02 Feb 2018 | 028 - Grace Murray from Fohr Card | 00:47:00
We first discussed influencer marketing back in September as we investigated some of the more basic workings of things from our perspective as more traditional agents and producers. Since then, influencer marketing has only grown in scale and ambition, so to help fill out the bigger picture of the ins and outs of this rapidly changing industry, we’re very excited to welcome Grace Murray to the podcast. Grace is campaign account director for Fohr Card in New York, one of the largest influencer agencies/platforms in the market. 30 Mar 2018 | 036 - Plagiarism & Pricing | 00:36:47
In case you missed it, last year we launched Open Tabs, a series of events we started with our friends at Sample Brewing which are held inside our client’s offices, where we would take four people with us - two JW artists and 2 plain interesting creative people. A bastard child of Pecha Kucha and Creative Mornings We gave each person 10 minutes to go over ten of their open tabs for one minute each - you can find out more at opentabs.rodeo if you’re interested in the full spiel. It’s something that we’ve had heaps of fun doing, as the internet is really our training ground in so many ways, so we decided that we’d be expanding our segment previously known as ‘mini links’ into a longer episode-wide discussion where we can give some of our favourite topics a bit more room to breathe. 21 Dec 2018 | 065 - It doesn’t matter how long you take a dip for, you’re still gonna get wet (with Matt Huynh) | 00:58:49
This week! We’re going through our open tabs and will be discussing Brandless Brands, Mental Health in the Advertising Industry, and one of the largest art projects which has never exhibited. Helping us bring some outside perspective today is our special guest Matt Huynh. Matt is a visual artist and storyteller based in New York City. His bold brush and ink paintings are informed by poetic Eastern sumi-e ink traditions and popular contemporary Western comic books. His animation, paintings and comics interrogate war, diaspora, refugees, asylum seekers and migrant communities. Huynh's work has been exhibited by the MoMA, The Smithsonian, The Sydney Opera House, Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn Academy of Music and New York Historical Society. His clients include the Washington Post, New York Times and The Atlantic. His most recent work on the world's first Instagram documentary with SBS was about the Rohingya refugee crisis and was nominated for a Walkley Award for Excellence in Journalism. Remember! 17 May 2019 | 081 - Put my brain in a jar and just make it happen (with Dave King, Move 37) | 01:00:59
This week! We’re going through our open tabs and will be discussing what’s in our trophy cases, whether artificial intelligence has been over-hyped, and, of course, interspecies breeding. Helping us bring some outside perspective today is our special guest Dave King. Dave is CEO and founder of the Melbourne-based creative artificial intelligence startup Move 37, where the focus is on developing tools to augment ideation, conceptual creativity and invention. Our first run-in with Dave though was at the award-winning independent creative agency The Royals, where he was founder and head of innovation. Dave has more than 20 years’ experience developing an understanding of consumer behaviour, media consumption, emerging platforms and creative practices - making him the perfect guest for today’s show. 25 Jan 2019 | 067 - Hot Turkey Cops (with Carla McRae) | 01:02:54
This week! We’re going through our open tabs and will be discussing how to live like a genius, the next big thing in virtual reality, and regaining power in our tech-dependent age. Helping us bring some outside perspective today is our special guest Carla McRae. Carla is a mighty talented Melbourne-based illustrator. We first met Carla when she interned here at our gallery, Lamington Drive, and since then she’s continued to develop her practice, taking things to enormous heights, and we’re unbelievably proud to represent her on the Jacky Winter roster. Her works pull together a blank space with clean lines, geometric shapes, and strong colour. They’re simple, honest images, inspired by the beauty of everyday moments and simple pleasures Remember! 31 Aug 2018 | 051 - Library Rules | 00:47:10
Some more astute listeners might have noticed a distinct lack of Bramham in this season, and that’s because we’ve been deliberately changing things up a bit here, as there have simply been too many links to share each week, and it’s really hard to shut us up, so to help keep things at a more reasonable level we’re capping it to three links and will regrouping/catching up with B every couple of weeks, starting with this episode right here where Jeremy, Lara, and Bianca reunite and rifle through our open tabs. We discuss the Basecamp’s library rules in open office spaces, what 50 dollars gets you in a motion design commission, and the future of podcasting! Remember! We are now an ENHANCED podcast. 08 Nov 2019 | 098 - Producing Shoes with Vanissa Antonious | 00:39:04
This week, it’s all about Producing Shoes, and I’m stoked to say that we’re joined by the remarkable Vanissa Antonious. Vanissa is the co-founder and creative director of the UK-based women’s footwear brand NEOUS, which she launched in 2017. Leading up to that, she spent eight years as a fashion stylist for Harper’s Bazaar Australia and UK, as well as doing freelance styling and consulting. Taking what she’d seen and learnt throughout her successful career, Vanissa knew she could create something unique that women were craving – and let me tell you, I’ve been craving these shoes since she put her first lookbook out. They are stunning and I’ve never seen anything else quite like them. All made in Italy, these shoes are all about accessible, durable, comfortable luxury. Vanissa also happens to be the partner of Jacky Winter artist, Timba Smits, and the two recently collaborated to create the most beautiful printed boot for the new collection.

17 Aug 2018 | 049 - True Grit (with Andrew Fairclough) | 00:53:25
Helping us bring some outside perspective today is our special guest and Jacky Winter artist Andrew Fairclough. Andrew is an Australian illustrator, designer and typographer based in LA. After a misspent youth completing a Business Degree, Andrew moved on to designing skate and snowboard graphics in between bouts of self-instruction and full time work in a design agency in his hometown of Sydney. Andrew’s work is inspired by mid-century spot illustrations and design as well as vintage sci-fi, comics, surrealism, DIY art culture, and the textural wonders of degraded print. For many other designers and Illustrators, Andrew might be more well-known as the founder and creative behind the True Grit Texture Supply co - The business he established in 2015 out of his love for all things texture and is now a thriving business in it’s own right. 09 Mar 2018 | 033 - Raph Rashid, Beatbox Kitchen + More | 00:44:28
Nearly a decade ago, before Food Trucks were literally everywhere, (and in the case of Australia, five years too late) Raph Rashid launched one of Australia’s very first, Beatbox Kitchen. Beatbox has since expanded to a whole fleet of vehicles and Raph has gone on to open a slew of successful businesses across various cuisines — including a very tasty donut shop and a brick-and-mortar restaurant. Alongside full-blown culinary domination, Raph also finds time to be a published Author and Photographer with work in the collection of the Smithsonian, as well as a father of two and partner to one of our nearest and dearest Jacky Winter artists, Beci Orpin. As someone with a seemingly never-ending appetite for new creative projects, we really wanted to sit down with Raph to talk about the systems, methods, and tools he uses to dish up so much great work, and learn the secret ingredients of his success, with just a dash of great punnery. 22 Feb 2019 | 071 - You are a Shark (with Timba Smits) | 01:13:05
This week! We’re going through our open tabs and will be discussing building a billion dollar company, stolen artwork on Amazon, and Bandersnatch. Helping us bring some outside perspective today is our special guest Timba Smits. Timba is a multi-disciplinary graphic artist, illustrator (and part-time day dreamer) whose work spans across both analog and digital mediums. Originally from down under, he spent much time living in London before moving to his current home-base of Berlin. With a core love of mid-century design and ephemera, his aesthetic aims to connect the wonders of the past with an omnipresent creative style while fusing together a wonderful - and often wacky - mix of thoughtful ideas, detail and pop-cultural references. He’s also a treasured friend of ours and long-time Jacky Winter family member so it’s just such an absolute pleasure to have him here, all the way from Europe! AND it’s his birthday! Remember! We are now an ENHANCED podcast. *On this weeks podcast, our crack team of producers discuss myths and misconceptions of an agent’s role in the creative process. How does an agent contribute to the overall success of a project? And are we worth it? These are questions clients inevitably find themselves asking. Today we explore the common misconceptions about the work agents contribute to a project. 16 Feb 2018 | 030 - Penny Modra, The Good Copy | 00:39:51
For those people of a certain age and demographic here in Melbourne - Penny Modra is someone who needs no introduction. From the days that we cofounded Is Not Magazine together, to her time as the editor of city guide The Thousands, to her long tenure as an arts writer for The Age. Penny is someone who has lived and breathed words her entire career, and has taken that passion and craft into the founding of The Good Copy - A writing school, publisher and shop, for word people. While our two industries may not be in the same exact circles anymore, we thought bringing Penny in would be a perfect way to kickstart our ‘non-industry’ interviews, especially given all the conversation we have around the important role that written communications play in creative production and life in general. We've also got a Riso print giveaway going just for our beloved podcast listeners, head over to our instagram post for more details! This week! We’re going through our open tabs and will be discussing the psychological traps of freelancing, instagram anxiety for artists, and graphic design as performance. Helping us bring some outside perspective today is our special guests Tin & Ed. As well as being two of our favourite people, Tin & Ed are creative directors and artists working between New York and Melbourne. Through installations and live digital experiences, Tin&Ed seek to explore the convergence of our physical and digital worlds. Not only have they worked with a very enviable list of clients (including NIKE, Adidas, IKEA and Visa), they’ve also exhibited and lectured throughout the world, recently speaking at Design Indaba, the AGI Congress in Mexico City and Hong Design Week. 21 Feb 2020 | 106 - Ramekin – fantastic word, fantastic vessel. | 00:33:01
While Lara is deep into producing our tenth season which will be a deep dive into the business of illustration, we’re going back to our beloved Open Tabs format for our ninth season. Loosely based on our popular event series with the same name, for the rest of our ninth season, Lara and myself will be coming together each week and going through some of our own open browser tabs, providing an insight into the creative industry from our unique points of view, as well as the google search results that offer an uncomfortably intimate portrait of our inner lives. Or at least mine. Using the internet as our lens, we hope to explore a variety of current events, opinions, and tools to provide thought-provoking conversation for anyone whose job it is to bring creative things to life, but mostly it’s a chance for us to talk a lot of nonsense. 17 Dec 2019 | 102 - Lost Episode Explanation / End Of Season 8 | 00:14:38
Before we get into it – I have two sad things to announce. The first is that this is the last episode of season 8. And what a season it’s been! We’ve learned a lot, and we hope you guys have too. The second thing, which is significantly sadder, is that this short recording you’re hearing today is not what we originally had planned as our season closer. In fact, a few weeks ago we recorded a wonderful interview with a brilliant music producer, Dave McClain, while he was visiting here from New York. Now look, there’s only one way to put what happened next… something fucked up. We don’t know what, who, how or why, but the audio file from that interview was completely ruined. We’ve spent a long time trying to recover it, but the tech gods were not looking out for us. My guess is that Jeremy secretly sabotaged it so I wouldn’t outshine him. All we know is that the interview is gone, Dave is back in New York, and with Jeremy and I both about to take off on summer holidays, there isn’t a huge lot we can do. Except! We can close things out with our favourite activity, a brief look at what’s in our open tabs. We know it’s not quite the same – and oh man, it was a great episode, we wish you could have heard it, but it looks like it’s destined to remain nothing but a special memory shared between Jeremy, Dave and I in the Jacky Winter hot box. Of course, a huge thank you to Dave for giving us his time and an enormous apology to him for how things turned out – we loved chatting to you, and we’re super glad that you also happen to be the fiance of Jacky Winter producer Bianca Bramham, so you can’t be too mad at us. 15 Dec 2017 | 025 - The Animation Episode! | 00:59:30
Well, it’s taken us nearly half a year to get there, but we’re finally ready to sit down and have a serious heart to heart talk about animation. For us here at Jacky Winter through our Flutter and Gif Horse branches, making things move accounts for more and more of our workflow each year. As more screens fill more places, brands and publishers need more content to put on those screens, and this is exactly where we come in. For our artists and producers, working on animated content can be one of the most rewarding tasks there is, but it’s not without it’s unique production challenges. To that end, we thought we’d have a bit more of a process driven chat today to talk about how animation differs from some of the other projects we work on, and some of the specific skills required as producers to help navigate them. We are currently looking for new interview subjects! Know a PM, producer, studio manager, art buyer, etc etc who is amazing at their job? Dob them in to podcast@jackywinter.com so we can hit them up! Season 3! We made it! This season we’re shaking things up a bit. We heard you and we know you love the Open Tabs segments, so this week we’re going to be focusing on that! But that doesn’t mean we’re not going to be speaking to some of our favourite people in the industry. In fact, each week we’ll be bringing someone on to contribute their own link and thoughts to the discussion. Much like our irl Open Tabs events (which you can find out more about here), we’re digging deep into our JW network of amazing people to contribute their own link each week, and this week we are delighted to welcome Georgia Perry. Apart from being one of the brightest and boldest artists on the JW roster, Georgia is also a prolific designer and entrepreneur with her signature range of fashion accessories are sold in retailers around the world. 29 Nov 2019 | 101 - Producing Magazines with Sophie Kalagas | 00:38:10
This week, it’s all about Producing Magazines, and I’m thrilled that we’re joined by the absolutely fabulous Sophie Kalagas. Sophie is the Editor of Frankie Magazine – an international, bi-monthly publication based right here in Melbourne that celebrates, inspires and empowers a community of creatively inclined, curious and kind-hearted readers. It covers all sorts of topics across design, art, photography, fashion, travel, music, craft, interiors and real-life stories, and Sophie is responsible for bringing it all together. For Editors, it seems there’s actually a lot of production involved, artfully managing teams of writers, photographers, designers, art directors, and all sorts of other talents, carefully kneading it all into a publication that truly stands out amongst a sea of other titles each and every month – something Sophie does with extraordinary skill. It’s crazy to think that Frankie has been on stands for 15 years now. For a whopping 7 of those, Sophie has been an integral part of making Frankie something we truly cherish.

07 Feb 2020 | 104 - Energy drink aesthetic | 00:29:54
As I teased in the first episode, Lara is beavering away at our tenth season which will be a deep dive into the business of illustration. It’s a pretty fun and ambitious project, but it sadly means we don’t have the time to do the hard-hitting investigative production and research that we normally have the resources to do, so therefore we’re going back to our beloved Open Tabs format for our ninth season. For the next few months as Lara and I put together this new project, we’ll be coming together each week and going through some of our own open tabs, providing an insight into the creative industry from our unique points of view. Using the internet as our lens, we hope to explore a variety of current events, opinions, and tools to provide thought-provoking conversation for anyone whose job it is to bring creative things to life, but mostly it’s a chance for us to talk a lot of shit. 23 Mar 2018 | 035 - Tom & George McQueen | 00:43:07
Continuing along on our theme of tracking down every Australian currently living in New York and interviewing them on this podcast, we get to cross not one, but two names off our bucket list today. Currently ranked #1 Copywriter and #1 Art Director in the Cannes Lions Global Rankings respectively, Tom and George McQueen spent four years at Clemenger BBDO in Melbourne, producing some of their most memorable and effective campaigns in recent years, most notably, the ‘Meet Graham’ piece for the TAC along with artist Patricia Piccinini before moving over to the big apple where they are currently stationed at Droga5 and doing us all very proud. We’re so excited to have them here today to hopefully bring a new perspective to the conversations we’ve been having here, as ironically I think this is the first time we’ve heard from the perspective of a creative, especially a team, and especially especially, identical twins. 26 Jan 2018 | 027 - A chance encounter with Claire Brooks | 00:53:27
This week we dust off the cobwebs and officially start our second season. After a leisurely break battling our respective extreme weather conditions, we’re back with a renewed sense of purpose and clarity after tinkering under the hood of the podcast and slightly reconfiguring how we do things around here. Over the coming weeks and episodes, you might notice a few changes. Firstly, we’re making an effort to make our episodes shorter. Now that every man, woman, and child and pet has their own podcast, we know that your time is more valuable than ever to squeeze all that content into your ear-holes, so together with our superstar producer Areej, we’re working extra hard behind the scenes to get things tighter and leaner so you only get that nice top creamy layer of Jacky Winter aweseomness that you have grown to love. Secondly, we’re going to be introducing more interviews with people who have absolutely nothing to do with the advertising or design community, but still have valid lessons and experiences to share regarding production or the sheer experience of making things and putting them out into the world. As I’ve spoken about here previously, I’ve learned most of my greatest lessons in business from being a client and patron of businesses myself. From architects to cafe owners, we hope to really expand the professional scope of individuals from all creative corners, in hopes that we can really broaden the discussion on the thoughts, processes, and systems that people from all professions use to Make Their Thing. Fear not! We’ll still be bringing you stories and people from our favourite agencies and brands, but we’ll just be adding a bit of new blood to the mix. Between both honing and broadening our focus with our guests, we’ll be breaking things up a bit with some more extended discussion between the three of us on some of the most exciting and thought-provoking articles and announcements from our ‘Mini-Links’ feature, the part of the show where we crap on about things we read on the internet from our #professionaldevelopment slack channel. All in all, our focus hasn’t changed - We’re still determined to be a platform and voice for those individuals and processes behind the scenes that help creative projects come to life and we hope you like what we have in store! One thing that we’ve really relied on to help us get this far is your feedback and support. From suggesting interview and discussion topics, to reviewing and rating the podcast on iTunes, it’s been so encouraging to hear from so many of you. To help get us to the next season, we really need this to be a 2-way conversation, so please drop us a line and let us know what you think! Do you have a question, a suggestion, or a suggested person to interview? Don’t be shy, we REALLY love an email. It makes our day, so go on and drop us a line at podcast@jackywinter.com. We are currently looking for new interview subjects! Know a PM, producer, studio manager, art buyer, etc etc who is amazing at their job? Dob them in to podcast@jackywinter.com so we can hit them up! 25 Oct 2019 | 096 - Producing Video Games with Trent Kusters | 00:52:25
This week, it’s all about Producing Video Games, and we're jazzed to say that we’re joined by the masterful Trent Kusters. Trent is the co-founder and production director of Melbourne-based game developers League of Geeks, responsible for digital role-playing strategy board game and international success story, Armello. He is also on the board of Freeplay (Australia's largest and longest running independent games festival), the chair of RMIT's Program Advisory Committee, a former lecturer at the Victorian College of the Arts, and an industry advisor to DiGRA Australia. A frequent name on the numerous 30 Under 30 lists — by the likes of MCV, Develop, Triple J, the Melbourne Writers Festival, and (the big one) Forbes — Trent is heavily invested in the future of video games as a medium; fostering and mentoring young and under-represented developers, and contributing to the community wherever possible. To cap things off, he’s also currently gamerunner on the studio’s ambitious next game, which is set to be one of Australia's largest game productions ever. Remember! We are now an ENHANCED podcast. 11 Oct 2019 | 094 - Producing Software with Virginia Murdoch | 00:34:58
This week, it’s all about Producing Software, and we're over the moon to say that we’re joined by the fantastic Virginia Murdoch. Virginia is the Director of Product at Culture Amp — a Melbourne HR startup that provides employee feedback technology that helps their 2,500 customers in 47 countries transform, maintain and scale positive company culture. Founded in 2009, Culture Amp has since expanded its offices to San Francisco, New York and London, with 400 staff members globally, and just this past September they raised $82 million US dollars in Series E funding. Impressive. Just as impressive is Virginia herself — now 3 years in at Culture Amp, she previously ran her own web agency, Inventive Labs, which along with doing lots of work for local booksellers and publishers (like Readings and Scribe), also created a number of the early iterations of the Jacky Winter website! She and her team built Book.ish, a product that allowed people to read ebooks in their web browsers, before selling the company to OverDrive, where Virginia then headed to serve as their product manager for a few years. She’s also on the board of the not-for-profit group Women and Mentoring, which provides support to women who are coming into contact with the justice system; helping them stay on track and avoid custodial sentences. Remember! We are now an ENHANCED podcast. 18 Oct 2019 | 095 - Producing Fashion Photography with Eliza Hoyland | 00:33:32
This week, it’s all about Producing Fashion Photography, and I’m chuffed to say that we’re joined by the fabulous Eliza Hoyland. Eliza is an Australian Producer and Photographer, living and working in New York. Whilst producing for some of the highest fashion industry brands and magazines like Vogue, Fenty, Harpers Bazaar, Alexander Wang and Moncler you’ll find her running around set with a big red lipstick smile, dealing out instructions or dancing around with the celebrity talent. Now, Eliza and I met on a train around ten years ago and have been friends ever since, so it doesn’t surprise me whatsoever that her speciality of creating instant personal connections with clients and artists has built her a reputation as a truly "one of a kind" producer. And since moving to New York 6 years ago, Eliza’s tales about the insane world of fashion photography production have given me life. Remember! We are now an ENHANCED podcast. When Jacky Winter made its foray into Photography many years ago, we did so in partnership alongside producer and agent extraordinaire, Sarah Ewing, and her agency SEA. 10 Nov 2017 | 020 - New kid on the blockchain | 00:36:43
If you’ve bought or sold anything in the last few years, you’ve more than likely come across the term Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies. The technology that makes this all happen is called a Blockchain, and if you’re following current trends, it’s the word on the tip of everyone’s tongue. Much like VR and AR, many other industries are still trying to figure out the broader use of the technology, especially the marketing and advertising communities, so we thought we’d dip our toes in and report back our findings for those who might want to stay ahead of the curve in their own practice. This week! We’re going through our open tabs and will be discussing Performance Reviews, Inbox Infinity, and what etched cucumbers have to do with hustle culture. Helping us bring some outside perspective today is our special guest Alex Daly. Alex is the founder of Vann Alexandra, DalyPR, and, now, Daly. She is the industry’s “Crowdsourceress,” a member of the Forbes 30 Under 30 class of 2016, and a frequent speaker at festivals and events for designers, innovators, women entrepreneurs, and big thinkers. Dubbed a “Kickstarter queen,” “crowdfunding guru,” and “wunderkind”, she has managed crowdfunding and PR campaigns for Oscar-winning filmmakers, Pentagram partners, MIT Media Lab inventors, Neil Young, Joan Didion, and the female-led musical sensation TLC. In 2017, Alex authored her first book, The Crowdsourceress: Get Smart, Get Funded, and Kickstart Your Next Big Idea, published by Hachette. Basically, she’s bloody amazing. Remember! 16 Mar 2018 | 034 - The decline of adland jobs, how to be a better client, and the BEST ART WEBSITE NOBODY HAS HEARD OF. | 00:36:26
It’s something that we’ve had heaps of fun doing, as the internet is really our training ground in so many ways, so we decided that we’d be expanding our segment previously known as ‘mini link’ into a longer episode-wide discussion where we can give some of our favourite topics a bit more room to breathe. Remember! We are now an ENHANCED podcast. This week! We’re going through our open tabs and will be discussing debates in the workplace, variable type, and the mystery of the vaguely named ‘creative director’. Helping us bring some outside perspective today is our special guest Rhys Gorgol. Rhys Gorgol is the principal and Creative Director of The Company You Keep, a branding and design practice based in Melbourne. Founded with the vision that working with like-minded people produces better results, The Company You Keep set out to keep good company and help create great companies in the process. Preferring to explore diversity, rather than vogue, his work has seen him take his unique design philosophy to a breadth of weird and wonderful sectors and projects, providing a refreshing view to everything from maternity bags to vegan chocolate. 13 Mar 2020 | 109 - Any updates on this? | 00:43:20
While Lara is deep into producing our tenth season which will be a dive into the business of illustration, we’re going back to our beloved Open Tabs format for our ninth season. Using the internet as our lens, we hope to explore a variety of current events, opinions, and tools to provide thought-provoking conversation for anyone whose job it is to bring creative things to life, but mostly it’s a chance for us to talk a lot of jazz. Remember! We are now an ENHANCED podcast. 24 Jan 2020 | 103 - Step, plant, and kick. | 00:37:41
Happy beginning of Season 9! For anyone who’s listened to the show from the early days, you’ll know that the format often changes from season to season, as we tackle new topics and get excited about new things. We’re taking a bit of a lighter approach to this season, and going to be going back to our Open Tabs format. Based on a series that we’ve run across two different countries now, Open Tabs is basically a private event that we take to our ad agency clients and run in house. We get four amazing speakers to plug in their laptop and literally go through their open browser tabs. Each speaker gets one minute per tab and a maximum of ten tabs, and it’s a bit of a mashup between pecha kucha and creative mornings, and a whole lot of fun. This season however, with Lara doing a deep dive for our next season, I’m super excited to announce my new co-host for the Season, Rachael Kendrick. Rachael is a London based creative copywriter who’s worked all over the place, including Wieden + Kennedy, AKQA, Huge, Ogilvy and Google. In a previous life she finished a PhD, before washing out of academia when she realised that she’d much rather make deeply stupid adverts than peer reviewed articles that noone reads. For the next three months, Rachael and myself will be coming together each week and going through our own open tabs. Remember! We are now an ENHANCED podcast. Along the way she’s also worked in documentary feature film and theatre, and she continues her love for grassroots creative communities as a broadcaster at Melbourne radio station, Triple R. Recently Jess and Lara worked together on the Freedom Calendar — a project featuring 20 Jacky Winter artists that raised over $10K for the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre. Remember! For many creative individuals and business in Melbourne, the name Jo-Anne Hook will not be new to them. For over 25 years, Jo-Anne has been a trusted advisor, consultant, and coach to some of Melbourne’s most well-known creative brands, businesses, and individuals. On a personal level, Jo-Anne has been instrumental in the growth of Jacky Winter's team of producers here as we’ve worked together over the years so we thought as we continued along in our interview series that we would bring Jo-Anne in to share her story and lessons with a broader audience. 19 Apr 2019 | 077 - The good, the bad and the Brad (with Jess Cruickshank) | 00:54:44
This week! We’re going through our open tabs and will be discussing how an artist’s social networks affects their fame, the instagram era of book design, and what happens when your work is also your hobby. Helping us bring some outside perspective today is our special guests Jess Cruickshank. Jess is a brilliantly talented letterer and illustrator living in Sydney. Originally a designer working in advertising, she joined the Jacky Winter roster in 2015 and has been drawing for her supper ever since. Jess's work can be seen across a variety of media, from editorial illustrations to hand painted typefaces to murals and animated gifs. Most recently, she's been working on lots of book covers — a natural fit for her double-threat skill set of both lettering and illustration. 15 Nov 2019 | 099 - Producing Architecture with Imogen Pullar | 00:45:26
This week, it’s all about Producing Architecture, and I’m delighted to say that we’re joined by the excellent Imogen Pullar. Imogen is an architect based right here in Melbourne. For the better part of a decade, she worked at Nest Architects, which is where we met her while she was working on our, at the time, new Jacky Winter offices! There she was running large-scale projects for government and educational institutions, as well as homes for private clients. Around three years ago, she became a mother and, needing more flexibility in her life, she started her own solo practice. With a particular interest in housing and projects that nurture community and the environment, working on her own practice allows Imogen to focus on the things that are truly important to her, such as having an inclusive design process that broadens the accessibility of architects for all sorts of people; having an ethical approach to her designs, suppliers and materials, to work towards a healthy future for the inhabitants and the world around us; and educating clients on the benefits of designing homes that fulfil those values.

21 Dec 2017 | 026 - 2017: Hold my beer. | 00:54:00
For us here at JW, 2017 was the year that we developed a pavlovian auto-anxiety response to the New York Time push news alert. Is it too much to ask to not use the same system to notify me that North Korea has launched a missile test with the same one that tells me their annual gift guide is released? While 2017 has seen its fair share of bullshit to say the least, there were some pretty amazing things happening as well - not to mention the fact that the advertising and design worlds continued to somehow exist and stay relevant, and not get decimated by our new AI overlords. So to help celebrate the year that was, and what is to come, we thought we’d check in with each other to go over everything from our favourite projects and pop culture obsessions here at JW, all the way to our predictions for the new year and narkiest anonymous comments. We are currently looking for new interview subjects! Know a PM, producer, studio manager, art buyer, etc etc who is amazing at their job? Dob them in to podcast@jackywinter.com so we can hit them up! 10 May 2019 | 080 - Creatio ex nihilo (with Stanislava Pinchuk (Miso)) | 01:06:25
This week! We’re going through our open tabs and will be discussing machines replacing our memories, Reviving the Idea of the Medieval Guild, and FINALLY, our newly launched campaign, Use It Or Lose It. Helping us bring some outside perspective today is our special guest Stanislava Pinchuk, AKA Miso. Stanislava, as well as being a close friend of the show, is a uniquely talented and fascinating artist, well known for her work with data mapping the changing topographies of war & conflict zones – such as the current Civil War in her home country Ukraine, the Fukushima and Chernobyl Reactor 4 Nuclear Exclusion Zones, the oil fires set by ISIS south of Mosul, and the Calais ‘Jungle’ Migrant Camp. She produces drawings, installations and sculptures shown in museums globally, and her work has been collected and supported by institutions such as the Louvre, the National Gallery of Australia, Heide MoMA, and Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art. On the commercial end, she’s worked with clients such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Gucci, Apple & Nike – and she has also just topped the Forbes 30 Under 30 List. It’s a genuine honour to have her joining us. Remember! We are now an ENHANCED podcast. 22 Nov 2019 | 100 - Producing Theatre with Michelle Law | 00:45:01
This week, it’s all about Producing Theatre, darling, and I’m so excited that we’re joined by the phenomenal Michelle Law. Michelle is a writer and actor based in Sydney. Her talents are amazingly diverse, writing for print, film, television, and theatre. So, just a few reasons why she’s fabulous – Michelle wrote the fantastic play Single Asian Female, which had sold out seasons across Australia; she’s the co-creator, co-writer and co-lead of the SBS series Homecoming Queens; and her writing has been anthologised in numerous books including Women of Letters, Best Australian Comedy Writing and Destroying the Joint. For her incredible work she’s received various awards, including two Australian Writer's Guild AWGIE awards, an Equity Ensemble Award, and the Queensland Premier's Young Publishers and Writers Award. To bring things full circle, several years back Michelle co-wrote the book Shit Asian Mothers Say alongside her brother Ben Law (who was on our show a few seasons ago) which was illustrated by Jacky Winter’s very own Oslo Davis. Which means I have only like 3 degrees of separation from this amazing woman. Currently, Michelle’s working on an original feature film and several new stage works. She is also a prolific speaker, regularly appearing on panels and at festivals, so we’re super lucky to have her here with us.

14 Sep 2018 | 053 - A new kind of brain (with Fraser Shiers, Forge and Morrow) | 00:52:08
Helping us bring some outside perspective today is our special guest Fraser Shiers. One of our talented Jacky Winter artists, Fraser Shiers is an award-winning illustrator, and the founder and director of Forge & Morrow — a studio specialising in CGI and 3D illustration and typography. His works are playful and inventive, precise and detailed — utilising the 3D medium to skilfully compose images that blur the line between illustration and reality. Thanks to these skills, Fraser has produced work for the best of the best, including Telstra, Harley Davidson, Optus, VB, and Cadbury, amongst many others. He’s the man we often turn to when we need high-level technical advice about 3D, because his knowledge in this area runs extremely deep. And now we get to pick his brains on the podcast! Remember! 02 Mar 2018 | 032 - Hand-painted walls, Cryptomnesia, and browser snooping | 00:28:28
Before we get to the show a few notes!Firstly! We are now an ENHANCED podcast. That's right - If you listen to our podcast in Overcast or Pocket Casts, you can get super special images, links, and chapter breaks in your player while you listen.Secondly! We are giving away a special A2 Riso print for the first 50 people who leave us reviews on iTunes. They don't have to be good reviews, but that would help. Visit our instagram post here for more details!A few months ago we launched Open Tabs, a series of events we started holding inside our client’s offices, where we would take four people with us - two JW artists and 2 plain interesting creative people. We gave each person 10 minutes to go over ten of their open tabs for one minute each. From personally revealing google search results, to private tumblrs or webapp gems, these sessions really brought out some amazing nuggets of insight in an intimate ‘non-marketing’ type of event, all helped along by our friends at Sample brew who provided all the booze to keep conversation going. Over a dozen events in, the feedback has been amazing and we’re going to keep it going strong. If you work at large agency and you are interested in hosting one at your office, you can find out more at opentabs.rodeo, but in the meantime we thought that now that we have really expanded the segment we have called ‘Mini Links’ for nearly a year now, and it’s not so mini after all, that going under the Open Tabs banner is probably more appropriate. So here we go! (We've also got a Riso print giveaway going just for our beloved podcast listeners, head over to our instagram post for more details!) 01 Nov 2019 | 097 - Producing Live TV with Anna Reeves | 00:45:12
This week, it’s all about Producing Live TV, and I’m very happy to say that we’re joined by the brilliant Anna Reeves. Anna is co-creator and showrunner of That StartUp Show, the award-winning live online TV series focusing on the fast-growing entrepreneurial boom and the culture that surrounds it. Before all that, Anna began her career as a lawyer, working with Australia’s leading media production houses. From there she followed her belief in the power of story, technology and business to be forces for change, working as Campaign Director and Partnerships Manager for various charitable projects. Anna has also worked on company culture transformation programs as a writer and producer, with global organisations such as Qantas, Westpac, KPMG, and Vodafone. Adding even more to her incredible list of accomplishments, Anna recently associate produced her first feature film, The Space Between, which was selected as the Australian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 90th Academy Awards. Alongside That Startup Show, Anna is currently exploring the evolution of empathy in a VR documentary, and continuing her work in storymaking that affects cultural change. Remember! 06 Mar 2020 | 108 - Keeping that 2x energy | 00:38:53
Using the internet as our lens, we hope to explore a variety of current events, opinions, and tools to provide thought-provoking conversation for anyone whose job it is to bring creative things to life, but mostly it’s a chance for us to talk a lot of claptrap. Remember! We are now an ENHANCED podcast. 09 Feb 2018 | 029 - Mentorships. The Email Charter. Influencer Agencies. HAPPY FUN BALL. | 00:40:41
This week! Lara discusses the importance of mentorship and the new offering launched from Career Contessa. Bianca takes a tip from last week's episode to drop a truth bomb on why THE EMAIL PROBLEM IS REAL. Jeremy reviews one of the most recently launched influencer agencies and ponders how and and if Influence marketing dis-incentivises craft in commercial art. We’re planning on doing these episodes every couple of weeks to break up the interviews as well as to give us some more space to tease out some of the more exploratory content that we’ve heard you enjoy. Before we jump in, I should say we REALLY need a better name for this segment/feature. If you can think of a good one, we’ll name the next Mini Link episode after you. This week! We’re going through our open tabs and will be discussing what Apple’s News Plus service means for the journalism industry, a new empowerment campaign for illustrators, and how to bounce back from rejection. Helping us bring some outside perspective today is our special guests Neha Kale. Neha is a writer, journalist and cultural critic. She writes features, criticism and essays about art, culture, people and places, appearing in titles such as The Sydney Morning Herald's Spectrum, The Saturday Paper, SBS Life, The Guardian, VICE, ABC, The Griffith Review, Broadsheet and many more. Formerly the editor of VAULT magazine, she’s now their editor-at-large. A little while ago Neha joined us as a fabulous speaker at a live Open Tabs event in Sydney and we’re so chuffed that the stars aligned perfectly for her to join us here in the Melbourne studio for today’s show. Before we get to the show a few notes!Firstly! We are now an ENHANCED podcast. We are giving away a special A2 Riso print for the first 50 people who leave us reviews on iTunes. They don't have to be good reviews, but that would help. Visit our instagram post here for more details!Mid last year when we were just scrappy podcast upstairs, we came across the phenomenal newsletter called DPM(ish) - An incredible weekly mailout of links and editorial specifically geared towards ‘DPM’s’, or Digital Project Managers. Much like hearing Morrissey for the first time when I was 13, we immediately thought - Wow, someone really gets us. While we started brainstorming a list of dream interview guests for this year, the creator of DPMish, along with the amazingly hilarious and on point tumblr, PM Reactions, Natalie Semczuk was at the top of our list. But who was this mysterious person who was ‘location agnostic’ with a photo of a lone cat on her about page. Well, we’re delighted to answer all these questions today and more as we welcome Natalie to the podcast to talk all about her life as a Digital Project Manager, and how her skills and training can be applied to creative producers of all stripes. We've also got a Riso print giveaway going just for our beloved podcast listeners, head over to our instagram post for more details!
