07 Oct 2019 | Episode 2 | 2017 AZ Archery Bull Elk Hunt | 00:21:16
There are a lot of first wrapped up in this story…my first archery harvest, my first elk, my first hunting film. Plus, the way this whole hunt played out with harsh winds and not being able to call them in, it’s one of my favorite hunting stories to date. Listen in to hear how adapting strategies and being willing to think outside the box can lead to success out in the field. This podcast is produced by Late to the Game Outdoors. 08 Oct 2019 | Episode 3 | First Mule Deer Ever! | 00:22:11
This is actually the story of my first big game harvest ever! Sighting issues with a new rifle led to a massive comedy of errors, several missed bucks, and a whole lot of unnecessary running around. Ultimately, I was able to harvest my first buck, but it was anything but the clean and professional sounding story I wish it was. This podcast is produced by Late to the Game Outdoors. In this episode, I sit down with my friend and cameraman, Ben Crosby, to talk through the story of my first ever out of state hunt. 01 Mar 2020 | Episode 5 | The Teleporting Javelina | 00:19:54
This is the tragic tale of my 2020 Archery Javelina hunt, a bad shot, and a pig with more fight in him than I ever thought possible. This is the first time I’ve made a bad shot and tried to re-stalk a wounded animal, and the way it went down is nothing I ever expected. It’s highly possible that pig could actually fly. 08 Apr 2020 | Episode 9 | First Solo Backcountry Experience (Terrified in the Woods!) | 00:22:39
This is technically not a hunting story, but it is an outdoors story, it involves animals, and it’s actually quite helpful for anyone considering solo and/or backcountry hunting. About 10 years ago, I put together some basic gear and set out on my first ever solo backpacking trip. I don’t know if I’ve ever been so scared in my life, but that trip also did something deep within me that has been undeniably transformational. My life and hunting style have changed in a hundred ways since then, but this trip started it all. 13 Apr 2020 | Episode 10 | Wild Boars and Deliverance in Hawaii | 00:28:52
In this episode I’m joined by my brother-in-law, Zach Fleming, to hear one of the CRAZIEST hunting stories ever! When Zach called me from Hawaii and told me what he had just experienced, I knew I had to get him on the podcast immediately. A random meeting with a perfect stranger turned into a day of bushwhacking through the jungle following a pack of dogs on the hunt for wild boar. 20 Apr 2020 | Episode 11 | The Legend of the Bear Curse | 00:31:21
When it comes to AZ Black Bears, I am cursed! On almost every single hunt, something crazy, unexpected, and completely outside my control happens to derail the hunt. It’s become consistent enough over the years that I’m starting to rethink my typical stance on superstitions. In this episode, I run through six different bear hunts that all resulted in a different disaster. 27 Apr 2020 | Episode 12 | First-Time Hunter | 00:21:46
As you may know, I am an adult-onset hunter. My first exposure to hunting came when I married into a hunting family, and my father-in-law gifted me an archery elk tag for Christmas. I knew absolutely nothing about what I needed to do or what to expect, but it’s an experience that has literally changed my life all these years later. 26 May 2020 | Episode 14 | So Close Yet So Far | 00:27:43
In this episode, I tell the story of my 2016 AZ Archery Elk Hunt. In one week of hunting I had more close calls on elk than I’ve ever had on any single hunt. Though I didn’t tag out, the lessons learned in that season definitely prepared me for the success I had the following year! 12 Sep 2020 | Episode 16 | Bear in the Crosshairs | 00:32:33
This is the story of the 2020 early Fall bear season here in AZ. My buddy Josh (@dialedinhunter) and I went on a couple different hunts and really put in the work during a hot, dry, difficult year. Josh tagged out the day after I had to leave camp, and I returned solo the following weekend and had a ridiculously close call on a beautiful bruin. 27 Nov 2020 | Episode 17 | CO Archery Elk 2020 | 00:42:17
This year I went back to the same general area I tried in 2019 to get some redemption on Colorado archery elk. My buddy Josh (@dialedinhunter) tagged along for the first part to finish out his high country mule deer tag. We camped higher, saw more action, and put in more physical hours of hunting than we did the previous year. Tons of great lessons learned and memories made! 09 Jun 2021 | Episode 19 | Christmastime Desert Muley | 00:31:23
At the end of a very long hunting slump, I had just a couple evenings after Christmas to hunt mule deer with my bow. I went back to the farm where I had just been hunting with my family during rifle season to see if I could connect on one of the bucks still hanging around on the property. At the last moment of light on the last day I had to hunt, everything came together! If you’re a newer hunter (or an experienced one just looking to make sure there aren’t any gaps in your hunting game), check out my book How to Hunt: A Total Beginner’s Guide to Hunting Big Game. As promised in the episode, you can see the film that covers both the family hunt from Episode 18 and this awesome archery buck right here. 03 Jun 2021 | Episode 18 | Family Deer Hunt at the Farm | 00:27:35
My wife and oldest son are both aspiring hunters who have yet to harvest their first animal. In the fall of 2020 they both drew rifle deer tags in a unit that has a large alfalfa farm my wife’s family runs. We spent the weekend chasing bucks and living comfortably at a relative’s house…it’s truly the way to hunt with your family. Bucks were seen and shots were fired, so tune in to hear how it all went down. If you’re a newer hunter (or an experienced one just looking to make sure there aren’t any gaps in your hunting game), check out my book How to Hunt: A Total Beginner’s Guide to Hunting Big Game. 16 Jun 2021 | Episode 20 | The Bear Curse Is Broken! | 00:34:43
After four long years of trying to harvest an Arizona black bear with no shortage of disasters along the way, I finally connect on a Spring Bear with my buddy Josh from @dialedinhunter. Two different trips in two different units finally paid off on the last morning I was able to hunt. This bruin made us work for him and the way it all panned out was nothing short of epic! If you’re a newer hunter (or an experienced one just looking to make sure there aren’t any gaps in your hunting game), check out my book How to Hunt: A Total Beginner’s Guide to Hunting Big Game. 23 Jun 2021 | Episode 21 | First Buck In Maine | 00:52:22
On this episode, I’m joined by Connor from Maine Meat Collection as he shares the story of his first whitetail buck ever. On a whim, he reached out to a buddy and asked if he would take him deer hunting for the first time. The story that unfolds involves a massive buck, a sprinting doe in heat, a blood trailing dauchsund, and an all-day tracking job that pays off in a massive whitetail buck for this new deer hunter. To stay up on the hunting adventures of Connor and his buddies, give them a follow on Instagram @mainemeatcollection and head over and subscribe to their YouTube channel. 30 Jun 2021 | Episode 22 | Trent Fisher from Born & Raised Outdoors | 00:47:57
This episode is a little bit different than usual. I had the extreme pleasure of talking with one of my all-time hunting heroes, Trent Fisher from Born and Raised Outdoors on their podcast - The Born & Raised Audio Experience. Trent was also kind enough to share the audio with me and encourage me to put it up on the Hunting Stories Podcast, so that’s what I’m sharing with you here. We talk about a couple of hunting stories, but also just have a great conversation about new hunters and how we can all get out there and find success. I think you’ll really enjoy the conversation, and there’s definitely something to learn for just about everybody in here. If you’re a newer hunter (or an experienced one just looking to make sure there aren’t any gaps in your hunting game), check out my book How to Hunt: A Total Beginner’s Guide to Hunting Big Game. 07 Jul 2021 | Episode 23 | Idaho Spring Bear with Josh Kirchner | 00:38:53
In this episode, I sit down once again with my good friend Josh Kirchner from Dialed In Hunter to talk about his epic backcountry Spring bear hunt in Idaho this past season. Josh went deep into the Idaho backcountry and had plenty of encounters with these amazing Idaho bears. He also drops plenty of really helpful tips and tactics along the way, so if you weren’t planning on chasing Spring bears anytime soon, you almost certainly will be thinking about it by the time he’s done. To catch up with Josh, you can find him on social media @dialedinhunter, his YouTube channel, or check out his website. And if you’re interested in the idea of backcountry hunting, he wrote a phenomenal book on the subject called Becoming a Backpack Hunter. 14 Jul 2021 | Episode 24 | A Real 200" Kansas Whitetail | 00:49:36
In this episode, I talk with Jeff Hamm from Kansas about the epic (and hilarious) story of his true 200” Whitetail Buck. The number of things that went wrong…and then so very right…and then wrong again to put this deer in his hands is nothing short of incredible. If you’re a bowhunter, I know you’ll feel his pain. To keep up with Jeff and his future hunting adventures, give him a follow on Instagram @jhamm2001 If you’re a newer hunter (or an experienced one just looking to make sure there aren’t any gaps in your hunting game), check out my book How to Hunt: A Total Beginner’s Guide to Hunting Big Game. 21 Jul 2021 | Episode 25 | Massive Bull Elk at 10 Years Old | 00:25:03
In this episode, I talk with Caleb Gotthardt (also on Episode 15) about his first bull elk ever. He was 10, he almost lost hope, and his parents coaxed him into the field with snacks to put him on this giant bull. It’s a terrific story that I know I as a parent really resonated with! To keep up with Caleb and his future hunting adventures, give him a follow on Instagram @_northernadventures_ If you’re a newer hunter (or an experienced one just looking to make sure there aren’t any gaps in your hunting game), check out my book How to Hunt: A Total Beginner’s Guide to Hunting Big Game. 28 Jul 2021 | Episode 26 | Whitetail, Turkeys, and Tragedy | 01:02:40
In this episode, I talk with Jake Bartlett from Pennsylvania about a series of family hunts for deer and turkeys with his family. But, while we’re having that conversation, we also get into some real talk about tragedy, loss, and how we (especially as men) often don’t handle it so well. It’s a heavier episode, but a great conversation that all of us should be open to having. If you want to connect with Jake, shoot him a message on Instagram @jakey_jake6. Also, if you’re dealing with something similar to Jake’s situation or want to help others in that same boat, head over to Emma’s Footprints and learn how you can help. 01 Jan 2022 | Season 2 - Episode 1 | When Your Elk Season Falls Apart | 00:37:49
In this episode, I get real about how sometimes life just gets in the way and utterly destroys what was supposed to be an incredible elk season. The short time I did get in the elk woods was action packed with plenty of close calls, but I think the real life issues that plagued that season from the start will be relatable to just about anyone trying to juggle work, family, and hunting (which is pretty much all of us). If you’re a newer hunter (or an experienced one just looking to make sure there aren’t any gaps in your hunting game), check out my book How to Hunt: A Total Beginner’s Guide to Hunting Big Game. 12 Jan 2022 | Season 2 - Episode 2 | Archery Coues Deer Hunt | 00:44:38
In this episode, I tell the story of the Arizona archery Coues deer hunt I just had the privilege of filming for my buddy Josh [@dialedinhunter]. We worked as a team to guide him into the biggest buck he’s ever seen on the hoof, and the twists and turns the story takes from “buck spotted” to laying hands on his antlers is nearly 24 hours of pure stress and insanity. It’s a killer story I’m proud to have been a part of! If you’re a newer hunter (or an experienced one just looking to make sure there aren’t any gaps in your hunting game), check out my book How to Hunt: A Total Beginner’s Guide to Hunting Big Game. 20 Jan 2022 | Season 2 - Episode 3 | High Country Mule Deer in Utah | 00:42:55
In this episode, I finally tell the story of my epic week-long hunt in Utah during the early archery season this past year. High country backpack hunting for giant velvet bucks in some of the most technical terrain I’ve ever been in. We saw bucks every day, made stalks every day, and even encountered an almost definite serial killer on the way home…it was an amazing hunt! If you’re a newer hunter (or an experienced one just looking to make sure there aren’t any gaps in your hunting game), check out my book How to Hunt: A Total Beginner’s Guide to Hunting Big Game. 26 Jan 2022 | Season 2 - Episode 4 | Mark Huelsing - Alaska Caribou Hunt | 01:19:47
In this episode, I’m joined by Mark Huelsing from EXO Mountain Gear and he shares the story of his first ever trip to Alaska to chase caribou with some good buddies. It’s a terrific story of grinding out a hunt that didn’t go as planned, but finding incredible success anyway. After that, we talk about the backcountry in general and a few pack-specific details every hunter should consider. To follow up with Mark, head over to exomountaingear.com or follow them on Instagram @huntbackcountry. You can also email him directly at mark@exomountaingear.com. 02 Feb 2022 | Season 2 - Episode 5 | January in Arizona - A Bowhunter's Dream | 01:00:20
In this episode, I break down the exploits of my January 2022 season chasing both mule deer and javelina in the desert with my bow. It was a crazy month with a ton of opportunities, some massive bucks, stink-pigs protected by a moat like medieval royalty, and one of the best single days of spot-and-stalk deer hunting I’ve ever experienced! If you’re a newer hunter (or an experienced one just looking to make sure there aren’t any gaps in your hunting game), check out my book How to Hunt: A Total Beginner’s Guide to Hunting Big Game. 09 Feb 2022 | Season 2 - Episode 6 | Elias Benton - First Archery Buck in CA | 00:43:44
In this episode, I talk to Elias Benson about his first archery mule deer buck in Northern California. Elias grew up hunting but recently caught the bowhunting itch. He went through two seasons of grinding it out in the backcountry, and in an amazing story of missed shots and follow-ups, finally made a perfect shot on a really nice muley buck. To keep up with Elias, go give him a follow on Instagram @bent_on_hunting. 17 Feb 2022 | Season 2 - Episode 7 | Ryan Smith - Backcountry Archery Moose | 01:11:20
My guest today is Ryan Smith, owner of the highly popular @hunt_az page on Instagram. Ryan shares an incredible story of a Colorado moose hunt deep in the backcountry with his brothers-in-law. Horses, life-threatening situations, missed shots, and redemption are all a part of the adventure…I know you’re gonna love it. After the story, Ryan and I have a conversation about the recent scare we had in AZ with some groups trying to shut down bear/predator hunting, how Ryan inadvertently found himself on the forefront of that issue, and what we as hunters can do to better support each other and speak up for our way of life. To keep up with Ryan, go give him a follow @hunt_az, and you can check out his youtube channel. You can also go join the pack at howlforwildlife.org to protect hunting and our way of life in America. 17 Mar 2022 | Season 2 - Episode 8 | Josh Kirchner - Poachers Who Can't Shoot and a Giant Boar | 00:33:46
Today I get to welcome back to the podcast my good buddy, Josh Kirchner, from Dialed-In-Hunter. Josh tells the story of last Fall’s October bear hunt where he harvested what will possibly always be the biggest bear of his life. Along the way, he encounters attempted poachers, a hunting partner who just barely ran out of shooting light, and a murderous packout that almost took out three experienced hunters. To see the film of this incredible hunt, head over HERE. To catch up with Josh, find him on Instagram, YouTube, or his Website. Also, if you’re thinking about getting into backcountry hunting, Josh wrote an absolute must-read book that you can find HERE. 11 May 2022 | Season 2 - Episode 9 | My Buddy Shot A Bear While I Was Pooping | 00:49:22
Today I tell the story of my Idaho Spring Bear hunt from deep in the backcountry of Idaho. We were on the mountain for a full seven days, battled rain/snow/fog every single day, and when an opportunity finally presented itself, I was “indisposed.” But at the end of it all, my buddy, Josh, and I had a terrific hunt through the wet and the cold, saw plenty of bears, and made some great memories on this suffer-fest of a backcountry hunt. The fitness program I mention at the end is called HillStrong from Omnia Performance. It’ll kick your butt, but (see what I did there) it’ll get you in the best hunting shape of your life. If you’re a newer hunter (or an experienced one just looking to make sure there aren’t any gaps in your hunting game), check out my book How to Hunt: A Total Beginner’s Guide to Hunting Big Game. 18 May 2022 | Season 2 - Episode 10 | Perry Snowden - First Day Luck On A Giant Whitetail Buck | 00:26:56
Today I’m joined by Perry Snowden from Kentucky, a fellow late to the game / married into hunting guy, who tells the story of his first ever day of hunting that turned out better (and wilder) than he would have ever imagined. This massive buck showed up in the right spot at the right time, but the story surrounding getting him and even getting him out of the woods takes a few crazy turns along the way. If you want to catch up with Perry, you can find him on Instagram or Twitter. As he said in the episode, “Come for the deer pictures, stay for the steaks!” If you’re a newer hunter (or an experienced one just looking to make sure there aren’t any gaps in your hunting game), check out my book How to Hunt: A Total Beginner’s Guide to Hunting Big Game. Today I’m joined by Bob Baldwin and Jay Ledbetter, authors of the book Proper Care and Feeding of a Huntin’ Buddy. Bob and Jay are absolute riots, and it really felt like I was sitting around a campfire listening to two great friends tell stories and joke with each other. I could have talked with them for much longer, but had to keep it short (though we’re already working on a second episode with them). 24 Jun 2022 | Season 2 - Episode 13 | Keith Ward - First Muley in Alberta | 00:49:23
Today I’m joined by Keith Ward from Alberta Canada. Keith is certainly an experienced hunter, but decided to try his hand at hunting mule deer for the first time last year. There were blown stalks, missed shots, and a whole bunch of shenanigans, but he ultimately connected on this massive buck who had given him the slip once before. It’s a great story and a terrific buck that any hunter would be proud to lay his hands on. Today I’m joined by Matt Chambers from Mississippi with a CRAZY story about whitetail hunting and his blood trailing dogs! Matt reached out with a quick synopsis of the story and a video clip that I absolutely couldn’t believe…I knew I had to have him on. What follows is one of the most astounding hunting stories I’ve ever heard of. 10 Aug 2022 | Season 2 - Episode 15 | Bob & Jay - Proper Care & Feeding of a Huntin' Buddy (Part II) | 00:28:29
Today was I able to have Bob Baldwin and Jay Ledbetter back on the podcast. They’re the authors of the book Proper Care and Feeding of a Huntin’ Buddy. Bob and Jay are absolute riots, and I was so happy to have them back on the show. What I missed in the first episode was the story that started it all - their mishap-filled Colorado elk hunt that sparked the idea that they should share their hilarious hunting stories with the world by writing this book. 27 Aug 2022 | Season 2 - Episode 16 | Archery Antelope in Arizona | 00:55:02
This is the story of my first-ever antelope hunt in my home state of Arizona. Lots of bad luck and obstacles to overcome, but finally on day 5 of the hunt, a gorgeous buck came within range. It’s a great story of overcoming adversity, refusing to quit when things aren’t going right, and dealing with the pain of a shot not unfolding the way you want it to. I also got terrific footage of this hunt and the film will be coming out soon, so make sure you’re subscribed to the Late to the Game Outdoors YouTube channel to see it when it comes out. goHUNT is the only resource I trust for draw odds, e-scouting and maps, and they’re my go-to gear shop as well. 11 Nov 2022 | Season 2 - Episode 17 | Utah Backcountry Elk Disaster | 00:38:49
This year I didn’t have an archery elk hunt in my fall calendar, and I just couldn’t stand it! So, at the last minute, I decided to make a quick trip up to Utah to try and chase some elk on a quick solo backcountry hunt. From the minute I left the pavement, things started to go wrong, and they only got worse as the trip went on. It definitely became one of the sketchiest solo backcountry experiences I’ve ever had, and at the end of the day I was just thankful to get back home safely. Follow along on my cautionary tale of woe and hopefully pick up some tips to keep you from meeting a similar fate in the backcountry. 18 Nov 2022 | Season 2 - Episode 18 | My Son Tags His First Elk | 00:44:20
This is a very special episode for me because I’m joined by my oldest son to tell the story of his first ever harvest. Hendric finally drew the AZ Youth Rifle Cow Elk tag, and that meant we were heading to my favorite elk spot…the exact area where I harvested my first bull. In just two days we had a several really cool encounters, the bulls were still bugling, and he finally connected on the morning of day 2. I’m still beaming with pride over this one, and it’s a hunting memory I’ll cherish forever. I was also fortunate enough to capture the adventure on film, so if you’d like to watch the hunt unfold, you can see that HERE. 25 Nov 2022 | Season 2 - Episode 19 | Mule Deer Double with Josh Kirchner | 00:42:28
Once again I’m joined by my good friend, Josh Kirchner from Dialed-In-Hunter, as he shares two incredible stories from his fall mule deer adventures. One was an Idaho rifle hunt and the other was high country archery, but the similarities and incredible success in these two hunts is mind-boggling. To see the films of both of these hunts, head over to Josh’s YouTube Channel, and go pick up a copy of his book, Becoming a Backpack Hunter, if you’ve ever considered diving into the backcountry hunting world. 02 Dec 2022 | Season 2 - Episode 20 | First Time Coues Success from California | 00:42:28
Today I’m joined by Garrison Sexson who hails from the Bay Area of California. He cut his teeth chasing mulies and blacktail deer in his home state, but an injury forced him to replan his fall and he found himself heading with a buddy to Arizona to chase the legendary and elusive Coues Deer for the first time. They put in the work, got on deer every day, and ultimately found success. In fact, his buddy was able to harvest his first deer ever, and it just happened to be a Coues. It’s a great story that I’m sure you’ll enjoy! 09 Dec 2022 | Season 2 - Episode 21 | Wounded Veteran on a Last Minute Bighorn Sheep Hunt | 00:52:58
This is honestly one of the coolest stories I’ve been able to share on this podcast! Today I’m joined by Caleb Brewer, a double amputee Army Special Forces Vet, who was given an Arizona Bighorn Sheep tag at the last minute. Also on the line are the two Ryans - Ryan Gentry and Ryan Smith - two active duty Air Force guys who jumped in to help with Caleb’s hunt. This tag was in rugged and remote country, so they knew they’d face some challenges getting Caleb around in there. But, the way the hunt came together and the story unfolded was absolutely amazing! More than that, the camaraderie between everyone involved and the lengths these guys were willing to go to help a fellow Vet is nothing short of inspiring. To connect with the organization that made this all possible, check out Outdoor Experience 4 All and get involved. To connect with Caleb, you can follow him on Instagram @ckbrewer or check out his bow shop and support a veteran-owned business at Stick Sniper Archery. 13 Jan 2023 | Season 2 - Episode 22 | Father, Son & Son Coues Deer Hunt | 00:41:48
This year my wife and oldest son drew pretty great rifle Coues deer tags in the Arizona desert, and for a number of reasons my wife ended up not going. So, me and my two sons (ages 13 & 10) set out for a 3-day boys trip to try and get my oldest a shot at a buck. The weather was cold, the hikes were long, and the bucks were in short supply. At the end of the day, though, we had a great time hanging out together in the wild. We pushed ourselves, saw some great country, and made memories that will last a lifetime. This episode is all about that experience, and some pretty poignant thoughts about hunting with your kids. 20 Jan 2023 | Season 2 - Episode 23 | Archery Coues Deer in the Rut | 00:58:51
This is the second year I’ve joined some buddies for the first week of the year to chase Coues in the backcountry right in the peak of the rut. There were bucks everywhere, stalks every day, arrows flew, and meat came out of the backcountry with us. There was also the accidental shooting of the “wrong” deer who was one of two with a very distinct antler situation. Too many bucks to keep track of is exactly the problem you want to have out there, and it’s what this area seems to deliver every year.
