 May 2021: The news has been full of the killer frost of 2021 in Burgundy – and indeed the rest of France, and further afield. Having lived through 2016 when the frost induced “disaster” message went out so effectively that it compromised from the start any verdict on the vintage and indeed the prices at the 2016 Hospices de Beaune auction, my first vintage as consultant, I want to delve deeper into all the parameters this time round. We need to understand, if we can, just what is going on.
In this Frost 2021 zoom I will ask and attempt to answer the following questions:
How to define the different types of extreme cold damage?
Why so many recent episodes: what has changed?
What can the vignerons do about it: techniques before, during and after?
What does this mean for the future ?
There is a huge amount to cover under these few headings: so come to the zoom, armed with a glass or bottle – perhaps of a 2016 Burgundy to renew acquaintance with the last majorly frost affected vintage, to see how the wine is progressing.

Burgundy with Jasper Morris MW - The Wine Conversation
00:38:48
Episode Summary:-
Jasper Morris MW, one of the world’s leading experts on Burgundy, talks to Sarah Kemp about the region and the new edition of his award-winning book, Inside Burgundy, which has just been published. The first edition was published over ten years ago and Jasper discusses the updated book and the aspects of Burgundy which have been affected by climate change.
In the new edition, he has gone into more detail on lesser-known areas, such as Monthélie, Fixin, and the Maconnais, and tells Sarah he regrets not being able to cover Beaujolais, but, he notes, “after 800 pages, a book has to be bound by hand.” The new edition is 150 pages longer than the first, and describes more than 1,200 vineyards and 300 wine villages, as well as appraising 700 domaines. He discusses how climate change has affected the vintages and discloses how the producers have responded to new conditions. Jasper explains how the changing patterns of airflow and wind has meant that the polar air currents are much weaker and are sliding down, and how there are now fewer southwestern winds, but more north and south, which are both dry. “People have to manage extreme weather events, plus a generally hot and dryer climate,” he says.
Jasper also talks about the different measures the producers are taking to deal with the new climate conditions, including electric cables (which are already used in Chablis, but need large water supplies), mobile wind turbines and smudge pots, though, he adds, some producers are reluctant to use them, as they are petro-chemical based.
The rise of Aligoté is something that Jasper tells Sarah he is in favour of, as it is properly Burgundian, and takes longer to ripen, which brings freshness and acidity. He believes that canopy management is crucial, and rootstock needs looking at, as some rootstock is failing. He reports that the picking window has changed and producers need to be ready to go earlier than before. “People are going to have to be a lot more intelligent about their picking dates,” he states. The use of whole bunch and partial bunch fermentation is also discussed.
“2014 and 2017 had wider windows for picking because the sugars weren’t galloping, and that’s why those two are amongst my favourite two white Burgundy vintages,” Jasper reveals. He explains he likes early-ripening sites less than before and has found that Pommard “is hitting a wonderful streak of exciting wines.”
Sarah asks him what had surprised him most when writing the second edition. “Aligoté has leapt forward,” he replies. They discuss premature oxidation and Sarah asks if it has gone away. “No, but it nearly has,” he replies.
Jasper then talks about how the different vintages are developing for both reds and whites, which vintages to keep and which to drink, plus his favourites. Finally, the question of value is raised by Sarah and Jasper advises to look at some of the best producers in lesser communes. He also suggests there is true value to be found in Monthélie, Saint-Romain, the Hautes Côtes and the Maconnais.
“It was this frost in 2021 which has made people realise quite

JMIB Live: The 2020 Vision
00:59:31
In December I completed my marathon tastings of the 2020 vintage in the Côte d’Or. Since then, with brief breaks on 25th December and 1st January, I have been compiling all my tasting notes which are available to subscribers here. At last I have resurfaced – just putting the finishing touches to Chablis 2020 – before starting the next round of tastings and it is time for a webinar to discuss the 2020 vintage and what’s happening on the ground here in Burgundy.
2020 is a really exciting vintage, almost uniformly successful in white, but with a much wider range of results in red: there are some future legends in the making, but elsewhere the fruit sometimes got scorched or the producer picked too late for optimum pinot results. Read those notes and check out where the finest wines are!
On Monday 17th January at 6.00pm UK, Jasper will be online to discuss the vintage in more detail – what worked and what didn’t, what to look out for and what pitfalls to avoid. Included in the discussion will be Jasper’s view on all that is topical in Burgundy
