If you've ever made a bad shot on a deer, or worse, wounded and lost a deer completely, you know you'd likely give anything in that moment to know what happened to the deer. If this hasn't happened to you yet, keep hunting, it eventually will. Blood trails dry up. Weather conditions might make blood trailing impossible. In these moments, hunters have a few options. They can grid search the area, which blows the area out and risks bumping a wounded deer. They can call in a dog, which can be hit or miss and again risks spooking the deer. Or, they can call in a drone. Wait, what?! In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Mike Yoder of Drone Deer Recovery about recovering wounded deer with the help of a drone. Mike is blazing a trail in a totally new, controversial, but certainly effective new realm of deer recovery. Whether you think recovering wounded deer with drones is the best thing since sliced bread or believe it should be outlawed, give this episode a listen to learn what it's all about.

09 Feb 2024 | Shed Hunting Kinda Sucks... | 00:46:36
Ahhh... Shed season is upon us!!!! Wait, are you really that excited for shed season? A quick glance at social media would suggest that if you aren't shed hunting, you're REALLY missing out. But for those of us without primo ground and a boatload of late season food, a shed hunt often produces little more than a walk in the woods and sore feet. It's likely that for MOST deer hunters, you'd be better off using this time for other activities that may actually help your hunting next fall because, in all honesty, shed hunting kinda sucks...

12 Oct 2023 | How to Hunt Deer - The October Lull: Fact or Fiction? | 00:34:07
Opening day is in the rear view and for many, early season aspirations have turned to broken dreams. Now the deer movement seems to have dried up in all of our tried and true spots. What happened? Is this the (cue the ominous music) OCTOBER LULL?! Well, yes and no. Studies Show that deer movement increases throughout the month of October with no decrease. But the experience of many hunters is that deer sightings by mid October have slowed to a trickle. What's going on here? In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Sam Bilhorn, Jake Hendrickson, and Greg Kazmierski of Whitetail Partners about the dreaded (or nonexistent) October Lull. The guys talk about what goes into hunters' perception of a lull in deer movement and how they would adjust to target a mature buck during the middle of October. 02 Jun 2022 | Choosing the Right Tree Stand | 00:29:02
Most whitetail hunters today, especially archery hunters, hunt from a tree stand of some sort. The days of nailing 2x4s to a tree and calling it good are behind us as deer hunters have rightly become a more safety conscious bunch. There are a ton of commercially available options today, but they aren’t all created equal. When choosing a tree stand, a little research and thought goes a long way toward making sure you’re happy with whatever purchase you make. The last thing you need is to find out on opening day that you hate your stand or you chose the wrong kind for your style of hunting. Tree stands are like shoes, you’ve got to pick the one that fits, is comfortable for you, and that’s built for the scenario for which you’ll be using it.
03 Mar 2022 | How Zach Ferenbaugh Uses Maps To Scout For Deer | 01:07:37
On this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Zach Ferenbaugh from The Hunting Public about map scouting for whitetails. Map scouting has become an indispensable tool for serious whitetail hunters. Mapping apps allow you to dissect aerial and topo imagery to locate potential bedding areas, feeding areas, and travel routes the deer prefer. Until you actually put boots on the ground, it’s all just an educated guess. But being an effective map scouter can make you far more efficient when off season scouting or when actively hunting. Every year, Zach and the rest of the THP crew travel the country chasing deer, turkeys, and other game in new and unique places. Their intense travel schedule means that they rely heavily on map scouting both in and out of season. It also means they have gotten really good at recognizing those terrain and habitat features that deer tend to gravitate to, no matter the region they’re hunting. In this episode, Zach shares some of the things that are consistent when it comes to map scouting no matter where he hunts. The next few episodes of the How to Hunt Deer podcast will explore map scouting different terrain types in greater detail, and how you might approach map scouting a little different depending on where you hunt.
20 Jul 2023 | Whitetail Hunting and Habitat Strategy for Drought Conditions | 00:38:26
Right now, much of the whitetail's range is experiencing pretty significant drought conditions. Whitetail destination states such as Iowa, Nebraska, Illinois, and Missouri are among the worst hit. This will certainly affect ag production, food plots, mast production, and even browse. If the drought continues into the fall, these conditions will create a difficult hunting season for many. But if you know how to adjust for drought conditions, you could be on your way to one of your best whitetail seasons yet. In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Sam Bilhorn of Whitetail Partners about adjusting your habitat and hunting strategy for drought conditions. Sam shares how he adapts to drought conditions on his property, and how his scouting and hunting strategy will differ if the drought continues into hunting season. Enjoy! In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with K.C. Smith from the Element about hunting bucks during the lockdown phase of the rut. K.C. has a great perspective on what the lockdown is, what the deer are actually doing, and how to get on the action, even when you may not see the cruising and chasing kind of rutting behavior of prior weeks. 17 Mar 2022 | How K.C. Smith Uses Maps to Scout for Deer | 01:09:03
In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer podcast, Josh talks with K.C. Smith about how K.C. uses maps to scout for deer in the more open terrain west of the Mississippi. Map scouting can be a challenge in more open regions. As K.C. explains in this episode, areas often provide better cover and forage than what it appears to provide on the map. This means relating boots-on-the-ground scouting to map scouting is extremely vital. K.C. is often working with unfamiliar territory and limited time. This means he needs to maximize his use of maps to find deer fast. Using Nebraska as a case study, K.C. breaks down his map scouting process from conception to kill. The guys also cover lots of other topics like finding quality food sources, picking the right glassing point, and how deer relate to terrain in more open territory. 28 Jul 2022 | Understanding Thermals | 00:56:58
Late July/early August is a great time to do some digital scouting and hang some stands. Understanding thermals and their impact on wind currents can help you take your scouting and stand sight selection to the next level. Thermals can make or break a hunt. Not only do they influence how deer move across the landscape, but hunting with thermals in mind can be the difference between you watching as a white tails bound off through the timber or you getting a chip shot at your target. But thermals can be tough to understand and predict. In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer podcast, Josh talks with Eric Ives of Red Bearded Predators for a little thermals 101. Eric hunts the hill country of southwestern WI, so he is no stranger to thermals, how they impact your hunting setups, and how deer use them to their advantage. 09 Feb 2023 | How Aaron Hepler Tackles Post-Season Scouting | 01:19:34
Deer hunting success in the fall of 2023 starts NOW! Many of the best hunters out there have one thing in common: they scout more than they hunt. Now is the perfect time to get a jump start on your scouting for the year. The woods are as open as they will be, much of the sign from this past fall is still visible, and if you're fortunate enough to have snow, deer trails and beds will stick out like a sore thumb. This is also the lowest risk time to scout. No need to worry about spooking deer onto your neighbors property, running a buck out of his core area, or ruining your next hunt with pressure. The deer have all year to forget about your intrusion! With that said, many are tempted to move on to other outdoor pursuits this time of year, and that's great. But make sure to set aside some time for what is likely the BEST time of year to really break down the areas you hunt and learn how the deer use them. In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer Podcast, Josh talks with Aaron Hepler about his approach to post-season scouting. Aaron is a serious public land deer hunter from Pennsylvania. He consistently gets on above average deer for his area despite intense hunting pressure. One thing that makes him so successful is his commitment to scouting. As you'll hear in this episode, for Aaron, post-season scouting begins as soon as his buck tag is full. Tune in to hear how he fine tunes his understanding of the areas he's familiar with, how he locates and breaks down new areas, and how he begins to formulate a plan for the next hunting season. 24 Mar 2022 | How Micheal Perry Uses Maps to Scout for Deer | 00:52:15
In this episode of the How to Hunt Deer podcast, Josh talks with Alabama big buck killing machine Michael Perry. Michael has had great success killing above average deer on heavily pressured public land in unforgiving terrain. Just last season he was fortunate enough to connect on the current Alabama muzzleloader record, a 195 6/8” bruiser. To what does Michael owe his success? Scouting, scouting, and scouting. Michael’s approach to using maps to scout for whitetails is quite different than many others today. Rather than starting with a map and picking likely whitetail hotspots, Michael picks hard to reach sections of his favorite public spots and puts boots on the ground. Once he finds promising sign, then the maps come out as he begins to ask, Why is that deer here? While this may sound more like an old school approach to using mapping apps, Michael’s success shows it can hold its own as a tried and true method. |
