Parents always ask me, “Why can’t my toddler fall asleep without me?!?”

Well, today, I’m going to show you why this is happening and what you need to understand before your child can be an independent sleeper.

20 Jun 2023Separation Anxiety and Sleep in Toddlers00:08:13

Today's topic is separation anxiety and sleep in toddlers.  Does your child's desire to have you near them cause lots of stalling and big emotions at bedtime?

My favorite bedtime book to help: The Invisible String by Patrice Karst: https://amzn.to/3EUBKKn

Parents commonly refer to this as separation anxiety.

I want to reframe this idea of toddler separation anxiety at bedtime and teach you a simple project you can do with your child to make bedtime run more smoothly.

First, I want you to understand that it’s 100% normal for child to have some separation anxiety - some clinginess and the feeling that they don’t want you to leave. It shows that your child has a healthy attachment to you and feels safe with you.

But it’s also our job to help our kids understand that they are safe and can be happy when they are not with us - when they go to school, when they stay with a babysitter or when it’s bedtime. Our goal is to foster and develop a sense of independence in our kids as they get older.

In this podcast, I will give you 3 things I want you to consider if you have a child who struggles being left alone at bedtime.

18 Jul 20234 Hacks to Prevent Crib Climbing00:05:16

------------------------------

Let's say that your 2-year-old climbed out of the crib last night. YIKES!

You’ve been dreading this day for a LONG time. You might think “Okay, it's time to move him to a toddler bed”

NOT SO FAST!

If you can keep your adventurous toddler SAFELY in the crib a little longer, you should do it. But we have to make sure they can’t climb out.

The freedom of the open toddler bed can be too much for young kids to handle.

Switching kids out of the crib too early can cause lots of sleep issues– like refusing to stay put at bedtime, suddenly needing you to stay in the room with them or waking up overnight. Or if you’re already having sleep issues with your crib-sleeper, the switch to the toddler bed will just intensify issues you’re already experiencing.

Kids who don’t sleep well in the crib, will sleep even worse in a bed.

So, if you can SAFELY keep your child in the crib without climbing out, do it.

29 Aug 2023Help! My Toddler Is Never Tired00:04:38

Help! My toddler won't go to bed at night.  Have you ever uttered this sentence?

You’ve heard me say a million times that your toddler & preschool age child needs to be going to bed before 8pm. But for many families, their child just doesn’t seem tired before 9 or 10pm.

Kids 2-8 years old should be getting 10-12 hours of consistent sleep each night with no wake ups. And the younger the child, the more sleep they need at night.

When kids don’t get enough good consistent sleep every night, they won’t settle at bedtime, resulting in the child getting “overtired”. This is just a sleep coach term that means your child isn’t getting enough sleep and it’s set off a bad cycle of poor sleep habits.

Late bedtimes can lead to overnight wake ups, getting up at 5am, skipping naps. Lots of sleep problems occur because kids are overtired.

When kids are overtired, it can actually mask the feeling of tiredness. This has to do with the levels of cortisol that is released when they aren’t getting enough sleep.

So actually the MOST tired kids may show very few obvious signs that they’re sleepy.

But don’t worry, they’re probably giving off some secret sleepy signs that you can learn to spot which will help you pinpoint the right early bedtime.

10 Oct 2023When to Drop Your Toddler’s Nap00:07:36

Today let's talk about toddler nap transitions. Are you trying to figure out if your toddler is ready to drop their nap?

So, when are toddlers ready to drop a nap?  I find usually kids are ready to drop their afternoon nap between 3 and 5 years old. All too often, I see families try to drop this nap too soon to improve bedtime which actually may be causing problems at night!

I am going to share a story about a recent client who reached out after going down the path of eliminating the afternoon nap too soon only to find it exacerbated their bedtime issues.

Why does dropping the nap too soon make things worse? Because sleep begets sleep.

Meaning, when kids are well-rested it’s easier for them to fall asleep.

So, how do you know when it’s finally time to drop the nap. Let me show you 3 ways to know for sure and why preserving the afternoon nap as long as possible will actually encourage your child to sleep better at night.

16 Jan 2024How Long Does Sleep Training Take?00:06:59

“How long does sleep training take?” I get this question from parents all the time.

When you use my REST Method™ which is taught in my toddler sleep course, Sleep Tight Without a Fight, the process is mapped out to take 2 weeks.

Meaning, after 2 weeks, your child will be able to fall asleep by themselves without you in the room and sleep through the night until at least 6am with no wake ups.

For most families, they see massive improvement in a matter of days. This could mean reduced bedtime battles, less tantruming, fewer or easier overnight wake ups.

In fact, some families have ALL their sleep problems fixed in a matter of days. While other families may take up to 2 weeks or even longer.

There are 2 factors that can impact how long sleep training will take with your child which I cover in detail in this podcast episode.

30 Jan 2024Are Toddler Daycare Naps Ruining Bedtime?00:05:24

Do toddler daycare naps ruin bedtime in your home?

Perhaps your toddler has stopped napping on the weekends and goes to bed at night pretty well. But your child is napping at daycare during the weekdays, and suddenly, bedtime has become a disaster!

You're sleep training needs a reboot.

You can’t get your toddler down until 9 p.m. or later, and sleep training at bedtime is a battle every night.

You’re not alone.

When kids transition away from taking naps, it feels like it throws their whole sleep schedule out of whack. It can be the cause of several toddler sleep problems.

I hear this complaint from families all the time. When their child naps at daycare during the week, bedtime is impossible. But on the weekend, with no nap, sleep training, and bedtime, is much easier.

The challenge is: many daycares are required by state laws or licensing to offer a nap, so it can leave parents in a bit of a pickle.

But there are ways around this.

Listen on for tips to help your toddler become an awesome little sleeper.

Now, if you’ve tried to change things and it hasn’t worked, you may have decided that your child just CAN’T sleep without you. Maybe they’re just too strong-willed or maybe they aren’t capable of sleeping independently for some reason. Or maybe you’re concerned that if you try and get out of this sleep situation that your relationship will be damaged.

So, you make a decision. And it may be an unconscious one. You decide that they must really NEED you at night. Not a preference but a NEED. So you’ve just given in and accepted it as your fate. This is your job.

And once you take it on as your responsibility, the prospect of trying to get out of it seems almost selfish.

And even if you’re exhausted and feel like a walking zombie who hasn’t slept through the night in a year, you STILL won’t change things because it feels selfish.

But what if getting your child sleeping through the night independently was the best thing for THEM?

What if working to get your child 10-12 hours of consistent sleep through the night with no wake ups was actually the healthiest thing you could do for them?

30 Jul 20244 Hacks to Prevent Crib Climbing | Toddler Crib Safety Tips00:05:20

22 Oct 2024Toddler Daycare Naps Ruin Bedtime | Awesome Little Sleepers00:05:28

Do toddler daycare naps ruin bedtime in your home?

Perhaps your toddler has stopped napping on the weekends and goes to bed at night pretty well. But your child is napping at daycare during the weekdays, and suddenly, bedtime has become a disaster!

Your sleep training needs a reboot.
