16 Aug 2024 | Ep 7 The One About The Bruery | 01:26:26
Episode 7 was so chock-full of beer geek-dom that we had to split it into two parts. Part one includes an opening beer rant about last weekend’s grand opening at The Bruery in Meridian. Then we do a little brew news and our interview with The Bruery owner/operator Jimbo Wood. Jimbo was such an awesome guest that I decided to run basically the whole interview and push Friday Night Pints to a part two. Jimbo is a great guy. He was so fascinated with craft beer that he actually sent away for beers while still in college, which is next level beer nerd stuff. Our chat led us down many roads including how he got to Idaho all the way from Alabama and how he then hooked up with the owners of The Bruery in Orange County to open his own spot in the Treasure Valley. Believe me when I say that you will love this guy. Subscribe here on Substack, Apple Podcasts, or Spotify. Learn more about The Bruery in Meridian. The Bruery in Meridian’s amazing tap list. I’ve had some feedback that people would like to see some more written stuff, so I obliged this week because there were a lot of new beers out there. That column will be coming to Substack subscribers tomorrow morning and everyone else should be able to find it on the social medias later on Saturday. This is a public episode. Episode 9 is here! In this episode, we get out of the kettle and go into the vines with Telaya co-owner and head winemaker Earl Sullivan. Earl tells us all about what makes his winery unique to other Idaho winemakers and gives us a 101 course on why Idaho is becoming a better wine state and how he uses Idaho grapes as well as neighboring state grapes to create his delicious wines. 22 Nov 2024 | Episode 21 - Getting Loose in Meridian | 01:14:53
Our little baby is finally old enough to drink! In this 21st episode of the Idaho Booze Podcast, Loose Screw Beer Co. invites me out to their brand new flagship location in downtown Meridian to chop it up with me about all things Loose Screw. Owner Mike Garcia and his brew team, Marcos and Jake, talk about the beginnings of Loose Screw and how their lives are going to change with a shiny new brewery. We also talk about the special characteristics of the brewery itself, which is quite interesting. The audio is a little echoy and there’s construction noise, but I think we cleaned it up ok. I give you advice on how to make it through Thanksgiving with a couple of different scenarios and a couple of really nice batch cocktails that will brighten up your holiday. Then in Friday Night Pints, I review a bunch of Loose Screw beers plus the winter releases from Barbarian were announced, what to expect with those fun wintery wonders. It’s a great big episode of the Idaho Booze Podcast this week. Cheers! Gem State Manhattan * 12 ounces 1792 Bourbon * 6 Ounces sweet vermouth * 6 generous dashes of Warn Reserve Aromatic bitters * 3 ounces of water Measure out all the ingredients and funnel them into an empty bottle. Give them a good mix and taste it, adding bitters or vermouth if needed. Freeze for at least 3 hours, makes 6 drinks. (base recipe found here). Clarified Old Fashioned (Recipe from The Thirsty Whale) * 4 cups Koenig Caldwell Nights Rodeo 100 proof Whiskey * 6 oz House Made Syrups Barrel Aged Old Fashioned syrup * 2 big dashes Warn Reserve Aromatic Bitters * 1 cup water * 1 cup whole milk * Pinch of salt Pour everything into a bowl adding the milk last. Cover the bowl overnight. The next day you will see the milk has curdled. Strain out the milk using a couple of paper towels or a cheesecloth filter and pour your cocktail into an empty bottle. Once you’ve separated the milk curd from the cocktail, you just pour that over ice with an orange peel and cherry and you’re good to go. Should make 8-12 drinks. Idaho Cosmo * 12 ounces of 44 North Tangerine Vodka * 8 ounces triple sec * 4 ounces fresh lime juice * 1 ounce cranberry juice Pour all of that into an empty booze bottle, give it a mix, and taste for sweetness. Pour into chilled martini glasses with a cranberry and rosemary sprig for garnish. Makes 6 drinks. (base recipe can be found here) Follow Loose Screw on Facebook! Now Available on YouTube Podcasts! 13 Dec 2024 | Episode 23.5 - Going Back to Cali | 00:20:35
I really loved recording this episode, unfortunately, the audio came out pretty badly, so I went ahead and re-edited it down to just the nitty gritty about Bert’s beers and how they brew beer a little differently than other breweries in Idaho. It’s really interesting to hear about them talking about stuff that is happening now, but back in September or whenever we recorded this episode. Anyway, enjoy this half-episode and we’ll try to come back next week with a brand-new show. Now Available on YouTube Podcasts! Buy Tickets to North Idaho Beer Fest and Destination: Beer Here! 24 Jan 2025 | Episode 3 - Dairy-coli | 00:25:40
I am rolling solo on this episode of the Idaho Booze Podcast and I have a little to say about a lot. Darigold gets got for dumping shit water into the river and that got me thinking about what Agg gets away with compared to other Idaho businesses. Bob Huebbler from Boise Beer Culture released his Look Back on Idaho Beer for 2024, so I go over that and talk about what’s actually happening to cause the downturn in local breweries. Then I say goodbye to a friend of the show (she’s still alive, just leaving the Treasure Valley). Enjoy the pod on Substack, Spotify, Apple Pods, YouTube, and anywhere else you stream fine podcasts. 21 Feb 2025 | Tarif Talk Goes Mainstream + New Loose Screw Beers! | 00:44:14
I am all by my lonesome again for this week’s episode, so I talk about … me! The local media picked up on my Trump talk from last week’s show, so I did them one better and picked up their coverage of my story for my story this week. Sockeye decides to cut bait on its putt-putt golf course concept, what this means for one of Idaho’s biggest breweries. Loose Screw Brewing in Meridian invites me out to try their newly brewed beers … see if the flavor matches the shiny new brewery. Friday Night Pints includes some new beers to the market, but are the beers new or just the brewery? Then we look at the Boise Beer Buddies Community Calendar and find some fun stuff for you to do this weekend in Idaho. 28 Feb 2025 | Wandering Through a Lost Grove | 01:25:32
Jake Black is on the pod this week. He is the founder/big boss man at Lost Grove Brewing in Boise. This conversation was a lot of fun because I have known Jake for quite some time, and we have had many experiences in the craft beer world. We wandered through his journey starting Lost Grove that included him working at just about every restaurant in downtown Boise, plus Jake tells us about the fun and creative beer names and how he came up with those. Then we venture into some other topics including his recent TV appearances talking about Trump’s tariffs, just what the hell is going on at Woodland Empire, and we remember an old friend. Enjoy!
