I dared my team to dream big, and I was surprised with what they came up with.

I wanted to take a day to have everyone on my team do a vision board because I felt like many of them were being held back by their limiting beliefs. Before they wrote down any goals, we went around asking each other these questions:

1. If you had a $1 million and had to spend it all in one day and could not save it, what would you do with it?
2. If money and time were not an object, what would you want to accomplish with your life?
3. What makes life worth giving everything you got?
4. When you are on your deathbed, what needs to happen for you to be satisfied with the life you lived?

Then, I shared my life goals and vision, so they knew that nothing is off limits. Then they had to write their goals, find pictures that represented them, print them, then put it on a cardboard, and share them with the group. To say I was blown away would be an understatement.

This day made our team so much closer and aligned. We all know what we want in our life and are committed to helping each other reach them.

I have a feeling that this day will be one that will be talked about forever!

Hello, MC2C family! In the past couple of years, talk about diversity recruiting and how companies can build a team that mimics the communities that they serve is increasing.

As I continue to immerse myself in this subject matter, I have come to the conclusion that there are two main reasons there is not enough diversity in top companies. 

One of those reasons is that diverse candidates don’t know how to get the right visibility from these top companies. On the other hand, top companies don’t know how to find the right diverse candidates. 

Closing these bridges is the challenge that we have.

You think getting a job is hard? Try getting a job as an international student. 

Not only is the legal process complicated to understand, but it is also difficult to navigate. Based on my experience, international students apply to 10 times as more jobs than traditional students. Yet, you spent more than half of your time applying for the wrong companies. 

Did you know that only around 33% of all companies actually sponsor? Most international students don’t take the time to find this out before they apply, causing them to waste their time. 

Before you fill out the next application, ask yourself the following questions:

1. Has the company you are applying for sponsored someone before? 
2. If yes, have they sponsored someone for the role you are applying for?

For most college students, it takes a couple of job fairs or a stop by the career development center on campus to properly jumpstart their job/career journey.  Believe it or not, for our fellow MC2C mentee,, Adrian Alverez Sanchez, it all started with a meme from Daniel.

In today’s episode of the Mastering College to Career Podcast, I speak with Tech Career Strategist and Author of Master the Humble Brag: A Guide to Writing About Your Professional Wins, Lizzie Ann Jones. 

Lizzie Ann Jones discovered she was black through acts of hatred and racial slurs at the innocent age of five. Though this is a time when she should have been able to be joyous and carefree, this is the age her mother informed her that black people have to give 200% to be on the same playing field as everyone else. 

This sad truth that Lizzie faced as a young child is what many black and brown people face every day in this country. 

Times like these are always rough because I know I could never truly understand the pain and suffering that black people have gone through and continue to go through. My heart and support go out to this community because when one of us is hurting we all are hurting.

In this episode we discuss some harsh truths about our society and give advice to students of color in these times of crisis.

It’s not your university’s responsibility to get you a job and it’s not your future employer’s responsibility to get you a promotion. 

At the end of the day, you need to own your career and your life. 

All of these stakeholders in your life can help you, but you need to lead the charge. You need to take action and put in the work.

It’s no surprise that my focus is to help 1st generation and minority students land jobs with top companies.

Zack Valdez received his B.S. in Engineering in Physics before earning a Ph.D. in biogeochemistry at Baylor University. For close to 20 years, George has run a national executive search/recruiting firm mostly dealing with executive search and leadership at the C-Suite level such as CEO, CFO, CTO, CMO, CIO roles throughout the US, Europe, and South America.

I often get asked what my #1 piece of advice would be for students to get a job.

It was hard for me to just think of one, but after thinking a lot about my experience as a student as well as the experiences of the students that I’ve helped I’ve decided on the most important piece of advice. I have finally picked THAT ONE THING that if done will lead to you landing a job with your dream company. 

That one thing is becoming the ideal candidate for your dream company. 

Research shows that when a company hires the wrong person it costs them 1x - 5x that person’s first-year salary. 

So what I have found is that most recruiters are hiring the student that they feel would be the safer bet. 

When you do the research and become the ideal candidate then you lower their risk, which will increase your chances of receiving the job offer.

Not all weeks of your semester are created equal. There is one week in the semester that can change the trajectory for the rest of your college career. That week is the week of the career fair. 

If you are a college student that is currently looking for a job or an internship then attending the Career Fair is a MUST. 

I have seen students attend the Career Fair and end up receiving multiple internship offers by the end of the week. At the same time, I have also seen students attend the Career Fair without a game plan thinking that they did well, but they ultimately never hear back from the companies they spoke with. 

This is why in this episode I am going to give you the strategies that I teach my students to MASTER the Career Fair. The goal is to have you walk away with multiple on-campus interviews lined up which will lead to offers.

Tip #1: Plan Your Semester in Advance

• Put all of your tests and major assignments on your calendar
• Schedule the career fair and other events hosted by Career Services
• Schedule other major events 

Tip #2: Make a Good Impression With Your Professors 

• Introduce yourself to your professors and let them know that you are excited for the semester
• Sit in the front of the class and ask questions 
• Visit your professor’s office hours in the first two weeks 

Tip #3: Speed Date Student Organizations

• Throughout the first two weeks of the semester, student organizations are recruiting new members. Make sure to attend the info sessions
• Network with student organizations and find your niche
