07 Feb 2023 | ...Ralph Salmins | 01:27:10
Before I introduce today’s guest, I want to recommend a couple of podcasts to you. I recently spoke with Sebastian Philpott and Verity Simmons after my episode with Camilla Pay. Turns out Seb and Verity were due to speak with Camilla for their podcast shortly afterwards, but I’d basically asked all their questions. Seems it was a good thing and they ended up having a great chat about all things non-music on their “Three In A Bar” podcast. If you’re interested in musicians and the goings on in the industry, please go and check it out. Also, my mate and previous pod guest Rob Harris has a podcast called “Rob’s Funk and Junk” podcast. It’s often him talking about work, life and music and has some interesting, fun and sometimes daft insights into the industry. Anyway - back to episode 18. Today’s guest is Ralph Salmins. Ralph is a drummer based between the UK and south west France. He’s a first call session musician whose list of credits is so long, I had to stop reading whilst researching for the pod. A few highlights I picked out include Paul McCartney, Aretha Franklin, Elton John, James Brown, Quincy Jones and Lady Gaga. They’re just the ones from the pop world. There are countless Jazz credits, and Ralph has played on over 180 film soundtracks. He’s also a professor of drum kit at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. We spoke briefly before the recording and he told me his story was boring… Ralph, if you’re listening, I disagree… Amongst other things, we discussed Ralph’s early playing years, working with Van Morrison, being open to new styles of music, and the benefits of learning about engineering. Apologies in advance as there were one or two wifi issues, but you can hear 99.9% of the conversation clearly. I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did! Follow me on Instagram - @nategroove
14 Feb 2023 | ...Elle Cato | 01:06:13
Elle is a singer based in London. As a backing vocalist, she can usually be found touring with the likes of Lisa Stansfield, Will Young, Van Morrison and Robbie Williams. I managed to catch her whilst in the middle of a tour with Robbie. Elle is covering the tour for another singer, so it was an interesting time to chat, not only as she was on tour, but because she was also having to fit in to a well oiled touring machine. I hadn’t spoken to Elle for a few months, so it was great to catch up. I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did. Follow me on Instagram - @nategroove
21 Feb 2023 | ...Simon "Diffy" Difford | 01:18:11
A slightly different episode today. I wanted to shed a bit of light on someone who does a job most people don’t see. As session musicians, we’re often told a time to be somewhere, we arrive, and our equipment is already set up. Not to mention the stage and lights and whatnot. I thought it’d be fun to chat with a backline technician about what they do and what it’s like to be on that side of a gig or tour. Diffy is a backline technician who specialises in drums and percussion. For the last twenty years he’s been touring with artists like Liam Gallagher, Glass Animals, Jamiroquai and Tom Jones. We discussed his move from drummer to drum tech, balancing tours with being a dad, what exactly a backline tech does, and how touring can be a lonely but brilliant job. There was a weird issue with Diffy’s airpods for a while, so please excuse the clicking noises. They do eventually stop, I promise! By the way, please check out the links at the bottom of the show notes. You can support the podcast, and also email me. I’m looking to do a Q&A episode soon, so send your questions to nwinsessionwith@gmail.com. I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did. Follow me on Instagram - @nategroove

07 Mar 2023 | ... Jerry Hey | 01:12:56

He has six Grammy wins and eleven nominations to his name. He’s worked with the likes of Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Earth, Wind & Fire, Frank Sinatra and Whitney Houston. His actual list of credits is way too long to get into here. Not to mention the film and TV credits. Amongst many other things, we discussed Jerry’s early thoughts on jumping from classical music to Jazz and Pop, how being in Hawaii changed his life, getting the call from Quincy Jones, and how although technology keeps changing, great players will always be a part of the music making process. I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did. (Recorded 10th February 2023) Follow me on Instagram - @nategroove

Right - here we go… Follow me on Instagram - @nategroove

Mark is a drummer based in London. His credits include Ed Sheeran, Tom Jones, Leona Lewis, Olly Murs and Pixie Lott. He’s also worked on film soundtracks such as This Is England and Rocketman. We didn’t really discuss this during our chat, but it’s certainly a very admirable thing to be doing in his time off! If you enjoy this podcast, please take a second to leave a nice rating or review. It’s hugely appreciated! I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did Follow me on Instagram - @nategroove

11 Mar 2025 | ...Keely Myers | 01:13:31
Slightly different episode today. As you know, I started this podcast as a way to shine a light on the wonderful session musicians that help make our favourite artists sounds good on a show day, or recording date and whatnot. On a show day, the musicians and artists might be the only people you see on stage, but obviously, they’re not the only people putting the whole thing together. Moving forward, I’m hoping to speak to more people who work behind the scenes and make the show day or recording date run smoothly. That brings me to today’s guest - Keely Myers. Keely wears a lot of hats in the music industry, but I first met her in 2024 in her capacity as tour manager, so for the sake of this episode of the pod, she’ll mostly be Keely the tour manager. Her credits include artists like Take That, Kate Bush, Muse and Anastacia. Amongst many other things, we discussed - the importance of professional relationships, her love for show production from an early age, and Keely’s great work to keep everyone feeling supported and happy on tour. I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as I did! (Recorded Jan 30th 2025) Follow me on Instagram - @nategroove
