In 1996, 17-year-old Aaron Stark of Denver, CO had made up his mind. He was going to become a school shooter. Before the days of Columbine, there weren’t metal detectors at every entrance or armed community services officers standing guard in American schools. On the afternoon of October 24th, 2015, 32-year-old Nick Clavier was driving down Hull Road in Chesterfield, Virginia with his four children. They had planned to go fishing at a nearby pond, before returning home for a family movie night while his wife Melody was out of town. But on the drive, something happened leading Nick’s vehicle to go over an embankment where it eventually crashed into a tree. Though the children were not harmed in the accident, Nick suffered a considerable amount of head trauma. When police arrived on scene, they located a firearm on the driver’s side floorboard, leading law enforcement to question if Nick had potentially shot himself. We’re faced with choices every day. Most are trivial and underwhelming to the point we don’t realize they’re even choices at all. Getting gas, whether or not to order take out, or the ever infamous quandary: “should I go to the gym?” There does, however, come those times when we’re forced to make more profound decisions…the type that could very well alter the trajectory of our future. This user also shared several photographs depicting the horrific taunting and physical abuse of several medically compromised and vulnerable children in a contemporary U.S. hospital setting. The original content was so disturbing - that users quickly dubbed the original poster as Dr. Gloves - a reflection of his unusual choice of attire. Liberty University lacrosse player Chad Gurney seemingly had it all: good looks, popularity, and an active love life. But a freak auto accident in 2005 left him with permanent physical and psychological impairments. On Wednesday, April 20th, 2022, 67-year-old Stephen Reid was supposed to play in his weekly tennis match in Concord, New Hampshire but never showed up. 2020 was shaping up to be a promising year for 25-year-old Jonathan Amerault of Keene, New Hampshire. He was working his way up the ranks in a career he loved, as a Biomedical Engineer. He had just purchased his first home and was in the process of remodeling it himself. The only thing missing from John’s life was a partner to share it with. Eventually, he did find a potential partner. A woman he saw a potential future with. On October 25th, 2018, staff at the California Men’s Colony Prison in San Luis Obispo noticed their beloved co-worker 64-year-old Athena Valentiny had not arrived at work. This absence prompted a wellness check, as was their standard procedure. But it was when two security guards tasked with checking up on Athena noticed her car was still parked in front of her home that they began to worry. To make matters worse, they noticed what appeared to be blood on her window shades. With Athena’s well being put into question, Grover Beach Police were dispatched and, to their horror, they found Athena viciously stabbed to death in her bedroom. As for who was responsible, there was a laundry list of potential suspects. But after some digging, investigators narrowed it down to one person, and with this discovery was a story, and a road trip, almost too far-fetched to be real.    Written by Trevor Pason , Executive Produced by Michael Ojibway. Fairfield, Iowa is home to just over 9,000 residents. It’s a place that feels more like a small town than a city. There’s a sense of community here, which was a main draw for Nohema Graber and her husband Paul when they decided to move to the Midwest and start a family. During the early morning hours of October 18th, 2015, in Palm Beach Gardens, FL, Corey Jones’ SUV broke down, so he pulled over on an offramp. In 2011 the Capital Gazette daily newspaper out of Annapolis, Maryland published a revealing exposé on the dangers of social media entitled, “Jarrod Wants to Be Your Friend.” The piece recounted one man’s relentless cyber harassment of a former high school acquaintance through Facebook. Though the article was originally intended to warn readers of the false sense of intimacy social media provides people we may not actually know - it quickly snowballed into something much worse. During the early morning hours on March 29th, 2019, 21-year-old Samantha Josephson, a student at the University of South Carolina, was out with friends in the Five Points district of Columbia. Although her friends were looking to spend a night out on the town, Samantha wanted to call it a night early and ordered an Uber home shortly after 2 a.m. When the car arrived, she notified her boyfriend Greg that she was heading home. She then got into a black Chevy Impala and departed from Five Points district. But Greg, who was able to track Samantha’s phone, noticed that she was heading in the opposite direction of her apartment - and shortly thereafter, was disconnected altogether from the app and unable to see her location. We rarely see the critical warning signs of someone suffering from a debilitating mental illness until the symptoms have entirely consumed the individual to the point of noticeable change or decline. 26 year-old Buckey Wolfe of Seattle, WA was one of these people. Most of us are at least peripherally familiar with the story of John Meehan, a.k.a the infamous “Dirty John,”  the con-artist who terrorized women across the United States. But when the news broke of what happened to John during his final moments, the infamy surrounding his abusive escapades strangely led to several international TV deals, docuseries, and was even the basis for some of the most successful investigative true-crime podcasts ever created. Fortunes were made as a result of his long history of domestic violence and abuse, but the victims of the traumatic events were of the few who never saw a substantial pay day. On the afternoon of March 19th, 2018, residents in Lake Wales, Florida were going about their usual day-to-day business. Adults were just getting off work, kids were returning home from school, and others were finishing up their errands. But, around 3 PM, that all changed when waves of police and paramedics made their way to a neighborhood on the south side of town, surrounding a small field near Caloosa Blvd and Lake Blvd. As public interest grew and residents watched on, they learned that just beyond that field, in a small but dense area of trees, lay the dead body of 15-year-old Giovanni Diaz. As for the suspect, 16-year-old Dillen Murray, he was already in custody, claiming that he had beaten the boy to death in self-defense. It just so happened that the community themselves had far more information than investigators initially realized, helping to piece together the puzzle of how a hang out between friends turned deadly. ***We originally covered this case in an abbreviated “Felony Friday” mini-episode back in 2020. On October 23rd, 2022, 21-year-old Jared Dicus and 21-year-old Anggy Diaz posted a photo on Facebook that surprised their friends and family alike. In 2016, police in Columbus, Ohio, were dispatched to a homeless encampment known as a "tent city" near the Scioto River. Most of us trust that our legal system will deliver the right judgments and hold those who commit heinous crimes accountable. That trust extends to the support we expect to follow — the assumption that resources will be available after an unexpected tragedy. But the unfortunate truth is that not everyone is afforded these privileges, making the path to recovery and closure all the more complicated for survivors of violent crime who are left to pick up the pieces on their own. Shortly after 5 a.m. on Sept. 10, 2012, three masked men wielding guns broke into a suburban home in Ocoee, Florida. The intruders dragged roommates Alex Zaldivar, 19, Brienna Campos, 20, and her brother Remington Campos, 23, from their beds and lay them face down on the living room floor. Minutes later, bullets were fired into each of the heads. The men fled. When the ringing in their ears subsided, Remington and Brienna Campos realized they had miraculously survived, but their friend did not. Alex Zaldivar lay motionless in a widening pool of his own blood. Who were these men and why were they trying to kill everyone inside? It would later be revealed one of the intruders had been in this house, uninvited, once before. In August of 2015, 40-year-old Vermont mother Jody Herring lost custody of her three children after a tumultuous battle with substance abuse. Born into a horrific family history of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, Herring’s mental health began to show clear signs of deterioration as she promised that an “Armageddon” was nearing. On August 8, 2007, EMS arrived at a residential property in Esto, FL to render life saving aid to an unresponsive 7-year-old girl who had been found floating face down in a backyard pool. Wayne Williams was convicted of the murders of two young adults in 1982, supposedly bringing an end to the reign of terror of the “Atlanta Monster.” But the cases of at least 27 other missing or murdered African American children were abruptly closed in the aftermath of his conviction, leaving the surviving families with little peace, and no semblance of closure.
