07 Feb 2022114: HERself Expert: Stephi Wagner on the Mother Wound00:59:25

Mother wound is a subject that we really wanted to cover here on the podcast, which is why we just knew when we found today’s guest on Instagram that we had to bring her on the show. If you’re not familiar with what mother wound is, or who it even applies to, we can assure you that you will leave this episode being more informed on this subject.

Stephi Wagner is the Founder of The Mother Wound Project, which is fueled by the power of lived experience. Every member of the MWP Team not only has the relevant training and experience in fields such as psychotherapy, psychology and program management but also personal experience with and demonstrated recovery from the mother wound themselves.

In this episode, Stephi reveals how becoming aware of and addressing the mother wound is really all about reclaiming ourselves and breaking the silence, isolation, and often generation cycles that exist with the mother wound. She provides the first steps to take and helpful resources to start healing the mother wound right now

If this episode resonates with you, or you know someone who could benefit by listening to it, we would love it if you could share it and tag us in your Instagram Stories.

If you’re listening on the day this episode is published, February 14th, 2022, it’s the very first day of our book club that we’re doing with the HERself Podcast Patreon members, and we can’t wait to dive into Atlas of the Heart by the amazing Brené Brown (who is one of our favorite authors)!

To paraphrase a quote from Brené’s, we should all strive to live a life with regrets in order to learn, become braver, and to teach us things we wouldn’t have experienced otherwise. A life full of reflection is worth living, and we’ll explore this life-changing concept in this episode and inside the book club with you.

21 Feb 2022116: HERself Expert Karrie Locher on Building Confidence in Your Own Journey00:39:00

Motherhood is beautiful, but it’s exhausting and hard at the same time, and we’d be lying if we said it was always easy raising children. Today’s expert guest is Karrie Locher, who is someone that faces these struggles and openly shares about them so that she can help others on their journey.

We see a lot of Karrie on Instagram where she has a large following, but we’re so excited to dive into her behind-the-scenes here so that we can all get to know her a bit better and hear more about her life with 4 precious kiddos and her husband. We’ll cover some of the topics that she’s so well known for as a postpartum RN with nearly a decade of experience caring for moms and babies, and more recently she furthered her credentials and became a certified lactation consultant as well.

If you’re tired of the curated Instagram feeds and images on television that show mothers who seem to be in total control raising their children 100 percent of the time, you’ll find this conversation refreshing because Karrie is not only an expert on these subjects, but she is real about her own journey in motherhood.

We hope you enjoy listening to this episode with Karrie as much as we did in recording it, and that it gives you permission to always be in a state of learning.

28 Feb 2022117: HERself Expert Larissa Geleris on Overstimulation in Parenthood00:39:55

When you’re in the weeds of parenting it can all feel so heavy, and sensory overload is something that so many of us struggle with as parents. This is why we’re looking forward to bringing you this conversation with Larissa Geleris, an Occupational Therapist who has been on a mission to help people become aware of their sensory processing. Larissa supports parents and their children, because if you know more about how sensory works, you’ll be able to be a more empathetic parent and have more tools available for both you and your child.

In this episode, Larissa brings a topic to light that is relevant for so many members of this community. Not only are the ideas and concepts she shares backed by science, but they are tangible and doable for anyone. You’ll hear about “reset nachos” and so many more helpful tips from Larissa, and we recommend you try implementing just one or two of the strategies she talks about into your daily life. When you do, you’ll see a world of difference this will make for you and your family!

07 Mar 2022118. Investing in You00:30:41

Both of us are always reading books, and oftentimes we’re reading the same book at the same time. On today’s episode, we’re looking at a specific chapter from Eve Rodsky’s amazing book, Find Your Unicorn Space: Reclaim Your Creative Life in a Too-Busy World (Eve also happens to be past guest of this podcast, and we encourage you to check out that conversation we had with her)!

With this podcast we want to get women one step further than they are today, and the chapter from Eve’s book that spoke so loudly to us was about something that women in our community often struggle with. So many of them are getting swallowed up by mothering, being a partner, and working, which leaves little time to be who they are outside of these roles. This is something that we have both experienced, so we wholeheartedly understand.

In today’s episode, we’ll be encouraging you to ask yourself the tough questions. What do you enjoy outside of motherhood? What do you do for fun, and what are the hobbies that light you up? These are questions that some women simply can’t answer, because being so entrenched in their roles, they’ve put themselves on the back burner.

We’re hoping to give you a gentle nudge in the right direction here, one that allows you to have interests and to care about things outside of your home and work life. This episode focuses on all parts of you, making sure that you’re giving yourself the time and energy to invest in the relationships that really matter. Ultimately, it’s about making sure that you feel more like YOU by doing the things that help you feel that way!

14 Mar 2022119: HERself Expert Michelle Dempsey: How to Move on with Certified Divorce and Co-Parenting Specialist00:36:37

Even if you’re married, it’s still really important for all of us to understand divorce, which is why we wanted to have today’s special guest join us to share her expertise on this subject.

Michelle Dempsey is a Certified Divorce and Co-Parenting Specialist and host of the podcast, Moms Moving On, which is also the title of her brand new book (that happens to be launching tomorrow, March 15th, 2022, if you’re listening to this episode in real-time)! Michelle is the go-to divorce guru on Instagram, and today she reveals tangible and actionable advice for women who are thinking of separating, are in the midst of the process, or are a friend who is supporting someone going through divorce right now.

As women, we all have to get comfortable in setting boundaries and comfortable with the idea that we’re going to have people mad at us at times, but as Michelle says, this process doesn’t have to be intimidating. We as women always find a way to make it work, and in the end, divorce can be the best thing for not only you and your spouse, but for your children as well.

21 Mar 2022120: The Body Image Episode00:43:22

Body image and health is a topic that we knew we had to talk about again on the podcast, because it’s something that we’ve both been on a journey with over the past year. Today we’re opening the conversation on body image back up and diving deeper into what this process has looked like for us.

We also thought it would be fun to have our friend Nina join us to share her thoughts. The 3 of us just did a swimsuit try-on together showing them to our Instagram followers, and she has some awesome insights that we wanted to share with you in this episode.

Before you listen, we must stress that body image is something that anyone can struggle with, and there is space for women of all shapes and sizes to take part in this discussion. If body image is something that you struggle with hearing about, or you find it to be triggering, give yourself permission to sit this episode out. While we are presenting it in a way that we believe to be safe, we want to add this warning so that you can take care of yourself, as always.

28 Mar 2022121: Shame vs Guilt and The Human Experience00:33:42

Today we’re talking about an important subject and one that can have such a big impact on our lives, especially if we don’t understand it. We’re talking about the shame and the guilt that so many mothers, including ourselves, feel each and every day. As you know, we’re reading Brené Brown’s Atlas of the Heart with our Patreon Book Club, and in the book she helps define what that human experience is for us, and the book can really help us to start to understand the difference between those two words, shame and guilt.

What is so fascinating is that shame and guilt are words that are often used interchangeably, but there is a subtle difference that we need to be aware of. We’ll dive deep into that difference in this episode, as well as share both of our personal experiences with these feelings, along with self-compassion, perfectionism, humiliation, and embarrassment.

These feelings don’t only plague motherhood, but other extremely important parts of our lives as well. Shame is part of the human experience, and we really want to bring it into the light so this community can start growing together. We hope that you can learn from us, and maybe give yourself the empathy that you really need much earlier than we have in the past with ourselves.

04 Apr 2022122. Bring on the Men - Partnership: the Good, the Bad and Everything in Between00:39:29

Today we’re all in for a treat, because we have another Bring on the Men episode! It’s been awhile since Colin and Drew have been on the podcast and a lot has changed since that last time they joined us, including our friendships, as we’re all more comfortable and much more open with each other.

In this episode, we look at partnering and how different seasons of partnership exist. We believe that every couple, including the 4 of us, have things to work on, constantly. Every time we bring Colin and Drew on, there's going to be different things to talk about, but the thing we really like about these Bring on the Men episodes is that the 4 of us are always committed to recalibrating and getting back on track. Whatever we are going through, we want to make sure we get back on track, and we want the same for you.

We had so many important things to touch on about partnership that we decided to make this a special 2-part series with the guys, and you’re not going to want to miss next week’s show where we’ll be focusing on parenting!

11 Apr 2022123. Bring on the Men - Parenting: the Good, the Bad, and Everything in Between00:48:27

They’re back! Colin and Drew are joining us again this week for another Bring on the Men episode, and this week we’re focusing on all things parenting. Drew may have said it best recently when he said that no one prepares you for these little kid years - and we would have to agree!

We want to thank the guys for their vulnerability and openness in sharing what’s behind the curtain of being a dad these days, as they answered some questions that fathers aren’t asked often with some very thoughtful and emotional responses (which makes us love them even more).

We hope you enjoyed this special mini-series with Colin and Drew, and that it inspires conversations between you and your own spouses about some of the important topics that we just scratched the surface on these past two episodes. As always, we would be so grateful if you shared the episode, and tag us on Instagram, @herselfpodcast, with your biggest takeaways.

18 Apr 2022124: HERself Expert: Susie From @busytoddler on Activities, Play and How to Survive the Little Kids Years01:06:31

We could not be more excited to talk with our special guest today, because we have Susie Allison from Busy Toddler with us! Susie is a former kindergarten and first grade teacher turned stay-at-home mom. She is an author and one of Instagram’s favorite moms, because she gives us so many tangible tips to help us navigate the “little kids years” and what to do to keep our children happy, thriving, and frankly, entertained.

A big takeaway that we got from this conversation is that we must remember to give ourselves credit for making it through the hard days, and for everything that we do as parents!

If you enjoyed this episode with Susie too, we would be absolutely honored if you tagged @busytoddler and @herselfpodcast so we can see you enjoying it!

Today we have Abby’s long-time friend Sammy Harrison on the podcast, and she is someone who has been an inspiration to watch over the years. When we talk about the concept of turning pain into courage, this is exactly what Sammy has done with her life! Sammy is a certified life coach, podcaster and former secret binge eater, and in this episode she specifically shares her personal experiences related to binge eating, infidelity and single parenting. Sammy allowed us to ask some very tough questions in this interview, and we are honored that she agreed to be so open with us and our listeners by answering them.

Sammy wants women to know that healing is possible, and that they don’t have to do it alone. We hope that you are as inspired as we are by what she discusses in this episode, and if it resonates with you, please share it with anyone you feel could benefit from hearing this conversation.

09 May 2022127: Rosie Acosta on Finding Presence and Self-Acceptance00:40:38

Self-love, living in the present moment and self-acceptance are things we talk about so often here on the podcast, which is why we’re really excited to bring you our conversation with author, podcaster and meditation teacher Rosie Acosta! We just finished reading Rosie’s book, You Are Radically Loved, which is an invitation to discover the healing power of who you are, body, mind, and spirit. If you haven’t read it yet, this is one book you’re going to want to dig into, as Rosie is on a beautiful journey and she is helping so many women in the process.

We got so much from this interview with Rosie, but most importantly, it was her message of the importance of finding yourself. Whether it’s through yoga, meditation, or just sitting for 5 minutes, we encourage you to use a little bit of time today to reconnect with yourself.

If this episode with Rosie resonates with you, we’d love it if you shared in your Instagram Stories what hit home the most for you. We love seeing your feedback as we continue to develop new content for upcoming episodes!

Motherhood can be hard, and that’s why we like to bring experts on to the podcast to help you, and us, navigate each day as moms. Today’s guest is Kaitlin Soule, a therapist, maternal mental health and anxiety expert, author, and she’s also a HERself listener. It’s been so fun for us to connect with Kaitlin over the last couple of months, and for us to get the opportunity to read her new book, A Little Less of a Hot Mess: The Modern Mom's Guide to Growth & Evolution as we prepared for this interview.

Kaitlin shares so many tips, strategies and advice for moms in this interview, and she really is someone who walks the walk by giving herself permission to be fully who she is, and we hope that this conversation allows you to do the same.

Today’s episode features a really important conversation with Britt Hawthorne, who is an anti-racism educator, teacher, speaker, visionary and advocate. We are such huge fans of Britt and her energy is so infectious that we could not wait to dive into this interview and to share it with you.

What we love about this conversation with Britt is that she explained things in such a non-judgmental way and she answered the questions that so many of us have. Best of all, she gives us the permission to have these tough conversations with our parenting partners and children, as well as providing language to use and her advice for handling anti-racism when it arises.

We’d encourage you to pre-order Britt’s upcoming book, Raising Antiracist Children: A Practical Parenting Guide (which we cannot wait to read!) and watch our Instagram this week as we’ll be sharing more great resources from Britt.

If this episode resonates with you and you think it could help someone in your life, we’d love it if you shared it to your Instagram Stories and tag us, @herselfpodcast and @britthawthorne.

30 May 2022130: Greatest Hits: Our Husbands on Being True Partners00:38:35

With many of us celebrating Memorial Day this week, we thought we’d throw it back to one of the most shared and listened to HERself episodes of all time! This was Episode 3, our very first “Bring On The Men” episode, and it was also our very first one where we had guests on. Drew and Colin joined us to talk about becoming a true partner, and they shared about dividing household tasks, entering parenthood, and that 3-letter-bad-word we refer to as “nag” - plus how to ditch it for good!
There is just so much gold in this episode, whether you’re hearing it for the very first time or you’ve been a HERself listener right from the start!

If this episode resonates with you, we’d love to hear your biggest takeaway and feedback. Leave a review on your favorite podcast app, or let us know on Instagram, @herselfpodcast!

06 Jun 2022131. Emily Oster on Making Confident Decisions in the School Age Years00:34:31

Today we’re excited to be welcoming Emily Oster back on the podcast! The last time Emily joined us to debunk many of the myths we hear as parents, and today she’s specifically sharing her expertise on how we can be more confident in the decisions we’re making as moms with school-aged children.

Emily Oster is a Professor of Economics at Brown University and the author of Expecting Better, Cribsheet and The Family Firm

We were so glad that Emily came back to talk about this topic, because the decisions we must make do get trickier as our kids get older. This is the stage that we are entering right now with our little ones, and we know that many of you are in the same season or getting close to it, so we hope you find the information that Emily shares valuable to you. To hear more great advice from her, we encourage you to check Episode 98, the last time she was here to chat with us!

We’d love it if you shared the episode to your Instagram Stories and tag us, @herselfpodcast and @profemilyoster. If you could do us a favor and write a review wherever you listen to the podcast, we read every single one of them and are so grateful for your support in helping us grow the podcast.

13 Jun 2022132. Bring on the Men: Colin and Abby Talk Parental Stress with a Spirited Child and Strategies for Miscommunication00:38:53

Covid has finally hit the entire Green household, and it resulted in a full week of rearranging plans and alternating childcare. Colin and I thought that this would be the perfect time to record an episode with just the two of us, coming to you from our studio (which happens to be our master bedroom, for the time being)! Today we are focusing on some of the biggest obstacles that we deal with as a family, while also sharing how we’re finding strategies to get through them. We have a feeling that many of our pain points may just be the same ones that your family is going through as well!

Drew and Amy will be doing an interview with each other for an upcoming episode on the podcast, and you won’t want to miss that one! If you are enjoying this type of content, we’d love it if you shared this episode and let us know what you took away from hearing a new perspective on some of the biggest things that we deal with in parenthood, as well as partnership!

27 Jun 2022134. Dr. Chelsea Jackson Roberts with Strategies to Be Where Your Feet Are00:42:32

We’ve got a special treat for you today, as we bring you a conversation we had with the amazing Dr. Chelsea Jackson Roberts. Chelsea earned her teaching credentials and later completed her MA followed by her Ph.D. from the Division of Educational Studies at Emory University in 2014. It is during her experience as a classroom teacher that she began to make connections between literacy development, yoga and other mindfulness practices. Now she’s able to teach hundreds of thousands of people, including celebrity supporters and clientele such as Shonda Rhimes and Jennifer Garner - and she really helped Amy restore after the long pandemic parenting days too!

Chelsea is such an inspiration to us, starting as a teacher and now being on a big platform that she is serving people so well on, and we are so happy that you get that chance to learn from her today. Listen in as she shares more about her journey, including how she is approaching being a mom for the very first time, and Chelsea gives us all a reminder that showing up as ourselves is enough.

11 Jul 2022136. Strategies to Lessen Worry00:37:51

Today’s episode is inspired by something that we go through as hosts of this podcast which you don’t see as listeners, and that is what goes on behind the scenes as we deal with our guests. Every once in a while we have changes or cancellations, and things can get a little bit stressful for us as a result when these curveballs happen. Both of us often ruminate or worry about the impact that it has on our schedule, and that is what we’re focusing on here.

In this episode, we not only share specific strategies that you can use to overcome rumination, but we also reveal our own personal experiences with it and how we’re working to reduce, or eliminate it, as well. Rumination isn’t something that you’re going to solve tomorrow, but just take one step in the right direction whenever you feel that it is popping up for you and see what happens!

If you enjoyed this episode, we’d be so honored if you shared it on Instagram, tagging us @herselfpodcast, and make sure to share it with a friend or someone that you think can benefit from this important message!

25 Jul 2022138. HERself Expert: Haley Sacks from @MrsDowjones - The Financial Episode Every Woman Needs to Hear00:39:42

One topic that we know you tune in for is money, and today we’re covering it with Haley from Mrs. Dow Jones! Haley is a “Financial Pop Star”, and her superpower is the ability to simplify financial matters and make them relatable for her community, which we appreciate so much here at HERself.

In this episode, Haley shares her thoughts on a budget versus financial tracking, what you need to know about credit cards and your credit score, and the tremendous impact that holding regular “money dates” with your partner can have (along with so much more good stuff)!

The big message that we want you to take away from this episode is that you really can start small and build your financial self-esteem over time. Money issues won’t go away on their own, but just by gaining awareness and implementing the strategies that Haley reveals today, you’ll be in a much better position to empower yourself when it comes to your finances.

Haley’s new course, Let’s Invest, is launching on July 28th, 2022, and HERself listeners can use the discount code “HERSELF” for 10% off at https://university.financeiscool.com/p/lets-invest. Hurry, as this promotion will only be available through August 25, 2022!

It would be an understatement to say that we have been looking forward to having today’s guest, Dr. Molly Millwood, back on the podcast! If you’re a long-time listener of HERself, you undoubtedly remember when Molly was with us for Episode 10, which is actually our second most listened to episode of all-time, and one that Amy still receives the most personal messages about.

In this episode, Molly reminds us that not every part of motherhood is going to be enjoyable, and it’s ok to voice this out loud. She also helps us get a new perspective on the invisible load faced by so many women and mothers today, along with revealing why it really is time for us to start prioritizing our female friendships again, and a whole lot more.

If you enjoy this episode, we would love it if you shared it with a friend. Molly’s message is definitely one that needs to be shared with as many people as possible, and don’t forget to tag us on Instagram, @molly.millwood.phd and @herselfpodcast and let us know your biggest takeaways!

08 Aug 2022140. The Mom Guilt Episode00:38:08

Today we are tackling the topic of mom guilt, which is something we talked about way back on Episode 12 of the podcast. This is important to mention, because what we say today is coming from a place of it being two years later. Back then, mom guilt was something that we were struggling more with, which led to both of us doing a lot of work in this area, and we want to share our insights and what we’ve learned with you today.

Motherhood is a journey, and we realize that mom guilt shows up differently in all of us. We think that a lot of people just accept their mom guilt in a way that really holds them back, and we feel that your goal shouldn’t be focused on being selfless, but rather to demonstrate to your children that you are a healthy person.  We hope this episode provides a nudge for you to dive deeper into these feelings of mom guilt, and as always, we’re here for you every step of the way.

If you enjoy this episode and get something from it, we would love it if you shared it with a friend. This message on mom guilt needs to be shared with as many people as possible, and don’t forget to tag us on Instagram, @herselfpodcast and let us know your biggest takeaways!

15 Aug 2022141. Prioritizing Partnership and Friendships in Parenthood00:31:46

Today’s episode is all about relationships, and specifically the power of those in-person friendships that mean so much. We’ll be sharing some of the things that we’ve been going through ourselves lately, but one thing we strongly believe in at  HERself is that you need to have good friends in your life that you can absolutely count on.

Real relationships take time to nurture and the process can’t be rushed, but we want you to be open to the idea of making new friends. During this season of life, there are times that you will need those people close to that you can lean on!

We’ve been thinking about how we can help our listeners grow their roots, and that’s why we want to invite you to join the HERself Podcast Patreon Community, where we take these conversations deeper in our private Facebook Group. Recently, we talked about mom guilt and where it shows up, and in this community we talk about the shame and secrecy that comes with mom guilt, as well as the wins that we don’t normally celebrate with each other. You can join at one of three different tiers to support us as creators, and be part of an exclusive community of over 100 women who are also navigating this crazy thing we call life, at https://www.patreon.com/herselfpodcast.

Hi, it’s Amy here, and today is one episode that I’ve been wanting to do for a long time now! In this episode, you’ll hear me share about my own health journey that I’ve been on for the past year and a half, and I reveal what has happened during this time, where I am today, and more.

Joining me is Sammie Gollup, who is an incredible dietician, to make sure that we have a safe and scientific conversation. With that being said, if hearing about weight gain or weight loss is triggering for you, please sit this episode out and take care of yourself first. In this conversation, we try to be very conscious of the way that we present these topics, but I want you to be aware of your own boundaries and needs, as always.

Today, we want to have a really honest talk about weight gain and how it can impact a person mentally, and then give you the tools that can help you work through this. This episode is meant to be educational through storytelling. In it, I tell my story and Sammie gives some of the science behind it and background from her experience working with many patients. It’s going to be really interesting and informative, and we hope you get lots from it!

05 Sep 2022144. Greatest Hits: HERself Expert Tracy Dalgleish On All Things In-Laws00:41:58

In the United States this week we are celebrating Labor Day, and we know that many of you may be with friends and family and won’t have as much time for your normal Monday morning podcast listen. For this reason, today we are bringing you a Greatest Hits episode, and one that will be especially important if you are with your in-laws this week!

Dr. Tracy Dalgleish joins the HERself Podcast to talk about in-law dynamics as it relates to children. Yes, this is your time to be a parent and your children are so important to you, but also this is the time where your in-laws can shine as grandparents. There will be a learning curve and some challenges involved, but getting through it together in a way where everyone can be happy is what Tracy D focuses on in this episode.

If you like what she shares, you’ll want to tune in Episode 94, which is the second part in this two-part series. In it, we go into in-law dynamics as it relates to the adults in the relationship, because we want you to make sure that you can keep the peace while maintaining your boundaries!

12 Sep 2022145. HERself Expert: Dr. Marisa Franco on the Importance of Adult Friendship00:37:47

One subject that comes up over and over again with our community is friendship, so we’re excited to bring Dr. Marisa Franco, a psychologist and friendship expert, back on the podcast today!

Some of the things we cover in this episode include keeping friendships healthy when we’re in a busy season of life, tools for navigating conflict in friendship (and why conflict isn’t necessarily a bad thing), and ways to approach ending a friendship if the time comes for this to happen. Dr. Marisa also shares her best tips for making new friends, what to say when first engaging with new people, how strong friendships benefit our overall well-being, and so much more.

We really want to make friendship uncomplicated for you and meet you where you are, because it’s normal to feel nervous about these topics. If friendships are something that you’re working on, like we are, we are proud of you because we recognize that this can be hard!

If you enjoy what Dr. Marisa shares today, you’ll want to get a copy of her brand new book, Platonic: How the Science of Attachment Can Help You Make--and Keep--Friends, which is available now! As always, we also want to hear your biggest takeaways from this episode, and you can tag us on Instagram, @DrMarisaGFranco and @herselfpodcast. 19 Sep 2022146. HERself Expert: Clinical Psychologist Dr. Becky Kennedy on How You and Your Child can Feel Good Inside01:00:19

You are in for a treat today! We are so excited to be bringing you our conversation with Dr. Becky Kennedy, who is a clinical psychologist, mom of three, and founder of Good Inside, the expert-guided, community-powered platform equipping parents with a new way of seeing and solving challenges at home.

Dr. Becky meets parents where they are at, and it’s so refreshing to get her insight on parenting, because a lot of these conversations are often happening behind closed doors. Today’s episode is a reminder that wherever we are in motherhood, we can start over right now by re-evaluating and changing our behaviors. By doing so we’ll not only help our kids, but we’ll start to help ourselves in the process.

We encourage you to visit Dr. Becky’s website at https://www.goodinside.com/ and check out all the amazing resources that she has available for moms, and if you enjoy this episode, we’d be so honored if you shared it on Instagram, tagging @drbeckyatgoodinside and @herselfpodcast.

21 Sep 2022147. Real Life Parenting - How We Implemented Dr. Becky Kennedy's Teachings00:37:42

Welcome to this bonus episode of HERself! It is our dream to someday bring you two episodes each week, so today is the test for that. What you might not see behind the scenes is that our amazing sponsors want a certain amount of downloads, so we have an ask of you. If we do go to two episodes a week, it’s important that you keep listening and sharing these episodes to help us accomplish this dream! With that being said, we’re excited to continue providing you with the best resource that we can to support you along your journey.

Today we want to reflect on Episode 146 with Dr. Becky, because Dr. Becky is someone who meets people where they are, and she’s not the type of expert who will shame you by pretending there is a “perfect” way to parent. Rather, she is trying to come alongside you and to help wherever you are.

Implementing some of the things that we talk about in this episode can make such a difference in helping you and your kids to get through the tougher times, by you providing support but not solving every problem for them. It might not show up at that very moment, but little by little you’ll start to see that all these hard conversations will lead to some really amazing transformations!

Again, we would be so grateful if you could text, email, and share this episode so that we can bring you even more content weekly. As always, we want to hear your biggest takeaways and how this has helped you, so please tag us at @herselfpodcast!

Feeling burnt out? Longing for more time and energy for yourself? Don’t know where to start? We’ve been there. Let us help you navigate this busy season while making yourself a priority. Go to https://view.flodesk.com/pages/6324c8a1821b5d8e1a7d5466 and be the first to know when the doors open on our new self-care course!

03 Oct 2022149. Amelia Nagoski on Preventing and Overcoming Burnout00:53:17

Today we are diving into the all-too-familiar topics of stress and burnout with our special guest, Amelia Nagoski. Amelia is an author, speaker and conductor who holds a Doctorate in Music from The University of Connecticut. She wrote the New York Times bestseller, Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle, with her identical twin sister, Emily. The book contains science and stories for people, especially women, who have felt exhausted and overwhelmed by everything they have to do, yet they still feel like they’re not doing enough.

This conversation with Amelia is a reminder to take yourself seriously and to start listening to that voice inside of you. You won’t be able to show up fully in this world until you begin taking this thing called burnout seriously, and by figuring out what your needs truly are!

We’d love it if you could share this episode and message with anyone you feel could benefit from it, because burnout is such a relevant topic today for so many people. Don’t forget to tag us, @burnoutbookgroup and @herselfpodcast, and let us know what resonated the most with you!

17 Oct 2022151. Wills, Trusts, and Everything You Need to Know about Future Planning01:13:42

Before we jump into this episode, we wanted to let you know that it is longer than our usual episodes, and we talk about some heavy stuff in this one. In fact, this might be the type of episode where you take a couple of breaks while listening, and one that you send to your partner to check out. Today, we’ll be talking about what would happen if we should die, which is a topic that could take a while for you to process, because as you’ll hear, there is a lot to consider here.

Our expert guest today is attorney Eric Christoffersen, who has been with the law firm Grams & Christoffersen for 13 years and counting. He started as a law student, clerking for Founder, David F. Grams who established the firm nearly 30 years ago. After graduating law school, cum laude from the University of Wisconsin Law School, he became an associate attorney and then later a shareholder. Now with 11+ years of practice experience he is the Managing Shareholder of Grams & Christoffersen, S.C., leading a great team to serve their clients into the future.

We think this episode with Eric is a really important one, and we discuss something that a lot of people will go through in their lifetimes. We feel that thinking about the future is worth having an entire episode on, and we hope you get a lot from this interview with Eric, who was in charge of helping Amy plan for her future.

07 Nov 2022154. Getting Real on Relationships After Kids with the Shrink Chicks00:57:31

You’re in for treat today, as our special guests are Emmalee and Jennifer from the Shrink Chicks, who are also the co-founders of The Therapy Group. In this episode, they share their expertise on conflict resolution and communication strategies to use in your romantic relationship. We really felt like we were getting couples therapy in front of thousands of people during this conversation, as they covered so many of the issues that many of us face in our relationships!

Before diving in, we want to give the disclaimer that what we talk about here is for people that are in healthy relationships, and if there is any sort of abuse happening, these things won’t apply to your relationship.

A key message that we took from what Emmalee and Jennifer had to share is that we really don’t need to be having these conversations on our own. Go seek the resources and get the right tools in place so that you can have a better life and stronger relationship with your partner!

As always, we want to hear your feedback and the biggest takeaways from what you heard in this episode, so please share your thoughts on Instagram and tag us, @shrinkchicks and @herselfpodcast.

Needless to say, we have learned so much throughout our own journeys and we’re here to share the tips and tricks for what to do, as well as what not to do, during the holiday season.

A lot of what we talk about today will not only help you this year in the moments of overwhelm you might experience, but we want it to make future holidays easier for you, more streamlined, and to give you the space that you need so that you can actually be present and enjoy the time with your loved ones!

This week we are answering your questions you submitted on Instagram. We know several of you are probably busy with your families this week and we wanted to keep this episode lighthearted and fun.

We know as business partners that it can be hard to get along all the time. We dive into whether or not we fight a lot and what we appreciate the most about one another. Another relationship several of you had questions on was the ones we have with our spouses. Tune in to hear what we are both currently working on in our marriages.

As many of you know we have both been on health journeys and we share where we are at when it comes to our mental and physical wellbeing. Amy shares details on how she is focusing on her nutrition whereas Abby gets into the nitty gritty on her journey with SSRIs.

We go into what each of our families do as rituals around the holidays and what our typical morning routines look like. You’ll be surprised to hear that Abby’s changes on a daily basis.

If you have been with us since the beginning of this podcast, we want to thank you for following along. Many of you are wondering if or when a HERself podcast event is in the making? Tune in to this week’s episode to learn more about where we are at with that!

28 Nov 2022157. Real Parenting: What to Do When the Script Doesn't Work with Claire Lerner00:55:58

We both have experience raising children who seem to not respond to gentle parenting. It has been frustrating for the both of us at times because it has made us feel isolated and exhausted. We are so excited to have Claire Lerner on today to share her expertise in this area.

Claire shares what to do if your child is wired differently during moments of aggression towards others. She explains that our children are not trying to be manipulative in any way, just that they need boundaries to help themselves regulate.

Have you ever wondered if timeouts are truly a thing of the past? Claire explains her concept of a safe space break and how this alone time can help kids get back to a place of calm.

With it being the middle of the holiday season, we know that these large family gatherings can be major triggers for our kiddos who tend to be big reactors. Claire helps us navigate the conversations we can have with not only our friends and family members, but with our children's teachers as well.

And next week, we will both share our learnings from implementing Claire's strategies into our own households. So be sure to tune in to hear how these teachings are helping us with our own personal situations at home.

05 Dec 2022158. Real Parenting: How We Parent Our Big Reactors00:34:38

This week we are trying something new. We’ve decided to implement the things that we learned from our interview with Claire Lerner last week. We both have children who we consider to be big reactors. So we took our insights from our conversation with Claire and put them into action in our own homes!

One of Amy’s biggest takeaways was that each of her children might need individualized things. Her big reactor needs to be parented differently than his brothers. Continual praise and more time are a coping mechanism that seem to help.

Abby realized that when these types of kids have these big reactions they aren’t trying to cause a challenge. They are just trying to react in a way that their own body needs. They’re more sensitive, more empathetic, and look at the world in their own unique way.

The thing that we want you to know is that we don’t get it perfect every time. We are learning right alongside you. We are both, everyday, normal moms who aren’t experts. We struggle through this parenting thing as well. And it does get better. Both of our big reactors are around age five now and it has taken us a little longer to learn what parenting techniques work. We are making progress and hope this episode helps you do the same.

12 Dec 2022159. Why Adult Friendships are Hard and How to Make Them Work with Dr. Miriam Kirmayer00:59:27

Adult friendships are hard. We hear this over and over again from our community. That is why we are so excited to sit down with Dr. Miriam Kirmayer today to discuss what we can do to foster, build, and maintain these special relationships in our lives.

Dr. Miriam is a clinical psychologist, writer, speaker, and friendship expert who has spent a decade researching the science of friendship and social connection. She shares with us her expertise on how we can build new friendships as adults and how we can stay connected to our friends once we become parents.

If your friendships have taken a back burner since you became an adult, this episode will strike a cord. Dr. Miriam goes into simple techniques we can use to make sure there is a match between the type of support that’s being given from our friends and the type that we are really looking for.

She helps us navigate the tough situation of ending long term friendships and identifying when they are no longer serving us. We can only entertain so many friendships at once. Dr. Miriam helps us recognize when it's time to let friendships go so we can make room for new ones.

If adult friendships have been a struggle for you, know that you are not alone. We hope this episode helps you get some ideas on how you can better your relationship with your current friends and put yourself out there to make new ones!

19 Dec 2022160. When Worry Becomes an Issue with Kate Borsato00:48:59

What is the difference between worry and anxiety? And how do we recognize when our thoughts are causing a negative impact on our everyday lives? This week we are bringing Kate Borsato back on the show to discuss this matter. Kate is a therapist who specializes in anxiety, especially in motherhood. She talks to us about what exactly worry is compared to anxiety and offers great suggestions on what we can do if we recognize some of these problematic symptoms in ourselves.

Kate guides us through different exercises including how to surrender to our anxious thoughts and focus our attention on what we do want to be thinking about instead. She encourages us to write down what a good mother means to us and to make sure we are including ourselves on that list. Even things like deep breathing are exercises that can help get us out of that  worrisome headspace and back to where our feet are planted.

So many of us can relate to the struggle we have when we are able to watch our partners participate in a mindless, relaxing activity for a few hours at a time when we ourselves simply cannot. Kate goes into details about how society puts this pressure on moms to constantly be productive and suggests that we take a page right out of our partner's playbook by allowing ourselves to participate in activities that make us feel creative.

If you worry that your anxious tendencies are going to be passed on to your children, listen in. Kate explains that those of us who are more prone to anxiety can be caused by many factors including childhood trauma, abusive romantic relationships, or we may just be genetically more prone to worry.

It is right in the middle of the holidays so if you are traveling this week it is the perfect time to listen to one of our most downloaded, re-shared episodes of 2022. This week we are re-airing our episode with Susie from @busytoddler. The biggest takeaway you will have from this episode is to give yourself credit for making it through the hard days and to give yourself a pat on the back for the incredible job you are doing as a parent.

If you enjoyed this episode with Susie too, we would be absolutely honored if you tagged @busytoddler and @herselfpodcast so we can see you enjoying it!

09 Jan 2023163. Real Partnership: How We Implemented Dr. Morgan Cutlip's Relationship Wisdom00:31:12

This week we are talking about how we implemented some of the things Dr. Morgan Cutlip talked about in last week’s episode. We have tried a few of her tips in our own relationships and we share what is working and what is not working so well.

We hope this episode normalizes that in this season of life with all of the demands it can lead to some moments where you wish you would have acted differently or you wish your partner would have acted differently and that's just the truth of the matter with how much stuff we all have going on.

We hope that you can take something from this episode. Whether it's the strategy of using, “the story I’m telling myself is…” as a way to start tough conversations and help your partner understand you better. Or maybe it is in the idea of helping yourself and your partner feel more visible and valued by giving really specific compliments.

Whatever you need today, we hope you are able to take it with you.

16 Jan 2023164. Cassie from The Caffeinated Clean on Decluttering and Divorce00:46:32

We have the pleasure of speaking with Cassie from @thecaffeinatedclean this week. Whenever we talk about decluttering and organizing, we get such a positive response from this community. We know that a messy house or space leads to a messy mind. Cassie walks us through ways that we can start decluttering our lives.

She talks about cleaning our cleaners, organizing and how we can get our kids on board to make our lives more streamlined by having them step up into their own independence. We also get into details on Cassie’s recent divorce. If you are someone who is contemplating divorce or are recently separated Cassie gives her heart and helps us figure out this tough transition.

Be sure to tag both @thecaffeinatedclean and @herselfpodcast to show us all your before and afters. We love to see them!

Jess helps us by providing things we can do or say as parents to support these healthy relationships among our kids.

30 Jan 2023166. A Mom's Perspective When a Child Has Delays00:32:14

Have you ever had that feeling that your child is behind in something? This week the two of us sit down and share some insight on what has been going on in our lives when it comes to feeling like we are letting our children down.

Abby shares a personal story on the weight that can come with having a child with special needs. Amy gets vulnerable on what it felt like when she was told her kindergartener was behind in reading. Oftentimes, as women, we take the load of the heavy issues. Today we talk about what our village looks like and how we can lean on them through these tough times.

We know that in moments like this it can feel like you might want to throw in the towel. But remember, you are allowed to have these ups and downs. You’re allowed to have success and the hard days. We hope that you have a village of support where you feel like you can be honest about your relationships, parenting, and the things that are really, really tough.

06 Feb 2023167. Prioritizing Your Spending, Investing, and Financial Goals with Carly Hill00:52:29

Today we have Carly Hill from Debt Free Mom on. If you’ve ever been resistant to the idea of budgeting because it seems archaic, we’ve been there too. But we love Carly’s approach. She gives actionable, achievable steps to help you on your financial path.

Carly is the mom of four who teaches women how budgets can help them gain more financial freedom and lower their stress. She covers whether or not we should be saving, paying off debt, and investing all at the same time or if we should be prioritizing one over the other. Carly breaks down what a budget is and why it’s important to have one.

If budgeting seems overwhelming to you, or you don’t even know where to start, Carly speaks on this as well. She talks about how money mindset comes into play with how we approach our finances and what it can look like when you are incentivized differently than your partner.

There’s a lot of numbers talk in this episode, but don’t let that overwhelm you because Carly breaks it down. This is definitely an episode you’ll want to listen to with your partner and you might even want to listen to a few parts twice, depending on where you’re at in your financial journey.

13 Feb 2023168. Talking Codependency and Resentment with Vanessa Bennett and Dené Logan01:04:24

We have two awesome guests joining our show today; Vanessa Bennett and Dené  Logan. They are therapists who do a deep dive into the psychology of the soul. They have their own podcast, Cheaper Than Therapy. Their whole point is to demystify, destigmatize, and desensitize what goes on both inside the therapy room and in daily life.

This is the type of episode that is going to push you. It also challenged us. Vanessa and Dené  speak so vividly on why it’s important to have a sense of self throughout your entire life. They define what codependency is and how that compares to interdependence. We ask them the hard question of whether we should wait for our partners to change, should we try to change them or is it best to just accept them for who they are?

In the three years of hosting this podcast, this episode is one of my (Abby) very favorites episodes. You’re not going to want to miss it!

You guys are in for a treat today because we have Erica Djossa; formerly known as Happy as a Mother, now known as Momwell, on the show. We feel like her mission and our mission here at the HERself podcast run side by side. We both try to get women and mothers the best information possible.

Throughout this interview we nod our heads along with all the advice Erica gives on topics including the invisible load in motherhood, what causes the feeling of being on edge, toxic positivity and so much more.

At the end of the episode, Erica speaks on Dads. We get asked so often, from you, about how your partner/husband can get resources. We wanted to make sure we covered that inside this interview as well. Because we all know Dads and partners struggle too.

Our guest today is Dr. Ann-Louise Lockhart. She is a pediatric psychologist, a parent coach, an author, and a speaker. And let us tell you, we wish we would’ve had this episode sooner in our parenting journeys. Dr. Lockhart walks us through actual, real-life scenarios we are going through with our kiddos.

She also answers the tough questions that so many of us have. How do we handle our kid’s fears and anxieties? Where does rebellion come from and what can we do about it? How can we better understand a child who is lacking motivation? And, how do we help our kids not miss out on a commitment because they are nervous?

13 Mar 2023172. Going Behind the Scenes on Our Health and Partnerships00:34:13

With this episode we are going to take you behind the scenes. We usually do this type of thing over on Patreon but we know many of you are interested in more episodes where we are just being ourselves and talking about what we are going through. We would love to hear what you think about this type of episode and if you’d like to hear more like it.

We go through what it is like for us to have different social needs than our partner. For Amy, it can be a struggle when she is more of a homebody and her spouse is more social. Or the opposite can be true as well. Abby tends to be more of a busy body and, at times, wishes her partner would have more real-life friends. Navigating these situations is tough and we chat about what works for us in these scenarios.

If you’ve been a long time listener then you know that we both have been going through our own health journeys. As we enter our mid-thirties, we are finding that this season of life can be challenging. Especially if you’ve had children. Both of us give you an update on where we are currently at and what tools we use to help us feel our best.

We are doing a book club this month, so if you aren’t a member of our Patreon community yet, be sure to head over there to join us for a monthly bonus episode and to participate in this month’s book; The Measure by Nikki Erlick.

20 Mar 2023173. Faith Broussard Cade of @fleurdelisspeaks on Why You Shouldn't Put Yourself Last00:43:55

We are so excited to introduce today’s guest, Faith Broussard Cade. We have been long time fans of hers and she is the woman behind the movement of self-care. Faith’s handwritten notes that she shares online tend to go viral. She started writing these notes as a means to heal from a personal accident and in today’s interview she explains how her messages have helped many others heal as well.

If you are someone who struggles with rest, Faith shares how we can turn that to-do list off in our head and actually take some time for ourselves. She shares a list of self-care items that we can benefit from that are inexpensive and tangible ideas to pull ourselves up from the bottom of our priority list.

We would love for you to do two things for us this week. 1. Make sure you are subscribed to our show so these new episodes show up for you every week and 2. Leave us a review. Those help us get our important conversations, like this one with Faith, to more ears!

27 Mar 2023174. How to Find a Balance Between Toxic Positivity and Optimism with Whitney Goodman of @sitwithwhit00:39:39

Today we are so excited to have a conversation with Whiteny Goodman, the radically honest psychotherapist behind the very popular Instagram account @sitwithwhit. You may have seen her information and content in dozens of publications including the New York Times and New York Magazine.

We love this interview because it takes the toxically positive environment that many of us are living in and it gives it a little bit of a shift. We don’t want to be walking around in complete negativity but there definitely is a balance and Whitney walks us through ways we can find that balance while helping ourselves and our relationships in the process.

Whitney covers everything from why she got started with toxic positivity to how we can show up for a friend who is going through something we might not fully understand. She also helps us identify the connection between people pleasing and toxic positivity.

If you haven’t already, we would love for you to leave us a review. Reviews are so important to podcasts and help us get our message across to new ears!

Yara chats with us on how over functioning can affect us both short and long term. She gives us prompts to replace more work with actually taking a break. We cover how it is impossible to run on maximum capacity at all times and how it is a necessity to build in recovery time to our busy lives.

24 Apr 2023178. Discipline, Fostering Resilience, and Finding Your Confidence as a Parent with Dr. Aliza Pressman00:55:08

We are honored to have Dr. Aliza Pressman back on the show today. She was a guest on episode #41 and also hosts her own podcast; Raising Good Humans, where she interviews very knowledgeable and renowned parenting experts.

What we love about Dr. Aliza is that she parents the parent. She brings the latest research in child development and helps parents with the things that we deal with every, single day. Throughout this episode we bring in our own experiences and sift through ways to not only make parenting easier but also more enjoyable.

Dr. Aliza shares the through line that all her guests agree on and you might be surprised to hear that it’s actually way simpler than you might think. We cover how we can keep our information intake at a manageable level when we live in a world where we are bombarded with information overload. We talk about resilience and how we can help our kiddos self regulate, how we prevent passing on our own worries, and whether or not that should even be the goal.

As always, we appreciate all the tags, ratings, and reviews. We are trying to grow our download numbers and every share helps us do just that. Thanks for listening.

This interview feels like a big hug. We sit down with Meghan Watson, a psychotherapist, writer, consultant & content creator, to talk about understanding emotions and giving ourselves compassion.

We cover the steps of what building emotional awareness looks like, the topic of resentment - how it can be an emotional burden, and Meghan gives us prompts on how we can move past resentment even if we feel like the other player isn’t willing to make a change. We dive into how we can start to build self-trust and the role that social media plays on our ability to trust ourselves.

In today’s episode we cover everything from anxiety to depression to what this looks like inside motherhood and how we can keep ourselves mentally well. This month is mental health awareness month and as you guys know we think this is so important.

Lauren and Megan provide us with strategies on how we can cope with mental health challenges, explain how we can start to accept help for those of us who struggle in this area, and share their top wellness tips that they recommend every mom does.

12 Jun 2023185. Peaceful Parenting: Getting on the Same Team as Your Child with @destini.ann00:34:44

Destini Ann Davis is our guest today. She is a parenting coach, a working mom, and the author of Very Intentional Parenting: How to Raise Empowered Kids. She approaches parenting in a peaceful manner. Today, she talks with us about what this means and explains it in a way that we are all on the same team and we’re all trying to figure things out together.

Destini focuses on the energy that we can bring to parenting to really help everyone be more positive and peaceful and in return, we can raise children who are the same. She answers our questions on whether or not peaceful parents are raising entitled children, what to do when our approach to parenting differs from our partner, and how to use reflection and intention setting in parenting.

The continuing message throughout our conversation is centered around encouraging the parent and child to connect and communicate. If this episode resonated with you, we would love for you to share it on your Instagram stories and tag both @herselfpodcast and @destini.ann.

19 Jun 2023186. Liz Fosslien Normalizing the Full Range of Emotions in Motherhood00:39:39

Oftentimes as parents we focus so much on our kid’s emotions that we forget to give ourselves grace in this area. Today’s guest, Liz Fosslien is an emotions expert, an illustrator, and best-selling author of two books; No Hard Feelings and Big Feelings.

Liz explains why it is so hard for us as adults to focus on our own emotional needs. She also talks about why demonstrating our emotions to our children is so important and why editing them all out isn’t a good idea. Liz touches on the touchy subject of regret and explains why it isn’t always a bad thing.

Amy and I couldn’t help but feel the whole range of human emotions when we did this interview with Liz because not only does she allow that, she expects it. As women we often shove down emotions like anger or frustration when in reality those feelings should be invited. Having our kids see us work through those emotions is in fact very healthy!

26 Jun 2023187. Dr. Traci Baxley on How to Raise Compassionate, Anti-Racist, Justice-Minded, Kids00:41:23

Are your kids starting to ask the really difficult questions especially when it comes to race? Then today’s episode is going to be a great one for you to learn from. Our guest, Dr. Traci Baxley is a cultural and race identity coach and she supports families in creating a safe place to have these types of conversations.

Dr. Traci approaches all of the subjects we cover in a non-judgmental way. She explains how being an educator in the classroom for years and being a parent of five children has led her to the work she does with social justice parenting. Dr. Traci describes why shielding our children from the ugliness of the world makes it more difficult for them to empathize with the struggles other people are going through. She goes into details on why she coaches parents to acknowledge race and shares tangible examples of age appropriate ways we can talk about these things with both our school aged children and younger kiddos as well.

Have you ever been in a situation where your child has asked a question right in front of another person? Dr. Traci walks us through what to do when this happens and explains how to go about handling that other person’s reaction as well.

We know that today’s episode is going to help you grow both as a person and as a parent. We would love it if you shared this episode with a friend who you know would enjoy it as well. As always, thanks for being here.

17 Jul 2023190. Dr. Morgan Cutlip on How to Love Your Kids Without Losing Yourself00:44:53

Dr. Morgan Cutlip is back on the show today. She first joined us for episode 162. Today we are focusing on how we take care of ourselves as mothers; how do we feel good inside motherhood? So many of her answers spoke directly to both of us.

In her upcoming book, Love Your Kids Without Losing Yourself, Dr. Morgan explains three core concepts moms face. She chats with us about these concepts including what we can do to help ourselves with the conflict of sacrificing our own identities in motherhood. We also discuss the core concept of idealization of motherhood and how intense our standards are on ourselves as parents.

Ever feel like your needs aren’t being met by your partner when it comes to sharing the load? Do you ask them for help but it never seems to go anywhere? Dr. Morgan shares actionable steps we can take when our own needs are not being met. She talks about how we can best manage all of our commitments and why that means we can’t be 100 percent committed to everything at once.

24 Jul 2023191. The Episode Every Woman Needs: Let's Talk About Your Sleep with Dr. Shelby Harris00:47:36

We hear it so often when we are about to become mother’s for the first time, “Oh, you’re not going to get any sleep!” But the problem is there’s not a plan in place for how the mom’s sleep is actually going to happen. And we think this is something that needs to be talked about more!

Today we have Dr. Shelby Harris on the show. She is a mom, a clinical psychologist, and is board certified in behavioral sleep medicine by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. We are absolutely obsessed with this interview! We go off script so many times, in a good way, because we ask all the follow-up questions that all of us have.

Dr. Shelby answers our questions around whether or not women really do need more sleep than men, how to enhance the quality of sleep when more sleep is just simply too hard to come by, and how caffeine really affects our sleep.

Do you ever wonder if naps are good for you?  What about the term “revenge bedtime” that we are seeing all over the internet? Should we be taking sleep aids? And what to do on those nights that you just can’t fall asleep, no matter what. Dr. Shelby answers those questions and so many more!

31 Jul 2023192. Dr. Emily Jamea on Keeping Sex and Intimacy Alive After Children00:43:12

We are thrilled to have Dr. Emily Jamea on the podcast today. She sits down with us to talk all things sex and intimacy! Emily is a sex therapist who is also the mom of two. She also has a book coming out next year and hosts her own podcast: Love & Libido. It was important for us to talk to someone about this topic who was a mom because we know Emily truly understands the ebbs and flows that come with intimacy in parenthood.

Sex is often the first thing that gets dropped by couples when life feels so full or gets super stressful. Dr. Emily coaches us on how we can make sex a priority if it has been put on the back burner. Or maybe sex feels like it’s too far gone? She walks us through how to even bring it up in conversation when it can feel too awkward.

There are a lot of things that can be mismatched between partners when it comes to sex; frequency, time of day, fantasies, etc. It can be hard to even get started when you are feeling so misaligned. Dr. Emily shares her evidence based facts on how you too, as a couple, can have great sex! Even after having kids!

07 Aug 2023193. Melinda Moyer on the Research Behind Raising Kind, Generous, Grateful Children00:39:46

This conversation is chock-full of great information that we are so glad we get to insert into our own lives right away! Melinda Moyer, author of How to Raise Kids Who Aren’t Assholes, is our guest today. She is also the mom of two, contributing editor to Scientific American Magazine, weekly contributor to The New York Times and a faculty member in the science, health, and environmental reporting program at NYU.

We sometimes tend to think that talking about emotions too much with our kids may lead to them not being able to stand up for themselves or might make them too sensitive. Melinda explains why this is not true and how research has shown that strong soft skills, like emotional awareness, directly improve hard skills.

As a parent, we’ve all witnessed the dreaded scenario when our own kid treats someone else in a way that we are not proud of. Melinda coaches us through what to do in this scenario and how we can move forward from that. She also explains that saying sorry might not be the best solution, and what to foster instead.

We know so many of you are on the same page as us - you want to raise kind humans. In today’s conversation we take a deep dive into how to do just that. We hope you enjoy!

14 Aug 2023194. The Back to School Episode00:44:10

It’s almost back to school time! Since we both have soon to be second graders, almost kindergarteners, and younger kiddos, we thought we would do an episode all about this big transition! This time around we feel a little more experienced and open up to you about how the process of sending our littles off to school has gone for us.

In this episode, we start off by sharing our thoughts on the end of the summer pressure we put on ourselves as moms. We might feel like we haven’t done enough. But ask your kids what their favorite memory from this summer was. We think you might be surprised to hear that in their eyes, the little things are what matter most.

We share what caught us off guard as first time parents of kindergarteners. We touch on how with school comes a whole new bag of unexpected responsibilities for not only your child but for you as the parent as well. If you’re part of a household that has two, full-time working parents, juggling this new school year schedule definitely comes with its challenges. We share how we’ve had to build a bigger village than just our own couplehoods in order to get the help that we need.

With big transitions come big emotions. We want you to know that every feeling is valid. You and your little one have everything you need, you’re going to get through this, and don’t forget to have a little fun along the way!

21 Aug 2023195. The Secrets to Long-Term Partnership with Dr. John Van Epp01:00:16

It always feels good to get advice from those who are two steps ahead of us in life. And that’s exactly what today’s episode is. We have the pleasure of interviewing Dr. John Van Epp, developer of evidence based relationship programs. He also has his PhD in counseling and psychology. Dr. John Van Epp has over 44 years of marriage experience himself and has raised two daughters who are also in healthy marriages. You might even recognize one of his daughters; Dr. Morgan Cutlip, who has been on the show twice before!

Have you ever been at a point in your relationship where it feels more challenging than other times? Dr. John Van Epp explains that this is completely normal. He gives us evidence based examples of when relationships tend to struggle the most and walks us through how to get through those tough times. For many couples, the same argument keeps coming up time and time again. Dr. John Van Epp talks to us about the importance of not making it a you versus me thing but rather to dig deeper by trying to act like the other person’s defense attorney in order to come up with a resolution.

We loved our conversation with Dr. John Van Epp because it felt like he was giving us the wise advice that we all need. He is at a much different stage in life than most of us and it was refreshing to hear his take on things. If you loved this episode we would love it if you left us a rating and/or review wherever you listen to podcasts.

28 Aug 2023196. Getting Your Needs Met00:35:33

The whole idea of this episode is that, as women, we have to ask for what we need. And this takes practice. We were raised by a generation of women who did not speak up when it came to getting their needs met which is leading us to a lot of resentment and burnout. But today we talk through a few situations that have happened in our lives recently where we have stood up and asked for what we need.

We cover what getting our needs met from our partners looks like. We think they can read our minds and this just isn’t true. If you are feeling resentful towards your partner, you have an unmet need. We both share some things that work for us with Drew and Colin and hope they might help you as well.

The other two areas we cover are work and kids. You have to set boundaries with both. Whether you work inside or outside of the home, setting boundaries around these areas of your life will help you get what you need. We’ve recently implemented some changes with the role our kids play inside of our homes that will hopefully help aid them in becoming a more collaborative part of the family unit.

With all the things we cover in today’s episode, make sure you do what feels right for you. But also, in the moment, when something doesn’t feel right, speak up. We’re sensing a shift for our generation. We are starting to get our needs met. We are starting to ask for what we need. And that is a really great thing!

04 Sep 2023197. Greatest Hits: Nedra Tawwab on Reclaiming Yourself Through Setting Boundaries00:45:27

If you’re like us, we are celebrating Labor Day today! We are at the cabin, our kids are going back to school, and we’re getting together with friends. With everything we have going on we thought we would bring back one of our most listened to episodes with Nedra Tawwab all on boundaries.

Nedra does such a good job of explaining boundaries, the need for them, and how to implement them into your life. Every time we listen to this episode we find ourselves saying “no” so much more often because it makes our “yeses” feel that much better!

We read Nedra Tawwab’s book “Set Boundaries, Find Peace: A Guide to Reclaiming Yourself” as a group in our Patreon Book Club and in this episode, we dive into the details of her book and boundaries in general. We have answers to the family member who gives you the guilt trip, the friend who keeps testing the limits, and also with finding the power within yourself to make the changes with boundaries needed in the first place.

11 Sep 2023198. Dr. Tracy D on Reconnecting With Your Partner00:46:40

It is a well known fact that ⅔ of couples report decreases in their marital satisfaction in the first three years after having a child. Dr. Tracy Dalgleish is back on the show with us today to talk about what happens after those first three years. How do we reconnect with our partner?

Dr. Tracy is a mom to two kids, a wife, and has over 15 years of practice as a clinical psychologist. She gives us advice on how we can find the passion in our relationship again when we are in the thick of raising littles. And it doesn’t have to be these big extravagant date nights. It’s more about the little things like a text in the middle of the day to let your partner know that you’re thinking about them.

Do you feel like your relationship with your partner is transactional? Or when you do get a chance to sneak in a date night - do you only talk about your kids? Dr. Tracy explains how we can go from the mundane conversation of, “how was your day” to the four “C’s”; curiosity, compassion, connection, and collaboration.

What we love about Dr. Tracy is that she shares her own, personal experiences with us as well. Which is one of the touch points in her upcoming book; I Didn’t Sign Up For This. In her book Dr. Tracy writes about the importance of sharing the stories of other couples, and her own, to help her clients relate and feel less alone.

18 Sep 2023199. Katie Taylor on Having Hard Conversations with Our Kids00:40:54

We are discussing a topic we’ve never really talked about before. And that is how to have the really hard conversations with our kids. In this episode we cover topics like death, funerals, losing a pet, and what to do when our child has completely lost it at an appointment.

Our guest, Katie Taylor, is a certified child life specialist with over 12 years of experience. She supports kids and their families as they navigate challenging life events. Today, Katie explains to us that having  hard talks with our kiddos is a learned skill and why it is one that is so important to develop.

In this conversation Katie gives us her tips on whether or not we should tell our kids the truth about what to expect in an upcoming appointment. She also walks us through what age appropriate conversations around the death of a pet or a close family member sound like and gives suggestions on the appropriate language to use to help explain these events to our kids. We both took so much away from our chat with Katie and know you will too!

25 Sep 2023200. Whitney Casares on How To Stop Doing it All and Start Doing What Matters00:56:26

We are excited to have Dr. Whitney Casares back on the show today. She was first on the show back in episode 87; HERself Expert: Dr. Whitney Casares Talks Working Motherhood and Silencing Your Inner Critic. Dr. Whitney is a maternal child health expert, a pediatrician, a mom of two; one child has ADHD and the other has autism. She’s also the author of the soon-to-be released book - Doing It All.

Today we are talking about how we can make working motherhood better for ourselves. Dr. Whitney explains how when she was doing it all, in the end, she was the one who was suffering the most. She shares her hot take on the word balance and offers a suggestion on what we could be seeking instead.

We cover everything from how to advocate for yourself and others in incremental ways at the workplace, what the term sandwich generation means, and what you can do if you fall into this category. Dr. Whitney shares how her and her husband split the household and parenting load & you’ll find her honest, personal answer refreshing.

In Dr. Whitney’s upcoming book, Doing It All, she talks about the centered life. In this episode she walks us through this concept, gives her own personal examples, and shares what you can do when your top priorities conflict with one another.

We appreciate Dr. Whitney’s honest, realistic approach to working motherhood. We all want you to know that you deserve to feel good in this role and that even if you feel like you don’t have five minutes to reflect on your own needs, doing so will have a foundational impact on the rest of your life.

02 Oct 2023201. Julie Menanno Dives Deep into Attachment Theory and Creating a Secure Relationship00:52:20

Our conversation with Julie Menanno, therapist and mom of six, centers around secure and insecure relationships based on attachment styles. She educates us on what attachment theory is and what the different types of attachment styles are. Julie breaks down what happens when a couple has an argument and how to help get you back to the ultimate goal in any relationship: feeling safe.

Do you wonder what attachment style you and your partner are? Julie walks us through how we can tell and what it means if you don’t identify with one attachment style over the other. She talks about why avoidant and anxious partners are often attracted to each other. Julie also explains why different attachment styles react differently when their partner is disappointed in them.

To conclude our talk with Julie, she gives us an example of what we can start doing today to create a home that has an attachment friendly environment. Doing this type of work is hard but it’s fulfilling. Remember, it’s not linear but it will be worthwhile. If you want to be in your partnership for life, you must figure out how to sustain it and nurture it. When you get to go through something like this with someone you love, you come out the other side feeling like a rockstar!

16 Oct 2023203. Supporting Your Health Goals with Jessica Kuchnia00:37:03

Did you know that there are more tools to measure your health progress than just a scale? Today, Jessica Kuchnia, from DexaFit Madison is here to explain to us what a DEXA scan is and what all it measures. We first met Jess when we walked into her business for our own scans. We all share the same passion for all things health, fitness, nutrition, and longevity.

It can be so hard not to compare ourselves to other women. Especially in this social media era we are living in. Jess explains why it is important to focus on progress on ourselves and how focusing inward can be our best bet when it comes to living our healthiest lives. We also know that progress can be slow. Especially as we age and after we have babies. Jess explains what can help with this and why playing the long game when it comes to your health is best.

One of our favorite pieces of advice that Jess shares is to beware of the “BLTs” of life - and they aren’t what you think they are!

Do you lack confidence from time to time? Let us introduce you to Lydia Fenet. She is the world’s leading charity auctioneer and has single handedly raised over one billion dollars for over 800 different organizations and broken down countless barriers for women in our industry. In this episode Lydia teaches us how to step into our own confidence by focusing on the present.

As moms we are forced to make so many decisions and with all of the options we have, we can struggle with the choices we make. Lydia explains how things influence us, both in positive and negative ways, and how we can start to tune out the outside world and trust our own instincts. She shares what the “strike method” is and how we can start using it today. Lydia also states that she has learned way more from her failures than her successes and how this has made an important impact on the lives of her three children as well.

A lot of women in this community struggle with working mom guilt. Many of you have thought about leaving your careers completely because the stress of managing a household and kids gets to be too much. Lydia has some words of wisdom for you if you are stuck in this mindset right now. She also stresses the importance of understanding money, whether or not you’re the one bringing it in for your household.

Did you know that your physical space can help you with your mental health journey? Today we are speaking with Anita Yokota, former mental health therapist turned interior designer. Anita shares her story of how practicing as a marriage and family therapist for over 20 years before pivoting her career into interior design allowed her to realize the importance of how your space feels. She is also the author of the best selling book Home Therapy.

Do you feel insecure about your home? Are you nervous to do any improvements because you’re afraid you might ruin it? Or you want to do all the things because you're hosting this upcoming holiday season? Anita teaches you how to be somewhere in the middle. She also explains what the four domains are from her book and how we should be using them to find more peace and joy in our homes.

Anita walks us through how we can feel good in our homes during the little kid years without breaking the budget. She recommends things like changing the paint color in a room to help a space feel more calm and less chaotic. She also touches on how you can compromise if you share a space with someone who has a different vision than yours when it comes to decorating.

06 Nov 2023206. Jamie Scrimgeour - An Episode for Step Moms and Those Who Support Them00:41:52

This episode is all about step families, blended families and how to deal with exes. Even if that’s not your current situation, opening your eyes to the challenges that stepparents face is really important. And that’s exactly what today’s guest, Jamie Scrimgeor, helps us do.

Jamie has a background in psychology and social service work. She is now a certified life coach who specializes in step family dynamics. Jamie also hosts her own podcast, is a content and community creator, she’s a wife, a mom to three stepchildren and one of her own.

In our conversation with Jamie she shares what she would like those of us who aren’t stepmoms to understand about those who are. She also shares what the most common challenges are that come up for stepmoms. We know that blending a family with stepchildren and an “ours” baby can bring up a lot of emotion. Jamie shares her own personal story with this and why it’s the best thing that has happened to her family.

One topic that isn’t often talked about is the mental load of a stepmom. Jamie shares her insights on what contributes to stepmom mental load most often and also shares her reframes to help you release the guilt, shame, and judgment of others when it comes to divorce.

13 Nov 2023207. Stressed About the Holidays? Listen to This!00:49:54

Many of us are craving our own holiday traditions yet we are trying to please our parents at the same time. When is it our turn to enjoy the holidays? We can’t be expending all our energy into others and expect there to be time to dedicate to our own families. Today we hope you leave this episode feeling inspired, with some new strategies to try this holiday season, and definitely with some solidarity.

We understand that juggling the holidays is complicated. It’s so easy to say, “set a boundary. Say no.” But when other people’s feelings are at risk, it’s just simply not that easy. We share where we draw the line and say no. Being flexible when you can is key but also know what you’re going to hold near and dear to your immediate family.

We reached out to our community and asked you what was the most stressful for you during the holidays. We go through your hot takes on topics such as gifts, kids being crabby, sleeping arrangements, perfectionism, and the mom’s mental load this time of year.

To make this holiday season a little bit more about you and less about everyone else you might have to have that hard conversation with your loved one or your in-laws. If anything, we suggest making your partner take some things off your plate! Keep it simple, delegate, and get ahead of what you can.

20 Nov 2023208. Erin & Stephen on The Hardest Decisions Couples Make (Adding Another Baby, Conflict, and Self-Awareness)01:18:14

We are sharing the microphone with a married couple who also happen to be couples counselors specifically for parents. Erin and Stephen Mitchell join us today to talk about the tough decisions we have to make as parents, starting with do we want to have more kids? They go into their own story on this very subject and share the struggles they had to overcome to come to a final decision. Not only do they bring the humanity behind therapy, but also with Stephen’s PhD in medical family therapy and Erin’s masters in counseling and psychology, they’re able to bring in so much more.

We know that the decision of how many children to have shows up constantly for this community. Some couples can fight on this topic for months and months, some even years. Erin and Stephen share what you should be asking yourselves, as individuals, if this is a topic of tension in your household. And what about if you’re grid locked - one person is a no and the other is a yes. They share how you can move forward in this situation.

Finances are another topic of discussion that cause stress for couples. Do you feel like you can never get on the same page as your partner when it comes to money? And what about a career change? How do you decide as a couple if this is the next right move for your family? Erin and Stephen bring forth the idea of asking what the truth behind the story we are telling ourselves is with these issues. They also share how to help your partner feel seen and heard when their opinion differs from your own.

We both had so much to reflect on after this conversation. Erin and Stephen still have issues, even though they are experts in this area. We all have things that we can continue to work on inside our relationships. And, when we throw kids in the mix, it only elevates the demands and responsibilities we feel when making tough decisions. We hope this episode allows you and your partner to revisit some of the stories underneath the surface and that together, as a couple, you can understand each other just a little bit better and decision fatigue can be less of a burden.

We have Dr. Sumi Raghavan on the show today. If you’ve heard of Dr. Becky Kennedy, who has been on the show before, Dr. Sumi consults for her parenting company. She also collaborates with other psychologists who support women and mothers.

Throughout this interview Dr. Sumi does such a great job of empowering our listeners to feel confident and break free from mom guilt. She lets us know that if a system isn’t working for us, it’s not our fault. Instead, she gives us techniques we can use to move forward through community and finding support from the people around us.

Dr. Sumi answers our questions on how we can create more space for rest and how we can help ourselves understand that rest is necessary. We live in a culture that loves to value being over-productive. Dr. Sumi explains how we can move away from this lifestyle. 04 Dec 2023210. Real Talk: Money and Personal Finance with Jamila Souffrant00:50:31

Jamila Souffrant, from Journey to Launch, is on the podcast today. We’ve had financial experts on the show before and we know these types of episodes always hit! But we feel that you’ll especially vibe with Jamila. She is a mom of three, a money coach, a podcast host, and a certified financial education instructor. Her own journey with money and how she too is learning along the way is so relatable.

There are different ways to approach your finances. Jamila explains that during different stages of life you may approach money differently. You could be an aggressive investor at one point versus extremely frugal at another. She explains things like what the FIRE acronym stands for and what her “guacamole lifestyles” mean in her new book; Your Journey to Financial Freedom.

We know that finances can feel like an all or nothing approach. Jamila gives a fresh take on how you can look at a side hustle and how to get on the same page as your partner when it comes to still valuing each other's independent financial goals. Another thing our generation tends to think is that our parents didn’t teach us enough about money. If you want to start having money talks with your children, Jamila gives some advice on where to start.

We loved so many of Jamila’s answers during this interview. You’ll be able to take her real life examples, implement them right away, and not feel overwhelmed while doing so.

11 Dec 2023211. What It's Like Having a Traveling Spouse00:51:40

This is a special episode that was originally recorded for the other podcast that Amy & I host; Pursuing HER Purpose. I (Abby) get behind the microphone with our other co-found of that business, Kat Herro, and together we share what it’s like to have a traveling spouse. May you are the traveling one or may it’s your partner, either way this episode is going to fill you with so much insight into what this lifestyle is all about.

We go through how often Kat and I’s partners are gone, what they do ahead of time to set the family up for success, and what the expectations are for both themselves and their partners when they are gone. Kat and Abby share what systems work best for them when their spouses are out of town including having something fun planned in advance, having groceries delivered, and even making bath time a longer than usual activity with the kids.

Having a partner who travels for work can be taxing in more ways than one. But we want you to know that you’re not alone. It’s easy to slip into that angsty comparison place. We hope this episode not only gives you ideas for how to make the time your partner is away easier but also something that you can actually look forward to.

18 Dec 2023212. What to Do When Your Partner is in a Bad Mood00:38:12

Today’s topic idea came from a friend of ours. She explained that her partner is going through a rough stretch at work and it’s trickling into their home life. She was wondering how she can help him and how she can make sure this issue is not taken out on their kids. We decided to dedicate an entire episode to what happens if one of the two of you has a tough stretch of life.

We give real life examples from both ourselves and our partners. Both of us have been there. We know what it’s like to go through tough seasons as individuals and what it’s like to have a partner go through a rough patch. We help break it down into three parts; finding the root cause, pulling the other person out of their rut, and how to stop their bad mood from bringing you down.

A common theme that comes up throughout this episode is the importance of self-awareness. We get it that it’s not your responsibility to make sure your partner is happy all the time. It is up to them to recognize what their triggers are and to communicate with you what will help them during this tough time. And the way to help your partner out in times of need is going to be different for everyone.

You and your partner are two different people. When they are going through a rough patch it’s just not easy. We have to normalize that as humans we are going to go through hard things. It’s important to ask ourselves how can we help each other, how can we best support each other, and be there for one another? How can we take some things off their plate while also knowing that we exist outside of them too?

25 Dec 2023213. Greatest Hits: HERself Expert: Kristin Neff on Self Compassion and Calming Your Mean Inner Critic00:42:53

We want to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas to those who celebrate. As we head into the New Year, this Greatest Hits episode with Kristin Neff is such an important one. That mean inner critic that we all have can speak really loudly at times. Sometimes we even start to believe that voice. During this episode Kristin encourages us to think past that mean voice and instead to think about what we are truly saying.

We all know we should speak to ourselves kindly. But when we make a mistake, say the wrong thing, our kids are acting up, it’s easy to place blame and judgment on ourselves. Kristin is a pioneer in the self compassion space and has a wealth of knowledge on the “in the moment” things we can do to raise ourselves up and show kindness over anything else.
