Phylloxera
00:18:55
***CORRECTION: The soils in the Mosel valley are slate. Phylloxera does not like slate soils. For some reason I say schist in this episode.
Welcome back! This is a subject that comes up again and again every episode and that is Phylloxera, but what is it? This episode we are going to deep dive into the history of the French Wine Blight. Where this little bug came from, what it is up to today and how we adapted.
My Sources for this show are:
The Oxford Companion to Wine, 4th Edition by Jancis Robinson.

South African Wine Law
00:26:10
Here it is, another wine law episode!
I do spend quite a bit of time pontificating about how complicated the wine law is in South Africa before I get into the real topic itself... but suffice to say every time that I sit down and study this topic I get a headache. Hopefully if you are doing some studying this will help you on your way to understanding this region :)

British Columbia
00:24:28
Welcome back nerds! This episode not only do we get to learn all about the emerging and exciting wine regions of British Columbia but we also get to back in time and glimpse into the angst ridden teenage years I spent on the West Coast... but mostly we just talk about the wines!

Chablis
00:25:39
House Wine is back and we are going to finish off Season 2 with some fun wines!
I took a bit of an unannounced hiatus to catch up on life and get reorganize but now I have some more episodes ready to go and I am looking forward to a new posting schedule and getting back to podcasting!
So have you ever wondered about the different kinds of Chablis? What makes Petit Chablis different from just plain old Chablis? Why people go crazy over this wine ... We are going to talk about it all, and in this episode we even get monks! What a way to kick things back off.

Cyprus
00:22:45
This episode is called Cyprus but it really should be called Cyprus AKA Commandaria, the story of the worlds oldest wine still made today. We cover a lot in 23 minutes with this one - The Crusades, Monks, PDO laws, native grapes but I think that the real take away here is that if you come across wine from Cyprus drink it, because every time someone has a wine from Cyprus you are having a wine from one of the first places in the world to ever make wine, and that is f***ing cool.

Bandol
00:23:52
Welcome back! We are strapping on our favourite bathing suits and heading to the beach with a bottle of rose or a cooler of rosé, who am I kidding?
Yep it's summer and we are going to talk about the Bandol today - so it's all things rosé.... and also don't forget about the very heavy tannic reds that they make here too, and whites. This episode is a deep dive on one of the best AOP's in Provence and what makes this wine special and delicious.
Of course I used some fabulous resources to help me out:

Episode 1: French Wine Law
00:21:27
Welcome to the first episode of House Wine!
I told my study group that I was ready to publish the podcast and my friends were so happy and supportive, they asked "What are you leading with? Something exciting? A real hook? Napa? Barolo?" and I answered, "Yes, French Wine Law!"
My one friend gave me look and said, "Way to go Rachael... way to hook them in..." We all laughed.
French wine law is exciting! It is important. And it makes it so much easier to know wine and buy wines when you know how they are labelled and where they come from, so in my mind, it was the logical and best place to start. And if you are a big wine nerd like me, it is fun.
In this episode I used one primary resource:
The Oxford Companion to Wine, 4th Edition, Jancis Robinson, 2015
Welcome to a crash course is Alsace! It's a lot of information in 30 minutes, and I talk way more about history in this episode than I will in following episodes, but I think it's worth it.
In this episode I used three books:
The Oxford Companion to wine, 4th Edition by Jancis Robinson.
The Wine Bible, 2nd Edition by Karen MacNiel.
and Wine and War, by Donald and Petie Kladstrup
The wines I talk about are:
The Wines of Marcel Deiss : https://www.marceldeiss.com/en/
The Wines of Zind Humbrecht: http://www.zindhumbrecht.fr/en/
And Finally, while I was recording this episode I was sipping on a glass of the Trimbach Pinot Blanc, it was super delicious! https://www.trimbach.fr/en/alsace-wines/

Napa
00:52:07
Hi guys, welcome back to house wine, and my longest episode yet: Napa!
I'm really excited and happy about this one, you get a little more exposition here and some anecdotes about how much I love this region. This was inspired by the recent fires, so I say it in the episode, but now is the time to support California, and you will get the skinny on why when you listen - so this episode is best enjoyed with a bottle of California wine.
If you want to request an episode or have a question you can email at housewinepodcast@gmail.com
Rate it, like it, give it some stars, this is a 100% independant podcast so it goes a long way!
I used some great books for this episode:
Napa Then and Now, by Kelly White
The Judgement of Paris, by George M Taber.
The World Atlas of Wine, 7th Edition by Jancis Robinson and Hugh Johnson
The art is done by local Toronto Artist and Illustrator Kelly Lauren and she is on instagram as @klylauren.

Loire Valley Part 1 - The Pays Nantais
00:37:18
Welcome back!
I'm really happy this week to start a what will be a four part series over the next few weeks on the Loire Valley, one of the most diverse wine regions in France. To do it justice, it just had to be split up into sections. Which means that this episode is all about the Pays Nantais, and one of by favorite wines: Muscadet.
Before I dive into the content though, I address the New York Times article that has the wine world on edge right now, and for good reason. Last week more than twenty women came forward to expose sexual misconduct and assault in the Court of Master Sommeliers Americas. It's a heavy topic but it needs and deserves to be addressed. The link to the article is below:
As usual this episode I used my trusty copy of The Oxford Companion to Wine, 4th Edition by Jancis Robinson.
I also used a great resource, https://loirevalleywine.com/ Check it out, they have a great website.
I talk about a few wines in this episode:
The Wines of Guy Bossard and Domaine de l'Ecu: https://domaine-ecu.com/
I was drinking a bottle of Chateau de La Ragotiere: https://www.freres-couillaud.com/les-vins/chateau-de-la-ragotiere-en/
And I mention the wines of Gadais Pere et Fils: http://www.gadaispereetfils.fr/domaine/domaine-en.html
House wine is an independant podcast written, narrated and produced by me, Rachael. So if you like it add some stars, some likes, or leave a comment it all goes a long way. If you would like to request an episode or make a correction you can email me at housewinepodcast@gmail.com
The art was done by Kelly Lauren, @klylauren on instagram, she is an amazing illustrator.
Hi everyone, I'm back! After a bit of recovery from a pretty insane week I am super excited to talk about Anjou Saumur with all of you.
Let's talk about what Natural Wine is. Let's talk about Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc and regions that make some of the best biodynamic wines of the world. Also what is biodynamic wine? Let's figure it out!
Books I used for this episode:
The Oxford Companion to Wine 4th Edition, by Jancis Robinson
1001 Wines to Try Before You Die, Neil Beckett

Here are the wines I talk about:
Le Domaine des Baumards http://www.baumard.fr/

We are back with the third part of the Loire Valley where we dive into the complex and wonderful AOP's of Vouvray and Chinon and also talk about some sparkling wines for the first time.
Some of the wines that I mention in this episode are:
Charles Jouget: http://en.charlesjoguet.com/philosophy.html
and Ambroisie Vouvray... for which I cannot find a website.

We made it to the final part of this four part series on the Loire Valley. This week we are diving into the Central Vineyards, home to some of the most iconic white wine appellations in all of France: Sancerre and Pouilly Fume, along with a whole host of their less famous sibling AOP's. We are in the home of a grape that needs no introduction, but gets one anyways, Sauvignon Blanc.
In Podcast specific news, moving forward this will be a weekly show with episodes posted every Monday. So if there is a topic you would like me to cover, please do not be shy. You can reach out an email the podcast at housewinepodcast@gmail.com I would love to know what you would like to learn about.

Hello wine friends and welcome back to House Wine!
This week we are going to look at Sparkling Wine, the styles of sparkling wine and how it gets made. Yes, we even touch on if you can put still wine in your Soda Stream. We also go into a brief history about the early days of Champagne and everyone's favorite Monk: Dom Perignon.
The five main processes of making wine sparkle are broken down and we talk about which countries and which wines are using which.
Of course as source material I use:
The Oxford Companion to Wine, 4th Edition by Jancis Robinson and Champagne, by Peter Liem
I reference in passing a few wines but don't go into a great amount of detail but if you would like to reference what they are, it is:
Dom Perignon, by Moet et Chandon: https://www.domperignon.com/us-en/
Veuve Clicquot: https://www.veuveclicquot.com/
Paul Bara: https://www.champagnepaulbara.com/en/

I also briefly mention Spumante Bambino, which has no website. Trust me, you don't want it anyways!

South Africa
00:41:26
Hi wine friends!
This week we are talking about South Africa. This month the South African Government banned the sale of alcohol in the country due to Covid-19, so it seemed like it would be a good a time as any to dive into the history, the grapes and some of the reasons you should be picking up a bottle of South African wine.
We go deep into the history this episode and how and why they started growing grapes around The Cape. It gets a little intense, but as I mention several times in the episode itself, we try to end it on a high note, with a list of Black Owned South African Wineries and how you can support BIPOC winemakers.
Need the list of Black South African Winemakers to grab a bottle? Here it is: https://www.wosa.co.za/Sustainability/Socially-Sustainable/BEE/Black-owned-Brands/
Want to know BIPOC wines being made outside South Africa? Here is a great list that Wine Enthusiast put together: https://www.winemag.com/2020/06/08/black-owned-wine-guide/
This week, I gush over my main source for this episode: https://www.wosa.co.za/home/
And of course I leaned on my favorite resource of all time ever, The Oxford Companion to Wine, 4th Edition by Jancis Robinson. <3
I speak briefly about Apartheid in South Africa, but don't go deep into what it was or the social effect. I talk about it in the context of ways that it affected wine, but if you would like to know more, here is a resource about it: https://www.history.com/news/apartheid-policies-photos-nelson-mandela (Yes, I realize this is the History Channel, but I read it and I think for someone looking for a timeline of events, this article sums it up.)
I mention some wonderful wineries:
Land of Hope: https://www.landofhope.co.za/
Seven Sisters: http://www.sevensisters.co.za/

Last week I err... spilled Sake all over my keyboard and lost my recordings, thankfully I only lost two! The good news is that I was due for an update and have brand new recording software, and I think it shows :)
So, sorry to everyone for the delay in episodes!
This week we are going to be digging into the Northern Rhone and getting a closer look at Syrah, Viognier, Rousanne and Marsanne. Along with some of the AOP's that make this these wines iconic.
Domaine du Coulet and Matthieu Barret: http://domaineducoulet.com/domaine-du-coulet/
Guigal: https://www.guigal.com/en/
Stephane Ogier: http://www.stephaneogier.fr/
And as per usual I used two books by Jancis Robinson:
The Oxford Companion to Wine, 4th Edition
The World Atlas of Wine, 8th Edition.
House Wine is an independent podcast, if you want to support the show the best way to do that is like, subscribe and rate. An even better way to show your support is to tell a friend you love to drink wine with about it.

Chateau Neuf du Pape
00:32:58
Hi friends, welcome back!
This week our House Wine is Chateau Neuf du Pape and we will be looking into all the history, grapes and styles that make this wine region amazing. There are some characters here who put this wine region on the map so we go quite deep in to history on this episode. We also deep dive into the 18 Grapes than can be part of this blended wine.
I talk about a few producers here:
Chateau Beaucastel: http://www.beaucastel.com/en/
Famille Perrin: https://m.familleperrin.com/12PCF6YRJ7
For Sources, I used my very trusty Oxford Companion to Wine, 4th Edition. The World Atlas of Wine 8th Edition and also https://www.chateauneuf.dk/

The Southern Rhone
00:38:47
Welcome back! This week our house wines are from the Southern Rhone.
The Southern Rhone is an incredibly varied and diverse region with a lot going on. And we cover a lot of it in this episode. If you haven't checked out the episode last week about Chateauneuf du Pape, please give that a listen before this episode because we reference it quite a bit and it will provide a lot of context for the Cotes du Rhone, Gigondas and Vacqueras, and some of their less famous friend appellations.
We also go full in and talk about rosé and the sweet wines of Rasteau and Muscat Beaumes de Venice.
So if you have ever found yourself wondering what GSM is or how dry IS a dry rosé, then I can't wait to share this episode with you.
I used my favorite book, the Oxford Companion to Wine, 4th Edition by Jancis Robinson. i also looked at maps in the World Atlas of Wine 8th Edition, by Jancis Robinson. I also used the website https://www.chateauneuf.dk/ and Decanter Magazine.
If you are interested in any of the wines I talk about in this show:
OK that last one has no website of it's own but there is a whole blog that just reviews Costco Wines.
This is an independent podcast, written, narrated and produced by me, Rachael so if you are going to do the Gigondas Pepsi challenge then make sure to review and rate and I will see you next week.
If you spotted a correction or would like to request and episode you can reach out at housewinepodcast@gmail.com or on instagram @housewinepodcast.

Carbonic Maceration
00:31:34
Welcome back wine friends, this week our House Wine isn't so much a region or a specific wine but it is a style of wine. It's a winemaking technique that may be as old as wine itself.
It's time to put our lab coats on, look side long at a beaker and pretend we are scientists because the time has come to talk about all things Carbonic Maceration.
What are flavonoids? Who is Louis Pasteur and what did he do to the yeasts? It's all here. Of course I couldn't do it alone, this is a complex subject and I leaned on the following resources:
The Oxford Companion to Wine, 4th Edition by Jancis Robinson. http://www.wineanorak.com/winescience/carbonic_maceration.htm
I also downloaded this ebook: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/B9780123849274000014
I don't really talk about any specific wines this week, but I do reference wine from these regions:
Beaujolais. Southern Rhone. Roussillon. Languedoc. Rioja.

Beaujolais
00:35:50
Welcome back wine friends, this week our House Wine is all wines Beaujolais. From the light bodied and quaffable, but ever scandalous, Beaujolais Nouveau all the way the Cote du Py in Morgon, this episode goes deep. We learn that the Gang of Four is not just another post punk band and that not all press is good press, especially when there are 1,000,000 bottles of wine on the line.
I was very saddened this week by the passing of Steven Spurrier, truly a larger than life legend in the wine world and I don't do justice at the top of the show relaying his contributions - so if you would like to know more the words of one of his friends and colleagues Jancis Robinson best serve his memory: https://www.jancisrobinson.com/articles/steven-spurrier-1941-2021
My resources for this show are as follows:
The Oxford Companion to Wine, 4th Edition by Jancis Robinson The World Atlas of Wine 8th Edition by Jancis Robinson. https://www.kermitlynch.com/ https://vinepair.com/articles/somms-love-cru-beaujolais/

Franciacorta
00:28:42
Welcome back again friends, our house wine this week is Franciacorta. Just like that out of no where we are learning about an Italian wine region for the first time.
Before we talk Franciacorta, I do a pretty lengthly intro about people working in the wine industry with disability. If you only want to hear about wine, then you can fast forward to around the 10 minute mark.
We go into all things history and learn about why this region is called what it is called, spoiler alert, it has something to do with monks. And we go through all the possible styles of Franciacorta, and learn that Saten is all about the texture of this wine and has nothing to do with demons.
I was lucky enough to have lots of great resources for this episode: The Oxford Companion to Wine, 4th Edition by Jancis Robinson https://www.decanter.com/wine-news/franciacorta-erbamat-new-grape-variety-364417/ https://www.decanter.com/learn/advice/what-is-saten-wine-ask-decanter-383082/ https://www.winemag.com/2018/03/12/franciacorta-italys-hidden-gem/ https://www.franciacorta.net/en/
As I promised, here is the link for the 'F for Franciacorta' movie: http://film.franciacorta.net/en/
I also talk a lot about producers! Here they all are:

Minisode: The Pinot Family Tree
00:10:30
Welcome back wine nerds!
Ever wonder what Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon have in Common? Spoiler Alert, it's Pinot Noir. This week we do a mini deep dive into the Pinot Family Tree and highlight the connection between some of the most famous grapes out there.
As I transition back into working full time I really want to continue putting out episodes weekly. That means that there may be a Minisode that pops up every 4-5 weeks so I can continue to do my due diligence when it comes to researching and fact checking my full length episodes.
This week my number one resource is:

Lambrusco
00:29:19
Welcomes back to House Wine, because as I say at the top of this episode - which ever wine you have in your glass that is your house wine.
This week I made the classic mistake of thinking that I knew and understood a region without actually having done much reading or research on it, ha! A testament to the fact that there is always something more to learn and understand about wine. Also a lesson to myself not to just assume I know something. I learned so much this week.
Why is Lambrusco Italy's quintessential food wine? How can there be so many varieties of the same grape? Is it sweet or is it dry? This is the official Lambrusco demystified.
I leaned heavy on some resources this week, I really needed to hit the books to make this one happen:
The Oxford Companion to Wine by Jancis Robinson
Wine Grapes by Jancis Robinson, Julia Harding and Jose Vouillamoz
The World Atlas of Wine 8th Edition by Jancis Robinson
and Native Italian Wine Grapes by Ian D'Agata
I mention some producers:

Prosecco
00:28:27
Welcome back wine nerds!
Have you ever been to a celebratory event, been handed a flute with wine in it, cheers-ed and then wondered, "Hmm, what is this?" Well then you have absolutely had the worlds most popular sparkling wine. Move over Champagne because today we are going to talk about the worlds most popular sparkling wine by volume - Prosecco.
Who makes it? How do they make it and where? All explained.
I relied pretty heavily on some amazing source materials for this one:
The Oxford Companion to Wine by Jancis Robinson
Wine Grapes by Jancis Robinson, Julia Harding and Jose Vouillamoz
The World Atlas of Wine 8th Edition by Jancis Robinson

Minisode: Keeping it in the Cabernet Family.
00:09:45
Welcome back wine nerds!
You have probably heard of Cabernet (... franc?) and you have probably heard of Sauvignon (... blanc?). Actually, I know you have heard about them because they are the main topics of at least two shows already; but what about the greater family of Cabernet and Sauvignon? How does Carmenere fit in?
This is our ramp up to a three part series on Bordeaux, so let's get to know some of the grapes that make some of the world's most famous wine.
My favourite resource for learning about grapes and grape origins is:

Bordeaux Part 1: Médoc
00:35:31
Hi wine nerds!
Welcome to Episode 20! I'm so happy that this little passion project has made it to twenty episode that I decided to celebrate by talking about one of my favourite celebratory wines: Bordeaux.
Maybe you're like me and you sit awake at night wondering about the history and evolution of French wine into the international market.. or maybe you are sipping on a Pinot Noir somewhere and thinking, "Hmmm... I kind of prefer wines with a little more body." Either way this episode is for you.
Just sit back and think of England.
I used some great resources for this episode:
The Oxford Companion to Wine by Jancis Robinson.
The Complete Bordeaux by Stephen Brook.
Inside Bordeaux by Jane Anson.
Jane Anson is a legend! Check her out!
I talked about so many Chateaux this week that I am not going to name them all. Instead I will leave you with this:
But don't forget that Chateau Chasse Spleen in the Moulis en Medoc is not part of the 1855 classification!

Bordeaux Part 2: Graves
00:25:40
Welcome back wine nerds.
If you have ever wondered if it is possible to reference both Star Trek and Lord of the Rings in one 25 minute podcast that covers everything south of the city of Bordeaux and west of Garonne River... well the answer is yes.
This week we go over Bordeaux Blanc, some of the lesser known white grapes of France and we ask the question... should Sauvignon Blanc be oaked?
I use the help of some very good books to make it though this episode:
The Oxford Companion to Wine by Jancis Robinson.
The Complete Bordeaux by Stephen Brook.
Inside Bordeaux by Jane Anson.
I also talk about some pretty world renowned wines:
Chateau Haut Brion: https://www.haut-brion.com/

Bordeaux Part 3 : The Right Bank
00:29:45
If you have been sitting at home waiting for the day when I begin comparing grapes to the fame level of early 2000's pop stars then you are in luck, or maybe you will just roll your eyes when you realize that I am a millennial.
This episode is all about Merlot, a grape that has had a lot of ups and downs over the last twenty years but has never left the hearts and minds of wine makers on the Right Bank of Bordeaux, though it was shunned in California for the better part of the 21st century.
Why does a grape that get's so much hate make one of the worlds most expensive wines?
Well... we're going to get into it.
As usual, I got help:
The Oxford Companion to Wine by Jancis Robinson.
The Complete Bordeaux by Stephen Brook.
Inside Bordeaux by Jane Anson.
I talk about a lot of wineries, so here is the list of all the Saint Emilion Classified Chateaux:

BONUS: The 1855 Classification of Médoc and Graves
00:12:34
Hi friends!
Wine Nerd Alert: You have to be seriously wanting to know a lot about Bordeaux to listen to this episode. This is a pretty unnecessary bonus episode, but as I say at the top of the show this week - this was really one of my big inspirations for starting the show in the first place. I used to study a lot by recording myself and then listening to lists of regions and Grand Cru's etc...
Also it's out of sync! I meant to post this after the Medoc episode but never got around to it.
This Bonus is meant more for if and when you are actively in the process of studying wine for a certification rather than general learning. If you want to fall asleep or just like the sound of my voice there may be some value too.

Welcome back! Today we are longing for the sun drenched Adriatic Coast as we dream of rolling out our beach towels, kicking off our flip flops and taking in the Italian Seaside. What did you bring to the beach with you? A cold bottle of Verdicchio Castelli de Jesi? Perfect.
(I haven't been on vacation in so long!)
Le Marche may not be home to any of the rockstars of Italian wine like Chianti or Barolo but is is absolutely worth a closer look.

Minisode: Pliny the Elder
00:11:31
Hi wine friends!
We are once again doing a deeper dive into history with a minisode on Pliny the elder.
Ever wonder what wine was considered the most beneficial to your health in Ancient Rome or why we don't still drink Falerian, well ... I might not have the answer to the last question BUT today is all things Roman wine history as we look at why Pliny the Elder was such a cool "guy".
I needed some help getting all my facts straight for this episode and I leaned on some good references:
The Oxford Companion to Wine, 4th Edition by Jancis Robinson
I also talk about the Russian River Brewing Company: https://www.russianriverbrewing.com/

Sicily
00:25:23
Hi friends, welcome back! I now release the show on Tuesdays, so if you were thinking that I missed the release day yesterday... well, I did. BUT it was intentional.
Ever wanted to try wine from a still active volcano? Maybe you have been sitting at home wondering to yourself about the origins of Carricante, or just hoping that one day Kylie Minogue will start making wine - well it's all here in this weeks episode on the dry wines of Sicily. Just to clarify, Kylie Minogue is not making wines in Sicily, she is making wine in Australia which makes more sense, but it somehow snuck it's way into the episode today.
I have some great resources:
The Oxford Companion to Wine, 4th Edition by Jancis Robinson

Marsala & Pantelleria
00:26:11
Hi wine friends! The schedule is a little out of sorts this week so I am releasing this on Friday and we will be back not next Tuesday but the Tuesday after with regular schedules episodes.
Marsala may not be the most popular wine now, but it used to be! I call it in this episode "A wine that peaked in high school" which is not really an unfair analogy. From being the wine of kings to a wine that most people only use for cooking, it has had a wild ride, but deserves a bit of recognition none the less.
This is the story of one of the worlds least popular wines and how it came to be so.
I used some great resources:
The Oxford Companion to Wine, 4th Edition by Jancis Robinson
Native Wine Grapes of Italy by Ian D'Agata
Wine Grapes by Jancis Robinson, Julia Harding and Jose Vouillamoz

Mendoza
00:36:50
I'm back!
I took a spontaneous and unannounced break for the month of July but now I am back and we are going to be covering a bunch of great topics in the next couple months from Mendoza to Madeira.
Today we are getting right into it with the history if winemaking in Argentina and then we take a deep dive into the most important winemaking region of Argentina and that is Mendoza.
So if you have ever picked up a bottle of $15 wine and looked found that you were drinking a wine from Argentina - this is an episode about how that wine got into your hands.
I used some great resources this week:
The Oxford Companion to Wine by Jancis Robinson

"The Rest" of Argentina
00:26:22
Yes, it is true they are making wine outside of Mendoza in Argentina, and once you get outside the main areas, they are making way more than just Malbec!
In this episode we talk about Salta and history and origins of Torrontes, Argentina's true native grape (it's not actually Malbec)
Then we go south and dive into the wines of Patagonia, the country's most up and coming wine region that has been attracting some of the biggest names in the world of wine.

Madeira
00:31:07
Welcome back!
Madeira is one of the most historic and (in my opinion!) most fascinating wine regions that there is. An uninhabited subtropical island off the coast of Morocco that ended up making some of the worlds longest lived and most expensive wines, Madeira is full of contradiction right down to the way that it is made.
If you are a nerd like me and enjoy the history and ups and downs of the worlds famous sweet wines, then this episode is for you.
Of course, I did quite a bit of research to make this episode and my sources are:
The Oxford Companion to Wine 4th Edition by Jancis Robinson.
I also talk about some of the people that make these wines:

No.
But they make it from wine, so it counts!
This episode we talk about all the things that make this one of the most famous and popular Eau de Vie's on in the world. From music, to movies, to Tom Cruise and alchemists we really cover a lot here. Yes, we also get into regions, subzones, grapes and aging requirements of course.

Washington State
00:33:24
Welcome back to House Wine and the beginning of an all new season!
After declaring to the world that Cognac was wine I seemingly vanished off the face of the internet... I put away my podcasting pillow fort and went into serious study mode in preparation for a wine exam.
Today we are going to talk about all things Washington State. I never felt quite at ease with Washington State Wine and so I made it a mission to understand this wine region and get to love it, and I really did come out of the research for this episode with a deeper appreciation for these wines; for the climate, the grapes and the people who make them.
If you have ever wondered what Chianti and Southern Washington have in common (said no ever) or if you have ever longed for the path less traveled and the wide open spaces of the west, than Washington State has the wine for you.
(Aside: I grew up on the West Coast and have a life long fascination with true crime as a result. Washington, Oregon and British Columbia all have some of the highest rates of murder and missing people in the world. I recommend a Washington State Riesling paired with your favourite true crime podcast)

00:29:06
It's time for us all to dive into another episode on Wine Law. I know how much you all love wine law :)
Spain has a lot of it! Ever wonder how a fascist regime can stunt the development of wine regions ( I mean I guess we already have done Italian Wine Law...) Ore maybe you have wondered how many aging requirements just one country can have? Wonder no more! This week we get infuriated by too many classifications, and start mis pronouncing our way through Spain.

Priorat
00:32:50
This week we are taking on one of Spains most prestigious wine regions and that is the region of Priorat. Just in case you were left asking yourself last week if Spanish Wine Law could get any more complicated, well this episode is here to answer that question, and the answer is: YES!
Priorat had it's own unique labelling terms, aging definitions and vine age definitions as well as it is part of Catalunya, an autonomously governed region inside Spain that has it's own rules and regulations regarding wine. FuN!

00:27:05
Better late than never! I wanted to have this episode out before New Years so we could all talk about sparkling wine together but alas... I had a lazy holiday and I decided not to continue this season until the New Year. So Happy New Year I hope you had all the wine, all the mulled wine and all the sparkling wine!
This is Cava Part 1. What can you expect? History, Grape Profiles and Producers in this episode. Cheers and you see next week for part 2 where we talk about geography, soil and RULES! Fun!
I used some great resources here:
The Oxford Companion to Wine, 4th Edition by Jancis Robinson
The World Atlas of Wine 8th Edition by Jancis Robinson and Hugh Johnson.
I also talk about some great wines:

Cava Part 2: Classic Penedès v. Cava
00:31:02
Ok, most of this episode is dedicated to Cava - all the things that make Cava what it is that we didn't cover last episode: Appellations, ageing requirements and sweetness levels of Cava all make an appearance in this episode.
But we can't finish talking about Cava without wading through the quagmire of conflicting information that answers the question, "What is Classic Penedès and why is it not Cava?"
I would say that it is a question for the ages... but these appellations and rules are so fresh they have rules for wines that haven't even had the time to be made yet.
So, as promised this is a deep dive into Cava. If you were not satisfied at the end of the last episode, here you go!
I used some great resources for this:
The Oxford Companion to Wine, 4th Edition by Jancis Robinson
And of course I mention a few key producers (though we are more producer heavy in Cava part 1) :
Gramona: https://www.gramona.com/en/

Armagnac
00:29:12
Just like when we talked about Cognac, I will preface this episode with saying that I know this is not a wine. BUT, Armagnac like it's more famous younger brother Cognac does in fact come form grapes and therefor it has a spot here on house wine. Not only that but there is a lot to unpack here. Including history and Cardinals (which are basically fancy monks!)

Cahors
00:29:16
Yes, Cahors. The region that launched a thousand Malbecs. This week we are talking about what is in my opinion one of the most underrated, undervalued wines that France has to offer. This region has been copied, counterfeited, and undermined since Roman times. If you have ever said that you don't like Malbec, I am personally challenging you to take it back in this episode.
