They tend to struggle with open ended questions

Here's a strategy to answer those types of questions...

CREATE a professional "why statement" as it relates to your analytics journey

One sentence about your PAST

One sentence about your PRESENT

One sentence about your FUTURE

This may feel like too short of an answer but you should think of an interview as a conversation and not a monologue

Allow your interviewer to ask follow up questions to guide the conversation instead of trying to guess what they want to hear

LinkedIn can be a powerful tool for you to leverage to become a data analyst too

But you need to know how the game works…

What makes a post viral vs a bust is how much time on average people stop scrolling their LinkedIn feed to read what you wrote and engage with your content

This requires a solid hook, or attention grabber and enough of a call to action to drive a person to click “see more” on your post

Most analysts are not great at advocating for themselves.

We’ve helped analysts negotiate $30k, $40k and even a $50k raise.

Here’s a concept that you can use to ask for more money…

ANCHORING

If you are currently working a job that pays you well beneath market value then you’re at a steep disadvantage from a negotiation stand point. 

Your manager associates you with a low salary and potentially even low value to the company. 

This is where ANCHORING comes into play.

In terms of negotiation, your value in your manager's mind is anchored at a low point. Any negotiation will be in comparison to where you currently are. This means you need to pull off a MAJOR win to get even a small raise.

One way to get anchoring on your side is to quantify the impact of your work in your resume and apply for a new job.

Your new employer doesn’t need to know your old salary.

You can just highlight the economic impact that you’ve had in that previous role.

Gavin has done an amazing job not only building his analytics skills but also improving his personal brand and putting himself out there in a professional sense. In this vlog I catch up with my student Cristina. She landed a 100% remote marketing analytics role as her first job after finishing her undergrad degree at Greensboro College. After working that job for 11 months she then got a raise to $82,000 and is now interviewing for a $95,000 analytics job. 

We filmed the portion of our conversation where I gave her advice on the interview process, helped her talk through her nerves and also role play some commonly asked analytics interview questions. This is my first vlog so feel free to leave a comment or suggestions on how I can make this type of content even better.

In this podcast episode I break down my experience landing an analytics job in 2024. It's not a great job market at the moment hence my 2.5% application to interview rate. I've applied to 193 jobs on LinkedIn and found some interesting insights from that experience that can help you in your job search.

In this episode I break down the analytics job market and offer actionable tips to help you land your next analytics job. I also touch on my experience interviewing for analytics jobs and the tools I used to land 40% of the jobs I interviewed for.

I wrap up the episode breaking down my experience interviewing in 2024 vs. my experience interviewing in 2017 when I was just trying to break into the analytics industry. I've learned a lot over the last 7 and a half years and those lessons really showed up during the interview process.

He started straight out of high school working in a call center from a bank then got promoted into an analyst position, moved into management and now is the VP for a bank. We talk about his journey and some of the lessons he learned along the way.
