An impressive castle, which dates back to the early 13th century, has hosted royals and was the sight of a battle. This is a place of myths, legend, curses, and no fewer than nine ghosts. These include the tragic phantom of a woman cruelly left to die by her husband for failing to give him a son, a broken hearted trumpeter, a playful little girl, and the malevolent shade of a murderer hanged in the early 19th century.

Originally built as a children’s orphanage, before becoming a hospital, and then later a lunatic asylum. This building has bore witness to all manner of horrors, including the death of a small unloved child who was locked in a cupboard as a punishment, and forgotten about, only to be found dead later. Today knocking, banging, screaming, and sobbing is heard from within cupboards in that area, which is nicknamed the Naughty Boys Corridor.

It’s stood empty and abandoned for over 25 years, and has a growing reputation which has seen it regularly named in top 10 lists in recent years of the most haunted places to be found in the UK.

Full apparitions, and shadowy figures are seen all too often here and send people screaming in terror. Old wheelchairs and gurneys, remnants of the building’s past, move all on their own. People have reported the feeling of being pushed down and feeling sick and left physically shaking in some areas of this location. Whereas others have simply broken down in floods of tears, feeling utter despair and sadness for no apparent reason.

Tonight, let us head to one of the scariest places  in Liverpool and ask just how haunted is Newsham Park Hospital?

This time you join me on location in the wild, remote, Northumberland countryside, and we’re on a monster hunt as I search for an eight-foot-tall creature covered in thick hair, with glowing eyes, who causes the ground to shake whenever it is present. In early 2002 the nation's imagination was captured by the notion that this country park could be home to a bigfoot-type creature. Of course the area has a ghost, in the shape of the Bonny Lass of Belsay, and I will tell you of some of the other terrifying creatures that are said to lurk within England's most northern county.

In 1839 work commenced to build a tunnel over two miles long beneath the streets of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the north east of England, this was to get coal to the River Tyne. In later years it would provide shelter to the people of the city during German bombing raids during World War 2. It was then left empty, abandoned, and forgotten, before the damp, dark, eerie tunnel was reopened as a historic visitor attraction in more recent years.

Since reopening however, what it clear is that the tunnel wasn’t as empty as it first seemed, as the ghosts of the past remained underground. Waiting. In episode 102 we go to Northern Ireland and visit a once great house just a short 30 minute drive from Belfast. Built in the mid 1870s as a summer retreat, this mansion has been a home, a hospital, it aided the war effort during World War 2, and now it is sadly a ruined, vandalised, shadow of its former grandeur, facing an uncertain future. And it’s considered potentially the most haunted house in Northern Ireland.

In 1867, a psychiatric hospital was opened in Victoria, Australia, and for the next 126 years it would carry out horrendous medical procedures, without consent, or anesthetic. 

13,000 died at Aradale, and today there are countless reports of visitors being bitten and scratched by unseen assailants, and disembodied screams and cries are heard along the empty corridors. This location has a terrifying reputation, but is it earned?

Christmas is a wonderous time for those people who celebrate it, where families and friends get together and exchange presents, watch Christmas movies, play games, and gorge themselves silly on enormous roast dinners. It’s also a time, traditionally, of telling one another scary tales. The 1963 Christmas song, “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” even features the line “There'll be scary ghost stories”.

But while people, such as you, are having all this festive fun, could there be an unwelcome guest there, with them, in their very home?

On How Haunted? we’ve looked at castles, churchyards, jails, places that have bloody history, an eerie atmosphere, and are traditionally seen as locations that have the potential to be haunted. But this time out we’re going to focus on somewhere closer to home. Literally.

We continue Vampire Month by going in search of Dracula in an English seaside town which has fully embraced its status as the gothic capital of the UK. As we get ever closer to Halloween we will explore in depth why this place is so intrinsically linked to vampires, I will guide you on a tour of the locations with ties to Dracula, and we will look for ghosts and ghouls in some of the town’s oldest, and most iconic, structures.

Overlooking Dublin and its surroundings, upon the crest of 1250 foot Hill, surrounded by dense woodland sits an ominous ruin made from the stone of a 5000-year-old grave. This structure is steeped in rumour of satanic worship and human and animal sacrifice. A club, feared by locals met here regularly in the 18th century and indulged in all manner of sordid behaviour.

This has left its mark on the isolated old hunting lodge, which is now considered one of the most haunted locations anywhere on the Emerald Isle.

In a remote location, high above the North Sea, this castle has over 700 years of history, a turbulent past which has left it as a ruinous reminder of the violence and bloodshed that Northumberland has witnessed. This castle is said to be home to a number of spirits that were tied to the building in life, and most famously is the setting of a famous Northumbrian legend of a knight’s quest to save a maiden in distress.

In the heart of Cumbria in the north west of England is a glacial lake which holds a dark secret. In the mid-19th century a woman was held beneath the water’s surface by her lover until she was dead. Today she is seen walking from the lake, to the sheer horror of anyone who sees her. A tourist attraction in the heart of one of the scariest cities anywhere on earth, offering frightening fun to families who enjoy ghoulish and gory stories told by actors made up as characters from this city’s dark past. When the public have gone home, and this intentionally creepy building is left empty and silence, could there be more to it than meets the eye?

A popular holiday park built around a 13th century castle. This is not your typical location for a paranormal investigation, a holiday park full of luxury caravans and holiday makers spending their weekends boating on the lake, or playing on the arcades and fruit machines. What they’re all blissfully unaware of however is the darker side of this particular holiday park. The ghosts and ghouls that roam the older parts. These include the Victorian lady who roams the Rotunda, the small child seen within the summer house, and the man seen walking through the Italian gardens.

Part two of a two-part special sees us return to the Wheatsheaf public house in West Boldon, Tyne and Wear made news worldwide in late 2004 when a psychic night for charity was the catalyst for a series of events so incredible, and horrifying, that the Discovery Channel turned it into an episode for their “A Haunting” series, which was watched by over 20 million people.

The pub, which was named the most haunted in the UK in the same year, following these events, held a secret that had been locked away for a century, until Suzanne walked into the pub that night, and blew the whole thing wide open, much to the displeasure of a malevolent spirit which then threatened to kill her.

You'll hear the rest of the horrifying chain of events directly from Suzanne Gill, the psychic at the centre of the events, in the first part of an interview I conducted with her all about that night at the Wheatsheaf, and the weeks and months that followed.

What's more, you'll hear two very scary EVPs which appeared on our Zoom call, just after Suzanne had been telling me how the threatening ghost of Joseph had said he was going to kill her, when the audio wasn't heard at the time, but later was heard on recording equipment. Is this something explained away as a glitch on the audio, or something far darker?

A 15th century castle built on the site of a 1st century fort, is the haunt of a whole host of ghosts that were linked to this place in life, and have not been able to move on in death. A nursemaid who was accidently responsible for the death of the owner of the castle’s child was punished by her own life being taken, the ghost of a one-eyed woman, and the tormented soul of the treacherous nephew of the castle’s chief who was left to die of thirst in the dungeon and more, all remain here in perpetuity.

In episode 105 we continue our time across the pond in a city known the world over for the witch trials that occurred here in 1692. Fourteen women and five men were hanged, at least five people died while in disease infested prison while awaiting trial for witchcraft, and an 81 year old man was crushed to death. A grand estate built around a house built in 1693, and destroyed by fire in 1977 is said to be the haunt of shadowy figures belonging to those who knew the building so well in life. The stable block, added in 1811, is one of the more active areas. Why this is the case we’ll likely never know.

Phantom lights float around the house, and whispering is heard deep in the woodland. Dogs howl and bark within the grounds in the dead of night, and can be heard for miles around.

A popular railway museum, which opened in 1975, is said to be the haunt of a number of ghosts. Paul, a violent entity who lurks in the ladies toilets, George who remains within the Travelling Post Office, and still takes huge pride in his work, many years following his passing, a tall man in a top hat, a mischievous spirit who likes to mess up the gift shop after dark, the archives has been the scene of terrifying possessions, and a haunted train carriage which was once used as a mobile brother by the Nazis during the second world war.

 

Would I encounter any of these phantoms when my team and I joined another group to investigate this building after dark?

One of London’s best-known cemeteries, in fact it’s considered one of London’s magnificent seven Victorian graveyards. Dating back to 1839, there are believed to be around 170,000 bodies buried beneath the ground here. This graveyard has earned a frightning reputation in more recent years with stories of men clad in all black conducting dark rituals here. Spooks and specters flit about quickly between the 53,000 gravestones, and red eyed demons call this place home. Then most famously of all is the vampire that preys on its victims here, in England’s capital.

This time we return to Derby Gaol, a site of murder, suicide, executions, disease, suffering and despair. I continue by conversation with Richard Felix, and he tells me of an unbelievable occurrence he had at Halloween in front of a group of onlookers. This remarkable display of poltergeist activity was actually filmed by CCTV as well as one of those in attendance, so you can actually see it for yourself, as you’ll hear.

A 12th century castle, which has now stood alone, empty, and unused for over 350 years. In a remote valley in the wild’s of Northumberland this ancient fortress has seen reports of dark shadowy figures moving swiftly around the barely standing stonework. Strange glowing lights are seen moving around the ruin, and footsteps are heard walking on floorboards above visitor’s heads, despite there having been no floorboards there for centuries.

An 800-year-old former-inn regularly placed at the top of lists of the most haunted places in the world. A place so dark and dangerous that the once Bishop of Gloucester, the Rev John Yates, is said to have tried and failed to exorcise the building and was quoted in the Western Daily Press as saying it was "the evilest place I have ever had the misfortune to visit.”

A building constructed atop a 5000-year-old Pagan burial ground, and the skeletal remains of a woman and child were found beneath the floor of the inn, along with an iron dagger, leading to suspicions these unfortunate souls may have been killed as human sacrifices. The building is home to all manner of things that go bump in the night, but does it live up to its infamous reputation?

Best known for its link to the witch trials of 1612, which saw eight women and two men executed by hanging for witchcraft. Ever since this particular location in Lancashire has been linked to paranormal occurrences blamed for the witches who were accused and convicted of practising their dark arts right here.

Every Halloween ghost hunters flock to this location, for it has been said by many to be one of, if not the, most haunted place in the world.

A grand estate built around a house built in 1693, and destroyed by fire in 1977 is said to be the haunt of shadowy figures belonging to those who knew the building so well in life. The stable block, added in 1811, is one of the more active areas. Why this is the case we’ll likely never know.

Phantom lights float around the house, and whispering is heard deep in the woodland. Dogs howl and bark within the grounds in the dead of night, and can be heard for miles around.

A historic inn, in a remote, beautiful location is claimed to be not only the oldest pub in Wales, but the most haunted. This building is said to have been where 182 men, women, and children were trialed and sentenced to death, and their execution was carried out right here, within these centuries old stone walls. There is all manner of paranormal phenomena reported here, attributed to a friendly former barmaid who can be found in one of the bedrooms, a helpful vicar, then there is are more sinister phantoms of a judge and a hangman. And that’s just for starters.

The oldest building in Newcastle-upon-Tyne is the Castle Keep and Black Gate of the Castle Garth. Dating back almost 1000 years, the castle has long been considered to be the most haunted building in the city, with the best known resident being the Poppy Girl.

Built on foundations dating back to the Roman occupation of Britain, this castle, constructed in 1258, has been the focus of studies for 30 years, due to the incredible frequency of the paranormal occurrences. Occurrences including babies crying, children singing, and shadowy figures. An experienced team of paranormal investigators came to the castle to conduct an investigation, but no sooner had their ghost hunt begun, the phantoms within the Tapestry Room, the most active room in this 800 year old fortress, sent them fleeing into the wilderness of the Lake District as they feared for their lives.

With its imposing stones and intricate architecture, this structure has stood as a testament to human ingenuity and skill for millennia. Its construction occurred during the Neolithic and Bronze Age periods, making it one of the most fascinating, and best known, archaeological sites in the world.

Constructed upon a street with Roman origins, number 35 Stonegate was built in 1482 and has a fascinating history having been a publishing house, a psychic museum, a haunted house offering self-led tours and overnight paranormal investigations, and now it’s a clothes shop. Believed to be home to 14 spirits, this is one of the most haunted places in York, and one of the phantoms that call this place home is believed to be very, very dangerous indeed.

In 1839 work commenced to build a tunnel over two miles long beneath the streets of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the north east of England, this was to get coal to the River Tyne. In later years it would provide shelter to the people of the city during German bombing raids during World War 2. It was then left empty, abandoned, and forgotten, before the damp, dark, eerie tunnel was reopened as a historic visitor attraction in more recent years.   Since reopening however, what it clear is that the tunnel wasn’t as empty as it first seemed, as the ghosts of the past remained underground. Waiting. One of the most haunted houses in America, if not the world, this previously unassuming property was the scene of a mass murder back in November of 1974, which appears to have kickstarted some absolutely horrifying paranormal activity, including slime oozing from the walls, family members levitating in their bed, and a demonic red-eyed pig monster. After just 28 days the family fled their new home and the house on Ocean Avenue, Long Island has lived in infamy ever since.

But is this house genuinely as haunted as we would be led to believe?

A popular railway museum, which opened in 1975, is said to be the haunt of a number of ghosts. Paul, a violent entity who lurks in the ladies toilets, George who remains within the Travelling Post Office, and still takes huge pride in his work, many years following his passing, a tall man in a top hat, a mischievous spirit who likes to mess up the gift shop after dark, the archives has been the scene of terrifying possessions, and a haunted train carriage which was once used as a mobile brother by the Nazis during the second world war.

Would I encounter any of these phantoms when my team and I joined another group to investigate this building after dark?
