29 Nov 2020Ep 26 -  How to be a Social Leader with Damian Corbet00:46:22

In this week’s episode of the Influence & Impact podcast for female leaders I am talking to Damian Corbet, author of The Social CEO about how social media can make you a stronger leader.

We cover what it means to be a Social Leader, why as leaders we should be engaging in social media and how we can avoid some of the pitfalls.  We talk about having an authentic and credible voice online and reflect on this new era of transparent and open leadership.  We also explore how you can build your personal brand and grow your network of connections using social media.

This conversation really opened my eyes to the potential of social media for leadership and career development and I think you’ll find it relevant whatever level of leadership you’re at now.

About my guest: Damian Corbet is a social media strategist, consultant, and writer with over 20 years’ experience in public relations and communications. He founded The Social C-Suite to help senior leaders get the most from social media and thrive in the social age. Damian regularly speaks at conferences and leadership events about social leadership and has also co-organized and presented at workshops for C-level leaders. He also regularly interviews CEOs for his blog, and his new book, The Social CEO, was published by Bloomsbury in 2019.

To find out more about Damian you can connect with him on Linkedin, read his blog or follow him at @damiancorbet on twitter.

If you haven’t done so already, please leave a review and thanks for your support of this show!

One of the most powerful ways to live a happier life is learning how to be kinder to yourself and love yourself more.

As women, we often struggle with accepting ourselves and being confident and secure in who we are. Being kinder to yourself not only makes your relationship with yourself a better one, it also improves how you show up as a leader.

In this episode I discuss:

  • Why accepting and loving yourself is essential for your happiness
  • How I’ve learnt to be kinder to myself and how I practice it
  • Eight ways you can be kinder to yourself today

After listening to this episode, I’d love for you to ask yourself this – What's one way I can love myself more today?

Head over to my socials and share with your answer with me!

02 Dec 2024Ep 176 – What to do when you care too much as a leader00:20:52

This episode was prompted by a request from one of the members of my Women Leading community who asked how she could build more personal resilience around the impact of decisions she was making at work and be a little more “Teflon coated”.

Perhaps you relate you need to make tough decisions as a leader but you take things to heart, you care about people and their wellbeing and sometimes the decisions you make can have significant impact on others.

Or perhaps you are the person who is implementing the decisions that others have made and cascading unwelcome news or making unpopular changes.  You may be involved in a restructure for example or taking a team member through performance management.

Now, I didn’t want to call this ‘how to care less as a leader’ because I don’t think that those of us who care a lot would embrace the idea of caring less.  Caring, having empathy, being conscious of the impact of our decisions on people - these are all wonderful traits for a leader to have and may well be a huge strength of yours as a leader.

However, if caring has no boundaries around it then you could be heading towards sleepless nights, self-doubt and possibly even burnout.

In this episode I’m going to explore 3 insights and 3 tools and techniques to help you if you are someone who cares too much as a leader.

My name’s Carla Miller, leadership coach, author and trainer. And this is the Influence & Impact podcast for women leaders, helping you confidently navigate the ups and downs of leadership and feel less alone on your journey as a leader.  In fortnightly episodes I share practical tools and insights from myself and my brilliant guests that will help you succeed in your career.

If you struggle to say ‘no’ then this free 5 day challenge is for you.  You’ll receive a short email each day containing a short video taking you through the 5 steps of my How To Say No framework. We’ll get you happily saying no in just 5 days!

Join the May cohort of Influence & Impact to learn how to tackle self-doubt, increase your impact and become brilliant at influencing.  It’s a small cohort working closely with me and includes 6 workshops and 2 peer coaching sessions.

21 Nov 2021Why we're not aiming for work-life balance with Jessica Chivers - Ep 7300:52:08

Many of us will take extended leave during our careers. It could be maternity or shared parental leave, sickness or sabbatical, family caregiving or just a much-needed career break.

Unfortunately, the reality is that extended leave can result in feelings of isolation, being left behind, starting again on the back foot or having to downgrade our careers.

Jessica Chivers, coaching psychologist and founder of The Talent Keeper Specialists, wants to make sure everyone feels connected, cared for and confident during extended leave and the transition back to work.

In this episode we discussed:

  • The positives and benefits of taking extended leave and feeling confident about it
  • Why we don’t like the terms work-life balance and imposter syndrome
  • Creating your ideal work life blend when you transition back to work
  • How to negotiate sharing the load within your household so you can be your best at work
  • Focusing on output, flexibility and managing energy rather than contracted hours

01 Aug 2021Ep 58 - The Challenges we Face as Women in the Workplace00:42:31

As a coach for women leaders, I focus on how as women we can take control of our careers.

But I’ve never addressed on the podcast why we even need women’s leadership coaches and women’s leadership programmes.

The playing field that women operate on in the workplace is shockingly unlevel. It’s time to acknowledge that and collectively take steps to change it.

I discuss:

  • The dynamics of the current working environment and how it wasn’t designed with women in mind
  • The true extent of the disadvantages we face from pay to promotions to behaviour
  • What sponsorship is and how women can proactively support each other
  • Ways we can improve the working environment, embrace our personal strengths and step into the space we deserve

02 Jul 2023Ep 139 - How to be more inclusive with Catherine Garrod00:40:58

We all want to be inclusive but we don’t always know exactly how to embed that into our teams and our everyday activities.  My guest Catherine Garrod tackles exactly that in her book ‘Conscious Inclusion: How to ‘do’ EDI one decision at time’ and in this episode we discuss some really practical ways to be more inclusive.

You’ll learn:

  • -        How you can encourage respectful disagreement (and why you’ll want to)
  • -        A great model for gathering feedback in a meeting
  • -        How building in inclusion reminders will help you get better at your job
  • -        How important it is to ‘resize’ a role for part time work and the best way to approach that

About Catherine:

Catherine Garrod is the founder of Compelling Culture and works with organisations to determine whether people from underrepresented groups are having the same good experience as people from overrepresented groups. Then she defines specific actions to boost the experience for colleagues, customers and communities.  And she lives by this quote “Unless you’re consciously including people, you’re almost certainly unconsciously excluding people.”

Previously, Catherine led Sky to become the Most Inclusive Employer in the UK, with 80% of teams increasing their diversity. Now as a consultant she combines the power of listening, employee engagement, diversity and inclusion, to make the complex simple - by absorbing an organisation's purpose and providing practical actions that can be implemented today, tomorrow and the day after.

Catherine is straight talking, full of energy and she empowers people to create sustainable change. When every voice is heard, every person is empowered and everybody takes action, the outcomes are extraordinary.

17 Jan 2021Ep 31 How To Have More Gravitas00:27:43

This week’s episode of the Influence & Impact podcast for female leaders is all about gravitas.  What is it?  What do we need it for?  And how do we have gravitas when we need it most?

Gravitas used to be a requirement for leadership, back in the days when leadership was about telling others what to do.  It is defined as dignity, seriousness or being solemn of manner.  Leadership has evolved since then and women no longer need to act like old men in grey suits to be taken seriously as leaders.  However there are times when we have to deliver serious news or address a room full of people who intimidate us and gravitas helps with that.  In this episode I’m sharing some tools you can use in those situations.

I’ve got a FREE masterclass for female leaders coming up later in January – How To Be An Influential Leader without letting self-doubt hold you back.  Visit my website at https://www.carlamillertraining.com

31 Jul 2022Ep 105 - Prioritising Wellbeing in the Workplace with Claire Warner00:44:53

We discuss:

13 Mar 2022Ep 87 - Having the Career Conversation with your Line Manager00:39:05

We’re continuing our career month on the podcast! In this episode, I’m sharing my tips on how to speak to your line manager about your career progression within your organisation and asking for investment in your training and development.

This is an important topic for women in leadership as research tells us that women do not get promoted as often or as quickly as men do and many of us avoid having career conversations with our managers.

Listen for:

  • How gender bias is probably holding you back in your career
  • How to prepare for a career conversation with your manager
  • Confidently talking to your manager about your aspirations
  • How to ask your organisation to invest in your development

I want this to episode to encourage you to feel empowered to ask for what you want in a way that gives you the best chance of success.

25 Jun 2023Ep 138 - A simple shift that makes it easier to navigate internal politics00:24:17

I remember a period of time when I felt a lot of frustration at work.  Frustrated with decisions being made, with an obstructive colleague I had to work with and with my inability to influence change.  It turns out I was not alone.  A recent report from Gallup shared that 19% of Brits feel angry frequently at work and 38% report feeling stressed a lot of the time.

In this week’s episode I share one simple shift I made that makes it easier to navigate internal politics.

So if you’d like to become a better leader and get people to listen to you then have a listen to this short solo episode.

04 Apr 2021Ep 42 Are you running on autopilot?00:32:07

I’ve been running on autopilot lately, head down constantly focusing on the next task.  So I’ve taken a few days out at the end of my financial year to stop and do some reflection and I found it really powerful.  So in this episode of the Influence & Impact podcast I thought I’d share some of the powerful questions I use to reflect and course correct when I’ve been running on autopilot.

We’ll be exploring what success actually means to us, uncovering what’s driving our behaviour and how we can wake up to and enjoy the moment more.

The Meaning of Success

"To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world a little better; whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is the meaning of success."

16 May 2021Ep 48 - Mental Health First Aid00:53:22

Everyone has mental health but not everyone feels comfortable talking about it, especially in the workplace. Danielle Bridge, founder and CEO of ABC Life Support CIC, is opening up the conversation on this week’s podcast.

We discussed:

What mental health first aid is and why it’s important

Practical ways leaders can recognise and support mental health in the workplace

How leaders can set boundaries when supporting their teams

The rise of burnout and its impact on mental health

How you can get help if you’re struggling mentally and emotionally

Although many workplaces have programmes in place to support the health of their employees, they aren’t being used by many and there’s still a stigma attached to mental health issues. In fact, 90% of people who are off of work for mental health challenges cite a different reason.

After listening to this episode, I encourage you to look at what support is available in your organisation and open up the conversation with your team.

Take a few of Danielle’s ideas for supporting others and creating a safe space for mental health in your workplace.

If you’re struggling with your mental health right now, please know that there’s help available.

15 Jan 2019How to avoid micromanaging 00:10:54
In this episode we talk about how to judge the level of support your team members and how to avoid accidentally micromanaging them or giving them too much freedom.
15 Jul 2024Ep 166 – Are you overcommitting?00:27:04

Do you find yourself overpromising and creating unnecessary stress for yourself?  Or putting in lots more effort than anyone expects, or needs you to? How about saying yes when you’ve got no capacity to get more work done or jumping into help when no-one has asked you to?

If any of those resonate it sounds like you may be overcommitting - constantly trying to show how much value you add, by going above and beyond when it isn’t needed.

In this episode I’m going to

  • break down the ways we overcommit

  • explain why we overcommit

  • share the questions you can ask to help you dial back the overcommitting (and still do a great job!)

I also share a brilliant new free resource I’ve created for you – the How To Say No Challenge which you can sign up to at carlamillertraining.com/sayno

This is the first in a series of 3 podcasts this summer around mindset and setting boundaries and you can expect an episode on people pleasing and another one on worrying too much what people think of you.  I’ve also recorded some great guest interviews such as exclusive presence and managing the menopause which we’ll be releasing in the coming months.

My name’s Carla Miller, leadership coach, author, trainer and founder of Women Leading, the community that helps women lead without overwhelm.  I’m on a mission to empower women leaders in the workplace and make leading less lonely.

04 Dec 2018Do you feel like an imposter? A pathway to self-confidence with Fiona Buckland00:28:56

If you believe that luck rather than ability lies behind your success, then you might be suffering from "Imposter Syndrome" a corrosive form of self-esteem that can affect you as a leader. 19 Feb 2023Ep 128 – Why women are not getting the feedback they need to succeed00:34:47

Gender bias in workplace feedback is a pervasive and often overlooked issue, with many women in the workplace receiving feedback that can hinder their professional development and advancement.

Recent studies have found that negative personality-based reviews are up to 76% more likely to occur in women's reviews, compared to only 2% in men's reviews.

In addition, men are more likely to receive actionable feedback that prepares them for leadership roles, while women tend to receive feedback that is more general and non-actionable. It is no wonder that many women struggle with confidence in the workplace due to the feedback they are receiving.

In this episode, l explored the differences between the feedback that men and women receive and the impact of that on their career development. I also covered the practical steps that can be taken to address these gender biases in the workplace and help women to succeed.

“It is the responsibility of each one of us to learn and understand how people have different experiences in their lives”

In this week’s episode, I interview Tala Hassoun - an international development and humanitarian expert, and gender, diversity and inclusion lead facilitator.

15 May 2022Ep 94 - What I wish every woman knew00:24:46

In this episode, I’m talking about some impactful things that I wish every woman knew. If I had known these a long time ago, my leadership journey would have been easier.

As you listen, I encourage you to reflect on my words for your own life. I hope they make a transformational difference for you.

To help, I’ve noted down the key points for you to come back to or write down for yourself.

  1. You are not broken.
  2. Bias is real and it creates imposter feelings.
  3. It’s normal to have imposter feelings and a vocal inner critic.
  4. You are enough exactly as you are

22 Apr 2024Ep 160 – The secret to building a happy team with Richard Clarke00:37:16

As leaders we’d all like to have happy teams but how do we create the right environment to achieve that?  I interview Richard Clarke, creator of the popular Happy Teams substack newsletter, about his experience building a company centred on team happiness and the work he does helping companies create happier teams.

We discuss…

  • What makes people happy at work
  • The 5 factors that influence team happiness
  • Who is responsible for your team’s happiness

Richard Clarke is the founder and ex-CEO of Secret Source, an IT company based in Spain. In 2014 he had a theory, if he set up a company whose main KPIs were team and client happiness then the team would collaborate better, be more aligned with their clients and perform better and all the traditional measures of success, profit, revenue, growth would naturally follow. For 10 years Richard studied the science of happiness in the workplace and applied it in his company. In 2022, with almost 50 employees Richard handed over the role of CEO and he now dedicates his life to sharing his knowledge. He writes, speaks and teaches leaders and organisations how to use the science of happiness and wellbeing to build better teams.

09 May 2021Ep 47 – Fertility and the Workplace01:11:14

This week on the podcast I interview Cat Strawbridge, a fertility advocate and host of the Finally Pregnant Podcast, and Frankie Hockham, Fertility Network UK volunteer on infertility, pregnancy loss and childlessness.

Infertility is a disease that affects 1 in 6 couples, the majority of whom are in the workforce, however it is not an issue that is talked about or well supported in organisations in the UK.

We discussed:

Our personal experiences with fertility treatments, loss and pregnancy while working

How you can communicate your fertility situation to your manager or employer

What you can do to get the support you need from your organisation

Practical ways leaders can proactively support team members or colleagues having fertility treatments or dealing with infertility

I hope this episode shines a light on the effect infertility and fertility treatments has on individuals in the workplace, gives both those affected and those supporting helpful tips and encourages you to take action to improve fertility policies in your organisation.

If you would like support with infertility, fertility treatments, loss or childlessness, please reach out to The Fertility Network UK and use the resources they provide on their website: https://fertilitynetworkuk.org/

If you’d like to know more about fertility in the workplace, visit: https://fertilitynetworkuk.org/trying-to-conceive/fertility-at-work/

MORE ABOUT CAT

Finally Pregnant Podcast host, community leader and fertility advocate Cat Strawbridge is a fertility patient who has experienced multiple rounds of fertility treatment and sadly pregnancy loss. Cat now supports the trying to conceive (TTC) community and those who are finally pregnant and parenting after infertility and loss. Cat has worked with corporates to embed fertility policies, education and training to staff and managers and supports to all those affected by infertility and loss.

MORE ABOUT FRANKIE

Like so many, Frankie has been affected and impacted by infertility and pregnancy loss. Throughout her fertility journey, she was struck by how isolating the experience can be and how unprepared they were for what was to come due to lack of support and information. On sharing her story, several our friends, colleagues and even family came forward to talk about their secret struggles with fertility.

Because of this, Frankie became a volunteer for the Fertility Network UK and now speaks publicly to raise awareness of infertility, pregnancy loss and childlessness. Frankie wants to help ensure others realise that they’re not alone.

11 Jul 2021Ep 56 - How to Stop Overthinking00:55:18

Are you an overthinker? Perhaps you ruminate on past situations, worry about future events or are fearful of the judgement of others?

Overthinking can affect both our work and personal lives as well as how we show up with confidence as a leader. Our thoughts also directly impact the levels of daily stress we experience and how quickly we can recover from it.

In reality, our minds are natural overthinkers if we let them be. Tahirih McLaren-Brown is helping people to take control and be the boss of their brain through mindfulness and meditation.

We discussed:

  • What mindfulness is and how it can benefit you
  • How you can have more awareness and control of your thoughts and emotions
  • What you can do if you’re feeling worried or anxious about returning to the office
  • Ways you can handle uncertainty and even embrace it
  • A quick mindfulness exercise you can do anywhere to instantly ease your stress

If you’d like to learn the Four Step Pause that Tahirih shared and get access to seven days of guided meditations for overthinkers, you can find those at her website: https://www.tahirih.co/f/mindfulness-kit

28 Mar 2021Ep 41 What I wish I’d know about managing00:38:02

20 years ago I took on my first management role.  It was much more of a personal development journey than I ever imagined it would be because it triggered all of my doubts about myself, all my unhelpful stories and it highlighted how much I didn’t know.  I wished that management and my team members came with a manual I could read so I could do it right without risking making any mistakes.

In this episode I’m sharing the things I wish my 26 year old self had known about managing.  These are the things that would have made my life much easier and happier!  I hope they help you if you’re at the start of your management and leadership journey.

22 Jan 2023Ep 126 – 7 Things Confident Women Do00:33:33

We want to be more confident as women in the workplace yet it can be challenging, especially when we face gender bias on a daily basis.  Increasing your confidence is easier than you think and in this episode I share 7 things confident women do – and some of them might surprise you!

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • Confidence and competence are often confused in the workplace which is why we are at a disadvantage if we are not confident
  • The experience of gender bias causes women to doubt themselves in the workplace
  • Confidence isn’t about becoming someone who never doubts themselves – self-doubt is a totally normal part of the human experience
  • You don’t have to have all the answers to be confident
  • Confident women support and encourage others and can also own their own strengths and achievements
  • Confident women can have the courageous conversations, set boundaries and say no
  • Confident women speak up when their Inner Critic is very vocal
  • Confidence involves trusting your own judgement
  • Confident women like and love themselves

If this sounds good but you want the support, tools and strategies to put it into action then the Be Bolder course is perfect for you.

BE BOLDER – JOIN US IN MARCH

Many managers and leaders that I work with mention anxiety as one of the things they struggle with, both personally and in the workplace.

19 Aug 2023Ep 142 - Increasing your gravitas00:32:32

11 Dec 2023Ep 150 - Gendered Ageism at Work: We Need to Start a Revolution with Dr. Lucy Ryan00:47:22

Is midlife making you wonder what to do next or are you suffering from ageism at work? Listen to this captivating conversation with me and Dr Lucy Ryan, inspired by her book "Revolting Women, Why Midlife Women Are Walking Out." We delve deep into the impact of gendered ageism, the many challenges faced by midlife women, and why many are leaving the workforce.

In our conversation, we cover:

The challenges faced by midlife women, including the collision of events such as menopause, parental care, and financial pressures. We also discuss the gender bias in caregiving and the impact on women's careers, with many struggling to return to the workforce.

We discuss the need for a revolution in how midlife women are supported, emphasising the importance of transitioning from full-time to part-time work and redefining the narratives that often surround middle-aged women.

We also stress the need for organisations to integrate age into diversity agendas, track data, conduct listening exercises, and promote part-time and job share options.

About Dr Lucy Ryan:

Dr. Lucy Ryan is a leadership coach, trainer, and researcher who focuses on midlife women and their decision-making process as they move into positions of power. After observing many women making unexpected career choices just as they were on the brink of stepping up, Dr. Ryan realised there was little research on the subject and decided to pursue a PhD to investigate further. Despite leaving school with no qualifications, she self-educated herself from the age of 40 onwards, eventually becoming an expert in her field. Dr. Ryan is passionate about understanding the phenomenon and helping women navigate their careers with confidence and purpose.

17 Apr 2022Ep 92 - Let's Talk About Confidence00:40:21

Confidence at work is something many women struggle with. I believe that a lack of confidence is having a very tangible impact on women and that their talent is being overlooked and underappreciated because of it. I also think gender bias causes many of our confidence issues.

In this week’s episode, I share the personal insights of my Be Bolder clients on how confidence affects them at work and how you can support women in your team who struggle with confidence.

Listen for:

  • The different ways lack of confidence can show up at work
  • How more confidence creates tangible benefits for individuals and their organisations
  • Ways that you can build your confidence at work
  • What leaders can do to support, encourage and empower the women around them

If you are struggling with confidence, know that you're not alone and there is nothing wrong with you. With support, you can feel more confident and assertive at work.

You can listen to the intersectionality episode I mention with Tala Hassoun here: https://carla-miller.mykajabi.com/blog/ep-80-what-every-leader-needs-to-know-about-intersectionality-with-tala-hassoun

06 Jun 2021Ep 51 – Are we addicted to productivity?00:21:07

The way work is designed doesn’t work for so many of us for so many reasons. I believe that the value we place on productivity and ticking off the to do list is resulting in overwork, burnout and ineffective leaders.

In this week’s episode, I’m sharing why I think it’s time that leaders take a step back, question the structure of their work and focus on what really makes an impact in their role.

I’ve combined this one of my podcast episodes from 2019 – Hard work is not the answer.

I speak about:

The culture of productivity and why we should reimagine the way we work

How you can challenge a common leadership belief held by many

Why thinking, feeling and acting like a leader is more important than your to do list

Practical steps for prioritising your own development as a leader

Over investing in your role, working overtime and pushing yourself towards burnout isn’t healthy for you or your team.

If you're working really hard and still not getting the results that you want then this episode is your encouragement to pause, rethink and make changes.

In next week’s episode I’ll be extending on this theme and speaking about leadership burnout, what the signs are and how to prevent it. Look out for that on Monday 14 June.

19 Mar 2023Ep 131 - The Brutal Impact of Parenthood on Women’s Careers with Jess Heagren00:44:58

When I read the Careers After Babies report I knew we had to talk about it on the podcast.  The stories and statistics within it show the stark reality of how many women’s careers are impacted by motherhood.  It’s a must read for anyone in the workplace who has children, wants to have children or wants to be a leader or employer that supports working parents.

I’m joined by guest Jess Heagren, author of the Careers After Babies report to discuss its findings and what we can do to improve this situation.  We talk about how equal parenting and shared parental leave make a huge difference, why we see a drop in women at management level after parenthood and how long it takes careers to recover after having a child.

MORE ABOUT JESS

Jess Heagren is an ex Financial Services Director, mother of four, award-winning CEO of That Works For Me, and author of landmark report Careers After Babies. On a personal mission to keep more parents in the workplace, Jess works with businesses to make them better employers for parents through the Careers After Babies accreditation programme and supports hiring through That Works For Me, home to thousands of parents seeking flexible work.

29% of working age people in the UK have a chronic illness and yet it is something that is rarely discussed or recognised within many workplaces.  In this week’s episode, I speak to Rebecca Kudyk who openly shares her personal experience with chronic illness and how she manages motherhood, a career in financial services and her unpredictable symptoms and pain.

Rebecca shares helpful and practical advice for managers and workplaces on how they can support a team member with a chronic illness or disability. We also talk about grief, mental health and all the strengths that an employee with chronic illness can bring to the organisation.

At 25, thanks to private healthcare at work, Rebecca was diagnosed with severe osteoarthritis in her knees. Since then, she has had 8 operations on her knees as well as my jaw. It is the physical trauma of the operations that doctors believe to be the cause of her fibromyalgia.

08 Nov 2021Ep 71 - How to Gain Respect as a Leader00:33:05

One of most asked questions I get from women in leadership is how to feel more respected as a leader. I love this question because it’s at the heart of what my work is all about.

That's why I developed the Influence & Impact framework and it's why I built the Influence and Impact group coaching programme.

Essentially, being a respected leader comes down to is respecting yourself, respecting others and gaining the respect of others.

01 Nov 2020Creating Time in Your Week to Think00:20:12

We are working at a time when we are constantly bombarded with things that need our attention.  Countless emails arriving in our inbox before we’ve had time to deal with yesterday’s emails, in back to back meetings all day barely stopping to grab some lunch, calls from senior colleagues with another new task or project for our to do lists.

So, we get through it by diligently ticking things off our to do list and hoping that by the end of the week that to do list is a bit smaller (spoiler alert: it never is).

Sound familiar?

In this episode I’m going to share how you can step out of that busy trance you’ve been stuck in for so long and create the time you need to think about the important things.

If you enjoy this episode and it inspired you in some way, I'd love to hear about it and know your biggest takeaway.  Take a screenshot of you listening on your device, post it to Instagram and tag me @thisiscarlamiller

If you haven’t done so already, please leave me a review and thanks for your support of this show!

14 May 2023Ep 135 - The confidence crisis impacting girls with Laura Sercombe00:46:51

I spend a lot of time coaching women around confidence, giving them tools to build their confidence and shining a light on the role gender bias plays in making us doubt ourselves.  But confidence issues often start a long time before women enter the workplace and the pressure that girls face today thanks to social media is huge.

In this episode I interview Laura Sercombe, the inspiring CEO of GFS (Girl’s Friendly Society), a charity that works with girls to inspire and empower them to live their best lives.  This year my business has been making a donation to fund a girl to attend one of GFS’s confidence building sessions for every participant in our open Be Bolder courses, so it was great to explore this topic with Laura.

We talked about why there is a need for the work GFS does, what’s causing girls as young as 6 to struggle with their confidence and the importance of positive role models and safe spaces where girls can be themselves.

Laura’s Bio:

For almost 30 years I have worked as part of the third sector in service delivery charities with a focus around challenging injustice – around education, disability and gender. I am driven by a desire to see more equity in the world and so it will be no surprise that I have a real interest in addressing EDI in the roles I have been fortunate to work in.

I am lucky enough to work in an environment I really enjoy; as CEO for GFS (Girls Friendly Society), a children’s charity with a mission to support girls to be proud of who they are. This is because girls as young as six tell us this is something they cannot do. Our hope is that this works contribute to the movement to address gender inequity for girls and young women.

At GFS, we work with girls across England and Wales in areas where research says they do not have the same life opportunities as their peers – to inspire and empower them to live their best lives.

GFS is an exciting charity that we are proud to be caretakers of. The history is extraordinary as GFS is one of the longest running charities in England and Wales, devoted solely to meeting the needs for girls and young women. We have a real focus on developing partnerships with organisations that are keen to be involved and support this objective.

From an early age, girls are well aware of the far reaching gender inequalities that exist for them. We are focused on building a fair society one girl at a time by inspiring the girls to think beyond their own experience and empowering them to have the confidence to live the life they want to. This takes hard work and dedication by the volunteers who deliver sessions each week for the girls.

03 Sep 2023Ep 143 How to challenge Upwards without damaging your career00:26:48

There are these unspoken rules about the world of work that most of us buy into without questioning.  One of those rules is that we don’t say no to our line manager or disagree with senior stakeholders.  As a result, people end up frustrated, overworked, and demotivated because they’ve never learnt how to challenge the thinking of senior stakeholders without challenging their authority.  They’ve never learnt how to speak truth to power.

In this episode of the Influence & Impact for Female Leaders podcast I will be sharing 9 practical strategies to help you to disagree with someone in authority without negatively impacting your career or your relationship.  Whether you are dealing with your line manager, senior management team or your board you will find practical insights you can use to learn how to challenge in a constructive and career building way.

12 Feb 2024Ep 155 – How to Support a Team Member Who Lacks Confidence00:16:29

If you’ve got a team member who lacks confidence it could be impacting their performance, their career progression and how they feel about work.

Confidence issues are widespread with 79% of women saying they lack confidence at work.  And it impacts people’s ability to perform and progress. 46% of women say managing a negative mindset stops them from making the impact they want at work whilst 37% of women identified a lack of confidence and self-belief in their own ability as an obstacle to career progression

So how do you help people in your team build their confidence and unlock their potential?

In this episode, I’m going to share 6 practical ways you can help a team member feel more confident in their role, as well as 3 traps to avoid to make sure you’re not labelling someone as unconfident when that may not be the issue.

We’ll look at…

  • How the type of feedback you give makes a real difference

  • How you might be impacting the confidence of your team

  • How you can use coaching questions to support their self-awareness and self-belief

  • Ways to make them feel valued

  • How modelling and encouraging a growth mindset can help

This is the Influence & Impact podcast for women leaders, helping you confidently navigate the ups and downs of leadership and feel less alone on your journey as a leader.

My name’s Carla Miller, I’ve been coaching leaders for the past 15 years and I’m your leadership coach.  I’m here to remind you of the value to bring to your organisation, to help believe in yourself and to share practical tools and insights from myself and my brilliant guests that will help you succeed in your career.

04 Dec 2022Ep 121 - Do you worry that you don't know enough?00:26:16

Do you feel like your ability to do a good job depends on how much experience or how many skills or qualifications you have? And you never feel like you have enough.

Do you worry that you don’t know enough to confidently answer questions in meetings or move to the next level in your career?

If you’re nodding your head, then this week’s episode is a must listen. I share:

  • The very real reason why women doubt their skills and experience more than men do
  • Why the desire to be seen as an expert could be holding you back and how to recognise this
  • How to feel confident NOT knowing all the answers

You worth at work is not determined by how much you know and I hope this episode reminds you of that.

10 Jan 2021Ep 30 Talking Redundancy and Resilience with Eleanor Tweddell01:09:03

In this episode of the Influence & Impact podcast for female leaders I'm chatting to Eleanor Tweddell, author of the book "Why Losing Your Job Could Be the Best Thing That Ever Happened To You".  We talk about how to thrive when you've been made redundant, from dealing with those initial emotions to making decisions about your next steps.

We also discuss how leaders who are making colleagues redundant can handle it with kindness.  Redundancy is one of life's big events and Eleanor has done a wonderful job of taking her experiences and creating a toolkit others can use.

About my guest: Eleanor Tweddell founded Another Door when she was made redundant and had a feeling she wanted to do something other than corporate life. She has worked for organisations such as Costa Coffee, Virgin Atlantic, Vodafone and Channel 4 - but it felt like it was time to change.  She said to get curious about what else was out there, and what else could she be doing. She wrote a blog, started a podcast and wrote a book 'Why losing your job could be the best thing to happen to you' published by Penguin in Nov 2020.

Another Door is a club supporting people in the space in-between a door closing and the next door opening and takes people from shock to thriving. Another Door also works with businesses to handle redundancies fairly and supports their employees with outplacement workshops.

22 Nov 2020Ep 25 - How to disagree with people more senior than you00:27:11

If you haven’t done so already, please leave me a review and thanks for your support of this show!

Starting a new organisation can be daunting at the best of times but starting as a leader when everyone is working remotely adds new levels of complexity.  So in this episode I’m sharing my advice on how to start a leadership role in a new organisation.  I talk about being intentional about the impression you want to make, getting aligned on expectations, building relationships with key stakeholders and much more.

28 Apr 2023Ep 134 - Thriving as an introvert in the workplace with Emma Taggart00:52:58

Up to 50% of people have introverted tendencies yet meetings are still designed in a way that doesn’t allow them to contribute effectively.  In this episode I’m talking to Emma Taggart, a leadership and career coach for introverted leaders about what introverts bring to the workplace and leadership, how to have confidence as an introvert and how we can run meetings in a more inclusive and effective way.

It's a super practical conversation that I highly recommend, whether you recognise your own introverted tendencies or you want to run a team that brings the best out in everyone, regardless of their thinking style.

About Emma Taggart:

Emma Taggart is a leadership and career coach for introverted leaders. She helps ambitious people with a quiet, reserved and unassuming style to feel confident in their capabilities and progress their careers without changing who they are.

Before training as a coach Emma was policy director at a breast cancer charity, chief of staff to a prominent politician, and ran an independent consultancy supporting not-for-profit organisations to campaign and influence effectively.

04 Sep 2022Ep 110 - How to stop overthinking re-release with Tahirih McLaren-Brown00:54:39

Are you an overthinker? Perhaps you ruminate on past situations, worry about future events or are fearful of the judgement of others?

This re-release of one of my most popular podcasts with Tahirih McLaren-Brown is for you.

Overthinking can affect both our work and personal lives as well as how we show up with confidence as a leader. Our thoughts also directly impact the levels of daily stress we experience and how quickly we can recover from it.

We discussed:

  • What mindfulness is and how it can benefit you
  • How you can have more awareness and control of your thoughts and emotions
  • What you can do if you’re feeling worried or anxious about returning to the office

03 Jun 2024Ep 163 – Reducing drama in your team with Rebekah Whitaker00:37:11

If you’ve noticed unhelpful patterns of behaviours playing out in your team or if you’ve got a tense relationship with a colleague then this week’s episode can provide insight into what’s causing those patterns.

My guest, leadership coach and podcast host Rebekah Whitaker shares why we get pulled into the ‘drama triangle’ and what we can learn from Transactional Analysis to understand ourselves and our relationships with others better.

Transactional Analysis is new to me so it was really interesting to understand the ‘drama triangle’ and reflect on how it plays out in the workplace and the role we can play as leaders in creating more positive behaviours and relationships.

In this episode Rebekah provides an introduction to this concept and I’m delighted that she’s running a workshop within Women Leading this autumn to bring the next level of insights into how leaders can reduce drama within their teams.

This is the Influence & Impact podcast for women leaders, helping you confidently navigate the ups and downs of leadership and feel less alone on your journey as a leader.

My name’s Carla Miller, I’ve been coaching leaders for the past 15 years and I’m your leadership bestie.  I’m here to remind you of the value to bring to your organisation, to help believe in yourself and to share practical tools and insights from myself and my brilliant guests that will help you succeed in your career.

Delegation is an essential skill that every leader needs but are many good at it? According to research, the answer is no.

Being great at delegation makes a huge difference to your workload and stress levels, allows you to do the higher impact tasks required in your role and is a way to develop the people in your team.

In this episode, I share:

  • The benefits of delegating for you and your team
  • Four signs that you need to delegate
  • The seven deadly sins of delegation
  • How to change your limiting beliefs around delegation

While listening to this episode, I encourage you to assess your own view on delegation, whether you could delegate more and what actions you could take this week to help you do that.
