Weekly Horror Podcast 302

Just a quick reminder that we’ve launched our companion podcast/newsletter, “Classics Weekly,” a brand-new Podcast/Newsletter devoted to classic films. Our second episode, devoted to “Singin’ in the Rain,” launched this week. It’s very similar in format to Horror Weekly, but since it’s only one film each week, we can go more in-depth with trivia and commentary. The third episode, “The Jazz Singer (1929),” comes out next week, with many more to follow, Sign up for the newsletter or subscribe to the podcast at https://www.classicsweekly.com

In addition, the latest issue of Horror Monthly is now on sale. Check out https://horrormonthly.com for links to pick it up in print or as an eBook. This month includes all the usual reviews, 37 films’ worth, as well as a retrospective on the five original “Planet of the Apes” films PLUS a short story!

But this week, we’ll watch another batch of all-new films. We’ll start with the latest entry in the VHS anthology series, “VHS Beyond.” We’ll get all sexy with “Strange Darling,” get pregnant with “Apartment 7A,” and then avoid the kids in “Children of the Pines.” Lastly, we’ll have a fun little road trip with “Blood Star.” Of course, we’ll also squeeze in a few short films.

Don’t miss out on our next members-only edition of the newsletter, coming toward the end of October. Paid subscription info can be found at https://www.horrorweekly.com/

10 May 2019The Invisible Man, The Tunnel, and Late Phases / Night of the Wolf00:39:09

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzfeuTUXblc]

Intro

Welcome to Kevin and Brian’s Horror Bulletin podcast recorded live from the vampire’s crypt, where each week, we cover the latest horror news, shorts, a classic Universal horror, and two creature-feature reviews. This week, after the news, we’ll cover the Universal Studios movie “The Invisible Man” from 1933, the contemporary classic “The Tunnel” from 2011, discussion of the short film, “The iMom”, and “Late Phases” from 2014 which is now titled “Night of the Wolf” or “Night of the Lone Wolf”. Turn up the volume and lean in close. Here we go...

News Features

  1. An artist going by the name “kreimkouk” has posted a video of what may be the most amazing Lego horror sculpture ever. Displayed in a seven-and-a-half-minute YouTube video, the work appears to be a large house decked out for Halloween. Then it opens wide, displaying two halves of rooms featuring scenes and characters from a plethora of horror movies including Gremlins, The Shining, Beetlejuice, The Nun, The Exorcist, and many others. The link is in the show notes, and you really should check it out.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1A5JS6e1gA&lc=Ugx3fGI42KbKuoiidyN4AaABAg

  1. A preview for “Crawl” has just been released. What’s worse than being in a major hurricane in Florida? Being trapped in an area that’s flooding. And what’s worse than that? Monstrous alligators that take an interest in getting to you no matter what it takes. July 12th of this year, we’ll all get to join Haley in her fight to survive. Check out the trailer for yourself. It looks like it’s going to be a good one!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6MLJG0RdDE

  1. If you’re in or going to be in Los Angeles between now and June 16th, you may want to check out “I Like Horror” at the Desmond. The 25,000-square-foot interactive horror exhibit features pop-art interpretations that allow visitors to wander the hedgerows at the Overlook hotel, wallow in a giant Chinese takeout container of maggots from “The Lost Boys, creep through Freddy Krueger's boiler room, and many other scenes. "I'm a huge fan of all of these films," experiential artist Maximillian, who devised the pop-up horror house, tells Newsweek. "Some would be considered straight-up horror, some maybe not so much. But they all have scary elements. They all have an overarching dark universe. And I really wanted to touch the different horror fandoms." If you can’t make it to LA, the artist says he’d like to take it on the road, so you may get a chance in the future.

  1. If you’re a fan of horror based on real places and maybe-real events, you may want to check out "Amityville: Mt. Misery Road" Coming on DVD May 7th. Said to be the most haunted road in America, Mt. Misery Road in Long Island NY, comes alive in this thriller. Charlie and Buzi (both the main characters and the creators of the film) travel to the mysterious road, which is haunted by legendary stories of creatures such as Mothman and Hellhound and ghosts from an old, abandoned asylum. The couple fight to keep it together through one thing after another, but the forces of evil are strong. Check out the PR Newswire article for more details.

  1. Vox has quite an article titled “Inside the haunted doll markets of eBay and Etsy”. Haunted doll sellers and collectors say buyers should beware. Because possessed and haunted dolls aren’t just the realm of movies like Annabelle and Chucky. They’re real. “Etsy and eBay list thousands of dolls purportedly inhabited by everything from evil witches to judgmental spirits that might call you fat to young children and fairy spirits. Most haunted dolls sell for around $50 plus shipping, but the most highly prized ones are priced well into the four figures. There’s a formula, too, for how they’re sold: Each listing contains a detailed overview of the spirit’s life story, details of said spirit’s death, and a description of their personality. Dolls are labeled “active” or “highly active” if paranormal phenomena are said to occur frequently in their vicinity. Some are advertised as being able to move objects, make noises, or communicate via telepathy or Ouija board, while others are meant to act as creative muses, play matchmaker by revealing potential lovers in dreams, or emit positive energy.” You really should read the article to learn the stringent testing process that some dealers use to assure that the dolls are genuine. Skeptical? A believer? Well, decide for yourself.

Contemporary Classic: “The Tunnel” (2011)

Horror Short: (YouTube) “The iMom”

Ariel Martin's "The iMom" explores the future of A.I. and asks who is to blame when technology turns on us. Be careful when watching, as Katharine Trendacosta from i09 warns that “iMom will haunt your dreams.”

20 Aug 2023The Brain That Wouldn’t Die, Plan 9 From Outer Space, The Killer Shrews, and Manos: The Hand of Fate00:50:53

Episode 241

August is always the year’s slow spot with new horror, as the film companies are saving the good stuff for October. In support of that, we’ve decided to review the all-time “bottom of the barrel” horror movies. At least the ones that are still fun to watch— there are many, many far worse films than these out there, but these have acquired “legendary” status over the decades since their release.

We’ll first get a head of things with “The Brain That Wouldn’t Die” from 1962. We’ll then watch the infamous “Plan 9 from Outer Space” from 1957. We’ll then hide from 1959’s “The Killer Shrews” and clap for “Manos: The Hand of Fate” from 1966.

For our newsletter-exclusive bonus films this week, we’ll also watch:

  • “The Ape” (1940) - Boris Karloff monkeys around.

  • “Basket Case” (1982) - What’s in that basket?

30 Aug 2024Longlegs, Oddity, You’ll Never Find Me, Handling the Undead, and Tuesday00:48:17

Podcast 296

This week, we’ve got a full stack of new films. We’ll open with the much-hyped “Longlegs” and see if we agree with the buzz. We’ll stop in and check out an “Oddity,” try not to die in “Tuesday,” figure out how to get by while “Handling the Undead,” and maybe go to a place where “You’ll Never Find Me.” All of these have been released in 2024.

We’ve also got five fun shorts this week as well.

Since our little restructuring last month, we’ve decided to bump up the benefits for paying subscribers. Earlier this week, we also sent out our first subscriber-only newsletter. In this first one, we examined all the movies in “The Prophecy” series, mostly starring Christopher Walken. We’re not cutting back on the free newsletters, but we’re offering more than we did to the paid people. Subscribers also get full access to the archive of more than three years of back issues, which is easily searchable.

Then we’ll look at a couple of oldies, “The Stranglers of Bombay” from Hammer films and “Godzilla vs. Hedorah” (aka “The Smog Monster”).

And, of course, we have more excellent short films for you!

07 Dec 2024Violent Night, Slay Belles, Deathcember, It Cuts Deep, and While She Was Out00:42:02

Horror Weekly Episode #310

Back in December 2022, we thought it would be fun to watch an entire month of Christmas and Holiday themed horror movies. It was easy, and we had a lot of fun doing it. Then, this year, we wondered… could we do it again? Are there even that many Christmas-themed horror movies out there? Oh Yeah. That many and more.

So this will be the first of several weeks of nothing but holiday-themed horror for you. We’ll start off with 2022’s “Violent Night,” have some fun with “Slay Belles” from 2018, get all paranoid with “It Cuts Deep” from 2020, sleep through a 2019 anthology, “Deathcember,” and then go shopping in “While She Was Out” from 2008.

And, of course, we have five excellent short films for you. Not particularly holiday themed.

The latest issue of “Horror Monthly” is now on sale, and it’s our biggest issue yet, with 43 reviews plus a short story, this time by Brian.

OK, that’s enough sugary sweet children’s programming. My mouth is sticky from all this saccharine. As they said in Monster Squad, there must be a balance between good and evil. Let’s get back on track with 1946’s “The She-Wolf of London,” along with “Shadow of the Cat" from 1961. We’ll throw in “Grotesque” from 2009, and finish up with another “Coming Soon” film, the “Ghost in the Graveyard,” airing in November.

23 Aug 2024Maxxxine, Tarot, Insidious Chapter 2, Cursed Waters, and Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person00:45:56

Podcast 295

This week, we’ve got four new films, “Maxxxine,” “Tarot,” and “Cursed Waters: Creature of Lake Okanagan,” and the very weird “Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person,” all just recently released. We’ll go back a few years and watch “Insidious 2: Chapter 2” from 2013 as we work toward completing that series.

We’ve also got four fun shorts this week as well.

Since our little restructuring last month, we’ve decided to bump up the benefits for paying subscribers. Later this week, we will also send out our first subscriber-only newsletter. In this first one, we’ll examine all the movies in “The Prophecy” series, mostly starring Christopher Walker. We’re not cutting back on the free newsletters, but we’re offering more than we did to the paid people. Subscribers also get full access to the archive of more than three years of back issues, which is easily searchable.

Paid subscription info can be found at https://www.horrorweekly.com/

Then, instead of a single short film, we’ll watch FOUR of them!

02 May 2021Shin Godzilla, The Golem, and An American Werewolf in London00:44:25

I'm Brian. And I'm Kevin. And we're the Horror Movie Guys!

Episode 114 Summary

This week we’ll be watching some more classics and modern horror films. We'll begin with “An American Werewolf in London” from 1981, and “Shin Godzilla” from 2016. Then we’ll go WAY back and see “The Golem” from 1920 and then watch FOUR short films!

Question of the Week:

What’s the border between horror and science fiction? For example, we’ve done reviews on all the following, so obviously we consider them worthy of reviewing on our horror site and show. Would these qualify for review on, for example, a science fiction show similar to ours?

  • Frankenstein (any of them)
  • Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (any of them)
  • Invisible Man (any of them)
  • Tarantula (1955)
  • Soylent Green (1973)
  • Alien (1979)
  • The Thing (1982)
  • Event Horizon (1997)
  • Other good examples of “edge cases.” Anyone?

Intro

Welcome to Kevin and Brian’s Horror Bulletin podcast recorded live from the vampire’s crypt, where each week, we cover the latest horror news, shorts, a classic Universal horror, and two creature-feature reviews. This week, after the news, we’ll cover the Universal Studios movie “Murders In The Rue Morgue” from 1932, the classic “Cannibal Holocaust” from 1980, discussion of the short film, “Turn Around”, and the modern-horror film, “The Autopsy of Jane Doe” from 2016. Turn up the volume and lean in close. Here we go...

News Features

  1. A shout-out this week to one of our favorite horror movie clowns. Johnny Lee Johns AKA Captain Spaulding AKA Cutter turned 101 as of his fictional birthday on April 13th, being born in 1918. Time flies when you’re making mayhem. Fans have put together a great chronology of the Rob Zombie movie anti-hero, starting with his birth in El Paso, Texas up to the events leading to his appearance in “House Of 1000 Corpses” and “The Devil’s Rejects.” Check out the link in the show notes for that. The good news is that actor Sid Haig is only 80 and still working, with a third appearance of The Captain in “3 From Hell” to be released later in 2019.

  1. Black Summer has arrived a little ahead of the actual summer. The new zombie series just premiered with the whole season 1 release on April 11th. Set in the early days of a zombie apocalypse, strangers become allies to band together to survive. These aren’t the slow lurching type of zombies, but are the fast-moving type that will be on you in a flash with rage and teeth. While the premise sounds familiar, this take on the genre is getting fan and critical praise. And of course stirring debates over if it can possibly be better than The Walking Dead or any of the others we’ve seen so far. We’ve included a link to the trailer, and it looks really good.

  1. The first teaser of American Horror Story Season 9 has been released with only hints of what it might be about. The theme this time around is “1984”, and the trailer certainly gives a “Friday The 13th” vibe with a young lady being chased through the woods by a hooded and shadowy figure. She takes shelter in a wooden structure and a huge knife plunges through the door she is leaning against. Details are pretty scant at this point. Evan Peters is said to not be returning this season. Emma Roberts and Gus Kenworthy are sure things. We’ll keep an eye out for more information, and we’ll be sure to watch in this fall 2019. We’ve included a link in the show notes.

  1. You know you’ve wondered - In a battle of Jason Voorhees versus Michael Meyers, who would win? Radical Talent has brought the thought experiment to life in a new 29-minute fan film “Michael vs. Jason: Evil Emerges”. They’ve done amazing work on a low budget as the two baddies battle it out to the bloody finish. What happens when an immovable object meets an irresistible force? You’ll have to watch to find out...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?timecontinue=17&v=rXjOA6B9sYA

  1. Variety reports that Orlando Jones will be starring in an upcoming movie we’re excited about. Sort of a movie within a movie when a horror movie director becomes haunted by creatures from his own films while recovering from brain surgery. Production is expected to take place this summer, directed by Anthony O’Brien. It will also feature Steven Swadling and Prakash Amritraj. No doubt more casting, details, and a trailer will be coming soon.

Intro

Welcome to Kevin and Brian’s Horror Bulletin podcast recorded live in the catacombs beneath your feet, where each week, we cover the latest horror news, shorts, a classic Universal horror, and two creature-feature reviews. This week, after the news, we’ll cover the Universal Studios movie “Frankenstein” from 1931, the contemporary “Here Comes the Devil” from 2012, discussion of the short film, “Leaf Blower Massacre 1 and 2”, and the modern-horror film, “Ghost Stories” from 2017. This week, we’ll also have a bonus discussion of the independent film “Leaf Blower Massacre 2” from 2016. Turn up the volume and lean in close. Here we go...

News Features

  1. Proving that the Xenomorph Queen is their favorite Disney Princess, the entertainment empire has officially confirmed that they will be making more Alien movies after their acquisition of 20th Century Fox and the royalties to the franchise that they now own. It’s only a tease for now, but after an uncertain future when the transfer was taking place, we can be sure to see more acid blood splattering someday soon.

  1. Netflix has a very cool-looking movie showing beginning on April 10th call The Silence. “With the world under attack by deadly creatures who hunt by sound, a teen and her family seek refuge outside the city and encounter a mysterious cult.” Think Birdbox meets The Quiet Place with what looks like some of the best elements from both, gory, scary, and we get to see the creatures in the preview. Check out the link in the show notes for more information and a trailer.

  1. EW reports that a steelbox edition of Ghostbusters 1 & 2 is coming the summer of 2020 with an incredible amount of extra features, behind-the-scenes footage, clips, outtakes, and things never seen before. It looks to be a lot of fun, and a very thorough way to revisit the classic comedy horror movies.

  1. Hellboy will be blasting into US theaters on April 12th with a fresh installment of the demonic hero. It’s said this film will be relying heavily on practical special effects, and a little behind-the-scenes teaser has been released as well as an updated trailer. Check them both out for a little taste of the searing hellfire to come.

  1. If you want to get some thrills and chills while helping out a great cause, you can purchase a copy of the upcoming horror short-story collection “The Campfire Tales”. A group of writers in Northern California have banded together to put out the collection, with all proceeds going toward wildfire relief in the western communities hit at the end of 2018. The fires are out, but there’s still work to do. Advance praise from Jonathan Maberry, New York Times bestselling author of V-Wars and Glimpse says “Tales for the Camp Fire is a brilliant collection of truly creepy tales by horror’s hottest voices! Dark, funny, heartbreaking, and bizarre. Highly recommended!” It’s available May 2nd of this year, and can be pre-ordered right now.

13 Apr 2024Saw 3D, Dark Shadows, Dead Sea, and Cold Creek Manor01:02:26

Episode 276

It must be Spring– there’s no new horror this week. Instead, we’ll take a look at some more oldies. We’ll start with the seventh Saw movie, “Saw 3D: The Final Chapter.” It wasn’t in 3D for us, and it wasn’t the final chapter, but that’s the way things go sometimes. We’ll stop in on Johnny Depp and Tim Burton with 2012’s “Dark Shadows” spoof. Then we’ll watch a contender for Worst Movie of All Time with “Dead Sea.” As a palette cleanser, we’ll watch the stalker movie “Cold Creek Manor.”

The weekly newsletter this time around has two more oldies. Neither of these films are horror, but both star Peter Lorre, the subject of this week’s free biography:

  • “The Man Who Knew Too Much” (1932 ) Hitchcock!
  • “The Maltese Falcon” (1941) Bogart!

Those two can be found at http://horrorbulletin.com

Announcement!

We’ve launched a new series of books under a new imprint: Hourlong Press now offers a new, free, nonfiction book every week.

Check out https://hourlongpress.com/ and sign up for the weekly free book newsletter. The first half-dozen or so books will be about legendary horror icons: Vincent Price, Lon Chaney Jr., Bela Lugosi, Christopher Lee, etc., so I’ll be pointing those out in this newsletter, but to get future, non-horror–related books, you’ll need to be on that email list.

For the next five days, you can get “Peter Lorre: The Biography” absolutely for free from Amazon.

Next week, there’ll be another!

Here. We. Go!

Stay tuned for more regular and bonus reviews next week!
