22 Feb 2022Staying "Regular": Why It's So Important and How To Do It EP12900:19:49

Send us a text

Today we’re talking all about poop! Nothing is TMI around here – and while this is an uncomfortable topic to talk about, it’s super important when it comes to your health. Constipation is a pretty regular problem, it’s something that is very uncomfortable, sometimes even miserable, it also can be problematic.

So why do Cody and Jess  want to talk about this? Our stool is where a lot of our toxins are released – in addition to hormones. If we are unable to have 1-3 bowel movements every day, then those toxins can actually get recycled back into the body. The more toxins we have in us, the more inflammation we can experience – which can lead to additional symptoms. These are wide-ranging from migraines to anxiety to brain fog to fatigue to hormonal imbalance (and PMS) and more.

01 Mar 20228 Facts About the Pill You Didn’t Know: Deep Dive with Cody EP13000:52:15

Send us a text

Most of us have been on hormonal birth control (aka the pill and hormonal IUD) at some point – in fact, there’s a statistic that 98% of women have taken it at least for a little while in their lifetime. Many of us take it for a long time – 5, 10, 15, and even 20+ years.

It is handed out as easily as candy at the doctor’s office and many women don’t really even think about it as a medication – it’s like it falls into its own bucket.

But it is for sure a medication – and it is designed to stop ovulation to prevent pregnancy. It’s also prescribed often as a “fix” for things like acne, PMS, heavy periods, and more. Which totally bugs us to no end!

Hopefully doctors prescribing it tell you the warnings – potential for blood clots and stroke – but too many times we’re told it’s those things are rare. So it almost feels like it’s this magic potion that can help solve so many problems women are faced with.

Really, though, is it?

Cody lays it all out for us in todays episode. She shares all about the untold secrets about hormonal birth control, about different forms of non-hormonal birth control and how to transition off of hormonal birth control in a healthy way.

Send us a text

Something that Jess loves to relate to other women about is the powerful intuition that women have. Jess feels that Mixhers has been built off of a lot of gut instinct decisions and willingness to do hard things when you know it’s the right thing. What Jess loved to talk to Corinne, of Mint Arrow, about is exactly that… how has she grown a business based off of her willingness to make career changes, change her message and stay aligned with her heart. How has she felt the response has been from her audience when she chooses to remain truly authentic and how can we all remain close to our natural instincts? Listen to hear how Corinne has created an incredibly powerful audience and important message by sticking true to who she is!

22 Mar 2022Why Fitness Isn't One Size Fits All with guest Amber Brueseke of Biceps After Babies EP13300:41:17

Send us a text

There are certain ideas and ideals that are tied to what “healthy” actually means; we think that in order to be healthy, women need to be a certain weight, follow a certain diet, and hit certain fitness and wellness goals.

But those ideals can actually put unnecessary pressure on women. Thinking you need to live up to these strict, and often inaccurate, ideals in order to be “healthy” can take a toll, both mentally (in the form of anxiety or self-criticism) and physically (in the form of exhaustion or pushing things too hard).

The truth is, when it comes to women’s health, there’s no one-size-fits-all definition—and these persistent stereotypes of what “healthy” means might actually be preventing women from being their healthiest (and happiest!) selves.

On today's episode Cody, Jess and their amazing guest Amber Brueseke,  a well-known Fitness Trainer and owner of the account @biceps.after.babies on IG, talk about some of the most common stereotypes about women’s health—and paint a more realistic, accurate picture of what a healthy woman looks like. This is an episode you'll want to share with all of the girls in your life!

28 Mar 2022Changing The Cycle: How To Help End Period Poverty with guest Kristin Andrus EP13400:28:42

Send us a text

With 1 in 5 girls missing school due to lack of menstrual products1, period poverty is an important, yet often ignored, public health crisis. “Period poverty” refers to the problem many women are facing  of being unable to afford products such as pads, tampons, or liners to manage menstrual bleeding. In place of sanitary products, many girls are forced to use items like rags, paper towels, toilet paper, or cardboard. Others ration sanitary products by using them for extended amounts of time. Period poverty encompasses not only this lack of access to products, but also inadequate access to toilets, hand washing receptacles, and hygienic waste management.

Don't think this is happening only in third world countries, this is happening in our own communities. Period Poverty is occurring all around us. There is a lack of awareness because it's a "taboo topic", it's uncomfortable to talk about.

As you know, Jess and Cody started the It's Hertime Podcast to help change the conversation about periods and women's health. On today's episode they are delighted to invite another crusader, Kristin Andrus, to help educate and share what we as a community can do to help to end period poverty in our local communities.

Meet Kristin:

Kristin Andrus is a community champion who advocates for women, children, and refugees within and beyond Utah. She is also Chief Culture Officer to her husband and six children.

Kristin serves as a board member for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Intermountain Area and for UnDEfeated, an organization serving underprivileged youth and single mothers in Uganda. Nonprofits count on Kristin for her social media and marketing savvy as well as her supernatural ability to get stuff done.

With over 100,000 combined followers on 91,000 Instagram andfollowers, 12,000 YouTube, subscribers, and live cooking segments on Utah’s Studio 5, Kristin has built a platform for awareness and impact.

In November 2020, Kristin launched #SisterGoods, an Instagram campaign that raised $30,000 in its first week to supply menstrual care products to schools, shelters, and foster care facilities throughout Utah. #SisterGoods has since spread to more than 60 communities across the U.S.

"Menstrual products are a necessity, not a luxury" - Kristin Andrus

05 Apr 2022Endometriosis, Painful Sex, and Other Taboo Topics with guest Lindsay Eager EP13501:17:25

Send us a text

On today's episode Cody welcomes guest Lindsay Eager, a real life Mixhers customer and lover of Hertime.  For years of having doctors insist she just had “bad period cramps,” or implying that her pain was psychological. Shamed and stigmatized, Lindsay fought to figure out what was going on with her body and pushed against the ignorance of many doctors about women’s anatomy, because she learned that endometriosis was damaging more than just her own life.

Did you know that one in ten women have endometriosis and it takes an average of seven years before they receive an accurate diagnosis―or any relief from this incurable illness’ chronic pain?

You will love listening to Lindsay's candid revelations about her symptoms and how she was finally diagnosed. You will relate to her diet and wardrobe malfunctions, troubles with dating, marriage, sex, coping at work, struggling with infertility, going through the adoption process...all while her vagina just hurt all the time.

Luckily, Lindsay has found the light at the end of this very dark tunnel, you will be so happy to hear about where she is today and what has helped put her endometriosis into remission.

PCOS, or polycystic ovarian syndrome, affects between 5 to 10 percent of all women. PCOS symptoms include irregular or heavy periods, acne, facial hair, scalp hair loss, increased belly fat, and increased levels of testosterone. It is also strongly correlated with infertility. In this episode, Cody sits down with Jason Hone  to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to treating patients with PCOS. They delve into topics including the relationship between PCOS and insulin resistance, gut health, what tests to request and much more.

Jason Hone, MSN, APRN, C-FNP, practices as a holistic provider for patients of all walks of life, including working with hundreds of women suffering with hormonal imbalance and specifically, PCOS.  He has worked in various disciplines of healthcare since 1996. 19 Apr 2022Say Goodbye To Hormonal Acne EP13700:29:01

Send us a text

Did you know that hormonal acne, aka "adult" acne affect adults between the ages of 20 and 50? Hormonal acne affects both men and women, but the majority of cases occur in women, pregnant women  and women going through menopause.

Acne is the most common skin condition in the U.S. It affects nearly about 80% of the population during their lifetime. About 50% of women in their 20's and 25% of women in their 40's get hormonal acne.

Acne is caused by clogged pores. Hormonal acne develops when hormonal changes, like excess testosterone, increase the amount of oil your skin produces. This oil interacts with bacteria on the pores of your skin where hair grows (hair follicles) and results in acne.

On today's episode, Cody and Jess talk about Jess' personal hormonal acne story and how she learned how to heal hormonal acne by first taking steps to heal her hormonal system. She learned how to work with her body rather than fighting against it.

Listen in to learn what she did, how she did it and what a difference it has made in her overall health and life.

17 May 2022Odd Ways Our Menstrual Cycles and Mental Health Are Connected with guest Elizabeth Olson EP14100:52:08

Send us a text

Because hormones have a hand in almost everything going on in our bodies, they also affect our brains and therefore, emotions. This is why hormones can directly influence our mental health, even if that change is just periodic and linked to our menstrual cycle.

Join Cody and Elizabeth as they talk about what hormones are up to during our cycle, so that we can better understand why we might be feeling a certain way. And while it won't give us the power to suddenly control how we're feeling all of the time, what they share today, can help us make sense of it.

Todays episode is a nice reminder to stop that inner critic giving us such a hard time, and to be kind to ourselves instead. With the right knowledge and self-care, we can turn meltdowns and angst into understanding and compassion.

Elizabeth and Cody discuss dealing with conditions like PMS, PMDD, ADHD, anxiety and depression and about how our hormones interplay with these existing conditions and how it all affects our mental health.

Also, they talk about how one of the best ways to make the most of our cycles and mood is to start tracking our cycle all month long. This tracking helps to uncover patterns and helps us to understand the language of our symptoms. This can help us to predict hormonal imbalance and emotional patterns throughout the month.

Check out Elizabeth's Period Tracker here.
You can also connect with Elizabeth Olson here.

Episode 106: How Undiagnosed ADHD Can Cause Anxiety and Depression was referenced in this episode and is a great way to learn more.

24 May 2022Understanding The Power of Our Emotions to Help Us Heal with Ashleigh DiLello EP14201:00:21

Send us a text

Did you know that our thoughts and emotions can affect our health?  Emotions that are freely experienced and expressed without judgment or attachment tend to flow fluidly without impacting our health. On the other hand, repressed emotions (especially fearful or negative ones) can zap mental energy, negatively affect the body, and lead to health problems, like hormonal imbalance, and actually keep us from truly healing.

Sometimes we can be doing "everything right" when it comes to healing, the main reason we do not heal is because we are motivated and driven by fear. Sadly, most people who eat healthy, move their bodies and make other positive lifestyle changes do it because they don't like themselves and/or their bodies (not because they do).

On today's episode, Cody invited Ashleigh DiLello to be her special guest. Together they dive into the power of our mindset and emotions and how we can put this power to good use. Ashleigh is a Mind Coach and creator of Bio Emotional Healing®, a process based in neuroscience that helps her clients rewire their subconscious mind. She teaches us how to disrupt our negative thought loop, calm our body and emotions , take control of your thoughts and get out of survival mode, so that we can heal and enjoy optimal health. Be ready to have your mind blown!

31 May 2022Your Summer Hormone Travel Guide EP14300:26:12

Send us a text

When we travel, our sleep schedule tends to go sideways. Healthy eating can feel difficult, if not impossible, in airports and train stations. We might skip the key supplements we usually take and crossing time zones can mess up your internal clock. Exercise becomes an afterthought and hydration often goes out the window… at which point constipation can become the norm. And when your GI tract is backed up, excess estrogen gets stuck in our system and wreaks a bunch of havoc.

Needless to say, all these shifts are hard on hormones. Actually, that’s an understatement. Sleep, food, supplements, hydration, exercise… these are THE things that keep our hormones working for us and not against us. When you have these lifestyle strategies locked down, you put an end to period problems like acne, bloating, PMS, severe cramps, heavy or irregular periods, hormonal migraines, and irritability and moodiness.

But when you travel and your hormone-supportive strategies get thrown off track, you can feel rotten quickly…and who wants to be bloated, moody, and covered in zits on summer vacation?!

For this week’s episode,Cody has  gathered her best strategies for for keeping your hormones healthy and happy when you’re traveling. A few small tweaks can keep you feeling great when you’re on the move. Tune in and follow the steps she shares and your hormone health won’t have to go out the window when you go on vacation.

14 Jun 2022Top 5 Ways to Address Heavy Bleeding EP14500:38:14

Send us a text

In case we needed one more example of how conventional medicine fails women in perimenopause, let’s take a moment to consider heavy bleeding…
Virtually every woman is going to experience at least occasional heavy bleeding during the perimenopause years; (and in this episode Cody discusses the real issues causing this problem and talk about the things we CAN do things to get relief and overcome this issue).

Things often heard from conventional doctors are something along the lines of:
 “Just buy heavier pads/tampons.”
“It’s not hurting your body to bleed so much; it’s ‘normal’ after all. So you can keep living your life.”
“Well, you can look forward to menopause and you won’t have to deal with it anymore!”

Can you see the thread running through these suggestions?

Deal with it.
It’ll end, so why should we try to fix it?
You’re a woman so you’re used to bleeding… it’s not that bad, right?

In this episode Cody is  here today to tell us all that we do NOT just have to suffer from heavy, painful periods in perimenopause. There’s a reason it’s happening, and there are natural, safe ways to get relief quickly!

If you have a broken arm, do you wait until it heals to do something to fix it?

 Of course not.

You get an x-ray, find the root cause of your pain, and make adjustments immediately.

In the same way, you shouldn’t just think, “this will end in a few years when I’m in menopause; so I’ll just deal with the pain.”

This episode is going to be your heavy bleeding “x-ray”—let’s dive into what’s causing this painful; disruptive symptom and (most importantly) how you can get relief!

Okay ladies, this episode is a good one about all things youthful skin, and no, we aren't just talking about our faces. Our face isn't the only part of our body that could use a little extra rejuvenation. Yes, we all want to look and feel our best both in and out of the bedroom, but  this episode isn't just about "looks", that's the least important part of this conversation. There are actually many common struggles women of all ages and stages deal with "down there", that we just don't really talk about, because perhaps it feels like another one of those "taboo topics".

Cody invited Lana Kerr to be her guest today, because she is a true expert on this this field. Her revolutionary products have changed the lives of cancer patients, burn victims, post-pregnancy patients and more with their revitalizing healing properties. 19 Jul 20226 Ways To Advocate For Yourself At The Doctor's Office EP15000:34:13

Send us a text

Have you ever felt misunderstood or simply not heard at all by a doctor you pursued in an effort to feel better or find healing? Did you feel talked down to or less than, simply for raising concerns or asking questions? Have you ever been told that your Google search doesn’t trump their medical degree?

Trust-based patient-doctor relationships are the cornerstone of quality health care. Patients experience the best results when they are taken seriously and treated by a doctor they admire, respect, and who values them and their perspective. But as chronic illness has skyrocketed in recent years, the quality of care in the medical space has diminished greatly.

Still, this is no excuse for being bullied by someone in a white coat just because they have alphabet soup after their name. While this is not everyone’s experience, a growing number of people — women, especially — are experiencing medical gaslighting by their doctors, causing an overall and ominous distrust for the medical field.

On today's episode Cody shares her best tips to be your own best health advocate. She shares her own experiences as a patient and as a Health Practitioner, as well as some stories from YOU! If you’ve experienced being discounted, dismissed, or gaslit by your doctor, or if your concerns have been written off as “common,” “normal,” or “something everyone experiences,” you are not alone.

While stress is a normal part of everyday life, it can sometimes trigger a range of unpleasant symptoms that we’re quick to attribute to other ailments.

The brain-body relationship is complicated, and it can be a mystery why people manifest stress in different ways – headaches for you, but nausea for your neighbor. On today's episode Cody and guest Sarah Burden talk all about the sneaky ways stress shows up and what we can do about it.

06 Sep 2022How You've Been Taught Self-Defense Could Be All Wrong, Learn What Works! with Robyn Warner EP15700:36:16

Send us a text

Have you ever gone to a self-defense class? Usually it's because we want to learn how to fight, in case we are ever in a situation where we are being attacked. We want to feel like we can take our attackers down and get away, if needed!

The options for fight training are plentiful: Thai boxing, Brazilian jiujitsu, and mixed martial arts, boxing, karate, and tae kwon do. These types of trainings are great, but it takes years to learn how to knock a gun from a mugger’s hand or fight off multiple assailants. Traditional self-defense tends to fall into one of two categories. The first is learning how to fight. The second is learning a list of rules that women are told to follow, most of which start with “never”: Never go out alone at night. Never drink at parties. Never wear revealing clothing. Never talk to strangers.

But what if the way we traditionally think of self-defense is wrong?

on todays episode, Cody visits with Robyn Warner. Robyn is known on her instagram as @aflyonmywall. She's fun, she's cute, and she's relatable with her down-to-earth friendly personality. But Robyn is also an expert on self defense and is passionate about helping women to be prepared, not scared.

Robyn is a survivor of a brutal sexual assault, she shares her story and the strategies that helped her to survive. This is an episode that needs to be listened to by all women. Share this episode with all the girls in your life, because this information can literally save lives.

Robyn offers a self-defense safety course called S.A.F.E. Its a course that can be taken online or in person. Robyn has offered you, our It's Hertime listeners, a 40% discount on her trainings. just use the code MIXHERS. Thanks Robyn!

13 Sep 2022Period Mood Swings: Causes and Tips EP15800:19:23

Send us a text

We all know how annoying it can be when our friends or family members accuse us of being moody around our periods. But what if there's the teensiest bit of truth to their words? Or maybe even a ton of truth?

As much as we may not want to admit it, period mood swings are a real pms symptom. That's why when we're approaching "Red Tide Week," we tend to become a little more on-edge than usual. Things that wouldn't normally be a big deal might suddenly set us off (often to our own surprise as well as the surprise of every other person in the vicinity).

If you're tired of feeling like your premenstrual mood swings are completely out of your control, you'll be happy to know there may be some things you can do to minimize them. Cody will share with us in this episode things we need to understand about why they're happening in the first place. Contrary to what your brother used to tell you, your monthly mood swings are probably not an indication of severe mental disorders; more likely, they're just a premenstrual symptom. They can, however, impact your quality of life and your relationships.

Sotune in and take a deep dive into what's causing your Mr. Hyde episodes and how you can take better control of your emotional symptoms each month.

20 Sep 2022PCOS & Food: What To Eat EP15900:22:30

Send us a text

“What is the best diet for PCOS?” Is Paleo the best diet for PCOS? How about Low Carb? Keto? Vegan? Weight Watchers? Raw?”

PCOS is not an issue that can’t be solved by medication. Pharmaceuticals like metformin and the Pill can’t address root causes, but what you eat (and don’t eat) can. Eating the right types of food at the right times each month helps rebalance your reproductive hormones, stabilize insulin and blood sugar, and support your unique female biochemistry during each phase of your monthly menstrual cycle.

On today's episode, Cody shares everything we need to know about how we can use food to manage PCOS successfully. She answers the questions so many of us have about what foods  we should avoid and which foods we should focus on getting plenty of. What is the perfect diet for PCOS? Tune in and find out!

04 Oct 2022Mood Food: How To Fight Depression Naturally with Nutrition with guest Karalynne Call EP16100:47:31

Send us a text

Everyone has bad days, maybe even a string of bad days. Major depression is different. It’s like all color goes out of the rainbow. All oxygen goes out of the air. Everything is just… harder.

Mental health disorders are complex. So is the brain. And so are the foods we eat, and the ways our bodies interact with those foods. We’re still new to this game of figuring out exactly how the brain works, and exactly how nutrients may improve brain health. But, there are some very promising possibilities. Our brain is greedy. It needs a lot of energy to work properly and to create neurotransmitters - chemicals that send signals through the nervous system. Without enough energy or the right nutrients, our brain won’t get what it needs. In fact, one study suggests that eating a lot of nutrient-sparse processed foods could up our chances of becoming depressed by as much as 60 percent.

On today's episode, Cody visits with Karalynne Call, of Just Ingredients. Karalynne shares how she was able to fight depression naturally with nutrition.  She is a mom of six with a passion for better health and wellness within the home. She began her health journey nearly 15 years ago as she battled severe depression, and she has helped thousands of other people to begin their own health journey. She believes that nature provides the necessary nutrition in order for people to live healthy, happy lives full of energy. Her goal is to inspire others to make a change in their eating habits and daily product use, one ingredient at a time. Her personal story is inspiring and she's a wealth of knowledge.

11 Oct 2022Know Your Lemons: 12 Signs of Breast Cancer with Corinne Beaumont EP16200:44:06

Send us a text

You probably know that breast cancer is a major killer of women worldwide. You may even know that, every year, more than 245,000 women are diagnosed with the disease in the United States alone. And one in every eight women will develop breast cancer at some point during their lives. As your doctor (hopefully) tells you at checkups, it's important to perform monthly self-checks to screen yourself for this potentially lethal disease—but, do you know what to look for? The fact is, many women don’t.

On today's episode Cody and Corrine Beaumont, CEO and founder of the organization "Know Your Lemons",  help us learn about what breast cancer can look like (because lumps aren’t the only indicator that something’s wrong). Tune in to learn all about the 12 signs of breast cancer we need to be looking for. Also about how to perform self breast-exams and when to do our self-exams during our monthly cycle.

Early detection is the goal. According to the World Health Organization, a shocking one-third of deaths from breast cancer could be decreased if detected and treated early. This means nearly 400,000 lives could be saved every year. This is an episode you won't want to miss and you'll definitely want to share with all of the girls in your life.

About our guest:
When Corrine Beaumont lost her grandmothers to breast cancer, she wanted to know what she should be doing for her breast health, but wasn’t able to find information that simply answered the basic questions. As a designer, she decided to do something about the lack of engaging information available. So she moved to London, got a PhD in patient communication and tested and refined the best ways to educate breast health information for a diverse audience. Later on when her close friend died from the disease, she left her job as a business professor, and started the charity with her own savings. In 2017, Corinne founded the Know Your Lemons Foundation, a global charity with a groundbreaking campaign teaching women all over the world the signs and symptoms of breast cancer in a unique and visual way.

08 Nov 2022How Your Feet Can Help You Heal: Foot Zoning with Shae Durbin EP16600:43:03

Send us a text

Foot Zoning is the science of balancing, rejuvenating and detoxifying the body through the signal system in the feet. Although it is a treatment on the physical body, Foot Zoning  also balances the mental and emotional bodies to bring all systems into harmony. A foot zone uses a process of analyzing to determine what is felt through the signals in the feet. Areas in the body that contain imbalances can be discovered.

A Foot Zoning Practitioner can detect residues and disturbances from food, drink, eating habits, chemicals, heavy metals, food additives, and drugs; as well as the presence of foreign living organisms such as parasites, viruses, bacteria, and fungus. Emotional and mental disturbances can also be detected during Foot Zoning.

This all might sound a little crazy, but there is a lot of growing scientific evidence that shows that Foot Zoning is a very effective tool that can be used to assist our body with healing.

On today's episode, Cody has invited her own personal Foot Zone Practitioner, Shae Durbin, to share all about how using this effective healing tool can help us understand how each cell in our body has a signal on our feet, and by accessing the signal, the cells are prompted at a DNA level to repair and renew themselves. The process of Zone Zoning acts as a catalyst and a guide for the body to awaken its natural self-healing capabilities. Working with Shae, using Foot Zoning, has been a complete game-changer for Cody in her health journey. That's why she is so excited to share this information with all of you.

You can connect with Shae by email: shaesweatfield@gmail.com.

29 Nov 2022How Herthrive Relieves Menopausal Symptoms: Deep Dive with Cody EP16900:20:43

Send us a text

Every woman deserves to have a health span that matches her lifespan. In midlife, we get a second chance to change course if we need to….and give our body what it needs to thrive. As we age, our hormone levels naturally shift. As this shift happens, some of us may experience fluctuations with our cycles…or we can experience those steep declines as we hit menopause. These hormonal changes can lead to more than uncomfortable and frustrating symptoms such as sleeplessness, mood swings, vaginal dryness and vaginal atrophy, hot flashes, and changes in the appearance of our skin.

On today's episode, Cody does a deep into how to thrive through menopause. She shares what she's learned about what we all can do to thrive during this stage of life. Instead of seeing the symptoms mentioned above as inevitable, we can see them for what they are. They’re simply our body’s way of saying, “I’m not getting what I need.”

One thing we do need is nutritional support by some very powerful ingredients called phytoestrogens. Mother nature seems to have created phytoestrogens just for us girls, because they help us stay healthy and feel amazing during every phase of our life.

Introducing Herthrive! The right nutrients can relieve your menopausal symptoms and help your body feel and act younger.

Herthrive was born from a crusade Cody has been on for the last 5 years to learn as much as she can  about this transitional time in every woman’s life known as menopause. She wants to know and to show what’s truly possible as we grow older. As an almost 50 year old woman, Cody is knocking on menopause’s door. Her mission is to transform the popular perception of menopause from one of dread to what it truly can be: the most empowering and pleasurable phase of a woman’s life.

Herthrive available on December 5, 2022!!

13 Dec 2022Burnout: Prevention, Signs and How To Beat It with Lisa Dunlap EP17100:52:06

Send us a text

Did you know that women are more likely than men to report having a great deal of stress, and almost half of all women say their stress has increased over the past five years (compared to 39-percent of men).

Worst of all, stress is uniquely hard on women and our reproductive hormones. On today's episode Cody invited Lisa Dunlop to join her in talking all about  what you need to know about how stress affects your health, your hormones and your life.  They also share helpful tips on how you can protect yourself from the damaging effects of stress, and eventual burnout.

More about Lisa Dunlop:
Lisa Dunlap AGPCNP, is a burnout coach, holistic nurse practitioner, public speaker and mom-preneur. She helps high achieving women in healthcare restore and revive themselves so they can reignite their spark and have more fun. Lisa had to almost die in order to wake up , heal from burnout and start living a life she loved. Now the women she coaches, don't have to wait for rock-bottom to heal. While working on the frontlines of the pandemic as a Hospice NP and juggling two small children at home she saw the critical need for women in healthcare to prioritize their mental health. She founded Nurse Your Soul, after she transformed her own rock-bottom burnout, debilitating pain, and potentially life threatening diagnosis into spontaneous healing and living her dream life. She quit her 14- year career as a nurse, and started Nurse Your Soul to empower nurses with practical tools to get unstuck. As a certified herbalist, clinical aromatherapist, reflexologist, energy healer, and trained in mindfulness and self-compassion her coaching targets the mind-body and spirit. In the 18 months since Nurse Your Soul began, Lisa has helped 100s of nurses prioritize themselves and overcome burnout. She has spoken in front of several nursing organizations and delivered workplace wellness programs to various healthcare organizations across America. She interviews experts in the field on her weekly LIVE show , “Resilience Insights.” She has been featured in Authority Magazine, interviewed by the Discovery Channel, The Doctor Nurse Podcast, Stress Free Soulutions, Dose of Support, Don’t Eat Your Young, & Finding Balance in Your Business, Career, Finances & Health.

27 Dec 2022Happiness is Habitual: How To Build Habits That Really Make YOU Happier EP17300:37:26

Send us a text

Have you ever wondered why some people seem to get so much done and know how to develop good habits?  When they say, ”I’m going to…” start exercising, eat healthily, get organized, read more, etc., they make it happen.

But when you try to go after similar goals, it’s a different story.

You might be able to stick to them for a while, but then, somewhere along the way, you always lose your motivation and quit.

When that happens enough times, it’s easy to get frustrated and discouraged.

But creating and sustaining good habits doesn’t have to be so difficult and painful.

In fact, it can be quite easy. And even a lot of fun.

On today's episode, Cody shares how to go about setting the right goals to create healthy and happy habits so that they will stick. It's all about getting clear on what really matters to you and making sure these goals and habits align with your biggest priorities in your life.

During 2022, Mixhers has had a tag line "Happiness is Habitual", we have loved having this as our focus and we want to use the positive momentum created this year to propel us into the new year, 2023 being the year that we are the healthiest and happiest people we can be!

03 Jan 2023Consistency Is The Key To Balanced and Happy Hormones: How To Make It Easy! EP17400:41:25

Send us a text

Consistency is one of our most powerful tools. It helps power us through the day-to-day so we can reach our goals. It can also make tougher routines become more automatic, triggering action, which in turn boosts motivation. But, why do we all struggle to stay consistent?

On today's episode Cody introduces us to a new and exciting tool that will actually make being consistent much easier and enjoyable. Mixhers has a new app!

Cody invited Greta Ballif, Mixhers Brand Director, to tell us all about what makes the Mixhers app so special and how it can help support each of our lives, to help us improve our health and happiness, which is at the heart of why Mixhers created this app for you.

The Mixhers app will help us to track our health and cycle each day, and it will also help us be better able to understand what's really going on in real time with our moods, energy, sex-drive, sleep and more. The Mixhers app helps us to work with our hormones each day, (with nutrition, exercise, supplementation and lifestyle) rather than working against them, which often leads to frustration and keeps us from staying consistent. Now, we will know what nutrition and exercise strategies we can implement each day to support us best, depending on what phase of our monthly cycle we are in.

The more consistent we are with using the Mixhers app, the more customized our individual experience will be. Having the app is like having a Health  Coach in our pocket. We'll not only be able to use the app to track our cycle, but we'll also have access to coaching and learn so much about our unique bodies and what best supports our health.

App will officially release on January 4, 2023. Download this free tool and benefit from all that it can offer! Go to your app store and search for the Mixhers app, you'll be guided through the entire set up.

17 Jan 2023Sick of Getting Sick? 7 Ways To Keep Your Immune System and You, Healthy EP17600:28:40

Send us a text

Our immune system defends our body against illness and disease. It’s a complex system that includes the skin cells, blood, bone marrow, tissues, and organs that — when working the way they should — protect our body against potentially harmful pathogens (things like bacteria and viruses), and limit damage that happens from noninfectious agents (like sunburn or cancer).

To best protect our body from harm, every component of our immune system needs to perform exactly according to plan. The best way we can ensure this happens is to practice the "good-for-us' behaviors our immune system runs on every day.

In this episode Cody helps us understand out immune system better and share seven ways to keep our immune system healthy.

Send us a text

You may have noticed there are times in your cycle where your motivation and physical stamina are lacking when it comes to your fitness routine. No matter how motivating your trainer is, while telling you to push through one more rep or the Peloton instructor is saying “push”… you may just find that there are times where you just aren’t feeling that motivation. This isn’t because you’re lazy. Instead, the secret lies in your unique female monthly cycle and what day of the month it is for you. On today’s episode, Cody discusses the science of how to exercise with your cycle, to achieve your fitness and wellness goals.

Implementing the strategies, shared in today's episode, we can support our hormones so that they work with us and not against us to take our fitness goals to the next level. It’s seriously a game-changer when we know how to tap into our female super-powers all month long!

21 Mar 2023Understanding Endometriosis: Causes, Complications and Solutions with Ana Gonzalez Herrera EP18500:44:53

Send us a text

Endometriosis, a condition where tissue that behaves like the lining of the womb is found outside the uterus, and causes severe and debilitating period pain. It affects more than 6.5 million women in the US, yet there is still so much confusion around its causes, symptoms and treatments.

On today's episode, Cody invites Ana Gonzalez Herrera, who is the founder of Hormone University. After 5 surgeries and endless tears of pain and boxes of Ibuprofen with stage IV endometriosis, Ana made it her mission to be her own best health advocate. She believes that the more you know, the more you can do to avoid medical (or other) interventions which might not be right for you, and the more you can take control of your health.

This is an important episode, because adding to the agony of endo, many women don’t end up getting diagnosed until later in life, if at all, because so many physicians simply pass off their symptoms as period pain. This lack of acknowledgement leaves the women living with chronic endo pain feeling helpless and unheard.

Share this episode with the girls in your life. Chances are you know a woman suffering with endometriosis, we are 1 in 10, so the chances are high.

04 Apr 2023Adrenal Fatigue vs. Low Thyroid: How to Tell the Difference EP18700:27:25

Send us a text

Does this sounds familiar: You feel exhausted, but you can't sleep. Your weight is creeping up, but you don't have the energy to work out or cook. You're irritable and anxious, and you’re noticing more hair on the bathroom floor. It could be adrenal fatigue or low thyroid or… both. But how can you tell the difference?

Adrenal fatigue and low thyroid conditions can cause similar symptoms—but there are significant differences too. Both can be frustrating and seriously disrupt your quality of life. But there is hope, and you can feel better and enjoy your life again! The trick is getting the right support, and that starts by narrowing down exactly what's happening in your body.

In this episode, Cody teaches us how to spot the differences between adrenal fatigue (and why this isn't exactly the correct term) and hypothyroidism, the signs and symptoms of both, and how they are diagnosed, so we can get the help we need to feel like ourselves again.

11 Apr 2023Is The MTHFR Gene Mutation Messing With You? with Phil's My Pharmacist EP18800:53:12

Send us a text

Genes are the specific instructions that make you who you are. They are sections of DNA, your body’s master manual, and at the latest estimate, there are around 20,000 genes in the human genome. But genes, like humans, are imperfect, and often have mutations or variations that can cause everything from eye color to hair curl to whether you can curl your tongue.

These mutations can also predispose you to certain health conditions and diseases, cause you to metabolize medications too quickly or too slowly, and mess with the way your body manages complex biochemical processes, including enzyme production.

One of those genes, called the MTHFR gene, can have a mutation that can specifically interfere with your ability to absorb certain vitamins and detox the body efficiently. About 40% of us have this mutation, and it can predispose you to health issues.

In this episode Cody invites Phillip Cowley, aka Phil's My Pharmacist to chat on what it’s all about, and what we can do about it.

Phil Cowley, is a real life pharmacist, who is stepping out from behind the counter and is showing up all over Instagram and TikTok! He’s getting attention for his simple and straight-forward pharmaceutical hacks. He’s informational, he’s inspirational, he’s our friendly social media pharmacist! He knows a lot about many health issues, but personally knows the importance of understanding the MTHFR gene mutation, because it has had an impact on he and his wives ability to conceive. Tune into hear more.

This episode is fun and informative and is definitely an episode to share with the girls in your life!

Making a baby may seem straightforward, but if you’ve ever tried and struggled to conceive—or witnessed one of your girlfriends endure the experience—then you know getting pregnant isn’t always so simple.

In the United States, 12 percent of women between the ages of 15 and 44 have impaired fertility, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That’s over 7 million women who want to get pregnant and can’t.

A number of factors work against us in our journey to motherhood, including exposure to environmental chemicals, long-term exposure to hormonally-disruptive medications, micronutrient deficiencies, and chronic stress.

In this episode, Cody shares the hopeful news that women can work to optimize their fertility through food, movement, and lifestyle. Women who want to be mothers can take steps now to preserve and enhance their fertility.

Even if we are not a mother, we can hone into the superpower of being able to instinctively feel things through a deep-rooted evolutionary perspective that we know as a “motherly instinct”.  It's in all of us. There is so much we can do as women to use our voice and to be a force for positive change.

On today's episode, Cody interviews two remarkable women who have been protecting the vulnerable & empowering the marginalized for more than 30 years.

02 May 2023Understanding Postpartum Anxiety and Depression with guest Megan Johnson of The Emily Effect Foundation EP19100:35:08

Send us a text

“The two most powerful words when we're in struggle: me too." –Brené Brown

Pregnancy and childbirth can be a vulnerable time in your life. You may experience depression and anxiety while you are pregnant or after you give birth. And you may not be sure how to get the help that you need to cope with these common challenges.

On today's episode Cody invites Megan Johnson, the Co-Founder of The Emily Effect Foundation and Licensed Therapist to share what she wishes everyone knew about depression and anxiety during and after pregnancy—including when, why, and how to find the help you need.

Did you know that 50% to 80% of all women who deliver a child experience the mood shifts known as "the baby blues?" And that 1 in 3 experience postpartum depression  and 1 in 5 will develop a more serious case of postpartum mood disorder?

These facts can be scary and confusing, especially right after your baby arrives.

Megan shares her sister Emily Cook Dyches' story. Emily was diagnosed and treated for postpartum depression and anxiety. She was treated for the illness for several months. During the process she and her family found pockets of very good help, but as a whole the journey felt frustrating because the resources available seemed disjointed. In short, there were many times they felt like they had exhausted every one of their options and simply didn’t have anywhere else to turn. After Emily lost her life as a result of postpartum anxiety, the family  created The Emily Effect Foundation and website to raise awareness and coordinate local resources for maternal mental health.

09 May 2023When Is the Best Time to Test Sex Hormone Levels? Part One EP19200:24:22

Send us a text

When you’re trying to figure out why you feel so crappy every month, it can be so frustrating trying to get access to the appropriate doctors and especially to the appropriate tests. It can be even more frustrating to suffer terrible symptoms and yet have no diagnosis because your bloodwork comes back “normal.” Part of the problem is that you simply don’t know when is the best time to test hormone levels. And, honestly some doctors don’t always know either.

Cody is doing a deep-dive for us, where she is outlining some of the more common testing recommendations for women. She wants all of us girls, to feel empowered in our hormonal health, to know what tests are right for you, what tests are available, and especially to know WHEN is the best time to test to truly understand the root causes of your hormone imbalance.

This episode is part one, in this episode we will learn how to understand how and when to test our sex hormones.

16 May 2023When is the Best Time to Test Other Hormone Levels? Part 2 EP19300:22:57

Send us a text

Your sex hormones aren’t the only ones you may need to look at to understand the cause of your hormone symptoms. On today's episode Cody does a deep-dive into when to test your other hormone levels like insulin, cortisol, thyroid hormones, etc.

Many women experience resistance to their request to have comprehensive hormone testing. It’s an understatement to say that it can be so frustrating trying to get access to the appropriate doctors and to the appropriate tests. And, then it can be even more frustrating to get your bloodwork done and have it come back as “normal” when you know that your symptoms are anything but normal! The biggest problem to getting a correct diagnosis is that it’s not always understood when is the best time to test our hormone levels.

In last week’s episode, Cody covered all about how to know when to test your sex hormones as women. In this episode Cody will be going over our other hormone levels like insulin, cortisol, thyroid hormones, etc.

More than anything, Cody wants you ladies to feel empowered to know what tests are available, what you can be asking for and especially to know WHEN is the best time to test. You’ll want to take notes!

So many of us live in a chronically stressed state, and we don't know how to break this health destroying cycle. Yoga therapy can help us activate our parasympathetic nervous system state, where we need to be to rest, digest and heal.

20 Jun 2023Personal Growth Looks Good On You! with Gina Trimmer EP19801:03:51

Send us a text

So many women look at personal growth & development as another thing to prove their worthiness. But real growth is about letting go of what no longer serves us. It is about removing burdens, obligations, and misperceptions of our worth.

When we remove what is no longer needed, we create space to manifest what we want, focus on the things that matter, and fully enjoy our life and work.

And there are a lot of things we carry around that we no longer need: beliefs, behaviors, unworthy thinking, relationships, unhelpful habits, burdens, and more. Personal growth & development for women is about “doing” and “being” less, not more.

When we are operating from worthy thinking, we can look at personal growth & development as an enrichment process. We aren’t inherently “not enough”, but instead we are just enriching the greatness already inside of us and aligning our life and work with this greatness.

On today's episode, Cody invites Personal Development expert, Gina Trimmer to share her thoughts and tips on personal growth.

Gina and her family went from living the "American Dream" life to losing it all in the recession. In what they thought was the darkest time, they made the decision to change all of those bad habits of overspending and consumerism into budgeting and saving every penny. This "new" lifestyle allowed them the opportunity to invest and create multiple businesses that made it possible {6 years later} for them to retire by the age of 34/36 and spend the next years traveling across the world, hitting over 40 countries and having endless adventures along the way.

They settled back down in Utah while Gina was pregnant with her youngest son, but they have plans to begin traveling long-term again in July 2023! Gina documented her travels on her wildly popular IG @pure.imperfection. She has recently transitioned to the Podcaster life and you can find her podcast IG at @revitalizedwomanhood.

Gina is passionate about personal development, creating community, and empowering women. She is the founder of Revitalized Womanhood, which aims to promote all three of these ideals and so much more. You can learn all about Revitalized Womanhood and the private community of the Revitalized Sisterhood at www.revitalizedwomanhood.com

05 Sep 2023ADHD and Hormones EP20900:24:18

Send us a text

ADHD in adult women has increased dramatically over the last couple of years. Sometimes the diagnosis is missed when a woman is young, and she’s diagnosed later in life. Other times ADHD is misdiagnosed as anxiety, depression, PMS. Or symptoms are simply overlooked because ADHD presents differently in women compared with men.

In addition, symptoms of ADHD in women might exacerbate during times of hormonal fluctuation, either throughout the monthly cycle or during a particular life phase such as puberty, pregnancy, or menopause.

If you have ADHD, or have a woman in your life who does, you may have asked these questions:

  • Why is my ADHD worse on some days?
  • Why is my ADHD worse on my period?
  • Can ADHD medication affect your period?
  • How does estrogen affect ADHD?

Cody answers these questions and so much more in today's episode. Once we understand our hormones, and the changes they undergo, we can begin to see the connection with our symptoms. This is an empowering place from which to make lifestyle change.

10 Oct 2023Setting Healthy Boundaries For a Happy Life! with Susie Pettit EP21400:50:13

Send us a text

We all need to set them—on today's episode we talk about what that means to set healthy boundaries and how to do it right.

Join Cody and her  invited guest Susie Pettit,  to learn about how living and working with boundaries gives us the freedom to live life on our terms while boosting well-being, reducing stress levels, and increasing productivity at work and home.

About our guest:
Susie Pettit has been helping women live lives they love for over 20 years. She is the podcast host of the Love Your Life Show, offers the super successful Parenting Teens Survival Course and runs a monthly membership for Midlife Warriors. She is a certified Parent, Life + Wellness Coach and a mom of 5 sons ages 18-25.

Susie is passionate about helping women live lives that feel as good on the inside as they look on the outside. She spent more than half her life living a life she did not love; as a people pleaser and codependent perfectionist. She reflects that it’s as if she was trying to win an award for ‘Martyr of the Year’.

Luckily she hit rock bottom and now has the breadth of experience to teach first hand about setting healthy boundaries, beating your inner critic, conscious parenting, and how to use mindfulness-based tools to beat overwhelm and anxiety. She uses two foundational frameworks: Her 5 Pillars of Wellness and the Thought Model.

17 Oct 202328 Days vs 24 Hours – A Big Way Women and Men Differ Day to Day EP21500:23:06

Send us a text

Some weeks you’re on - you’re crushing it at work, you’re killing it in the gym, and you have energy after work to meet up with friends or to engage in leisure activities you love. But other weeks? Not so much. You have to drag yourself out of bed, you feel like you’re phoning it in at work and during workouts, and after work, you crash on the sofa and stare at the ceiling.

If that describes you, you’re probably (and rightfully) frustrated by these swings in mood, productivity, and energy. And being the wickedly intelligent woman that you are, you’ve probably set out to try to fix them.

Maybe you’ve tried to journal or a to-do list app. Maybe you bought an inspiring day planner, hoping that the beautiful pages would zap you into action. Maybe you read one of the million books out there on time management or productivity secrets. . But none of those things have worked—or will work in the future.

Why?

Because traditional time management strategies don’t work for women. On today's episode, Cody talks about how these external “solutions” force us to follow the 24-hour circadian cycle and they ignore a woman’s natural, 28-day hormone clock. We’ve been taught to plan our lives on the 24-hour circadian schedule, which works well for men—but not for women.

With most time management systems, we’re expected to make to-do lists, check things off as the day goes by, and then wake up the next day and repeat. Every day, every 24 hours, the same thing. But when women are forced to function as if their natural 28-day hormone clock doesn’t exist, we miss out on the superpower granted to us by our hormones.

24 Oct 2023Breast Cancer: Awareness Into Action with Corrine Ellsworth Beaumont EP21600:46:33

Send us a text

Breast cancer awareness is important, but breast cancer awareness put into action is an even more powerful prevention  and treatment tool. As women, we deserve to feel empowered through easily accessible education.

We know we are supposed to do monthly breast exams, but do we all feel confident about what that should actually look like? What are we looking and feeling for? What are the 12 signs and symptoms that we should all be aware of? What healthy nutrition and lifestyle strategies can we implement to help support prevention and get us through treatment if we are diagnosed with breast cancer? What effective tools are available for us? There's so much for us to learn, it can sometimes feel so overwhelming.

On today's episode, Cody has invited guest Corrine Ellsworth Beaumont, Co-Founder and CEO of Know Your Lemons, to help us feel less overwhelmed and to instead help us feel equipped to  be our own best health advocates.

As the CEO of Know Your Lemons, a non-profit saving lives through creative breast health education for early detection, she's been busy inspiring people to take charge of their breast health in the hopes of increasing the odds of early breast cancer detection.

When discovered in its earliest stage, breast cancer survival rates are nearly 100%. When symptoms chronically go unnoticed, however, the odds of overcoming late stage breast cancer are nearly insurmountable. That’s the vital difference between early and late detection. And, most often, it’s a distinction that comes down to knowledge and education — which is where Corrine’s organization gets its hands dirty creating powerful designs that educate, empower, and transcend.

Mixhers and Know Your Lemons have joined forces for a second year. Together we  have created a free ebook available to download and we are committed to raise money to support early detection for breast cancer. You can help! Mixhers will be donating 5% of all Mixhers sales from October 23 - October 29, 2023.

When it comes to female reproductive health, many women know the basics – estrogen and progesterone somehow work together to create a 28 day menstrual cycle every month until menopause. In reality, these hormones are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to female hormonal health.

many people don’t realize the extent of the work that these mighty molecules do day in and day out. We tend to think they only are on duty during puberty or pregnancy. When in reality, they’re working around the clock.

05 Dec 2023How To Fix The Hormones That Control Your Weight EP22200:28:36

Send us a text

Nothing is more frustrating than making lifestyle changes to support your health and lose a little weight, only to find that nothing changes despite your efforts. Everywhere you look, new fad diets, shots or workout programs seem to bring about dramatic transformations. So why don't they work for you?

It may be related to a hormone imbalance.

On today's episode, Cody is going to talk about how to fix the hormones that control your weight. The dirty little secret of the billion-dollar weight loss industry is that despite what you've heard, eating less and moving more isn't always the key to weight loss success. And a lot of the time, the more you try to restrict or over-exercise, the worse things can get. While it’s true that some people’s weight loss does require a caloric deficit, achieving it is much easier said than done, especially when hormones are out of balance.

If this sounds familiar, it's time to look at the possibility that a hormonal imbalance is contributing to your weight loss resistance. And it is certainly time for the arm chair (or weight bench) medical experts to calm down with their shame and blame tactics because when it comes to women’s metabolic health and body composition—hormones are everything.

Robert Whitfield "Dr. Rob" is known as the Breast Implant Expert". He has been a plastic surgeon for 26 years and board-certified for over 16 years. He specializes in Breast Implant Illness (BII), breast implant removal surgery and advanced cosmetic procedures.

In addition to his exceptional work as a surgeon, Dr. Rob is a sought-after provider for his Breast Implant Illness Program (HARP). The protocols of HARP help to reduce systemic inflammation and assist patients who are both preparing or recovering from surgery. Dr. Rob's skills dovetail into a perfect balance of art and science and provide hope to scores of women looking to restore their health after BII.

Throughout the episode, Cody and Dr. Whitfield dive into how Breast Implant Illness starts in the body, and how it is first detected. They highlight how important it is to take a look into one's own genetics first before making any decision of having implants, especially if the person's genes does not permit it to detoxify huge amounts of toxins, which was the case for Cody.

Some of the topics they discuss are:

  • How foreign bodies (implants of any kind) trigger inflammation
  • Things that Make the Body Capable of Handling Inflammation
  • Hormonal metabolism and estrogen dominance
  • Ways Implants Get Contaminated
  • Explant Procedures, and why they are needed
  • Minimizing the Inflammatory State during preparation and the explant operation proper
