08 Mar 2023 | E12 Life Story of Ad Legend | Paul Bainsfair | 01:46:37
Paul was just 14 years old when his father asked him what career he wanted to choose. Having grown up beguiled by the jet set life depicted in Martini TV ads, Paul simply mentioned “Advertising.” Other than having a liking for ads, Paul had no connection with the Ad world but he was determined to find out more. Luckily, at the time, Watford College was unique in being famous for being a place to study advertising, they took around 35 students a year and Paul managed to be one of them. Paul’s advertising career began at Saatchi & Saatchi in 1977, where he started as an account executive. As Paul describes, Saatchi & Saatchi were an agency that was on the up, they broke the rules and were very anti-establishment. 10 years later, he was made CEO and in charge of one of the biggest agencies in the world. A few years later Paul faced a decision, should he leave his well-paying CEO role at one of the world's most successful and coveted agencies, to start a new agency? Taking a leap of faith, Paul co-founded Bainsfair Sharkey Trott (BST) in 1990. BST was soon widely recognised as one of London’s most successful independent agencies during the 90s. In 1998, BST was eventually acquired by Omnicom and merged with TBWA, where Paul became Chairman of TBWA UK and President of TBWA Europe. Paul was responsible for 35 offices, 3,000 staff and TBWA was named Best Global Network in 2003 and 2006. After taking a sabbatical in 2008, Paul joined Iris, the UK’s largest marketing agency, first as Partner and CEO of Iris Europe and then as Chairman of Iris Worldwide. By 2011, Paul was contacted by the IPA committee as they were searching for a new Director General. Paul thought it over…. He decided it was the right time and liked the idea of having a point of view across the whole industry and an opportunity to give back. After a formal interview, he was offered the role of Director General of the IPA. Paul sits on the boards of Radio Joint Audience Research, The Advertising Standards Board of Finance, The Broadcast Advertising Standards Board of Finance, Broadcasters' Audience Research Board and Advertising Week (Europe). To hear Paul speak about his Mad Men days at Saatchi & Saatchi, meeting Steve Jobs for the first time and his story on becoming the ultimate Adman, listen to this episode of How I Became. Raised in the predominantly white and middle-class area of Pinner, Trevor was one of the few black students in his school. Trevor embraced this difference and saw it as an advantage. He became head boy at school and felt that being ‘different’ meant being unique and he thrived in his school environment and early life. In 1998, Trevor began his career at Ipsos in the post room, eventually becoming a graduate trainee. After that, he moved to Ernst and Young as a Business and Strategic Analyst, and then to AOL moving up to Head of Consumer Insights. In 2008, while backpacking up a mountain in Argentina, Trevor received a call from Facebook. He flew back for a 15-minute interview and, shortly after, had to cut his travels short in order to start his new role at Facebook a month later. During this time, Trevor met his mentor Blake, who has since guided him through his career. In 2012, Trevor experienced a major change when his mentor Blake called to tell him he had a new job role in New York and needed an answer that same day. Trevor returned to his desk and messaged his wife Ali, to which she replied, "I guess we're moving to New York then." Trevor is now Head of Marketing for Global Business Solutions, EU at TikTok. Trevor is also an Independent Non-Executive Director on the operational board of the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA), he is a mentor to the England Rugby Football Union (RFU) team and is on the global advisory board of Soho House Group. ‘Nothing is for granted’ – Andrew Dimitriou Leaving a dictatorship in Greece for Australia with nothing but the clothes on their backs, Andrew Dimitrou’s parents imbued in him the values of hard work and discipline that would shape his impressive and impactful career. Dismissing the modern notion of ‘work smart not hard’, Andrew worked his way to the top from the very bottom – an intern in the very company he would lead one day. Consistency, inquisitiveness, and passion are the markers of his success, as well as working at global marketing and communication services company WPP (with a 12.5-billion-dollar turnover and an excess of 100,000 employees across the world) for over 20 years. Going from account coordinator to account executive, to account director in two and a half years in his first role in New Business Development at Y&R New York, Andrew has perspective on all areas of the business. With a keen eye for innovative development and transformation, he keeps ahead of the game on digital programs and connected brands. Presenting a crystal-clear vision to his employees, he makes time to focus on culture, encouraging people to bring their whole selves to work. As well as the huge disruption of the Covid pandemic, Andrew was forced to hit the brakes on his 16-hour workdays due to a decline in health. Jumping off the very rat race that once inspired him, he uses a context of accountability to guide both his professional and personal life. He realises now he is no longer a player on the pitch, but a manager, taking both the increased responsibility and comfort which comes with a senior role. To hear about Andrew speak on the nuances of drive that can bring highs and lows and the importance of having the right intentions, listen to this episode of How I Became. In addition to currently being EMEA CEO for VMLY&R, Andrew: - Was shortlisted for EMEA CEO of the Year by Campaign magazine - Led Y&R Europe for 3 years, during which time the agency was Cannes Lions’ Regional Creative Network of the Year (2017) and Effies’ Effectiveness Network of the year (2016) - Managed WPP’s Red Fuse unit across Europe Topics discussed: - The parental mindset of hard work and multiple jobs - Struggles with cultural assimilation in the US - How to reckon with competition and win the game - Why fresh faces are the best faces - Where business meets art - How to cultivate a client relationship - The role of a president and CEO - How to make a great pitch - The importance of building more connected brands - How to manage technological disruption and thrive - The acceleration of online influence purchasing and augmented reality - Why pure intentions win over ladder climbing Chapters: (00:00:00) My Journey to CEO of VMLY&R (00:10:27) The Challenge of Fitting In (00:20:18) The Importance of Passion and Inquisitiveness (00:30:19) The Beginnings of an Entrepreneurial Journey (00:40:39) Integrated Big Global Assignment (00:51:02) Managing a Global Business (01:01:13) Managing Your Work Cadence (01:10:44) The Importance of Focus and Passion in Achieving Goals (01:20:39) Balancing Work and Family Life (01:30:05) Social Media Influencer Story

14 Jun 2023 | E17 | How Dyslexia Shaped the Career of Cannes Lions Chairman, Philip Thomas | 01:39:29
Phil's career has been an incredible rollercoaster ride spanning nearly three decades. Starting from humble beginnings as a writer, he has ascended to the position of Chief Executive at Ascential. Along the way, Phil has encountered numerous challenges and obstacles, but his unwavering determination and hard work have ultimately paid off. Today, he is not only a highly respected leader in his field but also a profound source of inspiration for many. During his time at an academic school, Phil struggled immensely, despite putting forth his best efforts. He was persistently advised to "work harder," unaware of the underlying reason for his difficulties: dyslexia. While studying photography in college, Phil found himself drawn to Africa, where he expanded his portfolio. Throughout his travels, he began writing articles, leveraging his photography knowledge. It was during this period that Phil discovered his passion for writing. His articles garnered widespread acclaim, leading to numerous accolades. Fueled by this newfound passion, Phil finally had the opportunity to pursue his lifelong dream career. Through sheer dedication, Phil achieved remarkable success, ultimately assuming the role of editor at 'Empire,' the United Kingdom's most popular movie magazine. His accomplishments in the publishing industry continued to flourish as he became the Managing Director of FHM worldwide, successfully introducing the renowned men's magazine to over 30 countries. However, Phil soon recognised that the magazine industry's fortunes were waning and sought out a new path. In search of a rapidly growing field, he made the pivotal decision to transition his career into events management. In 2006, Phil embarked on a significant career move when he was appointed CEO of Cannes Lions after a rigorous interview process. Despite lacking prior experience in advertising or event management, Phil faced an arduous challenge: transforming this event into a cultural phenomenon of genuine importance. Joining Emap at the young age of 23, Phil quickly climbed the ranks, ultimately reaching the position of Chief Executive at Ascential Futures, formerly known as Emap. His unwavering passion propelled him along this career trajectory. In addition to his professional achievements, Phil also serves as the Chair of Media Trust, a charity committed to enhancing diversity within the creative industries. Recognised as one of the Agents of Change for Gender Equality by the UK's Management Today magazine, he continues to make a profound impact in this regard. 05 Apr 2023 | E14 How To Buy Companies For Multi-Millions | The Story of Ad Association CEO Stephen Woodford | 01:39:15
Stephen’s interest in advertising came from his favourite subjects at school – art and economics – and so he looked for a career that combined the creative and the commercial. He also was an avid reader of the ads and used to make montages of the ads from magazines as part of his art course and this helped set his heart on working in advertising. Stephen studied economics and graduated in 1980, at a time when the economy was in recession and jobs were scarce. He applied for agency and marketing graduate training roles and found his start in a marketing at Nestlé. After a couple of years, he moved into the agency world, working at Lintas, then at a start-up agency and finally he joined WCRS for the first time in 1988. He left for Leo Burnett to be Deputy MD and then re-joined WCRS in 1994, becoming Managing Director and later CEO in 1998. The agency was something of a rollercoaster ride and he saw it through some lean and some great years, notably winning its biggest pitch ever, winning the National Lottery in 1998 and with an array of formidable campaigns for clients such as Carling, BMW, First Direct, 118 118 and Orange. The management team bought the agency from Havas in 2004 and relaunched it with a group of companies under the Engine brand. Stephen was then approached to join DDB and become Chief Executive there in 2007. DDB and its forerunner, BMP was agency he had admired most throughout his career, but it had suffered from management instability, and he helped to secure its position and get back to something like its old form. In 2011, a small-hours conversation in Cannes with James Murphy and David Golding started the ball rolling for DDB to buy adam&eve. Months of top-secret negotiations followed, but not so secret that rumours leaked ahead of the deal being done. Finally in 2012 the agencies merged and Stephen became Chair of adam&eveDDB. 18 months later, Stephen left to pursue other ventures, starting a financial services business, along with working at Next 15 Plc (who years later bought Engine coincidentally). Stephen became CEO of the Advertising Association in September 2016. The AA’s mission is ‘to promote the role and rights of responsible advertising - advertising that is trusted, inclusive and sustainable – and its value to people, society, businesses and the economy’. All the leading media owners and trade bodies are members of the AA. Stephens's past board roles include Deputy Chair of Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust and Chairman, Changing Faces, a facial disfigurement charity. He is also a past President of the IPA and of NABS. He is currently a Governor of Ravensbourne University, London and is on the board of the History of Advertising Trust. To hear Stephen’s advice on getting your business through a recession, trying to change the advertising industry for the better and on how to get a good agency back on form, listen to this episode of ‘How I Became’. 11 May 2023 | E16 | Mimi Turner: Bringing Innovation To LADbible, Lib Dems and LinkedIn | 01:54:11
Mimi Turner likes to make complicated things simpler. Over a career of twenty years she has found out - often the hard way - that while the price to be paid for this process of reimagination can be painful, the results will be transformational and spectacular. Driven by a desire to connect on ideas, Mimi became fascinated by journalism during her time at university and eventually became a science writer for the Sunday Times, where her engineering training came in handy deciphering complex journals and peer-reviewed papers. A few years later, she joined the Hollywood Reporter as the European Broadcast Editor in a field that helped her to understand the cogs and wheels of corporate strategy. After the paper made the shift into a more glossy Hollywood magazine, Mimi found herself interviewing celebrities such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Colin Firth and discovered that, while fascinating, it wasn’t the career fit for her. Mimi landed the role of Group Director of Communications at Northern & Shell, a British publishing group, and found herself managing reputation and communications issues in a publishing empire spanning television, newspapers, magazines and a lottery business. Just a few months into the role, Mimi was given a commercial task she had little experience in, and was left to sink or swim. After a lot of angst, and time spent wandering around in a strategy wilderness, she managed to complete the task by reinventing the problem and was utterly thrilled to make her first commercial deal. In 2014, Mimi became Marketing Director at LADbible. After the announcement, a friend of Mimi’s jokingly pointed out that she didn't have any experience in Digital Media and she realised that, while true, it was not something that had been afraid of going into the role. She knew that she could bring something different, that she could innovate and that she could rely on the people already in the business for their expertise in the core platform. Mimi visited the offices in Manchester, and after meeting the young LADbible team, was struck both by their generosity and the scale of their unique talents. She knew that although she was non-one’s idea of ‘a lad’ she felt comfortable with an incredible new family and was able to bring new ideas and approaches that helped put the brand on an elevated track. Coming from traditional media, Mimi did have to learn the world of social media humour and for a very, very, short time had a pretty good handle on football memes. Mimi became Director of Strategy, Messaging and Research at the Liberal Democrats in 2020 and is now Head of EMEA & Latin America, The B2B Institute at LinkedIn, a think-tank which helps to provide businesses with advice on long-term brand growth strategies. To hear Mimi share her advice on changing career roles, the pain of failing, a quantum physics-inspired mental model of storytelling and a love of innovation, listen to this episode of ‘How I Became’. 28 Jun 2023 | E18 | How To Heal From A Miscarriage, Build A Family and Become CEO of OMD UK | Laura Fenton | 01:53:33
In 2004, Laura joined OMD UK as a fresh-faced graduate, determined to make her mark on the industry. After years of hard work and dedication, she became the agency's first-ever female CEO in December 2020, a remarkable 16-year journey. The unique brand of leadership that Laura has displayed has enabled her to make remarkable progress and achieve incredible business success. After attending Leeds University, Laura wasn't sure what career she wanted to pursue. But when she met another graduate whilst travelling, he spoke about a placement programme in advertising that sparked her interest. When Laura returned from her travels, she went to WHSmith and bought a copy of Campaign Magazine. She flipped to the back to find the graduate jobs, one being for OMD. She applied and was invited to a graduate day, which was essentially like X-Factor. Graduates had to go through various rounds of interviews and presentations, and by the end of the day, everyone was split into two rooms - those going through and those not. Laura made it to the room that was going through and started as a graduate planner. Not long after, Laura found herself increasingly drawn to the CEO of OMD. She was captivated by the role and ambition, and soon made it her mission to one day become the CEO of the company. She was determined to make her dream a reality. Laura moved up the ranks, becoming Communications Planner to Associate Director and then a side step, becoming Client Services Director at Drum OMG. Laura would now be working with various agencies and clients, along with learning more about the creative and production side of advertising. Despite enjoying this new role, Laura felt as if she had hit a plateau. Laura would then go on to become Client Partner. Laura decided to take a chance and pitch the idea of her becoming the Managing Director of OMD to her boss. Despite her nerves, she went through with the meeting and was delighted when her boss agreed. This was one of the proudest moments of Laura's career. After years of dreaming, Laura's vision finally came true in December 2020 when she was appointed CEO of OMD. Although she was excited, she was also a bit apprehensive about taking on the role. She created a 90-day plan and began her journey as CEO in January 2021. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, Laura eventually found her footing and was able to get back into the office and interact with clients. She soon realised that this was exactly what she had been dreaming of. With each passing day, Laura felt more and more confident that she had made the right decision in taking on this role. Laura is a firm believer in showing that women and mothers can be successful in senior leadership roles while still being true to themselves. Laura is also an advocate for encouraging and supporting people from underrepresented groups to help shape the future of the media industry. To hear Laura’s advice on motherhood, achieving your dreams (no matter how big they are) and letting your authentic self shine, listen to this episode of ‘How I Became’.
