30 Oct 2023 | S1. Ep36 Men's Emotional Health After Retirement: Exploring the Benefits of The Men's Shed Organization with Stephen Look" | 00:25:53
S1. Ep36 Men's Emotional Health After Retirement: Exploring the Benefits of The Men's Shed Organization with Stephen Look" Relationship breakdown, retrenchment or early retirement from a job, loss of children following divorce, physical or mental illness…. These are just some of the problems that men may find difficult to deal with on their own. Most older men in particular have grown up in a culture where they don’t talk about feelings and emotions, don’t generally ask for help, and seldom take a vested interest in their own health and well-being. And it’s probably because of this, that many older men are less healthy than women, drink more, take more risks, and suffer more from isolation, loneliness, and depression. And that is why, we’re excited to have Stephen Look joining us today to talk about a wonderful worldwide organization called The Mens Shed. For those unfamiliar with Men’s Sheds, they promote healthy aging by providing an avenue for men to be productive, contribute to the community, connect with friends, and maintain an active body and mind, all in an atmosphere of old-fashioned mate-ship. ……. Stephen, a quirky ex-air traffic controller who doesn't like flying, is a secretary at Carina Men's Shed. He says that other than his wife Leanne, he doesn’t have any passions, believing they can blinker you to possibilities. Besides the men’s shed, he’s involved with the Australian electoral commission, is a casual proctor at a Uni, enjoys lawn bowls and travel, and..… helps a local theatre group with props and scenery. Who said retirement was boring? DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

In this podcast episode, Ros and Cate talk with Stacey McCray, who shares her personal story of starting over in her early 50s. After leaving her successful career, her long-term marriage ended unexpectedly, and she vacated the home she lived in for 22 years, which took a toll on her mental health. Stacey's journey relates to the transitional turning points that occur in life and reminds us that how we respond to them can impact our well-being. Today, Stacey is passionate about using her newly acquired skills to help others through trauma, mental health issues, and loneliness. Stacey discusses her process of choosing joy and stepping into becoming a more authentic version of herself. She talks about how she coped with post-divorce stress, including fear of moving into change specifically because she was an older woman. She also discusses how these changes impacted her sense of identity and how she balanced building a business and dealing with the stress of a protracted divorce. Stacey's journey is characterized by self-care, including meditation, holistic health and nutrition courses, energetic healing, and aromatherapy. She discusses healthy habits she incorporated into her daily routine and how they impact her energy, decision-making, and motivation. She also talks about decluttering and creating new spaces as a form of self-care, and how she furnished her apartment to reflect her new chapter in life. Stacey became a soul coach, a concept she first came across when she began to take care of her soul and identify areas for growth. She is now passionate about building community, finding purpose, and combating loneliness, which she does by getting involved in community projects and initiating groups that bring people together. Stacey also talks about dating, body image, and aging, and provides advice to those struggling with these issues. S1. Ep6. Peter Wertheim - 94 years young - and his partner Janine Quine. Personal Story Shared. Their 30yr age gap proves that age is but a state of mind. Wisdom abounds Born in Melbourne in 1928, 94-year-old philosopher Peter Wertheim has spent his life critically analyzing and challenging the cultural, political, and historical issues that exist in Australia – that is in the nature of a philosopher. That ageism exists is not surprising to him, yet he will not be defined by the stereotypes that abound around being old. Conformity has never been part of Peter's life, as anyone who knows him will tell you. At 94, he continues to challenge our long-held beliefs, both unconscious and conscious despite the body feeling the ravages of age. As he often cites, Old age is not for the faint-hearted. Also joining Peter today is Janine Quine, his 62yr old partner, and companion of 20 years. Among her varied positions at the Australian Catholic University, Janine’s been involved in Aboriginal literacy research, and managing Brisbane's Clemente program, which seeks to help people of disadvantage access university education. Both Janine and Peter enjoy working together on projects that involve building community and changing perspectives. They founded the Year for Peace organization which explored the historical, political, spiritual, and cultural factors that contribute to a lack of peace and harmony in our individual and collective lives. Kasia shares with us the concept of the 7 windows of opportunity in our lives, and how we can use this knowledge to make positive changes as we age. She explains that by age 50, we are almost at the accountability window, which can show up as an inner pressure or drive to finally start living. At age 52, we are fully in the accountability window, which often results in long-term relationships breaking down and career changes. Kasia emphasizes that true change requires integration of the work with our whole self: body, mind, emotions, and soul connections. She also discusses the Stress Indicator Point System and its use in identifying and managing stress, particularly in older individuals. Kasia's Alchemy of Numbers involves understanding our Soul Agreement information, which can guide us in making important life decisions. Kasia's credentials include a Master's Degree in Transpersonal Psychology, a Bachelor of Business Administration and Communications, and certification in various modalities such as Neuro-Linguistic Programming and Hypnosis. 25 Sep 2023 | S1. Ep31. SAVI: A Model for Emotional Well-Being in Adulthood" Susan Turk Charles, Professor of Psychological Science (Strength and Vulnerability Integration Model) | 00:39:19
S1. Ep31. SAVI: A Model for Emotional Well-Being in Adulthood" Today, with the help of or guest Susan Turk Charles, we’ll be discussing a fascinating model for understanding emotional well-being in older adults. It’s called the Strength and Vulnerability Integration model (conveniently shortened to SAVI). Susan, a Professor of Psychological Science, and her team developed the SAVI model as an intervention to improve the mental and physical health of older adults. It’s based on the idea that strengths and vulnerabilities are not opposing forces, but rather complementary ones that work together to create emotional resilience. Strengths include factors like social support, self-esteem, and a sense of control over one's life, while vulnerabilities include things like stress, negative life events, and health problems. The SAVI model also suggests that in order to achieve optimal emotional well-being, a balance of strengths and vulnerabilities is necessary. So what does that all mean for you, our listeners, who are moving through the second stage of life? Susan TurkCharles is a Professor of Psychological Science, and Nursing Science, at the University of California-Irvine. She’s also a fellow of the Gerontological Society of America and the Association for Psychological Science. Susan has always been interested in how affective experience varies across the lifespan, and how socio-emotional experiences are related to differences in cognitive and health-related processes. Also in this episode, we’ll be looking at the recent covid pandemic in relation to SAVI. Because while advanced age is generally associated with improved emotional well-being, the coronavirus 2019 pandemic unleashed a global stressor that gravely threatened the physical well-being and challenged the emotional well-being of us all, however, it affected older adults disproportionately.
