18 Sep 2024Back to School Vision Check: How To Spot Hidden Eye Problems In Kids00:25:29

In this episode of *It’s Good to See You: Eye Health, Vision Care & More*, Dr. Rupa Wong, board certified pediatric ophthalmologist, discusses how parents and teachers can spot early signs of vision problems in children. As kids head back to school, their vision plays a critical role in academic performance and overall well-being. Dr. Rupa breaks down common vision issues, the key warning signs to look for, and the importance of early detection in ensuring your child’s success both in and out of the classroom.

**Key Takeaways**:

- **Why Vision Matters for Learning**: Vision is critical to classroom success—around 80% of learning is visual, making healthy eyes essential for academic achievement.

- **Common Vision Problems in Children**: Myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism, amblyopia (lazy eye), and strabismus (crossed eyes) are the most common issues that can impact a child’s ability to learn.

- **Signs to Watch For**: Parents and teachers should look out for children squinting, sitting too close to the board, excessive blinking, frequent headaches, and avoiding reading or close-up work.

- **The Importance of Early Detection**: Catching and treating vision issues early can prevent long-term problems, improve academic performance, and even enhance a child’s confidence in school.

**Statistics Mentioned**:

- 1 in 4 children has an undiagnosed vision problem that may impact their learning.

- Myopia affects about 42% of children aged 5-17, and its prevalence is increasing due to factors like increased screen time and reduced outdoor activity.

**Tips for Parents**:

- Schedule regular comprehensive eye exams for your child, especially before the school year starts.

- Follow the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet away to reduce eye strain.

- Pay attention to any changes in your child’s behavior or academic performance that could signal a vision issue.

**Resources Mentioned**:

- American Academy of Ophthalmology recommendations for children’s eye exams.

- Study from *Ophthalmology* on the rising prevalence of myopia in children.

It takes practice and a clear understanding of your values to hold firm in your decisions.  Completely disregarding those around you is not the answer, but a careful systematic review of the power of those opinions is essential for ensuring you are remaining authentic to yourself.

13 Dec 2022Outsourcing Domestic Tasks for Better Work Life Balance00:28:00

Do you have trouble managing it all? Kids, school, meals, work. Part of you feels like you *should* be able to somehow have the time and energy to do all the things but you can’t and you’re feeling spread thin and unhappy? Somehow, justifying spending money on help feels elitist and privileged and wasteful, but it’s not.

If you’re a professional, working woman, then there is a simple solution to this.  It’s utilizing paid help at home - whether in the form of domestic help or a personal assistant. A recent article came out that women in the C-suite pay for help at home and many are loathe to admit it - as if somehow it’s possible to be a high ranking leader in your organization, physician, attorney, whatever you do and pick the kids up from school, cook dinner, make cupcakes for the bake sale, organize holiday cards and on and on without help.

I’m here to tell you that there is nothing shameful about paying for help. In fact , in order to likely be at the point you want to in your career and be at home for the moments that are important for your family - you must delegate.

I’m sharing and telling you exactly what I delegate and outsource weekly, monthly and quarterly in this episode. It’s time to normalize having help - whether it’s housekeepers, nannies, house managers or babysitters.

29 Nov 2022How To Manage Jealousy And Envy00:23:26

Envy is one of those emotions that most of us all experience. Yet none of us wants to admit. Do your friends seem more advanced in their careers? Have better work-life balance? Seem to have built their business faster than you? And the holiday season can most definitely elicit these feelings.

Jealousy and envy can consume your thoughts and create a cycle of negativity, affecting your own perception of yourself and distracting yourself from your goals and journey.

I fell prey to this cycle many times - in school, graduate school and even in private practice. In my personal and professional life. So, if this is something you want to change - if you want better ways of managing and overcoming these emotions, then take a listen to this episode.

In this episode, I discuss:

  • Utilizing a win-win mentality (from The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey)
  • Competing with yourself instead of others
  • What you can learn from what others have accomplished (without feeling negatively about yourself in the process)
  • And more!

21 Nov 20234 Strategies for Managing Holiday Stress As a Perfectionist00:25:38

Holiday time - it’s a whirlwind of family, cooking, parties and it continues for a month. You’re told you’re supposed to be feeling gratitude, happiness and togetherness but sometimes the holiday season can be anything but that. It can be fraught with difficult family dynamics, an attempt to balance work and the season’s activities and perhaps even your own perfectionism in attempting to create a Pinterest worthy Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner.

If any of this sounds familiar to you and you're somewhat dreading the upcoming holiay season, then this episode is for you! I share 4 strategies to help you:

  • Prioritize what's important
  • Use a cope ahead technique to manage awkward or triggering encounters
  • Schedule your non-time

Let's get started!

07 Jun 202250th Episode Q&A : Work-Life Balance to Negotiating As A Woman00:22:52

Can you believe it? I have officially published 50 episode and I am sho thrilled you are here celebrating with us. Today, I'm answering your questions that all seem to have a similar pattern - topics of work-life balance, negotiating as a woman, and being heard as a professional working woman. I share details about my own personal struggles that I knkow you can relate to! Tune in to get all the details.

Question #1: Omg - you do so much! You have 3 kids, you work, you seem to be doing so many things. Are you superwoman?

We talk about work-life balance and how I get it all done.

  1. Outsource everything that doesn't require my specific high decision making capacity
  2. Follow the 80/20 Rule - Paretto's Principle. Become laser focused on the 20% of your actions that are yielding 80% of your results and eliminate the remainder. I go deep on this rule in Episode

Question #2: I feel talked over at meetings by my male colleagues and it’s so frustrating. I don’t think I can ever advance in my department if my ideas aren’t heard

I discuss the following 2 ways to help mitigate this from happening

  1. Amplification - the concept of another woman in the room repeating your comment and crediting you as a source, helps prevent others from taking credit.
  2. Upstander -

Question #3: I feel exhausted after work. I can’t even imagine work-life balance. I am just finished residency and don’t even know where to begin.

The importance of finding time for rest and rejuvenation cannot be overstated. And, it can start small - with just 5 minutes or 10 minutes a day.  Something you can control to build some recovery into your day

Question #4: I am interested ASCs and buying in, haven’t seen many resources on this and I’m sure more men are offered these opportunities ore than women

What is at the heart of this question - is how to negotiate as a woman. How do you show your worth and what you bring to the table without turning people off.

Practicing a collaborative approach with facts as to how your participation would improve the business and community at large is a first step.

05 Jul 2022Live In Your Zone Of Genius: Why You Need A Virtual Assistant00:26:50

Want to know the best thing I’ve ever done to maximize my productivity, efficiency, and effectiveness (all while decreasing my burnout?). The answer is simple! I hired a virtual assistant.

This single thing is the biggest productivity tip and time management leson that I can give.

As a working professional, mom of 3 and small business owner for the past 14 years, I’ve basically white knuckled my way through all the admin tasks. I just figured I can do something - so why pay someone else to do it? From reconciling my own Quickbooks, to editing my own Youtube videos and managing my own calendar, I was doing all the things and it was leaving me burned out because I was working in my Zone of Competence (or Incompetence) or heck even Drudgery.

But, it is possible to consistently occupy your Zone of Genius. Once you start offloading and delegating tasks and  in this episode I’m going to step you through how to do so with your virtual assistant.

Show Highlights include:

  • The various zones (Zone of Genius, Zone of Excellence, Zone Competence, Zone of Incompetence) and figurint out which zone you're working and living in most of the tie (03:33)
  • The importance of operating in your Zone of Genius to propel your businesses first (04:15)
  • The biggest mistake I see people make when they are contemplating hiring a virtual assistant is not recognizaing their own worth and the value of their time (09:37)
  • Why time is more valuable than money (10:28)
  • The different kinds of virtual assistants you can employ for your specific needs - executive, task based, social media, copywriting, video editing, graphic design, medical assistant, etc (12:03)
  • How to formulate your delegation task list so that you discover which type of VA is right for you (15:58)
  • The importance of creating systems and work flows with your virtual assistant (16:59)
  • The necessary mindset shifts that are required prior to hiring a virtual assistant - that you don't have to do it all and in fact someone might be able to do it better than you! (18:11)
  • Using a task management system to onboard and train your virtual assistant (24:00)

01 Nov 2022How To Start Serial Tasking Instead of Multi-Tasking To Increase Productivity and Decrease Stress00:23:24

You’ve got so many balls in the air - kids, work online courses, your charity work - you must be an expert multi-tasker, how do you do it?

And here’s the thing - I used to pride myself on multi-tasking. I thought it was my super power. It felt good to say oh wow - I can juggle this many balls in the air, it makes you feel empowered, productive and successful.

Until it doesn’t. Until you just start to feel stressed out and overwhelmed by doing so much all at the same time.

So I discovered a better way and I wanted to share that with you - it’s the art of serial tasking instead of multi tasking to increase productivity and decrease stress.

And guess what? Today’s episode is actually an encore episode. Because I recognized in advance that these 2 weeks at the end of October were super busy and I was tempted to resort to my old ways of trying to do all the things all at once.

So I needed this reminder for myself and I thought it might be helpful for you. And, what better way to introduce an episode on why multi-tasking is not the answer then ensuring that I myself am not multi-tasking currently by trying to record a new episode while simultaneously working on 4 presentations?

aloha,

Dr. Rupa

  8. Outsourcing and delegating doesn’t make you less than
  9. Being constantly disappointed in others only negatively affects you. Either let it go or let the relationship go

17 May 2022Changing Jobs Mid Life00:23:06
You've heard of the "Forty Under 40" Lists, but what about the "Forty Over 40"? When is it too late to change careers, start a side hustle or reenter the work force after time with the kids?

In this episode, host, Dr. Rupa Wong discusses that it never is too late. She uses these famous examples to illustrate

  • Vera Wang was 40 when she opened her first bridal salon in New York
  • Julia Child wrote her first cookbook at the age of 50
  • Tina Turner achieved her first and only #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 at the age of 45 (It was "What's Love Got to Do with It")

3 reasons why women are perfectly poised to make these transitions later in life:

1. Connections and networking

2. Life experience and a thorough knowledge of who we are and our core values

3. Transferrable skills

She also discusses the 3 things you should make sure to do if contemplating making a career transition mid life.

1. Recognize Impostor Syndrome is real

2. Find a mentor

3. Have a contingency plan
