28 Mar 2022 | Paying Off a Million Dollars of Debt with Naseema McElroy #493 | 00:51:43
Today we are joined by Naseema McElroy! Naseema is an RN with a master’s degree in healthcare administration, who also founded the website Financially Intentional and launched the podcast, Nurses on FIRE. Both of these resources exist to help nursing professionals achieve a sense of financial freedom in their lives. Given the demand for healthcare workers, there are a lot of career opportunities available so we’re excited to touch on that. Naseema also wrote the book, Smart Money, to give folks a step-by-step plan to crush their debt. But most impressively- Naseema has paid off over one million dollars of debt which doesn’t even seem possible- don’t worry, she explains her story! She details how she climbed out of massive debt as a single mother, the turning point in her journey towards financial independence, nursing as a cheat code to earning more, keeping lifestyle inflation in check, and much more. 04 Sep 2019 | The Power of Investing in Yourself #119 | 00:31:16
We talk a lot about investing- whether that be in the stock market, in real estate, or in bitcoin (JK don’t ever do that)! But it’s not often that we discuss investing in ourselves- our personal capital is one of the greatest assets we have! The power to grow our income based on our unique skills is crucial as we develop personally and professionally. While many folks stop growing their knowledge and experience once they receive that diploma, challenging ourselves to grow in these areas can have a massive payoff down the road. During this episode we enjoyed a Whiskey Peach Cider by Western Cider Co- another big thanks to Rae in Missoula for donating to the show this week! 14 Jul 2021 | Breaking Down More Common Money Phrases #383 | 00:43:43
There’s no such thing as a free lunch. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. You’ve heard phrases like this your entire life but are they true? And how can we specifically apply them to our personal finances? We had fun talking about some common money phrases earlier this year, but since then we’ve realized that there were a bunch of good ones we didn’t cover! So we figured it was a good idea to hit up even more common money phrases that we’ve all heard and dissect them. And the reason we feel this is surprisingly important is because the sayings we hear can often bore into our brains and if we hear them enough we believe them as fact. But many of these common sayings have flaws in them or are just downright wrong. So have a listen as we think through some more money sayings and how they apply to our personal finances. During this episode we enjoyed an Elderberry Northwest Sour Ale by Cascade Brewing! And please help us to spread the word by letting friends and family know about How to Money! 11 Dec 2024 | Buy What You Love Without Going Broke w/ Frugal Friends Jen & Jill #917 | 01:00:20
Today’s episode offers a peek into what your favorite personal finance podcast might be like, if only it was hosted by two ladies! Jen Smith and Jill Sirianni are hosts of the Frugal Friends podcast which is all about embracing a more intentional and frugal lifestyle… but not THAT kind of frugal. They challenge the idea that frugality is about deprivation and instead highlight how it can empower you to achieve financial independence while living a life filled with joy and purpose. Jen and Jill drive this point home in their new book, Buy What You Love Without Going Broke, which is exactly what we’re talking about today- spending money! We cover the ways that we’re doing it wrong, how to spend money in a healthy values-driven way, and strategies to support those new habits!

Did you know that with a credit card you might already use, you have access to $600 worth of cell phone insurance that is already baked into the card? 18 Jan 2023 | A Foolproof Plan to Ditch Debt #620 | 00:50:41
Sitting on your butt is killing you! According to the Heart Foundation, folks who sit the most are 90% more susceptible to dying from cardiovascular events like heart attacks and strokes. And while taking a load off and having a seat isn’t going to immediately harm you, the accumulation of years and decades of a more sedentary lifestyle could lead to an earlier death! And we feel similarly when it comes to consumer debt. Paying a little interest this month isn’t going to completely wreck your financial future, but it’s a real problem if it becomes a permanent fixture in your life. Not to mention the fact that credit card interest rates are rising and millions of Americans made their holiday purchases with money they don’t have. Listen as we discuss the straightforward steps to create a foolproof plan, where we land on the debt snowball vs debt avalanche approach, as well as some additional helpful tips that will allow you to ditch debt for good.

05 Mar 2025 | Launching an Offbeat and Sustainable Business w/ Jason Zook #953 | 00:58:55
“Solve a problem for people in an interesting way” and “There’s not one way to do business”... those are just a couple quotes from our conversation with Jason Zook. Our goal for this episode is for you to finish listening, and to be completely inspired to start your own small business. Unfortunately, there can be this aura around starting an “official business” that keeps creative individuals who have great ideas from pursuing something that is going to light them up and prove to be successful. Sure, getting an MBA might be the best path to take for a certain subset, but there are a lot of folks who might be better served by just going for it, and figuring it out along the way! And here to talk about that is Jason, an entrepreneur who takes a very unconventional approach to business formation. He and his wife currently run Wandering Aimfully, which is a platform that seeks to help creative entrepreneurs build successful, sustainable businesses that fit with their lifestyle, all while avoiding the burnout that tends to come with hustle culture. Listen as wee discuss everything from Jason auctioning his last name, creating ‘calm’ businesses, to living abroad in Portugal and more!

15 Feb 2023 | Did the Pandemic Change Personal Finance? #632 | 00:49:20
Cults are fascinating. The amount of gaslighting and denial of reality that takes place in order to perpetuate the movement is simply mind boggling. And one of the most interesting parts is to see interviews with the folks who finally got out. For years they couldn’t see clearly as they were essentially brainwashed, but now they look back on everything they experienced in a completely different light. When you’re in the midst of something so enveloping and all-consuming it can be difficult to know your right from your left, to know the difference between truth and lies. And similarly it can be difficult to discern the magnitude and scope of the impact of something like a global pandemic on our lives until some time has passed. But now that we had a few years between us and lockdowns, we wanted to discuss the specific ways in which Covid 19 has jolted personal finance and how we should respond to those changes.

24 Mar 2021 | Dissecting the Truthfulness of Common Money Phrases #335 | 00:40:52
You can call them maxims, proverbs, or even mottos, but the most common phrases we hear tend to ingrain themselves as truth over time. If we hear something consistently enough it takes root in our psyche! Some of those sayings are about money but what if they’re not true? If we have the wrong information we could have a view of our money, of business, and even of how the world works that is entirely false! During this episode we talk about some of the most common money phrases that we hear and dissect the truthfulness of those phrases. If something we hear about money is incorrect or flawed, we need to correct our course! We want to make sure that we’re not accidentally basing our personal finance beliefs on some catchy sayings we’ve heard over the years. During this episode we enjoyed an Aliens on Moonshine by Torched Hop! 29 May 2019 | Fees Will Kill Your Retirement Savings #091 | 00:30:15
How much are you paying to invest in your 401k or IRA? You might see fees as an unavoidable cost of investing, but even a 1% fee could easily cost you more than a half million dollars over your investing lifetime. Fees not only erode how much money you have to invest now, but they lessen the amount of money that is compounding in your account year after year- the impact is twofold! Listen as we discuss the different types of fees, how to look for them, and then where to go in order to avoid fees altogether. During this episode we both enjoyed a Bent De Garde by Braindead Brewing which you can find on Untappd. A big thanks to Jerrod and our friends out there in Dallas for donating this beer to the show! 26 Jan 2022 | How to KEEP Yourself Out of Debt #467 | 00:44:50
Do you remember the Seinfeld ‘car reservation’ episode? It’s one of the best. Jerry gets to the car rental counter and they don’t have a car for him. And that’s really the most important part of the reservation, the holding!” That’s what we’re talking about today because you might know how to get out of debt, but do you know how to stay out of debt? You might find yourself digging out of debt every year when January rolls around. Holiday spending has a habit of sneaking up on most folks and you might be dealing with that financial hangover right now. 11 Feb 2019 | Small Time Real Estate Investing with $Pro Chad Carson #060 | 00:36:25
You don’t have to be a millionaire to be a successful real estate investor. Chad Carson, our $Pro this week, is here to explain how even a small, effective real estate portfolio can lead to reaching your financial goals in a short period of time. He illustrates this with an example of a couple reaching financial independence with only five properties, not hundreds! Having greater financial freedom and flexibility with your time will be the natural outcome of focusing on your goals, and carefully investing in real estate can take you there. During this episode we enjoyed a Primordial Noir by Cascade Brewing which you can find and learn all about on Untappd. A massive thanks for Alex in Oregon for donating this beer to the show! Today’s episode is all about getting out of debt as we talk with our new friend George Kamel! And it’s a good time to have this discussion as well since consumer debt, in particular credit card debt, has been on a tear over the past several years- we’re over the $1 trillion mark folks! And we’re lucky to be joined by George because not only has he personally climbed from a negative net worth himself, but he’s also a personal finance expert at Ramsey Solutions! George co-hosts the Ramsey Show as well as the Smart Money Happy Hour podcast in addition to over 16 million views on his YouTube channel. And to prove that he knows how to rock more than a microphone, George has a new book “Breaking Free From Broke” that came out earlier this month. We’re excited to get to know George and his story, how he got started at Ramsey, the normalization of debt, keeping tabs on lifestyle creep, his biggest wealth hack, and plenty more during this episode. 06 Jun 2018 | Good Debt vs Bad Debt #022 | 00:37:45
Conventional wisdom tells us that getting out of debt is smart. And while generally that might be true, we're here to explain how that approach may not be the best decision for you! Oftentimes keeping low-interest debt around while you're able to invest and maximize your returns elsewhere will easily make the most sense when you're looking at the numbers. In this episode we cover the characteristics of good debt and bad debt, and then we talk through some helpful pointers on how to manage your current debt. Remember this one thing: somewhere around 7% is the magic number that separates low interest debt from high interest debt. That's the interest rate that acts as a divider in our current market. Anything higher than that you'll want to pay off sooner than later, and anything lower than that, there is a good chance you can take those extra payments and invest to make a big enough return to make it worthwhile. Listen to the entire episode to hear us break it down because it's a very nuanced topic! At the beginning of this episode we each cracked open and enjoyed a beer called Infusion A - Coffee Porter by Hoppin' Frog Brewery, a peanut buttery porter which you can learn all about on Untappd. Your birthday comes around every year- and you never forget because it’s something that you look forward to! This neglect is compounded by the fact that our finances have gotten more complicated than ever. You likely have accounts everywhere: you might have multiple 401ks, savings accounts, credit cards- it might feel like there’s too much going on as you juggle more logins than you can keep up with. Now these are tasks that don’t need to become ongoing obligations, but we do think they will help you make your personal finances more manageable. 13 Mar 2023 | Use It Up, Wear It Out, Make It Do, or Do Without with Katy Wolk-Stanley #643 | 00:51:58
Everybody has heard of a consumer advocate before- someone who helps to make sure that individuals are getting the best deal possible. Or to make sure that the quality of the products is up to snuff. For instance think of Consumer Reports and the countless reporting and tests they perform on the different items we use as consumers. But you likely haven’t heard of a ‘non-consumer advocate’ before and that’s who we’re talking with today; our friend Katy Wolk-Stanley! Katy’s site is TheNonConsumerAdvocate.com and she helps people learn to live on less, and to do so in a way that lessens their environmental impact. She’s an uber-frugalite who hardly ever buys anything new, and she uses that superpower to help others to live on as little income as possible. In this episode we discuss some of the different tactics that anyone can deploy: prioritizing lower tech solutions that last, how Katy easily fixes her broken household items, how minimalism and frugalism compliment each other, selling items on eBay, getting tax breaks for donating to Goodwill, and more!

06 Nov 2024 | The (High) Cost of Kids w/ Emily Oster #902 | 00:47:04
Here on the podcast we don’t shy away from the fact that we’re big fans of having kids- Joel has three, Matt has four. But that is not typical here in the United States where the average is 1.6 births per woman… but why? We think the costly nature of having kids is one of the reasons. Depending on which study you’re looking at and the cost of living cited, we’ve seen upwards of $400,000 per kid! But even still, should it be all about the numbers? Should that data drive all of our decisions? Luckily we’re joined by someone who is a parent and knows all about the data- Emily Oster. Emily is a professor of economics at Brown University, the author of books like Expecting Better, Cribsheet, and Family Firm, and now host of the new podcast Raising Parents. And while you might know her as the lady who says it’s ok to have wine and coffee in moderation while pregnant, or as the health economist who shared unpopular opinions on Covid policies during the pandemic, we’re excited to share our conversation that’s all about our money and kids: making career breaks and staying home with the kids, why we need to approach family decisions the way a business would, Emily’s take on allowances, and more!

19 Feb 2025 | Breaking the Hidden Barriers to Financial Freedom w/ Jessica Moorhouse #947 | 00:52:28
We’re joined today by Jessica Moorhouse who started out as a blogger, looking for a creative outlet and way to hold herself accountable, and is now a financial counselor, speaker, and host of her own podcast- More Money. She is also the author of the new book, “Everything But Money: The Hidden Barriers Between You and Financial Freedom”. Jessica is all about providing easy to understand advice, delivered in a non-judgemental way, and she believes that there’s a lot of stuff that gets in the way of us being able to achieve our financial goals. Maybe most folks already know how to invest, but what they need is help with the trauma from their upbringing!? Maaaybe we even get into our own money stories from way back when, back when we were little kids and how that shaped our personal views of money… we get into all of that and more during our conversation today!

29 Nov 2023 | FAFSA Hacks to Curb College Costs w/ The FAFSA Guru #755 | 00:49:50
Today we're diving into the dollar-saving-world of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, better known as the FAFSA (which has seen some significant changes this year). Other than the cost of a hospital visit, nothing has skyrocketed in price like college tuition and fees over the past 20 years. You think your house or your new car is crazy expensive? Nope, just wait until your kid starts looking at colleges- that’s when the real sticker shock kicks in! And that’s why we’re excited to be joined by Tina Steele who is known as The FAFSA Guru. Tina is an expert when it comes to financial aid- she has decades of experience whether she was directly working for different public and private universities, leading a statewide initiative in Maine helping disadvantaged students to pursue college, or creating incredibly valuable videos for her YouTube channel. Today we discuss the critical changes to the FAFSA, who those changes helped and who they hurt, costly mistakes that divorced parents make, the best strategy for appealing a financial aid offer, and other tactics for curbing college costs.

10 Nov 2021 | Think Twice Before Investing #434 | 00:41:09
Investing isn’t as simple as just throwing some money in the market and crossing your fingers. Yes, we do want you to invest. And yes there’s a chance you could probably invest more than you currently are. But there are a host of additional considerations that we want you examining before you open a brokerage account on your phone, initiating a transfer, and hitting purchase. Do you know what you’re investing in? Can you easily explain it to a friend? How do you feel about volatility, fees associated with that investment, illiquidity, and your time horizon? We like to think of it like taking a road trip- there are a number of things to do keep in mind like: do I know where I’m going, does my boss know I’m taking time off work, how long am I going to be gone, and can my car even handle a road trip of this magnitude? We’re not trying to dissuade you from investing, but we do want you to think twice before investing. During this episode we each enjoyed an Emergency Drinking Beer by Wild Heaven! 31 Jul 2019 | Why are we Saving for Retirement, Again? #109 | 00:24:48
If you have a difficult time setting aside money for the future and saving towards retirement, then identifying why it is that you’re saving might be what you’re missing. Studies have even shown that we will save more money for retirement when we’re able to see an older version of ourselves- so maybe trying out FaceApp is a good thing after all! Even though we all might have different motivators, it’s healthy to remind ourselves of why it is so important to save and invest. And actually realizing and understanding that we’re going to be old one day is crucial when it comes to maintaining a high savings rate in our 401k, IRA, and other investment vehicles. During this episode we enjoyed a Christmas Bomb by Prairie- a big thanks to Jeff for donating this beer to the show! 09 Oct 2024 | Taxes Rule!... Your Life w/ Scott Hodge #890 | 00:49:42
The reason there are so many hard seltzers on the market, the type of car you’re looking to buy, even why women wear children’s clothing – our guest today is going to share why it is in fact TAXES that are behind nearly every aspect of our lives. We’re doing a deep dive as to how taxes tend to direct our behavior and decision making in ways that most folks don’t realize, and those are just a few of the examples that we discuss today. We’re joined today by Scott Hodge who has over 35 years of tax policy experience. More recently he led the Tax Foundation, a Washington DC based think-tank, for over two decades. And today we’re going to discuss his recently published book, Taxocracy which is full of examples of how misguided tax policy has led to the world we live in today. Most people think of taxes as an annoying aspect of life, but our conversation today reframes it as another powerful invisible hand at work in the market!

06 Mar 2024 | Personal Finance For Geniuses w/ Adam Nash #797 | 00:59:07
… literally, we’re discussing why some of the brightest minds at Stanford University need just as much instruction for their money as the typical American. At such a competitive school, with one of the lowest acceptance rates, you’d think those students have everything figured out, but you’d be wrong! Our guest today, Adam Nash, is a personal finance enthusiast and adjunct lecturer at Stanford University. And today we cover topics like why he starts the course with behavioral finance and how prioritizing income over expenses can bring a traditionally dry subject to life. But beyond the classroom, Adam’s career spans roles at companies like Dropbox, eBay, and even Apple to just name a few that we use on a daily basis. And he’s currently serving as the CEO and co-founder of Daffy, which is a fintech platform centered around charitable giving. So even though it’s not December, we’re also going to talk about strategically giving your money away, why more folks need to consider donor advised funds, and how Daffy can help to make us all more charitable and generous individuals.

01 Jun 2022 | Is The Stock Market Broken? #521 | 00:45:21
Imagine hopping on a flight to visit your parents on the other side of the world. You don’t avoid flying by plane because there’s likely going to be some turbulence- a few rough patches are to be expected. You take advantage of the modern marvel of a transatlantic flight and you go and see your family! Similarly, the stock market is the greatest wealth creating machine in history- it’s amazing! Investing in the market to achieve millionaire status has become possible for a much wider swath of folks but the path comes with its fair share of corrections and bear markets. To go back to the analogy- what if it's starting to look like air travel is no longer safe? You start to consider that upcoming flight! Sure, we’re seeing some market volatility now but future market predictions aren’t looking all that rosy either. Is it time to consider pulling out of the market? During this episode we’ll discuss why the market saw massive gains over the past 2 years, why we’re optimistic about the future of the stock market, what you should be doing if we experience a future of weak returns, and how you should be investing regardless of what’s going on with the stock market.

05 Apr 2023 | Money Gears: Ordering Your Money Decisions Properly #653 | 00:54:10
Over 1,000 years ago, somehow, the Vikings were able to sail from Norway to Greenland. Without relying on any special instruments or any rudimentary technology, they were even able to reach as far as North America! Evidently they relied on the polarization of the sky, whales or birds they came into contact with, and the color of the ocean- quite remarkable. It seems unlikely that any sailors would be able to pull that off today with modern day technology. But that’s often what it feels like as you’re trying to get your financial ship pointed in the right direction. The vastness of options that lie before you feel overwhelming and the obstacles that we face are daunting, but we’re here today to help you to: a) geolocate your financial situation, and b) determine what your next steps should be. It’s important to know where you are, and where you are going. Following our Money Gears will not only allow you to reach your financial goals sooner, but it’ll be the most emotionally satisfying way to achieve that success as well. Listen as we discuss the Money Gears and how you should properly order your financial decisions.

11 May 2022 | Starting A Business is Easier Than You Think #512 | 00:54:19
“Inconceivable!”. There are certain tasks in life that feel virtually impossible. One that comes to mind is painting your house- “I can’t do that, I’m not a professional painter!”. When in reality, that’s a project you actually could perform well. Or another one might be something like baking some biscuits- “I’m not some culinary magician who can whip together some homemade biscuits from scratch!”. When fact, that’s something 6th graders learn how to do in middle school. And the same thing is true for starting your own business- there seems to be this special aura surrounding small businesses that lead many to think that they don’t have what it takes. That it takes some special wizardry to run your own business. But we think that you do, in fact, have what it takes, that the pros outweigh the cons, and that the financial upside is worth leaving the “safety” of a W2 job. Listen as we cover the many reasons we believe starting a business is actually easier than you think.

22 Jul 2024 | Accidents and Insurance and Deductibles, Oh My! (Bestie) #856 | 00:56:13
Who remembers fire and tornado drills back when they were in school?! Even though in the moment they seemed like a complete waste of time, looking back as adults it’s easy to see how important it is to run a drill of what you would do in the event of a fire. And if you were in the scary scenario where you DID have a fire at your school, you were probably glad to have gone through the motions and rehearsed exactly what you should do. Insurance is kind of like a fire drill- most of the time it feels completely unnecessary, but in the rare instances where you actually need to put it to use, you’re more than happy to know you have that policy in place. And while virtually everyone is required to have car insurance, fewer folks have had the misfortune of being in an accident. So one of the problems we’re addressing today is what you should do after you’ve been involved in a car accident- it’s a surreal experience that can catch you off guard. We discuss things like diminished value and notifying your insurance company, but we also discuss how you can be financially prepared for accidents and the steps you can take to reduce the cost of insurance.

20 Nov 2024 | Giving Done Right w/ Phil Buchanan #908 | 00:53:05
Isn’t there a universal metric we can use in order to compare one charity to another? Not according to our guest today who says that we have to use the head AND the heart to determine what organizations we’re going to support. And when it comes to our motivation to give, I think it could be easy to dismiss our own efforts as just a tiny drop in the bucket. Maybe you’re giving when prompted at the checkout register, so it’s five bucks on occasion. Or maybe you are a little more disciplined or systematic about it and you give away a certain percentage of your income – but then you make recurring donations that you basically forget about. Out of sight, out of mind… but that’s not how we want you to give away your money. We want you to get the most bang for your buck! And here to help us to learn how to do that is Phil Buchanan, the president of the Center for Effective Philanthropy. He’s also the author of the book, Giving Done Right, where he emphasizes the importance of thoughtful and mission-driven giving. He has a podcast by the same name and he’s all about providing data-driven insights to help us maximize our personal impact. We talk about the limitations of effective altruism, focusing on local communities, the historical impact of philanthropy, and more!

27 Oct 2021 | Facing Down Our Spookiest Money Fears #428 | 00:47:27
Fear is an emotion that is hard-wired in us as humans, and so we naturally want to avoid the things that frighten us. But the biggest problem with this survival instinct is that there are times when we must face these fears in order to move forward and get ahead in life. We have a natural desire to avoid pain but if we don’t address it head-on, it’ll often lead to worse pain and problems down the road. This is often true when it comes to relationships, with our physical health, and it’s definitely true when it comes to our money. It’s a serious issue when we let fear get in the way of taking action. During this episode, with Halloween just around the corner, we cover some of the most common money fears that lurk in the back of our minds, and how to face them down in order to get one step closer to financial freedom. 26 Jul 2023 | What if You Won the Lottery? (Bestie Ep) #701 | 00:44:59
Winning the lottery shouldn’t be a part of your financial plan- but why are we so enthralled by the idea of winning the lottery?! On average, Americans spend over $1,000 every year for the chance to strike it rich. That’s a lot of wasted money that could be going towards literal investments. But even though we’re not going to win millions, statistically speaking, this exercise can provide some insights about the ways we want to spend our money and our time. This is helpful because there is a much higher likelihood that we would experience some sort of windfall in our lives whether that be a bonus at work, proceeds from a home sale, or even an inheritance. And if we haven’t taken the time to think through what we would do in these scenarios, there’s a good chance we could make the wrong decision in the heat of the moment. We’re going to get personal and share what we would do if we won the lottery, and we’re also going to explain how you can come up with your own money mission statement.

19 Jun 2019 | Socially Responsible Investing #097 | 00:24:22
More and more investors want their money to be going to companies who are doing good in the world, or at least to companies who are being responsible when it comes to the environment, social issues, and governance. Companies who are leading in this front may also be better positioned for future challenges and experience fewer instances of bribery, corruption, and fraud (bonus: giving you better returns on your investment)! Unfortunately, with socially responsible investing being fairly new on the scene, definitions can be unclear and terms are often used interchangeably. Listen as we dive into this topic, giving you the knowledge to help you decide what socially responsible investing means to you.
