18 May 2023Meeting The Margin00:35:46

Nick's going solo today to explore the themes and concepts that will inspire Meet Me at The Margin - a month-long virtual conference for queer people who want to reclaim and re-story their innate capacity for ambiguity, paradox, and liminality, which will take place June 4-28, 2023.

Through a series of eight workshops facilitated by some of today’s most Marginal thinkers, participants explore queerness through the lenses of tarot, astrology, narrative therapy, eco-mythology, archetype, art, and more. Facilitators include Charlie Claire Burgess, Amy DiGennaro, Edgar Fabian Frías, Nick Kepley, Jonathan Koe, Elias Lawliet, Sophie Strand, Jaison Perez, Chanti Tacoronte-Perez.

Workshops will be held every Sunday (from 6-8pm ET) and Wednesday (from 7-9pm ET) in June, for a total of 16 hours of instruction. Captions will be enabled for all sessions, and recordings will be available through 7/31.

11 Oct 2021Outsider Tarot with Bobby Abate00:47:15

Bobby Abate is a queer artist, filmmaker, activist and Tarot aficionado from Brooklyn, New York, and creator of the new OUTSIDER TAROT. An outsider himself since the first grade, Bobby found refuge in the underground world of provocateurs, artists, queers, and punks. His introduction to the Tarot was through the Tarot of the Cat People at the age of seventeen. Ever since, he sought to create a deck that paid homage to all the beautiful misfits who live by their own rules. Bobby spent eight years researching and creating the OUTSIDER TAROT, which marries ancient esoteric systems with the revolutionary spirit of the boundary-breaking forward thinkers that have left an indelible impression on his life. Visit @bobbysweetkitty on Instagram to see his other artworks.

IN THIS CONVERSATION Bobby and I discuss paths to understanding the cards for those of us who live outside of the mainstream narrative, and his eight-year process of researching, channeling and refining his new work of art, the OUTSIDER TAROT.

13 Apr 2022Timeless Archetypes with Jonathan Koe01:05:09

The use of archetypes to describe, refine, and create our reality is an essential part of many Astrological and Tarot practices. Yet for many people, the idea that we could ever reduce or essentialize the human experience into neat categories seems futile at best and harmful at worst.

IN THIS CONVERSATION, Jonathan Koe (a.k.a. Nate Qi) leads us down a winding and wonderous reframing of all that archetype can be, sprouting branches of wisdom along the way on the topics of time, history, and the healing of divination in the "Western" imagination.

Jonathan Koe (they/he) is a queer mystic who currently lives in Brooklyn, NY, land of the Lenape people. Fluent in the languages of music, astrology, tarot, energy work, statistics, and the Akashic perspective, Jonathan aims to empower the collective through compassionate discernment, to nurture communities of passionate seekers, and to expand our sense of interconnectedness beyond the collective myths of binary-thinking and not-enoughness. Jonathan recently launched a podcast called 'Healing The Spirit.'

In our final installment of this special summer series, we're venturing into new territory with Oracle & Lenormand cards, examining the ways in which the work of Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell led Tarot readers to apply more psychological and therapeutic interpretations to the cards, and discussing how we imagine Tarot might continue to expand and evolve into the future. One thing's for sure, Tarot readers have continued to find new ways to keep the cards relevant and the time is ripe for a new evolution of our practices and philosophies.

Jordan Rayne of @sincerely_the_tarot is a queer trans-masc tarot lover. He believes that tarot is a juicy tool for self-empowerment and meaning-making. Subscribers of his monthly snail mail offering receive these treasures and a tarot card from a different, featured deck.

Sam Valentine of @valentine.tarot doesn’t like to self-identify, but when she does, it’s as an aesthete, tarot reader, & curator of vibes. Reading tarot primarily for fun and enjoyment, their work leaves space for not-knowing, and they hold no set expectations about what the cards might “mean.” A tarot hobbyist, creative, and magical practitioner on the side, Sam spends most of her time on her work in her professional capacity as a community Archivist.

25 Aug 2022SHUFFLING THRU HISTORY III: Western Occultism & the Smith-Waite Deck00:26:07

Welcome to one of the most highly documented periods in Tarot history: the codification of western occultism, the rise and prominence of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, and the creation of the Smith-Waite Tarot deck. It's a time marked by problematic syncretism, in which initiatory fraternities invented stories and misappropriated spiritual knowledge in an attempt to make their version of the Tarot more "legitimate." Although many of these practices have been cloaked in secrecy for centuries, we're bringing them to light in today's chapter of Tarot history!

18 May 2022Quarterly Questions: Divination as Resistance00:27:14

Who told you not to tell the future? How might the act of divination be a form of resistance to the capitalistic/colonialist construction of time? IN TODAY'S CONVERSATION Angie and I are falling deep down the time rabbit hole that was opened during our recent interview with Jonathan Koe. Is it really possible to offer a "collective reading?" How can we use Tarot to subvert the linear idea of time? What changes when gender changes from a noun to verb?

27 Apr 2022The Stories We Dream of with Tara Rin Burke00:58:35
Tara Rin Burke is a biracial non-binary Japanese Mystic who leans deeply into the wisdom of elemental magick and metaphor to connect. They are claircognizant, clairsentient, and clairaudient, and enter into relationship with these gifts through a lense of neuro-divergence and recognizing that so much of the way they live their life travels across timelines. Tara roots their personal folklore and mythological senses through seasonal folklore rooted in both Gaelic and Shinto based cosmologies where they track ancestral veneration, lineage tracking, and understanding the complexity, nuance and particularities of being of Irish, Slovak and Japanese descent. A forever student of practical magick making magick accessible regardless of entry point & introduction, Tara roots their studies within the framework of animist studies which in earlier years were guided largely in part by Laura Blakeman and Aquarian Witch Connie Bender. They have felt continued wisdom teachings and offerings on de-centering the white-centric spirituality complex and honoring earth-magick and wisdom dreams honored by BIPOC folks across the Diaspora, through listening and being in appreciation of the impact of the mystical throughout culture and across time. They deeply credit the work of Octavia Butler, Audre Lorde, Jewelle Gomez, Mary Oliver, Grace Lee Boggs, and Ursula K. Le Guin, as offering them a way to see worlds beyond the ones we’re living in, and to see new futures through their knowing that something exists beyond our scope of current lived realities. Their deeper understandings of time-travel comes from their love of science fiction and the imaginal landscapes of Anime, ASMR, collective organizing spaces, and understanding the pathways of dreams. Tara believes deeply in the body’s wisdom to hold informational coordinates for who we are and who we are becoming. TO WORK WITH TARA: find them through Instagram, their Patreon Hearth, and their website which, as a neuroemergent witch, is in the process of transmutation. 15 Jun 2023The Magician and "The Self" with Shannon Knight of The Tarot Diagnosis00:40:11

Today we're sharing a conversation that originally took place on The Tarot Diagnosis podcast. In it, Nick and Shannon discuss The Magician, and use this iconic card to investigate and trouble the notion of "Self" as it appears in Western ontology.

Shannon Knight (she/her) is a queer therapist licensed in both Arizona and Florida where she specializes in working with individuals and couples. Shannon received her B.A. in Applied Clinical Psychology from the Florida Institute of Technology and her M.S. in Mental Health Counseling from Johns Hopkins University. Shannon currently resides in Arizona and when she needs to escape the heat, she’s traveling to find mountains and cooler weather with her partner and her dog Barley. She feels highly aligned with the Queen of Swords and is constantly trying to deconstruct her perceptions of Temperance and The Sun.

Be sure to check out Shannon's great work over on The Tarot Diagnosis podcast!

Rebecca Scolnick is an emotional witch, forever seeker and queer human lady (she/her), who uses magic and storytelling to support unlearning work and inspire new meaning making. 18 Aug 2022SHUFFLING THRU HISTORY II: Romani History00:33:47

We're devoting the entirety of today's episode to the misunderstood and often completely erased story of the Romani people. Many of us in the Tarot community complain about the way cartomancy gets vilified and misrepresented by religion and pop culture. But the history of that stereotyping rests solely in the horrific persecution Roma have faced for centuries. Romani fortune-tellers have influenced and inspired countless Tarot practitioners over the years, and we owe it to them to lift up their voices and their stories.

Tell us what you think! Write in to isotpod@gmail.com and share this episode with a friend you think would enjoy learning about the history of the Tarot.

30 Mar 2023The Body as a Site of Divination with Madison Nees, Guest Hosted by Jonathan Koe01:10:08

Today we are thrilled to welcome our first guest host, Jonathan Koe, who shares a highly charged and vulnerable conversation with their teacher and friend Madison Nees.

Jonathan, who first appeared on In Search of Tarot back in April of 2022, is a queer mystic who currently lives in Brooklyn, NY, land of the Lenape people. Fluent in the language of music, astrology, tarot, energy work, statistics, and the Akashic perspective, Jonathan aims to empower the collective through compassionate discernment, to nurture communities of passionate seekers, and to expand our sense of interconnectedness beyond the myths of binary-thinking and not-enoughness. You can follow Jonathan's contemplations and conversations with friends (including Nick and Madison) on their podcast, Healing The Spirit.

Originally from Tulsa, Oklahoma, Madison Nees currently lives and practices on Kumeyaay land (also known as San Diego). Madison is a queer artist, human, guide, and facilitator who believes in a non-expert model that empowers the individual and collective to tap into their own wisdom rather than as a facilitator having the answers. This is Radical Aliveness.

When Madison began their own journey, they did not understand that the pull to Somatics was a call of their ancestors. They were being pulled to embody all the gifts their mother could not and ultimately lost her life suppressing. Madison was being pulled to feel the things their Grandmother had no language for.

Madison’s body knew the language however, and it spoke in illness, pains, aches and rage. During this process, Madison discovered gifts hidden beneath these repressed emotions. These gifts were the sensations, intuition and creativity of their lineage. When Madison stopped trying to push these parts away, they wondered what would happen if they let them grow. They grew into Madison’s practice today.

She earned her masters degrees in education and depth psychology and is currently working on a Phd in community, liberation, indigenous, and eco psychologies. 18 Oct 2021Contemplative Tarot with Morgan Glover00:57:34

Morgan Glover is a tarot contemplative, former journalist, and working mother who's on a meandering journey toward finding her place in the earth community. She approaches tarot as a practical, poetic, and philosophical discipline, and is drawn toward questions of an eco-soulcentric nature. She is currently pursuing a master's degree in sustainability and environment, and sees no contradiction in reading her textbooks with a deck in hand. She shares her tarot musings on Instagram @mojoglo.

IN THIS CONVERSATION I speak with Morgan about her refreshingly open approach to interpreting the cards and the way she uses the Tarot to ground herself in the here and now. We also talk at length about her love of Uusi decks, particularly the Pagan Otherworlds and Materia Prima, and she shares how the cards have become an ally in deepening her relationship with poetry and the written word.

29 Jun 2021LIVE from the 2021 Searcher's Solstice Tarot Conference01:30:20

Happy Pride, Queers! As a way to honor and celebrate a month that should NEVER end, I'm dropping my first ever LIVE episode featuring the panel discussion "Expanding Sex, Sexuality & Gender in the Tarot" with Charlie Claire Burgess and Cassandra Snow, which took place this month at the 2021 Searcher's Solstice Tarot Conference.

This recording begins with my opening remarks and then moves into a deeply vulnerable dialogue between the three of us on what it means to navigate this life as queer, non-binary people, and how we each live in constant interrogation and exploration of the Tarot and its ability to depict our lived experiences.

Whoever and wherever you are, I hope you can receive this as a parting gift of sorts as we struggle to say goodbye to this beautiful month of Pride.

01 Jun 2023The Paradox of Queerness with Britten LaRue00:51:28

Today's episode is first for us. It's a crossover/part two that builds on a conversation Nick took part in over on Britten LaRue's Moon to Moon podcast. In that episode, Nick shared his thoughts on The Margin, and mused on queerness as an unknowable, unspeakable power. Then Britten asked a question that sent both of their heads spinning in opposite directions.

Today, Nick and Britten are coming back together to hash it all out and share where their different experiences have led them since that first conversation. If you'd like to listen to part one of the conversation on Moon to Moon you can do so HERE.

Britten LaRue is a mystic, teacher, and author who channels the spirit and cosmic realms to conjure words that create cracks: cracks in who we think we are and what we think this reality is. A recovering academic and a single mom, Britten is more interested in questions than in answers. She creates potent offerings anchored from her deep trust that we are fractal beings who are dreaming new worlds into being together. Britten's book Living Astrology will be published in early 2024. In the meantime, you can learn and unlearn with her through her podcast Moon to Moon, on Instagram @brittenlarue, via one of her sumptuous workbooks, through one-on-one mentorship, or from inside one of her many learning containers.

17 May 2021Crow Mother with Liza Fenster00:58:11

Liza (She Her Hers) is a life long Witch who works as Reiki Master Teacher, Tarot Educator/Reader and Ordained Minister. Acting in this way as community servant, she is  committed to both ecological and community healing on local and global levels - and with that, deeply committed to social justice and the healing and reparation of BIPOC communities and to the decolonization of wellness.

It was truly an honor to hear Liza speak about the magic of the body, and the power of being embodied in human form, particularly in relation to child-carrying and the act of giving birth. She also explained to me how meeting her biological father and reconnecting with her indigenous heritage led her to serve Crow Mother, and together we found space for goddexx in everything, even social media. Above all, Liza's story reminded me of the innate power we all inherit through the simple, yet profound, act of being alive.

07 Dec 2020Ep. 15 - Anti-Racism + The Tarot with Maria Minnis00:55:52

Maria Minnis is an ancestrally guided writer, designer, and tarot reader with Southern roots. Her motto is “a word is a spell,” and she uses it to guide her work in her completely donation-based offerings, such as her tarot poems and her blog series, Anti-Racism with the Tarot. Every week, she uses the Major Arcana as an analog to discuss various facets of anti-racism work. The series is a collection of exercises, readings, journaling prompts, and direct action activities to encourage people to create everyday change within themselves and their communities.

I was thrilled to welcome Maria to the podcast for a dialogue on the importance of utilizing Tarot for anti-racism work, and the challenge of navigating white-dominated spiritual spaces. Our discussion was filled with deep questions and tender vulnerability, all held under the spell of her remarkable grace.

11 Apr 2021Christianity + Tarot with Brittany Muller00:46:35

She loves exploring the intersections of Christianity and the occult, and she’s currently writing a Christian interpretation of the tarot for St. Martin’s Press.

In this conversation, Brittany and I discuss the more mystical, contemplative sides of Christianity and the way Tarot can create a space for reflection and prayer. Brittany also talks about upcoming book, her expansive readings of the court cards as saints rather than gendered hierarchal figures, and why it can sometimes feel harder to talk about the "easy" cards.

27 Apr 2021Photographing the Tarot with Nicolas Bruno00:53:43

Nicolas Bruno is an artist based in Northport, New York, where he photographs and fabricates props for his compositions. Bruno weaves together his terrifying experiences of Sleep Paralysis with surreal self portraiture in a therapeutic translation of night terror to image. His constructed worlds of uncertainty exist on a plane between waking and sleeping, where he is tormented by a physical embrace of the subconscious and its perils, all while being paralyzed in bed. Influences of 19th century Romanticists, historical texts of occultism, and dream symbolism lace each composition with various visual dialogues of the macabre.

In this conversation, Nicolas and I talk about his artistic process and his newest creation, The Somnia Tarot, which channels his nocturnal experiences into a stunning 78-card deck.

23 Mar 2023The History (Mystery) of the Tarot with Sanyu Estelle00:55:38

Sanyu Estelle is the author of "The History (Mystery) of the Tarot," the opening chapter of Tarot for Pregnancy by Brittany Carmona-Holt. Sanyu is a Claircognizant ("clear knowing") Soothsayer ("truth teller") that is also known as "The Word Witch" because of her deep love for word origins (etymology) and word culture (philology). These natural inclinations are bolstered by an 11+ year practice of Taoism, as well as a 10+ year relationship with Ifa, the indigenous tradition of the Yoruba people of now-Nigeria. Sanyu is known for her straightforward card reading style and her way with words via writing, speaking and singing. A "1st generationish" US-American of Ugandan and Belizean descent, Sanyu was born, bred and buttered in Los Angeles on land traditionally stewarded by the Tongva. Many dream up the future, but it belongs to their descendants. Thus, Sanyu is the best thing that came out of her Colonizer’s lineage. She uses their/her own ancestry to denounce their indoctrination into the invention of Whiteness through colonization. They are lucky to have her and they ensured not only that she is, but what she is.

11 Aug 2022SHUFFLING THRU HISTORY I: Origins & Tarot de Marseille00:26:50

We're walking you thru a multi-episode exploration of the complete history of the Tarot (or at least what we know of it)! Playing card origins, erased Romani culture, occult misunderstandings, modern day innovations - we're weaving it all together to create the most comprehensive story that two self-described Tarot-nerds-turned-amateur-historians could ever hope to tell.

CHAPTER ONE: Origins & Tarot de Marseille - Where and how did the Tarot come to be? What exactly do people mean when they talk about "traditional Tarot decks?" Who invented the Tarot de Marseille and why? We'll cover these foundational topics and more, including a discussion on the first artist to illustrate the pip cards (spoiler: it wasn't Pamela Colman Smith).

02 Dec 2021Black Queer Tarot00:55:15

Challenging outdated, non-inclusive decks of the past, the BLACK QUEER TAROT takes the traditional 78-card Tarot arcana and remakes them with a diverse cast of muses.  Kendrick Daye is a multimedia artist and designer, living in Harlem, NY. His diverse approaches to making art include art direction, bespoke design, music, and most notably collage - both digital and analog. Kendrick aims to create work that imagines a future where Black queer life is prosperous and thriving.  Justin Henry, spiritual consultant for the Black Queer Tarot, has been using their eight years of tarot experience to ensure that each design accurately depicts the meaning of each card in the tarot deck. Not only this, but they are the sole author of the entire guidebook of 156 meanings that others may use to inform their own readings. They are a graduate of Columbia University with a degree in Psychology and Sociology, a self-taught makeup artist and the Founder and Practitioner of Tarot Supreme.  Together, the three of us discuss the importance of representation in Tarot, the complications of taking on the role of reader, oracle, or guide, and the need for vivid imagination in both Tarot and queer life.

29 Oct 2023The Story Doula with Dajé Alōh00:47:28

Dajé Alōh is a storyteller, emergent strategy facilitator, and earth-based, spirit led visionary leadership coach helping creators pursue the deepest dreams of their heart.

As a Memphis-born, Appalachian-cured storyteller, song-keeper, and essence liberation coach, Dajé is here to support seekers, lovers, crafters, and kin in finding and singing the deep song of their lives. There are new stories, new ways, and new templates for meeting life that long to be born into our collective awareness. To nurture new stories, we must get low and listen. We must turn on the ears of the psyche, and call them forth from the deep. This is her work as a story doula – calling forth true and deep liberation from the collective subconscious and bringing it into the light.

18 Aug 2020Ep. 10 - New Moon in Leo + Strength with Sara Hanks of Cottonwood Tarot00:59:07

We're closing out this fiery Leo season under the new moon by reflecting on Major Arcana number 8, Strength. What happens at the crossroads of strength and vulnerability? What does it mean to soften into leadership? What does it feel like to live life from the heart?

We are so honored to welcome our special guest, Sara Hanks of Cottonwood Tarot. Sara is a tarot reader and post-Mormon witch living in Utah. She began reading tarot in 2014 and launched Cottonwood Tarot in 2017 to offer readings to others. Sara views her role as a tarot reader as something like a translator, someone familiar with the language of the cards who can help interpret their messages as querents seek out their inner wisdom. She works often with fellow Mormons who are transitioning out of the church and looking for ways to develop their own spirituality and reclaim their sovereign voices.

22 Feb 2021Defining Ourselves with Chloe O. Davis00:51:22

In this episode, I am joined by my friend Chloe O. Davis to talk about her debut book, The Queens' English: The LGBTQIA+ Dictionary of Lingo and Colloquial Phrases. Chloe has been collecting research for this book through candid conversations with friends and loved ones, since 2006. Join us for a conversation on the transformative power of words to define, refine, and shape who we are.

Chloe O. Davis is a proud Black bisexual woman and debut author who works in the entertainment industry in New York. A graduate of Hampton University and Temple University, she has centered her creative platform on amplifying the narratives of Black culture and heightening the awareness of the LGBTQIA+ community. Davis’s work as a dancer, actor, and creative has allowed her to travel to all fifty states and internationally. In addition to performing at premier theaters across the country, such as New York City Center, the Apollo Theater, the Kennedy Center, the Muny, and the Berkeley Repertory Theatre, she has appeared on PBS Great Performances with Porgy and Bess at the Metropolitan Opera, Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert on NBC, and Southern Landscape performed by the Philadelphia Dance Company (PHILADANCO!).

In tandem with performing, Chloe O. Davis has spent fifteen years researching, writing and creating The Queens’ English, The Dictionary for LGBTQIA+ Lingo and Colloquial Phrases. She believes this dictionary is a starting point for important conversations around inclusivity, sexuality, gender expression and identity.
