In this HCI Podcast, I share my recent interview with Bill Reel on his podcast, Almost Awakened. We discuss my new book, The Alchemy of Truly Remarkable Leadership.
From his podcast description: "I sit down with my friend, Professor, Podcaster, and Author Jon Westover and we discuss his new book, “The Alchemy of Truly Remarkable Leadership: Ordinary, Everyday Actions That Produce Extraordinary Results”. We talk about what makes a good leader. What toxic leadership looks like. How good leaders foster principles like trust, diversity, inclusivity, and belonging. and Most importantly, I think, how good leaders create an environment for people around them to achieve and succeed. Jon truly is a great leader and you can tell that his words are congruent with his internal character. The world is a better place with humans like Jon around."

Ross Cunningham is a student attending Frankfurt International School (FIS). He is initially from Scotland; however, he has spent a majority of his life in Germany. He is in his second year of the IB program, and takes psychology, biology and economics at higher level. He has written an extended essay investigating whether intelligence or motivation is the more important factor in the educational success of students, and his discoveries have intrigued him, inspiring him to participate in the upcoming TED talk event as a speaker surrounding this subject. In his spare time, he is member of a local badminton team, member of the Model United Nations and member of “Operation Smile”, a service group supporting children with cleft palates. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community."

05 Jun 2021 | S19E24 - Inspiring TED Talks - The Happy Secret to Better Work, with Shawn Achor | 00:30:51
In this "Inspiring TED Talks" HCI Podcast episode, Dr. Jonathan H. Westover (https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathanhwestover/) explores Shawn Achor's 2012 TED talk, "The Happy secret to Better Work." See the video here: https://youtu.be/fLJsdqxnZb0. Video Overview: "It’s generally assumed we have to work to be happy, but what if we have it backwards? That’s the argument psychologist and CEO Shawn Achor makes in this 2012 talk. Achor says we need to be happy independently of work, and only then will we be able to increase productivity and success in the workplace.
Searching for happiness in the workplace can be a deep rabbit hole that often leads to less happiness overall. This is an important message for leaders, who seek to inspire other people in their line of work. It just so happens that developing happiness outside the 9-5 hours is the most important for our health and success." Shawn Achor is the winner of over a dozen distinguished teaching awards at Harvard University, where he delivered lectures on positive psychology in the most popular class at Harvard.
He is the CEO of Good Think Inc., a Cambridge-based consulting firm which researches positive outliers -- people who are well above average -- to understand where human potential, success and happiness intersect. Based on his research and 12 years of experience at Harvard, he clearly and humorously describes to organizations how to increase happiness and meaning, raise success rates and profitability, and create positive transformations that ripple into more successful cultures. He is also the author of The Happiness Advantage. Check out Dr. Westover's new book, The Alchemy of Truly Remarkable Leadership, here: https://www.innovativehumancapital.com/leadershipalchemy.

18 Jul 2020 | S4E28 - Designing Meaningful Work during COVID-19: Implications for Managers & the Future of Work | 01:02:01
In this HCI Podcast episode, we share Dr. Westover's recent ISQOLS webinar. This webinar summarizes a series of studies comparing job satisfaction and its determinants across 37 countries, based on data from the most recent wave of the International Social Survey Program. This research explores various work-life balance factors, job autonomy, and meaningful work indicators and the related considerations for managers as they work to design work (including remote work) during the COVID-19 pandemic.
As we all know, COVID-19 is having a worldwide and significant impact on the world of work. Scheduling flexibility has taken on new meaning with employees working from home on a regular basis. Not only must these employees fulfill their work responsibilities, but in many cases, care for children and assist with schoolwork. Some may find working from home isolating and experience increased conflict between home and work responsibilities, while others may enjoy the flexibility and find that it increases productivity. A study administered early in the COVID-19 crisis found that 80% of those working remotely were happy doing so.
Well-designed jobs, that provide meaning and purpose to employees, the autonomy to determine how they perform their work, and that provide for various work-life-balance benefits are proven to drive higher levels of worker satisfaction and engagement, which has enormous benefits for both workers and their employers alike. These benefits include increased productivity, innovation and creativity, and less job turnover and absenteeism.
Additionally, COVID-19 has provided an opportunity for managers to determine effective practices for working from home. Given that flexible work arrangements improve worker satisfaction and engagement globally and across generations of workers, managers should determine how to leverage and continue these arrangements as they work to support their employees and design jobs that drive performance.

14 Jul 2021 | S21E17 - Developing Your Company’s Multilingual Skills for a Competitive Edge, with Steve Leveen | 00:36:57
In this HCI Podcast episode, Dr. Jonathan H. Westover (https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathanhwestover/) talks with Steve Leveen about developing your company's multilingual skills for a competitive edge. See the video here: https://youtu.be/j_yRwbFSjvM. Steve Leveen (https://www.linkedin.com/in/steveleveen/) is the author of America’s Bilingual Century: How Americans are giving the gift of bilingualism to themselves, their loved ones, and their country (America the Bilingual Press, January 2021). Based on a decade of research, plus hundreds of interviews with language teachers and researchers as well as bilinguals, this foundational work puts forth a new vision for America, one that Steve maintains is already coming into focus throughout the country—namely, an America where nearly all who live here speak English and another language. Steve offers his own midlife awakening to bilingualism as proof that, just as it’s never too early to learn another language, it’s also never too late. He has made Spanish his “adopted language.” In researching America’s Bilingual Century, Steve spent two fellowship years at Harvard and Stanford, interviewing some of the country’s major scholars of bilingualism. America’s Bilingual Century is part of the America the Bilingual Project, an advocacy initiative that Steve began in 2017 to help foster a stronger and healthier nation through bilingualism. In founding America the Bilingual, Steve embarked on his encore career. In this "Forbes Feature Rewind" HCI Podcast episode, Dr. Jonathan H. Westover (https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathanhwestover/) explores the recent Forbes video, "6 Ways To Recruit Top Gen Z Talent" (Originally Aired May 19, 2021). See the video here: https://youtu.be/_hIMcGaX3Y8.
Video Overview: "On the cusp of their professional lives, Generation-Z was looking forward to joining the workforce in the midst of a strong economy. Enter COVID-19—and all of that changed overnight. Now, as the economy is showing signs of life, this generation is taking a second look at their assumptions about the world of work. And they’re changing their minds on several key issues. A new survey by Tallo asked nearly 10,000 high school and college students about their shifting perspectives on work and what’s important to them in their first full-time position. Compared to last year, young people are significantly more likely to prioritize financial stability, hone their networking skills and consider moving for the right offer. It might be easy to lump Millennials and Gen-Z together—but there are some distinct nuances. While Millennials may not entirely deserve their reputation as job-hoppers, their careers have taken many turns, and they also play a significant role in the gig economy. Tapping into the next generation of talent has become more strategic than ever. Here are six ways recruiters can pivot to get Gen-Z’s attention on the job front."

Jessica Iclisoy (https://www.linkedin.com/in/jessica-iclisoy-bb8ba041/) is Founder/CEO of California Baby. More than 20 years ago, Jessica Iclisoy embarked on a journey to create a non-toxic environment for her family. Since then, Jessica has built California Baby into a globally recognized brand, with more than 90 products available at major retailers nationwide and through a global distribution network. California Baby is a recognized Women Owned Business, with its own certified organic and FDA registered manufacturing operation and a certified organic farm. Jessica believes that her mission extends far beyond creating products that are safe for children and healthy for the environment. In 2016, she launched The Natural Advisory Council (NAC) to form a coalition of natural, organic and “green” product manufacturers, retailers, and non-profit consumer protection organizations to advocate, collaborate and educate (ACE) on the definition and use of the term, “natural” in all consumer products.
