23 Jun 2022The Can Lady & This is a Man's World00:30:35

Welcome to our first episode of the Hollywood Confessional!

In this week's episode, we hear confessions from two up-and-comers as they battle condescension, abuse, toxic work environments, and even a car crash on their journeys to gain respect and a foothold in the entertainment industry.

Can Lady

"I wanted to quit that job every single day. But I kept going, and that ended up bringing me on the career path that I'm on now. When you have a positive attitude and you're resourceful, you can really do anything."

Our first confession, "Can Lady," tells the story of an office production assistant who, after being hired to pick up an actor for costume fitting, gets into a car accident in the parking lot! Later, their domineering boss, the "Can Lady," unceremoniously fires them in the midst of a national emergency. But amazingly, despite these insane setbacks, the Confessor finds a way to spin all this to their advantage.

It's a Man's World

"I always thought I was guilty until proven innocent. And even if I was innocent, it didn’t matter. I would always say to myself, 'Are your shorts too short? Are you resting in a sexy way?' I didn’t even realize that this was complete sexual harassment."

Confessor 2 is the only female on an all-male art department crew in "It's a Man's World," and they make her feel it. Despite working insane hours, taking on far more work than she's getting paid for, and putting up with aggressive sexual harassment, she doesn't get the credit she deserves. Instead, she gets falsely accused of stealing from the company... which leads her to a life-changing revelation.

These two amazing confessions get into the following:

  • How to survive in Hollywood -- literally!
  • How to tell the difference between legitimate job stress and abusive behavior
  • How to turn a difficult job experience into a positive career move

Finally, we round out the episode with a shoutout to some people who are taking action to make Hollywood a happier place -- writer-producers Sam Ernst and Jim Dunn.

07 Jul 2022Find Me B***h & The Bleep Bleep Story00:28:39

Sometimes when you're in a toxic situation, you don't realize it until it's too late. Other times, you take that situation and work the shit out of it.

On this week's episode of the Hollywood Confessional, we have two confessions from entertainment industry newcomers who found themselves in abusive situations. And they have some serious words for their former bosses.

Find Me, Bitch!

"When you're in a vulnerable spot, you have to take a job and keep it by any means necessary."

Confessor 1 is a 22-year-old who rushed out of college and was struggling to find a job when their mom passed away. They  eventually found a production assistant job for a commercial production company. When it turned degrading, they found innovative ways to stay employed and get their revenge.

The Bleep Bleep Story

"
When they announced the master class, it was like, Oh, this is the thing. [BLEEP BLEEP] is teaching it himself. This is going to be amazing. And I sort of naively expected that we were going to really workshop the scripts. I thought he was there to sort of, like, teach us his process. But I should have known better because the theme of the class… was sex scenes."

Confessor 2 is a 20-year-old aspiring screenwriter fresh out of suburbia. They were invited to take a free writing class at the studio of a famous multi-hyphenate. Despite  red flags, they went along with it and soon realized they'd been sucked into a wild and toxic scam.

In this episode, we get into the following:

  • What is the reality of the entertainment industry like for those starting out?
  • How do you identify red flags when you're pursuing a Hollywood opportunity?
  • Why are people trying to break into the entertainment industry sometimes willing to overlook toxic behavior by people in charge?

We top it off with a shoutout to someone who is putting his career on the line to make Hollywood a happier place... the founder of Video Mantis, Thomas Popp.

04 Aug 2022The Oligarch's Apprentice & Horse Stand-In00:23:53

In a world where Hollywood isn't just a neighborhood, but a universal concept, our Confessors confront the irony of their journey, as Confessor 1 is forced to assist an abusive and manipulative Eastern European oligarch's right-hand man, and Confessor 2 gets a job as a stand-in for a salad-throwing wannabe Hollywood big shot in Vancouver.

The Oligarch's Apprentice

"The #MeToo movement changed my life because it made me see that even if at some point [sexual harassment] was part of the job, it doesn't have to be that way in the future. And if we stand together and support each other, it won't be. There's strength in numbers. The power is on our side now."

Our first Confessor this week was hired as a producer's assistant at a large studio in Eastern Europe, but quickly realized that the VP was taking advantage of young women in the office. When she stood up to him, he reacted in a way she never expected... by throwing a full-on temper tantrum.

Confessor #2 also started off as an assistant to an abusive producer -- but her experience took place in Canada. What seemed like an incredible opportunity to break into TV writing turned into a nightmare when she got fired... only to be re-hired as a stand-in on the same producer's movies.

Horse Stand-In

"There is no better revenge than doing the thing you initially set out to do."

In this episode, we get into:

  • How bad leadership creates a toxic environment
  • Loyalty tests in Hollywood
  • What to do when you have to stand in for a horse (WTF?!)

We then leave these tales of toxicity behind for a shoutout from one of our amazing voice actors to someone she thinks is making Hollywood a happier place... acting coach Lauren Patrice Nadler, who goes above and beyond to create a positive environment for training actors.

24 Nov 2022Clipboard Girl00:22:17

You know who they are. Young. Smart. Hungry. Always running around trying to get people to fill out paperwork. Some of these folks find their way from entry-level positions into satisfying careers in the entertainment industry. Others – like this week’s confessor – run like hell.

“At first, I was fine with being in a coordinating role. I thought that was going to be my life. But now I wanted to be creative. And I realized if I kept going like I was, that was never going to happen.”

In this week’s confession, we hear from a former production office assistant whose job behind a desk inspired her to get on set and become a filmmaker herself. But the road from – in her words – “clipboard girl” to director was a long one, with more than a few twists and turns along the way.

“The second day, we were shooting in this saloon. I’m running around, doing whatever I can for people and loving every minute of it. And about halfway through the day, I step off a curb, and I hear a SNAP. And I go down.”

A debilitating injury might have stopped most people… but not our confessor. She stuck it out through her first on-set experience, working almost a month on crutches for deferred pay. And believe it or not… it turned out to be worth it.

In this episode, you’ll hear:

1.    What it’s like starting out in the industry as a production office assistant

2.    How knowing what you want and having faith in yourself can help keep you going in the toughest situations

3.    An absolutely incredible story of a woman who overcame adversity in Hollywood and truly achieved her dream

If that’s not enough inspiration for you, we finish off our Season 1 Finale with a shoutout to some of the most important people in Hollywood, who are out there making it a happier place every single day… support staffers! We see you, we love you – hell, we ARE you. Thanks so much for everything you do – and to our audience for making this a great first season!

23 Feb 2023The Comeback00:23:03

What if you got your first big break in Hollywood at age 24… and then didn’t get another for 25 years?

In this incredible first confession of our second season, we hear from a fearless aspiring filmmaker who scored a job directing a studio feature film when they were barely out of college. But as thrilling as it sounds, the experience wasn’t what they expected…

"One day about halfway through, I woke up in my hotel room after 12 hours of sleep, and I couldn’t move. I laid in the bed. Looked at the ceiling, and I was like, it’s only week three. I have four more weeks. I’m not going to make it.”

After enduring the intense highs and lows of being a first-time director on a multi-million-dollar film, our confessor gets a major win… but somehow it still feels like a loss. The decades-long struggle that follows highlights how hard it can be to maintain a career, even after your first big break, but it also leads the confessor to some powerful revelations.

“It dawned on me that if one mode is no longer yielding the results you want, you have two choices. You can blame everybody else. Or you can change your approach.”

In this episode, we get into the following:

1. The difficulties of maintaining a career in the entertainment industry – even after you break in

2. The truth behind the saying, “It’s a marathon, not a sprint”

3. What it takes to keep pursuing your goals in your darkest moments

10 Mar 2023Audition Crasher00:23:56

Hustlers will stop at nothing to make it in Hollywood. So what happens when something stops them?

In this week’s confession, a determined up-and-coming actor decides to break into the business by any means necessary. Stealing passwords, going through garbage – they’ll do anything to achieve their goal. And at first, the hustle pays off!

“I would go from casting office to casting office with a bag of different clothes – like I had a ‘bad girl’ outfit and a ‘nerdy secretary’ – and see who was in the waiting room and if I could see the sides on the walls. And that is how I booked a national commercial.”

But when you’re pursuing a career in the entertainment industry, one break rarely gets you all the way in. For this confessor, that first national commercial was just one step down a seemingly endless road. And as their career progressed, crashing auditions got more complicated, forcing them to question their choices.

“Around age 30, I started to get fed up. With acting, and with the grind. All of it… and then one day, my apartment got burglarized.”

In this episode, we get into the following:

1.    How to break in as an actor by any means necessary (don’t try this at home!)

2.    How to create opportunities for yourself, even without support

3.    How to find your true passion

Finally, we top off the episode with a shoutout to a Hollywood pioneer in the animation industry who’s helping up-and-coming animators achieve their dreams – Rose Duignon. Huge thanks to Rose for making Hollywood a happier place!

23 Mar 2023The Sellout00:25:37

Money. Fame. That nagging feeling that you might have given up everything you believed in to get the one thing you wanted.

In this week’s confession, we hear from a feature film writer who experienced all this and more. Well, maybe not the fame part. And… not a ton of money, now that we think about it. But they definitely sold out for a glimpse of Hollywood glory.

“The whole ‘artist’ thing – whatever I once felt like I needed to say – that was completely gone. I was ready to make a deal. A thousand bucks for the option, and I was in.”

The deal seemed like a great idea at first. They survived development hell, got to call themself a professional screenwriter. But once the film finally got the green light, they learned selling out has its own price.

“So many things were happening. They were picking locations, hiring a DP, holding auditions – and they cast [BLEEP BLEEP] as the lead! But I barely got to see any of this. I just heard it was happening through the grapevine. In essence, it was like my part was finished.”

In this episode, we discuss:

1.    How to manage FOMO when the movie you spent years working on is being made without you

2.    Why screenplay options should really be more than a thousand bucks

3.    How to make the most of your three days on set when the director is crying and the star has locked himself in his trailer

We wrap up this episode with a shoutout to some industry professionals who saved our butts more than once while we were working on location in Toronto – the transportation crew! These folks don’t often get a lot of shine, but they should! They start work before anyone else, and their days don’t end until everyone gets home safely. Thanks to all the transpo pros out there for making Hollywood a happier place!

06 Apr 2023The Dangers of Do It Yourselfing00:26:49

Ever thought about making your own movie? Maybe considered the advice “If you want to be a filmmaker, just shoot a film!” It sounds simple. But take it from our confessor: Do-it-yourselfing can be a dangerous (and expensive) business!

In this week’s confession, we hear from a gung-ho aspiring director who gets tired of
waiting for something to happen in their career and decides to take action to achieve theirdream. Unlike some Hollywood hucksters, however, our confessor isn’t comfortable claiming to be something they’re not. So they do it the hard way…

“My level of work ethic, first, and dignity, second, tells me I cannot wear a title if I
have not earned it. But I started to realize the things I wanted to do cost money.
Like, a LOT of money.”

After years of frustration, they join a collective of artists who claim they’re all going to
volunteer time to work on each other’s short films… only to discover that no one in the group wants to produce. So our confessor realizes that if they want to direct, they’re going to have to do the whole thing on their own.

“If I don’t move the needle, nothing will move. Because who’s going to do it? Who’s
going to do anything for me if I don’t do it for myself?”

Determination and self-reliance lead our confessor down a path riddled with crazy
setbacks and miraculous breakthroughs. Ultimately the film gets made… but will it make their career?

In this episode, we get into the following:
1. How to make your own short film
2. How to work with actors (when they don’t want to work with you)
3. How to deal with setbacks in your creative career

As content creators ourselves, this story really resonates with us. We’d love to hear what you think! Shoot us a note about when you tried to make your own film @fessuphollywood, or leave us a review here.

TRIGGER WARNING: This week's story involves drug use. If this could be distressing to you, please skip this episode and join us next week.

“I’m at a party. Somebody goes into their pocket and pulls out five or six pills. And I take all of them, and I eat them. About 15 minutes later, I’m not feeling good. I think I’m about to throw up. I’m by the sink. I look in the cupboard, and there’s a filter. So I grab a coffee filter. I lean over the sink, and I throw up into the coffee filter. And then I squeeze it, open the filter. And there are the pills. And I take the pills and take a beer, and I swallow them again. That’s the kind of addict I was.”

In today’s episode, we hear from an actor whose brilliant career fell apart due to their addictions to drugs and alcohol. From booking several roles a month at 19 to becoming a final contender for a series lead, our confessor’s meteoric rise coincided with an increasingly habit of using… which ultimately brought it all crashing down.

“I thought talent was everything. I thought, I’m not the first guy to have issues with drugs or alcohol. Let’s figure it out. I’m worth it. But within a few years, I had nothing. I blew all the money. I didn’t have anything left.”

Redemption didn’t come easily for our confessor. They continued to book roles because of their talent, but marijuana and cocaine eventually led to more ravaging addictions… and trouble with the law. They only survived, as our confessor puts it, because angels were looking out for them… just long enough to bring our confessor to the point where they were ready to get the help they needed.

In this episode, we hear how addiction can completely take over the life of an artist, and at least one of the reasons why. We also hear a profoundly moving tale of redemption, as our confessor finally figures out what it takes to come clean.

"Coming Clean" is very important to us, and we hope this story will inspire our fellow entertainment industry professionals who are also struggling with addiction. Let us know what you think on Twitter or Instagram @fessuphollywood. And please leave us a review and rating here! We’ll be back in two weeks with another episode of Hollywood Confessional.

Who knows what really goes on behind the scenes in Hollywood? Crew members, that's who. This week, we're sharing a confession from a lighting technician who has worked on dozens of films and TV series, witnessing some intense safety issues and some jaw-dropping work environments. We hear stories of rigging across mountaintops and frozen waterfalls, almost killing someone with a tree, and finally how a bad boss led our confessor to refuse to work on one famous show ever again. Find out how safety on set depends on who's running the show, how those on non-union sets are often more exposed to danger, and what makes working tough jobs in the entertainment industry rewarding. 13 Jul 2023The Gun Story, Part 100:34:09

A producer walks onto a movie set and takes out a gun. Why?

Our confessor has a lot to say about that. In this week's episode of the Hollywood Confessional, we hear the first part of an intense behind-the-scenes tale from a Second AD on an independent film where a run-and-gun approach led to a dangerous situation. We discuss safety on set, the importance of engaged leadership, and how group dynamics can shape events in ways perhaps no individual expects.

This confession was recorded prior to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. However, our intro was recorded Wednesday, July 12, hours prior to the expiration of the SAG-AFTRA contract. It features a special conversation with our friends at Blue Monday Productions Shira Gorelick and Julie Snyder, as we discuss the rumor mill surrounding negotiations and what we're all fighting for. Check it out, share this episode, and let us know your thoughts @fessuphollywood! And if you have a moment, please leave us a review on your podcast app. It really helps get the word out to those who are working to make Hollywood a happier place!

27 Jul 2023The Gun Story, Part 200:31:35

We pick up right where we left off last episode: the first AD just pulled a real gun. This raises a storm of questions about safety measures, responsibility, and ethics. We unpack this incident, empathizing with the line producer's reaction, and explore the gray areas of accountability when guns make their way onto a film set. In this whirlwind of conflict, controversy, and collective action, we witness the ripple effects shaking Hollywood's foundation.

We also discuss the significance of the recent development of this summer's labor movement and how the industry's landscape is being reshaped. Join us as we examine these complexities, highlight the power of labor solidarity, and ponder the lasting legacy of these incidents on Hollywood's work culture.

10 Aug 2023The Man Who Peed on Me00:42:07

Motorcycle chases. Labor abuses. Unsolicited bodily fluids. Just another day Hollywood?

In this week's episode, a small arms and demolitions expert enters a different kind of battlefield when he takes a job as a production assistant on a film run by a notorious low-budget producer. But neither earthquakes nor legal problems nor a $50-a-day flat rate can deter this intrepid confessor. Join us as we hear how, despite crazy obstacles, he hustled his way to the top of the industry... only to discover he wasn't where he wanted to be.

We also have a very special guest this week! Hollywood historian Andrea Van Landingham, author of Hollywood Horrors: Murders, Scandals and Cover-Ups from Tinseltown, joins us to talk about the history of Hollywood and whether it's doomed (destined?) to be a crazy town. Don't miss it!

28 Aug 2023Behind Closed Doors: A Studio Executive Confession00:13:40

Power talks behind closed doors. In this special confession, we hear from an executive at a streaming arm of a studio about what's actually being said and done inside the studios during the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

How corporate chaos fostered by the streaming boom and the pandemic led to a desire among many to double down on control. How that desire manifests differently for the leadership than it does for the rank-and-file. How the disconnect is fostering an atmosphere of dissent within the studios, countered only by fear and the rise of an "us-versus-them" mentality.

Our confessor shares these truths along with some thoughts on how striking workers can most effectively counter the toxicity in this Hollywood Confessional "extra". Please help spread the word by sharing with others who want to make Hollywood a happier place.

11 Apr 2024Mind the Gap00:27:34

Imagine you're working your ass off for a thankless 60+ hours a week job on a TV show, and you discover everyone else in your position is making more than you.

PS, they're all men. And you're the only woman.

In this week's episode of the Hollywood Confessional, we hear a confession from an office production assistant who found herself in this very dilemma.

"When I was handed all of the pay cards with everybody's rates on them for
that week, it happened that the card on top was another production assistant.
And when I looked at his card –- not trying to look, but in receiving something, one
must look at it -- I realized he was getting paid $50 more a week than me."

Awareness leads to action in this inspiring story from a PA who found the courage to confront her boss and demand fair pay... despite the very real fear that doing so could end her career.

"I was really scared. I feel scared even just describing this story to you.  Because think about what this guy could do to me, you know? He could make it so I could never work in this town again."

We get into the dangers of taking a stand when you feel like you have no power, and the calculated risks that come with following your beliefs. Finally, we discuss what entertainment industry workers can do to protect themselves in similar pay gap situations.

Spoiler... sometimes these stories have a happy ending.

25 Apr 2024#PayUpHollywood Fesses Up: An Interview with Liz Hsiao Lan Alper and Alex Rubin00:50:37

Hello Hollywood Faithful! Today we've got an on the record interview with Liz Hsiao Lan Alper and Alex Rubin of Pay Up Hollywood.

Pay Up Hollywood began as grassroots movement in 2019, in an attempt to bring attention to the pay inequities, abuses and struggles of many Hollywood assistants. In subsequent years, PayUpHollywood has campaigned for Hollywood studios and companies to pay support staffers a living wage, in an effort to both tear down the paywall that keeps historically underprivileged voices out of the industry and to ensure current support staff can afford to work in their current position. PayUpHollywood aims to provide resources and aid to current entertainment support staffers as well as ongoing data and information about entertainment support staffers to other groups and companies who want to be part of the solution.

23 May 2024Class Con00:27:36

Scam artists steal dreams. We're finding ways to get payback.

In this incendiary episode of the Hollywood Confessional, we hear from an aspiring writer who pursued a seemingly great opportunity: taking a class from a mentorship program, the stated goal of which was to help underrepresented voices get into the industry. The first thing they learned? Some so-called "mentors" can't be trusted.

Red flags abound in this story of a dream gone wrong... but so do glimmers of hope. Ultimately our confessor realizes they've been conned out of their intellectual property, but is it too late to do anything about it?

Join us for a discussion on industry scams, how to avoid them, and what you can do if you find yourself caught in one. Spoiler: The answer is definitely NOT slashing tires.

06 Jun 2024It's Me, Fake Carol00:29:49

"I love writers. But if there's one thing my mom taught me, it's if you love something make it suffer."

With that tweet, the parody account that slayed with truth and laughs during the 2023 Hollywood labor strikes was born. And so was the question, "Who is Fake Carol?"

This week, the writer behind @itsmecarolamptp joins us in the booth to give us an answer. From their initial inspiration to the account going "Hollywood viral," they share how their satirical portrayal of the studios' lead negotiator caught fire, and even managed to fool a few journalists during the strike.

Our guest also opens up about the emotional rollercoaster of being "Fake Carol" while struggling in their real life. Through their personal journey, they highlight the profound importance of community and hope in sustaining a creative career.  Join us in the booth for laughs and inspiration as we relive this cultural moment through the words of the real-life person who made it happen.

20 Jun 2024Burn It Down: Investigating Hollywood's Power Dynamics with Maureen Ryan00:58:26

“The only thing that works to take down abusers is Mo Ryan writes something about them."

If we weren’t already on fire to talk with the author of Burn It Down: Power, Complicity, and a Call for Change in Hollywood, this quote from a confessor would have set us aflame. This week we get our chance, as entertainment journalist Maureen “Mo” Ryan steps into the confessional booth.

Mo is a Contributing Editor at Vanity Fair, and has written for Entertainment Weekly, the New York Times, EW, Salon, GQ, and Vulture.  She has spent much of the last decade writing in-depth pieces on matters of inclusion, misconduct and abuse in Hollywood -- and on efforts to make the industry better.

Join us for an eye-opening conversation as Mo unpacks the complex web of power dynamics in Hollywood, the need for a safe and empowering space for marginalized voices to be heard, and what makes her hopeful for the future of the entertainment industry.

01 Aug 2024The Things We Do For Love00:26:23

How far would you go to make a movie? This week's confessor had to face that question within minutes of taking a gig co-producing an indie film... and personally, we're still recovering 😩😩😩

Sweet-talking property managers, hustling for food donations, and petting cockroaches (😱) is just the beginning. When our confessor learns they need an extra $10K for post-production, they set out on a high-stakes mission to find investors in, shall we say, unexpected places.

"I started thinking. Who do I know who has cash on hand and might be willing to take on this kind of risk? I thought of these two guys I know. Two brothers. They were business owners, gamblers. Maybe they were the type of guys I was looking for."

An "only-in-Hollywood" moment ensues as our confessor tries to get that bag and realizes they've gone a little farther than they intended to. But will it all be worth it in the end? Check out the episode to find out and let us know @fessuphollywood how far you've gone to make your filmmaking dreams come true!

12 Sep 2024Untouchable: When a Toxic Person Can't Be Fired00:24:51

Trigger Warning: Self-harm and drug use.

We all know how hard it is to land a job in this industry, but what about how hard it is to fire someone... even when they deserve it?

In this week's episode, we hear from a confessor who was an executive producer on a 20-episode order of a first-season show. The challenges they faced just to run the room and keep good scripts coming on time were compounded exponentially by a writer who disrupted the room at every turn.

September 29th, appeared visibly intoxicated while working in the room.

October 5th, he was rolling a Swiss Army knife around on his knuckles with the blade out while appearing to be under the influence.

October 25th, he left over an hour early without telling anyone.

11/11, an unidentified pill was found outside his office.

Incredibly, these and many more infractions weren't enough to convince HR to take action. It was up to our confessor to find a way to manage the problem, all while running a TV show, dealing with the writer's mental health issues, and taking care of their own.

Join us for a discussion on firing and being fired, how to cope with toxic behavior in the workplace, and why we absolutely must destigmatize mental health care to make Hollywood a happier place.

26 Sep 2024Confessions of a Hollywood Gatekeeper00:22:17

Why do some screenplays get green lit, while others never see the light of day?

Join us this week for some behind-the-scenes intel from a studio script reader, a self-described "first gatekeeper" who's been part of the process of getting stories from page to screen for over two decades.

"One of the first things you learn as a reader is, even on the worst script, you have to say something nice. And that is partly so the execs can get on the phone and have your coverage in their hands and be like, 'We really like the character of, uh... "Joe," but unfortunately we already have something similar in development.'"

We discuss the method behind the apparent Hollywood madness of what gets made, including how some scripts improve through the development process, while others end up getting... ugh... "noted to death."

"I've seen stuff in development where it was like, there was something special about this script, and you killed it."

Listen in to hear stories of how films you've definitely heard of made it from the reader's desk to the screen... including one that almost didn't. And hear how our confessor stumbled onto this hard-to-find career path... and discovered, against all odds, that it was actually their dream job.

24 Oct 2024Don't Want My MTV: Tales from a Music Video PA00:20:23

Hippie chicks. Jam sessions. A bomb on wheels. In this quintessential "Hollywood coming of age" story, our confessor finds themselves in one wild situation after the next, starting with their cross-country road trip to LA.

"It was the middle of the desert. And it was the middle of the day. And we saw like a big, old pickup truck coming up behind us really fast. I can still picture it getting larger and larger in the rearview mirror. We barely had time to react before it rammed us from behind."

After miraculously surviving one near-death experience moving to town, our confessor soon found themselves in another while hustling as a production assistant on music videos.

Join us for a #TBT discussion of life in the early days of MTV, when rock bands would sometimes serenade crews and Kool-Aid was the most delicious drink ever. It's a story of resiliency and finding your way in this crazy industry... and it's also a damn good time!

Also be sure to check out the quick teaser of our upcoming oral history: Portrait of a Survivor at the end of the episode!

07 Nov 2024Portrait of a Survivor Part 100:26:57

"These people are never going to have sharp claws and pointed teeth. They're going to look like your good friend. And they're mostly going to act like your good friend. And then every once in a while..."

In this episode of the Hollywood Confessional, two confessors from opposite ends of the Hollywood hierarchy share their stories of working with the same toxic man. Over the course of several years and multiple TV shows, they recall how the man they once admired as a leader revealed the monster within.

"You could see the rage radiating off him. He was a completely different person in that moment."

Our mission on this podcast has always been to make Hollywood a happier place by giving industry professionals a place to share their deepest, darkest secrets. And all too often, those secrets exist because abusers are in positions of power.

In this two-part oral history, we explore how one particular abuser got into that position through lies, manipulation, and superficial charm. And through the voice of one of his victims, we hear how his abuse was reinforced by the system.

"He called the exec. And then he told me that what he said was, 'You're a nobody. He's not going to ask the showrunner to leave.'"

In part two, we'll see how even exposing an abuser in the media doesn't always fix the problem, and what one victim did after quitting the job to rebuild her life. We also pay homage to her and all the others who have gone through similar situations in the struggle to achieve their dreams.

21 Nov 2024Portrait of a Survivor Part 200:25:36

"When I first met him, I was like, this guy is going to be a fucking problem."

In Part 2 of our oral history "Portrait of a Survivor," we hear from a new perspective on an abusive Hollywood showrunner... that of his assistant's close friend.

"He has that cult leader personality, that sort of psychopath thing where he's very superficially charming. I know a lot of people with those personalities."

We hear how our confessor escaped the toxic situation with her friend's clear-eyed perspective and support. And we see how it all came roaring back to her years later, when she saw a warning on an assistant board against working with someone... and the subject line was her abuser's name.

"I think the initial email came out at like eight in the morning. By 10:30, there were like 15 more emails from different people, like, 'He's a terrorist.' 'He's the worst person I ever met.' All these people sharing their experiences. Then a reporter reached out to me asking for a comment."

As the confessor and her friend navigate the process of trying to go public about a powerful abuser in Hollywood, we're also joined by TV/film critic and journalist Maureen "Mo" Ryan. Mo has worked with countless survivors, especially for her book Burn It Down. In the process, she has found perspective... and even hope.

"Anyone, in any job, is often confused about what to do about a problematic situation. But in this industry, the disincentives are huge. And those have not really gone away... But many, many people have found a positive way forward from having come forward."

Join us for this powerful conclusion of "Portrait of a Survivor" to see how our confessor dealt with the fallout of abuse in her own life, and how she found the strength and support she needed to move on.

12 Dec 2024You Never Know Who's Watching00:16:32

***SERIES FINALE!***

Welcome back Hollywood Faithful, one last time! This week, we hear the magical, heartwarming tale of an actor who gets invited to a holiday party at a stunning A-lister's mansion... and then learns they have to perform!

"There was a pool and music, and there was a dance floor and a deejay. There were pathways lit, and a tarot reader... a psychic medium... white-jacketed waiters, staff walking around with drinks and hors d’oeuvres... And about two hours into it, [BLEEP] gets up on stage and she says, 'All right, we're going to do a little contest.'"

Luckily our confessor knows how to improv! Through a night of twists, turns, and unexpected laughs, our confessor discovers that taking a risk and letting yourself have fun in Hollywood can lead to a magical happy ending.

"At that point, these two people came out in dinner jackets. And they
have these metal cases like Deal or No Deal – that show was hot back then. You would pick a case, and you’d open it, and it would tell you what the amount was. And you never knew. It could be $5. It could be $5,000. So these two people come up on stage and, you know, they're in front of the stage and they have the cases. And my buddy goes first and opens it up. And he goes, Oh my God..."

"You Never Know Who's Watching" is our final episode of the Hollywood Confessional. And with it, we want to say thank you to all of our listeners -- those who have been with us since the beginning, and all of you that we've met along the way. This has been an incredible journey. We love this show and the community we've built, and we are honored to have served as your podcast priests.
