10 Feb 2022Energetics of Aphrodisiacs Part 1 | Featuring jim mcdonald (Rerelease)01:01:17

We pulled this lecture from our Free Herbalism Project archive, just in time for Valentine’s Day! Listen along as jim mcdonald dives into aphrodisiacs, a popular and often problematic term. jim leans into his broad and inclusive definition of an aphrodisiac as “something that encourages greater sensation and presence and enjoyment of sexuality.” Looking at lists of plants deemed “aphrodisiacs,” we see everything from strong herbs (yohimbe) to culinary spices (ginger), from adaptogens (ashwangandha) to antispasmodics (kava). There are a lot of herbs that could be considered aphrodisiacs and as we’ll learn, what works for one person may not work for someone else. jim talks about what indications make certain herbs appropriate for certain people and offers engaging ideas to ponder with your loved ones.

The one and only, jim mcdonald is a community herbalist, a manic wildcrafter, a medicine maker, and has been an ardent student of the most learned teachers of herbcraft… the plants themselves. We hope you enjoy this episode on Herbal Radio.

Learn more about jim and his educational opportunities by visiting HerbCraft.org

This presentation was recorded live at the Free Herbalism Project in Eugene, OR on August 29, 2014.

08 Apr 2022Stinging Nettle & Poison Oak Plant Walk | Featuring Shana Lipner Grover00:25:52

This podcast is a combination of two separate talks from a pre-recorded plant walk led by Shana Lipner Grover at Mount Pisgah in Eugene, Oregon. A talented clinical herbalist, field botanist, and nutrition educator, Shana introduces us to two plants abundant throughout the Pacific Northwest, stinging nettle and poison oak.

Perhaps not outwardly considered allies as their touch can occasionally induce minor skin irritations, Shana explains how these plants can become our friends when properly identified and treated with respect. Engaging and informative, Shana reviews the botany, habitat, safety, and uses of nettle and poison oak and teaches us that by paying close attention to these plants we can be in relationship with them and learn from them.

Shana was a student of award-winning author Michael Moore and also one of Mountain Rose Herbs' favorite herbalists, Howie Brounstein. Today, she is the director and primary educator of Sage Country Herbs School of Botanical Studies in San Diego, CA.

You can learn more about Shana at Sage Country Herbs School and by visiting her on Instagram @sagecountryherbs.

17 May 2024Plant Stories | Featuring Howie Brounstein & Steven Yeager (Rerelease)00:58:57

Hello plant people! It's been a year and some change since we launched our Plant Stories series on Herbal Radio, and we thought what better time to reshare our first-ever episode in this series than during the sunny and blooming spring season! 🌷

Plant Stories is all about the heartfelt, fun, entertaining, educational, inspiring, and personal plant stories that stand out to our guests. Tune in to hear from esteemed herbalists, nature-based artists, and plant-lovers to learn about a specific plant, hear a touching tale, bask in a poem, or possibly dive into some folklore.

Our good friends, Howie Brounstein and Steven Yeager stopped by our podcast studio back in January 2023 to record the inaugural episode. Having taught together for decades at the Columbines School of Botanical Studies, Howie & Steven showcase their unique teaching style, philosophy, and humor as they banter about their personal and professional plant connections. Always entertaining, we hope you enjoy the many plant stories and botanical song beats brought to you by Howie & Steven.

Howie Brounstein has taught botany, herbalism, and wildcrafting extensively for nearly four decades, including at such herbal establishments as the Michael Moore’s Southwest School of Botanical Medicine. He is the co-owner and a primary instructor of the Columbines School of Botanical Studies and has a clinical practice in Eugene, Oregon. He is well known for his inspiring in-depth teaching style and his passionate love of plants.

Steven Yeager moved to the Pacific Northwest in 1994 and has been rooted in Eugene ever since. He has been an employee of Mountain Rose Herbs since 2007 and recently became the Vice President of Quality and Regulatory Affairs (formerly the Director of Quality and Regulatory Affairs, congratulations, Steven!). Steven Yeager has been exploring Oregon's wild places and studying the Pacific Northwest's native flora since 1995, botanizing, wildcrafting, and preparing herbal preparations for himself and his family. Steven is also an herbal educator and former co-owner of the Columbines School of Botanical Studies. His years of working in the plant world have contributed enormously to Steven's ability to direct quality control, laboratory operations, and regulatory compliance at Mountain Rose Herbs, where a thorough knowledge of plant identification, GMP and FSMA regulations, and herbalism is essential. He believes cultivating a relationship with plants and the natural world is vital for a healthy existence on this planet In 2011, Steven became an elected trustee of the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) and is currently participating with many of AHPA's committees. He also serves on the Board of the AHPA Foundation for Education and Research on Botanicals, United Plant Savers, and the Native Plant Society of Oregon. When not at work or volunteering with various non-profits Steven enjoys spending time with his family, cooking, hiking, camping, wildcrafting, and botanizing in the Cascade Mountains.

Visit the Columbines School of Botanical Studies website.

21 Jul 2022Aromatherapy: Blending Basics | Featuring Christine Rice01:08:57

This week’s Herbal Radio episode is recorded from a Sunday Annex Series class that was led earlier this month by our very own, in-house aromatherapist, Christine Rice. We are proud to present the Sunday Annex Series – a weekly educational class hosted by local herbalists, crafters, scientists, and more hosted at the Mountain Rose Herbs Annex in Eugene, Oregon. These weekly classes are part of our on-going efforts to provide accessible education to the herbal community.

In this podcast, you’ll explore scent descriptions and scent type grouping and find out how base, middle, and top aroma notes work together to create synergistic blends that can be personalized depending on your aromatic preference. Christine will even walk you through a blending exercise. While in-person participants created an aromatic roll-on to take home, you will be equipped to make your own roll-ons and essential oil blends at home.

For upcoming classes in Eugene, view the Sunday Annex Series event calendar here: https://mountainroseherbsmercantile.com/events-calendar/

Christine Rice is a Certified Aromatherapist and Director of Product Development & Management at Mountain Rose Herbs. 24 Mar 2023Plant Stories | Featuring Julia O. Bianco00:46:38

For this week’s Plant Stories podcast, we interview multi-disciplinary artist Julia O. Bianco. Julia was a Deep Ecology Artist Fellow at the United Plant Savers (UpS) Sanctuary, one of our favorite non-profit organizations focused on protecting native medicinal plants, fungi, and their ecosystems. Hear how an online foraging class, the artist in residency program at the UpS Sanctuary, and the plants Julia encountered in the Appalachian foothills, all helped to shape the course of her life and her creative inspiration. Julia closes the show by reading three of her nature-inspired poems.

Julia Orquera Bianco was born in Argentina and lived in Mexico before moving to the United States. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in Drawing and Painting from Universidad del Museo Social Argentino (Buenos Aires, Argentina) in 2012. In 2018 she graduated from the MFA program at Roski School of Art and Design, University of Southern California, Los Angeles. In 2020, Bianco earned a Certificate on Sustainability from University of California, Los Angeles.

Bianco works through interrogating constructs resulting from Modern Western Culture, collective memory, and the experience of migration and gender. This allows her to speak about an identity constantly being renegotiated and in motion, in deep relation and conversation with the environment. Her explorations use her family legacy of labor as a strategy to connect with worlds that she is foreign to, experiencing them while remembering. She currently teaches at University of Cincinnati, Ohio. Her work has been showcased in Argentina, Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, and the United States.

06 Dec 2024Buy Nothing Day Special Pt. 2 | Featuring Anne-Marie Bonneau of The Zero-Waste Chef00:34:31

This week on Everything You Didn’t Know About Herbalism, we are sharing the part two special episode in acknowledgment of the annual Buy Nothing Day movement with the award-winning author of The Zero-Waste Chef, Anne-Marie Bonneau. Join us as Anne-Marie and Thomas explore what motivated her plastic-free journey, the ever-growing planet’s plastic pollution problem, where most of our day-to-day trash comes from, practical tips for decreasing waste in the kitchen, and the importance of continuing the conversation surrounding the Buy Nothing Day movement.

As always, we thank you for joining us on another botanical adventure and are honored to have you tag along with us on this ride. Remember, we want to hear from you! Your questions, ideas, and who you want to hear from are invaluable to our podcast. Please send us an email at podcast@mountainroseherbs.com to let us know what solutions we should uncover next within the vast world of herbalism.

What is Buy Nothing Day you ask? Well, please allow us to explain!

Buy Nothing Day is our annually celebrated tradition in protest of Black Friday. In making this stand, we are joining tens of thousands of people across 65 nations for an international day of protest against mass consumerism and the throw-away culture that accompanies it. The Buy Nothing Movement has been growing since 1992 as overconsumption continues to consume our precious natural resources faster than we can replace them, putting our planet in real jeopardy.

If you visited our website last week, you likely noticed that our website was blacked out in protest of Black Friday. Although this “sale holiday” has since passed, it is crucial to continue the conversation surrounding the impacts mass consumerism has on our planet 365 days a year. We encourage our listeners to keep the buy nothing ball rolling by spreading acts of kindness, discovering new zero-waste kitchen tips from the Zero-Waste Chef Blog listening to your favorite podcast (bonus points if it’s this one!), or better yet, all of the above! The Buy Nothing Day movement is all about reaching for the meaning in our lives instead of stuff, and we thank you all for being part of the solution to reestablish a symbiotic relationship with our earth.

Learn more about Anne-Marie & Zero-Waste Chef below!

Anne-Marie Bonneau is an award-winning cookbook author, speaker, fermenter and sourdough baker who has lived a plastic-free lifestyle since 2011. Through social media, her blog and her book, The Zero-Waste Chef: Plant-Forward Recipes and Tips for a Sustainable Kitchen and Planet, Anne-Marie shows others how reducing their trash not only benefits the planet but also satisfies their taste buds, improves their well-being and boosts their bank accounts. This podcast episode comes from Dr. Christopher Hobbs’ presentation for the Fall 2022 Free Herbalism Project. This was a virtual event that took place over Zoom on October 14, 2022. Dr. Hobbs discusses why herbs and herbal medicine is fundamentally different than drugs.

Since the pandemic, the popularity of herbal medicine in households has continued to grow rapidly. Dr. Hobbs help us to look closely and practically at how herbal medicine can transform your health and wellness while helping to relieve symptoms and chronic ailments. His presentation also details why choosing herbal medicine as our first line of prevention and treatment in most ailments can not only benefit us—side benefits rather than side effects—while being completely sustainable and beneficial for our beautiful planet and all the inhabitants.

Dr. Christopher Hobbs occasionally references slides throughout his presentation. You can find his slides by watching the presentation on our YouTube channel.

SAVE THE DATE! We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Christopher Hobbs will be joining us in person at our upcoming Spring Free Herbalism Project on Sunday, May 7, 2023. 28 Apr 2022How to Make Botanical Incense | Featuring Jiling Lin00:39:21

This week’s Herbal Radio podcast corresponds with a recently released blog post and video tutorial by our good friend, Jiling Lin. A licensed acupuncturist, herbalist, and yoga teacher, Jiling poetically walks us through the process of making our own botanical incense using a Traditional Chinese Medicine incense formulation, Xiao Yao San (逍遙散) or “Free and Easy Wanderer”. In Jiling’s words, “making our own incense provides a tactile connection with the land, medicine, and our bioregional terroir. Mixing and shaping incense by hand, we reconnect with our indigenous roots of shaping the earth, building rituals, and serenading our ancestors with songs carried on spiraling smoke”.

28 Aug 2020Meet Danu, a Beautiful Osprey at the Cascades Raptor Center00:21:33

Mountain Rose Herbs sponsors five rescued raptors at the Cascades Raptor Center in Eugene, Oregon. We spent a morning recently visiting with one of them: Danu, a stunning osprey. The osprey's diet of live fish and, particularly, its ability to dive into water to catch them, is unique among North American raptors. Danu was one of two hatchlings rescued in June of 2011. We had such a wonderful day visiting with this beautiful raptor.

16 Dec 2022Hawthorn & Bilberry Apple Cider Reduction Syrup | Featuring jim mcdonald00:17:24

Learn how to make a delicious and healthful apple cider reduction syrup using hawthorn and bilberry with jim mcdonald! This episode is the audio recording from a video jim filmed with us earlier this year. Listen in as jim gives us step-by-step instructions on how to make this wellness-supporting herbal treat as well as how to use it and tips for storage.

Watch jim making bilberry & hawthorn berry syrup on our YouTube channel.
Reference jim’s recipe on our blog.

In 1994, jim mcdonald's life changed when he drank tea from a wild plant he harvested from the land he lived upon.  Since those first sips of strange tea, his life in the woods and meadows of southeast michigan has been centered on the plants & ecosystems of that land, and how he might share their virtues to restore wellness with those around him.  jim's approach to herbcraft is deeply rooted in the land he lives upon, and blends traditional european folk influences with 19th century eclectic and physiomedical vitalism, which he conveys with story, experience, humour, common sense and lore to students, clients, random passersby and readers of his websites www.herbcraft.org & herbcraft.podia.com.  He's taught classes throughout north america and is currently (still) alternately writing “Foundational Herbcraft” and the “A Great Lakes Herbal”, in addition to articles for journals and other publications.  jimis a community herbalist, a manic wildcrafter and medicine maker, and has been an ardent student of the most learned teachers of herbcraft… the plants themselves.

09 Aug 2024Grants 4 Plants Follow-Up | Saticoy Food Hub & Rosalinda Sauro Sirianni Garden00:55:41

Hello plant people and welcome back to Herbal Radio! Over the next couple of weeks, we are thrilled to share two episodes featuring the four esteemed organizations that were the recipients of the 2023 Grants 4 Plants Program.

For those unfamiliar with Grants 4 Plants, Mountain Rose Herbs created the grant program back in 2018 to support nonprofits, small businesses, and home herbalists who are working towards making this planet a better place. Since its inception, we’ve proudly been able to fund many invaluable initiatives leading towards organic and sustainable agriculture, herbal education, protection of native and medicinal plants, and environmental stewardship.

This week, we are featuring two of the Regenerative Agriculture Fellows of Saticoy Food Hub, Kim Aguilar and Soli Guitierrez, and the Garden Coordinator of Rosalinda Sauro Sirianni Memorial Garden, Kate Robson.

We hope each of you listening in today will be inspired by the commendable work these organizations are providing for their communities and beyond. Please be sure to check out the links included below to find out how you can support these invaluable initiatives. We’ll see you next week when we hear from the other two organizations that won the 2023 Grants 4 Plants program. For now, we thank you for joining us on another botanical adventure!

Learn more about these organizations and the hard-working faces behind them:

Saticoy Food Hub is a non-profit organization located in Saticoy, California, which is an unincorporated area of Ventura County. There, they work to build food sovereignty with Saticoy residents and help sustain the organization's three major programs: Saticoy Community Fridge, Saticoy Certified Farmers Market, and Saticoy Sowers. Saticoy Sowers is food and medicine cultivation education that is meant to bring community members together to learn from each other about traditional and regenerative agricultural practices in culturally-relevant ways. The Saticoy Sowers program also provides access to the Food Hub’s newly established seed library, nursery, and gleaning tools, thanks in part to the generous support of Mountain Rose Herbs.

Kim Aguilar (they/them) is a community advocate with a background in Environmental Studies and Sociology, holding a B.A. from the University of California, Santa Barbara. They are dedicated to advancing the vision of food sovereignty in Saticoy through food access and self-sufficient food cultivation. In their time at Saticoy Food Hub, they helped develop Saticoy Sowers, a backyard growers program that integrates herbalism and holistic medicine aimed at fostering sustainable practices and community health.

Soli Gutierrez (she/her) is a community educator and organizer focused on food sovereignty, traditional regenerative agriculture, and Spanish language access. Born and raised in Ventura County. In 2019, she co-founded the Pesticide-Free Soil Project, which collaborated with schools on compost tea parties and hosted local environmental experts. Since 2021, she has been working in bilingual education, relearning traditional food cultivation methods, and restoring native plant habitats.

If you are a champion for social justice and healthy food systems, you can support their mission by donating HERE.

Kate Robson (she/her) grew up on a rural farm in Indiana County, PA, where her parents and grandparents took pride in the food they grew. Some of Kate's earliest memories with her family included shucking corn, snapping beans, and squeegeeing tomatoes. After a decade in science and agriculture education, Kate received her Master’s Degree in Environmental Science from Point Park University. Her thesis focused on the health, environmental, and community impacts of community gardens in urban areas, and her goal was to get involved with urban agriculture in Pittsburgh, PA. Kate took a position at North Hills Community Outreach, where she focuses on helping community members facing crisis, hardship, and poverty in northern Allegheny County. KEYNOTE DESCRIPTION

Althea will talk about the vital role that we all can play in bringing knowledge of plants back into the mainstream. From the basic home skills that our grandmothers and grandfathers possessed, to the clinical practitioner, we all have pieces to bring to the table. As cooks, gardeners, medicine makers, educators and healers, our spiritual connections to the plants can enrich the lives of everyone around us; and as health care becomes more expensive and less founded in the day to day skills that enhance and create wellness, Herbalism can reconnect and empower us. She will talk about the many ways we can all become "herbal messengers,” bringing back health care to the home, office and institutions that make up our world.

21 Apr 2023The Enchanter’s Green: Vervain, Wood Betony, and St. John’s Wort | Featuring Kiva Rose Hardin00:48:42

This podcast episode is the presentation that Kiva Rose Hardin gave for the Fall 2022 Free Herbalism Project. This was a virtual event that took place over Zoom on October 14, 2022.

Kiva states, Vervain, Wood Betony, and St. John’s Wort were some of my earliest herbal allies when I took my first steps on the plant healer’s path. These three herbs are nervines, but so much more! They have a long history as sacred and magical plants across many cultures. Medicinally, all three are often categorized as calming but also have profound tonifying effects and myriad healing actions that are not always as well-known as they should be. In the class, I will cover my personal experiences with the herbs, including specific indications, application, medicine making, dosage, folklore, and more!

11 Dec 2018Botanicals and GI Health: A Holistic Approach with Dr. Tieraona Low Dog01:28:34

A healthy digestive system is absolutely crucial for overall health. From the growing rate of C-sections, to the widespread use of proton pump inhibitors, NSAIDs and antibiotics, to the persistent state of stress many people are living with, there can be little wonder that the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, our foundation, is under siege. This session will explore the powerful role botanicals play in promoting GI health through the appropriate use of bitters, demulcents, nervines, and much more.

Tieraona Low Dog, MD’s exploration of the natural world began more than 35 years ago as she studied midwifery, herbalism, massage therapy, and martial arts before earning her medical degree from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. An internationally recognized expert in the fields of integrative medicine, dietary supplements, and women’s health, Dr. Low Dog was appointed by President Bill Clinton to the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy, served as the elected Chair of the US Pharmacopeia Dietary Supplements and Botanicals Expert Information Panel, and was appointed to the Scientific Advisory Council for the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

She has been an invited speaker to more than 550 scientific/medical conferences, published 40 peer-reviewed articles, written 22 chapters for medical textbooks, and has authored five books, including three National Geographic books, Fortify Your Life, Healthy at Home, and Life is Your Best Medicine. She has appeared on CNN, ABC’s 20/20, and is a frequent guest on the Dr. Oz show and NPR’s The People’s Pharmacy.

This audio was recorded at the Free Herbalism Project hosted by Mountain Rose Herbs on October 14, 2018 in Eugene, OR.

18 Aug 2023Plantain the Future | Featuring jim mcdonald (Rerelease)00:59:27

This week’s episode was recorded at the in-person Summer 2022 Free Herbalism Project at Mt. Pisgah Arboretum in Eugene, Oregon. Emcee, Jiling Lin, introduces keynote speaker jim mcdonald – who presents on the many virtues of plantain. It's commonly said in herbalism that "It's far better to know a dozen uses for one herb than one use for a dozen herbs", yet, many people still think of herbs in a "take this for that" sense. To remedy this, jim mcdonald will offer in depth information on the far reaching potential of the common and infinitely sustainable weed plantain, exploring its deep and vital usage for issues throughout the body. From mosquito bites to leaky gut syndrome, this is a plant that can be a foundational part of one's path to wellness.

Learn more about the Free Herbalism Project by clicking here.

20 Oct 2023Interviews on Herbal Radio | Featuring Margi Flint00:53:45

On this week’s episode of Herbal Radio, we had the honor of interviewing one of the greatest living herbalists and world-blended practitioners, Margi Flint. With Margi’s 40+ years of experience in herbal medicine, she shares her wisdom on honoring the life force within plants, rather than taking advantage of what plants can offer us. Margi dives into her beginnings as a wild-spirited girl who frequented the forest in her hometown backyard of Weston, MA, and how lightning strikes seem to be a uniquely common theme in her life!

After an early-age diagnosis where she was told her life expectancy would continue for a mere year and half, Margi began exploring dance, energy work, and prioritizing her health. This exploration brought her to the front steps of the herbal community, where she found her purpose within bridging the gap between herbal and western medicine.

Margi Flint RH, B. Sc. is a professional member of the American Herbalists Guild ~ Herbal Mentor, is on staff at Pacific Rim College in British Columbia, was an Adjunct Professor at Tufts University School of Medicine 1994-1970, North Shore Community College 2003 -2008 and continues to lecture at Bastyr University and Mass College of Pharmacy for their undergraduate programs. She lectures at herbal symposiums as well as medical institutions around the States and internationally.

Margi will be teaching a class hosted by the Four Seasons Herbal Guild on Reading the Body in Spokane, WA on October 28th-29th. Please visit the Four Seasons Herbal Guild website to discover more details on this class.

Kristy shares with us her profound knowledge of the ancient history of seaweeds, responsible seaweed harvesting practices, utilizing seaweeds as plant medicine, and even her recipe for kelp pickles!

As always, we truly hope you enjoy today’s Herbal Radio episode, thank you for tagging along with us for this marine botanical adventure!

Kristy Bredin began her journey as an herbalist in 2009, when she began a two-year apprenticeship with herbalist Robin Rose Bennett in New York. Over the years she has studied clinical herbalism with Chanchal Cabrera, Paul Bergner, Matthew Wood, and Margi Flint. For the last decade, she has worked with Ryan Drum, wildcrafting medicinal herbs and cultivating an in-depth knowledge of traditional Western herbalism and local plants and seaweeds. Since 2013 she has been sharing plant remedies of the Pacific Northwest through Mermaid Botanicals. Mermaid Botanicals now encompasses Ryan Drum’s Island Herbs since he retired from wildcrafting in 2019.

Kristy is passionate about exploring the natural world and working with wild plants in ancient and creative ways. She supports folks in re-engaging and integrating with their natural environment through wild plant medicine work. She currently offers classes locally and internationally on seaweeds, wild plants, and healing with herbs and is working on a book about seaweeds for health and healing: Marine Herbalism, to be published in 2029.

Important – If you are interested in harvesting your own seaweeds, be sure to check the fish and wildlife regulations, limits, and permitting for recreational harvesting within your local area. Regulations and permits will vary from state to state, and there may be additional regulations or restrictions regarding beach access or harvesting on beaches that are part of State and National Parks.

26 Jul 2024Organic Food is Integrity | Featuring Melody Morrell01:04:25

This week on Everything You Didn’t Know About Herbalism, we are sharing a fundamental conversation surrounding the passionate mission of the watchdogs within the organic industry – The Cornucopia Institute. Thomas had the pleasure of sitting down with our dear friend and Director of The Cornucopia Institute, Melody Morrell. Listen in as Melody and Thomas take a deep dive into the impact the pesticide industry has on our food, and how integrity and honesty is the driving force behind the organic industry.

As always, we thank you for joining us on a new type of botanical adventure and are so honored to have you tag along with us on this ride. Remember, we want to hear from you! Your questions, ideas, and who you want to hear from will be an invaluable piece to this new series. So please, email us at podcast@mountainroseherbs.com or give us a call at 800-879-3337 to let us know what solutions you’d like us to uncover next within the vast world of herbalism.

Melody Morrell has been with The Cornucopia Institute since 2012. With 25 years of nonprofit experience spanning issues of food, agriculture, media, gender, developmental disability, and simple living, she brings enormous passion, persistence, and practicality to her endeavors.

Growing up, Melody saw the fallout from the 1980s farm crisis in her Minnesota hometown. Industrialization changed the landscape, leaving naked soil and overcrowded animals in its wake.

She is a fierce champion for the environmental, economic, and human health benefits of organic food and farming. Melody earned her BA in anthropology from the University of Minnesota-Duluth. She and her husband Andy live in a very small house in rural Minnesota with their English Lab, Beau. The land flourishes with hundreds of species of medicinal herbs and diverse wildlife.

15 Dec 2023Interviews on Herbal Radio with Thomas Dick | Featuring jim mcdonald01:01:37

Welcome back to Herbal Radio plant-enthusiasts, thank you for joining us for this week’s episode. We had the pleasure of sitting down with our long-time friend and proprietor of Herbcraft, jim mcdonald. Last time jim was our featured guest on Herbal Radio, we shared his enthralling presentation from the Summer 2022 Free Herbalism Project on the virtues of plantain – an infinitely sustainable and resilient plant that often carries the unfortunate reputation of being a pesky weed. Today, jim dives deeper into what constitutes a “weed”, and what allows a botanical to cross over the threshold of what we consider carrying medicinal value. Without giving too much of Thomas and jim’s conversation away, here is a quote from jim to start us off with an introspective thought, “Just because you can’t do everything, doesn’t mean you can’t do anything”. We truly hope you enjoy today’s episode of Herbal Radio, we’re so happy to have you here with us on this botanical ride.

jim mcdonald is an herbalist, manic wildcrafter, and medicine maker in Southeast Michigan (that cool state that looks like a mitten you can see from space) where he teaches, sees clients, wildharvests, and concocts herbal formulas. In 1994, jim's life changed when he drank tea from a wild plant he harvested from the land he lived upon. Since those first sips of strange tea, his life in the woods and meadows of Southeast Michigan has centered itself on the plants & ecosystems of that land, and how he might share their virtues to restore wellness with those around him. His approach to herbalism is a blend of traditional folk and Indigenous influences mixed up with a bit of 19th century eclectic and physiomedical vitalism. He weaves his sense of humor and discretionary irreverence to his approach so as not to appear too serious about life! Jim hosts the websites www.herbcraft.org & herbcraft.podia.com, which list his offerings and conveys his thoughts on plants and herbalism (and if you’ve ever wondered, the lack of capitalization is an homage to e.e. cummings).

28 Jul 2023Plant Stories | Featuring Lucretia VanDyke00:57:48

We are so pleased to feature another interview with our friend Lucretia VanDyke. On Herbal Radio, we have learned about Lucretia’s upbringing and what led her to work with plants, but we have never gotten to learn what plants she loves and why. In this Plant Stories episode, Lucretia talks about her favorite edible plants of New Orleans and the significance they played in her upbringing that began her herbalism journey.

With a journey that began when she was a little girl mixing herbs, mud, and roots on her grandparents’ farm, Lucretia VanDyke has had a lifelong connection to the plants. She has been in the wellness industry for over twenty-five years. Her quest for knowledge and storytelling has led her all over the world to learn about remedies, traditions, and ceremonies from indigenous healers.

One of the foremost experts on Southern folk healing arts, Lucretia integrates rituals, plant spirit meditation, holistic food/herbal medicine, and ancestor reverence into people’s practices.

Lucretia has worked and trained with many internationally known spa and skin care companies. She is a holistic educator, speaker, herbalist, sacred sexologist, ceremonialist, spiritual coach, intuitive energy practitioner, diviner, author, and world traveler. Lucretia brings her vivacious spirit and her message of ancestral connection in herbal practices to inspire others to embrace their unique relationship with the plants. Teaching herbal classes, cooking, storytelling, and foraging in the woods learning native medicine charges her soul.

The Buy Nothing Movement has been growing since 1992 as overconsumption continues to consume our precious natural resources faster than we can replace them, putting our planet in real jeopardy.

If you visit our website today, you will see that our entire website is blacked out in protest of Black Friday. Instead, we hope you will spend the day with your family and friends, sharing acts of kindness, discovering new zero-waste lifestyle tips from the Going Zero Waste Blog, listening to your favorite podcast (bonus points if it’s this one!), or better yet, all of the above! This is a day to reach for meaning in our lives instead of stuff, and we thank you all for being part of the solution to reestablish a symbiotic relationship with the planet we call home. So please, do not shop with us today Friday, November 29th, 2024.

14 Oct 2022Interviews on Herbal Radio | Featuring Lucretia VanDyke01:06:33

Herbal Radio is pleased to release this week’s episode with our good friend, Lucretia VanDyke. This conversation was especially exciting as Lucretia’s first book, African American Herbalism: A Practical Guide to Healing Plants and Folk Traditions, just came out on October 4th! It was amazing to speak with Lucretia about her history, her brand-new book, and learning how to use plants to help us heal from past emotional luggage. Stayed tuned for a special book giveaway the beginning of 2023!

15 Sep 2023Plant Stories | Featuring Doug Elliot (Rerelease)00:26:07

There may be no better person that embodies the vision of “Plant Stories” like herbal troubadour and Appalachian naturalist, Doug Elliot. A gifted storyteller, Doug recites both wisdom and whimsical through spoken word and song. We’ve compiled some of our favorite songs that Doug has recorded with us and are releasing them together, in this delightful and heart-warming episode. Our host, Thomas, gives a brief introduction in between Doug’s sets, offering context for each of the four botanical tales & tunes.

Today’s episode also comes with a special visual bonus! We had the pleasure of visiting with Doug in the summer of 2022 at his Appalachian homestead. Click here to see some of the photos of Doug in his element

Doug Elliot is a naturalist, herbalist, storyteller, basket maker, back-country guide, philosopher, and harmonica wizard. For many years made his living as a traveling herbalist, gathering and selling herbs, teas, and remedies.

He has spent a great deal of time with traditional country folk and indigenous people, learning their stories, folklore and traditional ways of relating to the natural world. In recent years he has performed and presented programs at festivals, museums, botanical gardens, nature centers and schools from Canada to the Caribbean. He has been a featured storyteller at the National Storytelling Festival. He has lectured and performed at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto and conducted workshops for the Smithsonian Institution. He has led ranger training sessions for the National Park Service and guided people on wilderness experiences from down-east Maine to the Florida Everglades. He was named harmonica champion at Fiddler’s Grove Festival in Union Grove, N.C. He is the author of five books, many articles in regional and national magazines, has recorded a number of award winning albums of stories and songs, and is occasionally seen on PBS-TV, and the History and National Geographic Channels.

In recent years, he has received a variety of honors. The National Storytelling Network (the largest storytelling membership organization in the world) inducted him into their Circle of Excellence for “exceptional commitment and exemplary contribution to the art of storytelling.” The International Herb Association presented him with the Otto Richter Award honoring his work with herbs and useful wild plants. The National Association for Interpretation (the professional organization of park rangers, naturalists, museum curators, etc.) gave him the Master Front Line Interpreter Award for his “mastery of interpretive techniques, program development, and design of creative projects” celebrating the natural world and our human connection to nature.

Elliot’s passion for the natural world developed in early childhood roaming the woods and waters around his home. His dad used to say, “That boy knows what’s under every rock between here and town.” He still roams the woods today. He has traveled from the Canadian North to the Central American jungles studying plant and animal life and seeking out the traditional wisdom of people with intimate connections to the natural world. And he still looks under rocks. These days he uncovers more than just a few strange critters; he brings to light the human connection to this vibrant world of which we are a part.

02 Mar 2021Listening to the Land on Climate Change00:06:47

Much of what is happening around us regarding climate change is essentially invisible because the effects take time to build up and it’s hard to draw conclusions about one particular event. But the land and plants are beginning to show us the effects of climate events over time. Our friends at Mount Pisgah Arboretum have been challenged by climate change impacts on native Douglas fir trees throughout the park. Learn more about how they are listening to the land to understand the impact of climate change.

08 Nov 2024The Double-Edged Sword of Plant Identification Apps | Featuring Shana Lipner Grover00:58:15

This week on Everything You Didn’t Know About Herbalism, we are joined by our long-time dear friend that will likely be no stranger to many of our listeners—Shana Lipner Grover! As a highly acclaimed clinical herbalist and educator, Shana joins us for a conversation on the upsides and downsides of plant identification apps, and the advantages of leaning on regional herbalists to gain knowledge on the flora, fauna, and funga surrounding us. Listen in as Shana shares an entertaining yet cautionary tale on the potential dangers of using plant identification apps, and why these apps should always be the beginning of your botanical research, not the end.

If you are interested in plant identification apps or actively use them, here are a few of Shana’s tips:

🌱 Shana’s plant identification app recommendation: iNaturalist

🔎 Be aware and follow all wildharvesting regulations and laws in your local area.

16 Sep 2022Interviews on Herbal Radio | Featuring Shawn Donnille00:56:16

Thomas sits down with Mountain Rose Herbs’ CEO and Owner, Shawn Donnille, to discuss his background, the history of the company, the importance of activism, and what Shawn sees as the future of Mountain Rose Herbs.

Shawn Donnille first became involved with Mountain Rose Herbs as a passionate young idealist with a fervent desire to change the world. He was the town’s notorious rabble rouser, always petitioning for mandatory labeling on genetically modified food crops, encouraging people to support a strong conservation ethic, fighting for the protection of endangered or threatened species, and the protection and enhancement of our riparian areas. When Mountain Rose Herbs came into his life, Shawn saw it as an opportunity to change the way business is conducted on this planet. To this day, the revolutionary business principles that Shawn initiated have been used as a successful model by countless other organizations around the world.

Shawn became co-owner of the company in 2001 and since then he has initiated several bold and daring changes, most notably the eradication of all conventionally grown products from our product line, introducing the first line of fair trade certified medicinal herbs in the United States, implementing the design and deployment of our web presence, launching our zero waste program, our charitable giving program, and so much more!

As CEO Shawn currently oversees every aspect of Mountain Rose Herbs along with all of the directors and managers at the company to be sure they are leading the business in a direction we can all be proud of. In addition to this he is intimately connected with developing all of our sustainability initiatives to further enhance and propel bold ideas that are being shared with numerous other corporations, non-profits, state agencies, and civic groups as a working model for success.

In his spare time, Shawn can be found deep within Oregon’s wilderness system, or lost in the pages of any book about ecology and the environment. He currently retains one of the nation’s largest collections of rare and antiquarian books that deal exclusively with nature writing and outdoor literature. With Thoreau, Abbey, and Muir being his favorites, of course!

"All of our environmental issues can be connected to the embarrassing way that business abuses this planet. My objective is to stop this destructive pattern by offering an alternative modality and sharing that modality with others so we can all lead the change necessary to heal the planet"
