It took us 27 episodes, but we finally got around to covering a John Wayne film, to Sam's delight! However, we're not looking at one of his classic westerns, but this drama/comedy/romance from 1952! John Ford saw the Quiet Man as his best film, and Maureen O'Hara considered it her favourite as well. Wayne, for his part, put it in the top 3. Regardless, this classic tale of a fallen boxer on a road to redemption by way of true love and family roots is a good one, and these much to discuss!

So, we are looking at war movies for the month of November, and we are starting off with a doozy! Combining the star power of Burt Lancaster and Clark Gable, AND the sublime directing of Robert Wise, this submarine film is a one of a kind viewing experience. Find out what Derek and Sam though about this one! Is this a classic example of "The Burt Lancaster Paradox"? Should you give it a watch? Does Sam love war movies more than she loves westerns? Ok, so let's set this one up for you: Humphrey Bogart in his best acting performance. John Huston finest film as a director. Walter Huston's Oscar-winning performance. Tim Holt in what is certainly the high water mark of his career. All together, we might just have one of the best adventure films ever made in the old Hollywood era. One of Derek's favourites, and a new viewing experience for Sam, have a listen and hear what they thought about this absolute gem of a motion picture!

If you are the sort of person that likes their sweet old ladies with a little bit of poison, their murders with a little bit of madcap, and their podcasts with a little bit of Sam and Derek, then this could be the episode for you. All-request July continues with a look at 1944's Arsenic and Old Lace, which is the sort of film that can cure what ails you! Our month-long look at romance films comes to an end with Derek and Sam sitting down to check out His Girl Friday, a film considered to be the greatest 'screwball comedy'! Alternately light and dark, farcical and dramatic, this cleverly written, directed, and acted film takes dialogue delivery to a whole other level and even set the record for the most works spoken per minute in a feature film. Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell knock it out of the park in the Howard Hawks film, which is objectively a great movie....but is it a great *romance* movie? Have a listen to hear what we thought!

Our month-long look at war movies continues, and for our Remembrance Day release, we are looking at the greatest anti-war film of all time, the 1930 version of All Quiet on the Western Front. Derek has seen this film many times over the years and has always wanted to watch it with Sam. This was her first viewing, and the impact is has on her is substantial. Join us for a close look at this timeless and endlessly relevant film, and if you've seen it, be sure to let us know what you think!

We continue our all-request month of January with a look at a film noir from the "decline" period of sometimes-polarizing and controversial actor George Raft. Raft's career took off like a rocket in the 1930's, but his lack of acting ability, apathy towards many projects, poor career choices, and affiliations with criminals led to a long decline. Was Johnny Allegro Raft's last great film, or just a pit stop on his way down? Have a listen and hear what we thought!

To close off our all-war movie month of November, we take a close look at the man that was a greater action hero in real life than most actors are in their movies. The legendary Audie Murphy and his autobiographical performance in To Hell and Back tell a tale of heroism, bravado, loyalty, and courage the likes of which have to be seen to be believed! The heroism was real, but is it a good movie? Listen and find out what we thought.

It's February, and in honour of Valentine's day and all the lovey-dovey, kissy-wissy, hanky-panky kind of stuff that accompanies it, the gang at ILOM is taking a look at some film romances! First up is this 1955 film, based on the autobiographical novel by Dr. Han Suyin. In this one you have the always great William Holden, the dubiously cast Jennifer Jones, and a magnificent tale of love against the sort of obstacles that are pretty hard to surmount. Oh, and you have THE SONG.  Have a listen, bring a box of kleenex, and let's have a time!

We wrap up our month-long look at film noir with The Blue Dahlia from 1946! Featuring the iconic noir pairing of Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake, this film was well-reviewed and well-received by audiences in it's day, buuuttttt....how does it hold up? You've probably heard of this film. You've probably heard its great. But is it? Raymond Chandler's first original screenplay was nominated for an Oscar, sure, yet room for some criticism of the narrative remains! Join Sam and Derek and they noir it up, one last time (for now!)....have a listen and hear what they thought of this film!

We continue our month long look at animation from the golden age of Hollywood with the second animated feature film, and the first non-Disney one...Gulliver's Travels from Fleischer Studios. An ambitious film that never quite achieved the artistic heights it aspired to, this film holds a special place in cinematic history nevertheless. What should have been the crowning achievement for the number two animation house in the business wound up being the first domino in a series that would eventually see the studio fall apart due to financial problems. And as weird a film as this can be upon viewing, just always remember...it could have starred Popeye. We bring our all request month of July to a close with a look at a Marx Brothers film! The Brothers are Sam's favourites, so we picked once of their best to watch and share our thoughts with you on! A Night at the Opera was the first Marx Brother's film made for MGM and really was a turning point in many ways for their act. But were all the changes for the better? Happy September everyone! We welcome the school year back with a new episode, this time looking at something fun! Buck Privates was only the second film Abbott and Costello appeared in, but it was their first true "starring" vehicle for the duo. This movie brings the laughs as well as some incredible music numbers by The Andrews Sisters! This film is a comedy classic...but is its reputation earned? Or is it's reputation better than the on screen results? Have a listen and hear what we thought!

So, what do you say about one of the greatest films of all time? Especially when it's also one of your favourites? And you're doing a month on film noir and this is the best one ever made? All horror month October continues with Sam and Derek taking a look at the first werewolf feature film, predating The Wolf Man by 6 years! Imagine a time when movie goers had little to no idea what a werewolf WAS let alone what all it's rules and lore were. That's the world that Werewolf of London was released into, and while this film wasn't the hit that Universal wanted, it did blaze a trail, setting the standards for this cinematic creature type that are still followed today! Definitely check this one out!

The second of our two-part look at the final two Frankenstein solo films of the the classic Universal era. Join Derek and Sam as they get into Lon Chaney Jr., and try to make sense of the patchwork logic of this film's script!

It's our 40th episode and that means something special! This time, we are first going to take a look back at the 18 films we watched in Season Two and put them in a ranked order from our least to most favourite! Where will your favourite end up? Have a listen and find out! And THEN, we continue our look at the animation classics of the golden age with a discussion of the Fleischer Studios series of Superman shorts form the early 1940's. Happy 2022! It's January, and that means our long-anticipate all-request month of shows is here. When three hugely popular episodes of Walt Disney's Disneyland TV show were spliced together to create a film for cinematic release, one wonders if anyone thought this would be too much Davy Crockett. Well, as it turns out, in 1955, there was no such thing as Davy Crockett! A mythical character, brought perfectly to life by Fess Parker, Davy was the quintessential post-war, pre-Elvis hero! But how does this film hold up today? And more importantly, do we recommend a watch on this one? Have a listen and hear what we thought!

We wrap up our month-long look at animated films with the first animated feature produced by the British Film Industry, Animal Farm. Funded in part by the CIA , the anti-totalitarian messages from the George Orwell book at brought vividly, almost gruesomely, to life by the husband-wife animation team of Halas-Batchelor. Intended as propaganda cloaked as entertainment, how does this film stack up as a piece of work on its own merits? We aren't going to try to unpack all of the themes of the source material here, just evaluate the film on it's own merits. Based on a novel inspired by a real life insurance scam murder, Double Indemnity presents like a textbook on how to make a noir...everything you want is here!! It's July, and as promised we are back with a month of listener requests! This one is a big one, so let's start off with a bang with a true all-time classic, 1939's The Wizard of Oz!! What more needs be said? Have a listen and hear what we thought!

We jump with two feet into our month-long look at western movies, beginning with a film that didn't' quite meet it's goals of being an epic classic, 1960's The Unforgiven! There's a lot to unpack with this one, including a troubled production, an unhappy cast and crew, and the end of HHL as a production company. Is this film a flawed masterpiece, or a poorly assembled collection of talent that really missed the mark? Have a listen and hear what we have to say!

Special note! The version we watched of this film was on Amazon Prime (Canada) and was a horrible transfer, showing lots of decay and a horrible pan'n'scan job that really affected the aspect ratio. Sam and Derek were both pretty critical of the cinematography, and certainly the quality of the transfer we saw GREATLY impacted our viewing experience, and the visual appeal of the film.

How we ever got 34 episodes in without looking at a Gregory Peck film is beyond me, but we make up for it in style, with discuss the incredible 1948 western Yellow Sky.  A film that is beautifully shot, almost thematically a film noir, and driven by a fantastic script, this is the sort of western that could turn you on to the whole genre. We had a lot to say about this one, so sit back and enjoy! This is the last film of all-Western March, and we might have saved the best for last.

We start a new theme month....It's all-adventure April...with 1956's Moby Dick, which for many is the definitive film version of Melville's novel. With some nifty effects, a fantastic supporting cast, and a climactic action scene that will get your blood pumping, this is a movie that deserves a look. But is it a great adaptation of it's source material, or is it better thought of as a standalone film? Have a listen and hear what Derek and Sam thought!

Ok, so quick question: What's your favourite western? A lot of people might pick Unforgiven, or The Searchers, or The Magnificent Seven, and honestly, those are all fantastic choices. But....this brilliant little gem of a film belongs in any discussion of great western films!  It's got some star power, an amazing cast, a riveting storyline, and a beautiful use of slow burn pacing. It's the sort of film that stays with you, and makes you ache in all the right ways. Have a listen and hear what we thought of it, as well as a fantastic cold open by Sam where she tells the tale an epic day from her childhood. This episode's a good one, so enjoy!

Looking for an interesting film to discuss, Sam and Derek might have accidently chosen one of the most influential of all time! What the didn't expect, when delving into this peerless classic, was the disgust with the writers at the final production of their script and of the heavy duty Nazi affiliation of it's star! Check this one out for sure, if for no other reason than to hear hapless pronunciations of German film titles, and Sam get tricked in to saying the word "somnambulist" over and over and over.
