28 Mar 2024239: Why You Should "Run It Like A Business"00:38:00

My guest for this episode is Aubrey Bergauer. Aubrey is known for her results-driven, customer-centric, data-obsessed pursuit of changing the narrative for the performing arts. A “dynamic administrator” with a drive for innovation, she’s held offstage roles managing millions in revenue at major institutions, including the Seattle Symphony, Seattle Opera, Bumbershoot Music & Arts Festival, and San Francisco Conservatory of Music. As chief executive of the California Symphony, Aubrey propelled the organization to double the size of its audience and nearly quadrupled the donor base.

02 Feb 2023196: From Nothing to This! An Inspiring Story00:32:10

My guest today is Jessica R. Munoz. Jessica is a clinical emergency/trauma nurse practitioner, and she is the Founder & CEO of Hoʻōla Nā Pua Pua (HNP), which means "New life for our children", a nonprofit organization whose mission is the prevention of child sex trafficking and providing care for youth who have been exploited. Rooted on the “justice gene in her DNA”, Jessica’s passion to “forever shine the light” into the dark places and watch new life come forth shapes her vision and life’s mission.

She has 16 years of healthcare experience, entrepreneurship, community advocacy, transformational systems change, and leadership. She has built multiple partnerships across diverse sectors, both public and private, to bring a unified response and resources to ending the exploitation of children through a public health and systems change lens.

Over the past 14 years, she has published articles and provided training and strategies on prevention, identification, intervention, and response for hundreds of healthcare professionals, service providers, law enforcement, and community leaders. She works closely with the judiciary, district attorneys, and state, federal, and local law enforcement to help shape a multi-disciplinary collaborative response to trafficked youth and young adults in Hawaii and beyond.

Since 2009, Jessica and her team have been driving the anti-trafficking movement in the Hawaiian Islands, the Pacific, and across the national landscape. Her passion to serve exploited children and her pursuit of a comprehensive understanding of their needs have fostered her role as a trainer and advisor in Cameroon, Africa, with Vital Voices Global Partnership. She has also provided training on trauma-informed survivor-centered care, medical services, and multidisciplinary building teams in Samoa, Cambodia, Africa, Guatemala, Mexico, Africa, and Thailand.

Jessica envisioned, developed, and opened Pearl Haven---Hawaii’s first residential treatment campus for sexually exploited teenage girls. A model of care that has gained national attention and recognition.

Of note, she and her team worked with CBS and the executive producers of the TV show Hawaii Five-0 to bring awareness through their 2017 episode, which highlights the issue of child sex trafficking in Hawaii and the work being done by Jessica’s organization. This episode had over 8.9 million viewers in the first viewing and multiple PSAs created by the cast to help spread awareness.

Here’s what to expect during the episode:

23 Jan 2020047: What's a board executive session? Good or bad?00:11:33

This is one of our bonus episodes – a moment with . Mary

“When you dance, your purpose is not to get to a certain place on the floor. It’s to enjoy each step along the way.”

Wayne Dyer

The board-executive director relationship is a dance. The whole team is dancing together! One thing that can throw everyone off balance or mess up the cadence is how the board manages (or doesn’t) executive sessions.

Mary shares her experience that most executive directors don’t want their boards to meet without them on issues other than their own performance or compensation. On the other hand, there are executives who don’t seem to be bothered by it and some even encourage it. Not only is there disagreement about the practice, there is even disagreement about the definition!

What to do! Listen in for some definitions and tips.

17 Feb 2022155: Tips to Harness the Power of Clarity00:36:40

My guest for this episode is Ann Latham. Ann is the author of THE POWER OF CLARITY and THE CLARITY PAPERS. You might assume she is obsessed with clarity, and she is. Before quitting her corporate job to start her own consulting business, she asked numerous colleagues what it was that she did exceptionally well that was most uncommon. The responses all pointed to the same thing, and she named her company Uncommon Clarity® based on those insights.

Her clients represent over 40 industries and range from for-profit organizations such as Boeing, Hitachi, and Medtronic to nonprofits such as the Public Broadcasting Service, United Way, Zoo New England, colleges and universities, and numerous smaller nonprofits.

Ann’s mission is to teach others how to create clarity because the potential gains in productivity, confidence, and empowerment are truly great. Her book, The Power of Clarity, reveals the scope and scale of the opportunity greater clarity provides, as well as techniques for harnessing its power.

Ann has been interviewed by publications such as The New York Times, Bloomberg, and MSNBC, and is an expert blogger for Forbes.com, where she writes about--you guessed it--the power of clarity.

Last but not least, Ann is pretty sure she is the sole recipient of a corporate award that she cherishes to this day: Most Likely To Dispute Recognized Authorities.

Here’s what to expect during the episode:

  • What does clarity mean, and what does it mean to have clarity?
  • How can you turn clarity into a problem-solving superpower?
  • Why do most people not know what clarity means?
  • How does clarity improve decision-making in an executive team in the nonprofit?
  • Cognitive Processing: What is it and why is it important?

07 Sep 2023219: How to Use Gratitude as a Leader00:39:01

My guest for this episode is Kathleen Panning. Kathleen earned her Master of Divinity Degree from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN. She was ordained as a pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in 1980. She has served congregations in rural and urban settings, ranging in size from 150 to 6000+ members.

Retiring from parish ministry in 2014, that year she became the first clergy person to become a Fascinate® Certified Advisor, using the How To Fascinate® material with faith leaders, nonprofits, and their leadership board to help them improve communication and work together as a team.

For about 5.5 years, Kathleen hosted a live, weekly radio show that was heard internationally. Her guest list included people who talked about spirituality, nonprofit leadership, mission and purpose, and just about anything that can relate to being a leader in a faith community or nonprofit.  Kathleen now has a new podcast, Tilted Halo, for women of faith in leadership who feel pressured to be perfect but know perfectly well that they are not.

Her passion is to speak about and train leaders on the power of gratitude to transform their personal lives and their organization to bring greater clarity of purpose and appreciation for family, staff, employees, clients, and the larger community. Doing this will have a positive impact on employee satisfaction and retention, client or customer satisfaction and engagement, and community relationships, all leading to a healthier bottom line.

  • What is gratitude, and why is it important?
  • How does the practice of gratitude influence effective leadership within nonprofit organizations?

15 Apr 2021111: Group Alchemy: What Is It And Why Do You Need It?00:37:37

Award winning, best-selling author and nonprofit consultant, Dr. Deborah Pruitt believes that every group is capable of greatness.

Her programs are committed to teaching transformational leaders how to create a strong culture of collaboration that converts untapped capabilities into extraordinary results. Her clients describe breakthroughs in clarity, effectiveness and camaraderie, using phrases like “sea change” and “life changing” to describe the effects of learning the habits of collaboration that Deborah calls “Group Alchemy®.”

In Group Alchemy®, Deborah translates her thirty years of cross-cultural research as an anthropologist into straight talk about how culture underpins everything in an organization and determines what is possible. Drawing on more than twenty years of organizational-effectiveness consulting in nonprofits she developed a formula of practical steps to guide any group to uncover the obstacles in their way, and to carve out the path forward that will support true collaboration, initiative, and creativity. This means they go from struggling to achieving extraordinary results while also building more enriching ways of working together.

The Formula for Group Alchemy is explained in her book, Group Alchemy: This Six Elements of Highly Successful Collaboration.

Deborah earned her doctorate degree in anthropology from the University of California at Berkeley.

Here’s what to expect during the episode:

  • What is group alchemy? How does it deal with intractable problems?
  • An in-depth look at what culture really is. There’s an ideal culture, but also the real culture.
  • The value of creating an organizational culture that fixes its own problems.
  • Involving the people into the work we do by properly addressing our tendency to be in a position of control.
  • If things are going well, how do you ensure that it continues into the future?

19 Sep 2019031: 3 Board Orientation Mistakes00:09:15

This is a bonus episode with Mary.

Nonprofit organizations provide critical and life-enhancing services to our communities. If you are a nonprofit executive or board member, you know first-hand what a valuable role you play.

We all have a stake in nonprofits’ success. And, we know that to be successful a nonprofit must be led by an effective board of directors.

One of the biggest opportunities to ensure a nonprofit board realizes its full potential is in orienting new board members.

But, orienting board members effectively isn’t easy. Nonprofits often make 3 mistakes when orienting board members.

In this bonus episode, Mary discusses these three mistakes.

Please be sure to subscribe and, while you’re at it, rate and review.

04 May 2023206: Youth Initiative Changes Lives00:34:39

My guest for this episode is Devika Narayanan. Devika is a university student studying Manufacturing Engineering in India. For the past few years, she has been helping build and scale a non-profit organization named Nostos Homes. Nostos builds innovative homes for families that have lost their homes due to climate disasters like floods or cyclones.

Providing safe and secure homes and medical and social infrastructure for families that have been forcibly displaced allows them to rebuild their lives and restore their privacy and personal dignity. This is a cause very close to Devika’s heart. Growing up in Kerala (a state in India), she witnessed severe flooding every monsoon season. Some years, when the floods were particularly ruthless, close relatives and friends had their homes washed away, leaving absolutely nothing behind.

Devika noticed that forcible displacement didn’t just mean losing a home. It also meant that these families lost their jobs and education and often fell ill without access to sanitation or clean water. Devika knew she had to do something to help these families and millions of other such families grappling with the realities of forcible displacement.

This motivated her to join Nostos Homes as its Chief of Staff at its inception to help provide homes to such families across the world. Every day at Nostos, she works towards a world where everyone, even those in the most vulnerable communities, has a safe and secure home.

Devika realized that homes were important, but it wasn’t the end of these families’ worries. She was also moved by healthcare inaccessibility due to either geographical remoteness or financial barriers. This has led her to focus professionally on increasing equitable access to healthcare.

Devika has interned with the Clinton Health Access Initiative to decrease Tuberculosis drug resistance in India and with the corporate strategy team at Cipla. At the latter, she worked on identifying strategic opportunities to combat antimicrobial resistance. She has also worked with Pfizer, where she built pipelines to improve access to critical medicines and vaccines in some key markets.

Here’s what to expect during the episode:

  • What organizations or agencies are currently working to provide homes to displaced people worldwide?
  • How can individuals and communities get involved in supporting efforts to provide homes to displaced people?
  • How does providing homes to displaced people affect their long-term well-being and the surrounding community?
  • What are some of the most common natural disasters that result in people losing their homes?
  •  What impact does losing a home have on children and their families?

17 Nov 2022189: 3 Systems' Pain Points in Your Nonprofit00:30:48

My guest for this episode is Shanice Miller. Shanice is a business productivity consultant specializing in project management for nonprofit organizations, helping clients ranging from small startups to multi-million-dollar nonprofits save hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars.

Her passion for identifying and solving inefficiencies began when she sold her first business, an educational consultancy that was recognized in Forbes and BET, at a less-than-premium price point because she didn’t have systems and processes streamlined and documented. Over the last 10 years, she has used her ability to identify operational inefficiencies and create solutions to not only help save her clients’ nonprofits (and hairlines) but also to fall in love with them again.

Here’s what to expect during the episode:

  • What are the 3 common system pain points that occur in nonprofits?
  • How can you improve and develop the processes in an organization?
  • What are the benefits of process mapping?
  • Why is it essential to have a system in an organization?

23 Apr 2020060: Ways the Board Chair and CEO partner in a crisis00:14:22

This is a bonus episode--a moment with Mary.

In this episode I respond to an inquiry I received from a board chair asking what her role should be during a crisis. I had some suggestions all of which were prefaced by how important being in partnership with the CEO is for all of them. I discuss supporting the CEO in specific communications with both the staff and the board. Another key tip is to ensure the CEO takes care of herself. Stamina and resilience are so important during a crisis but require self-care to be sustained. Exploring how board members can use connections with community resources is also important.

26 May 2022169: Building a Nonprofit Through Partnerships00:37:00

My guest for this episode is Danny Mendoza. Danny is a foster youth advocate, public speaker, marketer, and founder, and CEO of the nonprofit Together We Rise (TWR). A leader in philanthropic team building and events, Danny empowers thousands of individuals, groups, and organizations to give back to their communities.

Danny founded TWR at age 19, in 2008, and they have now touched the lives of over 600k foster kids and allocated millions of dollars to better their lives. Danny founded TWR after he discovered that his 9-year-old cousin was living in his car. He started mentoring kids at a local group home, and the direction of the new nonprofit was defined by what they told him–they wanted bikes, so Danny started a Build-A-Bike program; they were being told to move all their belongings between homes in trash bags, and so Danny started TWR’s flagship Sweet Case program to provide duffels.

Today, Together We Rise is committed to helping foster kids at every stage of their foster journey. Last year alone, they helped over 130,000 foster youth and activated over 30,000 volunteers. In addition to Build-A-Bike and Sweet Cases, they partner with major organizations to offer STEM Boxes, mentoring, Disney Days, sibling reunification events, shopping sprees, and much more to enrich the lives of foster youth.

During the pandemic, they started the Rapid Response program to provide emergency support to aged-out foster youth who were at imminent risk of experiencing homelessness or food insecurity; by December of 2020, Rapid Response had distributed nearly half a million dollars across 29 different counties in California, and the program continues today.

Most recently, Danny’s #FosterLoveFriday initiative is giving away a total of $250,000 in direct cash support to foster families.

Danny’s work has been featured on the TODAY Show, Good Morning America, Forbes, and more. He has been awarded the Do Something Award, the Jefferson Award for Public Service, and most recently Together We Rise won the 2021 Foster Morey Award for Organization of the Year.

Here’s what to expect during the episode:

  • How can you help children in foster care?
  • How can a nonprofit organization help foster parents with their essential needs?
  • What do successful corporate and nonprofit partnerships look like?
  • How can you build a mutually beneficial partnership?
  • Why does building relationships meaningful in an organization?

01 Oct 2020083: Why and how you should be using your intuition00:35:13

My guest for this episode is Vaishali Nikhade. Vaishali helps entrepreneurs and small biz owners unleash their creative genius so that they can quit bleeding money and stand out from the noise & competition in their niche.

She shares this expertise to help entrepreneurs unleash their creative genius and get in touch with their intuition.

We discuss intuition including how you as a nonprofit leader should think about applying it to your decisions-making and how it comes into play in times of uncertainty.

08 Feb 2024232: Volunteer Management: What You Need to Know00:35:20

My guest for this episode is Irene Shih. For 18 years, Irene has served students in low-income communities — as a middle and high school classroom teacher in Arizona, a strategic advisor to superintendents in large urban school districts like Boston Public Schools, and a thought leader on state-level education policy in Massachusetts and Connecticut. Irene joined Minds Matter Bay Area (MMBay) as its first full-time CEO in March 2019, returning to her hometown roots in the Bay Area.

Irene is a corps member alumna of Teach For America, holds an M.P.P. in Social & Urban Policy from Harvard Kennedy School, and completed a B.A. in English Literature and Women's Studies from U.C. Berkeley. She is a member and contributing writer on the Forbes Nonprofit Council and a contributing writer for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation and Nonprofit Quarterly.

As the CEO of Minds Matter Bay Area, Irene has led the organization and its 300-student and 300-volunteer-strong community through the adversity of a global pandemic, through changing cultural attitudes about remote work and work-life balance, toward unprecedented levels of growth. Above all, Irene and her leadership team are focused on the culture and values of MMBay, fostering an educational environment that nurtures generational impact on its students by cultivating relationships between students and an ecosystem of volunteer mentors.

Here's what to expect during the episode:

  • What notable challenges has Irene faced since taking on the role of CEO, and how has she overcome or addressed them?
  • What are the three core volunteer roles in Minds Matter Bay Area (MMBay)?
  • How do leaders effectively convey gratitude and acknowledgment for the hard work and dedication of volunteers?
  • What common errors do organizations make when recruiting volunteers, and how do these mistakes impact the overall recruitment process?
  • How can leaders create a positive, engaging volunteer experience to ensure long-term commitment and satisfaction?

Well, your host, Sarah Olivieri has been likened to Vespa by one of her clients – not just because she’s charming, beautiful and brainy– but because that bold statement “I’m the money” was, as it turned out, right ON the money.

06 Feb 2020049: Using “improv” as a tool to improve working relationships00:34:56

My guest for this episode is Andrea Hummel. Andrea is trained in multicultural diversity, mediation and trauma recovery. She holds a Masters in applied anthropology American University (Washington, DC) with additional studies in refugee affairs and linguistics. Andrea holds a Theory certification in TSM psychodrama for post-traumatic growth and presents at conferences both in the US and abroad.

In 1991 she founded a consulting firm specializing in cultural diversity and human relations consulting, providing training, cultural needs assessments, and human relations consulting.  She was an adjunct faculty member at the University of Florida and Manatee Community College.

Initially Andrea's focus was on preventing conflict (via cultural understanding); now it is on resolving conflict (via improvisations).  She is the developer of the cutting-edge “i4 peacedramas” method for helping individuals, nonprofits, and communities increase empathy, decrease miscommunication,  and create alternate endings to organizational conflict.

No stranger to staying focused during crisis, she was in the Middle East during the 1990 Kuwaiti oil crisis, Guatemala during the 1995 refugee persecutions, and Greece during the 2015 refugee crisis.

Andrea and Mary discuss gaining a better understanding of organizational issues using experiential learning, not just talking about issues. We explore how to use "improv" as a tool to improve communication and working relationships.

04 Mar 2021105: Recruiting a Diverse Workforce: One Executive’s Experience00:33:11

My guest today is Daniel Hodges. Daniel is the President & Co-founder of Peaces of Me Foundation, and a JD candidate attending University of Baltimore School of Law. Previously, Daniel volunteered in various roles, including teaching at his church. He also volunteered with the National Federation of the Blind.

Daniel received his BA in educational studies from Western Governor’s University. While pursuing this degree, 2 of his 3 children underwent chemo for a rare form of eye cancer inherited from their mother. Daniel’s daughter was born needing immediate treatment for her cancer. My former wife and I spent the first several weeks of her life dealing with this while the State of Colorado formally evaluated our ability to parent - threatening loss of custody - solely based upon our blindness.

Both children turned out fine.

Most of his advocacy experience has been obtained through informal interactions; helping friends and family navigate through various hurdles. These experiences are what led him to pursue a law degree, and ultimately launch Peaces of Me.

Here’s what to expect during the episode:

  • Daniel’s process of starting his nonprofit from scratch.
  • The impact of entertaining the possibility that doing things differently could bring significant improvement.
  • Understanding that all people, regardless of disability, are human beings with varying attributes that can benefit a board.
  • Creating “universal access” is not as cumbersome as others may have thought.
  • Tips for nonprofit leaders who want to recruit staff or board members with disabilities.

~

07 Nov 2019037: Board Committees: board capacity and principles to consider00:09:12

This is one of Mary's bonus episodes. In this episode she shares some insights about how form follows function applies to how board committees are formed and how board member capacity comes into play.

Establishing strategic goals for the board and, following that, a structure – i.e., committees – to lead achievement of those goals can glaringly reveal whether or not the board really has the capacity to use that structure – in other words who is going to serve on what committee/task force.

Mary's facilitated board retreats where when they got to this point – the board members had a good idea how to organize to tackle the adopted goals but there were some committees or task forces formed and no one signed up for them.

When you’re thinking about board structure remember that it goes hand-in-hand with capacity. It’s really a capacity issue for the board.

Mary also shares 6 principles for you to consider when you are thinking about board committees.
