24 Jun 2021Dr Tom Van Eijk – 'What happened when the government regulated cosmetic injectables in Holland?' - #12701:15:04

Episode 127 hosts Dr Tom Van Eijk based in Amsterdam, Holland.

Dr Van Eijk is a globally-renowned cosmetic doctor and Holland’s most famous injector. He left surgical training in 2003 to focus on injectables and by 2005, had begun teaching students. He is especially well known for his ‘ferning’ and lip ‘tenting’ techniques which he has presented all around the world.

In many of our previous episodes we've speculated what a formal pathway in training in cosmetic injectables might look like - and so we found the only country who has done just that.

In 2019 in Holland, cosmetic injectables became recognised as a medical speciality and a training programme was created under governmental control.

Dr Van Eijk gives his unfiltered opinion on this and tells us what led to these changes. We explore whether it was necessary and assess what Australian injectors could learn from the Dutch experience.

30 Mar 2023Dr Philip Singh & Helen Planting - 'Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) & Bio-filler' #20501:25:54

Episode 205 hosts Dr Phillip Singh, a dermatologist based in Perth, Australia & Helen Planting, Clinical Development Manager for Alocuro. Alocuro are a privately-owned Australian company that supplies medical devices for use in platelet-rich plasma (PRP) procedures.

We revisit the topic of PRP having first covered it way back in episodes 19 & 20. We explore:

  • Phillip and Helen's backgrounds
  • What PRP is exactly
  • Why platelet concentration is so important
  • How PRP is harvested
  • How the Alocuro system differs to previous generations of PRP devices
  • What the proposed mechanism of action of PRP is
  • How your health and nutrition can impact the quality of PRP
  • Why injectors might have previously been underwhelmed by PRP
  • PRP for hair loss
  • What 'biofiller' is

This episode was supported by Alocuro.

31 Mar 2022Dr Cormac Convery - 'Disasters & Solutions - Chapter 1' #16401:23:40

Episode 164 hosts Dr Cormac Convery, a GP & Cosmetic Physician based in Ayrshire, Scotland.

Cormac previously sat on the expert panel for the Aesthetic Complications Expert (ACE) group and is now the Vice Chair of CMAC (Complication in Medical Aesthetics Collaborative). Dr Cormac Convery was also previously an honorary lecturer in Aesthetic Medicine at Queen Mary University, London.

In this new mini-series called ‘Disasters & Solutions’, we’ll be looking at some of the unusual, difficult or outright disasterous outcomes for patients caused by injectables.

We’ll speak to the injectors who managed a difficult case and go through what happened, step by step. We’ll learn about what might have been done to prevent the problem and what injectors can do in their own practice to be safer practitioners.

In Chapter 1, we discuss a case concerning a patient who was treated and injured by a non-medical injector with a likely imported and unregulated botulinum toxin. As the story unfolds, we learn she was one of at least nine similarly injured patients by the same injector.

20 May 2021Dr Steven Harris - 'Over-treatment, filler migration and the alienisation of faces' #12201:42:20

Episode 122 hosts Dr Steven Harris, a Cosmetic Physician based in London, UK.

Steve has an international reputation for his approach to injecting. He strongly believes in treating the face holistically by respecting the anatomy and it's proportions. This is something that he has championed for many years and continues to advocate through his social media channels and to his patients.

This episode's main theme discusses fillers and the growing phenomenon of the over-treatment of patients. We discuss how and why this is happening, who's fault it is and what the implications are.

We debate how techniques like 'tenting' that he feels may lead to the issue of filler 'migration', the truth about filler longevity and Dr Harris' approach to dealing with poor filler results - including his 'Dissolving clinic' and how he uses hyalase.

To balance the argument, we also explore what the role of the injector really is and dig deep into what their duties are - are they artists, free to express their patients choices or should they only treat people how they see fit and according to their own aesthetic principles?

We also cover

-the state of the UK injectable-market

- how championing his views on tenting and lip fillers divided the injector community

- what Dr Harris thinks of Russian lips

24 Mar 2023Melissa Isaia & Nicole Schmid-Sanele - 'The Business of Injecting (Chapter 7)' #20401:12:56

Episode 204 hosts Melissa Isaia, co-founder of Juvae and the CNA (Cosmetic Nurses Association) & Nicole Schmid, Registered Nurse, co-founder of Juvae & the CNA.

Melissa & Nicole created 'Juvae' back in 2008, an all in one solution for the training, business support and connecting of nurse injectors to clinics. At that time, the Australian injectable market was very immature. The chain clinics hadn't yet formed, social media was in it's infancy, hyalase wasn't a thing and in many ways, the aesthetic world was far simpler.

In Chapter 7 of 'The Business of Injecting' episodes, we explore:

  • Melissa and Nicole's backgrounds
  • How and why they created Juvae
  • Get insight into how Juvae assesses 'competency' amongst their injectors
  • The dilemma with new student nurses specifically training to become injectors
  • What the CNA is and why Melissa and Nicole helped found it
  • What happens behind closed doors when bodies like the CNA meet with with the regulators, AHPRA
  • The future of injecting and the how the market might evolve over the next few year in Australia

18 Apr 2024Dr Jake Sloane & David Segal - 'The latest Australian regulatory changes - where do injectors go from here?' #25001:12:13

Episode 250 showcases our hosts Dr Jake Sloane & David Segal.

Fresh from our Easter break, we first learn about Dr Jake's trips to New Zealand with Allergan, London for the ACE conference, France to visit the Allergan filler manufacturing plant and Moanco for the AMWC conference.

We then discuss our main topic and the fallout of the latest regulatory changes announced in Australia. With cosmetic clinics now banned from advertising their prices, their menu of services (that involve using medications) and before & afters photos, where exactly do injectors go from here?

Despite all the noise and pushback from the injector community, we ponder whether this is exactly what is needed. A redo, a rethink and a return to the medical model.

08 Jun 2023Dr Nichola Conlon - 'What is ageing?’ #21201:25:00

Episode 212 hosts Dr Nichola Conlon a Molecular Biologist from Newcastle, UK.

Nichola is an academic scientist with a particular interest in how and why we age. She's the founder of Nuchido, a company who's mission is to help bring affordable anti-aging strategies to the public domain.

When we started the IA podcast back in 2019, some of our older episodes covered wellness topics that looked at the relationship between looking good & feeling good. But we didn't address aging itself or the evolving field of what many now refer to as  'regenerative medicine'.

Research being conducted here is becoming more and more profound - with some scientists now confident that aging can not only be slowed but even reversed. What will come of this new emerging field we don't know yet, but it's likely to be especially relevant for aesthetic clinics who until now have only had the tools to 'camouflage' the external signs of aging.

We discuss:

  • Nichola's background and training
  • What regenerative medicine is
  • How we age and why evolution is against us
  • What happens to our DNA as the body ages
  • The role of inflammation in aging and disease
  • How to measure aging
  • What external factors affect aging
  • The evidence that aging can be slowed and even reversed
  • The role of NAD+
  • How to take NAD+ and ensure that it's bioavailable
  • The anti-aging role of other medicines including metformin
  • How to measure your biological age (and not your chronological age)
  • Biohacking your aging by modifying your lifestyle including intermittent fasting

27 Nov 2021Dr Gavin Chan & Dr Jake Sloane - 'Treatments & regions uncovered: the tear trough' #14901:33:23

Episode 149 hosts Dr Gavin Chan, a cosmetic physician based in Melbourne, Australia.

Gavin has worked in the field for over 16 years and he also hosts an extremely successful YouTube channel (under his clinics name 'Victorian Cosmetic Institute) where he explores injectables topics, controversies and more.

In this new series of episodes called 'Treatments & Regions Uncovered', we’ll be drilling down into how injectors approach specific areas of the face, what techniques they use and what they've changed over time as they mastered the technique. We’ll explore the patient perspective and get an understanding of their needs and complaints, as well as discussing any alternative treatment options that might be considered.

We also discuss the anatomy and facial ageing signs of the area to better understand what’s happening before going on a deep dive to find out:

- how our guest does it

- what products and tools they prefer and why

- what approaches they use and why

- what we can learn from their experiences and the complications that they’ve encountered

As an extra twist to these episodes, our co-hosts Dr Jake and David will take on different roles! David will act as our main host and give his own ‘patient’ perspectives whilst Dr Jake will join the week's guest as a second expert injector to share his own insights, tips and tricks.

This week we’ll be exploring the ‘tear trough and peri-ocular region', the delicate zone below the eyes and an area commonly requested by patients - but notoriously difficult to treat well.

We cover:

-what exactly is the tear trough?

-when do patients typically start noticing changes in the under eye region?

- What are the factors that cause the tear trough region to age?

- How do genetic factors influence the tear trough including skin colour, race etc

- Are there preventative measures patients can take to slow down or prevent (to a degree) hollowness in this area?

- What does a “bad” tear trough treatment look like?

- Why is this area/treatment often misdiagnosed?

- Needle vs cannula techniques

In celebration of our 150th birthday and as a nod to our listeners and their feedback, we hope the introduction of this new series gives you a deeper dive into injecting and techniques. Our aim is to provide our listeners with as much value as possible whilst constantly evolving our content as our IA community grows.

21 Jan 2021Tim Boon (Director of Total Lifestyle Credit) - 'What patient finance is, how it works and why you might choose to utilise it to fund your medical procedure' #10101:03:45

Episode 101 hosts Tim Boon, the director of Total Lifestyle Credit (TLC).

Tim has over 14 years of experience working in the patient finance world and has helped finance nearly a billion dollars worth of procedures.

Patient finance in it's simplest form involves helping patients fund their medical procedures via loans. We find out just how affordable this can be, with payments typically broken down into weekly amounts to help people budget and manage their cash flow. This allows for people to have life changing surgeries (both cosmetic and medical) whereas in the past these may well have been cost prohibitive.

We learn about what protections are in place for customers and how TLC acts as a middle man between the surgeon and the patient when it comes to the financial arrangements.

We also discuss how clinics can access finance to refurbish or perhaps upgrade their lasers or devices, traditionally an extremely expensive and prohibitive barrier to most clinic owners.

11 Mar 2021Kian Moini - 'The business of aesthetics & a new startup company to help clinics and injectors connect' #11201:22:03

Episode 112 hosts Kian Moini, a new entrepreneur in the Australian aesthetic space and the founder of a start up business called ‘Cosmetic Recruitment’. Kian is the son of Babak Moini, the founder of Laser Clinics Australia and follows in his fathers footsteps in aiming to modernise and improve the Australian injectable industry.

Kian went straight into the corporate world from high school, getting an invaluable grounding in the workings of private equity, mergers & acquisitions, business strategy and management consultancy.

We get an insight into the current state of the business side of cosmetic clinics. We first discuss Kian's unique background and education in the cosmetic landscape and how it has evolved - starting with his father's own creation 'Laser Clinics Australia'.

We look at the projected growth of the industry and break down some financial jargon to explain the trends and consequences for clinics to become acquired either through private equity or be listed publicly.

Lastly we explore Kian's new start up company, 'Cosmetic Recruitment' that aims to solve the age old problem of clinics not having the right injector when they need them. Cosmetic Recruitment connects clinics with skilled injectors on a short or longer-term basis on an agreed commission structure.

- Injectables in non-medical clinics, is appropriate?

- Teleconsulting and remote prescribing for nurse injectors

04 Mar 2021Dr Lee Walker - 'The evidence for how and why we inject?' #11101:50:50

Episode 111 hosts Dr Lee Walker, a world-renowned cosmetic injector from Liverpool in the UK. Dr Walker previously worked as a Dental Surgeon before dedicating his time to facial aesthetics. He is a hugely respected global key opinion leader for Teoxane and has taught in over 30 countries.

In this role, Dr Walker heads and helps design the Teoxane educational programme in addition to mentoring injectors in several key markets. Dr Walker is best known for his easy to understand approach to cosmetic education and his knowledge of facial anatomy.

We discuss a wide range of topics concerning the evidence (or lack of) for how we as injectors practice. We start with one of the key issues surrounding the specialty, namely who exactly should be allowed to inject and how should injectors train to demonstrate a level of competence?

We then tackle some of the myths, dogma and assumptions of the injectable world including:

- Was there really a global toxin-failure phenomenon post-lockdown?

- One of the biggest controversies in injectables, the concept of 'aspiration'. Is it a useful test and if not, what should we be doing?

- Are cannulas really safer than needles? What does 'safe' even mean?

- Facial swelling post-COVID 19 vaccinations. Is this a new worrying concern or simply media-hype and a known issue?

-Filler associated blindness and what should we do about it?

- And much more!

  • How Threads is so similar to Twitter - but why it also has a massive advantage

  • How a text-based app feels different compared to visual mediums like Instagram
  • Whether this can lead to more authenticity and a better connection with your followers
  • Why you shouldn't replicate your other social media content on Threads

Episode 114 sees the return of Ruanne Brell, a senior medico-legal solicitor at Avant (Australia's largest medical indemnity company).

In her previous two podcasts (Episodes 51 and 66) we focused on the patient and the medical professionals perspectives. We covered how cosmetic consultations should be approached and more importantly, what to do when things don't go as planned.

In today's episode we focus specifically on the legal implications of advertising cosmetic and injectable treatments in Australia. In an age where social media forms the bulk of many clinics marketing, we assess how this should be carried out in a compliant way and how to avoid being reported or penalised.

26 Oct 2023Dr Pouria Moradi - 'Normal: A Plastic Surgeon's letter to his daughters about body image' #23201:21:24

Episode 232 hosts Dr Pouria Moradi, a Plastic Surgeon & Reconstructive Surgeon from Sydney, Australia.

Pouria recently published his first book entitled 'Normal - A Plastic Surgeon's letter to his daughter about body image'. He first got the idea for the book as he watched his seven year old daughter participating in a swimming carnival. She seemed so proud of herself and completely unaware of how she looked in her cute swimming costume.

But it dawned on him juggling his role as a father and Plastic Surgeon - how long would this innocence would last? Might she soon start asking questions about her body? And if so, what should a father who offers cosmetic surgery every day to other women say?

This is a deep conversation about body image, parenting, ethics and ultimately, we try to understand what is 'normal'?

Episode 201 hosts Dr Patricia Barerra, a cosmetic physican based in the city of Paraná, Argentina.

Patricia joins us in the 12th Chapter of our series called 'The Injector Diaries'. These episodes feature in depth conversations, stories and experiences from injectors around the globe.

Each injector brings their own unique take on things and we'll showcase every level of type of injector, from newbies to masters. We'll explore how and why they chose to inject, why they favour using certain products, look under the hoods of their clinics and aim to inspire our injector listeners.

Patricia went to medical school in the USA before moving back to Argentina to work as a junior doctor in hospital. After one year of surgical training, Patricia discovered her passion for aesthetic medicine and has worked as a cosmetic physician ever since.

This episode was completely unscripted and we thank Patricia again for her time and insights. Due to a planned guest being ill, Patricia very kindly stepped in at the very last minute and shared an amazing view into her country and an aesthetic market that we haven't covered yet on IA.

We explore:

  • Her background into aesthetics
  • The region where she lives in Argentina, the people who live there
  •  How the lack of ethnic diversity in Argentina has become a national debate
  • Who can inject in Argentina
  • Whether being a doctor or a dentist is enough skill to begin injecting
  • Whether aesthetics is regulated better in Argentina than other countries
  • What products are available
  • How she upskilled and became more confident in managing complications
  • Her experience of attending the CMAC conference in the UK
  • Her views on using ultrasound in aesthetics
  • How to justify and say no to a patient
  • Her business plans for opening a new clinic

We also ask every injector in these episodes:

  • What is your number one toxin and why?
  • What is your number one filler and why?
  • What is your go to cannula make/size and why?
  • Aspiration - yes or no?
  • What’s been the best book or course that has improved your practice the most?

11 Apr 2025Dr Jake Sloane & David Segal - 'What's trending in Aesthetics? (Chapter 11 - Part 1)' #29701:09:50

Episode 297 showcases our hosts Dr Jake Sloane & David Segal

With political issues and the economic climate changing almost every day, we're publishing this episode out of sync with our usual Friday podcast. What we recorded just 4 weeks ago dated quite a lot and so we decided to record a second part to this episode to also address the tariff situation, the stock market volatility and what these mean for aesthetic clinics.

In Chapter 11 (Part 1) of 'What's Trending in Aesthetics,' we reflect on the introduction of another new toxin into the Australian market. We first tackle how clinics will need to understand both the clinical but also financial implications of this. We discuss the challenges of introducing new products into your business, particularly focusing on toxins and fillers.

We highlight the vital importance of:

  • Critical analysis when it comes to understanding clinical studies
  • Transparent communication with patients if you change their usual product to something else
  • Pricing strategies
  • Understanding the nuances of different toxin and filler products.

We also touch on the importance of clinical photography, scheduling routine reviews of patients, the potential pitfalls of packaging treatments and the perception of 'top-ups.'

We conclude with practical advice on balancing margins and cash flow when making business decisions when it come to purchasing and pricing products.

10 May 2023Babak Moini- 'An assessment of the Australian chain clinics' #20701:24:07

Episode 207 hosts Babak Moini, the founder of Laser Clinics Australia (LCA).

LCA started in 2008 and have become the world's largest aesthetic and skin chain of clinics with over 200 locations in Australia, Singapore, UK and Canada.
