14 Nov 2017 | Wild Cherry Monograph by jim mcdonald | 21 | 00:22:24
On today's episode I narrate jim mcdonald's wild cherry monograph. Here's a sampling from his monograph which you can find here: www.herbrally.com/monographs/wild-cherry
When considering wild cherry, most will immediately think of its use in the address of coughs and colds; indeed, such a staple it was that when plant medicine was being replaced by chemical drugs "wild cherry" was retained as the flavor of cough syrups and drops, because, well... that's just what those things were supposed to taste like. The actual bark, though, does much more than provide flavor. Wild cherry is a respiratory relaxant/antispasmodic and, in varying degrees, an astringent tonic. A cooling sedative to lung tissue, it excels when heat and irritability undermine healthy expectoration. Now, here's where I want to paint a little word picture that really sums up wild cherry's respiratory sphere of influence perfectly; that's really what all herb writers want to do when we write these things. But, darnit, Michael Moore did it so well I can't resist quoting him: "Chokecherry or wild cherry bark is a simple sedative for cardiopulmonary excitability. If your child is lying in bed, glowing a dull infrared and breathing rapidly with a dry cough, give him/her chokecherry. That hot, vibratile pulse of blood through the lungs can be counterproductive, not nourishing the membranes as well as needed and maybe even slowing the defensive responses to a viral infection. The hectic breathing can dry out mucous membranes and harden secretions, making them little more than dried blobs adhering to the bronchial membranes---difficult enough for an adult to expectorate, very difficult for a respiratory-impatient child to handle." Yeah, Moore was awesome.

21 Sep 2023 | LESSON 2: The Holistic Intake Roadmap | 00:01:30
Sajah Popham and the School of Evolutionary Herbalism just dropped lesson 2 in their free Vitalist Herbalism Mini-course! It's an an hour and thirteen minutes and is jam-packed with all sorts of tidbits for the herbalist, especially if you're looking into seeing clients. Sajah teaches us his three frameworks for how he does a holistic client intake and interview. This includes: The 5 layers of communication that you need to have when talking to clients The 5 internal states you must have yourself (comes with a PDF as well) Learn what the acronym OPQRST stands for. *hint, this was a huge turning point for Sajah's own client intakes (also a part that I found really fascinating). Sajah is a wonderful teacher, I've had the pleasure of taking classes with him at various conferences over the years and always come away inspired! If you're considering taking on clients as an herbalist, lesson 2 is a must! Also, if you missed lesson 1, "Allopathic vs. Vitalist Herbalism" CLICK HERE. These lessons are only available for a limited time! Lesson 3 will be released next week :) Enjoy, Mason

19 Sep 2017 | Demystifying Herb-Drug Interactions with Erika Galentin | Episode 10 | 01:22:02
Today's episode we hear from Erika Galentin MNIMH, RH (AHG) of Sovereignty Herbs in Athens, Ohio speaking on Demystifying Herb-Drug Interactions. Many people get very frightened when they think about herbs and drugs interacting with each other. Some even may feel defensive about the idea that pharmaceutical medicine so easily puts herbs in the hot-seat. In this episode you will be introduced to the means by which herbs and drugs may interact with each other, for better or for worse. You will also learn skills for easier interpretation of scientific research behind these interactions. Also, just a heads up, this episode does contain a bit of colorful language. It's nothing too crazy, though. You've been forewarned! If you'd like to obtain Erika's slide for her presentation you can contact her directly at office@sovereigntyherbs.com. I had the pleasure of attending this class at the 2017 Chesapeake Herb Gathering. I recorded it on my phone so the audio quality isn't 100%. That said, it was such an amazing class packed full of important info Erika and I were both really excited to share it with the community. If you're on the east coast and looking for a great annual herbal event you gots to check this one out! Molly Meehan of Centro Ashé and her team throw a heck of a gathering. Show Erika and Sovereignty Herbs some love on the socials! Erika's clinical education, experience, and knowledge are based in both science and tradition. Much of her herbal and clinical rationale is derived from the past and present Physiomedical philosophy, with utmost faith placed upon vix medicatrix naturae, or the healing power of nature. She sees the human body as possessing a vital integrity and intelligence with inherent integrative, reconstructive, and resistive, tendencies. She does not see it as a broken-down machine, lacking the savvy for self-repair; given the right set of circumstances, the right nutriment and encouragement, the human body, your body, is capable of amazing things. 17 Jan 2018 | 39 | How to Compose a Herbal Compound from Intake to Prescription with John Redden (Part 2) | 01:33:06
This class was recorded at the superb event: The Great Lakes Herb Faire. If you've not been and you're in the region, I encourage you to try and make it to the 2018 shindig. Here's the details: Great Lakes Herb Faire "We have had three amazing Faires so far and are so looking forward to doing this again! The feedback we received from people who attended was overwhelmingly positive. People were excited to network and meet other herbalists in their communities, learn directly from teachers rather than relying on books, and walk the trails on the surrounding land meeting the herbs in person. There were many kids attending and we heard from parents and the kids themselves that they couldn’t wait to come back next year! There was amazing energy from everyone, the food was delicious and the marketplace was loaded with fantastic herbal creations." -Anna Fernandez I had the great fortune of attending the 2017 Faire (as a representative for Mountain Rose Herbs) and I concur on all of that. And yes, the food was phenomenal! If interested in purchasing recordings from the 2016 and 2017 Faires (for a great price) you can do so here>> RECORDINGS Here's the description for the class from the website: We will create a template that methodically takes the practitioner through the steps of a clinical visit. First we collect the information from the intake form and with the patient generate a plan to get to our therapeutic goals. We describe what is required to go from our beginning point (now) to our end point (therapeutic goal). The descriptions become action categories within body systems. We select herbs using a set of rules or selection criteria from lists (provided) and write them down. From the many herbs listed we will then organize and de-select by simple rules. Once pared down we check our formula to see that it will bring the patient to their desired goal. We do a little math and we have a prescription for health. A huge thanks to Anna and John for sharing the class! John Redden is a Western Medical Herbalist with an eclectic background. He has over thirty years experience growing and wild crafting herbs, manufacturing remedies and clinical practice. As a member and former vice-president of the Ontario Herbalists Association, he co-founded “A Celebration of Herbs”, Toronto’s largest herbal event. For six years, John served as the editor of the Canadian Journal of Herbalism, the national herbal medical journal for professional herbalists and interested lay enthusiasts. He is a hands-on teacher of numerous aspects of holistic herbal medicine and teaches popular and advanced classes in his workshop / laboratory and at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine. John is a member of the professional advisory board for the Ontario Ginseng Growers Association and a founding author of the Canadian General Standards Board on Organic Agriculture co-authoring Canada’s laws on organic farming and manufacturing. 01 Dec 2021 | COURSE: The Art of Frugal Nutrition | 00:03:53
The Art of Frugal Nutrition Are you looking to feed you and your family nourishing food without spending a lot of money? That’s our mission with the Art of Frugal Nutrition. This concept has been a dream of mine to create for years now, and it’s finally here! Well, truthfully, I always thought it’d be a book. But in these modern times, courses are a lot more valuable because of the ability to follow along with the instructional videos. The other thing is, I wanted to learn from the experts themselves. While I have studied nutrition a lot over the years, and I’ve experimented plenty in the kitchen, the teachers we’re working with on this course are the true experts! The Art of Frugal Nutrition is: SLIDING SCALE | It seemed antithetical for us to create a course based around eating on a budget and have it not be accessible to the people who need it the most. Thus there are discount codes for 50%, 75%, and 100% off. That is correct, you can get this course for free. If you do register for free, and you feel moved to you can always contribute to this project financially at a later date. We appreciate you no matter what! FULL PRICE IS $100 AN EVER-EXPANDING COURSE | You’ll notice there are currently three modules available. That’s fermentation, dumpster diving and bone broth. The beauty of this course is that it will always grow, meaning new modules will be added periodically. We already have three more in the pipeline. This probably goes without saying, but once you register for the course, you’ll have access to all of the modules, including the new ones. A FUNDRAISER | 10% of the profits from sales of this course will be donated to World Central Kitchen, a non-profit whose mission is to use the power of food to nourish communities and strengthen economies in times of crisis and beyond. A COMMUNITY | When you register, you’ll gain access to a private Facebook group dedicated to sharing and learning frugal nutrition concepts, recipes, ideas, and more. This group is brand new, so it’s probably just me and a couple others in there! I know Facebook isn’t everyone’s jam, so we’re looking into alternatives for creating a community space elsewhere, but this is what we got for now.
25 Feb 2022 | Preface | The Botanical Green Book with Derek Haynes | 00:06:16
Derek Haynes AKA The Chocolate Botanist introduces us to his new project, “The Botanical Green Book”. In the year 1936, Victor Hugo Green wrote the first volume of “The Negro Traveler’s Green Book” which helped African-American travelers in the US find safe, and legal, places to stay, eat and safely travel. This new monthly video series with Derek is inspired by the Green Book, and he’s going to take us around the plant community introducing us to black botanists, horticulturists, herbalists and plant people. Can you infer functional qualities from these terms, and safety significance? Heather Irvine, an herbalist and educator developed a way of teaching phytochemistry concepts to herbalists and health professionals, in herb schools, at professional conferences, and specifically for pharmacy students. Setting up a clinical practice is daunting and requires direction, support, and confidence. When first starting out in clinical practice, there are many factors to consider; from herbalism and the law, overheads, clinical skills, forms, and policies, to preparing your own extracts, formulating for clients, and managing your dispensary. Join Erika Galentin MNIMH, RH (AHG) and Brooke Sackenheim of Sovereignty Herbs for an exploration of the many facets of modern clinical herbal practice and details that you might want to consider in setting up your own herbal clinic including: Why having good clinical forms is the cornerstone of a solid clinical practice and what types of forms you should have ready to go. The importance of considering 'the business' of clinical practice including consultation options and setting fees, professional and liability insurance, the free clinical model, and accounting. Professional practicalities and ethical considerations including Scope of Practice, Herbalism & the law, Privacy and Confidentiality, & Non-discrimination policies. Marketing considerations including being familiar with what you can and cannot say in print, on your website, to the media, and on social media and how this helps to build a trustworthy brand. What you need to be thinking about in regards to getting herbs and supplements to your clients including managing a clean and compliant dispensary. Erika and Brooke also cover information about Sovereignty Herbs' new program, Spring into Herbal Practice: An Online Intensive for Landing the Leap from Student to Practitioner, as well as opportunities for formal mentorship with Erika Galentin.

27 Dec 2021 | COURSE: Plant Spirit Apprenticeship | 00:05:45
Plant Spirit Apprenticeship - Winter/Spring 2022 "A Council of the Forest Guardians"
The plants are calling out to us, to come to know them, to accept their friendship and unique medicine for our times. Will you come to apprentice to them? Will you sit and listen to them? Relationships with plant spirit are those that are held dear, and have taken significant amounts of time to develop and are rarely written about in-depth. People who do this work tend to be out of the spotlight, in remote places, in deep relationship with the land. You may be able to study with them, but they cannot reveal the deep secrets of the plant. You must study with the plant for them to be revealed to you. This is an experiential knowing, that is so far beyond our human vocabulary, it cannot be communicated properly to someone who hasn’t apprenticed with the plant themselves. It is a deep knowing of the energy and spirit of this plant being. Many plants demand your attention, intention and respect to reveal the deepest part of themselves and their relationships. They are really no different than we are right? We hold our deep knowings dear too. Revealed only to those we know and trust. There is an etiquette to working with plant spirit. Each plant is very different to work with and this work requires trusted guides. There will be several guides we work with in developing relationship. Why work with plant spirit? This is not the same as working with plant medicine, constituent medicine. Working with teas and tinctures for health is usually very far removed from working with plant spirit. You are using a plant, not working with a plant. When the plants know and trust you, they will do incredible things. One plant will help you to move through a place unnoticed, another helps you find your way home. One offers protection from certain difficult spirits, another plant reveals what is hidden. Plants that can open up our senses and psyche, while we are in relationship with them, can do incredible healing work. This relational work is not about ingesting plants/trees, it requires something more of us.

05 Jan 2018 | 36 | Hawthorn Monograph with Heather Irvine | 00:47:31
On today's episode Heather Irvine teaches us all about the hawthorn tree. She wrote an excellent monograph on hawthorn, which you can find HERE. "Hawthorn is one of those country herbs whose leading quality one might at first describe as benevolent. It is much more powerful though! A great tree, low and broad in stature, it occurs wild in edge-lands of landscapes or occasionally planted for beauty, especially with respect to its generous white blossoms or deep red fruit in the fall and winter. It serves food and sanctuary to wildlife. Overzealous thorns protect birds and smaller critters from those larger ones which receive a memorable gauge and at best a pause to lick one’s wounds! In and around a Hawthorn’s understory, clumsy human types get so focused on the prize… zeroing in on more flowers or more berries, faster, receiving a poke followed by a clumsier startled retraction. Birds and squirrels laugh at us for sure!" - Heather Irvine Today’s episode is brought to you by the Herbal Academy. An excellent online herbalism school as well as resource. The mission of the Herbal Academy is to teach the art and science of herbalism and to honor our intrinsic connection to nature. The Herbal Academy is dedicated to teaching and promoting a lifestyle of wellness and vitality through the use of herbs, sound nutrition, and optimal health practices.
