On September 29, the IAA will present the Anirudh Varma Collective of New Delhi with it’s ten member team which will perform Indian classical and folk music at Zilkha Hall in the Hobby Center. We are fortunate to have Anirudh Varma himself and vocalist Saptak Chatterjee calling in from Portland, Oregon, where they will be performing later today, to talk about their musical compositions.

4:40 pm Identity theft is one of the most common types of consumer fraud when someone steals an individual's personal information, such as their social security number or bank account information, and uses it for their own financial gain. Consumer fraud is commonly defined as deceptive business practices that cause consumers to suffer financial or other losses. The victims believe they are participating in a legal and valid business transaction when they are actually being defrauded. We turn to the Harris County District Attorney Office’s Assistant DA Shiela Hanselto explain how we can avoid becoming victims and how to protect ourselves.

Also, the increasing incidents of horrific neglect of children, many found alone in deplorable conditions, has stunned the community. Local officials have responded with more investigations and stiff punishment for the offenders. Chief Prosecutor Gilbert Sawtelle with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office joins us today to explain what is being done.

The decor and setting was the best that the ICC has ever pulled together for one of their two flagship events - the second being Republic Day. We are joined by ICC President Malla Makela, Event Chair Jasmeeta Singh and Secretary Santosh Verma to explain how the function all came together.

We were fascinated how an American-born teenager came about to write such an amazing book and asked Esha to come to the studio with her mom Ruchi to tell us more.

Raja Banga and Debleena Banerji have taken their passion for harmonizing with nature and the environment by opening a wilderness preserve called the Garden of Prana in Pattison, just north of Brookshire. It has taken them three years of planning and hardwork, and they are nearing completion even as they hold some programs at the Garden. They call in today with more details.

The rollback of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs is a corporate and higher education trend that has been gaining momentum in recent years. We are joined today by Niyati Shah, Director of Litigation at Asian Americans Advancing Justice in Washington, DC to explain what the effect of this ruling has been so far.

5:20 pm Geeta Kadakia is an English teacher at the DAV Montessori & Elementary School in Houston where her young daughter Jasmine, who is now 10, has studied since she was 2 1/2 years old. The DAV inculcates Hindu cultures and values in its curriculum of basic courses. Geeta shares her daughter’s education at the school as well as her own experience as a teacher there.

Longtime choreographer Kusum Sharma has found an ingenious way of recycling these clothes for the benefit of the poor and refugees in India and joins us today to tell us more.

Recognizing this need, several non-profits offer scholarships to help part of the way. 4:20 pm The Mayor of Houston has led an Iftar dinner - or breaking of fast during Ramadan - for the city’s Muslim community since the event was first conceived 12 years ago in 2010 by then Mayor Lee Brown. And for almost all those years, Muhammad Saeed Sheikh has held the formidable task of being the event coordinator. Now, after a two year hiatus where the event due to COVID was done by drive-thru, the Iftar was held live once again at The Bayou Center Music Center. Saeed Sheik joins us to talk about the rejuvenated event.

4:40 pm Vaisakhi is a happy festival for Hindus and Sikhs alike heralding the coming of the Spring harvest. For Sikhs it holds a deeper significance as in 1699, it was also the formation of the Khalsa by the Tenth Guru Gobind Singh. We are joined today by a very talented 17-year-old high school junior Gracy Kaur Singh who will describe how Vaisakhi is celebrated by the community at the Sikh National Center.

Current plans are for part of it to be converted to affordable housing, while the other parts will be carved out later. We wondered how malls in general are faring as there are plenty more that are performing marginally nationwide. We turn to Naveen Jaggi, President of Retail Advisory Services of the global real estate giant, JLL, for some answers. 4:50 pm How is the real estate market accommodating these changes? For example, how easy is it to turn an office building into residential condos, or for that matter a grocery store into a fitness club? Are there other ways to make money on these real estate investments, like apartment complex redos? He work has been exhibited all over the world and his signature style paintings grace many homes. He was recently commissioned by the City of Houston to make a canvas for Terminal D at Bush Intercontinental Airport and it was installed at a new wing wall at Gate D15. 4:20 pm The renowned poet and Nobel Laureatte Rabindranath Tagore visited Houston on Feb 13, 1921 to give a talk at Rice University. In 2013, the Houston Bengali community cemented that visit by inaugurating a statue to Tagore in Ray Miller Park on the city’s west side. Now, the Tagore Society of Houston is planning to expand that installation. To tell us more about these plans are Surajit Das Gupta, Gopendu Chakrabarti and Pradeep Anand.

4:50 pm Antarctica is the new frontier in tourism but isn’t for the faint of heart or budget travellers. Recently Dr Jay Raman and his wife Viji toured the area and mingled with the penguins. They are with us today to describe the experience. Dr Raman has been a frequent guest on the show talking about his well received book “From the Land of Spice to the Land of Oil” and will also relate another episode from the book.

Ashok Moza is another frequent guest on our show as we have drawn on his extensive knowledge about his ancestral home, Kashmir, as well as his experience as a vegan and what veganism entails. Today, he will talk about the soon to be released movie “The Kashmir Files” which will screen in several AMC theatres across the city on a March 16. Dr. Surinder Kaul, a Physician leader who practices Internal Medicine in Houston is also from Kashmir and is the architect of the movie. He tirelessly advocated Director Vivek Agnihotri to make the movie. It is a powerful narrative about a family’s experience as told by the lone surviving member.

In the past two decades, it has spawned a whole new category of criminals whose victims are unwittingly defrauded, sometimes from overseas operators. We turn to the Harris County District Attorney Office’s Assistant DA Keith Houston to explain how we can avoid becoming victims and how to protect ourselves.

5:00 pm With very lax gun laws that allow people to open carry loaded firearms, Texas laeds the country in the number of gun-related homicides and other crimes. The State Republican leadership has allowed this situation to fester, even as they have bowed down to the far-right conservatives. We will be joined by two young Pakistani Americans - Saami Baig & Jasir Rahman - who have taken up leadership roles in organizations which want to change these gun laws and restore safety for Texan citizens.

Through posts on social media, websites and email, we leave our digital footprint in cyberspace and have devices full of photos and videos in hard drives and the icloud. But what happens to all this data when a person dies and no longer regularly posts items? Is this data available or lost forever? Or is there a Death Data Vault to store the data? 4:20 pm Juvenile crime has been on the rise for many years and many young offenders are incarcerated in County jails. Today, we will talk with Harris County Assistant District Attorney Lynn Nguyen who heads up the Juvenile Crimes division to learn how widespread this problem is, the rates of recidivism and what is being done to control such crimes.

4:50 pm General elections are currently being held in India over the next five weeks, with two weeks of voting gone by. It brings out  the largest such turnout of voters in the world, over 900 million people across 27 states. It is both a logistics challenge as well as a civics lesson in hearing the voices of people in distant regions. We are joined today again by India political analysts Aadit Kappadia, Kapil Sharma and Vishnu Pandey, to learn about this election process.
5:20 pm Dr. Sanjay Mehta was on the show a month ago talking about his technique for treating cancers of the prostate, breast, lung, brain, GI tract with focused radiation beams with minimal side effects, because it avoids collateral damage to other nearby organs. He related how his practice has adopted the European technique of very low dose radiation to treat arthritis and tendonitis with excellent results in only 6 painless treatments. There was such an interest in this treatment that we have asked him back on to tell us more about these promising treatments.
