24 Mar 2023 | Following a Creative Path: Art & Mental Illness with Artist Nicole Lau | 00:39:32
This week, The Works member and artist Nicole Lau is joining me to talk about her journey breaking through her mental health struggles to create a thriving professional art practice. Nicole Lau (b.1992) is a Canada-born Chinese artist currently living and working in Vancouver, British Columbia. As an early career artist established in 2021, Nicole works between Chinese brush and Western oil painting techniques, heavily influenced by her mentors. She is a grant recipient of the 2022 Research and Creation award and 2022 Professional Development award through The Canada Council for the Arts. In 2022, Lau held her solo exhibition “Home Kong” at Matchstick Davie, and participated in a group exhibition titled “Together” at the National Housing Conference in Vancouver, BC. In 2023, Lau will be a part of a group exhibition titled “The Body: Object, Product, Agency” in New York City, NY. Nicole’s practice informs her of her own personal dystopia as she navigates this world with a diagnosis of borderline personality and bipolar disorder. Nicole investigates contemporary issues that involve the acculturation of Chinese immigrants, understanding her internal landscape, and celebrating her history and Chinese identity as a Canadian artist.

12 May 2023 | Mike Ousley: Appalachian Narratives as Contemporary Art | 00:35:44
American born painter Mike Ousley paints a direct commentary on Appalachian life and folk traditions, though their simplicity belies their depth. Ousley has painted since childhood, and though trained (MFA, University of Cincinnati), he foils Western European traditions with the folk style of his youth. Having grown up in a small coal town in Southeastern Kentucky listening to stories told by friends and family, he credits the visionary artists and rich heritage of the region as his primary influence. Recent exhibitions include Nine Lives at Fortnight Institute, NY; From These Hills at the William King Museum of Art, VA, curated by Michael Rooks; and, Something on the Wind at Morehead State University, Morehead, KY. His work was featured in ArtMaze Magazine Issue 22, selected by Fabiola Alondra and Jane Harmon. Ousley has been a resident at the Huntington Museum of Art, studying with Alfred Leslie; Arc of Appalachia; and, North Mountain. His work can be found in numerous private collections, as well as public collections. Mike joins me in this episode to talk about his background and upbringing has influenced his work as an artist. 31 Mar 2023 | Forging a Way: Art & Growth with Artist Holly Wong | 00:42:10
Holly Wong lives and works in San Francisco, California. She was educated at the San Francisco Art Institute where she graduated with a Master of Fine Arts with a concentration in New Genres. Holly creates installations and assemblages, integrating non-traditional approaches with more traditional sewing techniques associated with the history of women. She has been awarded visual arts grants from the Integrity: Arts and Culture Association, Barbara Deming Memorial fund, the George Sugarman Foundation, the Puffin Foundation, and a Gerbode Foundation purchase award. She has had over 70 group exhibitions and 10 solo exhibitions. She is represented by SLATE Contemporary Gallery in Oakland, California, ELLIO Fine Art Gallery in Houston, TX, and is a member of A.I.R. Gallery in Brooklyn, New York. "My work reclaims the female body and bears witness to the spirit. I create fiber and drawing based installations, assemblages and works on paper to remember my mother whom I lost to alcoholism and domestic violence. These works range in size from intimate pieces to larger immersive works. I use a variety of fabric and flexible drawing surfaces as my medium, applying the skills passed down to me from my mother who was a talented seamstress. The sexual violence we both experienced in our lives led to a self-loathing of my body, cultivating the anorexia and mental illness I struggled with as a young woman. Now, I stitch and draw as a journey towards wholeness, both for myself and for my mother’s memory. I started to work with fiber installation in 2017. I became attracted to working with light, reflective, transparent fabrics because it reminds me of the permeable separation between the living and the dead. In my recent series “quilt suspensions,” I use a flat felled seam technique with transparent fabric. I combine these ephemeral materials with LED strip lighting and diffusion film as a proxy for my mother’s spirit. The layers of pieced fabric are suspended over this light-spirit as a shroud or mourning cloth. Inspired by Chinese funeral customs, the quilt layers become burial blankets that are offered by the children of the deceased and layered upon their loved ones. A major throughline in my work is the wound or scar and the power of taking back the night by healing the scar. Creating works of beauty in brokenness is my highest act of resistance."

15 Dec 2023 | Working with Metal, Form and Light: Artist Gina Herrera | 00:43:16
Born in 1969, Gina Herrera was raised in Chicago and currently resides in California. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art Education from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In the course of her studies, she was deployed overseas in support of several war contingencies with the United States Army. While serving in Iraq, miles of mountainous trash heaps amidst the devastation of combat galvanized a life-long love of nature into an activist’s calling. Her art practice evolved to lessen her environmental footprint, and to consciously channel Mother Earth in a spiritual and aesthetic ritual drawing from her personal affinity to nature as well as her Tesuque and Costa Rican heritage. Once her final tour was complete, she obtained her Master of Fine Arts from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Herrera has received fellowships and grants and residencies from The Harpo Foundation/Vermont Studio Center, Virginia Center for the Arts, Hambidge Center, Ox-Bow, Peripheral Arts Foundation, Ruth and Harold Chenven Foundation, Puffin Foundation, Kasini House Artist Lab in conjuction with 516 Arts and the Albuquerque Museum and Self Help Graphics In 2022, she participated in the Conversations in Practice Online Residency at Ox-bow, and received a grant from the Demil Art Fund for Veterans. In 2023, she was a National Endowment for the Humanities Veteran Fellow, participating in Surviving the Long Wars 2023 Veteran’s Art Summit, where her work was on display at the Chicago Cultural Center. Most recently, she was awarded the California Arts Council Established Artists Grant. She is currently creating and exhibiting work in galleries around the country, as well as exploring avenues for creating larger scale permanent public art projects, to bring her message of environmental mindfulness to even more people. Her first temporary public art installation was in residence at the Valencia Town Center in Santa Clarita, CA for the first four months of 2016, and from 2017-2019 an installation was on display at the South Bend Museum in South Bend, Indiana. In 2022, her work was featured on an episode of Bel-Air on the Peacock Network. Herrera’s dedication to service extends to all aspects of her professional life – from her almost 25 years in the United States Military to educating and inspiring the next generation as an art teacher at Arvin High School and adjunct professor at Bakersfield College. "As an artist of Native American (Tesuque Pueblo) and Costa Rican heritage, I embark on a spiritual journey of self-knowledge and reflection on the planet’s uncertain future. Through my art, I utilize natural materials and organic forms, such as branches, rocks, cocoons, and nests, as a juxtaposition to industrialization and environmental damage, symbolizing the somatic process of creation. Drawing from my experiences during my 25 years in the Armed Forces, where I witnessed the long-term effects of conflict and war, including the large-scale abandonment of ruined machinery by the military, I question my own practices and environmental impact. My artistic practice is deeply informed by my passion for environmental justice and involves spiritual and aesthetic rituals to honor Mother Earth. I engineer unexpected assemblages using metals and found materials, repurposing salvaged materials like plastics, fabrics, jewelry, domestic tools, bottle caps, and military insignia. The resulting sculptures are human-like yet mysterious and fluid, reminiscent of calligraphy or hieroglyphics. Dark humor and violent beauty are juxtaposed with a post-apocalyptic industrial energy through techniques such as welding, powder-coating, and plasma cutting. Like a scavenger, I play an active role in removing garbage from the landscape, preventing further damage. My artistic process is intuitive, letting the forms reveal themselves. Through my art, I aim to awaken individual and societal consciousness, examining and healing our relationship with Mother Earth. Herrera’s dedication to service extends to all aspects of her professional life – from her almost 25 years in the United States Military to educating and inspiring the next generation as an art teacher at Arvin High School and adjunct professor at Bakersfield College." 30 Sep 2022 | Documenting Freedmen's Towns with Artist Letitia Huckaby | 00:37:16
Texas based photographer and artist Letitia Huckaby joins me today to talk about her multimedia artwork that combines both photography and textiles to depict family narratives and African American history.
Letitia Huckaby has a degree in Journalism from the University of Oklahoma, a BFA from the Art Institute of Boston in photography and her Master’s degree from the University of North Texas in Denton. Huckaby has exhibited as an emerging artist at Phillips New York, the Tyler Museum of Art, The Studio School of Harlem, Renaissance Fine Art in Harlem curated by Deborah Willis, PhD, The McKenna Museum in New Orleans, the Camden Palace Hotel in Cork City, Ireland, and the Texas Biennial at Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum. Her work is included in several prestigious collections; the Library of Congress, the McNay Art Museum, the Art Museum of Southeast Texas, the Brandywine Workshop in Philadelphia, and the Samella Lewis Contemporary Art Collection at Scripps College in Claremont, California. Huckaby was a featured artist in MAP2020: The Further We Roll, The More We Gain at the Amon Carter Museum and State of the Art 2020 at Crystal Bridges Museum. Ms. Huckaby was a Fall 2020 Art Pace Artist in Residence and is represented by the Talley Dunn Gallery in Dallas. Ms. Huckaby is the Co-Founder of Kinfolk House, a collaborative project space that inhabits a 100-year-old historic home, where community and art converge in the predominantly Black and Latina/e/o neighborhood of Polytechnic in Fort Worth, Texas and she is Texas Artist of the Year 2022.
“This project documents two residential blocks. One block is located in Tulsa, Oklahoma on Haskell Place in a neighborhood adjoining historic Greenwood. The 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre desecrated the Greenwood neighborhood—one of the most prosperous African American communities in the early 20th century. The other residential block is located on St. Charles Street in the town of Greenwood, Mississippi—the namesake of the district in Tulsa and the birthplace of my father. For this project I traveled to both locations, documented these city blocks, and framed them together as a way to visually tie the two locations together. The images are printed onto cotton fabric and framed in embroidery hoops hinged together, to speak to the bifold frames people displayed of loved ones in their homes. At its most basic level, this project is about home and connectedness. The work speaks to the desire for a people to build a home of their own, the struggles that hinder the “American Dream” for far too many of its citizens, and a present nostalgia (living in a state that is linked heavily to the past).”

15 Apr 2022 | Psychology of the Landscape: Artist Julie Himel | 01:11:22
Julie Himel received a Diploma of Fine Art from Langara College, Vancouver, BC; a BFA Honours Degree from York University, Toronto, ON, and a Graduate Diploma from the Toronto School of Art, Toronto, ON. Her work has been exhibited across North America, including recently being featured in digital exhibitions with Visionary Projects, New York, NY; and the TD Thor Wealth Management Juried Exhibition: Quest for the Environment, Quest Art, Midland, ON. Himel’s paintings are part of private collections across the world and public collections including The University of Calgary, Calgary, AB; Westfield State University, Westfield, MA; the Armenian Centre Art Collection Canada, Toronto, ON and several corporate collections. Julie lives and works in Toronto.
Julie Himel's vivid paintings push the genre of landscape into dreamlike abstractions. Her newest works present an experiential portrait of human interaction with the natural world during this environmentally complex time. Man made structures, anthropogenic traces, and unnatural light sources become part of the view, through dream and memory-scapes that question time and connection to nature. A nod to the beautiful that inevitably unfolds as the environment adapts to human intervention.

03 Feb 2023 | Feminist Ceramics with Jen Dwyer | 00:44:25
Jen Dwyer grew up on the West Coast, in the Bay Area, California and currently lives and works on the East Coast, between Connecticut and New York. Her playful ceramic sculptures, paintings and otherworldly installations evoke dreams, fantasy, and the desire to escape to a world of one’s own creation. Through her artwork, Dwyer creates a uniquely powerful, caring, and intimate feminine world, underscored by the artist’s study of Paleolithic talismans, the decadent Rococo aesthetic, and contemporary girlhood culture and ecofeminism. Dwyer received a BFA in Ceramics, BA in Environmental Studies and a minor in Art History from University of Washington. She finished her MFA in the Spring of 2019 from University of Notre Dame where she received a Full Fellowship in Ceramics with a Gender Studies Minor. Dwyer has partaken in many residencies and fellowships, including the Pottery Center in Jingdezhen, China; fellowship at Wassaic Projects and the Museum of Art and Design Studio Residency. Recent exhibitions include the Spring/Break Art Fair in New York City, Maxon Mills Gallery in Wassaic, the Snite Museum, at Notre Dame, a solo exhibition in Manhattan, NY at Dinner Gallery as well as recent and upcoming group exhibition at Hashimoto Contemporary Gallery, Gaa Gallery and Jeff Marfa Gallery. "The Female Gaze is an alternative way of seeing that represents everyone as a subject and acknowledges that people have their own complicated narratives. With this idea in mind Jen Dwyer constructs fanciful, porcelain vessels and sculptures that merge iconography from prehistoric imagery, (such as the Venus of Willendorf, which was thought to be a self portrait of the artist), with the Rococo Aesthetic, infused with contemporary feminist themes. Dwyer create an amalgamation of ceramic sculpture and oil paintings to examine contemporary socially constructed notions of identity by invoking the female gaze. The Female Gaze, coined by Jill Soloway, was created in response to Laura Mulvey’s theorization of “the Male Gaze,” which is when cinematic depictions of women are seen as objects of male pleasure. The Female Gaze is an alternative way of seeing; a way of looking/representing that seeks to give everyone agency and make everyone a subject. Rococo art was created in reaction to boredom with the serious baroque style, and instead opted to depict humor, wit, emotion, and whimsy. Characterized by its light-heartedness, the Rococo presents itself at a more intimate scale, often in private spaces. I aim to create other worldly Installations, filled with my ceramic sculptures, to blur the barriers between the private and public, subject and object and self and others." Links:

13 Oct 2023 | Artist Karen Lederer: Painting, Printmaking and Patterns | 00:34:27
Karen Lederer received her BFA in Printmaking and Drawing from Washington University in St. Louis in 2008 and an MFA in Printmaking from Rhode Island School of Design in 2012. She has been an artist in residence at Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop, Lower East Side Printshop, and the Sharpe-Walentas Studio Program. Lederer has presented her work in solo exhibitions at Morgan Lehman Gallery, Cheymore Gallery, One River School, Guilford College Art Gallery, Tennis Elbow at The Journal Gallery, Grant Wahlquist Gallery, and Field Projects. She has participated in many group exhibitions, most recently at Morgan Lehman Gallery, Deanna Evans Projects, Dinner Gallery, Cristea Roberts Gallery, and Hashimoto Contemporary.
“Trained to be a printmaker, Karen Lederer brings monoprinting techniques into a contemporary painting practice. She offsets inked plates onto the surface of her artwork and then defines the rest of the image with paint. Both flat and rendered, the work conveys a spatial disorientation that denies stability. By mixing diverse processes in each piece, she creates environments that are at once constructed and artificial, yet private and personal. Lederer invites the viewer into domestic scenes filled with patterns, color and references to her life and art history. In a moment where people live simultaneously in the physical world and online, her paintings evoke the strange filter through which we see much of our reality.”

28 Oct 2022 | Believing in Your Work with Jaylen Pigford | 00:35:32
Jaylen Pigford was born in 1996 and is an Afro-Latino painter born and raised in Corpus Christi and based in Houston, Texas. He’s a self-taught artist and has been creating artwork since childhood. His paintings are autobiographical reflections on past negative experiences and adversity to tell stories of self-growth through uplifting works on canvas. Jaylen sees his work as a balance of light and dark, the good with the bad. “We all struggle and our failures test us, but it's what action we take to correct them that matters most.”
“Like many before me, I use skulls in my work to represent mortality and that we are all human and equal. Similar to the Renaissance painter's fascination with Memento Mori. The skull is a symbolic reminder of death's inevitability and belief that earthly possessions and achievements are fleeting. I also draw inspiration from my heritage and the cultural tradition of Dia De Los Muertos. In my paintings, I put a twist on the decorative calaveras, calacas (skulls, skeletons), and vibrant, bold, colorful motifs used to honor our ancestors. I feel that whether we accept it or not, death inspires everyone. Knowing that your time is limited encourages you to strive to reach your goals and live your best life.”
In this interview, Jaylen talks about how he developed a passion for art from a young age, how he’s been able to grow his career and how he’s been able to find inspiration in his struggles and life experiences.

01 Apr 2022 | Fiber & Form: Artist Jamie Linn Powell | 01:01:47
Jamie Powell was born in Fairmont, West Virginia 30 miles south of the Mason Dixon Line to a family of farmers and factory workers. Her Appalachian roots encouraged a culture of reuse, repurposing, patching and stitching. She has an interest in exploring the boundaries of what paintings can be through a highly experimental process of dying, braiding, weaving, stitching and staining raw canvas. Intimate feminine domestic gestures become grand moments in her paintings. Oversized and out of control bows pull away from the stretcher.... the braided canvas falls to the floor. These paintings become physical three-dimensional objects. The scale references the body, the size of a head, the torso, or outstretched arms. Influences range from Robert Rauschenberg to Jessica Stockholder, from Arte Povera to Pattern and Decoration movements, from Formalism to Feminism.
She has exhibited extensively over the last twelve years including: Soil Gallery in Seattle, David & Schweitzer and Fresh Window in Brooklyn, Freight + Volume and Morgan Lehman in New York. She has received grants from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, Vermont Studio Center and Pratt Institute. She is a faculty member at Pratt Institute and a Teaching Artist for the Studio in a School Foundation as well as co-teaches the Lincoln Center Summer Intensive Boot Camp.
In this most recent body of work Jamie has returned to her rural roots exploring landscape with a deepening dive into spirituality, where she is mining the personal while surfing the ethereal.
Currently, she lives and works in Queens, New York.

23 Dec 2022 | Meaning in the Process with Artist Sarah Fairchild | 00:31:36
Sarah Fairchild is a mixed media artist concerned about our environment, creating and representing natural forms through a synthetic lens. Her work depicts the common and often ignored forms of weeds and wild flowers; recently, pollinators and other beneficial insects have crept into her work, creating a two-dimensional insectarium that depicts the interconnection of species, the fragility of our ecosystems, as well as a reverence for nature and all its inhabitants. She hopes considering these commonplace forms in a new and unusual way will arouse a sense of wonder, appreciation and concern for the environment, as well as the urgent need for a sustainable living planet. Recent commissions include Bloom, a temporary three dimensional abstract bouquet installed inside the lobby of One Liberty Plaza, New York City; Floribunda, a two-part temporary installation adapted from an original painting on the exterior and three original mixed media artworks inside the lobby at One Pierrepont Plaza in Brooklyn; Cruciferous, a temporary installation adapted from two original paintings, adorned the lobby of the Grace Building in New York City; set and prop design for Opera Columbus’ production of Lully’s Armide; and a large-scale wallpaper installation at the Columbus School for Girls. Recent publications include New American Paintings, International Painting Annual, and her work is included in several public and private collections including the Columbus Museum of Art and the Pizzuti Collection. "I am a mixed media artist concerned about our environment, creating and representing natural forms through a synthetic lens. Themes in my work straddle the realms of fashion and the natural world, while playing with the ideas of decoration, beauty, sensuality and questions regarding the handmade versus the mass produced. My work depicts the common and often ignored forms of weeds and wild flowers; recently, pollinators and other beneficial insects have crept into the work, creating a two-dimensional insectarium that depicts the interconnection of species, the fragility of our ecosystems, as well as a reverence for nature and all its inhabitants. 25 Nov 2022 | Telling Your Story with Artist Gabe Langholtz | 00:43:20
Gabe Langholtz was born in 1971 and is an American painter, living and working in Austin Texas. His work, although primarily representational, is indebted to American Color Field painting, focusing on color relations, pattern making, form and line, with a heavy emphasis on the two-dimensional surface of the canvas. In the tradition of folk art, Langholtz routinely employs the use of mundane cultural objects and / or activities to establish a contemporary narrative, oftentimes drawing on humor, parody, and pastiche as tools for social commentary.
His work has been featured in New American Paintings and Create! Magazine, and exhibited nationally at Hashimoto Contemporary, Los Angeles, CA, San Francisco, CA, and New York, NY, BravinLee Programs, New York, NY, The Painting Center, New York, NY, and Bowery Gallery, New York, NY. Langholtz is influenced by the work of Mary Fedden, Philip Guston, Agnes Martin and Gary Bunt, while folk art and collage heavily inform his distinctive style.

29 Sep 2023 | Painter Stephanie Pierce: Impossible to Capture-Light & Time in Paintings | 00:43:56
Stephanie Pierce’s paintings explore relationships between light, time, and perception as it is reconsidered over time. Stephanie's work has been exhibited at The Henry Art Gallery, Seattle; The Staten Island Museum, NY; and Asheville Art Museum, NC. Her work is represented by Jupiter Contemporary in Miami, Alpha Gallery in Boston and Steven Harvey Fine Art Projects in NYC. Stephanie received a Peter S. Reed Foundation Grant in 2018 and a Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant in 2014. Her work has been published in the New Yorker Magazine, Harper’s Magazine, and is included in the collections of William Dreyfus, and Joan and Roger Sonnabend among others. Stephanie's upcoming solo exhibition, Simple Pleasures, will be at Jupiter Contemporary, Miami, in October 2023. Stephanie is an Assistant Professor of Painting at the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
“My most recent body of work consists of paintings centered around indulging what can be loved within my day-to-day experience. An intimate world is presented by way of sustained consideration and a reflection of light, time, and shifting perception. These kaleidoscopic paintings record ongoing transitions that crystalize an emotional light and often verge on the hallucinatory.”

14 Apr 2023 | Awe Instead of Fear: Clay & Permaculture with Artist Roxanne Swentzell | 00:40:51
Roxanne Swentzell was born in 1962 in Taos New Mexico. She is a member of the Native American Tribe, Santa Clara Pueblo. Growing up within an artist family allowed Roxanne to naturally take up her mother's clay and start sculpting at a very early age. Due to a speech impediment as a child, Swentzell found that she could sculpt what she was feeling in clay and communicate in this manner. She continued speaking through clay even after she learned to talk in words. In high school, Swentzell was allowed to go to the Institute of American Indian Arts for classes and had her first one person show at age 17. She went on to the Portland Museum Art School. In 2003, Roxanne opened The Roxanne Swentzell Tower Gallery in Pojoaque New Mexico. In 2015, Roxanne Swentzell was given an Honorary Doctorate Degree from the Institute of American Indian Arts. Swentzell has shown throughout the world and has permanent pieces in the National Museum of the American Indian Smithsonian D.C., British Art Museum, Museum of Wellington, NZ, The Heard Museum in AZ, Denver Art Museum, and the Santa fe Convention Center. She has won many awards at the Santa Fe Indian Market and Heard Museum Art Guild, along with being given the New Mexico Governor's Award for excellence in the Arts, and becoming a Native Treasure. Roxanne continues to create artwork and run a non-profit, Flowering Tree Permaculture Institute, working to inspire and nurture communities based on indigenous ways of knowing. " With my work, I want to communicate with others through our common human language, emotions. Making art that means something matters to me because every action effects everything else." Links:

31 Dec 2021 | Why Being an Artist is Harder than Being in Other Industries | 00:16:17
What makes the art industry distinct from other industries? How does this create distortion in our industry? How does Netvvrk, the membership program I run, offer a correction to this problem? Every other industry works like this: You create a product that responds to a customers needs or desires, and you sell that product at a price that pays for your labor and reflects what the market will bear. The fine art industry works like this: You create a completely individualized and idiosyncratic work of art, with exorbitant labor costs and little relationship to what a customer wants. Then you give it a price point that exceeds what most people in your income bracket can afford. You already know this. You also know that you can't succeed if you treat the industry as completely different than others. It's unique, yes. But if you decide you don't need to set goals, identify ideal viewers, and communicate clearly about your art, you'll never gain enough visibility to secure the commissions, grants, and shows of your dreams. You also can't succeed if you treat the industry the same as any other. If you treat your business the same as selling shoes, you're not going to be talking to your ideal viewers, and no one will take you seriously and you won't be able to secure the commissions, grants, and shows of your dreams. (A good example of this is artists who sign up for services that offer templated social media advice based on what works for other industries, and claim this will ensure you'll sell stuff.) So, how do you get what you want? In the art world, it's all about relationships. Relationships bring us opportunities and connect us to the people we need to meet to advance our careers. That's why I started netvvrk, which is a business networking site for mid-career artists that offers professional development services so you can leverage the network you're a part of. Our members have shaped netvvrk. It's built on generosity and kindness, and propelled by the seriousness of our members.

04 Mar 2022 | Pop Culture and Symbolism: Artist Britty Em | 00:48:04
Britty Em is an Australian International selling artist, who works mainly in large scale acrylic paintings. Charming audiences with her colorful and playful portraits of iconic women, and everyday objects dressed up in opulent patterns and symbolism, the work takes audiences on a journey through the seemingly familiar, yet extraordinary.
Britty Em integrates both concept and color to create crisp clean work that infuses elements of graphic design, pop culture and fashion. Her works clearly demonstrate influences from her formal education in both Fine Art and Architectural studies, presenting structure and balance.
She is currently represented by 19 Karen Gallery and Gallery Red.
“Working with acrylic on canvas, I paint the ordinary in an extraordinary setting. I find it artistically liberating to bring out the whimsical in everyday objects, enticing the viewer to reflect on the unassuming yet charming environment around them. My most recent work leans towards the concepts of escapism, loneliness and consumerism that we as a society are led to believe is always an increasing goal, and that our happiness fundamentally depends on obtaining material possessions or something outside of ourselves. In moments of hardship we tend to be overindulgent in an attempt to satisfy our insatiable urges, seeking solace in sugary treats and designer goods. Birds are a totem throughout the work as a creature that is often lured by shiny objects, not unlike human beings, which begs the question “Is this act of consumerism really that unnatural?” The work has further been exploring the corner or rooms where isolated objects, in particular chairs, are the focal point. The room poses questions about who sat in the chair, what room is this? What is going on outside the canvas? There is a sense of unknowingness yet familiarity. A doorway into another reality.”

10 Nov 2023 | Finding Community and Flexibility: Artist Mother Jordan Buschur | 00:51:28
Jordan Buschur is an artist, educator, and curator based in Toledo, Ohio. Her paintings focus on collections of objects ranging from stacked books to interiors of drawers, all united by a system of value based on mystery, sentimentality, and a matriarchal connection. Buschur received an M.F.A. in Painting from Brooklyn College, the City University of New York. Her work has been shown in numerous locations, including exhibitions with the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts (Grand Rapids, MI), Center for Book Arts (NYC), and Field Projects (NYC). She participated in residencies at the Wassaic Project, Chashama North, the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts, and the Vermont Studio Center. Awards include the Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award and the Kimmel Foundation Artist Award. Her work has been featured in print in New American Paintings and UPPERCASE Magazine, and online with The Jealous Curator, Young Space, and BOOOOOOOM, among many others. She is a co-founder of Co-Worker Gallery and has curated exhibitions at Cuchifritos Gallery + Project Space (NYC), Spring/Break Art Show (NYC), and the Neon Heater (Findlay, Ohio). Buschur was the Director of the Eisentrager-Howard Gallery at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln and currently teaches drawing at the University of Toledo. "My paintings imply a human presence through depictions of accumulated collections. Contents of desk drawers, stacks of books, packed boxes, and objects on display, are united by systems of value shaped by mystery, sentimentality, and the matriarchal connection. Each painting focuses on the oscillation between personal resonance and public view, reality and invention, fixed meaning and open interpretation. I’m interested in the assignment of non-monetary significance onto objects as an inherently interior and idiosyncratic act. In this way, the paintings are portraits as I meditate on the details (both mundane and magical) of the accumulated stuff of friends and family (and my own things too). Simultaneously, the collections point towards the material weight of modern life, the anxiety of consumption, and the endgame of anonymous personal effects. Looking through the lens of inheritance, accumulations of sentimental objects can link to ancestors, while also becoming a burden of junk. A well loved thing, so deeply felt by one, shapeshifts in meaning when passed to a new owner and generation."

27 May 2022 | Mythology of Motherhood: Deborah Wasserman | 01:05:48
Deborah Wasserman was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, grew up in Tel Aviv, Israel, and currently resides in Queens, New York, one of the most diverse counties in the US. She is a graduate of the California Institute of the Arts, the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program, Artists in the Marketplace at the Bronx Museum of the Arts, and received two fellowships from Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. She has exhibited in the United States, at the Queens Museum of the Arts, Bronx Museum of the Arts, White Columns, Pierogi 2000, Socrates Sculpture Park, Jonathan Ferrara Gallery, and A.I.R. Gallery. Internationally, she has shown in Brazil, the Netherlands, Germany, and Israel. Wasserman has been the recipient of grants from the Experimental Television Center, Aljira Center for the Arts, New York Foundation for the Arts, The Puffin Foundation, and the Citizens Committee for NY. She has also received a Su Casa Award from the NYS Department of Cultural Affairs every year since 2015. In 2021 she was invited to attend Aunt Karen’s Farm residency, and in 2020 she was a Finalist for the NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship in the category of Printmaking/Drawing/Book Arts.
"Throughout my life I’ve been a nomad and seeker. Painting landscapes is my way of deepening and extending my roots, reorganizing my travels, and interpreting nature. I am partially an imprint of indigenous lands and a creator of my own terrain. Born in Brazil, I was raised in the war-torn coasts of the Middle East. I live with collective narratives of roaming those shared grounds. The landscape is our body: our forebear, our womb, our origin and destination. I paint the Earth to capture the world and use pigment to create my chosen native land. It breathes with me as I work. My process entails layering, pouring, dripping, spilling, erasure, and mark-making. I transform surfaces and images as they emerge and solidify, then alter again as the piece is molded, exposing the rich soil of the under-paint. My impulses to both destroy and create are visible. Motherhood has taught me patience and the ability to see the earth in all its complex fertility. I travel with the canvas. From stained rags and torn discarded clothing there is an alchemical suggestion of women’s lives: their labor, abandonment, and recycled life and matter. My work alludes to the inner body and its paths and quests; it combines abstraction, and magical realism. Cracked, flooded and hybridized landforms in multiple climates are collective tales of migration in all their tragic and uplifting moments. Sunken houses, tent-specked mountains, cairns and rubble, wrecked trees, fauna and flora appear in flattened or skewed perspectives. Trees can be anchors, and a prickly pear grows in snow. Conflict, renewal, and repair are synergistic."

02 Feb 2024 | Artist Mothers and Education in the Arts with Artist Jennifer Combe | 00:39:01
Jennifer Combe is a mother, artist, and associate professor of art at The University of Montana. Before shifting to higher education, she taught K12 in Washington State public schools for fifteen years. Her artwork investigates gender, contemporary mothering, and children’s development. Her visual work has been exhibited at The Missoula Art Museum, Holter Museum of Art, Paris Gibson Square Museum of Art, The Gift Shop exhibition space at The Henry Art Gallery in Seattle, the NAEA gallery in Virginia, and The Washington State Center for Performing Arts. Her work is featured in the book An Artist and a Mother, published by Demeter Press. Her work in art education spans early childhood education, community arts, and social theory. Her educational work has been featured in The Journal of Social Theory in Art Education, The Journal of the Motherhood Initiative for Research and Community Involvement, The Journal of Cultural Research in Art Education, and Visual Arts Research. She has lectured for The National Art Education Association in New York, Chicago, San Diego, Dallas/Fort Worth and New Orleans. She lectured on mothering and art education in Florence, Italy for The Motherhood Initiative on Research and Community Involvement. She lives outside of Missoula, MT with her family. "My research and artistic work explore cultural constructs around gender and mothering, ability, and schooling. Drawing from autobiography, I locate the essence of an experience and then distill my understanding of that experience into simplified, often geometric, forms. This process helps deconstruct cultural paradigms that complicate interpretation and meaning—ultimately how we perceive ourselves. Working in the studio involves a form of meditation and contemplative translation of experiences and anxieties through the direct process of applying paint or fabric to various surfaces such as glass, panel, linen, or paper. Non-objective abstraction allows an ambient space for the ambiguities of memory and the tumult of emotion to be freely realized. Often working in multiples, I process experiences in singular works and then rejoin the simplified forms to make a complex, yet fleeting whole. My hope is to claim control over the ambiguities of experience and emotion, if even for a moment."

As stated on DC Moore's website: Visually-striking and intricate, Fueki’s paintings picture contemporary life in spectacular motion. Created through a complex system of painting, drawing, cutting, and collaging onto wood panels, her practice is centered around the depiction of figures, symbols, and abstract spaces using multi-layered ornamental surfaces and fields of color. Drawing on her experience as a Japanese-born artist growing up in Brazil and later practicing in the United States, Fueki’s work embraces the visual language from these three distinct cultures. As Fueki explains: “I consider myself a mixed-language painter with interest in eastern and western perspectival systems, architectural graphics, pop animation, pre-Renaissance European painting, and exuberant color.”

“My paintings focus on the intersection of caretaking, motherhood, and creative practice. This work began just before the pandemic through conversations with other mothers and caretakers about balancing creative practice (be it writing, music, running or painting) with daily care responsibilities. My images are based on a mother or a caretaker, and I paint a studio for them.
Through painting, research, and installation, I continue to analyze and imagine new ways that motherhood and artistic practice contribute to each other. My paintings invent spaces for nocturnal women, working against distraction in marginal hours of the day. These works are on paper due to a material shift that enabled me to paint at home on a smaller scale at the start of the pandemic. I am rediscovering color for myself in these works, finding new networks dictated by the twilight of a fluorescent painting ground. I intend these spaces to be more psychological than physical. They are not about escape; they are about a deep desire to reflect and refuel.
My work is inspired by a desire for solitary space, which was so valuable during the pandemic. In quarantine, I occupied more time with those I care for, making flashes of solitude particularly rare. Increasingly, my buildings struggle to hold the figure inside, or the women get to work before the structure is complete. This often leaves an open edge between architecture and landscape, no longer making the studio a fixed place.” LINKS:

17 Mar 2023 | A Little Bit of Belief: Artist Mikey Yates | 00:40:54
I first saw Mikey Yates work in our 2020 exhibition Drowned Neon Rose and I've been following him ever since. Mikey Yates is Kansas City based painter born in Sulzbach-Rosenberg, Germany. He grew up drawing the various characters that colored his life: Scorpion from Mortal Kombat, Ryu from Street Fighter and Gary Payton from the Sonics. Yates continues this practice today, but instead of strictly rendering fictional characters and sports superstars he paints family members and friends, vivid memoirs of his past, and present day situations. Yates received his BFA from Missouri State University and his MFA from the University of Colorado Boulder. In this episode, Mikey and I talk about how he got involved in the arts, his practice and what's influenced him throughout his professional art career. Links: Artist Shoutout:

15 Mar 2024 | Artist Marc Mitchell: Experimentation, Authenticity, and the Connections That Fuel an Artistic Career | 00:57:31
Marc Mitchell holds a M.F.A from Boston University. His work has been included in exhibitions at the Schneider Museum of Art, Southern Oregon University; University of Wisconsin, Madison; University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa; Florida Atlantic University Galleries, Boca Raton; TOPS Gallery, Memphis, TN; GRIN Gallery, Providence, RI; Laconia Gallery, Boston, MA; and others. Mitchell has been featured in publications such as the Boston Globe, Burnaway, and Number Inc; and was selected for New American Paintings in 2014, 2017, 2018, and 2020. Mitchell has been an Artist-in-Residence at the Banff Center for Arts & Creativity, Ucross Foundation, Vermont Studio Center, Hambidge Center for the Arts, Jentel Foundation, and Tides Institute/StudioWorks. In 2021, Mitchell was a Fellow at The American Academy in Rome. In addition to his studio practice, Mitchell has curated exhibitions that feature artists such as Tauba Auerbach (Diagonal Press), Mel Bochner, Matt Bollinger, Mark Bradford, Tara Donovan, Chie Fueki, Daniel Gordon, Sara Greenberger-Rafferty, Philip Guston, Josephine Halvorson, Trenton Doyle Hancock, Jenny Holzer, Rashid Johnson, Mary Reid Kelley, Ellsworth Kelly, Arnold Kemp, Allan McCollum, Kay Rosen, Erin Shirreff, Lorna Simpson, Jered Sprecher, Jessica Stockholder, Jason Stopa, Hank Willis Thomas, Carrie Mae Weems, Lawrence Weiner, Wendy White, Molly Zuckerman-Hartung, and many others. "I am influenced by many things—1980’s guitars, VHS tapes, World War I battleships, sunrise/sunset gradients, moiré patterns, and more. Over the past 3 years, ‘notions of cycle’ have played an increased role in the development of my paintings; and I’m curious how the avant-garde succeeds and fails within popular culture. Currently, I’m interested in how the landscape has been depicted throughout American culture. Whether it’s Thomas Cole and Albert Bierstadt of the Hudson River School, Georgia O’Keeffe’s monumental work at the Art Institute of Chicago, or an Instagram post of a sunset—each conveys a romanticized view of our world. The most recent paintings are an amalgamation of experiences that I’ve had within the American landscape; with each painting flowing freely between representation and abstraction." Kamal X is a self-taught documentary photographer currently based in Brooklyn, New York. Photography found Kamal in 2015, after deciding to quit everything to travel the world in honor of his best friend who passed away due to colon cancer. A hard truth that serves as a major influence in his creative style, which is rooted in telling stories that showcase the hidden truths of humanity that are often misunderstood or overlooked. Deciding to mold those images into a mini-series entitled The Beautiful: Oakland to D.C., he won 2nd place in Lensculture’s Black & White Photography Awards. More recently, Kamal was featured in Apple’s “Hometown” campaign which highlighted black photographers across America. Lastly, in 2021 Kamal self-published his debut photography book, A Quest Supreme, which documents 5 years of traveling to over 40 countries in search of inner peace.
“I am a self-made photographer that strives to push my limits to create images that evoke emotion and honesty. In a world that is often consumed with what’s next, my goal is to help us remember the core elements of who we truly are.”

26 Apr 2024 | Narratives on Family, Community and Materials: L.A. Artist Kim Garcia | 00:48:22
Kim Garcia is an artist working in sculpture, drawing, and painting. Through her 2nd-generation Filipino American lens, her practice explores social dynamics and residual trauma from interpersonal relationships, community structures, and memory. Kim comes from a background in creating collaborative community projects that often employ alternative spaces to explore studio art practices, site-specific collaboration, and museum and exhibition research. She is the founder of The Cold Read, an online critique group and artist collective that engages gestures of care and support through writing and is one of the co-founders of after hours gallery, an art gallery in Los Angeles that hosts two-person exhibitions. Kim is based in Los Angeles and received her BA from UC San Diego and her MFA from UC Irvine. "Through the fusion of reality and fiction, my work emerges from personal encounters, aiming to complicate narratives surrounding second-generation Filipino American histories. I delve into the intricacies of post-colonial identity, exploring themes of intimacy and influence stemming from social interactions. Sculptures form the vibrant outcome of the work, fictionalizing personal events to probe power dynamics, trauma, community structures, and memory. Utilizing materials like medical casting tape, my artworks simultaneously display trauma and symbolize healing. Gradient colors evoke movement, while layered hues express emotional complexity. The sculptures breathe life into color, activating motion and tension. I perceive my work as a form of storytelling, where the malleability of oral narratives inspires a nuanced approach to archiving personal histories. By combining sculpture, drawing, and painting, my hybrid material practice investigates enduring tensions accumulated over time, unearthing possibilities for constructing a future from a suppressed past." 11 Nov 2022 | Following Your Passion with Artist Linda Colletta | 00:56:01
Linda Colletta is an abstract artist, who has been creating art in various mediums for over 25 years. At 19-years old, she got her start in New York City as a scenic artist painting backdrops for MTV and VH1. After 16 years in the music television industry, she left to dedicate herself to painting full time. Her work has been shown nationally at Scope Miami Beach, LA Art Show, Market Art & Design Hamptons, Uprise Art, White Room Gallery, Southport Gallery, Burning Man, The Affordable Art Fair, and The Other Art Fair. Private collections include Google NYC, Justin Bieber, deCordova Museum, Memorial Sloan Kettering, New York Presbyterian, 590 Madison and 277 Fifth NoMad. Linda is self-taught and works from her studio in Bridgeport, CT.
Linda Colletta’s supersaturated canvases consume the viewer with intensity. Her frenetic approach to color, paint, and process push the limits of materiality resulting in multilayered compositions that function as emotional portals. Examining themes of compulsion, obsession, and addiction - through a lens of feminism, pop culture, and childhood nostalgia - Colletta’s paintings give form to the delicate alchemy of humanity.
Using color as her muse, Colletta explores textures, patterns and layers mimicked both in nature and urban landscapes through a variety of mediums like acrylic, oil sticks, spray paint, pastels, graphite, ink, and canvas scraps. Her chromatic obsession has led to an arresting and palpable palette through a liberal use of neon pastels which lay the foundations of her visual vocabulary. From fluorescent corals to midnight blues to neon limes, the multiple tones often work in tandem, activating one another upon countless picture planes. Fluid brushstrokes unite with organic pools of paint, expressing the dichotomy between the elegance and messiness of being human.
Working across multiple series at once, each collection is the product of fastidious conservation. Colletta harvests her studio for recycled remnants, including dried paint skins and paint water to carefully construct works that are classified by their makeup such as Dropcloths, Pools, Paintskins, or Mash Ups. The disparate elements found in her studio embody a collective energy from previous paintings. When combined, they embody a talisman of inspiration for future work. The inability to discard any left-over materials traces back to Colletta’s deeply personal issues with a compulsive overeating disorder that often caused her to covet, hoard, and binge junk food in an impetuous and secretive manner.
That all of her canvases maintain a confectionary aspect is no coincidence. Luscious hues of frosted pinks, shiny magentas, and slick reds recall classic childhood delights like cotton candy, cupcakes and sugar cookies. Her paint skins are easily mistaken for frosting or saltwater taffy. Layered with dark glitter and candy coatings, themes of glee and pain bolster her work, giving paintings like “It’s a Cupcake Panic Party”, “Licorice Lace” and “Clandestine Crunch” deeper meaning below the surface as they are emblems of her ongoing recovery process. Whimsical on the outside and gritty on the inside, each work is in direct pursuit of radical honesty and reckless abandon.

17 Nov 2023 | Finding Creative Ways to Support the Arts: Artist Devin Howell Curry | 00:31:04
Devin Howell Curry earned a Bachelor's degree in Anthropology from Florida Atlantic University (FAU). She received her MFA in Painting at the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma. She participated in the intensive program at Mount Gretna School of Art in 2016 and was also selected as a Four Pillars Artist in 2019. Her work has been exhibited nationally, including New York City, Richmond, VA, Lancaster, PA, Tulsa, OK, Cambridge, and Boston, MA. In 2019 Devin was featured in New American Paintings, #141 MFA Annual. She currently works as an associate faculty member at Post University in Waterbury, CT. She lives in Fredericksburg, Virginia, with her husband and son. "My still life paintings incorporate both recorded observation and invention. The arrangements consist of objects that carry personal meaning: ceramic pieces made by my great grandmother, trinkets that belonged to my grandmother, and books of women artists I feel a connection with. I often add a self-portrait in the work, placing myself within the same space of the women I reference. I am interested in lineage (both biological and artistic), the connection between women, and the objects we keep to remember the women who came before us. While I do think of the work as possessing a narrative, I also see it as an attempt to chronicle what is lost, a mapping process, a charting of both spatial proximity and what can never truly be known."

He went on to receive his MFA in Painting from The Savannah College of Art and Design (Savannah, GA, 2010). He spent the next six years in Brooklyn, NY immersed in the NYC art scene. In March of 2016, while attending a month-long residency at The Vermont Studio Center he realized how integral time, space, and nature were to his studio practice and in 2016, relocated to Madison, TN, just outside of Nashville. His work has been featured in various group exhibitions at Ground Floor Contemporary (Birmingham, AL), Lowe Mill (Huntsville, AL), Gallery 85 (Chelsea, NY), The Parthenon (Nashville, TN), CultureLab LIC (Queens, NY), Piano Craft Gallery (Boston, MA), New York Hall of Science & SciArts Initiative (Queens, NY), Prince Street Gallery (New York, NY), Flatwork Contemporary (online), I Like Your Work Podcast (online and print), ArtMaze Mag (online and print), Create Magazine (online) and the NYC Crit Club Winter Session 2023 (curated by MEPAINTSME). In 2022 he was accepted to the White Columns Curated Online Artist Registry (New York, NY). He has attended artist residencies at Vermont Studio Center (Johnson, VT), Art Residency Chattanooga (Chattanooga, TN), Azule (Hot Springs, NC), Jx Farms (Cleveland, MS), and Mudhouse (Crete, Greece). He has had solo shows at Wheelhouse Arts (Louisville, KY), Oz Arts (Nashville, TN) and The Red Arrow Gallery (Nashville, TN). He has an upcoming residency at On:View Artist Residency at Sulfur Studios (May 2024, Savannah, GA) and a solo show at The Ellis Gallery at Sulfur Studios (July 2024, Savannah, GA). In April, 2024 he will also be included in a group exhibition at Tyger Tyger Gallery (Asheville, NC). In 2024, Kesling will also be showing in two-person shows at The Gadsden Museum of Art (Gadsden, AL), Wheelhouse Arts (Louisville, KY), and Ground Floor Contemporary (Birmingham, AL). Kesling is a member of the artist collective at Ground Floor Contemporary (Birmingham, AL) and is represented by The Red Arrow Gallery (Nashville, TN) and Wheelhouse Art (Louisville, KY). "My practice delves into the complexities of human intimacy, both romantic and familial. After the death of my younger brother and many of my friends to the ongoing opioid epidemic of my Appalachian hometown and the country at large, my own mortality became embedded within my active mark-making. Driven by a need to understand the world around me, my work serves as a visual exploration of the emotional and psychological intricacies of relationships, personal loss, and our place in the natural world. Imbued with a deep sense of nostalgia, the work harkens back to the excitement and vulnerability of new human connections and experiencing nature in a new light. For me, painting is as necessary as digging in the dirt - dragging your hand through a body of water - across a freshly buzzed head."

12 Apr 2024 | Working with Glass & Public Project Advice with Artist Laura Sallade | 00:44:11
Laura Sallade is an artist living and working in Philadelphia. Sallade earned a Certificate in Sculpture from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 2013 and is completing a coordinated Bachelors of Fine Arts at The University of Pennsylvania. During her time at UPenn, the artist has also worked toward a Certificate in Positive Psychology and an Advanced Certificate in Creative Writing. While completing her degree, the artist has worked at the intersection of painting and glass, exhibiting in New York, Philadelphia, and beyond, creating large scale multi panel works. Her most recent solo exhibitions include Cairn University in 2023 and Massey Klein Gallery in 2022. Notable group exhibitions include the Susquehanna Art Museum, Future Art Fair, and The Woodmere Art Museum. Laura has completed public commissions for Atlantic Aviation Airport, Jefferson Hospital, and The Ritz Carlton, among many others. Recent awards and residencies include The SIM Residency in Iceland, The Pilchuck Glass School Scholarship, and The Nextfab Fellowship. Laura is currently preparing for a two person show at Works on Paper Gallery in Philadelphia. "Without light we can’t see matter—inversely, without matter we can’t see light. This interdependent relationship is the crux of my practice. I’m interested in colloquial references to light as a fleeting presence—a shadow appears, the sun sets, a beam of light enters the room. In reality, we know that light is the constant and we are the variable—it’s our physical world that is shifting, our planet that is rotating, our galaxy that is hurling through space. I observe these paradoxical understandings of the world and emphasize our skewed perception of light by capturing moments of flux. Using glass, silver, and mixed media, I investigate the link between light and matter. Integrating scientific and intuitive processes, I create evocative gestural works that walk the line between image and object. Rather than rendering light, I rely on its interaction with opaque and translucent shapes and textures to capture the ephemeral. Paying homage to the fickleness of memory, I indiscriminately excavate large portions of a composition through hand-cut elimination and rely on suggestive remains."

I've spoken a lot about applying to open calls and the importance of putting yourself out there as an artist but in today's mini episode, I'm joining you to chat about how to know when to step back and NOT apply to open calls. I go over how you should know when to focus on other things as an artist instead of putting your effort into open calls and how this can be helpful in the long run. 22 Sep 2023 | Building Community, Chautauqua Visual Arts, and Giving Back | 00:14:47
I am a huge advocate for inclusive communities as essential for our growth. In this episode, I share three reasons community is vital and two ways to build your community. I also share about my personal experience at Chautauqua as a student and how I am thrilled to be the new Artistic Director of Chautauqua Visual Arts. First off, community is a source of comfort for artists. The creative journey can be isolating, with long hours spent working alone. In a community, you find others who understand and can support you through the tough times. Secondly, being part of a creative group means you're constantly learning. Other artists have their unique skills and insights, and when you share ideas, everyone benefits. Not only do we get to learn about new mediums, but we also can share our life experiences. Lastly, communities open doors to opportunities and fun. Collaborations and projects often emerge from these connections, broadening your artistic horizons and bringing joy to your work.

06 Oct 2023 | Tips on How To Have a Successful Open Studio | 00:14:25
This week on the podcast, we discuss Open Studios! Here is a quick guide to get your work out there. 1-Who and Where: Choose from various open studio setups, from showcasing your work solo to collaborating with other artists. Consider inviting neighboring studios to join in. 2- Tidy Up and Organize: Declutter your space to showcase your artwork effectively. Consider painting walls and cleaning distracting surfaces, turning it into a pre-party celebration. 3-Curate Your Collection: Highlight the pieces you're excited to discuss. If you're open to sales, make those artworks available. 4- Promote: Spread the word about your open studio on social media, newsletters, and through friends. 5-Prepare to Discuss Your Art: Practice your elevator pitch and share your passion for your work and creative process. 6-Create a Welcoming Atmosphere: Offer guests tea, wine, and snacks to enhance conversation and comfort. 7-Pricing and Sales: Be prepared with price lists and payment options if you intend to sell your art. Let me know if you recently had an open studio, if you have one coming up, or have questions! ilikeyourworkpodcast@gmail.com
