She talks about how the disappointment of withdrawing from the 2012 Gold Coast Marathon became a driver for her breakthrough performance at the 2013 Melbourne Marathon which in turn acted as a catalyst to qualify for the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Sarah recounts the highlights of representing Australia in the marathon at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and then following it up with the 2015 Athletics World Championships in Beijing, how much it meant to her after her progression throughout the years.

From 2016 it all changed, and it’s here where Sarah opens up about the series of events that began as a routine drug test that escalated into a two year ban from the sport, chronicling in detail the process of testing, the outcome of the test and process to appeal the decision, then having to live with the stigma and consequences of the doping ban. She explains to Brady the education and resources that elite athletes are provided in situations such as this and what needs to be improved upon. Sarah closes with the hope that the future brings and her new passion in developing an independent athlete association to work with governing bodies.

Listener Question structuring process of taper ahead of a race/time trial going into detail and Moose on the Loose is tired of shoe talk disrespecting the athletes, and goes into his favourite carbonated waters.

Craig Kirkwood, runner, coach and patron of the show sheds light on the career of running he’s had, going through the several personal bests earned from around the world and how getting the best from his own training led to his start as a junior. He recalls earning high praise from Arthur Lydiard and his experiences competing and training in the NCAA in Oklahoma before heading off to the UK where he represented New Zealand at the 1999 World Cross Country Championships in Belfast. During his time in London, Craig developed his skill as a coach and agent organising athlete training and racing including the likes of Daniel Komen, watching their workouts and observing the level of professionalism they put in. Craig goes into stepping up to the marathon, getting selected for the Manchester Commonwealth Games before a freak injury derailed him then coming home to New Zealand. He shares his insight to the domestic scene, why New Zealand distance running sets the bar really high and his earnest approach into coaching, particularly young charges such as Sam Tanner and his philosophies around training and self belief, and closing with his thoughts on how the domestic running scene will go through the short term future and current state of the sport.

Steve Jones and Sophie pick up from where they left off last week, seeking redemption after pulling out of the Chicago Marathon in 1983 by returning the next year by breaking Rob De Castella’s World Record while still working full time for the RAF and running the 10 000m in the Los Angeles Olympics along the way. Steve goes into his “recovery” after that iconic Chicago Marathon, his training philosophy at the time and partnership with coach Bob Wallace before going into the much-hyped 1985 London Marathon where he raced against Charlie Spedding and a dodgy quiche to take out the win in a course-record time. Steve and Sophie then recount the famous 1985 Chicago Marathon where Steve obliterated the field, breaking both the pacer and out of Deek’s shadow to a comprehensive victory and then witnessing Deek’s best performance at the 1986 Boston Marathon. Steve then recounts 1987 Boston Marathon where he faced off on a stacked field and the 1988 NYC Marathon where he ran 2:08:20 going into a typical training week of that era.

This great conversation concludes with his role in modern running passing on his coaching philosophy and experiences, what he would change looking back and what he’d relive.

Olli Hoare, 1500m Olympic Finalist and of Coffee Club Podcast fame chats with Brady, during his brief visit to run and win the 1500m Open Title at the 2022 Track and Field National Championships, which was easier than his previous visits home during the pandemic.

Olli recounts the tactics for his first national championships, taking in feedback after World Indoor Championships in Serbia where he finished 5th and taking the victory and enjoying a title in the 1500m. He talks about what it’s like being away from his group the On Athletic Club and managing to keep track of Australian & NCAA results.

Olli then talks about how he got into running with his background in swimming, then pursuing a pathway into University of Wisconsin and performing on the track and in the classroom having teammate Morgan McDonald as a role model.

He recounts the transition to turn pro as the pandemic unfolded the same time his time in Wisconsin finished, then joining On Athletic Club after learning how big a deal Dathan Ritzenheim is and building a brand and culture within the team. Oli talks about how that led to starting Coffee Club, putting their training and personality on display before going through his list of results, transitioning from a college athlete to a professional, and building belief and training. Oli goes into what went into his 5000m Indoor National Record, the nuances of the OAC program then into the selection process, and ultimately his experience at the Tokyo Olympics.

This chat rounds out with what Oli reckons is bad for the sport globally and within Australia, how long before he gets an American accent, which of his PBs is his favourite, and Tesla ownership.
