In the third episode of our Sacred Spaces Series with Jessica & Taylor of Madouk Collection, we’re getting into a juicy topic: the energy of our spaces and the things we have in them. 25 Sep 2022 | 057: San Diego Design Week: Exploring Inspiration & Touch with Anke of Twelve Senses Retreat | 00:46:56
In the final episode of our San Diego Design Week series exploring inspiration and the senses, we explore the sense of touch with Anke of Twelve Senses Retreat in Encinitas. Anke’s design journey began with car design and eventually led to creating this beautiful retreat, which has four rooms inspired by the four elements and the senses. She shares how she thoughtfully designed each room, and explains why she chose certain features, materials, and textures for each of the elements. Hearing Anke’s passion for working with her hands and building spaces may also inspire you to create and take a break from working on digital screens. Guest Bio Developing the Twelve Senses Retreat has been a dream of Anke’s for over a decade. The first seed was planted when she traveled to the Valle De Guadalupe with some dear friends. They visited La Villa De La Valle, and Anke was deeply touched by how co-owners Phil and Eileen had left their careers in Los Angeles, moved across the border, and built a new life. Their incredible passion for high quality artisanship and sustainability left a long-lasting impression. Ten years later, she is immensely thankful to have completed Twelve Senses Retreat with incredible support from friends, family, and her architects and building team. She is a proud new member of the Design Hotels group, which has long been her go-to inspiration for travel and hosting. Linda Pastor Hodnett, the owner of Stitch Studio and Le Domicile Design, joins me on this episode to talk about her experience in the design industry and how she came to work with soft goods. Stitch Studio (formerly Janie’s Draperies) is a resource I’ve been using since my early days in the industry, and in our conversation, we cover why it is so important to have someone like Linda who will be honest with you about what will and won’t work. She also explains more in depth what soft goods are, what they do for a space, and how she collaborates with designers to create truly beautiful pieces that clients will love. Guest Bio Stitch Studio originates from the 25 year legacy that was Janie’s Draperies. Purchasing the drapery workroom in the summer of 2018, Linda Pastor Hodnett, an A.S.I.D interior designer with over 30 years in the design industry, wanted to create the soft goods workroom she's always dreamed of. 16 Aug 2022 | 044: Building a Life as an Artist with Fay Ray | 00:53:49
In this episode, artist Fay Ray and I have a beautiful and honest conversation about the art world, what it means to be both an artist and a parent, and how designers can better understand and incorporate art into spaces. Fay Ray also reminds us of the challenges of building a life as an artist, and she shares how she has remained devoted to her work over the years. There’s so much here to talk about that we could do a part two to this episode, so stay tuned! In the meantime, enjoy this wonderful conversation. Guest Bio Los Angeles-based artist Fay Ray explores the fetishization of objects and the construction of female identity through high-contrast, monochrome photomontages and metallic sculpture. For her three-dimensional works, Fay Ray compiles cast aluminum objects, bored volcanic rocks, wire, chain, and natural materials into suspended sculptural masses. Conflating worlds of worship and desire, the works across mediums borrow from the symbolism and composition of traditional religious relics and the visual language of the occult. Ray’s sculptures and collages hint at the presence of a rematerialized body through a mysterious yet systematic organization of abstract form. Fay Ray (b. 1978, Riverside, CA) received her BFA from Otis College of Art and Design in 2002, and her MFA from Columbia University in 2005. She has exhibited at galleries within the US and internationally, including Shulamit Nazarian, Los Angeles (2016 & 2018); Thaddaeus Ropac, Paris (2016); Louis B James Gallery, New York (2016); JOAN, Los Angeles (2015); Honor Fraser Gallery, Los Angeles (2012); and Gagosian Gallery, Beverly Hills (2011) and New York (2007), among others. Guest Bio Rachel White is The Skeptical Shaman. Here for the spiritually homeless, Rachel blends real-world pragmatism, her sense of humor, and ancient tools and techniques into her practice as a trained shaman, medium, energy practitioner, self-published author, and flower essence maker. Khalid shares how meditation has had a major impact on his work, helping him get into the flow and stay there. Khalid’s story and his passion for his work are inspiring for all creatives. Design Coven Pro members will have a chance to experience Khalid’s work in person at the Junior League of San Diego on Saturday, June 3. Learn more and join us at designcoven.com/join. About Khalid Alkaaby Alkaaby’s creative journey started early in his childhood. His natural talents for drawing and painting inspired him to begin his education in Fine Art. While attending University his work was shaped by the local Masters of his hometown. They saw his potential as a young artist and shared their wealth of knowledge and expertise with him. Alkaaby’s beautiful life was uprooted in 2005 with a change in the political climate. Alkaaby chose to embark on the journey of a lifetime and to immigrate to the US. It is here in the US that Alkaaby experienced a sense of creative freedom that allowed his works to soar to higher levels. Alkaaby’s figurative work celebrates the energy and beauty of the sitter, translated to the viewer by his expert eye. His abstract work takes a moment in time, his personal energy and fuses it to the canvas. Each piece of Alkaaby’s work is a meditation, a vision prior to his brush touching the canvas. Alkaaby’s work is inspired by love, grace and beauty that surrounds him. He currently resides in San Diego. A Rebirth in Business: Realignment, Retrogrades & Raw Intention In this short and sweet solo episode, I’m reconnecting with you after a much-needed pause. I light a candle, pull a card from my Rider-Waite deck—the Nine of Wands—and reflect on its powerful message about burnout, boundaries, and being close to completion. With the Aries New Moon, a solar eclipse, and both Mercury and Venus in retrograde, it feels like the perfect time to slow down and realign. I share what’s been unfolding behind the scenes—from stepping away from projects that no longer felt aligned, to returning to my roots in holistic interior design. This episode is completely unedited and from the heart. I’m embracing simplicity and authenticity, and I want to encourage you to do the same in your business. I also share a little about my new 90-day one-on-one coaching offer, updates with Design Coven, and exciting ASID events coming up here in San Diego—especially the IP Expo happening on Earth Day (April 22nd), which I’ll be moderating. 05 Sep 2023 | 125: Building Your Own Interior Design Business with Sasha Pusey | 00:46:55
This week, I have Design Coven Member Sasha on the podcast to talk about her experience in the interior design industry and how she recently built her own business. A lot of designers ask me about starting their own businesses, which is amazing, but I find most aren’t aware of all the work that goes on behind the scenes (often spanning several years) before most designers go out on their own successfully. Sasha’s story is a great example of the process many of us move through before being ready to jump out on our own. Sasha also took advantage of all the Design Coven membership benefits, including mentorship with me, and she talks about how this helped her gain the confidence and skills needed to manage her own business. If you’re considering membership in the Design Coven but want to hear more about how it can move you forward and elevate your business, this episode is a must-listen! About Sasha Sasha has been practicing interior design since graduating from Florida State University in 2014 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Interior Design. She has had the pleasure of working with Architectural and Design firms all over the world. Now, she’s excited to begin a new chapter designing dream homes, boutique hotels, wanderlust restaurants, and more. She is passionate about creating spaces that positively impact individuals. She thrives on connecting, listening and implementing an innovative design that is both aesthetically beautiful and functional for the user. Over the course of her professional career, she’s played a key role in a variety of projects in various sectors, including corporate and healthcare, but hospitality/multi-family and residential design is where she truly shines. 21 Feb 2023 | 084: Artist Spotlight: Taylor Chapin | 00:41:14
This week I welcome artist Taylor Chapin to the podcast to tell us about her journey in the art world and how she came to embrace life as an artist. Taylor also explains her process and the main theme you can find in her work, which is commentary on our consumer culture. Artwork is an important part of our designs, and knowing more about the work of local artists like Taylor can help you design something truly unique. Listen in and consider her pieces for your next project! In this episode, I refer to Episode 50 with Andrew Utt of ICA. If you missed it or would like to revisit that conversation, you can check it out here. Guest Bio Working in both oil and acrylic, Taylor Chapin's paintings examine advertising, branding, superficiality, and the construction of value under the lens of American neoliberal capitalism. Her work questions our mindless drive toward industrialized American consumerism, the contents of which fill and fetishize our interior and exterior spaces. She reimagines mundane consumer goods emphasizing their inherent banality while simultaneously enshrining them, questioning how value is manufactured and challenging the perceptions of what is real/unreal, valuable/valueless. She is drawn to the allure of what lies underneath. She drapes, wraps, and covers with various fabrics to transform once recognizable forms into abstracted shapes, semi-composed inklings of what lies below. It is this illusory quality of implied volume and depth that bemuses and betrays the two dimensional space of the stretched canvas, allowing the painted surface to become an additional layer of the facade. Chapin was born and raised in San Diego, California. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from San Francisco Art Institute and recently graduated with a Master of Fine Arts at University of California San Diego. She lives and works in San Diego, California. 06 Dec 2022 | 071: How Interior Designers Charge for their Services | 00:13:15
One of the questions that new interior designers or business owners frequently ask me is, “How much should I charge?” I’ve talked to several other interior designers about their pricing and have experimented with different ways myself, so in this solo episode, I break down three different methods you can use to charge as an interior designer: hourly, flat rate, and by square footage. 08 Jun 2023 | 112: Sacred Spaces Series with Madouk Collection: Creating Intentional Spaces | 00:43:54
In our fourth episode in the Sacred Spaces Series with Madouk Collection, Taylor and I talk about the importance of being intentional when we create spaces for our clients and for ourselves. The spaces we spend the most time in have the ability to either drain our energy or help us recharge it, which is why it is important to design rooms with intention—and buy the products that are placed in them with intention. This means understanding where and how products are made as well as how we want to use them and how we want them to make us feel. As an example, Taylor explains how Madouk Collection rugs are infused with intention through a truly special process. This episode will inspire you to look more closely at what you put in a space and how it can function on both a physical and spiritual level. About Madouk Madouk Collection helps eco-conscious and socially aware people dealing with the difficulty in finding genuinely ethical and sustainable products achieve a stylish and comfortable living space through offering a carefully curated selection of ethically sourced, handmade rugs and home décor items. 08 Aug 2023 | 122: Artist Spotlight: Joanna Cutri | 00:49:41
I’m excited to share another local artist with you this month, Joanna Cutri. She is a visual artist and her work includes painting, drawing, and sculpture. She describes how her love for art developed and how her work has evolved, especially since the pandemic. We also talk about her experience working with interior designers and why she loves this particular type of collaboration. Joanna’s ability to get quiet, listen, and trust the signs and synchronicities is inspiring, and she shares some stories around that in this episode. The Design Coven will be doing a studio tour to see Joanna’s work in person. Be sure to follow @thedesigncoven on Instagram or join us at designcoven.com/join to be notified when the tour is scheduled! About Joanna Joanna Cutri, a Los Angeles native, has an extensive visual arts background that spans the globe. Her paintings are collected internationally, featured in exclusive design projects, and exhibited in various galleries. She works in various sizes ranging from small, intimate studies to over sized 6-7ft panels. Her complex, personal style combines various mixed mediums and collage elements, resulting in layers upon layers of color, texture and imagery. The recurring theme and signature style of her work is a monochromatic palette, translucent, ethereal layers and fluid, dreamlike shapes that evoke a sense of calm and peace. Joanna's exposure to different cultures and world travels have greatly impacted how she creates and approaches her own work. Joanna lived and worked in Bali, Indonesia, for 10 years. Her vision of life and art were deeply inspired by the rich, creative culture and religion of the Balinese people, as well as the exotic, surrounding nature in which she lived in. Joanna also lived in the South of France in Biarritz for a year and a half to complete her collection of the Zhang Jie Jia mountains in the Hunan province of central China for her artist in residency program with the Nock Art Foundation in Hong Kong in 2014. Joanna has had numerous solo and group exhibitions in southeast Asia, Australia, South Africa as well as in the US and in Europe. Joanna received her Bachelors of Fine Arts degree from the University of Georgia in 1998 after studying in Cortona, Italy. She currently lives and works in Southern California after having lived in New York City for 3 years. 28 Mar 2023 | 093: Building Your Authority as a Holistic Interior Designer Even When It’s Not Trending in Your Territory | 00:09:41
In this short solo episode, I talk about how you can build your authority as a Holistic Interior Designer. I have a lot of designers tell me they’re worried about marketing themselves as Holistic Interior Designers because it’s not as popular or understood where they live, and they’re the only one they know of who is doing this type of work. But I think this is a great opportunity for you to establish yourself as the authority in this space. 17 Oct 2023 | 131: Behind-the-Scenes Design Series - Bivouac 2.0 | 00:50:29
This week I welcome my friend Lara Worm of Bivouac Ciderworks to the podcast for a conversation about community and design. Lara and I are currently collaborating on the design of “Bivouac 2.0,” or Bivouac Adventure Lodge, a beautiful gathering space for cider tasting–and much more–in the North Park neighborhood of San Diego. This episode (and future ones to come) will give you a look inside the design process in the hospitality space, from beginning to end. This project is a great example of how we as designers can help bring the dreams and visions of our clients to life through the addition of little, meaningful details. It is also an example of one of my collaborations with a female business owner, which carries a different vibe and flow. I can’t wait to share more about this project with you! About Lara Lara Worm, co-founder, CEO, and self-described “Adventure Guide” of Bivouac Ciderworks, has never followed a traditional path. Lara is a native San Diegan raised in her family’s food and beverage business, however, she wandered “off trail” – as per usual – and went on to pursue a career as a homicide prosecutor in Washington, D.C. After a decade on the East Coast, Lara returned to San Diego and found herself back in the world of hospitality. As an ardent world traveler and adventurous foodie, Lara was first introduced to cider during stints living in Australia and England. Bivouac Ciderworks takes that inspiration from cider culture around the world, but brings a west coast irreverence and style to the traditional drink. A lifelong hiker and outdoor adventurer, and outspoken feminist, Lara somehow found a way to combine her passion for the outdoors, fine food and drink, and social justice, in crafting Bivouac’s lifestyle brand and craft ciders. Lara embraces her adventure by road tripping across the country with Jamie, rock climbing with her dog Cooper, and plotting her eventual move to Mexico. 11 Oct 2022 | 061: Embracing Experimentation in Retail Spaces with Christine Flannigan | 00:55:13
Commercial Interior Designer Christine Flannigan joins me in this episode to talk about her process in designing retail spaces. Christine really embraces experimentation and quirkiness in her designs, putting her own unique spin on each space she creates. She shares what her path into the design world was like, highlighting both the fun aspects of designing for retail spaces and the challenges. We also discuss what it’s like to strive for a better balance between our work and home lives. Guest Bio Christine is a mixed media artist currently practicing art and commercial interior design in San Diego. She was trained at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, and currently specializes in experiential art installations. When she joined the team at Modern Times Beer, Christine found herself a home in the beverage industry. Her time at Modern Times taught her to be uninhibited and to trust the team she worked with. During the pandemic, she got the opportunity to make an outdoor event space in Barrio Logan called “Sideyard” attached to ReBru Spirits, and from there, she met the wonderful team at Kove. Kove needed brand direction, and Christine was in the right place at the right time with the skills they needed. She already adored the people and the brand behind it and was lucky to have found Kove at the time she did. Christine then designed the tasting room in Miramar that opened in June of 2022. It was designed to be a ‘modern eclectic experience that can seamlessly transition from day to night.’ Christine’s interior spaces continue to highlight the work she and others produce as fine artists. No two spaces should ever look the same, and bespoke installations are a signature of the work she produces. 16 Mar 2023 | 090: How Procrastination Can Move Your Interior Design Business Forward | 00:14:22
In this solo episode, I explain how procrastination can actually help our interior design businesses grow. After listening to a book on Audible called Who Not How by Dan Sullivan and Dr. Benjamin Hardy, I realized that the tasks I was procrastinating on were the ones I needed to hand off to others. I stopped focusing so much on how I was going to get these tasks done and instead found who could help me get them done. I share which tasks I’ve handed off and how that has helped me take my business to the next level. I also explain how the Design Coven can help you do this, too! 18 Jan 2024 | 147: Elevating My Business, 7 Reasons Why I Ditched Hourly Billing | 00:14:47
A lot of new interior designers ask me how they should price their services, specifically whether they should bill hourly or do a flat rate. In this episode, I’m sharing my experience with different pricing structures and how I ultimately came to the decision to ditch hourly billing. I’ve been doing a flat rate since 2022, and I’ve found that this is what works best for me and my clients. I give you 7 reasons why you might want to consider doing the same. I’ll be going much deeper into my exact pricing structure (how I get my flat rate, what my markups are and how I do them, my trade discounts and procurement fees, etc) with Design Coven Pro Members in a special workshop on January 19th. Guest Bio After earning a degree in International Business from UC Irvine and a decade of working in consulting, tech, and wellness, Amy took the leap and started PARU in 2017. The idea quickly grew from a pop-up with tea educational workshops to a full-time business, operating both two locations in-store and online. In addition to leading the team, Amy serves as the primary tea educator, buyer, and master blender. She enjoys working with her hands and creating nostalgia-inspired teas like our Blue Chamomile and Pandan Waffle. 03 May 2022 | 014 Small Living & Sustainable Design with Curtis and Christina | 01:17:20
I am honored to welcome design and small living experts Curtis and Christina Micklish to Bewitching the Home. In this episode, we talk about designing smaller spaces and how to make them more functional. We also talk about the choices we can make when building or remodeling our homes to reduce our footprint and protect our environment. Guest Bio Against their Real Estate agent's advice, Christina and Curtis bought a fixer with "good bones" 3 years into their unwed relationship. A 5 year renovation turned into 9 with the two realizing that 1,700 sq. ft. on nearly an acre of land was not the life they hoped for. They wanted a life of less that offered freedom to experience more. Letting it all go to live in a 425 sq. ft. Hillcrest treehouse made Curtis' recent project, Cayuca, an attainable and sustainable concept. 29 Aug 2023 | 124: Breathing New Life into Fallen Trees with San Diego Urban Timber | 00:48:46
This special replay of Episode 30, Breathing New Life into Fallen Trees, features my friends Dan and Jessica of San Diego Urban Timber. I want to share this episode with you again as a reminder of the many amazing partners that we can work with locally that support our mission as holistic interior designers and that also bring something truly unique to our designs. Dan and Jessica build amazing pieces for homes out of reclaimed San Diego trees. The pieces they create are functional art, meaning they are beautiful and serve a purpose. They are visual proof of what can be done with our own natural resources—resources that would have otherwise been discarded. Dan and Jessica also share their story about how they began working with reclaimed wood and how San Diego Urban Timber grew into what it is today. About San Diego Urban Timber SD Urban Timber is San Diego’s original local wood resource, breathing new life into fallen trees and other materials which would otherwise be discarded. Their business is driven through healthy collaborations between their material, their clients, and their vision. In their process, they strive to steward their wood to elicit the most out of each piece, and transform it into utilitarian artwork fulfilling the collaborative visions they create with their customer. Their services include custom furniture for residential and commercial space, a full service woodshop, and reclaimed local-exotic wood slabs from the heart of San Diego. Dan has a degree in fine art from UCLA and is an accomplished artisan, wood expert, and innovator in design/build utilizing reclaimed and repurposed materials. Jess is a credentialed Holistic Health Practitioner with a passion for people, art, and nature. She excels in expanding relationships and exploring the potential of color, resin, and organic materials.
