Ladybirds are up there with the bumblebee as one of the most loved & celebrated insects. From lovable characters in kids films to being used as designs on kids clothing, you'd be hard to come by someone who doesn't know what one is. Joining me this week to shine some light on these fascinating beetles is president of the Royal Entomology Society, entomologist & ecologist, Prof. Helen Roy.

Helen tells all on how ladybirds captured her heart & where her love for them has taken her. She also gives us the juicy gossip of the hidden world of several different species.

21 Feb 2022Killing The Shepherd with Tom Opre01:07:24

It's not the first time that Into The Wild has discussed hunting. We've certainly not shied away from the topic because let's face it, whether we like it or not, legal hunting exists & whilst I'd never hunt, nor do I even eat meat & I think hunting as an activity is a bit "mate really?", it's still something I like to talk about as it affects, in numerous ways, wildlife.

On this episode, I talk with filmmaker & founder of Shepherds of Wildlife Society Tom Opre about his new film, Killing The Shepherd. This film looks at a community in deep poverty & lack of opportunity in Tanzania that calls out for help to a hunting safari operator, asking if they can bring work & income to the people. Killing The Shepherd was a great watch & it has a incredibly gripping story. To get the chance to have Tom, the creator, talk to me about the film was a great privilege.

21 Aug 2022A Look at the RSPB with CEo Beccy Speight (Recorded Live At Global Birdfair 2022)00:33:52

I've always got plenty of questions to ask about everything, it's literally my favourite thing to do (annoying child), so imagine how excited I was when I got the chance to sit down with the once person who could really give me an insight to one of the largest conservation organisations out there, Beccy Speight, the CEO of the RSPB.

I didn't have long with Beccy with her busy schedule at Global Birdfair, so I got straight to the big questions covering things like, should England call itself world leading in conservation? Dealing with divserity in such a big organisation & should we still be feeding wild birds so much?

03 Oct 2021Finding Your Ikigai with Tania Esteban00:58:44

I love chatting with wildlife filmmakers. It's never the same & always reveals new discoveries.

This episode feels like it's been in the planning ever since Into The Wild began back in March 2020 because that's almost when I contacted this week's guest to ask her to be on the show. We both finally were able to pin a date in & I got the absolute pleasure to talk with assistant producer for Silverback Films, Tania Esteban.

Diving in to the style of Tania's filmmaking & what she loves most about making & watching documentaries to focusing on a short film Tania made & released during August & the Tokyo Olympics, The Guardians of Ikigai. This film is a beautiful mix of wildlife, culture & a sense of Japanese philosophy, which Tania dives beautifully into during this chat.

15 Nov 2021How We Feel About COP26 with Indy Green & Lauren Cook00:25:42

Good lord the last 2 weeks have been eco & planet intense eh? We've had to sit back & watch/listen as world leaders have made pledges & finalised plans to help the planet reach 1.5C & get rid of fossil fuels. It's not been easy & to be honest a lot of us are unsure how we feel about the outcomes.

On Saturday 6th November, it was the Global Day of Action & thousands of people around the world marched to show support for climate & human justice. Along with those people were myself, naturalist Indy Green & PhD student Lauren Cook. After our march in London, we grabbed 20 minutes to sit down at London's Natural History Museum to chat about how we feel about the future of the planet.

If you say the word "wasp" you're rarely met with a response like "gah I just love them" however, it only takes a little peek into the world of wasps for someone to learn that there is MUCH more than meets the social opinion of them.

08 Nov 2021Working in the Polar Regions & COP26 with Ella Potts00:55:13

For years we have been shown documentaries of life in the polar regions whilst likely forgetting, that someone has had to wrap up, prep a warm drink & head out to those freezing temperatures & show us the wildlife in the cold. This week I chat with marine biologist & researcher, Ella Potts.

From Ella's top tips of dealing with the cold to why she chose to work in such inhospitable environments, Ella tells us all about life of working in the polar regions. 24 Jul 2022The First 1000 Acres by Real Wild Estates with Benedict MacDonald (Recorded Live at Global Birdfair)00:30:19

This is the first episode recorded LIVE at Global Birdfair 2022!

There has been A LOT of talk & action for rewilding (or wilding, whichever you prefer) over the last few years with many different models, but one thing we haven't spoken much about on Into The Wild yet is how to do this......as a business model.

Someone who has done this though is conservationist, author & head of nature restoration at Real Wild Estates, Benedict MacDonald. Benedict dives in to tell us about how Real Wild Estates works & what the focuses are for landowners they work with & the local surrounding community.

22 Aug 2021Sloths with Lucy Houliston00:53:58

I've genuinely never heard someone say "Sloths? Me? Nah, not a fan." Because how could anyone not love them. So when I was sat wondering what animal to talk about next, it hit me......slowly (because it was a Sloth).

Joining me on this week's episode is NatGeo Young Explorer, Zoologist & Sloth advocate, Lucy Houliston. From where we can find them, to how many species & more importantly, what they sound like & how they.......you know....poop. Lucy dives into the detail. We also touch on the conservation of Sloths & not only why these animals are at risk but also why they are such an important ambassador species for their habitat.

After our chat we also spoke about another passion of Lucy's & that's "weird wildlife". Lucy has always favoured the 'not so loved' & is taking part in something called Change for Strange which she told me on about.

This week is our penultimate Global Birdfair episode & our guest is someone that I can't believe has taken me so long to get on the show, David Lindo, aka The Urban Birder.

David has had a fascinating career in wildlife & nature presenting. From in front of the screens to pen on paper, David's love & fascination with the natural world, & of course, birds, has brought him to incredible opportunities. We briefly talk about David's time in London & how The Urban Birder was born to how he became an advocate for discovering & appreciating nature on your doorstep.

14 Feb 2022People Power with Francisca Rockey00:48:38

I may have said this before, but in recent years, I have learnt more about how people are a great part of nature & without the knowledge that some people have about the environments, sustainable use of natural resources & overall connection to the natural world, we really wouldn't stand a chance of saving this planet.

On today's show I am joined by campaigner & geographer, Francisca Rockey to discuss the power of putting indigenous people at the heart of wildlife conservation. We discuss not only what the benefits are but what the impacts can be if this is not done. We also touch on what it takes getting city folk into nature & about #BlackGeographers, an organsiation that Francisca was part of setting up.

It's not secret that the biodiversity of the UK (and the rest of the planet) is in deep deep trouble, but how often do we consider the plants in this? What kind of plants are rare in England, Scotland & Wales? What plants have we lost? And quite simply, why?

On this episode I (because Jan is not well at the moment GET WELL JAN) talk with ecologist in the highlands of Scotland, Gus Routledge.

Not only do we discuss rare plants, we also talk about why certain habitats are in trouble, what habitats we have lost & is it possible to bring these back.

24 Oct 2021Controlling Plant Disease in the UK with Nicola Spence00:48:53

In the last 20 months, controlling diseases or viruses has been dominating the news, but what if we told you, there's a whole other side to disease or pest control that we rarely hear about, & that's plant disease.

This week on Into The Foliage, Jan & I are super lucky to have a chat with the UK Chief Plant Health Advisor for the UK, Nicola Spence. 24 Jan 2022Our Planet in Space & Pride in STEM00:58:13

I KNOW it sounds odd that a wildlife, nature & conservation podcast to talk about.....space but on this episode I chat with astrophysicist & chair of Pride in STEM Dr Alfredo Carpineti about the wonders of our galaxy & how understanding life on THIS planet, can tell us about how things work....you know....way up there.

This chat was absolutely mind blowing & I loved getting a chance to ask Alfredo some questions about space that, to be honest, I've been dying to ask someone.

We also touched on the great organisation of Pride in STEM which Alfredo is chair of. This great network that supports & elevates the voices & work of LGBTQ+ people in the world of science, technology, mathematics & science.

For months, everyone was told to stay indoors or told to limit their time outside to only 1 hour meaning people around the world suddenly started to look more & appreciate local wildlife & greenspaces on their doorsteps. Lizzie tells us all about what her absolute favourite animals to see on her doorstep & what appreciating local wildlife can do for not just you, but for a local community. Lizzie also tells us about her best nature spots to go to in the UK & what her most memorable animal moment has been in the UK. 31 Jul 2022A Chat with Indy Greene & George Hassall (Recorded Live at Global Birdfair 2022)00:37:35

I won't lie, this was like having Ant & Dec on the show BUT whilst at Global Birdfair it was great to sit down & talk with 2 people that have featured on the show before & to simply have a good chin wag about nature.

Whilst having 2 people on that are under the category of "THE YOUTH", I wanted to grab the chance to ask Indy & George what it feels like to deal with the climate crisis at an age where they may well directly be impacted by it.

18 Jul 2022Wild City with Florence Wilkinson00:46:28

It's no secret that I love talking about urban & city wildlife. Living in London, I like to shout about the nature that I get to see daily that others, in more rural areas, may not often see. So this week I was super excited to chat to author of Wild City & nature enthusiast Florence Wilkinson.

Florence shared the reason why she wanted to create a book not only about wildlife in Urban areas, but about bizarre populations of certain species that seemed to thave thrived in city spaces in unusual ways.

26 Mar 2023S1E1: Rethinking Conservation: Breaking Down the Fortress01:05:47

Nerds! Into The Wild is back. It's revamped. It's reshaped. It's got a new co-host & we are ready to continue bringing you nature & conservation content each month.

For the first episode in this new monthly series, we are focusing on the big C word......no, stop it, we mean CONSERVATION. Starting in the UK, we explore what models are used & how we have ended up in the situation were are in, too many rules & not enough guardians maybe? Then we take a quick virtual trip to two different countries to see how conservation works there, what it means to the people within it & see how that has evolved since their colonial past.

Guest appearances from Nick Gates, Paul Powlesland, Mathen 'Rajeev' Mathew & Bupe Ritah Banda

18 Oct 2021Curlews & Corncrakes with Nick Acheson00:52:36

Now hear me out. I KNOW I've said in the past that birds are not my thing & I don't find them that interesting.....& they're not & I don't, I stand by that, but I will never underestimate their importance.

This week I welcome a guest that focuses specifically on 2 UK species to discuss what's happened to them, what's being done for them & why these birds are so important for the UK & it's biodiversity. Birder & naturalist Nick Acheson has a wealth of experience working around the world working to bring people closer to it's wildlife & now, since committing to not flying, he finds himself in Norfolk working to save the Curlew & Corncrake.

27 Jun 2021Into The Foliage: Garden Appreciation with George Hassall (aka Green Fingered George)00:55:49

Quick Note: I can't believe I'm about to say this but.....I'M TAKING A MONTH OFF! This is a big deal for Ryan Dalton, as I never do this. This episode is our last episode until August 2021. Then we will be back with much more nature chat for you all!

Gardens! Some of us have them, some of us long for them, others hate & refuse to do anything to them. Whatever we think of them, we can't ignore that they are a privilege to have & when used well, can be a corridor for native wildlife in this country. So when it comes to appreciating a garden, there's only one person Jan & I could talk to & that was RHS ambassador, George Hassall.

George's attitude to a garden is infectious. Use what you have to benefit you & nature. From what are the do's & what are the don'ts, George tells us about what gardens mean to him & why we should all be appreciating any green or outdoors space we have.

09 Jan 2023Moths with James Lowen00:48:37

Welcome back nerds & happy new year to you all!

Butterflies & moths are the same. Just like a pigeon & a parrot are both birds, butterflies & moths are both Lepidoptera, so why is there so much hate on moths & so much love for butterflies? Well maybe the name doesn't help BUT to help me talk about this & about moths of the UK is naturalist & author of Much Ado About Mothing, James Lowen.

From how many species, James's favourite & how moths have & continue to benefit our lives even away from the natural world!

05 Dec 2022Conservation & The Climate Crisis with Dr Charlie Gardner01:00:21

Okay, brace yourself, we are talking about the climate crisis.

Discussing this topic is never easy & it's common to talk about the systematic issues that have & continue to cause it BUT an area that is rarely discussed is how wildlife conservation should take on board the climate crisis & it's impacts to help have more practical success. To explain in much better way, this week I am joined by conservation scientist & climate change activist, Dr Charlie Gardner.

13 Mar 2022Bringing Nature Back to the Lake District with Lee Scholefield00:47:55

Land is the UK has changed massively over the years & a classic example of how drastic this change can be, is the hills, meadows & forests of the Lake District.

On this week's show I talk with RSPB Haweswater site manager & author of Wild Fell, Lee Scholefield. Lee shares his insights into what it has been like taking over 2 farms on behalf of the RSPB & facing conflict with neighbouring farmers. He also tells us the history of land usage in the UK & why some areas, like the Lake District, have lost so much of their native fauna & flora.

The best thing about hosting Into The Wild is that I get to talk to people that adore the natural world & the conversations always fill me with glee & this week's guest did more than that.

Joining me on today's show is wildlife presenter, author & ranger, Ajay Tegala. Ajay & I decided to talk about 2 things, the first being his enthusiasm for bats & the second was his job as a ranger. If you're here to listen to someone be x100 passionate & positive, this episode is for you.

05 Sep 2021Basking Sharks & Conservation Conflicts with Isla Hodgson01:08:10

If you're a fan of nature (of course you are) & you're on social media (very likely too) then you will know that within the conservation industry there often debates or dare I say battles between people or organisations with opposing views. For example the shooting industry & the RSPB. This got me thinking, how does this affect the progress & overall end result of projects or debates. To help teach me more about this I spoke with conservation scientist & ambassador for Save Our Seas Foundation, Isla Hodgson.

Before we spoke about conservation conflicts I HAD to talk to Isla about another passion in her life, Basking Sharks. Isla has spent many hours in the presence of these wonderful animals & her love for them came across perfectly. We then swiftly moved on to discuss the human behaviour side of conservation conflicts & what impact this can have on the success for the protection of the planet.

19 Dec 2022Last Episode of 2022 (A Chat with Ryan) - Hosted by Chantelle Lindsay & Lucy Hodson00:44:27

As much as I cringe at the very thought of uploading this episode & my inner voice screaming "THIS IS SO EGOTISTICAL!!" I still much hit the 'publish' on Podbean for the last time of 2022 & share with you an episode where I, Ryan, am the guest.

The reason this is happening is because over the last year, whenever I have asked on Twitter or Instagram for suggestions of topics, guests or organisations to talk to, I often have replies or DMs asking me to do an episode where I am being interviewed, so Oscar finally twisted my arm & convinced me to do this for the last show of the year.

In this episode, previous guests & HUGE pals of mine Chantelle Lindsay & Lucy Hodson (Lappers) quiz me about favourite episodes, how my mindset has changed over the years & tackling difficult topics.

02 May 2022The State of Nature with Dr George McGavin00:51:53

I often think to myself, "nature was in such a better way when I was a kid", which is likely not untrue however, was it great? Was it healthy? Was it rich? Or was it just better than it is now? All these questions fill my head so on today's episode, I decided to talk about just that with my guest, entomologist, zoologist & presenter, Dr George McGavin.

George has a wealth of knowledge & experience in natural science & is also a man that could answer the very questions I have been pondering over about the state of nature in the UK for a while. Moments of heavy in this episode but we get down to where we think we have gone wrong & gone right for restoring nature & protecting this wonderful planet for future generations.

A garden, the thing many of us hope to have & I'm sure many of you fellow nerds join us in hoping to one day turn it into a beautiful space for local wildlife BUT how have gardens in the UK changed over the years? What value can they hold for nature but also for people & their wellbeing & their outlook on the natural world? And so we've come to the last episode recorded at Global Birdfair 2022 & what better way to end other than with a chat with the founder of the event, Tim Appleton.

Before I went to GBF I had heard all kinds of things about the event regarding issues with diversity, not enough talk of the climate crisis & the fact that it doesn't seem to tackle the right issues in nature, so I wanted to talk to Tim about how & why this event was set up & what he sees changing, if anything, in the future.

28 Feb 2022Into The Foliage: No Dig with Charles Dowding00:51:07

When gardening, we are always looking for plant friendly ways to grow our plants. Whether that be how we manage them, what we put on them or even......how we work with the soil. On this month's episode of Into The Foliage, Jan & I were super honored to have guru of organic gardening & the man who got No Dig into the mainstream world, Charles Dowding.

Charles tells us both why he loves the no dig method for gardening & how it can help the planet. He also gives us his top tips for growing your own food, & since the man has 35 years of experience, this is very insightful.

31 Oct 2021Nuance in Nature with Alex Lees01:01:54

It's no secret that on Into The Wild, topics that have nuance are some of my favourites. The reason being is that I like to challenge my brain & hear other view points or information that I didn't previously know. Running & hosting this show, that has certainly happened & my stance on some topics have changed.

This week I wanted to dive a bit deeper into why nuance is so important when discussing topics in wildlife conservation & why sometimes media or ARA organisations, may miss the nuance. To help answer some of my questions, I was joined my senior lecturer in biodiversity at Manchester Met Uni, Alex Lees.

We cover a lot in this episode & I also get the chance to discuss 2 recent Twitter threads from Alex that cover some very interesting research papers he was involved in.

30 Jan 2023Treated Like Animals with Alick Simmons00:58:25

Around the world, on a daily basis (& sometimes to the greatest of extremes) animals, both domestic & wild, are used for human's benefit, but, do we ever stop & think about how we use the, why we use them, should we use them or are we doing it in the right way? 10 Jan 2022Sea Birds with Ben Porter00:58:00

Happy New Year Nature Nerds!

After a festive break where I stuffed my face with food on the hour, every hour & drank a rather adequate amount, Into The Wild is back!

They come in a variety of shapes, sizes & colours. They spend the majourity of their time out over the waves & come together in the masses when it's time to get busy! Our first episode of 2022 is of course about, sea birds.

Joining me to dive into their world is naturalist & wildlife photographer Ben Porter. Ben shines some light of how these incredible animals have evolved to live out at such a challenging environment & how the populations of different species are doing. I also had to chat to Ben about the campaign he started along with Lucy Lapwing & Nina Constable called the Plant Pot Parabolic.

28 Apr 2024S2E3: Killing for Conservation: How Do We Feel?01:33:33

Throughout history, humans, especially those of the western world, have intentionally & unintentionally introduced species around the world where they may have never reached before & as a result, negative consequences have occurred. BUT, the big questions that we often avoid is, should we actually now be intervening again to try to remove the issues that have been created. Is lethal control of mammals, fish, reptiles, insects, birds & plants really the only option? And how do we feel about this?

On this episode we explore this very topic & aim to have an honest discussion about how we feel about killing for conservation, whether or not the science tells us one way or another.

20 Dec 2021Community Conservation with Madison Bowden Parry00:37:15

Well, we made it. The last episode of Into The Wild for 2021. 12 months, 50 episodes & almost 30,000 downloads. A massive thank you to everyone who listens, shares & sends love.

It's always tough to decide what to talk about for the last episode of the year, but after a quick think of what some of the main nature topics have been this year, I suddenly thought, community based conservation. It's something that has, rightfully, been pushed forward as a priority & spoken about a lot when working with nature so why not end the year of that.

For this I asked wildlife presenter & marine photographer Madison Bowden Parry (aka Madison Wildlife) to join me for a chat. Starting with her love of photographing the marine world we then lead on to chatting about why involving a community can help strengthen the success of a wildlife conservation project.

08 May 2022Sky Dancer Day & Writing for the Youth with Gill Lewis00:40:40

One thing it's easy to forget to do is actually stop & celebrate wildlife. Learn about it & go find it sure, but simply celebrate it or a majestic moment is easy to forget. On this week's episode we are making sure we absolutely do not forget to do that as we sit back & talk with vet, author & fan of the wildlife world, Gill Lewis about the upcoming Sky Dancer Day.

Gill shares all about what this celebration is all about & what can be expected from this years event & also a bit more about another day later in the year, Hen Harrier Day.

We also get a chance to discuss Gill's books & how writing for the youth & encouraging them to be creative too, can help them engage more with the natural world.

07 Mar 2022A Chat with City Girl in Nature (Kwesia)00:41:08

We all have our own ways of connecting with nature. Whether we simply like to go for a walk or enjoy foraging for wild food or evening immersing physically like cold water swimming (yuck). One person that has been exploring how people engage with nature in their lives is Kwesia aka City Girl in Nature. Kwesia has been making a fabulous online series that focuses on inner city people & their relationship to nature.

In this chat, Kwesia & I share our love for London's green spaces & discuss her own connection to the natural world & what it means to her.

10 Oct 2021Badgers & Bovine TB with Alick Simmons00:50:25

Every year in England, the topic of Bovine TB & Badgers hits the media, & rightly so. Our governments solution to try to eradicate this disease or control the problem is to shoot A LOT of badgers. Has it worked? What else could be done? Why lethal control? Is this affecting badgers? Could we not try something less....aggressive?

These are all questions I wanted answers to & I was lucky enough to get the chance to talk with veterinarian & naturalist Alick Simmons about this very topic. Alick has had a extensive career working in public health, animal welfare & epidemic disease control & I was keen to get the run down on what the heck has been going on with B-TB for the last several years.

Six months ago Into The Wild attended the Whitley Fund for Nature's People for Planet Summit in London. An event where guest speakers around the world met to discuss big topics in community based wildlife conservation. At this event we were lucky enough to meet & speak with 2015 Whitley Fund for Nature Award Winner, Jean Wiener from Haiti.

This bonus episode is that very chat where Jean shares his experience of working with people & wildlife in a country like Haiti & what he feels is the best way forward to restore the natural resources for the planet, country & it's communities.

16 Jan 2023The Deadly Balance with Prof Adam Hart01:05:08

It's one thing to want wildlife, especially the big mega fauna like lions, tigers & leopards, to thrive & do well in the wild, but it's another to stop & consider what will happen if their populations grow alongside human populations. Indigenous communities have lived alongside wildlife & with nature since forever but as pressures from the western world (both past & presence) mean predators are forced to live closer & closer, the consequences grow more severe.

Prof Adam Hart, someone who has been on the show a few times before, has focused on human / wildlife conflicts a lot in his career & his new book, The Deadly Balance, looks at how different species bring their different challenges.

12 Sep 2021Crocodilians with Laura Kojima01:01:25

FINALLY, after 72 episodes we are talking about my favourite group of animals, crocodilians!

A few months ago I stumbled across someone on Twitter who was sharing the most adorable baby Alligator content. So it's no surprise that this person joins me today on the show to discuss the wonderful world of crocodilians. Herpetologist & MS student at Georgia University, Laura Kojima, splashes into the world of these prehistoric reptiles from how many species there are, to where we can find them & most importantly, a baby crocodilian impression competition with myself!

27 Mar 2022Into The Foliage: Hedgerows with Megan Gimber00:46:50

Wildlife evolves to adapt & survive in order to keep going & sometimes thos adaptations can be ending up relying on something we (humans) have created....rarely but sometimes the case. A perfect example of this in the UK is hedgerows.

Joining Into The Foliage this month is Key Habitats Officer for People's Trust for Endangered Species, Megan Gimber. Megan shares her wealth of knowledge about hedgerows from why they exist in the first place to how important they are for wildlife.

12 Dec 2022London in the Wild with The London Wildlife Trust01:00:04

Throughout our almost 3 years of Into The Wild, I have mentioned countless times about the diversity & power of community of the city I live in, London. Despite me knowing the amount of wildlife this place holds, I still get a bit frustrated when I hear people say otherwise. That's why I was pumped to see The London Wild Trust release a new book called London in the Wild, a book platforming great minds & sharing wonderful detail of the green & blue spaces & all it's inhabitants of the big smoke......London.

In this episode I speak with 3 of the 10 contributors, Mathew Frith, Daniel Greenwood & Amy Pryor about their section of the book & how they found the process of sharing their wealth of experience.

Connecting people with nature & wilding the UK are two topics that have dominated the wildlife news for years & one way we can talk about both those things, is by having a chat about white storks coming back to England after years of absence.

Joining me to chat all about these impressive & much loved birds, is the project officer at The White Stork Project, Lucy Groves. Lucy explains to me the power these animals have as not only part of a wider ecosystem, but a way to draw people in to caring & wanting to protect the UK's biodiversity. 27 Aug 2024S2E7: Wildlife Tourism: Exploration or Exploitation?01:18:06

For many of us, there's a deep rooted feeling within us that gives us an urge to explore & travel the world & a part of that is built on wanting to see wildlife. Whether it's elephants in southern Africa, whales around the coast of Iceland or the many species of birds in Brazil. There's a pull that encourages us to spend money, travel & enjoy seeing these countries & their wildlife........but

Is wildlife tourism actually helping biodiversity & the local communities? How can we trust where our money is going? And in the current events of the climate crisis, should we all be encouraged to fly around the world? There's a lot of questions here so join us as we dig into the topic of Wildlife Tourism.

20 Feb 2023Community Conservation in Zambia with Bupe Ritah Banda00:43:31

Regular listeners of Into The Wild will know that as part of our big project, Beyond The Trigger, we have explored community conservation in Namibia quite a bit & very recently I had the pleasure of being introduced to a wonderful person called Bupe who is studying here in England. Bupe was telling me all about the wonderful community work she is involved with her country of Zambia & very quickly I thought, I want more people to hear this.

As well as representing the Zambian youth for Zambia's CBNRM (Community Based Natural Resource Management), Bupe also is involved with the Community Leaders Network across southern Africa & briefly explains what this organisation is & what it stands for.

28 May 2023S1E3: Farming in the UK Part 100:53:31

*deep breath*

Okay, farming is a huge topic. It means very little to some people & absolutely everything to others. It's peoples culture, family, livelihood & their meaning. When we really get into the discussion, it's easy to see why. It's also easy to see that farming should matter more to the people who don't really give it much thought. In this first part, Nadia & Ryan discuss just how big farming is in the UK & why heart & soul in food really is important for us to get back to farming with nature.

Guest appearance from Sue Pritchard.

Emma Brisdion, who has featured on Into The Wild before, had her own podcast (For What It's Earth) & is a superb science communicator, invited me to her neck of the woods, Bath, to visit her allotment & talk about the importance of these kinds of spaces for people & their connection to food.

29 May 2022Regenesis with George Monbiot00:57:47

Before I sit & type the blurb to the show, I need to tell you that this episode is the last show until July. Ryan & Oscar are taking 4 weeks off to work on Into The Wild's big project, Beyond The Project.  Speak to you in a month!!

Farming. A global activity. For some people it is more than a job, it's a culture, a life, a family history but for the planet, could it be one of the most ecologically damaging? On our last episode before our mid year break, I speak with environmentalist & environmental journalist George Monbiot about his new book, Regenesis.

In this book, George is stunned by the life he starts seeing in the soil under his feet. This lead him on to wondering about the global farming systems & what it might be doing to life on this planet. I chat to George about what it took researching this book, what he learnt & how he feels about the potential backlash from farmers who dedicate their life, to producing food for people.

29 Nov 2021Into The Foliage: Home Grown Veg with Sam Corfield aka The Hairy Horticulturist00:51:42

"Oh these tomatoes we grew at home are way better than the supermarket ones!" A sentence we hear all too often & something we know is true. Home grown is way better than store bought, but, how easy is it to do? Where do you start? Why bother? What are the benefits? All these questions that Jan & I had & luckily, had the person to ask them too. Fruit & veg grower & horticulturist, Sam Corfield explains all in this episode of Into The Foliage.

From how Sam got into growing his own, to why he thinks its important for people to connect more with where their food comes from. Sam dives into why where our food comes from, is important for us & the planet.

I don't think I've ever met someone that saw a hedgehog & didn't shout "OMG THAT IS CUTE AF" but more importantly, this reaction is getting rarer & not because hedgehogs in the UK are getting less cute of course, but because sightings are becoming way less.

16 May 2022Right to Roam with Nadia Shaikh & Nick Hayes00:55:57

We bang on about connecting with nature & the importance to get outside & see. We CONSTANTLY say "people won't protect what they don't know about or love". So when you learn that in England, we (the public) only have access to 8% of the land......makes you a little bit concerned eh?

Two people that think this is bonkers & are doing something I love (actually doing something about it) are Right to Roam campaigners Nadia Shaikh & Nick Hayes. Nadia & Nick explain all from why this means so much to them & what the real situation is out there regarding access to this place we call England. However, it's not just as simple as access, Nadia also explains the barriers that exist for black, Asian & minority ethnic people who want to or worse, don't even consider, that areas of the countryside is for them.

03 Oct 2022Dogs & Wildlife with Zoe Macdonald & Sean McCormack01:14:58

I LOVE wildlife.......but I LOVE dogs. My two jobs, the podcast & running a professional dog walking company both (obviously) envolve, heavily, these two things, but do they, or can they, go together happily?

There's always a lot of chat about how much domestic dogs disturb wildlife or damage habitat & the answers always seem to be lost in amongst the arguments so I decided to mix the two sides together & have vet & conservationist Sean McCormack on to tell us about what the issues are & then to have professional dog walker, dog trainer & business owner Zoe Macdonald on to tell us dog owners, the best ways we can be walking our dogs without allowing them to disturb or damage wildlife.

15 Aug 2021Nature Room 101 with Lucy McRobert & Jack Perks00:57:18

Nature is wonderful. It's beautiful. It's interesting. It's cute. It's simply something that many of us adore & need within our lives........HOWEVER there are also parts of nature that we don't like. You simply can't like every part of it, it's impossible. So in order to embrace the dislike in the world of nature this special episode I am joined by wildlife photographer Jack Perks & author Lucy McRobert for Nature Room 101.

On this show we have 3 categories in nature including An Animal We Dislike, The Nature Industry & Weather. Each of us select our "thing" in that category that we would like to put in Room 101 FOREVER, then we vote. So sit back, go in with an open mind & remember it's all in the name of fun & enjoy our rants.

16 Oct 2022Living with Wolves with Hanna Petterson00:56:13

When we talk of a wolf, a number of things could come to mind. Maybe a folklore store? A character in a childhood film? An image of a woodland with a huge moon in the background? Or I'd imagine, for most of this audience, we think of an animal of great importance, both culturally & environmentally. A lost animal in the UK & throughout Europe, but one that is also coming back, to Europe that is.

Yet, do we consider how difficult or easy this can be? To bring back the wolf? What has to be done or considered & who has to be spoken to? Well one person that has spent a long time working that out is conservation social scientist Hanna Petterson & Hanna joins me on this show to have this very chat with me.

"You should be doing more!"

"It starts at home!"

So many times we are told we should be helping the planet in our lives & often that means it starts in the place we spend most of our time.....our house. On this week's episode I am joined by podcaster & environmental science communicator, Emma Brisdion.

Emma was the perfect person for this show having co hosted an environmental & sustainability podcast, For What It's Earth Pod

From what Emma has learned from running a podcast, to her top tips for making sure elements of our life are doing good things for the planet, there's lots to unpack in this episode for being eco.

01 Aug 2021Lions with Dr Amy Dickman00:50:56

INTO THE WILD IS BACK!

Nature nerds worry no more, I (Ryan) have enjoyed my month of & now we are back to bring you weekly episodes of chat all about wildlife, the planet & everything that lives on it.

Lions. Probably the most well known animal on the planet. Majestic, powerful, adorable & the symbol of a king. Quite frankly it's embarrassing it's taken me this long to chat about them BUT here we are & this week I joined by Lion expert, conservationist & founder of Ruaha Carnivore Project, Dr Amy Dickman.

Amy has dedicated her life work to protecting & conserving wildlife so I was super excited to grab some time to get to talk to her. Amy leaps into the world of Lions telling me all about how the live, what they eat & most importantly, why she loves them. Amy & I also discuss more complex topics, & two that Amy openly discusses a lot, which is human/wildlife conflict & the discussion around trophy hunting.

18 Apr 2022Exploring Rockpools with Ben & Christophe from The Rockpool Project01:03:37

Speaking personally, going exploring rockpools on the British coastline filled my childhood holidays & even now as a 32 year old man, I still get the same enjoyment out of lifting a rock to find a shore crab or admiring the many colours of anemones & seaweed.

This week's episode is all about rockpools & joining me to go exploring is Ben Holt & Christophe Patterson from The Rockpool Project in Falmouth, UK. Chris & Ben share their combined knowledge to tell us all about what a rockpool is, what life we can find there & how The Rock Pool Project is working to connect people closer to marine wildlife on their doorstep.

13 Feb 2023Photographing Bugs with Gail Ashton01:05:57

If you're into nature (& of course you are, that's why you're here right?) then photography, even just via your smart phone, is something you'll most likely try at some point, but how does that work when your subjects are......well, sometimes, tiny.

This week I'm joined by nature writer & photographer of the insects Gail Ashton who sheds some light of what it takes to get up close & personal on bugs via the lens. Gail & I also take a moment to discuss why most celebrated wildlife photographers are white men & why this can easily change.

06 Feb 2023Rivers & Right to Roam with Dr Amy Jane Beer00:53:00

Have you ever met someone, heard them speak about the natural world & just thought, "yes.....you are a fabulous person"? Because that's exactly what I thought when I met & spoke with this week's guest, naturalist, author, campaigner, Dr Amy Jane Beer.

Starting with rivers, a passion & important part of Amy's life, we dive into what they do, what they have, what they represent & what they can give. Amy shares how rivers ended up playing not only an important part in her life, but a deep emotional one too.

We also managed to grab time to talk about the Right to Roam campaign & the recent decision to stop wild camping on Dartmoor (the last place it was legal to do so).

19 Sep 2021The Use of Hunting for Conservation in the UK with Megan Rowland00:51:41

Listeners of Into The Wild will know that I am always keen to talk about topics that can often be divisive or that people will already have strong views on. This is mainly because these topics sometimes have biases from each side when being discussed in media or online. This week's episode is one of those topics. I am joined by deer stalker & land manager Megan Rowland to discuss how hunting is used for conservation purposes in the UK.

Along with talking about how this works, Megan also explains the evolution of hunting in the UK & why it seems to be built around class when this isn't the case in other countries.

If you follow us on social media, you'll know that I recently got back from a trip to Namibia to screen our first ever film, Beyond The Trigger. Now what kind of podcaster would I be if I didn't grab some insightful wildlife conservation chats with people on my travels.

With that in mind I am super excited to share with you the first part of this special episode, Into The Wild in Namibia. In this episode, actually recorded at the later part of my trip, I travelled along with CEO of NACSO (Namibian Association for Community Based Natural Resource Management Support Organisations), Maxi Louis to a conservancy called ≠Gaingu, where I got to chat with the newly appointed conservancy manager Neville Hendricks about life as a farmer & how valuing wildlife has helped the community & the surrounding biodiversity.

26 Feb 2024S2E1: Rivers in the UK: Let's Get Wet!00:56:02

One of, if not the most, tranquil places many of us can imagine being is on the bank of a river. The sound of the water moving & the visual of the ripples or crashing of water speeding past. They ground us & are essential to life so we must be looking after them in the UK right?.......RIGHT?

For episode 1 of season 2 we are looking at the state of rivers in the UK. From how insects can be important indicators for determining river health, to the hard hitting truth about what we are dumping in these magnificent habitats.

One place in the UK that has really shown the way & challenged the status quo in food production & land management is Knepp Estate. From an old farm to now a place that has restored nature & reintroduced a huge list of species, Knepp is now a semi wild environment that is seeing seasonal visitors (both animal & human) return for a visit.

To tell me more about this heaven for wildlife, is Knepp's ecologist Penny Green. Penny shares the behind the scenes management of what keeps this place going & the work involved.

National Parks are celebrating their 75th anniversary this year in the UK & whilst we have all heard of the term, do many of us know what they are? How they were established? What was their purpose? And whether they are achieving their aim? Well nerds, don't worry, Into The Wild has your back!

28 May 2024S2E4: Insect Pollination: It's Not Just Bees!00:57:56

In the last decade there has been a HUGE (& successful) push for people to appreciate bees & the work they do to pollinate not just flowers in the wild, but food crops to feed ourselves & it's not surprise why the bee was chosen. They are fluffy. They are cute. They are.....sexy, BUT...

When it comes in insects that pollinate plants, again, including food crops, it's more than just bees & in some cases.....it's a lot more than just bees. Join Ryan & Nadia this month as they delve in to learn about some less sexy insects that are vital when it comes to keep flora alive.

03 Jul 2022Animal Rights Activism within Conservation with Dominic Dyer00:53:36

WE ARE BACK!

I hope you missed Into The Wild because we missed you! Our annual break is done & now time to write about the show.

If you are active on social media & follow nature & conservation content, then some of you may have noticed that animal rights activism is quite often connected with wildlife conservation, but how connected are they? To find out more I spoke with animal rights campaigner, Dominic Dyer.

I asked Dom where he things we have got things right in the UK & where he believes we have got things wrong. We also discuss the connection & ways that animal rights activism is connected & what it's done for wildlife conservation. We also managed, due to have apposing views, to sneak in a chat about trophy hunting, something we both agreed is needed more often.
