In this episode, Anne and Gin delve into the complexities of intermittent fasting for anyone with a history of eating disorders, the importance of professional guidance, and the profound emotional healing they've both experienced through this lifestyle change. Anne is an actress. Her story begins with a mystery illness that led to severe water retention in 2021, which had the potential to significantly impact her acting career. Despite visits to multiple doctors, her medical issue remained undiagnosed until she finally met with a nephrologist who helped her solve the issue. Anne then dives deep into her history of eating disorders, rooted in her family's fear of gaining weight. Her struggle with self-perception began at a young age, including bouts of anorexia and bulimia and emotional guilt around food which unfortunately affected her younger sister as well. In a heart-to-heart dialogue, both Anne and Gin explore the toxicity of diet culture, their personal battles with obesity and different types of disordered eating, and how intermittent fasting offered them freedom from persistent diet thoughts. Anne credits "The End of Cravings" audiobook for her shift away from artificial sweeteners and a deeper understanding of the role of processed foods in hunger. Intermittent fasting information from health industry figures like Dr. Rangan Chatterjee, Dr. Sachin Panda, and Dr. Jason Fung, along with Fast Feast Repeat, emerged as influential in Anne's fasting journey. intermittent fasting helped Anne reclaim her relationship with food and her body, liberating her from the fear that once consumed her. Anne’s advice: Read Gin’s books—they tell you everything you need to know. Don’t be rigid with your window. Give your body time to repair each day. Learn to trust your body. A relative had passed away when he was young, and he realized he would not live forever. Dr. Blander decided to dedicate his life to the study of aging. He moved to Boston in 2002, and received his PhD from MIT, with a focus on aging research. At the same time, he learned about intermittent fasting, studying its benefits on longevity. He learned that intermittent fasting lowers glucose and reduces inflammation, among other things. Dr. Blander has been living an intermittent fasting lifestyle for the last eight years, because his research showed its abundant health benefits. He fasts for health, not for weight loss, and his windows vary every day. Dr. Blander created his company, Inside Tracker, with the desire to help people live longer lives with personalized nutrition. Inside Tracker looks at what is going on in ones's body by looking at a variety of different blood markers and DNA analysis. This combined information helps Inside Tracker give the best recommendations for optimal health. IF with personalized nutrition is the best way to help you live a healthy and long life! The advice Dr. Blander would give new IFers: "The best intervention we have available for us today to live longer is IF. It is natural and simple. It's not easy for the first couple of weeks. In the Delay, Don’t Deny community we all embrace the clean fast, and there’s just the right support for you as you live your intermittent fasting lifestyle. But if you’re looking for support from a community of like-minded IFers, we are here for you at ginstephens.com/community. Bonnie is a licensed clinical social worker. She unintentionally started skipping dinner five years ago while her spouse was away, which a medical professional later identified to her as intermittent fasting. Excited to learn that it came with health benefits, she began researching. Bonnie found Gin's book Fast Feast Repeat and adopted the clean fast, which resulted in gradual but sustainable weight loss. Bonnie discusses the challenges and adjustments she faced when her husband retired and began preparing dinners each night, and she stopped fasting for two years. This led to weight regain, finding her at her highest weight of 165. Resuming an intentional intermittent fasting regimen, she committed to a 19:5 schedule from Monday to Thursday, and a more flexible eating pattern on weekends. This approach allowed her to regain control over her weight and enjoy the benefits of intermittent fasting, such as reduced inflammation and relief from various other symptoms. The conversation delves into the broader health benefits of intermittent fasting and touches on various lifestyle factors contributing to overall wellness, including sleep, nutrition, and exercise. Bonnie also shares how she integrates insights about the benefits of intermittent fasting into her therapy sessions. Gin and Bonnie underscore the significance of individualized fasting plans and the unpredictability of weight loss rates, emphasizing patience and persistence. Bonnie concludes the episode by reflecting on how intermittent fasting has given her a renewed lease on life, initially adopting the lifestyle without the goal of weight loss, but experiencing numerous unexpected health benefits. She advises listeners to maintain patience and perseverance, understanding that individualized approaches are crucial. Gin encourages leveraging resources like podcasts and books to deepen understanding and confidently share the lifestyle's benefits, even if faced with skepticism. Through her own experience, Bonnie's final advice is to embrace intermittent fasting as a sustainable, healthy lifestyle choice that can positively impact overall well-being. Christine tried her first diet and would spend the next two decades connecting her value to her weight. She went from diet to diet, endured high intensity workouts, and developed bulimia to manage her weight. Christine was both unhealthy and unhappy. Christine discovered IF in June of 2020, and began her IF journey right away. Christina has lost more than 40 pounds, but she feels her biggest victory has been the peace and freedom IF has brought to her life. Christine’s advice: Set a long-term goal but take it slow. Celebrate the non-scale victories more than the weight loss. Share IF with everyone. She had done Weight Watchers ten years prior and decided to try it again. However, this time the weight was not budging! Kristi found IF through a Weight Watchers online community chat. Then a friend told her about Delay, Don't Deny, and the DDD Facebook group. She also read Fast Feast Repeat and The Obesity Code. Kristi says: "IF was the first thing that made sense!" She began with a 16:8 protocol, quickly moving to 18:6. After three months of IF, she lost 30 pounds! Kristi's health benefits: A great deal of energy, and she no longer has heartburn, nor restless legs. Her advice to new IFers: Don't stop! 03 Oct 2024 | Episode 434: Adam and Katie Bergdahl | 00:56:36
In this episode of Intermittent Fasting Stories, Gin talks to Adam and Katie Bergdahl from New Richmond, WI. Are you ready to take your intermittent fasting lifestyle to the next level? There’s nothing better than community to help with that. In the Delay, Don’t Deny community we all embrace the clean fast, and there’s just the right support for you as you live your intermittent fasting lifestyle. But if you’re looking for support from a community of like-minded IFers, we are here for you at ginstephens.com/community. Adam is in the lawn care industry and Katie is a scheduler at a clinic. Adam always felt he was “too small” as an athlete in high school and couldn’t seem to gain weight, but all of that reversed after he played football in college and gained weight over time, ending up at an uncomfortable 270 pounds. He dabbled with various weight loss approaches such as keto, but didn’t enjoy eating feeling like a math problem. No matter what he did, he couldn’t get below 250 and would yo-yo back up to 270. Then, in 2022, he heard a jiu-jitsu martial artist on the Joe Rogan podcast who explained intermittent fasting. Intrigued, Adam began researching, and was even more excited when he discovered some IFers in the crossfit community who shared how IF helped them gain muscle. He started that day, with a gentle 12:12 that he gradually increased to 16:8. Now, he flexes his IF approach from day to day as it fits his schedule. His wife Katie watched what he was doing for a few weeks and then joined him. She started with 14:10, which she gradually expanded to 16:8 and then 18:6. She finally began to see weight loss at 18:6, and now has settled into a 20:4 pattern most days. She talks about the psychological challenge of focusing on numbers and the importance of shifting the mindset to celebrating non-scale victories, such as reduced inflammation and transitioning to black coffee. They both find themselves gravitating towards healthier options like fruits and vegetables, while still allowing themselves occasional sweets without guilt. The discussion addresses the societal shame associated with certain foods and how intermittent fasting has shifted their perspective, promoting a healthier relationship with food. Adam admits to his ongoing struggle with temptation but finds reassurance in ultimately making healthier choices. As the episode continues, they discuss the significant psychological and emotional aspects of weight management. Katie shares her eventual decision to stop daily weigh-ins, finding both freedom and trust in her body through intermittent fasting. Adam and Katie also talk about how fasting has positively impacted their relationship and self-confidence, and Katie opens up about the difficulties of finding wholesome food during hectic times. Wrapping up, Adam emphasizes the importance of flexibility in intermittent fasting, discussing how rigid approaches can lead to plateaus. They both encourage beginners to start slow, enjoy the journey, and focus on non-scale victories. Adam advises paying attention to body composition, while Katie recommends taking before-and-after pictures and seeking educational resources. Together, they underscore the strength found in community and learning from others' experiences. Get Gin’s books at: https://www.ginstephens.com/get-the-books.html. Good news! 24 Oct 2024 | Episode 437: Alison Pizanie | 00:54:45
In this episode of Intermittent Fasting Stories, Gin talks to Alison Pizanie from Medford, NJ. Alison is an elementary special education teacher, and the author of The Regain Remedy. Alison shares her lifelong battle with weight problems and emotional eating. Alison describes how anxiety and shyness led her to use food for comfort from childhood, perpetuating a cycle of emotional eating, dieting, and weight fluctuation. She recounts her experience with various diets and weight loss methods, from Weight Watchers to the cabbage soup diet, and she ultimately opted for weight loss surgery in 2016. Despite initial weight loss success, losing 90 pounds in the first year, Alison faced numerous challenges post-surgery, including physiological side effects and eventual weight regain. Her turning point came when she discovered the book Delay, Don't Deny, which introduced her to intermittent fasting and transformed her approach to weight management. Alison notes how adopting intermittent fasting helped prevent further weight gain and soon she began to see her weight trending back down. She was delighted with ten pounds of loss the first year, which turned into twenty, getting her back to her lowest post-surgery weight. At that point she realized she still had fat to lose, and decided to focus on consistent fasting windows, particularly on weekends, and has gone on to lose seven more pounds, and she is still slowly losing. While telling her story, Alison provides insight into the physiological aspects of weight regain post-surgery, such as stomach stretching and calorie intake through liquids and slider foods. Since approximately 75% of patients experience “considerable” weight regain within 6 years, she wants to provide hope to this large community that there is a solution, which motivated her to write her book, The Regain Remedy, available on Amazon. Gin and Alison discuss the importance of finding the right eating window for your body. They highlight mindful eating and celebrate non-scale victories, such as increased confidence, energy levels, and reduced clothing sizes. The episode concludes with a reflection on the tangible success Alison has achieved through intermittent fasting. Alison finishes by offering her final advice: embrace intermittent fasting with a slow and conservative approach, understand the science behind it, trust the process, and consult with your doctor to tailor the lifestyle to your individual needs. She emphasizes that the magic is in the repeat. Get Gin’s books at: https://www.ginstephens.com/get-the-books.html. Good news! Kate is a homeschooling mom of 4, a new teacher, and she also helps her husband run his chiropractic business. Kate's personal journey with intermittent fasting began after reaching her highest weight of 231 pounds. Following the challenges of motherhood that led her to put self-care on hold, Kate found a path to sustainable change through IF. She delves into her experience of trying the "Fast 800" diet, and her shift to the Delay, Don't Deny approach to fasting in 2020, detailing how COVID-19 was both a setback due to a return to regular eating and a blessing in disguise that provided her family with more quality time together and improved sleep for her. Kate and Gin candidly share their past battles with extreme diets such as the Fast 800 for Kate and the HCG diet for Gin, acknowledging the difficulties and potential negative impacts of these types of diets that call for severe calorie restriction. They contrast those experiences with the benefits of intermittent fasting, celebrating the freedom and ease it provides compared to the constant restriction they had previously endured. Kate recounts her remarkable weight loss journey, dropping from 220 to 158 pounds at her lowest, and how she experienced body recomposition, resulting in a significant reduction in her clothing size, while her overall health, including her hair, nails, skin, vision, and mental clarity, improved noticeably. Both reflect on finding the right balance in protein intake, with Gin discussing the protein leverage hypothesis, and how they've learned to listen to their bodies to determine individual nutritional needs, rather than adhering to generic dietary advice. Kate's narrative extends beyond her own transformation to include her family's wellness journey. With intuitive eating at its core, Kate's children benefit from the opportunity to eat according to their hunger while her husband practices a 16:8 fasting method. Drawing from her weight loss experience, Kate relays how she embraced a more fulfilling and active lifestyle, recently completing a 54 km hike in New Zealand, and how at 50, she pursued a master's degree in teaching, attributing her renewed focus and clarity to her fasting regimen. Both Kate and her husband advocate for intermittent fasting within his chiropractic practice, suggesting resources such as the book Fast. Feast. Repeat. to those curious about the lifestyle. The episode concludes with Kate offering heartfelt advice to newcomers to intermittent fasting. She suggests that a successful start consists of prioritizing restful sleep, tracking the eating window honestly, and delighting in delicious, nourishing foods. Emphasizing the importance of listening to one's own body and cravings, Kate highlights the mental satisfaction that comes with enjoying what we eat. Beyond diet, she encourages a trust in the process and the self, reminding listeners that the journey to health is as unique as the individual embarking on it. Her final words of wisdom reflect her journey's theme: to find joy and empowerment through intuitive, mindful fasting and eating. 25 Jun 2020 | Jennifer Jenson | 00:51:47
In this episode of Intermittent Fasting Stories, Gin talks to Jennifer Jenson from Bennington, ID. Fast. Feast. Repeat. The Comprehensive Guide to Delay, Don't Deny Intermittent Fasting: Now available everywhere books are sold! Get your copy through your favorite bookstore by following this link:http://www.ginstephens.com/get-the-books.html This episode is sponsored by Ritual Essentials for Women: Ritual's Essentials have the nutrients most of us don't get enough of from food. Visit ritual.com/IFStories to get 10% off during your first three months. Jennifer is an organic dairy farmer and mother of four. Jennifer grew up on a dairy farm, and was very active and slender as a child. She recalls that her parents encouraged eating until satisfaction. However, her husband was raised 'not to waste food,' and once they married, she developed a habit of overeating. She had gestational diabetes with all of her four pregnancies. With her last pregnancy, her doctor put her on medication, and this left her feeling exhausted all the time. The weight she gained while pregnant never came off, and Jennifer began to notice health symptoms that told her something else was going on. She found out from her doctor that her thyroid was not functioning properly. And after many attempts with various medications, her doctor was unsuccessful at helping to regulate her thyroid. In July of 2019, a friend told Jennifer about intermittent fasting, but she didn't think she could do it. Months later, she felt "all hope had been lost." Because none of the medication worked, IF seemed to be her last hope. She began with a 16:8 protocol, and within two weeks, moved to 20:4. Her "puffiness" went away almost immediately. She has had many NSVs, (Non Scale Victories). Jennifer now feels more in control of her mental health. The "emotional roller coaster" is gone, she feels more calm, she is able to work through stress, and she feels more like herself. Jennifer has lost 35 pounds, and will do IF for the rest of her life. The advice she'd give new IFers: "IF gives you the hope you're looking for, and it gives you the glimmer of the life that will be better than it is now." Todd says, "Going to OMAD was the single most important advancement in my wellness, than anything else I have ever done. I felt so much better." He follows OMAD to stay healthy and lean. Todd says that, "eating less and eating less often, along with controlling blood sugar, can help avoid the over-production of insulin." This is also known as hyperinsulinemia, about which he says: "I believe is the leading cause for most chronic illnesses." Todd explains the mission of Dry Farm Wines, which is the largest importer and reseller of natural wines in the world. They do not sell domestic wines, as there is no wine produced in the US that meets their standards of purity. She was born with digestive issues, and in her teens, she was diagnosed with IBS and hypothyroidism. This began a long road of food obsession for Lisa, as she desperately tried everything to help her IBS symptoms. Though she did not struggle with her weight, Lisa felt the pressure to maintain it. She spent years following diet programs, taking diet pills, and counting calories. Lisa was all-consumed and miserable. In May of 2022, Lisa came across an article on how autophagy could help with hypothyroidism. This ultimately led her to Fast Feast Repeat. Lisa calls her IF journey a mental health journey in healing her distorted thinking. She now enjoys freedom, awareness, and the ability to listen to her body. Lisa’s advice: Fast clean. 30 Jul 2020 | Dennis Gardon | 00:53:50
In this episode of Intermittent Fasting Stories, Gin talks to Dennis Gardon, an aspiring chef from New Jersey. This episode is brought to you by Ritual Essential Vitamins: Looking for high quality vitamins? Ritual is now available for both women AND men! Go to ritual.com/ifstories to save 10% per month for your first three months. Dennis is an aspiring chef who works in a hospital. In April of 2016, Dennis signed a contract to live and work as a cook in Hawaii. Once there, he wrote down four goals for his time there. One of his goals was to lose 100 pounds. He searched the internet for "weight loss" and "fitness," stumbling across the Hodge Twins. They talked all about Intermittent Fasting, and how to do it. Dennis says he "baby stepped IF," simply moving breakfast later and later in the morning. He eventually settled on opening his window at 4 pm with a family meal. His weight loss was a consistent 2 pounds a week, and when it slowed, he tweaked things a bit. He removed sugar during the week, enjoying treats on Sundays. Once he moved back to New Jersey, Dennis started lifting weights, shortened his window even more, and could now fit into a size XL chef's coat! He has lost around 55 pounds overall, and now weighs 220 pounds. The health benefits Dennis has experienced are improved sleep, no longer needing an afternoon nap, and lots of energy! The advice he'd give new IFers is: "Getting started is the hardest part, but it gets easy. 'Baby Step' IF. Journal your progress and take before & after photos." 06 May 2021 | Robin January | 00:52:17
In this episode of Intermittent Fasting Stories, Gin talks to Robin January from Fayetteville, AR. Let me tell you about the Delay, Don’t Deny Social Network! Besides the freedom of IF, community is what I most want to offer the world. Instead of relying on the big social network most of us have been on for years, we now have a community that is completely separate and just for us. Members of the DDD Social Network have access to all episodes of Intermittent Fasting Stories within the DDDSN platform, ad-free! That’s just one reason to join. Visit dddsocialnetwork.com to see what else we offer in our membership community. An annual membership is $59.95 and you have access to dozens of groups that we created with you in mind. You can join as many groups as you want and connect with members who share your interests. If you aren’t ready to fully commit for a year, join for $9.99 a month and you can cancel at any time. If you know you’ll want to stay forever, we also have a lifetime membership option available. IF is free. You don’t need to join our community to fast. But if you’re looking for support from a community of like-minded IFers, we are here for you at dddsocialnetwork.com. Robin works at a university lab in the Food Science Department. In the summer of 2018, Robin was diagnosed with a torn artery in her neck which resulted in several mini-strokes. She then developed a brain aneurysm. Her doctor immediately ordered her to go on bed rest for the next four months, with the warning “do not gain weight.” That same summer, Robin's mother had her watch a talk show segment on IF. Robin's response: "IF is a fancy word for starvation." But as she began to gain weight, Robin decided to give IF a try. For the first several months, Robin added cream to her coffee, having no knowledge of the clean fast. Robin stumbled upon Delay, Don't Deny, and learned about the clean fast. The transition to the clean fast made the fast easy. Robin eventually moved to a morning eating window. She currently follows 20:4, with a weekly longer fast. She has lost 25 pounds, going from a size 14 to a size 6. Robin's health has radically improved. Her brain aneurysm has healed. Her psoriasis, which covered her entire body, is now almost gone completely. She also has improved gum health after a 14-year battle with gum disease. Robin's advice to new IFers: "Find a reason to fast that is completely independent of weight loss. Look for small victories. Be content with health benefits if you're not losing weight at first. Don't be afraid to try things that seem scary." Get Gin’s books at http://www.ginstephens.com/get-the-books.html, including her New York Times Bestseller, Fast. Feast. He shares his early life experiences growing up in a tavern environment, his battle with alcoholism, and his experience with substance abuse, ending with a recovery process via a twelve-step program and inpatient rehab at the age of 34. Gin and Troy talk about the importance of non-scale victories and the remarkable improvements in Troy's physical, mental, and spiritual health since he started intermittent fasting. They touch on the misconceptions about eating windows and the metabolic benefits of finding a balanced approach to fasting. Troy’s story is not just about intermittent fasting – it's about personal growth, self-discovery, and the sometimes difficult path to self-improvement. He highlights how his commitment to change has led to his body feeling satisfied and on a path to better health. Advice from Troy: Initially, early on, I wanted to preach on this to anybody that listened. Now, I have a link on my phone and a picture of Gin’s book just saved in my photos, and I can just show people. If you really want to know what I'm doing and about the changes you see in me, this is it. If you really want to know, get this book, read the book, and then we can talk about it. As for IF, just trust in it. No matter how it works in the first week or the first month or whatever, just trust in it. In February of 2019, her husband shared The Obesity Code with her, along with information on how to do a clean fast. Skeptical and doubtful at first, Laurel decided to do her own IF research. She found Gin's podcasts and joined her Facebook groups. After reading all that she could on IF, Laurel decided it was something she could indeed try! Both she and her husband found that IF was relatively easy for them, and within the first six months they had each lost almost 70 pounds. A year later, Laurel has almost lost 100 pounds. She typically fasts from 20-21 hours a day. She feels great, has great energy, and no longer hides from being in pictures. Her joint pain is gone. Her acid reflux went away. IF will be her lifestyle forever! The advice Laurel would give new IFers: "It's not your fault that you're overweight. It's not about willpower. IF sounds like an extreme diet, but it is not! 22 Apr 2021 | Sarah Sanger | 00:53:52
In this episode of Intermittent Fasting Stories, Gin talks to Sarah Sanger from San Diego, CA. Sarah found that she struggled in her relationship with food: she was either feeling guilty or deprived, no matter what she ate. Diet mindset controlled her. Sarah first learned about IF from her dad, who is an Anesthesiologist. He shares IF with everyone who will listen, but Sarah always opposed it. After a food-indulgent vacation in December of 2019, she finally decided to give 16:8 a try. She has lost 12 pounds, and currently follows a 21:3 protocol. Sarah has had many non-scale victories. Her tastes have dramatically changed. She now craves all sorts of veggies and loves to cook! Her anxiety has drastically improved, as IF helps her to feel more calm. Sarah's advice to new IFers: "The first few weeks are hard, but you'll be so glad that didn’t give up. Give IF a chance!" 23 May 2024 | Episode 415: Christina Murphy | 00:54:00
In this episode of Intermittent Fasting Stories, Gin talks to Christina Murphy. Christina is from Marietta, GA and now lives in Wicklow, Ireland. Christina is a zookeeper, and she also appears on a TV show called The Zoo. In 2022, Christina discovered she had hip dysplasia, and she could no longer run. Doctors told her that she would probably need a hip replacement in about 10 years, and that was hard for a 36-year-old to hear. They also let her know that if she lost weight, she would find some relief. So, Christina started searching, and found intermittent fasting. Christina decided to start with 16:8, and she shares the challenges of her very first day fasting, which involved the physical task of catching 100 flamingos for bird flu vaccines. During the conversation, the pair delve into the differences in animal and human eating habits, with Christina drawing parallels from her job as a zookeeper, culminating in humorous stories about her work with animals, including penguins, and her previous experience at the Georgia Aquarium. Christina and Gin discuss the importance of finding an eating schedule compatible with one's lifestyle and discuss how Christina and her husband, who also adopted intermittent fasting, have gained freedom and time for personal development. They touch on the significance of not obsessing over the scale, utilizing "honesty pants" as a gauge instead, and engaging in new physical activities like sea swimming, which also contributes to Christina's well-being. Christina concludes with valuable advice for listeners, urging them not to get lost in the extremities of dieting and to maintain a sustainable and flexible approach to intermittent fasting. She emphasizes the importance of being gentle with oneself, embracing a fasting method that adapts to life events, and not being overly restrictive. Christina's parting wisdom encapsulates the spirit of her story—fast clean, and find a balance that allows you to maintain a healthy weight and active lifestyle without compromising life's joys. 07 Oct 2021 | Abby Stadlin | 00:55:37
In this episode of Intermittent Fasting Stories, Gin talks to Abby Stadlin from Cleveland, OH. Gin’s new book Clean(ish) is available for preorder! Gin wants to show you how to become clean(ish) where it counts: you’ll learn how to eat (mostly) clean and live (mainly) clean as you unlock your body’s natural ability to self-clean. Instead of aiming for perfection (which is impossible) or changing everything at once (which is hard, and never leads to lasting change), you’ll cut through the confusion, lose the fear, and embrace the freedom that comes from becoming clean(ish). As you learn how to lower your toxic load through small changes, smart swaps, and simple solutions, you’ll breathe a (clean) sigh of relief and embrace your own personal evolution toward becoming clean(ish). Go to https://www.ginstephens.com/cleanish.html for more information. The book will be released on 1/4/22, but you can preorder now through Amazon or your favorite online book retailer. Preordering is really important, as it gives the publisher an idea of how many books to print. Abby is the owner of an Ace Hardware. Abby was a lifetime dieter, trying every new diet that came along: from low calorie to low carb, and everything in between. The diet would work, but then Abby would gain back all of the weight she lost. By 2017, Abby reached her highest weight and decided to give up. She thought, "I'm done fighting. I'm just a large girl." But Abby was still unhappy with her weight, and worried about her health. In 2019, she overheard a group of ladies discussing IF. Abby researched 'intermittent fasting,' and found both Delay, Don't Deny, and The Obesity Code. She also joined the DDD Facebook group. Abby began with 16:8, quickly moving to 23:1 within weeks. She has gone from 225 pounds to 182 pounds, which is the smallest she has ever been! Abby's advice to new IFers: "Look to the science behind IF. Join the IF support groups. Listen to the IF podcasts." Get Gin’s books at http://www.ginstephens.com/get-the-books.html, including her New York Times Bestseller, Fast. Feast. Repeat., available wherever you buy books! Let me tell you about the Delay, Don’t Deny Social Network! Besides the freedom of IF, community is what I most want to offer the world. Langston played for the University of South Carolina, and was then drafted to play for Cincinnati, Arizona, and Detroit. He played in the NFL for a total of seven years. Langston is also an author of two books for children and hosts a podcast. Langston uses IF to help keep himself "in check." While playing football: "we consume a lot of calories and expend a lot of calories." After football was over, he used intermittent fasting to get the weight off. IF has helped him with reducing inflammation, easing his joint pain due to football injuries, improved digestion, and better sleep. Langston got his weight below 290 pounds by following 16:8. Langston's advice to new IFers: "Just try! See how long you can make it. Take incremental steps." Emily shares that she always had a problem with her weight, beginning as a child. She tried countless diets and calorie counting, but would always gain back the weight. In August of 2020, doctors found a cancerous nodule on her thyroid. The treatment and surgery left her extremely weak and caused her to gain weight. Calorie counting wasn't working, and Emily was discouraged. While she was listening to a podcast, intermittent fasting and Delay, Don't Deny were mentioned. Emily immediately read it, along with Fast Feast Repeat and The Obesity Code. She began her IF journey in January of 2021, and has lost 20 pounds. Emily feels total freedom with food and rejoices that she'll never need to diet again! Emily's advice: "Follow Gin! Take the time to get fat adapted. You can start slow. It's not a race." Nikki shares that she began dieting in junior high when her entire family went on a diet program together. She read Delay, Don't Deny in 2019. In May of 2020, after her second pregnancy, Nikki went back to IF. She has lost 20 pounds, has a ton of energy and improved mental clarity, is more active, and no longer needs her afternoon latte! The advice Nikki would give to new IFers: "Be patient. 29 Oct 2020 | Debbie Young | 00:57:22
In this episode of Intermittent Fasting Stories, Gin talks to Debbie Young, a health coach from Bend, Oregon who uses intermittent fasting with her clients. This episode is brought to you by Audible. To try Audible for free and get your free audiobook, visit Audible.com/ifstories or text ifstories to 500-500. Prior to IF, Debbie lost weight with Keto, but then gained all of it back, plus more. She eventually found herself pre-diabetic with high blood pressure, and, at 5' 0’, weighing 155 pounds. "I lost who I was," she says. Debbie first came across Dr. Jason Fung. In an attempt to jump back into Keto, she followed his "Fat Fast," which is 48 hours of only ingesting fat. Around this time, Debbie found the Intermittent Fasting Podcast, and after listening to all of them, realized that she was fasting wrong. She was already fat-adapted, but switched to a clean fast in July of 2019. She started with one meal a day with a 3-4 hour window. After a year of IF, Debbie has lost 30 pounds. Her A1C and blood pressure levels have both normalized. She is no longer pre-diabetic, and no longer an emotional eater: "I'm no longer obsessed with food!" The advice she'd give new IFers: "Clean fast! Low carb at first can help your hunger. As you're adjusting to IF, when you feel hungry, drink water, wait 15 minutes, and know that you're burning fat. That wave of hunger will go away. Ride the wave!" 12 May 2020 | Episode 86: Paul Brodie | 00:57:22
In this episode of Intermittent Fasting Stories, Gin talks to Paul Brodie. Paul is a best selling author and a publisher who runs Brodie Consulting. He helps people share their stories with the world, and in this episode, he shares how intermittent fasting has changed his life and improved his health. At Paul's highest weight of 340 pounds, his doctor told with him that he was prediabetic, had high blood pressure, high blood sugar, thyroid issues, and "would be dead in five years" if he did not lose weight. Paul focused on counting calories, and that worked for awhile. He lost 60 pounds and kept it off. But then he plateaued, and could not lose any more weight. In July of 2019, another doctor suggested IF, and he started right away. Paul keeps a daily 17:7 routine, and has lost 20 pounds. He shared IF on his personal Facebook page, and someone commented about Gin's book, Delay, Don't Deny and her DDD Facebook group. Paul's goal is to eventually get off his thyroid meds, as he loves the way IF heals the body! The advice he'd give to people who'd like to write their IF story: "Just get started. Think of 10 different talking points to cover in your book. Try to find a way to record yourself, and start talking. Consider 10 minutes of audio for each chapter. That will be the foundation of your book." The advice he'd give to new IFers: "Trust the process. You have to get used to water and black coffee. IF takes time!" Paul feels like a completely different person, and is totally committed to IF for the rest of his life. In January of 2020, she found herself at her highest weight of 220 pounds. She learned about intermittent fasting from both a co-worker and her dietician. However, not knowing about the clean fast, Megan thought IF was too hard. In September of that same year, her sister shared OMAD (One Meal A Day) with her and Megan was all in! She needed inspiration and motivation and found the IF Stories podcast. It was then that she learned about the magic of the clean fast. Megan has lost 60 pounds and loves the OMAD lifestyle. Her biggest Non-Scale Victory has been the ability to face stressful situations instead of turning to food to cope. Megan’s advice: “If you can get through the hardest part of IF, it will become an effortless lifestyle. Don’t let black coffee get in the way of you and your forever health.” Get Gin’s books at: http://www.ginstephens.com/get-the-books.html, including Cleanish and New York Times Bestseller, Fast. 12 Nov 2020 | Lisa Glick | 00:57:21
In this episode of Intermittent Fasting Stories, Gin talks to Lisa Glick, a retired music educator and fitness enthusiast who lives in Tuscon, AZ. This episode is brought to you by BlendJet. BlendJet is the original portable blender that makes it easy to create a fresh beverage anywhere. Go to blendjet.com/ifstories right now to save an extra 12% on your purchase. Lisa was diagnosed with anorexia at age sixteen and began following an unhealthy form of intermittent fasting around the same time. She continued this until college. But once she began eating normally again, she could not stop. Her anorexia then turned to bulimia, and as a result, Lisa gained 20 pounds. She feels that her disordered eating was directly connected to her Bipolar Disorder. Bipolar Disorder is "a disorder associated with episodes of mood swings ranging from depressive lows to manic highs." Once properly diagnosed, medicated, and in therapy, Lisa felt she could reclaim her life. She finally had hope. Lisa and her husband are long distance runners and found IF through their running community. She began with keto, then transitioned to a less restrictive low carb approach coupled with IF. She follows OMAD (One Meal a Day). The health benefits Lisa has experienced are numerous! She has seen a huge reduction of inflammation, and both her chronic headaches and plantar fasciitis are gone. She is less anxious, and her recovery time from long runs has markedly improved. Lisa has gone from 160 pounds to 115 pounds, and is now at a healthy weight. The advice she'd give to new IFers: "Ease into IF. Begin with 16:8. Skip breakfast. Stop comparing yourself. Everyone is individual. IF is like a muscle. You have to train it. Don't think of IF as a punishment, think of it as a gift." Get Gin’s books, including her latest New York Times Bestseller, Fast. Feast. 30 Sep 2021 | David Mangene | 00:54:19
In this episode of Intermittent Fasting Stories, Gin talks to author, teacher, and comedian David Mangene. David learned of IF from his girlfriend, and he researched how it might help his bipolar depression. David’s goals were the health benefits IF might bring, and not necessarily the weight loss. He began IF in the Summer of 2020, and a year later, his depression has drastically improved. He's also lost 30 pounds! David's advice: If you think you can do it, you definitely can. IF is easier than you think. Our bodies were built to eat this way. David also wrote a book, How Not to Kill Yourself; Ten Tips for Troubled Times. He wrote it to bring hope for those who struggle with depression, and the ones who love them. It is available on Kindle through Amazon. Get Gin’s books at http://www.ginstephens.com/get-the-books.html, including her New York Times Bestseller, Fast. Feast. She knew it was time to do something. A girlfriend shared Gin’s book with her. The science behind IF made sense to Lori, and she began her journey in January of 2020. He heard about intermittent fasting on YouTube, but was confused because of all of the conflicting information. When he found Delay, Don't Deny, intermittent fasting made sense to him, and he began his IF journey. Brian has lost a total of 45 pounds. His skin tags fell off, he has cut down on his blood pressure meds, he sleeps better, and he feels 20 years younger! You can find Brian's podcast, Slowing Down: the Inevitable Embarrassment of Growing Old, where he discusses longevity using IF, yoga, and other ancient practices. Brian's advice: Stick it out. If IF feels hard at first, know it won't stay that way. Your body is working hard on the inside. In this episode of Intermittent Fasting Stories, Gin talks to Cheryl Beckerich from Indianapolis, IN. Are you ready to take your intermittent fasting lifestyle to the next level? There’s nothing better than community to help with that. But if you’re looking for support from a community of like-minded IFers, we are here for you at ginstephens.com/community. Cheryl loves to knit, she writes knitting patterns, and she works as marketing and communications manager for a church. She recounts how a podcast by Joanna Penn led her to explore intermittent fasting after hearing Gin as a guest. Despite her religious familiarity with fasting, its connection with weight loss was a novel concept for her. Cheryl lost around 20 pounds over the first six months of her intermittent fasting journey, typically fasting between 18 and 20 hours a day. She enjoys traditional foods without guilt and stays active. Her body has settled into a healthy weight range for her height, and she doesn’t have to think about what she does from day to day—the lifestyle feels natural, and it’s simply what she does. In her final advice to newcomers to intermittent fasting, Cheryl stresses the importance of easing in and maintaining a clean fast by avoiding any consumables that mimic the taste of food, like gum or diet beverages. Her parting words encourage beginners to stick with it and trust the process, highlighting the significance of perseverance for long-term success and overall wellbeing.
